It is in the small rural community of Camporeale in the Alto Belice in the province of Palermo, on hill-slopes which overlook the plains of Mandranova, that the wine-company Alessandro di Camporeale was founded. This is an ancient land, rich in history, where agriculture has always predominated, marking out the

Behind the 160 hectares of land where we grow native and international grapes of unique characteristics, is our consciousness that the wine is born and developed in the countryside and not in cellars. Settesoli’s varieties do in fact include the typical grapes of the Mediterranean, such as the Grecanico, Inzolia and Nero d’Avola, and other varieties recently imported to Sicily such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio, in addition to “innovative” varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc or Alicante Bouschet, which following some truly excellent results have risen from micro-production to large-scale cultivation. The final products are distributed in Italy and abroad with brands Settesoli and Inycon, available from large-scale organised distributors, and Mandrarossa, top line dedicated for the HORECA channel.

In the early 1980’s Salvatore Di Gaetano’s passion for wine drew him to a unique place: Contrada Firriato in the extraordinary countryside outside the city of Trapani. It is a land, which bears the deep and indelible signs of wine-growing and the culture of wine, nestled between Trapani’s marvelous sea and coastline and the majestic rock on which the town of Erice stands. The FIRRIATO wine cellar takes its name from this area in Trapani’s countryside. It is the vernacular term for the word “turned”, which, by some strange linguistic alchemic process reaches back to the clos of French estates. The logo created by Firriato seems to capture the entire universe in a clearly defined space, almost as if it were

The face and voice behind this entrepreneurial success are those of Mrs. Vinzia Novara Di Gaetano. After the latest acquisitions, the Di Gaetano family now owns six estates: four in the Trapani countryside, one on Mount Etna and, last but not least, one in Favignana, the largest of the Egadi Islands, facing the Trapani coastline.

The Feudo di Santa Tresa estate dates back to the 17th century, probably to 1697, when it was part of the Contea di Modica, one of the region’s most ancient areas of wine production. The name Santa Tresa derives from the Sicilian pronunciation, which has shortened the name Teresa to Tresa. Nature is bountiful here, with the Sicilian sun perfectly ripening the best fruits in the Mediterranean basin. Lying close to the Mediterranean, Feudo di Santa Tresa’s vineyards benefit from cooling sea breezes, but at the same time they are far enough away from the sea (8 kilometres) to limit any damaging effect that salty air could

bring. The soil on the estate has ideal characteristics: a 40 - 100 centimetre surface layer of light red sandy loam on a well-drained limestone base, which helps to guarantee a constant supply of vital water. Today, the Feudo di Santa Tresa estate has around 50 hectares of vineyards. The minute selection of the clones and rootstocks and the vine density (ca. 5000/5500 vines per hectare) means cultivation techniques can be simple, while at the same time strictly controlled. The natural quality of the vines and grapes is so exceptional that it would be foolhardy to intervene more than absolutely necessary.

acres). The Contessa Entellina winery is located in the heart of western Sicily. On its 650 acres Donnafugata cultivates 17 different grape varieties, both indigenous and international, to produce complex wines with great personality. On Pantelleria, a volcanic island lying between Sicily and Africa, Donnafugata can rely on 170 acres planted with Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria) and a winery in the Khamma district. The vines, trained in the Pantelleria bush system shaped by the wind, are cultivated on small terraced plots bounded by drystone walls. An environment of heroic viticulture gives rise to the production of Ben Ryè, a complex and charming Passito di Pantelleria Dop.

Last year Zabù became part of the Farnese Group, fulfilling the strategic alliance previously formed with Cantina Cellaro, the whole project headed by winemaker Filippo Baccalaro who had started it all 5 years ago. Recently the winery has set up a new programme of selection of the vineyards to try to further improve the excellent quality of the wines.
