Let’s Read: Kim’s Classroom
Hi!
My name is Kim, and I am 10 years old. I live in the United States in a city called Boston. I am in 4th grade. I want to tell you about my classroom.
It is a colorful room with desks and chairs for every student. There is an American flag and a whiteboard at the front of the room. There are posters on the walls with numbers, letters and animals.
My teacher, Ms. Brady, has a desk at the front of the room. She always tells us how important it is to keep the room tidy, so I organize everything carefully in my desk. Some of my friends are a little messy, so I help them to tidy their desks sometimes.
At the end of every summer, I go to the store for new school supplies like pencils, erasers, and a pencil sharpener. I like to use colourful pens, but Ms. Brady says I have to use pencils so I can erase mistakes. My favorite thing to buy for school is a organize my work in. I always choose one with cute

Let’s Read: Kim’s Classroom
Texten är något längre och är också tänkt som en modelltext när eleven själv ska skriva om sitt klassrum i kapitlets Write uppgift.
CULTURAL POINT
Read the text together so that you can discuss some cultural points of interest that are indicated by the text. For example:
• In most schools, American children say the “Pledge of Allegiance” at the beginning of every school day. They stand up, put their hand over their heart, and recite the pledge together. Children have this memorized from an early age. This is the Pledge of Allegiance: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” Discuss what a “pledge” (a promise) is and what “allegiance” means (loyalty).
• In the United States, school supplies are not provided to students. Instead, their parents have to buy their supplies. Most schools send out lists during the summer with what to buy. This includes everything from notebooks and pencils, to items like facial tissues and calculators.
TAKE TURNS
Let’s Talk: Kim’s Classroom
Det här är en kooperativ övning där eleverna letar upp svaren tillsammans i texten och skriver sedan ner det i sin bok. Observera att i texten finns några ord medvetet stavade på amerikansk engelska och brittisk engelska. Det är en del av en kommande Easter Egg uppgift.
Students work with a partner to find the answer to each question in the text. They should take turns answering the questions. The first student will find the answer to the first question with help and encouragement from their partner, and then it is the second student’s turn. You will likely need to model this method for the students, including how they support and encourage a partner.
Worldwide English
Om ni vill kan ni samla bokens exempel på Worldwide English någonstans i klassrummet. Kanske upptäcker ni också ytterligare fler ord än de som boken tar upp under terminens gång.
Grammar Grabber
Grammar Grabber: Verbs – Am, Is and Are
Till er hjälp finns grammatikförklaringen i boken och en förberedd genomgång.
Grammar Work: Circle the Words
I den här övningen ska eleven ringa in am, is, are i texten på sidan 14.
Vill ni lösa eller rätta övningen tillsammans finns den sist i den förberedda genomgången om Am, Is and Are och i facitfilen.
Grammar Work: Am, Is or Are?
Eleverna fortsätter att öva på am, is, are i den här övningen. Vill ni träna ännu mer så finns ett koperingsunderlag med fler övningar.
Grammar Work: There is or There are?
I texten om Kims klassrum fick eleverna bekanta sig med meningar där There is och There are används och det förklaras också i Grammar Grabber
I den här övningen prövas elevernas kunskaper.
TWO SOLVE A PROBLEM
Let’s Play: School Words
Till den här övningen hör ett kopieringsunderlag, med kort som skrivs ut och klipps isär, samt ett facit.
In this task, students work together to translate words related to the classroom from Swedish to English, and English to Swedish.
DIRECTIONS:
1. Put each student with a partner. Hand out a pile of cards to each pair.
2. Each student draws a card and starts to solve the task on their own. Each card has one word and one short sentence for them to translate.
3. After one minute, or when both students are done, the pair compare their answers on the two cards and discuss any differences they might have had. Is their answer correct?
5. Students continue with new cards until the cards are done or until you end the activity.
Some cards are easier than others. Some ask them to translate from English to Swedish, while others ask them to translate from Swedish to English. You may wish to do all, or only some of the cards. Choose cards at the right level for the students in your class.
TIP: If this is the first time your students are doing this kind of activity, hand them only one card each at a time to keep them from moving on without each other. You can give them two new cards for each round you decide to do.
ASK AND ANSWER
Let’s Talk: Introduce Yourself
Den här övningen är en variant av den kooperativa strukturen Fråga, fråga, byt.
1. Practice the script together as many times as necessary.
2. Get the students moving around the room for this activity! They take their books with them and interview four other students in English using the script. They write the answers they get from the other students in their book.
3. Go around the room to each student, choose volunteers, or choose specific students to share with the class. Each student introduces one of the people they interviewed. Challenge them to introduce someone who hasn’t been introduced yet.
Let’s Talk: Introduce a Classmate
Utifrån anteckningarna på sidan 19 ska nu eleverna presentera varandra.
Challenge Yourself!
EASTER EGG HUNT CHALLENGE
This activity is an optional challenge for those students that finish early. They should find words spelled in two different ways in the chapter.

TEAM ENGL i SH
Activity Book
