KATAYOON FOROUHESH 2019
CONSTRUCTION 2019, Video series, A) 3:15 min B) 3:19 min
CONSTRUCTION During my residency at Belgrade Art Studio Residency, there was protests every Saturday in the street against Vucic the president of Serbia to force him to resign. At the same time at the TRG republic square, there was a reconstruction plan. The opposition leader were so critical towards the corruption in the reconstruction. I did two performances, first by walking with a ball around the circumference of the square and meanwhile I was walking with the ball the ball went throught the fences and entered the prohibited area. and the second one was an effort to walk with a stone.

The art work is to explore the socially constructed reality of images we are surrounded with. In this video I tried to work with war and news media archive footage, exploring the invasive nature of these images in the age of social media and big data. These barrage of images in different forms and places, from the screens of cell phones and laptops to large advertisement billboards in streets, render us, as citizens and thinking subjects, numb and senseless. While in the age of Trump and fake PROJECT ONE news these questions has found new immediacy, in 2018, video, 2 minute essence they are the logical consequence of post https://vimeo.com/manage/277718572/general 9/11 “war on terror frameworks.
Untouched Series 2013, Digital print, 30 x 40 cm
‘Untouched’ is a series of scan photography which explore the traces of unpredictable contacts that I in public places. This project has been performed with a rolling scanner, in order to recreate the similar sense of touch. Applying the scanner on one surface for documenting the traces of touches of two body which reminds me of this intimate, undesired and sometimes shocking contacts with unknown and random persons.

About Me
I am a multidisciplinary artist working primarily with photography and video. Originally from Iran and currently based in the London, United kingdom. I obtained my B.A. in Print Media at the University of Art in Tehran, Iran, and continued my studies by pursuing my M.A. in Graphic Moving Image at the University of the Arts London, UK. My main focus is reinterpreting the sociopolitical problems, and restrictions through my personal experience and view. I try to create an engaging situation for common experience with audience. Art played important role for me as a mean to challenge limitations and to criticise social problems. Also on a personal level, art had such a liberating effect like nothing else.
– Motivational letter Max 500 words. Please explain why you would like to take part in the residency, how it is relevant to your practice, and a brief project proposal if you have one in mind (this is not mandatory). The reason that I am applying to The New Flesh Artists’ Residency is that I believe my art practice needs to improve and develope in different areas. First, developing the script and story from the initial idea, second to create personal signature in my work and enhance the production quality and applying the right technics. I currently work and initiate the idea to investigate and explore my personal way to address the social and political issues through art. What my art work lack is the supervision and mentorship, being in the environment with curators, mentors and having the space to discuss and get feedback about my work, to understand the weakness and strength of it. It is not simple to have access to the the proffessional equipments and facilities without having the financial support and also the right network. The facilities and equipments of Academy Costumes, And also the curatorial and technical support from art collective ZOOX would be very valuable to provide the oppurtunity of having access to the substanstial sources. Currently I am research for the video that investigate the fear in the modern society and it is mainly based on the book by Paul Virlio “ The Administration of Fear”. I plan to propose it during the residency program. And finally, It helps to deepen my insight and knowledge in moving image and I belive being able to dialogue with the network of other artists and proffessionals would be very inspiring. I believe The New Flesh Artists’ Residency would help me to create a new Moving Image piece of work under the supervision of proffesional.
