STUK, A HOUSE FOR IMAGE
NL In september start STUK een tweede seizoen als Huis voor Dans, Beeld en Geluid. Op vlak van BEELD en BEELDENDE kunst betekent dit dat we opnieuw een continu seizoensprogramma voorstellen waarin kunstenaarsfilms en -installaties centraal staan in Moving Image Expo, onderbroken door Playground in november en Artefact in februari. Zo kan je het hele seizoen hedendaagse BEELDENDE kunst smaken in STUK.
EN In September STUK will open its second season as House for Dance, Image & Sound. We are working towards a packed IMAGE and VISUAL arts programme in which an array of artists’ films and installations take centre stage during our Moving Image Expos in the autumn and spring, with the addition of Playground in November and Artefact in February. This means that throughout the season at STUK you can immerse yourself in contemporary VISUAL art.
In november slaan STUK en museum M de handen weer in elkaar voor Playground. Het festival waar podiumkunsten en beeldende kunsten elkaar ontmoeten is dit seizoen aan zijn tiende editie toe. In deze brochure vind je alvast enkele suggesties uit het rijk gevulde programma. STUK blijft zich engageren voor kunstkritiek. Dit doen we door het ondersteunen van de Prijs voor Jonge Kunstkritiek dat in 2016 opnieuw prijzen uitreikt aan kunstcritici in de categorieën essay, recensie en innovatieve kritiek. Maar we werken ook graag mee aan de voedingsbodem, de humuslaag. Met Leuven Kritiek introduceert STUK i.s.m rekto:verso, 30CC en KU Leuven een kijk-, schrijf- en discussietraject voor tien criticiin-spe. De tien kandidaten zullen naast dans en theater ook beeldende kunst onder de loep nemen waaronder de STUK Moving Image Expo’s en Artefact. Speaking of which: Artefact gaat in 2017 op zoek naar wat de term magie kan betekenen in onze hedendaagse samenleving. We lichten in deze brochure alvast een tip van de sluier op. Daarnaast vinden we deze Beeldbrochure ook de uitgelezen plek om onze discursieve activiteiten, lezingen en debatten over onderwerpen die er vandaag toe doen samen te brengen.
Dit najaar staat het werk van de Turkse kunstenaar Emre Hüner in de spotlights. Met Neochronophobiq, een 3-channel filminstallatie neemt hij ons mee naar een plek die schijnbaar buiten de tijd lijkt te staan. De objecten, architecturale bouwsels en nederzettingen roepen vage herinneringen op, al kunnen ze net zo goed uit een ongedefinieerde toekomst komen. Bevreemdend in zijn geheel doet het ons nadenken over onze plaats als mens in de wereld. Emre Hüner licht zijn werk zelf toe op de opening op 12 oktober. We nodigen je hierbij van harte uit om een glas mee te drinken.

In November we welcome you again to Playground (together with museum M). The festival, in which the performing arts and visual arts meet, is now in its tenth edition. In this brochure you can find a preview with a few recommendations from its rich programme. STUK continues to engage with art criticism. We do this through our support of the Prize for Young Dutch Art Criticism, which again in 2016 awarded prizes to art critics in the categories of essay, review and innovative criticism. But we also like to work from the ground up, with budding talents. With Leuven Kritiek, STUK, in collaboration with rekto:verso, 30CC and KU Leuven, is introducing a viewing, writing and discussion programme for ten critics-to-be. Alongside dance and theatre, the ten candidates will be taking a closer look at the visual arts, including STUK’s Moving Image Expos and Artefact. Speaking of which, in 2017 Artefact will explore what the term magic might mean in our contemporary society. We offer you a sneak preview in this brochure. We also think that this is the right spot to bring together our discursive actvitities, lectures and debates on topics that matter today.
Under the spotlight this autumn is the work of Emre Hüner. With Neochronophobig, a 3-channel video installation, he takes us to a place that appears to exist outside of time. The objects, architectural structures and settlements appear strangely familiar, though they could just as well come from an undefined future. Its alienating effect provokes us to consider our position as humans on the planet. Emre Hüner will introduce his work in person on 12 October. We cordially invite you to join us and raise a glass together! The Moving Image Focus series will also commence again in October; this time with the South Korean filmmaker Hong Sang-soo. This series will also be intensified. From the worlds of cinephiles and specialised festivals, we’ll be selecting the pearls that deserve to be shown more frequently. These will be screened (for free!) together with an introduction or discussion afterwards — with the director themselves, whenever possible. You can of course also still opt for the continued art house cinema programme at Cinema ZED. They are also looking forward to welcoming you again to the Leuven Short Film Fest in December. And don’t miss the LABO series in which the crossovers between cinematography and, among others, the visual arts are explored.

