very 15 minutes, thundering train passes by the concrete bridge atop of quiet, shady, neighborhood of Gondangdia. It is then followed by the rustling sound of motor rickshaw known as bajaj, an India-originated transportation that has become an icon of the surrounding area of Menteng. Central Jakarta isn’t massive. In fact the area is the smallest among other four administrative cities, yet it holds the most important part of this great capital of Indonesia. From presidential palace, central bank to high-ranking government offices are situated in the Central. Not to mention embassies, multinational corporations regional offices where mostly found home in the main district and avenue of Thamrin and Sudirman, as also Menteng residential area.
W
ith all of the grandeur, Central Jakarta is already the most important area on its own from the other four. But there is another aspect that makes this area special. Something that has nothing to do with diplomatic matters, government-related substance or billion dollars of transactions. Something that is more into sentimental rather than material. Something that is rooted than contemporary: Central Jakarta and its nostalgia. Allow me to take you back to some area in the Central that worth to be explored only for the sake of nostalgic nuance it offers, where thank heaven food is non-other, an essential part.
W
here should we begin? Pasar Baru and its surrounding area perhaps is the most iconic culinary and culture hub in Central Jakarta. Established in 1820 during Dutch colonialization, this plaza is perhaps Southeast Asia’s oldest shopping district with galore of food and fashion establishments. Cultural assimilation taken place within this area is inevitable and today is proven with the existence of different religious houses, from Indian to Chinese temples and some churches. When it comes to food, people might wander through the laneways of Gang Kelinci to find Bakmi Aboen and Bakmi Gang Kelinci as two of Pasar Baru’s icons. At the front side of Pasar Baru, situated Tropic Restaurant where time seems to stop there. The place offers old-school Italian-Dutch style ice cream, along with the vintage aluminium plate. Just at the other block, there is Shantung restaurant specializes on Chinese dumpling known as kuo tie (gyoza in Japanese cuisine). Separated by canal, you might see the Neoclassical building of Jakarta Art Theatre, initiated by Daendels and built during Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles time in Java back in 1814.

N
ow, let us walk into the very heart of Central Jakarta to the green, shady, quiet, liveable, pedestrian-friendlyneighbourhood, Menteng. It is no longer a secret for Jakarta people that the word Menteng mostly associated with “lavish society” that lives inside million-dollars price mansion. But there
is another spark that popped into one’s mind when they hear the word Menteng; an area rich with nostalgia and stories. As the city’s oldest and first modern housing estate, Menteng is essential for many of Jakartan’s life. Memory of cycling with grandfather under the subtle ray of late afternoon sun in Teuku Umar street; Having a plate of nasi goreng with friends near the forest-y Suropati Park; or accompanying your mother or grandmother doing grocery or shopping to one of the traditional market and mid-scale shopping center in Cikini area. But now, Menteng has gained another stature, which is as one of the capital’s gastronomic destination. The Cikini Triangle where three streets mushroomed with eateries collides, Jalan R.P Soeroso, Jalan Cikini Raya and Jalan Teuku Cik Ditiro. Those who look for classic food of Jakarta of Betawinese cuisine, may choose a type of Indonesian boiled salad known as gado-gado which consists of boiled potato, boiled vegetables and spicy-savoury peanut sauce at the tiny yet legendary GadoGado Bon Bin or people’s favorite nasi uduk (Betawinese coconut rice) at Nasi Uduk Gondangdia. Those who eager to taste Indonesia’s founding father’s appetite might want to try Restoran Trio’s delectable deep-fried frog legs in butter sauce or Cantonese-style gohyong (a type of roulade, deep fried) on the restaurant’s nostalgic dining room. There are many nostalgic eateries on the area besides those two. Jakarta’s very first Japanese restaurant built in 1962, Kikugawa, also situated on the neighborhood. Not to mention, one of the earliest Betawinese style soup known as soto Betawi offered by Soto Betawi Haji Ma’ruf inside Taman Ismail Marzuki art complex. These establishments are not only part but also true witnesses of the many eras of Jakarta. People change, government changes, economy

