STUK, EEN HUIS VOOR DANS JANUARI - MAART 2016 Hoe verbeelden we onze toekomst in deze onzekere tijden? De nood om samen te komen, van gedachten te wisselen en onze eigen positie te bevragen is tastbaar. Ook de kunsten hebben hier een rol in te spelen. Niet alleen met kritische voorstellingen, maar even goed met poëtisch werk dat aandacht vergt en ons verbeeldingsvermogen aanspreekt. In STUK trekken we 2016 op gang met de reeks Encore! Na een uitgebreide Canadese toernee is Jan Martens terug in het land met THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER, een fysieke uitputtingsslag die ons terugwerpt op de essentie van het theater. Met de eindeloze herhaling van folkdansbewegingen daagt ook de Italiaanse choreograaf Alessandro Sciarroni ons kijken uit in FOLK-S. Cecilia Bengolea & François Chaignaud en Ula Sickle doorbreken in hun voorstellingen de westerse canon en brengen populaire dansstijlen uit respectievelijk Jamaica en Congo binnen. Arkadi Zaides grijpt naar de keel met zijn solo Archive: een choreografie van geweld gebaseerd op documentairemateriaal uit de bezette gebieden. In twee intimistische solo’s gaat Charlotte Vanden Eynde op zoek naar de poëzie van het lichaam. Naast hernemingen voert STUK ook een actief beleid rond het ontwikkelen en presenteren van nieuw werk. In de STUK Labozaal timmert Georgia Vardarou aan de première van New Narratives waarin ze de verhalende kracht van de dans onder de loep neemt. Ugo Dehaes is te gast met DMNT, een ontroerend portret over verloren lopen in je eigen hoofd. Meg Stuart is twee keer te gast met een nieuwe groepscreatie en een solo-avond gedanst door haarzelf. Met Sidi Larbi Cherkoaui als nieuw artistiek leider is Ballet Vlaanderen voor het eerst sinds jaren weer te gast in Leuven met een mixed bill.

Traditiegetrouw staat de maand februari in het teken van Artefact festival. Voor deze editie met als thema Up in the Air gaan we op zoek naar de poëtische, politieke en economische parameters die onze verhouding tot het luchtruim bepalen. In deze brochure lichten we er alvast enkele performances uit. Na een hartverwarmende editie van het familiefestival Rode Hond en de premièrereeks van Alleen de grootste nabijheid zetten we onze Werking Jong Publiek onverminderd voort. Tornar van Seppe Baeyens is geschikt voor iedereen vanaf 8 jaar. Tijdens de paasvakantie werken we een programma uit op maat van de allerkleinsten. Met nagesprekken, workshops en een vak danstheorie in samenwerking met de KU Leuven betrekken we onze bezoekers actief bij ons werking. STUK, A HOUSE FOR DANCE JANUARY - MARCH 2016 How do we imagine our future in times of darkness? Times where the need to come together, exchange ideas and question our own position is almost tangible. The arts have an important role to play in times like these. Not only by presenting critical performances, but also with poetic work that asks for our attention and appeals to our sense of imagination. STUK kicks off 2016 with the Encore! series. After an extensive Canadian tour, Jan Martens returns to Belgium with THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER, an exhausting physical tour de force that casts us back to the essence of theatre. The endless repetition of folk dance movements in Italian choreographer Alessandro Sciarroni’s FOLK-S is another way of challenging the way we watch. Cecilia Bengolea & François Chaignaud and Ula Sickle break through the Western canon, infusing their performances with popular dance styles respectively from Jamaica and Congo. Arkadi Zaides presents his gripping solo Archive, a choreography of violence based on documentary material from the occupied territories. In two intimist solos Charlotte Vanden Eynde looks for the poetry of the body. Next to these reprises of existing work, STUK also actively develops new work. In STUK Labozaal Georgia Vardarou rehearses for the premiere of New Narratives, in which she takes a close look at the narrative power of dance. Ugo Dehaes presents DMNT, a touching portrait of getting lost in your own head. Meg Stuart is invited twice with a new group creation and a night in which she performs her own solo works. With Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui as their new artistic leader, Ballet Vlaanderen returns to Leuven for the first time in years with a mixed bill. True to tradition, February is the month of Artefact festival. For this edition, themed

