STUK, EEN HUIS VOOR DANS
Terwijl deze brochure bij tropische temperaturen vorm krijgt, gonst het al van de artistieke bedrijvigheid in STUK. In de studio’s leggen onder meer Claire Croizé en Etienne Guilloteau, Jan Martens en tout petit de laatste hand aan hun nieuwe creatie. De start van een nieuw seizoen blijft ieder jaar een spannend moment. Je probeert het zo goed mogelijk voor te bereiden, maar je kan het nooit helemaal vastgrijpen. Vaak is het precies dat ongrijpbare dat het programma zijn kleur en glans geeft: een ander perspectief, een onverwachte ervaring. Het dansprogramma is dit najaar uitgesproken internationaal gekleurd. Zo nodigen we in samenwerking met Europalia de Indonesische choreograaf Eko Supriyanto uit en brengen we met het platform Monsoon lokale en Indonesische kunstenaars samen voor een interculturele dialoog. We kijken niet enkel over de culturele grenzen, maar nodigen ook werk uit dat aan de grenzen van de disciplines morrelt: Alexander Vantournhout en Bauke Lievens verknopen hedendaagse dans met circus en in samenwerking met Straatrijk biedt STUK een platform voor jong werk met wortels in de urban dancescene. Het festival Playground brengt voor de 11de keer spannende performances in het spanningsveld tussen podium en beeldende kunst. Het jonge, experimentele werk van Florentina Holzinger en Matthias Ringgenberg doorbreekt en herdenkt dan weer de normatieve grenzen van gender en identiteit. In een wereld die steeds sneller in beweging is, hebben we tegelijk nood aan houvast. We zien in de kunsten een toenemende aandacht voor rituelen en ceremonies die de grote levensmomenten markeren. De choreografen Etienne Guilloteau & Claire Croizé en Grace Ellen Barkey gaan aan de slag met het thema rouw, verlies en dood. Ze halen inspiratie uit de donkere kant van het leven maar plaatsen daartegenover de vitaliteit en de helende kracht van de dans. Ook het contemplatief werk van Meg Stuart & Tim Etchells en Mette Edvardsen nodigt uit om te pauzeren in een wereld in overdrive. Met eenvoudige middelen scheppen zij ruimte voor verbeelding. Dat is ook de motor van het familiefestival Rode Hond. Nieuwe perspectieven bieden we niet alleen via voorstellingen. Aan de hand van inleidende workshops, nagesprekken en dansbattles bouwt STUK aan een actieve danscommunity. As this brochure is being brought together during tropical temperatures, STUK is already abuzz with activity. In the studios, Claire Croizé & Etienne Guilloteau, Jan Martens, and tout petit are completing their new creations and the whole STUK team is making final preparations. Every year, the start of the season is an exciting period. You try to prepare for it as well as you can, but you can never fully grasp it. But that intangible aspect gives the necessary extra spice to the programme: a different perspective, an unexpected experience. The dance programme has a strong international outlook this autumn. In cooperation with Europalia, we invite the Indonesian choreographer Eko Supriyanto. With Monsoon we bring local and Indonesian artists together for an intercultural dialogue. Beyond exploring cultural boundaries, we present work that blurs the boundaries of disciplines. Alexander Vantournhout and Bauke Lievens entwine contemporary dance with circus. Through intensive collaboration with Straatrijk, STUK offers a platform for younger work with roots in the urban dance scene. The eleventh Playground festival presents compelling performances that their cue from the stage and the visual arts. The young, experimental work of Florentina Holzinger and Matthias Ringgenberg breaks through and commemorates the normative boundaries of gender and identity. We need guidance in a world moving increasingly faster. The arts increasingly focus on rituals and ceremonies marking life’s special moments. Choreographers Etienne Guilloteau & Claire Croizé and Grace Ellen Barkey will work with the theme of mourning, loss, and death. They take inspiration from contrasting the dark side of life with the vitality and healing power of dance. The contemplative work of Meg Stuart & Tim Etchells and Mette Edvardsen invites you to pause in a world in overdrive. They create space for imagination through an economy of means. The imagination is also the driving force behind the performances for our younger audience during the Rode Hond family festival. We not only offer new perspectives through performance. Through activities such as introductory workshops, discussions, and dance battles, STUK is building an active dance community. N Imagine Moving Rocks is een levensgroot gezelschapsspel voor een kleine groep mensen die elkaar van ver of nabij kennen. Een gids en een geluidsband leiden hen langs een parcours van acties, waarnemingen en verschillende groepsopstellingen. Wat ontstaat is een choreografie van beelden, een esthetische ervaring die zorgt voor een symbolische en poëtische lading. Een verstillende ervaring van samenhorigheid voor collega’s of vrienden. E Imagine Moving Rocks is a life-size board game for groups who know each other from near or afar: families, friends, neighbours, colleagues, acquaintances. A guide and an audio track lead participants through various group dynamics, physical movements, and individual perspectives. What emerges is a choreography of imagery: an aesthetic experience giving rise to a symbolic, abstract, estranging, and poetic charge.