trolling at the leafy Menteng area in the gentle morning or the bustling afternoon is nice, but how about the evening scene? There is one street that could delight any of you, the nocturnal gastronome, which is Sabang area or formally known as Jalan Agus Salim. Starting from 5 PM, this street situated precisely behind Thamrin Avenue will be busy with street food vendors setting up their tent, opening up their carts, pulling up green plastic chairs, prepping the fiery burner and wok, and these soon will end up as something delicious. On 6 PM, what previously chaotic now will become a scenery of gastronomic delicacy. Smokes will steam up to the thin air from grilled sate vendor. Sound of stir frying wok is a sign of any good nasi goreng or bakmi. There will be people sitting around the street, piling up the road with their immense appetite for comforting meal after gruelling office hours. Many vendors have been selling what they have been making for years. In fact, the first fruit pie store known as Sakura Anpan is cramped between many low-storey buildings on Sabang Street, as also Hot Pot Garden, one of the pioneers of hot-pot dish in this megapolis.
I
f I had to write about what Central Jakarta has to offer your palate entirely, the story will never end, as this district is the cherry on top of this massive megacity. The best way to understand Central Jakarta is to get out of couch, take a Transjakarta bus or commuter line, stop at your preferred terminal, and have a walk. Absorbs Central Jakarta through its streets. Perhaps as you walk, en passant you would discover one or two delicious vendors that other Jakarta’s people have never encountered.

Rumah Makan Medan Baru
"I love this place because they pay attention to detail on preparing each component of the soto; from the risol, the unique and flavorful broth and even to its noodles. This is my family’s choice since I was little.”
"What I love from Medan Baru is the combination of Minang flavor with Medan-style execution with strong Malay influence. I love its burung punai and of course the restaurant’s iconic snapper-head curry. Absolutely tasty!”
Apart from the district’s famously known lamb soup, Roxy area is also home to another kind of soupy dish known as soto mie. Started in 1965, Soto Mie Kota Udang is undoubtedly a culinary veteran from the area. Found on a very modest food kiosk, this place could cater to no more than twenty customers, especially during busy lunch hour. Customers keep returning to this place simply because it offers the appetizing dish; an enchanting bowl of Soto Mie, a harmonious combination of sliced crispy golden-brown risol (spring roll), chunky tendon and gummy shank, fresh and flavorful-slightly-spicy broth, fresh and tomato wedges, string-y noodles to the notto-be-missed crispy gnetum cracker (emping).
Around the tourist destination of Pasar Baru, restaurant Medan Baru is a favorite among many Jakartan who long for a MalayMinang cuisine in the capital. Medan Baru is a restaurant with strong Malay, Indian and Minang influence; three of the largest ethnicities in Medan, North Sumatera. Medan Baru serves dishes such as Minang-style crispy beef jerky (dendeng) with chili chunks, variety of Padangnese food such as curry and balado and the most iconic snapper head curry cooked in aromatic broth along with carambola slices and curry leaves. “Although the place is kind of tricky to find, I really love Queens Tandoor. I have visited this restaurant many times with friends or family and every time, we always order plenty from their menu selection. My favorite is the Indian dessert called kulfi. It has a tasteful aromatic and fragrance that oozes to the air when it’s served at your table.”