Up in the Air, we look for the poetical, political and economic parameters that determine our relation with the airspace. In this brochure, we highlight some must-see performances. After a heart-warming edition of the family festival Rode Hond and the premiere series of Alleen de grootste nabijheid, we continue our Young Audience Programme without hesitation. Seppe Baeyens’ Tornar is suited for everybody above 8 years old. During the Easter holidays, we put together a programme tailored to toddlers and young kids. With aftertalks, workshops and and a dance theory course in collaboration with KU Leuven, we actively involve our visitors in our programme. Liefde is ongrijpbaar en grillig. Ze verzet bergen, creëert onmetelijke hoogtes en geeft kracht maar ze kan evengoed een vernietigende pijn veroorzaken. Voor Vandekeybus is de kracht van muziek op een scène even direct, onweerstaanbaar en vervoerend als de emotie van liefde. Vandaar dat hij voor Speak low ... opnieuw Mauro Pawlowksi en zijn kompanen onder de arm neemt. Love is elusive and capricious. In DMNT, Ugo Dehaes tries to fathom the process of dementia by trying to understand what goes on in the mind of the dementia sufferer. He translates the physical patterns to the stage. Through movement, the viewer gets to see what it is to forget, how concentration turns into obsession, how thoughts evolve, and how old memories continually recur. The result is a physical trio, in which he dances alongside Kayoko Minami and Charlotte Vanden Eynde. When Vardarou presented Phenomena at STUK, she created a beautiful performance in which she searched for the expressive power of personal, individual movements. New Narratives goes a step further and occupies the shared space between stories and abstraction, with characters and storylines popping up to provide the audience with an understanding of the events. In addition, there is a continuous flow of movements that appear and disappear.

FOLK-S takes its inspiration from the Schuhplattler: a traditional dance from Bavaria and Tyrol in which hands slap legs and shoe soles. The smacking of this dance of seduction determines the rhythm and is performed to impress. Six dancers repeat the movements in an infinite loop. Variations in the patterns transform the bodies through physical exertion. Fragments of Mahler, Lil Wayne and Bomb The Bass pervade the movements, creating an addictive suspense. Or is this performance really about power?

an arena: an unreliable, high-octane refuge, a place of desire and illusion. To the sound of throbbing basses, piano and drums – a mix between improvisation and composition - they make optimistic attempts to meet impossible deadlines.

De Amerikaanse Meg Stuart heeft een speciale band met STUK en Leuven. In 1991 werd ze hier op het toenmalige Klapstukfestival ontdekt met haar eerste avondvullende voorstelling Disfigure Study. Met An evening of solo works keert ze nu terug naar STUK. Deze selectie van solo’s uit het verleden, waarin ze dagelijkse bewegingen en fysieke toestanden exploreert, is een soort staalkaart van Stuarts oeuvre. In elk van de solo’s geeft Meg Stuart zelf op eigenzinnige wijze uiting aan haar karakteristieke signatuur. The American Meg Stuart has a special connection with STUK and Leuven. She was discovered here in 1991 during the former Klapstuk Festival with her early work Disfigure Study. She now returns to STUK with various solos in which she explores everyday movements and physical situations. In addition she looks beyond the boundaries of dance and expands her language of movement together with musicians, designers and visual artists.

In 2007 startte B’Tselem een documentaireproject waarbij Palestijnse vrijwilligers schendingen van de mensenrechten filmen. Dat filmmateriaal toont de lichamelijke reacties van de Israëli’s tijdens gewelddadige confrontaties. De Palestijnen blijven onzichtbaar achter de camera, toch zijn hun bewegingen, stemmen en posities bepalend voor het perspectief van de kijker. De beelden onthullen een lokale realiteit, maar de choreograaf stelt een universelere vraag: is elk individueel lichaam potentieel gewelddadig?

Ze experimenteert met betekenis en emotie, maar laat de toeschouwer in het ongewisse over wat hij te zien krijgt. Shapeless bouwt verder op dat bewegingsonderzoek maar legt de focus op de vorm i.p.v. op de betekenis. De zuiver fysieke, vormelijke en vooral de dynamische aspecten van de beweging vormen het vertrekpunt. In I’m Sorry It’s (Not) A Story, Charlotte Vanden Eynde looks for image and poetry in dance. She experiments with meaning and emotion but keeps the viewer guessing about what he or she sees. Further building on this movement research, Shapeless focuses on form rather than meaning. Its starting points are the purely physical, formal and especially the dynamic aspects of movement. In 2007 B’Tselem began a documentary project in which Palestinian volunteers film violations of human rights. The films focuses on the physical reactions of Israelis during violent confrontations. Palestinians remain invisible behind the camera, yet their movements, voices and positions determine the viewer’s perspective. The images reveal local realities, but the choreographer proposes more universal questions about the violent potential of each individual body.

Schots en scheef is een pittige en woordeloze danstheatervoorstelling waarin tafels torens worden en nog zoveel meer! De tafels staan echter scheef en al puzzelend zoeken Ciska en Lies een evenwicht. Aan het eind van de voorstelling mogen de kleuters ook zelf op verkenning, op en onder de tafels.

Schots en scheef is a snappy, wordless dance theatre performance with tables turning into towers and so much more! The only problem: the tables don’t stand upright, so Ciska and Lies try to figure out how to balance them. At the end of the performance, the toddlers can explore on their own, on and under the tables.

