Benvenuto Bienvenida Bienvenue Welcome

Dear Students, Parents and Colleagues, I still vividly recall the first time I landed in a foreign country as a young person. My senses felt overloaded; everything was utterly different. And my world changed. The impact of study abroad on a young person’s life is immeasurable. Years later, while living in Italy with my family for 8 years and working in the field of international education, it was part of my job to know the college study opportunities available in Europe to English speaking students. I also learned to determine the truly exceptional schools, ones that would be an outstanding experience for any student. Back then my work was with secondary students, high school students living abroad and choosing a college soon. Once my family and I returned to the U.S. my interest in education abroad focused on options for college students and it was evident at that time that opportunities were limited and difficult to reach. As a result, in 1995, I began to build SAI, with the goal of making it possible for all students to experience study abroad, especially at these exceptional schools I’d come to know. • In 2015 SAI celebrates 20 years of service. SAI Programs’ hands-on approach has enabled us to serve our students with the finest study abroad programs in Europe. Our students understand that SAI is an organization known for providing programs and services of distinguishing quality and always with a personal touch. • As President, I am committed to maintaining SAI Programs as a small, personalized organization with staff who care for students and respond to their academic interests, cultural curiosities and career goals. As an intentionally small organization we are able to help each individual student feel comfortable in a new cultural environment. And as a small organization, we pay attention to the smallest details, allowing students the greatest access to learning and cultural exposure. • SAI Programs is dedicated to introducing students to opportunities that encourage creative interaction among disciplines: communication, science, technology, art and design, economics and social sciences. In this way we seek to help students develop both the breadth and depth of creative thinking, cultural knowledge and professional skills. So when they return from their experiences they have a deeper understanding of themselves and the world. We believe this will provide an advantage to them in their chosen careers and for the rest of their lives. 2015 marks the 20th anniversary of SAI. • I invite you to learn more about SAI Programs by visiting our web site: saiprograms.com. • Michael Cruciano, President

There are NO language requirements for most SAI programs; all courses are taught in English and some are also available in the host language. Students receive U.S. university credit for all courses SAI offers. Our programs are designed to allow students the opportunity to know their host city and country on a deep level; its history, culture, geography, food, art and people. • All courses are taught in English with some in the host language • Program cost includes accommodation in student-shared apartments and homestays are available • Students from any school, affiliated or non-affiliated, can attend SAI Programs • Students from any nation can attend SAI Programs

At SAI we are committed to exposing students to education abroad opportunities that encourage creative interaction across disciplines. This interaction of creativity and innovation is especially visible in cities noted for art, culture and design. SAI establishes programs in these dynamic “smart” cities that inspire personal creativity and success in students. This is part of the mission that guides SAI, as well as our decision that SAI will always remain small enough so the personal hands-on care that is primary to our mission, is nurtured and maintained in all SAI experiences. With programs in London, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Florence, Milan, Sorrento, Siena, and Arezzo, students will find nearly all areas of study; from business to design; art history to environmental studies; studio arts to political science and more. The combination of world-class academic course work with the cultural treasure of your host country brings personal growth and a lifetime of memories. Our vision is to provide superior academic, living, social and cultural experiences that allow students to enjoy their time abroad, while nurturing their talents and challenging their minds. Students will experience a blended educational and cultural environment that stresses academic integrity, high impact learning, leadership development and global awareness. The result is uniquely enhanced knowledge and skills for students preparing to enter the work world, graduate school, career advancement or professional development.

Today’s increasing globalization places new demands on students as decision-makers, and for this reason many undergraduate programs require study abroad. It is critical for today’s student to understand the interconnection of world affairs and to experience, through living abroad, cultural difference and diversity. Educational institutions must prepare today’s student to face a world made smaller by rapid communication, shared commerce and the facility of travel from one place to another. By discussing issues and making friends from around the world, students begin to see themselves and their homeland from a global perspective. Study abroad students undertake an unforgettable personal journey and SAI is there every step of the way to enhance the experience and encourage our students.

Advising and Orientation SAI stresses the importance of meeting with your academic advisor to discuss how to “save” or “bank” courses to take while abroad. Get to know your academic advisor and the advisors in the study abroad office so when questions arise, you know where to turn. SAI admissions counselors are knowledgeable about the programs, courses, cities and countries where host schools are located and have extensive experience in helping students transition from their home school to their choice of programs abroad. It is important to continue communication with your academic advisor on campus to help you in selecting the courses that will fulfill your degree requirements and may help you in your future career and graduate school paths. Study abroad is considered to be a life-changing experience. Both SAI admissions counselors and SAI staff abroad help to enhance this defining moment in your life. You can email, phone, establish communication through Facebook, Twitter or use SAI’s live chat website feature to get your questions answered. Upon arrival you will participate in an orientation program, intended to familiarize you with the local environment and learn some of the local customs to help make the stay in your new city successful. Host school and SAI program policies are thoroughly reviewed during orientation. Our Program Coordinators and Advisors hold daily office hours and are always available to offer assistance with personal issues that are common when studying abroad as well as academic problems that may arise. The SAI Student Services Program includes an active calendar of social events and excursions, culminating in a farewell dinner at the end of each term. On-site staff regularly organizes culinary, cultural, sports and musical events, often free to SAI students. SAI encourages students to participate in these activities as another way of getting the most from your experience.

SAIPROGRAMS Community and Cultural Integration As a result of our strong ties to the local communities, SAI offers a variety of high impact service activities that help students gain a meaningful global perspective while making a difference in their world. Such service learning, volunteer programs and community-based research projects work toward the overall goal of improving the quality of life for the local community. Community service enhances students’ academic, professional, and intercultural development. Students engaged in the community examine real-life problems and collaborate with local residents to address community needs. Students may work on a specific project or participate in community, cultural or government related programs for a designated time. Examples include working with local immigration officials, teaching English and computer skills, serving the elderly community, participating with local medical emergency teams, or providing services to youth. Often, students are transformed from the service experiences and discover a new sense of their own identities and their roles as global citizens. Students will explore their own cultural identity with respect to the local culture while giving back to their host communities. Not only do these programs and projects have advantages for the communities, but experts agree that these types of activities add an extra dimension to living and learning abroad, help to develop knowledge and skills for the global marketplace, and from a practical perspective, serve as boosters to resumes and graduate school applications. For many, being a volunteer abroad represents an opportunity they simply haven’t had time to realize back home, where they juggle work, school, and busy lives. As a volunteer, students have the opportunity to explore their own culture, ideas and expectations with respect to the local realities they will encounter. The relationships made as a result of these experiences can be life long and life changing for both students and locals alike. Most SAI programs offer volunteer opportunities and your SAI Advisor will guide you through the process of choosing a position that suits you.

SAIPROGRAMS Scholarships

Student Visas

Since our beginning SAI has provided roughly $2 million in financial assistance to students and is pleased to offer scholarships to deserving students each academic year, awarded based on merit and need. Scholarship details, eligibility requirements and application can be found on our website. Scholarships are only awarded to students enrolled in a program that includes SAI housing.