INTRODUCTION
Ook de Moving Image Focus-reeks gaat in oktober weer van start met een film van de Zuid-Koreaanse cineast Hong Sang-soo. De reeks wordt trouwens geïntensifieerd. We selecteren de pareltjes van het cinefiele werk dat meer presentatiemogelijkheden verdient dan enkel de screenings op de gespecialiseerde festivals. We bieden ze je (gratis!) aan met inleiding of nagesprek en als het even kan in aanwezigheid van de regisseur. Natuurlijk kan je voor de betere arthouse cinema nog steeds terecht bij Cinema ZED. In december verwelkomen zij je trouwens opnieuw voor het Internationaal Kortfilmfestival. Mis de Laboreeks niet waarin vanuit cinematografie de cross-over met o.a. beeldende kunst wordt gezocht.

Immers, zowel nationaal als internationaal creëren meer en meer kunstenaars straf werk dat in de Vlaamse museum- en tentoonstellingszalen nog te weinig aan bod komt. Dit najaar belichten we recent werk van beeldend kunstenaar Emre Hüner.

MOVING IMAGE EXPO EN In the series MOVING IMAGE EXPO, STUK presents exhibitions focusing on multiple screen audio- visual works. Indeed, more and more compelling works by national and international artists unfortunately don’t reach our Belgian museums and exhibition halls often enough. This Fall, we turn the spotlights to recent work by visual artist Emre Hüner.

EN In this MOVING IMAGE EXPO, STUK is delighted to present the work of visual artist Emre Hüner. In his drawings, sculptures, installations and video works, Hüner explores the subjects of post-humanism and objectoriented ontology, utopia and archaeology, and ideas of time and materiality. The exhibition in STUK focuses on the impressive 3-channel video piece Neochronophobiq, with the actor Tómas Lemarquis, which is shown for the first time in Europe after its premiere in the Istanbul Biennale in 2015. Neochronophobiq — a conjunction of neo, chronophobia (fear of time) and ubiquitous — creates a fictional realm, almost an extra dimension, where the simultaneous desire for progress and absence of new technologies merge. Artefacts and rituals, architectural entities, unidentifiable topographies and the materiality of geological temporality play the lead roles in this peculiar work. In STUK, Neochronophobiq is presented next to a selection of sculptures and drawings that are featured in the installation. The sculptures can be understood as an accumulation of ideas and forms, of materials of organic or unknown qualities. As perpetual islands, they are the artefacts through which ideas of time and materiality are channelled.
NL STUK presenteert in deze MOVING IMAGE EXPO het werk van beeldend kunstenaar Emre Hüner. In zijn tekeningen, sculpturen, installaties en videowerk behandelt Hüner thema’s als post- humanisme en object-georiënteerde ontologie, utopie en archeologie, en ideeën van tijd en materialiteit. Centraal staat het indrukwekkende 3-channel videowerk Neochronophobiq, met de acteur Tómas Lemarquis, dat voor de eerste keer in Europa getoond wordt na de première op de Istanbul Biënnale in 2015. Neochronophobiq — een samentrekking tussen neo, chronophobia (angst voor tijd) en ubiquitous (alomtegenwoordigheid) — toont een fictieve wereld, een andere dimensie als het ware, waarin een vooruitgangsdroom lijkt samen te smelten met een totale afwezigheid van technologie. Artefacten en rituelen, architecturale vormen, niet-identificeerbare nederzettingen, landschappen en geologische materialen spelen de hoofdrol in dit bevreemdende werk. In STUK wordt Neochronophobiq gepresenteerd samen met een selectie sculpturen en een tekeningenreeks die deel uitmaken van het videowerk. De sculpturen kunnen begrepen worden als een opeenstapeling van ideeën en vormen, van organische of onbekende materialen. Als eeuwige