DI 5 APR — 19:00 — STUK SOETEZAAL BASIS €12 | REDUCTIE €8 Rauw is een energieke dansvoorstelling met live muziek van Thomas Devos over spelen, dromen, doen alsof, kind zijn ook als het niet kan. Het gaat over opgroeien in soms moeilijke omstandigheden, gezien vanuit het perspectief van kinderen. En over de volwassenen die voor hen moeten zorgen, die ondoorgrondelijk zijn, soms dichtbij, maar meestal ver weg.

Rauw is an energetic dance performance with live music by Thomas Devos about playing, dreaming, faking and being a child - even if you can’t. It’s about growing up in sometimes difficult circumstances, seen from the perspective of children. And about the adults who have to take care of them, who are inscrutable, sometimes close, but often far away.

ARTEFACT FESTIVAL 9 — 21 FEB 2016 WWW.ARTEFACT-FESTIVAL.BE Artefact is een tentoonstelling en kunstenfestival waar hedendaagse (beeld)cultuur, actualiteit en maatschappelijke uitdagingen centraal staan. Met het thema Up in the Air wordt onze poëtische, politieke en economische verhouding tot de lucht en het luchtruim onder de loep genomen. De gratis expo verzamelt hierrond kunstwerken en installaties uit binnen- en buitenland. Het thema worden verder uitgediept met een reeks lezingen en performances, waarvan je hierbij een overzicht krijgt. Tijdens het Artefact music festival worden de verschillende ontwikkelingen binnen de elektronische muziek in de kijker gezet.

Artefact is an exhibition and arts festival on contemporary visual culture, current events and societal challenges. With Up in the Air we shed light on the poetic, political and economic us of our air space. The free exhibition brings together artworks and installations from Belgium and abroad. The theme will be deepened by lectures and performances enlisted below . Remote sensing is a technology that provides information about an object, phenomenon or area without making physical contact. Op deze avond nodigen we Rodrigo Sobarzo uit met Remote Sense. Remote sensing is een technologie die informatie verschaft over een object, fenomeen of gebied zonder er fysiek mee in contact te komen. Zo legt het landschappen bloot die anders verborgen zouden blijven. Met zijn handen en lichaam als gereedschap onthult Rodrigo Sobarzo een landschap van zout en licht, als een beeldhouwer. Zonder technologie.

Door onze gewoontes en onze drukke agenda’s en gedachtegangen zijn we ons nauwelijks nog bewust van waar we zijn. Het Silent Sky Project is een uitnodiging tot stilte en contemplatie. Op het Ladeuzeplein kunnen mensen, samen met anderen, liggend naar de hemel te kijken. Vanuit je eigen universum kijk je naar een ander … Wat gebeurt er met je? Waar denk je aan? Hoe ervaar je je omgeving? Hoor je de stilte?

Through our daily lives, our busy schedules and thought processes, we are barely conscious of where we are. The Silent Sky Project is an invitation to silence and contemplation. On the Ladeuzeplein in Leuven, a group of people collectively lay down and look at the sky. From our own universe you peer into an other one … What happens to you? Where do your thoughts take you? How do you experience your surroundings? Can you hear the silence?

MAAKT DEEL UIT VAN DE ARTEFACT EXPO / OPENINGSUREN ZIE WWW.ARTEFACT-FESTIVAL.BE GRATIS De installatie Inward Practice toont een stuntpiloot die zijn vluchtroutine probeert te internaliseren. Hij gebruikt zijn lichaam als vliegtuig, en memoriseert fysiek de routine door het nabootsen van de verschillende loops, spins en tuimelingen. Net zoals heel wat choreografen en dansers, gebruiken stuntpiloten een notitiesysteem om hun vluchtpatronen te schetsen en over hun bewegingen in de lucht te communiceren.

The installation Inward Practice focuses on the attempt of an aerobatics pilot to internalize his flight routine. Using his body as an aircraft, his training is directed towards his muscle memory of the various loops, spins and rolls. Similar to choreographers and dancers, aerobatics pilots use a shorthand system to sketch their flight patterns and to communicate about their movement through the air.

We vertrekken vanuit onze vroegste herinneringen. Welk liedje zongen we in onze jeugd? Hoe dansten we? En welke gevoelens kwamen daarbij kijken? We onderzoeken of we controle kunnen hebben op onze herinneringen en onze bewegingen, maar durven we die ook loslaten?

Naar aanleiding van de voorstelling Rauw van Kabinet K, nodigen we choreografe Joke Laureyns uit. Zij werkt op een speelse manier rond lichaamsbesef. Als link naar de voorstelling brengt zij ook boeken en materiaal mee en vertelt ze over de inspiratiebronnen om Rauw te maken.