U.S. citizens studying in London for less than 6 months are not required to obtain a student visa. Students of any other nationality will receive SAI advising on obtaining their student visa through UK Immigration Services.

Students must be accepted in a program before applying for a scholarship. All students submitting scholarship applications are considered for all scholarships that apply to their enrollment selection and therefore do not specify a particular scholarship. An independent selection committee reviews applications that meet all criteria and requirements and awards are announced 2 weeks after the scholarship application deadline. For a complete list of available scholarships and tuition discounts visit the SAI website. SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION DEADLINES Fall Semester: June 1 Spring Semester: October 1 Summer Session: March 1

U.S. citizens studying in Italy, Spain, and France for more than 90 days will need a student visa. Students attending the Spain program can use the SAI visa processing service (optional, with fee). With this service SAI is able to process visas directly with the Spanish Consulate and students are not required to appear in person. For all other students SAI will provide helpful visa advising at no additional cost. Once accepted, a student will be given step-by-step easy to follow instructions on applying for a student visa. SAI will answer all visa questions and prepare you for your appointment at the Consulate. Additional information can be found on the SAI website, or by contacting our Visa Director at: visas@saiprograms.com

Financial Aid Students currently receiving financial aid through their home institution are usually permitted to use their aid to attend SAI programs by way of a Consortium Agreement. For more information on financial aid and Consortium Agreements visit our website or contact the SAI Business Office. All financial aid materials should be sent to the California office of SAI. Students using financial aid are required to pay the Application Fee, Confirmation Deposit, Security Deposit and Private Room Supplement (if applicable) when normally due. Written verification of a student’s financial aid award or loan approval must be sent to the SAI office in order to delay the balance of program fees until aid is disbursed, and before your application is considered complete. If your financial award is not sufficient to cover the full Program Cost, the difference must be paid by the regular final payment deadline.

Florence

FLORENCE The City The beauty and wealth of Florence has attracted every society, from Romans to our present world. Though Florence is an ancient city, the focal point today is the art and architecture, and the Renaissance that blossomed from 1400 – 1600. No other place in Europe reflects the birth and development of modern society more than Florence, through its exquisite examples of art and architecture. The Renaissance or “rebirth”, the revolutionary time that followed the Dark Ages of Europe, changed the world forever by placing importance on the individual and on creativity. The program’s location in the historic center of Florence offers students the opportunity to live in the heart of the Renaissance while experiencing the modern, thriving city of today. The streets of Florence still ring with the vibrant culture that began over 600 years ago; the center has changed little, combining the elegance and quality of Renaissance style with a stunning blend of modern design. It is an immensely fun city, filled with people from all parts of the world. The lush hills and mountains of Tuscany surround the city, offering themselves for exploration on afternoons or weekends. Though Florence has a rich history, today it is an important center for contemporary art, fashion design, graphics and business. We invite you to experience this contrast of past and present with other students from around the world that come to study in Florence.

Student Life

SAI recognizes that a well-rounded study abroad experience includes learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom. By providing a strong Student Services program, our staff aims to support students in their personal growth through daily cultural interactions both in Florence and beyond. At the beginning of each term, students participate in an orientation during which they are given general information, health and safety guidance, school policies, a profile of Italian culture, a guided walking tour of the city and school premises, an Italian language placement test and a final course registration. You will meet your advisors at orientation, and they will be available to assist you with any academic or personal issues that may arise throughout the term. SAI Advisors plan regular social events for students, ranging from restaurant dinners of regional cuisine to the wildly popular local soccer matches, and excursions included in the program introduce students to other fascinating locations in Italy. On weekends students have the opportunity to travel outside of Florence to neighboring Italian cities, while low-cost airline tickets make for easy trips to other European cities.

SAIITALY Student Clubs

• Sports Club: for sports enthusiasts or the solo athlete. • Connecting Cultures: Orientation program designed to enhance your cultural experience and awareness. • Family Club: An extension of Connecting Cultures gives students a more in depth, hands-on opportunity to get personally involved with an adoptive Florentine family. • Music and Cinema: Music and films lovers meet to discuss and share their passion with other students. • The FUA Newspaper: all creative students are encouraged to participate in this regular publication. • Movie nights: dedicated to exposing you to some of the most popular Italian classic films. • City Walks: allows student to witness the spectacular beauty of Florence and it’s surrounding areas from the hilltops.

Living in Florence and being part of the Italian community, all contributed to the comprehensiveness of the Apicius Wine Program. The fact that all the professors have active careers in the wine industry enabled us to have exclusive access to wineries, tours, and tastings which was simply priceless – this is hard to find anywhere else and seems especially unique to the program. SAIITALY

Rome

ROME The City It has been said that more than a lifetime is needed to experience all that the city of Rome has to offer. It is a city layered with art and antiquities encompassing 2,500 years of history — from the Coliseum, the Imperial Forum and the Roman Pantheon, to Vatican City, with the Sistine Chapel and Vatican museum. The city of Rome is home to over five million people and is a global center of business, diplomacy, religion, film, art, and fashion. Since its legendary founding in 753 BC Rome is one of the oldest continuously occupied cities in Europe and perhaps this is why it is often referred to as the “Eternal City”. It is regarded as a birthplace of Western civilization and wears its history for all to see, with its historic center listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Though quite large, the city is a collection of distinctly different neighborhoods, each with unique characteristics. The Trastevere section of Rome, where the campus of John Cabot University is located, is one of the city’s oldest, casual yet lively, with art in abundance and excellent outdoor restaurants enjoyed by both Romans and visitors. The second SAI program in Rome, Italiaidea Institute, is located immediately across the river Tiber, just steps from Trastevere. You will discover that Rome is an open-air theater, which never ceases to amaze. It is an incredible city which enchants all with its great panoramas, piazzas, buildings, churches, ruins and museums; a great world capital which continues to maintain an authentic and traditional atmosphere in the peace of its small streets and its splendid piazzas bursting with people and life. “Rome is the great mother”, Fellini said, “who accepts all and where all find what they are looking for: art, cuisine, religion, cinema, nightlife or the peace of a boat-trip on the river, the boutiques of the major Italian designers or the small artisan workshops”.

Student Life All SAI students participate in an orientation program that includes information on the school and its policies, the city of Rome, and what to expect while living abroad. By the end of orientation, students will have a good understanding of how to find their classes, buy supplies and groceries, and move about independently in the city. Students have many opportunities to adventure beyond the city of Rome. You may join the regular excursions organized by SAI, or you may choose to travel on your own. An efficient rail system allows easy access to places of interest and many low cost airlines offer convenient travel to other European cities.

SAIITALY gyms are located in Trastevere, within easy walking distance of the campus. SAI students are able to join many of the Student Clubs on campus, from student government to the newspaper and more. As a student living in Rome you will get to know your neighborhood well, both where you live and where you study.