EN Ham Chunsu is an art-film director who has come to Suwon for a screening of one of his movies. He meets Yoon Heejung, a fledgling artist. She’s never seen any of his films and he’d like to see her paintings and then go for sushi and soju. Every word, every pause, every facial expression, and every movement is a negotiation between revelation and concealment. So they walk the fine line all the way to a tough and mordantly funny end point, at which time … we begin again. ‘Hong Sang-soo achieves a maximum of layered nuance with a minimum of people, places, and incidents. Enriched by the naturalistic performances of the two leads, Hong’s elegant or eccentric experiments with narrative form, his characteristically subtle camerawork (with gracefully staged long takes accented by a slight pan or a sudden zoom) and unexpected bursts of humour, Right Now, Wrong Then is a delightful addition to Hong’s cinematic catalogue.’ (NYFF & Giovanna Fulvi) Right Now, Wrong Then won the 2015 Golden Leopard in Locarno.

NL Een arthouseregisseur komt terecht in Suwon omdat één van zijn films er wordt vertoond. Daar ontmoet hij een beginnende kunstenares. Zij heeft nog nooit een film van hem gezien; hij wil graag haar schilderijen zien en haar mee uit eten nemen. Elk woord, elke pauze, elke gelaatsuitdrukking, elke beweging is een onderhandeling tussen verhullen en onthullen. Het komt tot een hard en bijtend grappig eindpunt, waarna … ze opnieuw beginnen. ‘Hong Sang-soo bereikt een maximale gelaagdheid met een minimum aan mensen, plaatsen en gebeurtenissen. Right Now, Wrong Then is een verrukkelijke toevoeging aan zijn cinematografische catalogus. EN For the tenth year in a row Playground presents a selection of unique performances by artists who don’t bind themselves to one or another discipline. Their practices take form in a combination of installations, text, film, sculpture or choreography. Objects and bodies meet in provocative performances blending the performing arts with the visual arts. They create new imagery reflecting on art, the world and the mediatisation of our lives. In recent years, interest in the performing arts from the visual art world has again been increasing. In response to this and in collaboration with museum M, Playground is pleased to present four projects with their roots in the visual arts: This autumn M presents the first Belgian solo exhibition of Mary Reid Kelley. With costumes, masks and poetic wordplay she creates video works in a black and white world reminiscent of graphic novels. For Playground Kelley is making her first live performance: a pathologist examines the body of a woman after her suicide. A liver, heart and brain argue about what exactly took place. This is Offal is an existentialist, feminist horror, brimming with wordplay. In Relational Stalinism — The Musical, Michael Portnoy presents a sequence of scenes that question the medium of performance and the art world itself. Elements from, among others, theatre, taiko drum, micro-dance, comedy, call-centre communication, and satire are combined. Portnoy’s manipulation of language and movement cause confusion, absurdity and laughter. Using speech-recognition Anna Barham invites you to enter into dialogue with a computer. The computer decodes the rhythm, cadence and emotion of a text read out loud whereby meaning, syntax and punctuation become muddled up. In this way, Barham points out the everyday volleys of verbiage and the possible dangers through the influence of technology of subjective (mis)interpretation. With his charismatic and provocative performances, videos, music and poetry, Nástio Mosquito brings a new raw voice to the contemporary arts. His work revolves around the incredible potential of language. In this compelling and visually powerful performance Respectable Thief he combines video, music and live performance to reinforce his eloquent anger.