Gado-Gado Bon Bin
Nasi Uduk Kebon Kacang Zainal Fanani
"Apart from the tragedy in December 2014 that burnt down the entire iconic place, Bakmi Gondangdia still preserves its classic Hong Kong-style noodle recipe since the very first time the place opened its doors more than 50 years ago.”
"Gado-Gado Bon Bin is truly a legend in the heart of Menteng. What I love about Gado-Gado Bon Bin is always either the quality of its vegetables and also the restaurant’s iconic peanut sauce that Ibu Lanny, the owner, used to grind every day, before she passed away in 2014. Their Chinese-style asinan is also worth the shot.”
"Speaking of nasi uduk, especially in Kebon Kacang area, Zainal Fanani is my favorite. As one of the oldest Nasi Uduk places in the area, Zainal Fanani’s nasi uduk is renowned for its very fragrant aroma and rich taste. What I like from this particular place is that besides the perfect grainy yet moist rice texture, the combination of peanut-based sambal and the original chili-based sambal that merge into a delectable dipping is the best.”
Situated at the charming laneway of Cikini IV, Gado Gado Bon Bin is not only the home of capital’s most well-known gado-gado (boiled salad with peanut sauce, an icon of Jakarta traditional dish) but also an institution, a place of community on its own. This humble eatery started serving in 1960 and since then has been satisfying its loyal fans with its legendary gado-gado dressed with smooth peanut sauce as well as their sweet tangy asinan. When you visit this place, you will share experience with elderly guests, reminiscing their sweet younger days. Apart from gado-gado and asinan, lontong cap gomeh-a spicy, savory and slightly sweet soupy dish that comes with chicken and rice cake is definitely another worth-theshot for your taste bud.
The absolute comfort food for people of Jakarta, nasi uduk, is a complete rice set meal consists of many items; from deep fried chicken or fish to fresh raw vegetables to dip with its sambal. There is one certain area in Jakarta that’s identical with nasi uduk: it is Kebon Kacang area. Within the area, at almost every corner, you will easily spot nasi uduk places. But there is one name, a legend, Zainal Fanani. Zainal Fanani’s place isn’t that spacious nor air conditioned. The place is as modest as the others, but its reputation for the tastiest nasi uduk is paramount. Fragrant and savory rice, deliciously sweet and spicy sambal to flavorful main proteins sum up to a luscious experience.

“What I like from this place is the noodle is very simple and has springy texture which reminds me of a place that I used to visit long time ago. I always order their noodles with chicken, as simple as that without any additional condiments.”
“People usually get confused when I mentioned Henis as a great place to enjoy noodles, because this place is more famous for their baked goods such as the scrumptious meatball bread. The truth is, Henis actually make delicious chicken and pork noodles, and they are among my favorites.”

PREV Coffee with Hendri Kurniawan Coffee Expert @kulikopi
When it comes to ‘specialty coffee’ in Indonesia, Hendri (or known as his instagram handle @kulikopi) is the person you’ll go to. He started the third-wave coffee movement here in Jakarta right from the middle of a traditional market. Through ABCD School of Coffee he trained many people who are interested in the coffee business, and not forget to mention, He is also a certified World Barista Championship judges and World Coffee Events Representatives. Together with him, we will explore some of his favorite coffee-joints around West Jakarta.
Koultoura
Say Something Coffee
“To be honest, I rarely go to coffee shops again unless I know my coffee was in a good hands. I know the owner very well, Lydia, the accountant that turns to a roaster, she is very passionate and knowledgeable about coffee. The place is rather tiny, but I do like the vibes of this kind of coffee shop.”
“There’s a bit hesitation of the owner when they wants to open a ‘Specialty Coffee’ Shop here in West Jakarta, but they’re able to proof that a great combinations of products and space will make it works, even though there’s many tough competition around. They really have a great ‘Brunch Food’ that I really like”
“This place is my go-to place. The people there is just like a family to me. They also roast their own coffee and recently had a second branch in Kemang”
Another pioneer of specialty coffee shop in West Jakarta, Koultoura is a go-to place when you look for a great coffee and food. The two storey building was quite spacious and homey. They have an unique mural of animallike characters on the wall that makes the interior is a bit fun and also family-friendly. They serve various menu from brunch-style food to Indonesian’s favorite like balinese pork belly or chicken salted egg. Their pastries and dessert like almond croissant or ‘tolak angin’ ice cream (flavour made from local common cold herbal concoction) was great too!
If you are looking for some caffeine-boost around office area, Say Something Coffee is definitely a place to go to. They open quite early to cater all the office-workers. The ambiance is quite homey and warm. They also have quite extensive pastry menu, not much for heavier dish though. Since they also roast their own coffee, you will expect a variety of coffee beans in here.