Volunteering Both SAI and the Student Services department at JCU offer students the opportunity to participate in the local Roman community through a socially relevant volunteer experience. Opportunities include the Caritas Soup Kitchen, Caritas Hostel for homeless men, and Italy Reads, a cultural and language exchange project in local high schools. Your Rome SAI Advisor will present interested students with a wide variety of ways to be of service to the community.

Internships John Cabot University’s unique relationship with leading multinational corporations, embassies, media and international organizations gives SAI students the opportunity to participate in exclusive internship programs. Former students have interned at the U.S. Embassy, Price Waterhouse Coopers Advisory, FAO, IDLO, IFAD, NATO, World Food Program, CNN, Vatican Radio, Sotheby’s Italy and many other companies. In order to participate in the internship program students must be of junior or senior standing at university and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Interested students should contact SAI Admissions to discuss internship opportunities in Rome. Knowledge of the Italian language is helpful, but not required. Students interested in an internship for credit should contact us at least a semester in advance, giving ample time to develop possibilities. Non-credit internships are also available.

Work Study There are several Work Study opportunities available to visiting students each semester in Student Services, Admissions and Housing offices at JCU. Interested students should contact SAI Admissions for more information. Students must meet the following criteria: • • • • •

Minimum GPA of 2.5 Some competency in the chosen area of work Letter of recommendation from their home Study Abroad Office Cover letter Resume

JCUROME Host School Considered one of the top American Universities outside of the U.S., John Cabot University (JCU) has provided an exceptional academic and cultural opportunity for students since 1972; the chance to obtain an American university education in the heart of Rome. JCU students encounter a rigorous liberal arts curriculum amidst centuries of art and architecture, in the center of one of the world’s great modern cities. With a diverse and international student body, students make friends from around the world.

John Cabot University

JCU maintains two campuses in Rome, each with its own personality and only a 5-minute walk apart. All classes at JCU are taught in English and there is no Italian language requirement. As you walk through the Porta Settimiana (built in the third century) you find JCU’s Frank J. Guarini Campus. Located on the grounds of the Accademia dei Lincei, the National Science Academy where Galileo was a member, this historic building takes full advantage of Rome’s mild climate, opening onto patios, terraces and a spacious “Lemon Tree” courtyard surrounded by bougainvillea. Students regularly congregate in these open spaces and terraces to study and socialize. In addition to classrooms, the Guarini Campus houses the Aula Magna Regina auditorium, which hosts lectures, concerts, plays and films, the Frohring Library, with its study rooms, multimedia lab and media room, as well as JCU administrative offices. JCU’s Tiber Campus, located on the banks of Rome’s famous Tiber river and a short walk from Guarini, is a spacious, state-ofthe-art building with smart classrooms, a student lounge and JCU offices such as Student Services and Counseling. Designed by the Italian modernist architect Angelo di Castro in 1958, it was completely renovated to accommodate 21st-century learning styles and technologies, while maintaining the architectural integrity of this former elementary school. Students can access wireless internet at both campuses.

SAIITALY Global Leadership Certificate The semester Global Leadership Certificate offered at our Rome program is designed to enrich each student’s experiences while studying abroad and to acknowledge their academic and service work by providing an additional credential beyond the university transcript. The city of Rome offers students unique opportunities to link classroom learning to real world experiences, while living and studying in a dynamic international capital city. The Global Leadership Certificate is based on the premise that students engaged in their own communities and abroad have increased opportunities to develop leadership skills that contribute to academic and career success. While in Rome, students learn leadership strategies that can be applied in local and global contexts. Students broaden their awareness of global issues and deepen their knowledge of the host community’s role in an increasingly interconnected world through exploration of research, engagement in community services and interaction with experts and leaders. Mentoring and structured reflection are integrated into the Certificate Program. SAI coordinators in Rome serve as mentors and meet regularly with students to discuss their progress and perspectives on their individual and group experiences. The Global Leadership Certificate enhances leadership skills by helping students to understand themselves in relationship to the world community. Both the academic and service components enable students to identify economic, political and cultural forces that shape the global market and influence global leadership. When applying to the SAI program at JCU, students must indicate on their application the Global Leadership Certificate in their Rome program option. Students then work with the SAI Admissions Counselor to select at least one designated global leadership course that helps develop knowledge and skills related to an aspect of global awareness such as cultural values and practices, global systems and their interconnectedness, humanitarian issues, environmental concerns and international relations. Additional information on the Global Leadership Certificate can be found on our website.

My semester in Rome was so wonderful it is hard to know where to start. I got to enjoy Italy and do some traveling but most importantly I made myself a home in Rome. The most important part of my experience was the relationships I formed. My heart will forever be in Italy and I may move there after graduation...Anyone would be lucky to have the opportunity to study abroad and I hope that whoever does treasures each moment they are there. ~ Student, John Cabot University

The Honors Program is based on the premise that students go above and beyond the classroom. Students enroll as full time students at SAI’s JCU program that includes at least one JCU honors course. Honors courses are designated as such because students complete additional assignments (e.g., research papers or portfolios, attendance at interdisciplinary honors lectures), and delve more deeply into the subject. These additional assignments are graded on a “grant of Honors credit/no grant of Honors credit” basis and are not calculated into the final grade for the course. For the granting of Honors credit, JCU requires that students produce work of a quality that would receive a B (3.00/4.00) or higher and this will be noted on their transcripts. Students taking an Honors Course also enjoy additional mentoring from their JCU instructor. In addition to the JCU honors course, students work with the SAI honors coordinator and participate in activities arranged by SAI, such as community service and scholarly seminars. During application students work with SAI Admissions Counselors to select appropriate courses. Mentoring and structured reflection are integrated into the honors program prior to departure and while in Rome, where the SAI honors coordinator meets regularly with students to discuss their projects and activities.

Siena

SIENA

SAIITALY

The City

Internships

Nestled in rolling hills in the heart of Tuscany, just 70 miles south of Florence, Siena was first settled during Etruscan times and during the time of Emperor Augustus, a Roman town was founded on the site of Siena. As an important money-lending center, Siena prospered as a city-state. With its narrow winding roads and medieval architecture, Siena appears all but untouched by modern times. One can wander through tucked-away squares and tour museums and churches that are home to countless renowned works of Byzantine, Renaissance and High Renaissance art.

There are several internship placements available for interested students. These unpaid internships allow students to observe and participate in the day-to-day activities of several local businesses and organizations. Internship students will participate in weekly on-site activities, as well as complete related coursework during the semester and a final reflective paper about a relevant aspect of the internship experience. Internships can be taken as noncredit or for-credit. Some internship placements require students to take a ‘Business and Legislative Italian’ course in order to receive internship credit (3 credits per term/internship).