NL Voor het tiende jaar op rij brengt Playground een selectie unieke performances van kunstenaars die zich niet aan één discipline binden. Zij combineren in hun praktijk elementen uit installatie, tekst, film, sculptuur of choreografie. In uitdagende live performances in het veld tussen podium en beeldende kunst brengen ze objecten en lichamen samen. Ze creëren nieuwe visuele beelden die reflecteren over kunst, de wereld en de mediatisering van het leven. De laatste jaren is de interesse van de beeldende kunst wereld voor performance opnieuw toegenomen. In samenwerking met museum M speelt Playground hier op in. We stellen graag vier projecten voor met wortels in de beeldende kunst: In M loopt dit najaar de eerste Belgische solotentoonstelling van Mary Reid Kelley. Met kostuums, maskers en poëtische woordspelingen creëert ze video’s in een zwart-wit wereld die sterk aan graphic novel doet denken. Voor Playground maakte Kelley haar eerste live performance: een patholoog onderzoekt een vrouwenlichaam na haar zelfmoord. Lever, hart en hersenen ruziën over wat er precies is gebeurd. This Is Offal is existentialistische, feministische horror vol woordspelingen. Michael Portnoy toont in Relational Stalinism — The Musical een opeenvolging van scenes die het medium van de performance en de kunstwereld zelf bevragen. Elementen uit oa theater, taiko drum, micro-dans, comedy, callcenter-taal en satire worden gecombineerd. Portnoy’s manipulatie van taal en beweging zorgen voor verwarring, absurditeit en hilariteit. Anna Barham nodigt je uit om in gesprek te treden met een spraakherkenningscomputer. Deze decodeert het ritme, cadans en emotie van een voorgelezen tekst zodat betekenis, zinsbouw en leestekens door elkaar lopen. Barham wijst zo op onze alledaagse woordenstroom en het mogelijke gevaar van een subjectieve interpretatie onder invloed van technologieën. Met zijn charismatische en provocatieve performances, video’s, muziek en poëzie zorgt Nástio Mosquito voor een nieuwe, rauwe stem in de hedendaagse kunst. In de meeslepende en visueel krachtige performance Respectable thief combineert hij video, muziek en live-performance om zijn eloquente woede kracht bij te zetten.

EN Every year, the International Short Film Festival (IKL) presents a round-up of the best short films. The programme features fiction and animated films, non-narrative visuals and all possible crossovers between these genres. STUK’s choice goes out in particular to the Labo series; a series for compilations of surprising, mostly non-narrative movies and videos that challenge the medium itself or make crossovers with other (art) disciplines and as such deviate from the classical movies. On the programme are a.o. the presentation of the single screen version of the work Exodus by Nicolas Provost. The programme will be launched at the end of October.

‘familiebijeenkomsten’ met alle deelnemers om ervaringen uit te wisselen. EN Familie is a participative arts project in which the interpretation and the experience of the spectator is important. Artist Kristof Van Gestel is looking for fifteen people from Leuven to adopt and take home one of the sculptures from the series Familie for the duration of the project, from October until May. The participants are invited to give the artwork a meaningful place in their everyday lives. At the start of the project, halfway through, and again at the end of the period, the participants are invited to reflect upon their experience in a group discussion. These ‘family meetings’ are moments to exchange experiences.

Kunstenaar Kristof Van Gestel zoekt vijftien mensen uit Leuven die van oktober tot mei een kunstwerk uit de reeks Familie willen adopteren en mee naar huis nemen. De deelnemers worden uitgedaagd om het kunstwerk een betekenisvolle plaats in hun leven te geven. Bij aanvang, halfweg en op het einde van het project zijn er

