RE-IMAGING A FLEXIBLE

BAZAAR' 集 'NETWORK IN ZIBO CITY XIAOMENG LIU 899067

DESIGN STATEMENT As an old industrial city, Zibo faces a rapidly declining economy, and urban entertainment and social construction have stagnated, making the city lack vitality. In 2020, COVID-19 plunged the entire city into a more depressing situation. The lack of new investment and sufficient career opportunities in Zibo city makes young people choose to live in larger cities, making the city lack vitality. In 2021, people in the city have gradually come out of the shadow of the epidemic, but they are more eager for a vibrant and interactive space to change their unchanging boring life. However, the enthusiasm of the traditional bazaars held in the countryside does not seem to be affected. Farmers are still conducting lively transactions, entertainment, and socializing at bazaars. This traditional rural activity promotes the development of local commodity trading and promotes the spread of local culture. This project utilizes the attributes and advantages of traditional bazaars to inject the vitality into the urban context. This project digs deep into local folk art forms to promote their occurrence. The thesis argues that various public spaces in cities, such as abandoned sites, sidewalks, and parking lots, can accommodate the bazaar. This flexible network of urban bazaars links the city through culture, make people's lives more convenient and vibrant. The bazaar becomes medicums where stories and exchanges take place that create memories exclusive to this city.

POST-INDUSTRIAL SHRINKING CITY Zibo is a resource-based city and an old industrial base in the country. It is one of the earliest areas of modern China's industrial and mining development. It has a history of modern industrial action for more than a hundred years. However, in recent years, many factories have been forced to close down due to the severe air pollution problem. As a result, many workers lost their jobs, and people had to leave the city searching for a new jobs. From 2018, the economy of Zibo City decreased a lot, which has seriously affected the speed of urban construction.

BACKGROUND

A large number of investors are pulling their money out of this highly unattractive city.

3

The main places of entertainment in Zibo are a few old shopping malls, cinemas and parks.

4

CHALLENGE OR OPPORTUNITIES EPIDEMIC In 2020, the COVID-19 outbreak made the city's economic situation even worse. After two months of semi-lockdown management, many restaurants and small supermarkets in the city could not continue to operate. Moreover, the emergence of the epidemic has made residents more eager for a lively and stable lifestyle.

STREET STALL ECONOMY Simultaneously, to promote economic recovery, the government has introduced the “street stall economy”.Zibo urban area suddenly appeared a lot of night street market point. The city suddenly became lively and even more vibrant than the day before the outbreak.

GOVERNMENTAL SUPPORT “The street-stall and small-store economy is an important source of employment and human culinary culture — it’s part of China's livelihood just as much as larger, high-end businesses,”Li told small business owners during a Monday inspection of the eastern city of Yantai, according to state media. “The country will only get better once markets, enterprises and individual traders get back on their feet and develop. We will give you our support.” The government no longer lists road occupations, road markets, and mobile vendors as civilized city evaluation and assessment content. Vendors are allowed to temporarily occupy roads for business operations, but they shall not occupy blind streets and fire passages and shall not harm the interests of others. The existing shops can extend their business to the roadside without being restricted by indoor space. Regions can delimit the range of stalls, formulate standards, and integrate the vendors for unified and centralized management based on the actual local conditions.

STREET STALL ECONOMY IN ZIBO This policy provides opportunities for the informal economy in cities. An informal questionnaire about Zibo people's views on the street stall economy shows that most of them think that the street stall reminds them of the experience of Ganji‘ 赶集 ’in rural area. The street stall is an alternative to the bazaar in the urban context.

WHAT IS BAZAAR A bazaar is a rural activity where many vendors gather in a specific place, such as the street or square, to sell various goods, including food, daily necessities, clothes, etc. However, with the development of the rural economy, the bazaar has produced many cultural functions. There will be different recreational activities, such as a dress-up parade and opera performance. In a sense, the bazaar is the social center of the countryside.

IMPORTANCE OF BAZAARS IN CHINA VIBRANT

The bazaar is the most critical large-scale commercial activity in a rural area. Local people can not only get the living materials but also promote local cultural exchanges.

The vendors' shouts and the sounds of various folk art performances interweave together, making the venue full of vitality. A large number of people gathered here makes the most emotional moment of the space.

GOODS Local people can buy various production and living materials in the market, meeting their daily needs. Farmers get the freshest vegetables and fruits from their farmlands and sell them in the bazaar directly, promoting the sales speed of agricultural products and reducing the sales cost.

FEELINGS Going to a bazaar is not only a need for shopping but also a sense of ceremony. There are many stories behind these small deals.

CULTURE The bazaar can show the unique customs and cultural characteristics of the village. People can feel the most rustic regional elements here. The process of people going to different villages and towns to participate in the bazaar effectively promotes the transmission of culture.

PROJECT NARRATIVE This project utilizes the attributes and advantages of traditional bazaars to inject the vitality into the urban context.

COMMUNICATION Due to traffic conditions and poverty, farmers' knowledge is relatively poor. The bazaar is a channel for rural people to exchange information, technology, and knowledge. Friends who have no time to visit at ordinary times get together through bazaars to exchange their daily lives and emotions.

POSSIBLE SITE FOR MODERN BAZAAR

SITE ANALYSES The site is located in a crucial residential area in the city and is also a critical living circle and night economy model district planned by the government. In addition, there are community service centers, business districts, schools, parks, and a complete public transportation system surround the site. Before 2014, this area used to be a combination of urban and rural areas, and the site used to be a bazaar area. Therefore, the current local demographic structure is vibrant, including urban residents and farmers relocated due to rural reconstruction, and they have the tradition of going to the bazaar. There often hold large-scale commercial events such as food festivals and promotional activities. Therefore, it can attract a large number of nearby and farther residents to gather. This site is an excellent place to promote cultural exchange and integration.