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is a major attraction and is also a bustling university town, with one of the oldest in Europe, the University of Siena founded in 1240. The city offers exciting sporting and cultural events year round, including one of the top basketball teams in Europe, as well as the AC Siena soccer team, many theatrical events, a series of concerts sponsored by the famous Chigiana Musical Academy and the Siena Jazz Summer Festival. Siena is perhaps most famous for the heart stopping horse race, Il Palio. This spectacular event takes place twice each summer in the central square of the city and has roots that can be traced back centuries. The exhilarating bareback race pits each of the city’s 17 neighborhoods, or contrade, against one another and is not to be missed – the victorious neighborhood celebrates for an entire year!

Student Life All Siena Italian Studies (SIS) students are housed in family board accommodations, encouraging use of your new language skills and deepening your interaction with Italian families and culture. In many courses, learning is not limited to the classroom. Whenever possible, Siena Italian Studies integrates field excursions and visits to enhance comprehension and provide students with a multifaceted experience. For example, art history courses naturally include visits to museums, churches and sites of artistic relevance in Siena, Florence and other towns in the region so that students can see first-hand the masterpieces discussed in class. Cultural Anthropology students may attend traditional local festivals and visit museums dedicated to aspects of Tuscan folk culture; students studying Italian Costume will have the opportunity to visit museums dedicated to textiles, costumes and individual Italian designers in the Florence/Prato area, while students studying the History of Italian Cuisine might visit a local cheese making farm and attend a hands-on cooking lesson, and the list goes on. The historic center of Siena is magical, with narrow streets and fascinating shops. Students find it easily manageable while at the same time it is not difficult to walk from town out to the countryside, with villages and vineyards. This area of Tuscany is hilly and those students that enjoy hiking will find it endlessly interesting.

Volunteering Participants in all SIS programs are encouraged to perform service in the community through their partner, Ulisse Cultural Association. This service can range from 1-5 hours a week and opportunities exist at a variety of different service sites. Students might set tables at the city soup kitchen, visit with the elderly at a nursing home, teach English to local elementary school children or volunteer on the city ambulance. Volunteering in the community is an unparalleled way to improve language skills, get involved in the local social fabric and make a genuine contribution to the host community.

Events and Excursions For activities during a specific term see our website. Semester programs include a 4-day group excursion to a chosen location. Several half-day and full-day excursions give students a wide-ranging and meaningful experience of Tuscany and other regions of Italy. A walk through the Tuscan countryside from one unspoiled small town to the next, passing along ancient Roman byways and through woods where locals hunt for mushrooms and gather herbs; visit farms that produce wine, olive oil and pecorino cheese; relax in one of the region’s many natural hot springs; experience traditional Tuscan festivals such as Carnevale in Foiano della Chiana. Each term includes a visit to Florence and the Uffizi Gallery as well as an Italian Opera in Florence or Rome. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

SISSIENA Host School Siena Italian Studies (SIS) is a study abroad program based at the International Center for Intercultural Exchange in Siena, Italy. SIS programs are a ‘gentle full-immersion’ in Italian life for highly motivated beginners, intermediate and advanced Italian language students. SIS offers some of the most innovative programs in Italy that work to fully integrate the education of language, culture and service learning, in and out of the classroom. Classes are taught using an instructional approach developed over the years, known as FICCS (Full-Immersion: Culture, Content, and Service). Using this approach, which combines guided and spontaneous learning acquisition, students are asked to employ new language skills both in the classroom and in service situations, giving them a learning experience like no other. SIS programs are intended for students with a wide range of motivations for studying abroad. From acquiring a mastery of the Italian language, to using a local Renaissance chapel as your art history classroom, or working alongside the city’s volunteer medical assistance team, Siena Italian Studies provides you with the means to create an unforgettable experience abroad.

Siena Italian Studies

Academic Programs Language and culture make up an inseparable binomial; who can really say whether it’s culture that generates language or language that generates culture? This is the basis of Siena Italian Studies’ version of Full Immersion: Culture, Content and Service (FICCS). Full immersion at SIS is a gradual and unforced process of discovering a new culture through continuous and constant exchanges with locals. The overall objective of full-immersion at SIS is for each student to develop a reflective intercultural competence, which will allow him or her to function as a global citizen, capable of facing and interacting with different cultures throughout life. SAI students attending the program at SIS receive U.S. credits from Portland State University.

SAIITALY SEMESTER PROGRAMS Semester students are enrolled in a three-week Intensive Italian Language course (3 credits) at the start of the program. Following the Intensive Italian Language course, the group takes a break with a 4-day excursion to a selected destination and upon return the standard semester begins. Students take one Italian Language course (6 credits) along with 2-3 electives from the course offerings, for a total of 15-18 credits. Final course selections will be made following the course introduction sessions given at the start of the term. Electives are taught in varying levels of Italian. SUMMER PROGRAMS Summer students take a combination of Italian Language and elective courses. Programs range from four to eight weeks, for a total of 6 to 12 U.S. credits. Arezzo

AREZZO The City Located in southeastern Tuscany, Arezzo is a hilltop town at the crossroads of four valleys: Val Tiberina, Casentino, Valdarno and Valdichiana. In the upper section of town are the cathedral, town hall and the Medici Fortress (Fortezza Medicea), from which the main streets branch off towards the lower part. The upper part still maintains some its medieval appearance. Arezzo has plenty of monuments, churches and museums that offer visitors a chance to step back into history. One of the main highlights in Arezzo’s history is its importance as an Etruscan city, the ruins of which can be seen in structures around town. The most prominent Etruscan pieces of art are two bronzes, the Chimera of Arezzo (5th century BC) and Minerva (4th century BC), both currently kept in Florence. Etruscans were also notable for their work with gold, a tradition that has kept with Arezzo, which today is one of the major centers for jewelry and goldsmith craftsmanship in Italy. Today, Arezzo is home to about 100,000 Aretini (residents of Arezzo) and its main tourist draw is the Giostra del Saracino, an extraordinary joust that originated as military training and now draws large crowds cheering for the teams that represent the quadrants of the city. Arezzo is also known for its shopping, from its large antique fair to the daily passeggiata (stroll) up and down the Corso Italia to peruse the variety of interesting shops, cafes and restaurants.

Student Life Arezzo, originally an Etruscan site, has a fascinating history and its citizens are proud of their history and of their city. Today Arezzo is a mid-sized Tuscan hilltop city, offering more than most other hill towns. Because it is an important center for the Italian gold industry and much of the world’s gold chain is created here, Arezzo is considered a wealthy city. For that reason you will find an especially wide array of shops, restaurants and activities to keep you busy. Accademia dell’Arte’s (ADA) location in a large villa surrounded by vineyards just outside of the ancient city walls is still only a 20-minute walk from the center of town. Navigating Arezzo is easy and one can walk across town in 30 minutes. The value of studying in a city like Arezzo is that you will end your term abroad feeling as though you know the town well, its character and even many of the shopkeepers, making it an experience that affects you on a personal level.