Tucked in a tight alley near a local campus, 9 Cups Coffee Roastery is one of the pioneer of specialty coffee shop in West Jakarta. They roast their own coffee on their basement and they are very passionate about it. The atmosphere kind of reminds you of a tiny coffee shop in Japan. You have to make your order on second floor (where the coffee bar is) and you get to sit down on the basement. Of course you will meet some college students working their homeworks, but if you are interested with their coffee, 9 Cups Coffee Roastery is the place you can try. Jl. Taman S. Having garnered more than 300.000 followers on Instagram, their blog about food review and travel cannot be taken easily. On one fine Sunday morning, @AnakJajan took Top Tables’ team for a hearty breakfast and shared their favorite places to have a fulfilling breakfast in the North.
Bubur Ayam Mangga Besar 1 – Pluit
Wing Heng - Kelapa Gading
"We love Nasi Anai Galung from Pematangsiantar near our house in Muara Karang. What you have to try is their rice meal that consists of crispy fried fish, stir-fried Medan style glass noodle with fragrant tauco, and an additional Minang-style rendang. It's a true gem around the North Jakarta area!"
“Nothing can beat a nicely done, comforting, tasty bubur (congee). This place is a true bubur heaven. You can find any toppings from the classic boiled chicken, chicken offal, the thousand years old egg, to fresh aromatic coriander leaves and crispy cakwe cake."
"This place is a true dim sum oasis for us. What we love the most from Wing Heng, is not just all the dim sum are nicely executed and precisely seasoned, but also how they are focused on the ingredients quality and composition. For example; you will taste the juicy, chunky, fatty meat when you bite their shaumai instead of a dense texture of overlyfloured dough. It's just very good!"
Mangga Besar area is one of the sought after culinary alley in Jakarta. Aside from its reputation for their shady nightlife scene, Mangga Besar is food haven. The area is also the very home for the most iconic bubur (Congee) in Jakarta, Bubur Ayam Mangga Besar. The North Jakarta outlet in Pluit also shares the same value and certainly, delicousness. Savoury congee, generous amount of toppings such as the delicate and juicy garlic ginger chicken, tasty tender gizzard, crispy cakwe to the herby coriander leaves sum up to a one comforting meal.
In the morning, Wing Heng will always be a destination to look for the tastiest arrays of dim sum in Muara Karang area. A haven for you to do yum cha (Chinese morning dim sum routine), their salted egg bun should not be missed. Wing Heng's dim sums are all house made as your palate may recognize its difference from other type of dim sum. From the more generous using of meat in comparison with flour, to their very tasty seasonings that will make you wanted more and more. Perhaps you just crave for a good hakkau or chunky shiumai, but trust us, you will ended up by having a pile of bamboo steamers that consists of different items ready to be savor.

