2019-20 VISION BOARD
Vision boards are an amazing tool to help you identify, visualize and achieve any goals you have for yourself. Visualization is one of the most powerful mind exercises you can do! It’s also not just fun, it’s science! People with written out visions and goals are 50% more likely to accomplish them than those that keep them in their head. Tape or glue anything that inspires you over this text to create your vision board and start making 2019-20 your best year ever. Here are some of our best tips for success! • There aren’t any rules! Your board can be focused in one specific category, or cover multiple goals for the year. • Need help getting started? Think about potential goals in the following categories: personal growth, relationships, health and fitness, family & home, work/school, finances, fun and adventure. • Focus not just on things you want, but how you want to feel. It’s OK to include something that just makes you feel happy vs. having a specific ‘purpose’ (ex. include a picture from a past vacation even if you don’t plan on taking a similar trip this year, just because it makes you feel happy and calm!) • Check back to your vision board page often! The more you see it, the more it will affect you. • Share it with friends! Sharing your goals takes your likeliness of accomplishing them from 50% to 90%! This gives you accountability partners AND cheerleaders along your path to success.

HOT CHOCOLATE OR HOT TEA These are a great alternative if someone is not a coffee lover. Add in a bag of marshmallows or a honey bear for a sweet treat! SINGLE SERVE COFFEE MAKER All students love a good caffeine fix. If you can find one that makes coffee into a travel mug, even better!
A COZY BLANKET A cozy throw blanket is great for those colder days and nights. Great for studying, watching TV or just hanging out with friends and chatting (perhaps over a cup of cocoa or hot tea?). ALL IN ONE PLANNER The Ultimate Notebook by bloom daily planners is great for planning, to-do lists, note taking, doodling and coloring pages...All in one place! www.bloomplanners.com HOMEMADE GOODIES! Let’s face it, who doesn’t love homemade treats from home! If you can’t send something home made, consider sending some treats from home they can’t get at school.
HAR19 Business Guide pgs 1-40 V1.indd 7
GIFT CARDS These are always a great idea and will get plenty of use! Send one for a local grocery store or restaurant. Eating at the dining hall can get boring. This alternative will be a great pick me up!
DON’T FORGET THE HOLIDAYS Consider sending a holiday themed care package! Sending Halloween candy, decorations, Christmas cookies or Hanukkah treats are always a big hit. WELLNESS PACKAGE No one likes being sick when they are far from home. Sending some tissues, chicken soup, cough drops/meds or hot teas are always great to have on hand. LETTERS Send a handwritten letter or note with your package. Nothing makes it more personal than a heartfelt letter or note from a loved one to cheer them up!

E C N A N E T N I A M CAR • Be Easy On Your Engine. The most wear to your car happens in the first 10-20 minutes of operation. Avoid accelerating quickly, especially in extremely hot, cold or humid weather. Try to consolidate multiple errands into one trip. • Avoid Heavy Keychains. Heavy keychains that bounce around while you drive wear out the tumblers inside your ignition and can lead to ignition switch failure. Use a lightweight key chain or a detachable keychain that you can remove while driving. • Don’t Top Off! Topping off your tank is bad for your car, the environment, and your wallet. Gasoline needs extra space to expand. If you overfill, the extra gas can spill out or evaporate into your car or out onto the ground, damaging the ozone. Stop pumping as soon as the automatic nozzle clicks off. • Tighten You Gas Cap. According to Car Care Council, 147 million gallons of gas evaporate from loose or broken gas caps each year! Tighten up your gas cap every time you fill up to make your gas last longer. • Tire Lifespan Down 15%! Underinflated tires can bring your gas mileage and tire lifespan down up to 15%! Check your owner’s manual to find the ideal tire pressure for your vehicle and stick to that number. • Get Regular Tune Ups. Fixing an out of tune engine can boost gas mileage up to 4%! Getting regular check ups can also find other problems like misfiring spark plugs which can reduce a car’s fuel efficiency by as much as 30%. • Replace Air Filters. Replacing clogged air filters can improve your gas mileage by as much as 10%! The Car Care Council recommends changing your car’s air and oil filters about every three months or 3,000 miles.

• Rent an apartment- Most rental properties have a minimum credit score that applicants are required to meet before they may be considered for approval. • Need a loan- Most people need to take out a loan when they make a major purchase like a house or a car. Monthly payments and the amount of interest a person must pay are determined by their credit worthiness. • Apply for a job- Some employers may request to check your credit score to determine whether or not you’re responsible.
TAKE SIMPLE STEPS IN COLLEGE TO START BUILDING GOOD CREDIT BY: • Using a credit card. Have one or two credit cards (no more than that!) to use for buying groceries or gas. Only make purchases that you can afford to pay off each month. • Paying your bills on time and in full. One of the easiest ways to get your credit on the right track is by paying all of your bills promptly and by paying the entire balance due each month.
Check out our “Bank and Finance” section for local credit-building businesses!

HEALTH 23
Healthy Eating 101 Brought to you by Campus
Plan-It
• Don’t Skip Meals. It’s easy to forgo a meal when you have a million things on your schedule, but eating three well-balanced meals throughout the day is important for your health. Make sure to “refuel” every few hours to help regulate your metabolism, improve your concentration and energy levels, and prevent overeating later. • Have a Variety of Easy, Healthy Snacks Available. You’ll be much less tempted to munch on chips and candy if you keep your room stocked with nutritional, satisfying alternatives. Some ideas include: whole grain crackers, fresh fruit and veggies, unsalted nuts, high fiber cereal, or oatmeal.
• Don’t Be Too Drastic! Becoming a healthier eater doesn’t mean you have to suddenly change your entire lifestyle. Extreme changes will be much harder to stick with in the long run. Check out our “Food & Dining” and “Health, Fitness & Medical” sections for healthy places around your university!
Looking for an internship? JOIN THE FUN!
• Enlist Your Friends. Share your goal of eating healthier with your friends and roommates. Oftentimes, they’ll be inspired to make positive changes with you. Motivate each other by finding great recipes on Pinterest to share or by taking turns cooking each other a healthy meal.
Apply Online! studentmediagroup.com/internships
• Stay Hydrated. All other obvious benefits aside, drinking plenty of water is key to maintaining a proper diet. Studies have shown that the sensation of thirst is commonly misinterpreted as hunger. Drink a full glass of water whenever you feel hungry and wait several minutes—if you’re still craving food, reach for one of the healthy snacks listed above. Also, be sure to drink water frequently during the day.