SAIITALY Italians are renowned for being a warm and welcoming people. You’ll find that the majority of Aretini, especially shopkeepers and restaurant workers, have some English language ability and it is not hard to navigate the city with limited Italian language skills. While they may not expect visitors to speak Italian, locals will warm up to you quickly if you try to engage them using the little Italian you know. If you aren’t shy about fumbling your way through a few phrases in Italian they will be eager to help you hone your skills. Greetings, even when meeting someone for the first time, are warm and friendly. The Antique Fair of Arezzo is a major event held the first weekend of every month. With its 500 exhibitors and about 100 little shops open all year round, it is, since 1968, an added incentive to visit this art-laden city. The Antique Fair takes advantage of the extraordinary scenery of Piazza San Francesco, Piazza Grande and the Logge del Vasari, but the stalls spread over the side alleys, streets and squares across the historic center, transforming the character of the city for those two days each month. We encourage you to travel on your free weekends and during the mid-term break. Staying local to get to know your host city is a meaningful aspect to studying abroad. Be sure to spend at least a weekend or two in Arezzo, especially during the Antique fair (first week-end of the month) so you see the sights and get to know your home away from home. We guarantee that you will enjoy exploring your host city on foot, and it is easy to lose hours simply walking the cobblestoned streets and watching local life as it unfolds around you. The Office of Student Life is happy to provide suggestions for exploration of the country’s rich cultural, historical and artistic treasures and to help you make your travel arrangements.

Events and Excursions For activities during a specific term see our website. All semester students participate in a three day excursion led by ADA. The excursion—including travel, hotel and meals—is included in the Program Cost. Three Days and Two Nights In Milan, Italy Milan is an exciting, sophisticated city, with art and design everywhere. While it is the hub of business for Italy, it is also a cosmopolitan city, drawing people from around the world to its high fashion, arts and culture. Each semester, ADA students travel together by train from Arezzo to Milan to experience the thriving and historic theater scene. The group stays together in a comfortable hostel centrally located in downtown Milan. The trip is centered on three unique activities: a guided tour/workshop to experience the stunning Teatro alla Scala, a visit to the Piccolo Teatro, and a theater show. The remaining time is spent exploring everything the city has to offer.

For nearly ten years, ADA has offered innovative approaches to performing arts training, while giving students and performers the opportunity to develop their own creative voices. With courses taught in English, a foundation in the U.S. academic system, and strong roots in Italian performing arts, ADA offers a well-rounded and rigorous education. The school’s location is stunning; just a 20 minute walk to the center of town but surrounded by vineyards, an ancient aqueduct and villas from the Renaissance onward. ADA is housed in the exquisite “Villa Godiola”, where students learn, stay and eat together. With a maximum of 50 students per semester, ADA fosters a strong sense of camaraderie within the student body and participants are invited to embark on an intensive creative journey together. Student Life

Milan is the main industrial, commercial, and financial center of Italy and a leading global powerhouse. The city is synonymous with cutting-edge fashion, and is also internationally renowned as a center for interior, industrial, graphic and product design. Filled with the world’s premier fashion and design studios, the city provides students with an outstanding opportunity to explore the present and future of design in Milan’s international environment. Studying in a city that hosts some of the world’s top design and fashion shows will allow students direct exposure to working design professionals who are producing some of the finest and most cutting-edge work in their respective fields. In addition to exploring Italy’s rich design heritage, students will be challenged to develop their own creative voices and to explore new ideas, approaches and methods. Milan city proper has a population of 1.3 million, however the city has spread to include wide suburban areas surrounding it, bringing the total to 5.2 million people.

Students studying in Milan enjoy daily life in a dynamic, modern, international city. Milan has many hidden gems: apart from the discount designer outlet stores, you’ll have time to discover the Italian dolce vita (sweet life) in the many outdoor cafés around the city. The majority of students who study abroad say that one of the most valuable aspects of living in a European city is the opportunity to travel to other European cities. Milan’s geographical location allows easy access not only to all major Italian cities, but also to major European centers; the Swiss border is less than an hour away. Students can ski in the Alps in the winter months and enjoy Lake Garda, Como, and other famously beautiful Italian lakes in warmer times. Since Milan is a large city, students will find themselves using public transit (metro and buses) to get around, including getting from their apartment to school. But the systems work well and in no time you will find yourself using it like a local. Nightlife is abundant in Milan, not just with the thousands of restaurants and cafes but also clubs, shows and performances. SAI apartments are comfortable and students find themselves quickly making life an interesting routine in Milan, enjoying all the city has to offer.

At the same time Milan is also a business powerhouse of Europe. As SAI does in all cities where we have established programs, in Milan we offer program and course work in both Design and Liberal Arts. At Cattolica University in Milan, one of Europe’s top universities, SAI students can focus on business, political science, humanities and most other academic areas. The city is an important location for multinational corporations and banking interests and the pulse of European business and politics can be felt in Milan. It is a cutting edge city for both design and international business practices.

Milan is also well known for several international events and fairs, including Milan Fashion Week and the Furniture Fair, the largest of its kind in the world. Summer Dual City Program: London / Milan SAI offers a London/Milan Dual City Program each summer. This unique collaboration between Central Saint Martins (University of the Arts London) and Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (NABA) enables students to study at the very best design schools, in two of Europe’s most inspiring cities, taking complementary courses in the fields of Fashion Design and Styling. The course lasts for two weeks in London, followed by two days in Paris (covered in Program Cost) and continues on to Milan, where students take the second course (for a total of 6 credits). Students travel together from London to Paris by train and are met by the SAI Advisor and taken to their hotel. After a leisurely meal, SAI provides each student with a packet of information on Paris, including any special events happening those days, allowing them to spend their time on self-guided tours of the city. From Paris, students continue on to Milan by their own means of travel, arranged prior to arrival in Europe.

Being at NABA was the greatest experience I could have ever asked for. It revived and increased my love for the fashion industry and my desire to learn about the fashion industry. ~ Summer student

NABAMILAN Master’s Programs SAI offers Master’s programs at NABA conducted in English and accredited by the Italian Ministry of Education. Students completing the program are granted a Master’s Degree. Interested applicants should contact our California office for more details or visit our website. ONE YEAR MASTER’S PROGRAM Master’s in Creative Advertising The Master in Creative Advertising is a joint initiative between Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano and Media Design School, New Zealand. The program starts with an introduction to the basics of creative advertising, from terminology to best practices. Students develop core skills in copy writing, story telling and art direction, to create advertising campaigns across different types of media. Leading companies challenge the students with workshop briefs designed to give them a working knowledge of advertising context. This program includes a professional internship.

