“Your sense of self and your place in the world seems to shift beyond the limits you’ve previously known.”

Hej, I’m Kat My study abroad journey began well before I stepped foot in Scandinavia. I had never left the country before and it was a constant back-and-forth deciding to pursue education abroad. For students like me who come from low-income backgrounds, study abroad is not typically an option. I was lucky enough to come to DIS as a recipient of the Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship. This has allowed me to focus equally on my leisure time and my education – something I am not often able to do back at home. Studying abroad is one of the first times in your life when you truly get to be independent. From your classes to your housing, you are among professors, advisors, and peers who are helping you grow confident in your new environment. Your sense of self and your place in the world seems to shift beyond the limits you’ve previously known. Culturally and geographically, you are planting yourself across national boundaries and taking on a commitment to think globally. You’ll have plenty of time to hit up all the tourist spots, eat all the pastries you’ve seen in local bakeries, and go explore with new friends. But my big piece of advice? Do not be afraid to do things by yourself. Take yourself out, read books on the harbor, take new walking routes, spend your evenings how you like. Get to know yourself and what you like to do because there’s no better time to do it than when you’re a student traveler.

Meet friends for an afternoon fika at a quaint café in Gamla Stan. Pack a picnic, and join other locals basking in the sun at your favorite overlook on the water.

History is Everywhere Stockholm’s city center dates back to the 13th century and historical landmarks are scattered throughout the city – going back as far as to the Viking Age.

Freedom to Roam Grab a kayak or your hiking boots and enjoy the Swedish democratic concept that nature belongs to everyone. Kayak out to one of the 30,000 islands that stretch from the city into the Baltic Sea or head inland for a weekend hike in Sweden’s spectacular nature.

Time to Celebrate Celebrated during the longest days of summer, midsommar is arguably the most important Swedish holiday of the year – and you are invited! Check out the many music festivals around the city, the Evening Wildlife Safari with wild moose spotting, the Color Obstacle Rush, and Stockholm Pride.

Discover Lagom The Swedes pride themselves on their sense of life balance called lagom. This phrase applies across so many aspects of life – from the government prioritizing that both parents enjoy a generous leave with their children, to knowing just the right amount of guests to invite to a party to ensure a sense of coziness.

My Summer Story New Perspectives on Sustainability SIMRAN (she/her), Northeastern University, took courses in sustainability and anthropology for Session 1 and Session 2.

24

“ There’s something profound that’s

only found here, among red roofs and sea air, among the unknown.”

My reason for going to Scandinavia could have been any endless number of alluring things, but my primary driver for studying here is actually sustainability. The DIS program is recommended by my university and I’ve seen sustainability in action here – in fact, it’s impossible to avoid. It’s a collective conscientiousness, a feeling of mutual responsibility and trust.

To me, going abroad feels like starting anew. You’re continuing to write the story of you, but in a different color pen. Because you’re in a city for weeks, not days. When your tourist bucket list is complete, you take the plunge (much like the Scandinavians, who love to jump into the harbor in the summer) into the everyday.

I admire the way DIS integrates the city into classes, and I can tell from first-hand experience that the combination is seamless. In my class, we’ve had three guest speakers and have taken field trips to visit local businesses.

My advice is to lean into the immersiveness of it all. There’s something profound that’s only found here, among red roofs and sea air, among the unknown. Let the city fill in the spaces in every direction around you. It’s daunting but lovely to let yourself be surrounded, to lose yourself in it.

“Studying abroad in Stockholm

and Copenhagen has opened my eyes to tons of new things.”

An Unforgettable Summer EVAN (he/him), Ohio State University, took courses in economics, environmental studies, and business for Session 1, Session 2, and Session 3. I believe that everybody who has the opportunity to study abroad should branch out of their comfort zone at home and consider giving it a try. Even though I was passionate about taking the opportunity to study abroad myself, I had no idea how much it would impact me as a person. Studying abroad in Stockholm and Copenhagen has opened my eyes to tons of new things. The faculty here have been amazing – knowing their subjects extremely well, connecting with students, giving great recommendations about the city, and listening to our class feedback. Besides the academics, there are also countless reasons outside of the classroom as to why I’ll never forget this summer. To name a few – the friendliness of locals in both cities, exploring the various islands of Stockholm and the bike lanes of Copenhagen with friends, jumping off the Kastrup sea bath platforms, and trying every Swedish meatball place I could find in Stockholm. All of these unforgettable experiences have given me a new perspective on life. You will get out of study abroad experience whatever you put in and I strongly encourage you to try all kinds of new things and do as much as you can in your time here because it will be over before you know it!

Research tuition and scholarships One of the biggest obstacles that people foresee to study abroad is how one will fund it. At the start of the planning process, it can seem daunting and even difficult to imagine. However, study abroad can be pretty feasible. Look into how your school deals with tuition and if your current scholarships are still eligible to be applied abroad. For me that was a great help.” -Rigel (she/her), University of Tulsa
