Hej, I’m Chris “My courses here are unique, and I can apply my knowledge in the real world.” Studying abroad has been something I wanted to do since starting college, and Stockholm was always on my radar. Maybe it had to do with a lot of my furniture at home being from IKEA or that one of my favorite Boston Bruins hockey players growing up was Loui Eriksson, a native Swede. Stockholm also seemed like a hidden gem in Europe; one that often gets overlooked when compared to the more well-known and touristy cities. I am so glad I took a chance and followed through on my plans, as my time abroad has been nothing short of wonderful, with a much needed change of scenery. The friends I have made at DIS are adventurous, curious, and committed to supporting one another through our abroad experience. My courses here are unique, and I can apply my knowledge in the real world. From class discussions to Field Studies to Study Tours, the city and culture are truly integrated into the curriculum. My advice to you is to have an open mind and put yourself out there. Take the class you find interesting. Talk to the classmate you didn’t think you had anything in common with. Visit a new neighborhood. Embrace the challenges you face and the mistakes you make and learn from them. You are in a new place with new people, so don’t be afraid to fill your semester with new memories and new friends. I wish you the best of luck in shaping your study abroad journey.

Stockholm
Famous for its progressive stance on equality and human rights, Stockholm offers you the perfect balance of history and modern living in serene surroundings.

Built on the water
Freedom to roam in nature
Action for climate change
If you choose Stockholm as your home, your classroom will be in a state-of-theart modern glass building right in the city center. From here, you can easily explore the strikingly beautiful capital that’s brimming with lively culture, innovative design, and friendly people. Enjoy allemansrätten, the Swedish democratic concept that nature belongs to everyone. This unique right allows you to roam freely in the countryside.
Comprised of 14 islands and a transit system that travels across waterways, Stockholm is well connected. 90 of the city’s 100 metro stations are decorated with paintings, sculptures, and mosaic. Stockholm is the only capital in the world situated both at the sea and on a lake, and the city is made up of one-third water, one-third greenery, and one-third urban areas.
Swedes love to celebrate traditional festivities, including throwing colorful crayfish parties in the fall, and meeting friends and family for fika.
Stockholm’s city center dates back to the 13th century and historical landmarks are scattered throughout the city – going back to the Viking Age.
Learn in a progressive & sustainable capital

If you choose Copenhagen as your home, you will attend classes in the heart of the city, within walking distance to the waterfront, research libraries, political agencies, quaint cafés, and rich cultural activities. Life is largely lived outdoors, and enjoyed at a slower pace than in many other capitals.
The city’s many public gardens and inventive urban spaces are a testament to its commitment to an ecofriendly lifestyle.
The medieval cobbled streets are easy to explore on foot or by bicycle, which is the preferred means of transportation in a city boasting 400 kilometers of bike lanes.

16th-century architecture is matched with world-class modern design, harbor baths, skate parks, food markets, and more.
Constantly on the cusp of innovation, the Danish capital is changing the global agenda for sustainability, design, architecture, and food.

Investigating Forensic Psychology
Sweden’s Leading Expert on Terrorism
Meiling Liu has been a cherished faculty member at DIS since the Stockholm program opened in 2016. Meiling holds a Ph.D. in Forensic Psychology and has worked internationally as a teacher, researcher, and organizational consultant.
Hans Brun is the leading expert on terrorism in Sweden, and regularly gives lectures to professionals in Europe and the U.S. At DIS, Hans is known for sharing his expertise with the DIS community, such as while on the panel of academic seminars focusing on the war in Ukraine and U.S.-Iran tensions.
What makes people commit crime? Are there gender differences? What is the role of perception? Meiling’s Core Course, Forensic Psychology, explores the Scandinavian countries’ legal systems, contrasting them with the American one. With her commitment to lifelong learning, Meiling investigates the field of forensic psychology together with her students – introducing a broader European context while on Study Tour to Edinburgh. In addition to this course, students can enroll in Meiling’s Forensic Psychology Lab, conducting their own research pertaining to topics such as lying behavior on social media, or eyewitness testimony. 18
What are the implications of terrorism for international politics in the 21st century? Hans’ elective course, Terrorism and Anti-Terrorism, offers a broad introduction to the concept of terrorism, focusing on the challenge posed by Al-Qaeda and the measures introduced against it. Students learn about the history, the objectives, and the “inner logic” of terrorists, and discuss possible counter-measures. In the course, Hans draws on his own current research as well as his personal connections in the field, taking students on unique Field Studies around Stockholm.