EN Artefact is a themed exhibition and festival in which contemporary art, society, technology and science intertwine. In 2017, Artefact is devoted to magic and magical thinking. What is magic today? What role does it have as a phenomenon in our contemporary society? How is it used as a metaphor? And what do contemporary artists have to say about this? Magic exists in many forms and interpretations from the contemporary magician or illusionist to new forms of spiritualism. It is an inherently ambiguous concept that brings notions such as magic, wonder, illusion and spectacle to mind, but also points to the irrational, occult or supernatural, to rituals, animism and shamanism. It is a domain that reaches across the spectrum, from innocent entertainment, to pure manipulation or the revelation of a strange world filled with magic and inexplicable forces. The Act of Magic explores how artists relate in an equally ambiguous way to magic. In search of incantation and enchantment, fascinated by the magical powers of illusion and transformation on the one hand, while remaining critical on the other, questioning how magical thinking works as a metaphor in the complex systems of modern science, politics, economics or technology. From poetry to strategy, from magic object to the black box, from innocent illusion to manipulation, from New Age self-help advertising to spiritual visions: immerse yourself in a world of mesmerizing hand gestures, magical objects, digital ghosts and mind-altering experiments. NL Artefact is een thematentoonstelling en festival waarin hedendaagse kunst, maatschappij, technologie en wetenschap elkaar kruisen. In 2017 staat Artefact in het teken van magie en magisch denken. Wat betekent magie vandaag? Welke rol speelt het als fenomeen in onze samenleving? Hoe wordt het ingezet als metafoor? En wat hebben hedendaagse kunstenaars hierover te vertellen? Magie bestaat in vele vormen en interpretaties gaande van de hedendaagse goochelaar of illusionist tot nieuwe vormen van spiritualisme. Het is een van nature ambigu concept dat begrippen als betovering, verwondering, illusie en spektakel oproept maar tegelijkertijd ook verwijst naar het irrationele, het occulte of bovennatuurlijke, naar rituelen, animisme en sjamanisme. Het is een domein dat zich afspeelt op een brede lijn van onschuldig vertier, naar pure manipulatie tot de openbaring van een wonderlijke wereld vol magische en onverklaarbare krachten. In The Act of Magic wordt onderzocht hoe kunstenaars zich op een al even ambigue manier verhouden tot magie. Enerzijds gefascineerd door de magische kracht van illusie en transformatie, op zoek naar bezwering en betovering maar anderzijds ook kritisch, onderzoekend hoe magisch denken als metafoor werkzaam is in de complexe systemen van de hedendaagse wetenschap, politiek, economie of technologie. EN The biennial Prize for Young Art Criticism has awarded young art critics in the Dutch /Flemish area since 2008. Winners in various categories receive a cash prize and a mentor for one year. EN Leuven Kritiek is a viewing, writing and discussion programme around dance, theatre and the visual arts. Together ten critics-to-be visit performances and exhibitions in Leuven. They write reviews and essays, give each other feedback, and discuss the sense and nonsense of art criticism. Leuven Kritiek is an initiative from STUK, rekto:verso, 30CC and KU Leuven designed to stimulate quality reflective writing in Leuven. EN Alzheimer’s disease is quickly becoming one of the world’s most prevalent illnesses. We give the floor to two top researchers, Wiesje van der Flier (VUmc Alzheimercentrum) en Christine Van Broeckhoven (VIB / UA), involved in work looking into the causes, preventions, and cures of this most common form of dementia. Finally Rik Vandenberghe (Geheugenkliniek UZ Leuven) will talk about the implantation of research results in the clinical practice.