TWO-YEAR MASTER’S PROGRAMS Master’s of Art in Fashion and Textile Design The program addresses young designers that adopt and recognize in fashion a language able to visually embrace the essence of the contemporary world (music, visual arts, humanistic culture, technical/scientific culture, craft and industrial technologies, experimentation and tradition): fashion is their language. The program runs as a sort of permanent lab, where students play a central role. Experienced professionals and leading figures in the field of fashion and creativity mentor the students in building their own skills to achieve a personal and professional identity. Master’s of Art in Interior Design During an intensive two-year exploration of interior spaces, in the especially stimulating creative environment that the city of Milan on the eve of World Expo 2015 represents, students learn to conjugate in the future tense – as small but possible utopias – the verbs to dwell, to display, to exhibit, to sell: how we will live, how we will work, how we will communicate through interior spaces. Master’s of Art in Product Design Students learn new methodologies and techniques while working with mentors in NABA’s atelier, where students study different methodologies and apply countless techniques; reading and understanding time, space, and the world around us; learning to design today to be able to redesign the future.

SAIITALY Host School Founded in 1982, Domus Academy (DA) is considered one of Europe’s top design schools, offering twelve Master’s level programs during the year. Recent industry publications proclaim DA as one of the world’s top three design schools. DA is a member of CUMULUS, an association of European design schools. Winner of the Compasso d’Oro, Italy’s most sought after design award, and with a distinguished list of past lecturers such as Ettore Sottsass, Philippe Starck, Gianfranco Ferré, Neil Barrett, and Ron Arad, DA has always been a true pioneer of “Made in Italy”. Instruction at DA is not simply teaching how to design products, but also to consider design as a complex, challenging activity, which directs the form and the meaning of industrial production, basing aesthetic and social visions with cultural consciousness. DA gives its students the opportunity to meet and work with a wide network of design and fashion companies.

Master’s Programs Twelve One-Year Master’s Programs, all taught in English are offered. Visit the website or contact our California office for more details.

DAMILAN ACCESSORIES DESIGN This MA focuses on everything concerning people and clothing; leather goods and jewels often become creations as important as the dress that they complement. In collaboration with Ars Sutoria, the most prestigious institute of technical specialization in leather goods, participants will explore the accessories field with an innovative approach, in order to acquire an all-around and advanced knowledge of the industry. BUSINESS DESIGN This program intends to create a new managerial class for design driven companies composed of individuals able to combine creativity, managerial skills and entrepreneurial spirit. Its goal is to provide tools to tackle complex social conditions, globalization and the spread of new economic production systems.

FASHION MANAGEMENT This Master’s program aims at shaping and developing the next generation of managers suited to the specific requirements of Fashion while exploring different profiles in Fashion: from product to brand, distribution and communication. FASHION STYLING AND VISUAL MERCHANDISING Visual communication plays a key role in the success of companies and this program aims at providing participants with the tools and competencies for the new profession of the Visual Fashion Brand Communicator. This strategic person should be able to create, through photographic shots, the “fashion message” making the products appealing and so giving an added value to the creativity of designers; the aesthetic coordinator of the point of sale, where the brand values are highlighted by researching the most effective way to reach the reference target market.

CAR AND TRANSPORTATION DESIGN This MA follows the approach of “learning by designing”, where participants learn by direct, active involvement in several design experiences. The program aims at strengthening participants’ design competencies together with the development of their professional profile. At the end of the program, students will be ready to work as car designers, within the framework of a company or a design studio, and to effectively interact with the marketing, production and finance functions. FASHION DESIGN The Fashion Design program is developed according to the evolution of a system increasingly searching for professionals who possess interdisciplinary skills, creativity and the ability to manage a project from production, through communication and up to distribution. This is a training program designed to contribute to the development of professional figures able to successfully express their creative sensibility and properly face the new challenges coming into the Fashion World.

Domus is different because it simulates a professional working environment. The students become the creative, marketing or management team; trying to figure out solutions for real-world problems, and obtaining skills they can apply in the working world at the same time. Because of their hands-on approach to learning, I was able to collaborate with significant companies and individuals that I never would have had the chance to interact with otherwise. ~ Student, DA Business Design Graduate 56

SAIITALY INTERACTION DESIGN This Master’s program provides students and designers with practical and conceptual skills to carry out a “problem setting” activity, using their imagination to develop concepts, scenarios and strategies based on the integration of ICT in everyday life, blending design and creative sensitivity with more technical and market-oriented competence. INTERIOR AND LIVING DESIGN This program enables students to upgrade their design competencies combining new needs of sustainability with functional aspects of contemporary lifestyle. It is a training program of excellence, able to reflect on the changes and transformations of the built space, promoting a permanent research activity for design models and solutions that are appropriate and innovative. LUXURY BRAND MANAGEMENT Luxury professionals require a deep knowledge of the contemporary world and of the complexity of the luxury market. They are also requested to have the flexibility to adapt their skills in a constantly changing scenario and in several different fields. The program is designed to give students a leading edge in the highly competitive fields of High Fashion, Jewelry, Luxury Beverages and Spirits, Luxury Hotels and SPAs, Automotive (Cars and Yachts), Cosmetics and Perfumes, etc. combining marketing and business management skills. PRODUCT DESIGN DA’s historical flagship Master’s program has given birth to more than a generation of designers. The program aims to develop professionals with specific skills, willing to play an active role while proposing new intuition, aesthetic vision and cultural values. This program is offered in collaboration with Canon, Casio, Dainese, Honda, Ikea, Louis Vitton, Mandarina Duck, Mitsubishi Electronics, Nokia, and Samsung.

URBAN VISION AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN The objective of this degree is to enable professionals to reflect on public space metamorphosis within contemporary urban context. Students learn to re-design spaces, manage complex architectural and territorial issues using innovative analysis tools and design methods with particular focus on planning, landscape design, environmental sustainability and renewable energy. VISUAL BRAND DESIGN The concept of branding is moving away from the traditional idea of creating an “image” to represent the name and the values of a company, by exploring a broader view that incorporates several disciplines, from visual design to sound design, from storytelling to consumers’ psychology and marketing techniques, thus addressing a strongly integrated approach whose aim is to identify the core assets and to orchestrate them into a consistent brand identity.

SAISPAIN

barcelona

BARCELONA The City Barcelona has always been a magnet city in Europe and the Mediterranean. Being open to the world, dynamic and cosmopolitan, it is also a modern city that preserves its important cultural heritage. Visitors become first hand observers of the architectural and cultural remains of the historical moments of the city during its 2000 years of history. Students can enjoy the Roman vestiges, the Medieval quarters, and the urban legacy of development and growth that the city went through in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Olympic Games, held in 1992, resulted in dramatic modernization that attracts hundred of thousands of visitors every year, making Barcelona one of the most popular destinations in Europe. When we talk about Barcelona, we must talk about Antoni Gaudí, Joan Miró, Picasso and Mies Van der Rohe among others. All of them left a great cultural heritage in the city. La Pedrera, la Sagrada Familia and the Park Guell are a few examples of the fantastic Catalan Modernism that brought international fame to its most important figure, Antoni Gaudí. Barcelona enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate with pleasant temperatures in winter and warm summers. Less than 2 hours away are the Pyrenees Mountains, well known for spectacular landscapes and an array of summer and winter activities. Highspeed trains link Barcelona to most of the major European cities and the city’s airport offers many low cost airlines that can quickly transport you around the continent.

