Hej, I’m Paulina
A year ago, when I opened this very catalog, studying abroad was still a distant dream for me. How would I afford to go? How could I maintain progress in my academics and career prospects at home? Having spent every summer since high school working full time, I couldn’t imagine leaving the safety of my routine to come study in Stockholm and Copenhagen. Thankfully, DIS supported me with several scholarships that made this summer possible, so I took the leap.
In my time here, DIS has expanded my sense of what is possible for myself. This is a program that feels optimistic and future oriented. There’s a distinguishing feature in the academics at DIS - you can expect to be challenged academically, but your confidence, skills, and motivations will grow limitlessly as a result of that challenge. Impactful Field Studies in my statistics course have brought me directly into Scandinavian university classrooms and given me a seat at the table with world-class instructors using innovative computing technologies. I’ve used real surveyed data from the Stockholm community to develop a project that will certainly add to my academic portfolio. These experiences have reinforced my passion for data science and have prompted me to consider returning to Stockholm for graduate school in a few years.
Many of you will be traveling alone for the first time - on another continent of all places - but you will quickly grow comfortable with these safe and easily-navigated cities. Soon, you will be hopping on ferries with new friends to visit islands near and far, or find yourself on a train, riding through the idyllic Swedish countryside during the most magical time of the year, when the sun hardly sets before rising again.
I highly encourage you to keep reading the next few pages. You will discover a range of courses that challenge what you think you’re capable of and will ultimately shape you into a confident and analytical student. You will meet friends who come from all over the world and are as motivated and curious as you. And most importantly, you will leave DIS with an unmatched independence and sense of personal growth. I know I am departing Scandinavia with a new sense of agency and new ideas for what I’m capable of achieving, and I hope you will do the same.

A Scandinavian Home
A Global Mindset
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN
DIS was founded with a core mission: to facilitate intercultural understanding, promote academic curiosity, and foster a global mindset in each student. So much has changed from 1959 to today, but even as the context around us shifts, our mission remains the same. A curious, nuanced, and international mindset is as important as ever in today’s complex and constantly evolving world.
We believe that a study abroad program should be truly rooted in the culture and values of the location in which you study. That’s why, as a Scandinavian institution, DIS is based only in Stockholm and Copenhagen, two cities where we have deep connections to the people and culture. Our students use these ties to immerse themselves within a new culture and build a home away from home.
Today, with over 60 years of practice in pursuing our mission, we’re more convinced than ever that this is the right approach – to be deeply connected to our corner of the world while exploring the issues that affect the entire globe.
We’re proud of our story, and we’re excited for you to join us and make your own.
Here’s what you can expect from DIS
Freedom of Choice
DIS offers over 95 courses across disciplines, making it easy for you to study abroad while keeping up with your academics, or allowing you to explore new topics during your time abroad.
Learn In and Out of the Classroom
Where you learn is as important as what you learn. That’s why your courses emphasize place-based learning through Field Studies which take you out of the classroom to see your academic topics in real life. Some courses also include faculty-led Study Tours to further contextualize your understanding of topics while in a relevant European destination.
You are planting yourself across national boundaries and taking on a commitment to think globally
Inclusive Community
Well-being Resources and 24/7 Support
Your well-being is top priority during your time abroad. At DIS, we have a Care Team of professional staff ready to support your physical and mental health and safety, with a 24-hour emergency phone so they can be contacted at any time.
We offer a variety of resources and ways to feel at home during your time with DIS. All students receive access to the Navigate App, where they can join groups, find out about events happening around town, and connect with one another. DIS also offers need-based and diversity scholarships to ensure students from all backgrounds can come and create their own spaces in Scandinavia.
Studying abroad is one of the first times in your life when you truly get to be independent. Your sense of self and your place in the world seems to shift beyond the limites you’ve previously known.