EMRE HÜNER (°1977, Istanbul, Turkey) NL Emre Hüner is een beeldend kunstenaar die woont en werkt in Istanbul. In zijn tekeningen, sculpturen, installaties en video werk creëert hij verhaalconstructies en eclectische assemblages die onderwerpen als utopie en archeologie, en ideeën van vooruitgang en toekomst, onderzoeken. Zijn werk werd gepresenteerd in solotentoonstellingen in CCA Kitakyushu, Japan (2015), Rodeo, Istanbul (2013) en het Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2013), en werd opgenomen in groepstentoonstellingen in onder andere de Istanbul Biënnale (2015), het Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, USA (2014) en Manifesta 9, Genk (2011). NL In deze lezing, n.a.v. de Spinozalensprijs, wil de Brits-Ghanese filosoof / schrijver Anthony Appiah ingaan op uitdagingen die verschillende vormen van religieuze en nationale identiteit stellen. Een verkeerd begrip van identiteit zorgt immers voor heel wat problemen in het sociale en politieke bestel. Filosofie kan klaarheid brengen en inzichten en opties aandragen die vooral nodig zijn in kwesties over religie en nationalisme en de relatie tussen beiden. EN In this lecture the leading British-Ghanaian philosopher / writer Antony Appiah addresses challenges posed by various forms of religious and national identity. After all, misunderstanding identity engenders manifold problems in the social and political system. Philosophy can advise on the options that are nowhere more necessary than in matters of religion, nationalism.
EN Emre Hüner is a visual artist, living and working in Istanbul. Working with drawing, video, sculpture, and installations, Hüner’s practice focuses on constructed narratives and eclectic assemblages which explore the subjects of utopia, archaeology, ideas of progress, and the future through reimagining spatial and architectural entities and organic and artificial forms. HONG SANG-SOO (°1960, Zuid-Korea) NL Hong Sang-soo studeerde aan de universiteit van Seoul en volgde filmopleidingen in Los Angeles, Chicago en Parijs. Vervolgens keerde hij terug naar Zuid-Korea, waar hij sindsdien zowat elk jaar een speelfilm wist af te leveren. Voor zijn debuut The Day a Pig Fell into the Well won hij in 1997 op IFFR een Tiger Award. Hahaha werd in 2010 in Cannes bekroond met de Un Certain Regard-prijs. Hongs films worden regelmatig geselecteerd voor de competities van Cannes, Berlijn, New York en Venetië. Right Now, Wrong Then won in 2015 de Golden Leopard in Locarno.

Figure a sea is een ontmoeting tussen twee cultfiguren. Deborah Hay, die de postmoderne dans van de jaren 60 mee bepaalde, tekende voor de choreografie. Laurie Anderson creëerde een nieuwe elektronische compositie. Een wondermooi resultaat van de vernieuwingsoperatie bij Cullbergbaletten. EN Think of the sea. What do you see? Eighteen dancers carry the audience into an unceasing flow. Figure a Sea is an encounter between two cult figures. The first is choreographer Deborah Hay, who helped define postmodern dance in the 60’s. Hay joins forces with the American composer and musician Laurie Anderson who has created a new electronic composition for the piece. An exceptionally beautiful result of the recent innovations at Cullbergbaletten, the classical ballet of Stockholm.

NL Cher Ami is Yuko’s vierde album maar ook veel meer dan dat: een voorstelling aan de hand van een animatiefilm over drie iconische dieren die meevochten tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Tekenaars Ivan Adriaenssens, Roman Klochkov en Gustavo Garcia en creatief collectief De Commerce maken een visuele vertaling van drie gedenkwaardige verhalen uit onverwachte (West)hoek. Een live soundtrack zeg maar, die een licht schijnt op de vaak vergeten helden uit de oorlog. EN Cher Ami is Yuko’s fourth album, presented live with a performance based on an animation film about three iconic animals that fought during the First World War. The animations are created by Ivan Adriaenssens, Roman Klochkov and Gustavo Garcia and creatieve collective De Commerce, creating a visual translation of three legendary tales from an unexpected West. A live soundtrack that shines a light on forgotten war heroes.

EN Hong Sang-soo (1960, South Korea) studied at the university of Seoul and subsequently attended film schools in Los Angeles, Chicago and Paris. He then returned to South Korea where he has produced a new film almost every year. He won the IFFR and Tiger Award in 1997 for his debut The Day the Pig Fell into the Well. Hahaha was awarded the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes in 2010. Hong’s films are regularly selected for the festival competitions at Cannes, Berlin, New York and Venice.