We start with our earliest memories. What song did we sing in our youth? How did we dance? What feelings did that involve? We investigate whether or not we can control our memories and movements - and can we let them go?

On the occasion of the dance performance Rauw, we invite choreographer Joke Laureyns. In a playful way she will work around body awareness. She will also bring along books and materials that inspired the creation of Rauw.

CURSUSSEN Al jaar en dag organiseert WISPER, volgens een eigen methodiek, artistieke cursussen voor volwassenen. STUK nodigde WISPER uit als één van de kernpartners voor de uitbouw van een participatief dansprogramma. Het resultaat is een rijke waaier aan cursussen hedendaagse dans in STUK. WISPER have years of experience running artistic course for adults, using unique methods. STUK has invited WISPER to become one of the core partners in developing the participative dance programme. The result is a rich range of contemporary dance courses at STUK. — LUX Basiscursus choreografie (i.s.m. Danspunt): intensief traject begeleid door Sarah Bostoen met gastdocenten Ula Sickle en Ugo Dehaes (start 29/11 – volzet) — Hedendaagse dans: basisreeks met Ilke Teerlinck (start 26/01) — Dansproductie: creatieproces van brainstorm tot voorstelling met Lies Borgermans (start 06/02) — Fysiek theater met Hanna Mampuys (05/03) — Masterclass: Ultima Vez met een ervaren danser van het gezelschap (12/03) Regelmatig wonen cursisten dansvoorstellingen bij in STUK, als onderdeel van de les. Daarnaast krijgen alle danscursisten recht op reductieprijs voor het dansaanbod. Meer info en inschrijven (tot een week voor startdatum) kan via www.wisper.be/dans.

Het Departement Culturele Studies van de KU Leuven en STUK richten samen het vak ‘Hedendaagse dans: theorie en analyse’ in. De studenten worden er ingewijd in de belangrijkse tendenzen van de hedendaagse dans. Na een grondige inleiding over hedendaagse dans in de 20ste en 21ste eeuw volgt een capita selecta met verschillende gastdocenten. Er worden verbindingen gelegd met de programmatie in STUK: studenten wonen een selectie van voorstellingen, nagesprekken en lezingen met vertegenwoordigers van het veld bij. Een aantal van deze activiteiten zijn publiek toegankelijk (voertaal: Engels). The Cultural Studies department of the KU Leuven offers the course ‘Contemporary dance : theory and analysis’, which will be lectured at STUK. Students are initiated in contemporary dance’s most important tendencies, with a special focus on certain topical questions in dance theory. After a thorough introduction on contemporary dance in the 20th and 21st century, several guest lecturers will give capita selecta. There lectures will be linked with STUK’s programme: students will attend a selection of performances, after talks and lectures with representatives of the dance scene. I.S.M. FABULEUS, MOOSS, WISPER, VZW STRAATRIJK Dag van de Dans is een nieuw initiatief dat hedendaagse dans meer bemind wil maken bij het brede publiek. Op 23 april zetten talloze organisaties in Vlaanderen en Brussel dans in de kijker. Ook STUK wordt helemaal omgetoverd tot een danshuis. Wat je in STUK kan beleven wordt begin 2016 bekend gemaakt, maar reken op een rijk programma met voorstellingen, battles, een open podium, workshops en een dance karaoke voor jong en oud. Nieuwsgierige bezoekers kunnen hun eerste danspassen zetten onder professionele begeleiding, maar ook de meer ervaren dansliefhebber zal uitgedaagd worden. Dag van de Dans is a new initiative that wants to introduce contemporary dance to the general public. On April 23, countless organizations in Flanders and Brussels will focus on dance. STUK will announce its programme early 2016, but it will definitely be a diverse mix of performances, battles, workshops, a dance karaoke, dance films for all ages. Curious visitors can put their first steps guided by profs, but also the more experienced dance lover will be challenged. RESIDENTIEWEEK 19 & 20 MEI — STUK

Dag in dag uit zijn er in STUK artiesten aan het werk. Sommigen zetten hun eerste stappen als maker, anderen hebben al een oeuvre uitgebouwd. De aanwezigheid van diverse artistieke stemmen en generaties en van ideeën die vorm krijgen is iets dat we koesteren in STUK. Aan het einde van het seizoen bundelen we een aantal voorstellingen die hier in huis (mee) tot stand zijn gekomen. Wellicht namen die nog niet bekend in de oren klinken, maar die je absoluut moet ontdekken. Voor deze eerste editie brengen we kunstenaars samen die op het snijvlak van dans, muziek en geluid werken. Day in day out artists are working in STUK. Some of them are only just starting, others have already established an entire oeuvre. The presence of these artistic voices and generations and of the shaping of their ideas is something we dearly cherish. At the end of the season we bring toghether some of the performances that were (partly) made in STUK. Names that maybe doensn’t yet ring a bell, but absolutely worth discovering.
