STUDY ABROAD 2019 / 2020

Dear Students, Parents and Colleagues: The impact of study abroad on a young person’s life is profound and follows them for a lifetime. All study abroad students undertake an unforgettable personal journey; one in which they not only deepen their understanding of culture but learn much about themselves in the process. Because globalization places new demands on students and decision-makers, undergraduate programs now require study abroad more than ever. It is critical for today’s student to understand the interconnection of world affairs and to experience, through living abroad, cultural difference and diversity. • For students of business, politics and international affairs, an international education is crucial. Without the expanded view provided by study abroad, students risk serious misunderstandings of environmental, economic, and industrial issues. Those who study a language in its mother country experience the nuances of meaning and a more specific understanding of the culture. For students of history and the arts, there is no substitute for viewing masterpieces of art and historical sites in person. • In 2020 SAI is proud to celebrate 25 years of service creating opportunities abroad for students. After living in Italy for 8 years my family and I returned to the U.S. in 1995, and from a spare room in our apartment I began to develop the excellent programs SAI would offer. I believe our experience in Italy is unmatched and results in the outstanding cultural experiences we offer. SAI’s hands-on approach has enabled us to match each student’s needs with the finest study abroad options in Italy, France and Spain. Our students experience SAI as an organization that provides programs and services of distinguishing quality and always with a personal touch. • As founder and President, I am committed to maintaining SAI as a small, personalized organization with staff who care for students and respond to their academic interests, cultural curiosities and career goals. As an intentionally small organization we are able to help each individual student feel comfortable in a new cultural environment. SAI is dedicated to introducing students to opportunities that encourage creative interaction across disciplines: communication, science, technology, art and design, economics and social sciences. In this way we seek to help students develop both the breadth and depth of creative thinking, cultural knowledge and professional skills, so when they return from their experience abroad they have a deeper understanding of themselves and the world. We believe this will provide an advantage to them in their chosen careers and for the rest of their lives. I invite you to learn more about SAI by visiting our web site: www.saiprograms.com. We provide all the assistance students need, allowing them to focus on thriving in their transformative experience. Housing Learning to live in a new environment is an important part of the study abroad experience. SAI recognizes the importance of safe and comfortable living spaces that help students make new friends and build community. Over our 25 years of operation, we have earned an excellent reputation for providing housing for students in beautiful apartments, as well as family homestays in some locations. Student Shared Apartments SAI student apartments are located in buildings and areas shared by local residents throughout host cities. This grants students exposure to everyday life in that city: shopping at local markets, enjoying a morning coffee at the neighborhood cafe, and establishing relationships with other locals in the building or around the neighborhood. Each SAI apartment is unique in size, age, floor plan, and number of bedrooms. SAI offers shared and private bedrooms and all apartments are well equipped with basic furnishings, a kitchen, living area and bathroom, as well as wifi. Family Homestays Family homestays are available in some locations and are a terrific way to ensure that language skills and cultural knowledge grow. Homestay families are thoroughly screened and are accustomed to welcoming visiting students into their homes. Homestays provide a shared or private bedroom in the family home with basic furnishings. “Studying abroad in Florence with SAI was the greatest experience. They provided us with so many opportunities to get to know the area better and to explore parts of Italy I would have never thought to visit on my own. SAI made my abroad experience incredible and I am so happy that I got to be apart of their program.” Annie Murphy, California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo Photo by Annie Murphy

“I was able to see Italy from the inside out, not as a tourist but as a real student. After learning the language well enough to get by on my own and well enough to complete a semester of classes in Italian, I have gained a confidence in myself that I am capable of far more than I had ever believed. I can now confirm that this experience was a necessity, and that I am better because of it.” Karisa Garner, Baylor University Photo by Karisa Garner

SAIALUMNI SAI Alumni Returning home from studying abroad can be both difficult and exhilarating. Students often return home with a new excitement for their future, and a deepened interest in international education, travel, and global citizenship. SAI Alumni services welcome students home with the same community that they were welcomed with in their host country. We offer fun and interesting opportunities for students to become SAI alumni for life—studying abroad is just a step in the journey to global citizenship! RE-ENTRY RESOURCES We offer various resources to help alumni understand all of the changes they went through abroad. We offer paid registration fees for re-entry conferences so students can connect with other globally-minded students and think about how they would like to weave their international experience into their future. Additionally, it is often difficult for students to articulate everything they gained through their time abroad, and we provide helpful guides to assist students with talking about it both in a personal and professional manner. We provide assistance with discussing study abroad experiences in job searches, including in resumes, cover letters, and interviews.

SAI AMBASSADORS We invite recent SAI alumni to join the SAI Ambassador Program to become representatives of study abroad and SAI on their home campus. SAI Ambassadors have an entrepreneurial spirit, and use their initiative to creatively share their study abroad experiences, while building knowledge of international education. After completing the SAI Ambassador program, students have opportunities for paid internships with SAI, as well as becoming Leadership Mentors. GO ABROAD AGAIN DISCOUNTS We never want to say goodbye - that’s why we offer discounts for alumni to return abroad with SAI! Go abroad again with SAI on a summer or semester program, or participate in a different type of international experience such as an internship, graduate certificate program or even earn your Master’s degree abroad. ALUMNI PHOTO CONTEST Our Alumni Photo Contest asks students to reflect on their study abroad experiences and to identify the most meaningful photos that embody the growth and memories that came from them. We offer prizes like gift certificates and fun travel swag.

SAI ALUMNI NETWORK We welcome all SAI alumni to join the SAI Alumni group, which connects past and present SAI students across the globe. The group is a resource for getting to know others who have been through similar experiences, expanding professional networks, gaining professional development advice, and learning about unique opportunities in international education. “I spent my first day in Paris taking selfies with the Mona Lisa in the Louvre Museum, wandering down the streets of Saint Michel and having a picnic dinner in front of the Eiffel Tower. I will never forget my time in this beautiful city.”

Christina Kaminskyj, Stockton University

ALUMNISPOTLIGHT

“My advice to anyone getting ready to go abroad would be to keep an open mind, and try everything- even if it’s scary. Talk to your baristas, befriend your local neighbors, try a new coffee shop every day, go to a new museum every week…the possibility are endless! Get out and explore, and embrace your discomfort.” Camille Seidel, Muhlenberg College

“Going abroad with SAI was the best decision I’ve ever made. They ensured that the new city I called home was in fact that - a home. The on-site staff, and SAI in general, felt not only like a huge support system, but a family.” Nicole Gagne, Stephens College

SAI Ambassadors have opportunities to excite and engage students even after they return. The SAI Ambassador Program provides alumni the opportunity to share their study abroad experiences with prospective students, while building their knowledge of international education.
