In the early 1980’s Salvatore Di Gaetano’s passion for wine drew him to a unique place: Contrada Firriato, in the extraordinary countryside by the city of Trapani. It is a land which bears the deep and indelible signs of wine-growing and the culture of wine, nestled between Trapani’s marvelous sea and coastline and the majestic rock on which the town of Erice stands. The Firriato wine cellar takes its name from this area in Trapani’s countryside. It is the vernacular term for the word “turned”, which, by some strange linguistic alchemic process reaches back to the clos of French estates. The logo created by Firriato seems to capture the entire universe in a clearly defined space, almost as if it were to protect what makes it so unique and matchless. Many prizes and awards have followed, but, most important of all, favor with consumers has grown steadily, allowing the firm to travel all over the world, because the world has finally discovered Sicily and its wines. The face and voice behind this entrepreneurial success are those of Mrs. Vinzia Novara Di Gaetano. After the latest acquisitions, the Di Gaetano family now owns six estates: four in the Trapani countryside, one on Mount Etna and, last but not least, one in Favignana, the largest of the Egadi Islands, facing the Trapani coastline. Total hectares of vineyard: 320 Cultivated grape varieties: Nero d’Avola, Perricone, Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Inzolia, Grillo, Zibibbo, Cataratto, Carricante Total bottles produced: 4,250,000 Export quota: 60% Export markets: More than 50 countries. Principally: USA, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Japan, Brazil, Canada and China.

Cottanera, with its frontier viticulture, is one of the most extraordinary companies in Italian oenology today. This high-quality firm, which sinks its roots in the unique and generous lands of Mt. Etna, was started in the early 1990’s, when brothers Enzo and Guglielmo Cambria decided to revive and transform the company which their father Francesco had established back in the 1960’s. This new project brought about a renovation of the firm, from with the vinification facilities to the 55 hectares of vineyards located on the slopes of Mt. Etna, 700m above sea level. The vineyards are not irrigated, and nearly all operations are carried out by hand by a team of 25 women. These same women are involved in the harvest: an ancient tradition on Mt. Etna which Cottanera intends to preserve. The name of the company comes from an ancient village that runs alongside the family vineyards, on the banks of the Alcantara river: a unique, spellbinding, fascinating land, highly appreciated by nature lovers. Cottanera’s wines come from this wild and mountainous environment, at the edge of extreme nature, and are characterised by the particular mineral mix produced by the volcanic soils; they are elegant, refined and very well balanced. This is a natural chemical laboratory, with top quality winemaking science, which the firm’s owners call ‘volcan-enology’. The black grapes grown by the company include the autochthonous Nerello Mascalese and Cappuccio, and the international Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Mondeuse (vine from Alta Savoia). The white grapes include Inzolia and Carricante and the international Viogner. Total hectares of vineyard: 55 Cultivated grape varieties: nerello mascalese, nerello cappuccino, merlot cabernet, mondeuse, carricante Total bottles produced: 300,000 Export quota: 40% Export markets: Usa, Uk, Japan, Belgium, Germany Swizerland, China, Russia

The Etna area, with the peculiarities that make it unique in the world, is “an island within the island”: the wild variations in climate and in soils, provoked by the accumulation of eruptive material, yield a diverse environment which contributes decisively to high-quality wine production. Grapevines are cultivated between 300 to 900 meters above sea level, extending up to 1,100 meters. The plants are trained with the traditional “alberello” (bush) method. They are spaced at 1,15 x 1,15 meters, reach a density of approximately 8,000 plants per hectare, and are trained to a central stem with three or four short spurs, which are renewed each year. They are supported by a chestnut ‘tutor’ to which the trunk and the annual vegetation is tied. The cultivation is simple: pruning and the renewing of the used poles takes place in winter, in the springtime there is the ‘suckering’, the cleaning of the grass with little grass cutters and trimmed by hand, while thinning out and de-leafing is carried out in late July. The vineyards of Tenuta di Fessina are located in Rovittello, a small part of the town of Castiglione di Sicilia. Along highway 120, a pathway leads to and across the historic railway line that runs circumnavigates Etna. There you will find the small hamlet of houses and ‘palmenti’, wine-making cellars which originally belonged to Mr. Musmeci, to whom the ‘cru’ of Nerello Mascalese is dedicated. An eighteenth-century “palmento” (millstone) in lava stone, to which the surrounding families all had access. Rovittello is a peaceful place, situated at 650 meters above sea level. It has rigid winters and fresh, rainy springs, hot and dry summers, and long, warm autumns with large temperature variations between daytime and night-time. The centuries-old vineyards slope down toward valleys, gradually losing altitude, broken by the presence of drystone walls known as “rasole”. Fessina’s “alberelli” are suggestive sculptures of time, pruned by various generations. Some they are strong and erect, others are contorted and twisted upon themselves. Total hectares of vineyard: 13 Cultivated grape varieties, production area and type of soil: Chardonnay, Segesta (Trapani), calcareous clay soil at 600 meters above sea level - Nero d’Avola, Val di Noto (Siracusa), calcareous clay soil rich in microfossils of the deep sea environment - Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Carricante, Castiglione di Sicilia, Santa Maria di Licodia, Milo (Etna), sandy soil, very rich in texture mixed with volcanic ash of very dark color, typical of lava flows; altitude 670 mt. above sea level. Total bottles produced: 65,000 Export quota: 50% Export markets: USA, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, Russia, Australia, France, England, Germany, Austria, Poland.