The more different our backgrounds, the richer our conversations and more comprehensive and sustainable - Silvia, DIS Faculty Member our solutions.”
Hands-On Medical Lab Experience
Building a Sustainable Future
Jack Xu, M.D., specializes in radiology and has been a resident physician in hospitals around Copenhagen. He is the initiator of the Medical Simulation Lab at DIS where he shares his expertise and passion for the medical field with students.
Silvia Dragomir is an urban planner, architect, and advocate of Cities for People. An engineer by trade, Silvia works together with her students to co-create roadmaps for better living environments and more resilient cities.
In Jack’s lab course, Medical Simulation Lab, students learn relevant anatomy and physiology through virtual reality (VR) alongside traditional approaches. The course focuses on specific diseases and follows the diagnosis and treatment pathway of a surgical patient from admission to discharge. Students learn how to perform a basic ultrasound evaluation and how to diagnose common CT pathologies. Through a surgeon’s eye, they also gain basic surgical skills and interventions to perform surgical procedures with the use of laparoscopic simulators.
Current climate changes require an innovative response to the way we build our urban environments. In Silvia’s Exploration Elective, Integrated Climate Change Planning, she encourages students to use their creative talent to solve problems and ponder solutions towards sustainable futures. Learning is highly experiential and takes place in Copenhagen as well as in Bordeaux, France. The close analysis of two complementary cities – one confronted with cloudburst, another threatened by excessive drought – offers a holistic approach to climate action and is an open invitation to abandon comfortable academic distinctions. 19

Elise Made a Documentary on Global Food Waste ELISE (she/her), Brown University, studied with DIS Copenhagen as a pathway to conduct research for her senior thesis documentary film entitled “The Global Food Waste Crisis and The Danish Solution.” Elise studied Sustainability at DIS Copenhagen, and as an environmental studies major, she had respected and admired Denmark for its sustainability efforts long before arriving. Another of Elise’s passions is filmmaking, and while in Copenhagen, she found an excellent way to combine the two. As part of her semester abroad, Elise gathered her own primary-source evidence on global food waste, and how people in Denmark are leading the effort to combat this global issue. After graduating, Elise moved to London to pursue a masters in TV/Film Producing at the MetFilm School, and is now working at Warner Bros as a Production Assistant.

It was DIS that taught me the value of diverse thinking and international collaboration.”

Mo Returned to Stockholm for Research MO (she/her), Duke University, studied European Security Dilemmas and Intelligence at DIS Stockholm. The experience of taking this course shaped her senior thesis research, for which she returned to Stockholm with the help of DIS Stockholm faculty member, Steve Turner, and her advisor back home at Duke University. For Mo’s thesis, she conducted interviews with counter-terrorism experts, police officers, social workers, teachers, and politicians in Stockholm. Upon her return to the U.S., Mo used her research data to contrast the security and immigration policies of the U.S. to those of Sweden and the EU in general.
“
My home school doesn’t offer that many programs that focus on international relations, so it was great to be here and actually have that focus on Stockholm, Sweden, and also on the EU. It really helped me decide that I do want to pursue a masters in international relations and continue learning more about these issues.”

While in Denmark, why not hop on your bike to check out a biodynamic farm, or perhaps visit Copenhill; a waste-to-energy plant with a ski slope on top of it? In Sweden, take a night train to the north and experience the magnificent natural phenomena of northern lights or the midnight sun. Taking in the changing landscapes through a train window is a wonderful and relaxing way to get to know your host country.

“
I hope more low-income and first-gen students will study abroad Studying abroad is something that, five years ago, I would have never thought to be possible. It feels kind of like a miracle that I have made it to this point in my life. I hope that over the years, more and more low-income and first-generation students will be able to study abroad and take part in what some consider to be one of the most important experiences of college.” -Lizzy (she/her), Swarthmore College
“
Research Tuition and Scholarships One of the biggest obstacles that people foresee to study abroad is how one will fund it. At the start of the planning process, it can seem daunting and even difficult to imagine. However, study abroad can be pretty feasible. Look into how your school deals with tuition and if your current scholarships are still eligible to be applied abroad. For me that was a great help.” -Rigel (she/her), University of Tulsa