However, due to the rapid construction of commercial areas, the commercial space in this area is saturated. The site was initially planned as a large shopping mall, but the project has been canceled. The site turned into a weedy abandoned site. However, the surrounding population resources and commercial resources should not be ignored, and this site should be reactivated in the future.

CHATUCHAK WEEKEND MARKET, BANGKOK,THAILAND MARKET Bangkok is a fascinating city with many worldfamous markets. In the market, you can experience authentic Thai life. The stalls are part of the city's unique culture. The Chatuchak Weekend Market is the largest in Bangkok, also known as JJ Market. Chatuchak Market sells many different kinds of goods, including plants, antiques, consumer electronics, pets, fresh and dry food and drinks, furniture and home accessories, clothing, etc. There are occasional small mobile performances in the market. Why does the Thai stall culture develop so well? Street stalls are a vital part of supporting Thailand's tourism industry. It not only solves the employment problem of many people but also promotes local economic development. Their night markets are an essential part of highlighting Thai culture. The government supports the development of local stalls. To regulate the roadside stalls and create a clean and tidy environment, Bangkok has designated a particular free area for vendors to set up stalls.

DESIGN EXPLORATION

Thailand's stalls generally have the following characteristics: most of the goods marked prices, and the price is more affordable. The cost of the same product is the same everywhere. The competitive environment is very harmonious. The stall owners rarely produce conflict and contradiction. Stall owners will clean up their stalls after setting up their stalls.

STRATEGY ONE:CULTURE-ORIENTED SPACE As a vital folk cultural activity, the bazaar also carries the functions of promoting economy, communication, and recreation. The design emphasizes the use of the attractiveness and cohesion of the bazaar, combined with the local lifestyle and artistic characteristics of Zibo, to strengthen the local people's understanding and interest in traditional culture. This design can meet different types of sales activities to promote the trading of agricultural products. Farmers usually place goods on tricycles or the ground, and some vendors have their food carts or small trucks. They usually need an open and flat field and shelter. The canopy and the gathering spaces provide areas where people can stay at any time, which provides opportunities for residents to talk and provide places for cultural exchanges. The project excavated different folk art activities and implanted stage, steel frame structure, and other elements, add more leisure and entertainment facilities to extend people's stay time. This method is conducive to let people unconsciously actively participate in the creation of a lively outdoor place.

STRATEGY TWO:FLEXIBLE AND MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPACE As the population grows and the demand for community activities continues to increase, single-function outdoor spaces can no longer meet the rhythm of urban lifestyle. This project will add new products, add new ideas, and provide new economic opportunities based on maintaining the rules of some traditional bazaars.

Square stall

Festival celebration

According to the current urban lifestyle, the bazaar will set up stall areas and food stations to meet different people's purchasing needs(extraordinary day). Besides, bazaar activities such as Candy Festival and Dress-up Parade will be held here. These activities help to improve people's awareness of cultural exchanges and establish positive social relationships.

After the bazaar(ordinary day), the site will restore to the city's functional spaces, parking lots, road, and parks. This method can improve the city's infrastructure construction.

STRATEGY THREE:ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY SPACE This project proposes an environment-friendly design solution, taking people and landscape into consideration. The project will transform the original site condition, improve the site's infrastructure, and create a comfortable environment. Since Zibo is an industrial city, its air pollution situation is complicated. The design starts from ecological sustainability, fully considers the ecological value, and creates a healthy outdoor space through diversified planting patterns ,bioswales and ecological pavement parking lots, which is very important to improve the urban ecological environment.

STRATEGY FOUR:BOUNDARYLESS SPACE In the coming years, the number of participants in the project, the types of activities, and the scale of the venue will gradually change. In the early stage, due to insufficient crowd participation, the scale of the functional area was small, and the types of activities were also limited. As time goes by, more people will participate, the scale of functional areas will gradually expand, and the types of activities will become more abundant, making it an ever-growing outdoor space. The community gardens around the site, urban sidewalks, squares in critical commercial centers, and public green spaces all have the potential to become part of the project.

STAGE ONE:CENTRAL PARK

STAGE TWO:ROAD SYSTEM&PARKLETS

The ongoing process will make the project more mature and complete, thereby providing support for new activities and events, making it a long-term, meaningful cultural project.

STAGE THREE:SMALL SQUARE

Umbrellas are the most common shelter in traditional bazaars, and they are an important symbol of bazaars. This umbrella-shaped structure evolved from the ancient Chinese character "qi."It combines with bioswales, and rainwater will flow down the structure to the greenspace.

Zibo is one of the hometowns of traditional Chinese lanterns, and early lanterns were made of silk. The production of silk inspires this lantern structure. It is not only a canopy but also a shelf for hanging lanterns.

FUTURE SCENARIO By 2050, the project is expected to occur in other places in the city, and it will develop into a cultural event for the entire city. From a single site scale, each site has its functional positioning. It will serve the residents around the site and meet their daily needs. From the perspective of the entire bazaar network, the entire network will adopt a mobile model, and bazaars will be held in different seasons and festivals in various locations. Cultural performances will move around the whole city.During exploring the bazaar, people will promote the economic development and cultural dissemination of the entire city. It is necessary to improve the urban public transportation system from the urban scale and improve its accessibility. This measure can encourage farmers outside the city, businesses, and neighboring residents to gather and socialize in a city context.