Azienda Vinicola Benanti was established in 1988 by Giuseppe Benanti, a pharmaceutical entrepreneur from Catania then in his mid 40’s, who decided to turn his family’s traditional passion into an ambitious and challenging new venture, with the aim of preserving and developing the indigenous Etnean varieties and their unique territory. Since the early years, the winery has strived to respect the varietal characteristics of the Etnean varieties, by adopting and maintaining a very traditional approach and philosophy. Benanti is committed to producing the finest wines, derived from vineyards located on different slopes of Mount Etna, so as to highlight the uniqueness of the many different terroirs within the Doc region. Benanti is considered an iconic producer and a pioneer that has set a standard and inspired other wineries. With a history of twenty-two harvest seasons on Etna, Benanti has worked every day with an ever increasing passion to perfect and hone its competences. Rovittello Etna Doc Rosso (80% Nerello Mascalese, 20% Nerello Cappuccio) and Pietramarina Etna Doc Bianco Superiore (100% Carricante) were the first labels of Benanti and, alongside the renown Serra della Contessa Etna Doc Rosso (80% Nerello Mascalese, 20% Nerello Cappuccio), they are the cru wines of Benanti. The product offer also includes two entry level wines (Rosso di Verzella Etna Doc Rosso and Bianco di Caselle Etna Doc Bianco) and three niche labels that further illustrate Benanti’s aim to preserve and endorse the volcano’s indigenous varieties: Monovitigno Nerello Mascalese, Monovitigno Nerello Cappuccio and Noblesse Spumante Metodo Classico (100% Carricante). Total hectares of vineyard: 28 Cultivated grape varieties, production area and type of soil: cultivated grape varieties Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Carricante; production areas Castiglione di Sicilia, Passopisciaro, Milo, Viagrande, Santa Maria di Licodia; volcanic type of soil Total bottles produced: 100,000 Export quota: 50% Export markets: main countries USA, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, France, Spain, UK, Kazakhstan, Japan, Australia.

Valle dell’Acate (literally “Acate Valley”) is located in the historic Bidini domain, amid the winding hills of Valle del Dirillo. Giuseppe Jacono founded the cantina at the end of the 19th century. The Jacono family has been active in vine growing and winemaking ever since Vittoria was Sicily’s epicenter for exporting wine to France. Since then, this familial vocation has been safeguarded and handed down over generations, with the shared desire to establish a name for the family’s wines on an international level. Valle dell’Acate has continued this tradition, specializing in the cultivation of the most prized and productive autochthonous vines, creating superior wines, including the crown jewel of Sicilian winemaking: the Cerasuolo di Vittoria Docg. Over time the company’s spirit has become an authentic expression of the way it makes wine. Our longstanding winemaking tradition dovetails harmoniously with nature, resulting in wines of extraordinary quality and character. Today Valle dell’Acate, run by the latest generation of the Jacono family together with the Ferreri family, is one of the most important winemaking realities in southeastern Sicily, committed to further ennobling the longstanding vineyard traditions of the Ragusa province, within the Acate-Comiso-Vittoria triangle. Valle dell’Acate is one of the most well-known and active vineyards in southeastern Sicily. The company is run by Gaetana Jacono, part of the family’s sixth generation of winemakers. The company is committed to local territory, to bringing its traditional winemaking culture and products to the outside world, and to the use of eco-sustainable winemaking techniques. Total hectares of vineyard: 100 ha Cultivated grape varieties: Insolia, Grillo, Chardonnay, Nero d’Avola, Frappato, Syrah Total bottles produced: 400,000 Export quota: 60% Export markets: US, Europe and Canada, as well as emerging markets in Asia from Japan to China, Russia and India. The wines are well known and appreciated in Italy, and in Sicily in particular.