Student Life Students studying abroad in Barcelona are submerged in the unique blend of Mediterranean beach lifestyle and European urban culture that defines the city. Known for its flavorful Mediterranean cuisine, lively nightlife, distinctive architectural and artistic highlights, and welcoming residents, Barcelona awakens the senses and leaves students nothing short of inspired. As the capital of Catalonia, Barcelona also offers students a unique opportunity to experience both Spanish and Catalan language, and understand the cultural dynamics of the two identities.

SAISPAIN In the same day, students can explore the small winding streets of Barcelona’s Gothic quarter, attend an FC Barcelona soccer game to watch one of the world’s most beloved teams, and lounge on the sunny beaches. Barcelona’s manageable size allows students to explore it with ease and become comfortable getting around via the approachable public transportation system. SAI students studying in Barcelona quickly adapt to rich lunches, evening tapas, and late night meals. The heart of Barcelona is in the outdoor spaces, with residents pouring out onto outdoor patios, large plazas, and the renowned Las Ramblas—the long pedestrian walkway connecting central Barcelona with the Sea. SAI students begin their term with an in-depth orientation to the city, which includes an introduction to the Spanish and Catalan cultures, the public transportation system, and safety and security. SAI staff keep close contact with students throughout their term, regularly convening the SAI group for activities throughout the city.

Volunteering SAI Barcelona students have the opportunity to engage in a number of community and volunteer activities during their term abroad. Recognizing the value in students feeling a part of the community they live in, SAI develops diverse opportunities such as volunteering in a classroom, teaching basic English phrases and leading crafts.

SAIFRANCE

Paris

PARIS

SAIFRANCE

The City

Volunteering

Paris has always attracted visitors from around the world and continues to be one of western culture’s most treasured cities. For study abroad students it is enchanting and rich with art and culture. Situated on the banks of the Seine River, the Paris metropolitan area is one of the largest in Europe, with about 11.5 million people, while its city center is largely unchanged since 1860.

SAI actively seeks ways for students to meaningfully engage with their host communities, believing that such activities can significantly improve students’ experiences abroad. Students in Paris have ample opportunities for community integration through volunteering. SAI Paris host schools offer an array of activities, including educational outreach, refugee assistance, food service and English language services. SAI can also help students to identify opportunities that meet their specific interests.

Paris is known for its neo-classical architecture and is home to some of the finest museums, art galleries and historical monuments, not to mention its exquisite cuisine, on earth. Today Paris is a leading political, business and cultural center, and its influence in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world’s major global cities. As a leader in these contemporary disciplines, Paris is an exhilarating place to study abroad.

Student Life Paris is a city for students to discover, with lively streets, stunning architecture, historical and contemporary art, fashion, and delectable food around every corner. SAI students living in Paris become a part of the international patchwork of citizens who make it their home. Students can spend their lunch breaks overlooking the bustle of the Eiffel Tower, exploring the Orsay Museum, or perusing the boutique markets of Montmartre. Thanks to an impressive public transportation system, all of Paris and its outskirts are extremely accessible, granting students great independence and ample opportunities to explore. Furthermore, Paris’ central location in Europe allows students to take weekend trips throughout the region with great ease. SAI students begin their terms with a thorough introduction to Paris. This includes city orientation, introduction to the public transportation system, safety precautions, and cultural norms. Additionally, students are introduced to food shopping customs, the nuances of Parisian apartment living, basic survival French language, and academic expectations. SAI staff is available to students throughout their term, and regularly brings SAI students together for activities around the city and excursions out of the city. SAI is committed to helping students pursue their extracurricular interests, whether it is sports, volunteering, cooking or art. SAI staff is on-hand to help students connect with the right opportunities to make the best of their time in Paris.

Internships SAI Paris host schools offer a variety of internship opportunities, ranging from single-day assistance at an art gallery event through Paris College of Art, one-week opportunities to participate in Fashion Week through Paris American Academy, to credit-bearing full semester internships through the American University of Paris. For more information speak with your SAI Admissions Counselor.

Global Leadership Certificate The semester Global Leadership Certificate offered at our Paris program with the American University of Paris (AUP) is designed to enrich each student’s experiences while studying abroad and to acknowledge their academic and service work by providing an additional credential beyond the university transcript. The city of Paris offers students unique opportunities to link classroom learning to real world experiences, while living and studying in a dynamic international capital city. The Global Leadership Certificate is based on the premise that students engaged in their own communities and abroad have increased opportunities to develop leadership skills that contribute to academic and career success. While in Paris, students learn leadership strategies that can be applied in local and global contexts. Students broaden their awareness of global issues and deepen their knowledge of the host community’s role in an increasingly interconnected world through exploration of research, engagement in community services and interaction with experts and leaders. Mentoring and structured reflection are integrated into the Certificate Program. SAI coordinators in Paris serve as mentors and meet regularly with students to discuss their progress and perspectives on their individual and group experiences. The Global Leadership Certificate enhances leadership skills by helping students to understand themselves in relationship to the world community. Both the academic and service components enable students to identify economic, political and cultural forces that shape the global market and influence global leadership. When applying to the SAI program at AUP, students must indicate on their application the Global Leadership Certificate in their Paris program option. Global Leadership Course Examples: • Paris through its Architecture • 19th and 20th Century Art and Architecture • Multi-Disciplinary Perspective on Political Economy • Strategic Management: A Global Perspective • Marketing in a Global Environment • Media Globalization • The Internet and Globalization • Media and Gender • Global Advocacy

SAIENGLAND

london

LONDON

The City

SAIENGLAND

London is a world cultural capital, an extraordinary city filled with art and cultural expression; it is considered the most cosmopolitan city on earth. Settled by the Romans 2,000 years ago, today the metropolis has 13 million inhabitants and is a leading global city, with strengths in the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, media, tourism and transport all contributing to its prominence. The Thames River flows through the center and has shaped the city’s heritage.

London is a great place for student discounts. SAI staff provides weekly suggestions and options for students from free attractions, museums and events, to delicious budget meals, whether a new organic or vegetarian eatery or fusion cuisine, activities and the many open air markets all over the city. Student unions at the various colleges also organize events ensuring expensive nightlife is never an issue and meeting people from different cultures a must. On shopping, students usually ask about vintage clothing, high street shops, or a local mall and there is plenty available and affordable.

With its efficient subway (or Tube) it is easy to move about within London, while sites on the European continent are a quick weekend trip away. Because of its cosmopolitan nature students will meet people from around the world without struggling through a second language. The city’s exciting daily life and cultural institutions are an important part of the learning environment for students. SAI host schools are located in central London, within walking distance or a short underground ride of the British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Britain and Tate Modern. For students studying abroad London is an adventure that will impact the rest of their lives.

