The institute is located in the heart of Leipzig’s histo-‐ rical downtown. The university’s main buildings, the buildings for seminars, as well as the libraries and the cafeteria are all within the same vicinity. Spacious rooms, located in an architecturally prominent buil-‐ ding (Werkbund 1908) are the premises of a modernly equipped lecture auditorium, a seminar room, rooms for group work, workshops, and studios. Here students work either under direction of an instructor or inde-‐ pendently on their artistic works. The large studios, the painting workshops and the studios for sculpture and object art also provide for a workshop for typo-‐ graphy (historical hand setting room), for a workshop for product design and papermaking, as well as for a photography studio with photographic laboratory and for an installation and action art room. In the courses which familiarize students with the nature of artistic works and processes, insights in the structure and developement of artistic production, ǡ ϐ Ǥ learn about the language of form and color, as well as about the particular nature and development of arti-‐

stic creativity. In dealing with these topics, examples of modern art are viewed and students gain insights into the important developmental tendencies and conceptual problems of art as well. The courses in didactics, which relate to the topics mentioned above, familiarize students with the nature, structure, and development of pedagogically guided processes and the particular nature of their results. Through various types of practical training in schools as well as through participation in non school-‐related projects, students turn theory into practice and gain knowledge through individual experience. The artistic, practical training is conceptually connected with contemporary art and provides a variety of possi-‐ Ǥ ơ -‐ niques, from drawing, painting, and printing techniques, to techniques for object art, calligraphy, installation art, performance art, multimedia design (ex. video), as well as techniques for commercial art crafts and design are learned in class and can become the foundations for individual exploration. During the course of studies, working independently and intensely in selected areas becomes increasingly important. The required literature for studies and research can be found in the special libraries of the faculty, in the Museum of Fine Art, and in the Gallery for Contempora-‐ ry Art. The university’s library and the German National Library are apart from these popular places for reading and studying.