In the heart of Agrigento’s countryside lie lands with an ancient viticultural history, where countless rows of vineyards draw scenic geometries in the landscape. These magic lands are the Lands of Nero d’Avola, and find their best expressions in the wines of CVA Canicattì. Since 1969, over 480 vignerons united by their love for these lands have pooled their efforts in CVA Canicattì, a solid entrepreneurial project oriented towards the most demanding international markets. For over 40 years CVA Canicattì has been redefining the concept of viticultural quality, through important investments in technology and management. The work of every single vigneron is driven by a shared philosophy, and projected towards the valorisation of the agricultural and historical traits of one of Sicily’s most versed viticultural areas; the results of this passionate work can be found in every one of CVA Canicattì’s labels. The firm’s vignerons cultivate over 1000 ha of vineyards, each with unique pedoclimatic conditions and placed in a very prestigious historical and cultural context. The flag-bearer of this context is Diodoros: a wine which comes to life in a vineyard below the Temple of Juno, as part of a project for the valorisation of the Valley of the Temples’ historical vineyards, undertaken with the Authority for this archaeological site. Total hectares of vineyard: 1000 Cultivated grape varieties: Nero d’Avola, Nerello Cappuccio, Nerello Mascalese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cataratto, Grillo, Inzolia and Chardonnay Total bottles produced: 900,000 bottles Export quota: 60% Export markets: (Principally) USA, Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Japan, Canada and China.

As we all know Sicilian families are not small, and with 7 brothers and sisters and 15 nieces and nephews Planeta is no exception to that!! The Planeta family has always been in agriculture, and its story begins many generations ago with grape growing. Diego Planeta knew what incredible and magical wines could be produced in the Sicilian terroir – wines which could stand proudly next to the world’s finest – but it was only in the mid-eighties that the family decided to plant their first high-quality vineyards. It took ten years of experiments to find the most ideal grape varieties for their terroir, but also for the younger generation to learn about winemaking, marketing and sales. Finally, Alessio Planeta who is winemaker, Francesca Planeta the export and marketing director and Santi Planeta the national director were ready to embark into their venture. The first wines were produced in 1995 on the shores of lake “Arancio”, between Sambuca di Sicilia and Menfi in the province of Agrigento. Today the family owns five boutique wineries, and has expanded from Sambuca and Menfi to other very interesting viticultural areas in Sicily, such as Vittoria, Noto and Etna. The family’s vineyards extend over 975 acres of land, where classical Sicilian varieties like Grecanico, Frappato and Nero d’Avola are cultivated alongside national and international varieties. Cultivated grape varieties, production area and type of soil: • Sambuca di Sicilia (AG): Ulmo - very deep soils and pebbly. The upper layers are more calcareous, with portions of dark loam rich in vegetable content./ Maroccoli the soil is on average clayey and rich in silt. • Menfi (AG): Dispensa - medium depth, of average calcareous content with mixed yellow and dark-gray clays, and a moderately fine texture./ Gurra - Divided into two micro-zones, one composed of red sands with scarce skeletal soil and one characterized by very clayey calcareous soils. • Vittoria (RG): Dorilli e Mogli - composed mainly of red sands originating from what are called marine terraces, they are approximately one meter deep. Below this layer, there is another layer of tufa rich in limestone • Noto (SR): Buonivini - white, very calcareous soils, with a rich, small-sized skeleton texture characterized by an extremely high water retention capacity. Fine texture with light-coloured clayey fraction. • Castiglione di Sicilia (CT): Sciara Nuova e Montelaguardia - Mount Etna’s volcanic soils originated from the slow erosion of the lava stone, ash, and organic matter, and are rich in minerals. Total hectares of vineyard: 363 Total bottles produced: 2,300,000 Export quota: 55% Export markets: 72 countries including Usa, Canada, Brazil, Cina, Japan, Korea, Germany, Uk, Austria, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, Russia, Danemark, United Arab Emirates, Australia.