Nasi Anai Galung presents a dish from Pematang Siantar are. The look resembles Betawinese nasi uduk or Malaysian nasi lemak. A complete set dish consists of variety of toppings of your choice from fried crispy anchovy, green chili chicken, savory glass noodles, spicy potato to vegetables and delectable rendang. Nasi Anai Galung place itself is far from properly-designed restaurant. It is a humble establishment, no air-con yet a food destination on its own. PREV Savoring the North with Adhika Maxi Chef Owner of UNION Brasserie & AMKC
Adhika Maxi is probably Jakarta’s most important chef when it comes to dining and the capital’s addiction of a hang-out culture. He co-built Union Brasserie, the capital’s hippest restaurant in early 2010’s and contributed to modern urban eating lifestyle. He also owns AMKC restaurant at Thamrin and Izakaya Kai at Pluit, North Jakarta area. On one fine afternoon, the Gordon Ramsay protégé shares to Top Tables how he savors the evening around where he lives in North Jakarta.
Martabak Bandung Jaya
Aroma Sop Seafood
“This place is like an oasis of street food delicacy in Pluit area. I always love this place for its various choices of mouth-watering food; from Padang food, Medanese pork rice to Javanese kue putu.”
“Bandung Jaya’s egg martabak is legendary, but between me and my wife each of us has our own favorite. I love chocolate martabak without peanut while she prefers the thin and crispy martabak.”
“Every time I visit this place, there’s no way I skip the steamed fish with its vibrant, fragrant, yellow sauce made with torch ginger flower. It is so good!”
Pluit Sakti is one of the major streets in Pluit area. Apart from its main purpose as the core access to many of Pluit housing areas, this street also tends some food destinations for its residents and one of the most visited spots is the food court. Food court (or pujasera in Bahasa Indonesia, abbreviation for Pusat Jajanan Serba Ada, a one-stop food and snack centre) at Pluit Sakti has almost everything to satisfy your appetite. From Malay-style spring roll known as popiah which is known as Medanese folks’ favorite; freshly boiled blood clams dipped in sweet and spicy sauce; to Chineseoriginated barbecue pork, stirfried kwetiau noodle and ginger and garlic seasoned boiled chicken.
Nothing beats the joy and delight of munching on either crispy yet tender beefy and spicy egg-based martabak or the dense, buttery and creamy sweet martabak with cheese or chocolate topping. As one of Jakarta’s most beloved tea time snacks, martabak is anything but boring. One of Pluit’s most favorite items is Martabak Bandung Jaya at Pluit Sakti. Unlike any other martabak that only serves from early evening to midnight, this place is up for business from late afternoon to feed early crowds’ craving for martabak.
Aroma Sop Seafood is one of North Jakarta’s best kept secret. From the very first time you walk into the fairly-quiet parking area, the fragrant steaming sauces aroma oozes to your nose and awakens your appetite. Aroma’s holy grail is its steamed fish in yellow broth with exotic flavor of torch ginger flower that you can order along with sweet and spicy grilled fish or the popular sweet and salty salted egg calamari with aromatic fried curry leaves.

Nasi Bebek Mak Isa
Sate dan Tongseng Pak Budi
“I’m from West Java, a Sundanese man, and to be at this place, eating a bowl of lovely made noodle which served with tripe is like a travel back home to Bandung. I like the simplicity of Bakmi Tasik and the communal feeling that this dish brings. How could I complain a comfort food made with heart?”
“For me it is hard to find a good Madurese or Surabayan style dark, spicy fried duck. But here, I’m blessed with the existence of this modest spot. I like the not-too-spicy sauce that bathe portions of intensely seasoned local duck. With warm fluffy rice and freshly sliced cucumber for me is to enjoy Mak Isa at its best.”
“Well, this place is legendary, and that’s pretty much all that I have to say. Looking at the crowd, we can see how people love this place so much, and of course I do too, because of the simplicity. Its grilled lamb satay using best quality kecap manis (sweet sowy sauce) and the tongseng in excellent traditional style are comfort foods at its best!”
Nasi Bebek Mak Isa is perhaps one of a few gems from the farthest border of East Jakarta. This modest place is famous for their local duck braised in spiced broth then deep fried until crisp. This golden perfection is then bathed in a ladle-full of Madurese-style oily spice paste that gives multilayer of spices sensations inside your mouth. When it comes to price, Nasi Bebek Mak Isa is considerably affordable compared to other duck vendors. So if you are looking for different types of duck dishes, put Mak Isa on your list to savor. Here’s a tip: enjoy a plate of this modest but flavorful dish with a cold glass of freshly squeezed orange juice for maximum satisfaction.
When you visit this place, the first thing you will see is the many cars parked and smokes that fills the air. Then, waiter with many years of loyalty will asked you to order from their revered menu. Pak Budi’s lamb satay is unlike any of lamb satay on the area. A vibrant yet fragrant taste of toasted coriander seeds appears on your first bite of that smokey meaty skewer, as also their tongseng or Javanese-style thick stew. Not only revered by Jakartans, this place is nationally famous as Pak Budi regularly joins one of Indonesia’s biggest street food event, with national exposure.