It seems as though one has to be very active to enjoy and benefit from the London experience – not so! A quiet day studying in one of the lovely cafés or tea houses or a walk (or run) in one of the many parks is a favourite among students. Londoners love to go green: one third of the city is covered with public and royal parks, urban gardens and small parks. Even something as simple as riding the Overground train helps students to get to know the city and inspire them with things to do. London is a large city and may seem daunting at first, but with vast numbers of restaurants, shops, cinemas, theaters, museums and green spaces nearby, students are never short of something stimulating to do.

Student Life

Travel is key for students in London, where weekends are juggled between university projects and a quick trip to one of the capitals. With four airports and the Eurostar train, Europe is truly on London’s doorstep. You can just hop on a train to Paris, as the Londoners do, for a day of shopping if that’s your fancy! Students always make the most of London’s location to travel and your SAI advisor will provide you with lots of information and tips on travelling low cost in Europe, including suggestions on places to go in other cities.

Studying in London is a different experience from most institutions back home, both in method of teaching and approach to course work. These differences can take students out of their comfort zone and provide challenges that help a student to view the world in a new light. Living London is an essential part of studying in London. The language may be (almost) the same however moving to London has so much diversity in its culture that students usually feel they are in a foreign country without the homesickness. London has everything. In many large cities, the museums and galleries are generally for tourists. This is not the case in London, where the locals appreciate history and culture too, and SAI organizes cultural activities to help get a taste of this passion for culture seeking by the locals. A weekend or day trip shows students different sides of England and the UK that reflect the astonishing history and culture. The UK has an amazing past and an equally amazing present, without losing sight of its history. The underground metro, (the “tube”), requires visitors to adopt what locals call “proper tube etiquette” – an essential of student life in this city. SAI staff will assist with information about using public transportation on a daily basis and provides information on daily travel whenever necessary.

PARTICIPATINGSCHOOLS Participating Universities & Colleges SAI accepts students from ALL schools, including those not directly affiliated with SAI. An affiliation with your school is not required. However, SAI has formal Affiliation Agreements with many universities and colleges in the U.S. and other countries. Students enrolling from one of our affiliated schools receive a variety of benefits, including fee reductions. Affiliated students should discuss their plans to attend an SAI program with the study abroad office at their home school. Affiliated schools guarantee their students will receive credit for courses from their home institution and will also assist in the procedure to use financial aid to study abroad. It is important that you meet with your study abroad advisor to determine how program fees are paid. Some schools require students to pay all fees directly to SAI; others require students to pay their home institution fees and the school will cover the cost of the study abroad program; still others

will require students to pay certain fees and their home institution will pay others. Be sure to discuss this with your study abroad advisor in order to be clear about the procedure your college or university follows in its affiliation with SAI. Students are responsible for verifying transfer credit before beginning their program. While affiliated schools guarantee credit, this does not guarantee every course will transfer, or that it will transfer to your major area of study. You will want to meet with your advisor for a final determination. Students from affiliated universities and colleges must enroll through their study abroad office in order to be certain they will benefit from the affiliation in place. If you are uncertain about your college or university’s affiliation with SAI, drop by your school’s study abroad office and discuss it with an advisor or contact the SAI office directly.

Students from the following affiliated and non-affiliated schools have attended SAI Programs as of 2014. Academy of Art University, San Francisco University Adrian College Agnes Scott College Albright College Alfred State College Alfred University American University Amherst College Anderson University Appalachian State University Arizona State University Arkansas State University Art Institute of Atlanta, The Art Institute of Chicago Auburn University Austin College Austin Community College Azusa Pacific University Bard College Bates College Bay State College Baylor University Belmont University Bennington College Bentley College Berry College Bethany College Binghamton University, SUNY Birmingham-Southern College Bloomfield College Boise State University Boston College Boston University Bradley University Brandeis University Brenau University Bridgewater State College Bryant University Bryn Mawr College Bucknell University Burlington College Cabrillo College California College of the Arts California Lutheran University California State Polytechnic University, Pomona California St. Polytechnic Univ., San Louis Obispo California State University, East Bay California State University, Long Beach Canisius College Capital University Career Counsel (Pvt) Ltd Carlow University Carnegie Mellon University

APPLICANTS FROM SAI-AFFILIATED SCHOOLS Students from affiliated schools should discuss their plans with the study abroad office at their home school. Some affiliate schools require students to pay all fees directly to SAI while others do not. Be sure to discuss this with your study abroad advisor in order to be clear about the procedure your school uses in their affiliation with SAI. Affiliate students receive credit for courses taken abroad from their home institution. While affiliated schools guarantee credit, this does not guarantee every course will transfer or that it will transfer into your major area of study. Students are responsible for meeting with an advisor to verify transfer credit before beginning their SAI program. If you are uncertain about your college or university’s affiliation with SAI, drop by your study abroad office to discuss it with an advisor or contact the SAI office. You will find a list of current affiliates on our website. Students from affiliated universities MUST obtain approval from their study abroad office prior to submitting an application to SAI.

APPLICANTS FROM NON-AFFILIATED SCHOOLS SAI welcomes students from any school. All students attending nonaffiliated home universities will receive U.S. course credit from the U.S. school of record for their SAI program. For information on the U.S. school of record for your specific program please see page 8 or go to the Services link on the program page of our website and click on “U.S. Academic Credit”.

106

www.saiprograms.com

SAI automatically processes non-affiliate students through our U.S. school of record; no additional fee is imposed. All questions and correspondence should be directed to the SAI office in California. Upon completion of course work, transcripts will be issued by the U.S. school of record with U.S. credits. These credits are transferable to any school, though it is the student’s responsibility to confirm that specific courses will transfer by speaking in advance with their school advisor or study abroad office.

DISABILITIES SAI is dedicated to providing education abroad opportunities to all students and does not discriminate on the basis of disability. If you experience any emotional, mental, physical or learning disabilities which may interfere with your ability to successfully pursue an academic course, and which you wish to be taken into account, please notify SAI as soon as possible. Advance planning is important in order to ensure the best possible experience abroad. Although we may not be able to require our partner schools abroad to provide accommodations, SAI can offer understanding, respect, and support, and we will do our best to assist students in finding reasonable accommodations similar to their home institutions. Regarding physical disability, it is important to note that Europe’s infrastructure and ability to accommodate disabled individuals differs from what is available in the United States. SAI will do its best to reasonably accommodate all students’ needs. Among our program choices, certain sites are better equipped to assist students with disabilities than others. As this may be a factor in choosing which SAI program abroad to attend, notify us of any and all disabilities before applying.

STUDENT VISAS All U.S. students studying in Italy, Spain, and France for more than 90 days are required to obtain a student visa. Non U.S. Citizens and students not residing in the U.S. should contact the nearest Consulate and follow their directions for obtaining a student visa. U.S. students studying in the U.K. for less than 6 months are not required to obtain a student visa.