Pursue Your Academic Goals Abroad
Follow your passion and build a unique summer with DIS. Experience new ways of learning in small classes with highly skilled and engaged faculty. Use the city as your classroom and gain a greater understanding of the world.
A Scandinavian Approach
DIS courses draw from the Scandinavian academic model, prioritizing interactive learning. Most DIS faculty work as professionals in the areas they teach, bringing theory to life and engaging students through discussions, case studies, and group projects.
Place-based Learning
Bring class out of the classroom. Explore Stockholm and Copenhagen through an academic lens on Field Studies throughout the cities. Travel through Europe on a faculty-led Study Tour to experience your learnings first-hand and in a new context.
Develop Career Skills
Summer at DIS is an excellent way to boost your resumé. Academically rigorous classes offer opportunities to build on practical skills and strengthen cultural competencies. Hone your technical skills and experience a taste of daily life for a potential future career in one of our six-week sessions.
It’s easy to theorize about questions and create discussion in a classroom, but it’s much more fun to explore them first-hand.”

NORA, BARNARD COLLEGE
as Your Home Stockholm
Study in the Heart of Stockholm
DIS Stockholm is located in one of the city’s most beautiful neighborhoods, where we share a new and award-winning building with the Swedish Royal College of Music.
Island Hop Through the City
With 14 islands making up the city, each day brings a new adventure. Explore the bustling metropolis of central Stockholm. Meet friends for an afternoon fika at a quaint café in Gamla Stan. Pack a picnic and join other locals basking in the sun at your favorite overlook on the water.
History Meets Modernity
Stockholm is a city of new and old. You can venture to the city center and witness historical landmarks dating back to the 13th century, then easily find yourself in a hip nearby neighborhood like Södermalm, where historic architecture now houses some of the most well-known cafés, brands, and restaurants in Sweden.
Freedom to Roam
Grab a kayak or your hiking boots and enjoy the Swedish democratic concept that nature belongs to everyone. Kayak out to one of the 30,000 islands that stretch from the city into the Baltic Sea or head inland for a weekend hike in Sweden’s spectacular nature.
Time to Celebrate
Celebrated during the longest days of summer, midsommar is arguably the most important Swedish holiday of the year – and you are invited! You can also check out the many music festivals happening throughout the city, take a dive and join the Stockholm Swimming Festival, or treat your tastebuds at Taste of Stockholm.
Discover Lagom
The Swedes pride themselves on their sense of balance in life called lagom. This phrase applies across so many aspects of life – from the government prioritizing that both parents enjoy a generous leave with their children, to knowing just the right amount of guests to invite to a party to ensure a sense of coziness.
Study in the Heart of Copenhagen
Walk to class down cobblestone streets and past squares lined with cafés, castles, public gardens, and twisting spires dotting the skyline.
Build Your Network in an Innovative Capital
Copenhagen is the hub for politics, business, architecture, design, and research in Denmark — perfect for Field Studies that take you out of the classroom to meet local experts.
Explore the New Nordic Wave
Copenhagen is at the forefront of the New Nordic wave currently reinventing the aesthetics of urban design, architecture, and food. Dive into canals from the harbor baths, and commute to class on Copenhagen’s 400 km of bike lanes!
Discover Local Life
There’s always something happening during Danish summer! Look out for the design and architecture festivals, pop-ups and flea markets spread throughout neighborhoods, midsummer bonfires celebrating sankthansaften, or one of Denmark’s many summer music festivals… just to name a few.
Happiness and Hygge
Denmark is often rated the happiest nation in the world according to the UN’s World Happiness Report. Perhaps this is due to the Danish concept of hygge — sharing cozy moments with friends new and old.

How to Apply
We know that studying abroad is a big decision and we are here to guide you along every step of the way. DIS collaborates with over 200 partner institutions across the U.S. so that your application process is simple, and credits are easily transferred back to your home institution.
Talk to Your School
Your study abroad office and academic advisor can give you the information you need about application processes, deadlines, transfering credits, and tuition. They can also advise you on how to transfer your financial aid and talk through other scholarship opportunities.
Application Deadlines & Requirements
We encourage you to apply as early as possible as DIS often reaches capacity.
Be sure to meet with your university’s study abroad advisors as internal deadlines and processes vary by institution.
Academic requirements include:
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
+ Must have completed two semesters by time of participation
+ Good academic and disciplinary standing at a four-year college or university in the United States or Canada
One of the biggest obstacles that people foresee to study abroad is how one will fund it. At the start of the planning process, it can seem daunting and even difficult to imagine. However, study abroad can be pretty feasible. Look into how your school deals with tuition and if your current scholarships are still eligible to be applied abroad. For me that was a great help.”