Donnafugata was created in Sicily by an enterprising family with 160 years’ experience in premium wines. Giacomo Rallo and his wife Gabriella, with their children José and Antonio, are engaged in an entrepreneurial project aimed at care for details and at putting people at the service of nature to make wines that increasingly correspond to the territory’s potential. The Donnafugata adventure began in 1983 in the Rallo family’s historic cellars in Marsala and at its Contessa Entellina vineyards in the heart of western Sicily; in 1989 Donnafugata arrived on the island of Pantelleria, starting to produce naturally sweet wines. Today Donnafugata has about 338 hectares (835 acres) of vineyards in production, of which 270 (667 acres) are in Contessa Entellina and 68 (168 acres) on Pantelleria. The name Donnafugata, literally “woman in flight” refers to the history of Queen Maria Carolina, wife of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who in the early 1800s - fleeing Naples on the arrival of Napoleons troops - sought refuge in the part of Sicily where the winery’s vineyards now stand. This event inspired the winery’s logo, the effigy of a woman’s head with windblown hair found on every bottle. It was Sicilian author Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, in his novel Il Gattopardo (The Leopard), who gave the name of Donnafugata to the country estates of the Prince of Salina which hosted the queen and now host the winery’s vineyards. Total hectares of vineyard: 270 hectares in Contessa Entellina located in 10 different districts. Cultivated grape varieties, production area and type of soil. Contessa Entellina: Ansonica, Catarratto, Grecanico, Chardonnay, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Nero d’Avola, Merlot, Syrah; lately we have also introduced Grillo, Fiano, Petit Manseng as well as Alicante Bouchet, Tannat, Petit Verdot and Pinot Noir, Soils: clayey with a sub-alkaline reaction. PANTELLERIA: Zibibbo; 68 hectares located in 12 different districts; Soil: sandy, originating from lava, deep and extremely fertile soils. Total bottles produced: 2,300,000 Export quota: 30% Export markets: More than 60 countries. Principally in the USA, Japan, Switzerland, Canada.

Tenuta Rapitalà spreads over 225 hectares in the area which slopes down from Camporeale towards Alcamo, on gentle hills between 300 and 600 metres high, on ground where clay and sand alternate. The perfect exposure and the composition of the soil make it ideal for the cultivation of the finest vine varieties. This ancient ground is dominated by a landscape of vines which follow each other unceasingly and form a geometry of lines which the sun and the colours of the Mediterranean transform into golden hills. Rapitalà is an authentic name, it comes from the Arabic (Rabidh-Allah “river of Allah” for the stream which flows through the vineyards) and testifies that this land has been cultivated since antiquity. Through the centuries generations of farmers have shaped its current form and the identity of the estate. In 1968 Hugues Bernard Comte de la Gatinais, born in St. Malo in France in 1940 and for eight years an offi cer in the French navy, married Gigi Guarrasi, descendant of a great family of Palermo. With her he engaged in a passionate and courageous adventure: the reconstruction, along modern lines, of the cellar destroyed by an earthquake in the Belice Valley. The Comte de la Gatinais devoted the greatest care to the varietal and agronomic reorganisation of the vineyards. Already 30 years ago in Sicily the great French vine varieties were planted alongside the indigenous ones. Today, the work, started by Hugues de la Gatinais and his wife Gigi, has been now carried on by their son Laurent, with the same care and passion. Rapitalà is today one of the most prestigious Sicilian cellars, undisputed leader of the island’s oenological revival. Total hectares of vineyard: 175 Cultivated grape varieties, production area and type of soil: vineyards at 300/600 metres a.s.l.; sandy on top and marl in the lowest part; Catarratto, Grillo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Viogner, Nero d’Avola, Pinot nero, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon. Total bottles produced: 2,800,000 Export quota: 30% Export markets: (Principally) France, Germany, Usa, Canada.

For eight generations, the Tasca d’Almerita family has dedicated itself passionately to nature, seeking to follow its desires and interpret its wisdom. Two hundred years of ceaseless experimentation in working the land, planting wheat, producing olive oil, creating Sicily’s largest private reservoir, have all been directed towards improving the quality of our work and its fruits. Tasca d’Almerita remains true to its double nature as pioneer of agricultural innovation and custodian of farming’s most authentic values, all the while caring for and protecting our territory’s unique ecosystem. Regaleali Estate is the heart of the company, covering 1,250 verdant acres amidst rolling hills on the border between Palermo and Caltanisetta. Tascante Estate consists of two ancient vineyards immersed in a chestnut wood on the slopes of Mount Etna, in a volcanic landscape that emanates a special energy. On the island of Salina, heartland of the Malvasia delle Lipari DOC dessert wine appellation, our vines are part of the exclusive Capofaro Estate wine resort. The Sallier de la Tour estate of our cousins, the Princes of Camporeale, lies in the Monreale DOC wine zone, an area with a long-standing vocation for the cultivation of Syrah. Finally, the Estate Whitaker Mozia, the Phoenician island/museum in the province of Trapani, owned by the Whitaker Foundation, where Tasca d’Almerita experiences the variety Grillo in a unique ecosystem.