N Zodra het doek opengaat word je meegesleept in een onzekere wereld. Zijn
we beland op een begrafenis of op de heropvoering ervan in een opnamestudio? Wie is de moeder? Is ze überhaupt aanwezig? Vanuit het rouwen om een afwezige moeder gaan de spelers het ruimere idee van ‘gemis’ injecteren in het hier en nu, met beweging, dans en een tekst die laveert tussen bevattelijk en mysterieus. Moeder is het tweede deel van de trilogie: Vader (2014) – Moeder – Kinderen (2019). E Have we arrived at a funeral or to a re-enactment of one in a recording studio? Who is the mother? Is she even there? Drawing from the sense of grief felt in a mother’s passing, the performers build a broader impression of ‘lacking’ in the here and now through movement, dance, and text, navigating between the comprehensible and the mysterious. Moeder is both funny and estranging, disturbing but also surprisingly recognisable. Moeder is the second part of a trilogy Vader (2014) – Moeder – Kinderen (2019).

N Mer- is een stuk voor vijf dansers en vijf zangers, geïnspireerd op requiem-muziek over dood, verdriet en pijn uit de renaissance-periode. Marnix De Cats Pluto-ensemble, gespecialiseerd in oude muziek, verzorgt de live uitvoering. De titel verwijst tegelijk naar de IndoEuropese wortels van ‘mourir’, het Franse woord voor sterven, en naar de zee of ‘la mer’. De zee als metafoor voor de dood, die het idee van iets ‘voorbij’ de einder met zich meedraagt, een gevoel van grenzeloosheid en mysterie dat eigen is aan de dood. E Mer- is a performance for five dancers and five singers, based on requiems and other musical forms from the renaissance period dedicated to death, sorrow and pain. Marnix De Cat’s Pluto-ensemble play the live musical score. The title Mer- is derived from the Indo-European roots of mourir, the French word for ‘to die’. It also refers to the sea: la mer. The sea is a metaphor for death: an entity embodying that which is ‘beyond’ the horizon, a sense of infiniteness, mystery, and the unknown of death. NAGESPREK

N PRICE – Where do you want to go today houdt het midden tussen een popalbum en een performance. We zien een figuur die gevoelens van desoriëntatie, instabiliteit, angst en een worsteling met liefde en relaties oproept. Tegenover het glamoureuze sterrendom waarin social media en zichtbaarheid een steeds grotere rol spelen, zet hij een zonderlinge, anonieme en een ongrijpbare identiteit. E This performance is a cross between a pop album and performance. We see a figure enacting feelings of disorientation, instability, fear, and his struggles with love and relationships. Contrasting glamorous stardom, whereby social media and visibility play an increasingly dominant role, he stages a strange, anonymous, and elusive identity.

N In 2008 creëerden Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker en Alain Franco Zeitung waarin het choreografisch en muzikaal materiaal inhaakte op vragen rond compositie, improvisatie en tijdsbeleving. Het resultaat was een voorstelling op muziek van Bach, Webern en Schönberg. De nieuwe voorstelling Zeitigung zal deze bronnen herzien en herinterpreteren. Op vraag van De Keersmaeker en Franco voegt Louis Nam Le Van Ho, recent afgestudeerd aan P.A.R.T.S., zijn interpretatie toe. E In 2008 Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Alain Franco produced the work Zeitung; its choreographic and musical material raising questions about composition, improvisation and the perception of time. The new performance Zeitigung reviews and reinterprets these sources. E DansBaAR is a unique dance and party concept. Trios of different dance styles compete with each other in an original 3on3 battle. Battle-experienced breakdancers share the floor with dancers trained in various styles such as ballet, modern, twerking, tap dance, new style hiphop … It produces surprising confrontations and cross pollinations, but above all it is an evening of dancing pleasure.
N DansBaAR is een uniek dans- en partyconcept. Trio’s van verschillende dansstijlen nemen het tegen elkaar op in een originele 3on3 battle. Breakdancers met hopen battle- ervaring delen de vloer met dansers die getraind zijn in diverse dansstijlen zoals ballet, modern, twerking, tapdans, newstyle hiphop … Het levert verrassende confrontaties en kruisbestuivingen op maar bovenal een avond waar het dansplezier vanaf spat.

E licht! is a performance about the movement of light. During licht! young and old discover a world of nuances of light: the glow of a torch, the brightness of a spotlight, and a mirror’s reflected light; each radiates a different atmosphere. The performance teases your senses and imagination. At the end of the performance you can also experiment with light and shadow.
N licht! is een woordeloze danstheatervoorstelling over bewegend licht. In licht! kan jong en oud kennismaken met de vele nuances van licht: het schemerlicht van een zaklamp, het felle licht van een grote spot en het reflecterende licht van een spiegel. Aan het eind kan je zelf te experimenteren met licht en schaduw.

E Léopold is sent to the countryside to get some fresh air. He arrives at Mamie Ronce, a children-hating old lady. Every morning, Mamie Ronce looks at her favorite soap, the rest of the time she works energetically in her garden. Leopold must help her pick the blackberry bushes. But he hears someone grin and … stings himself.
N Léopold wordt naar het platteland gestuurd om een frisse neus te halen. Hij komt er terecht bij Mamie Ronce, een oude dame die een hekel heeft aan kinderen en alleen woont met haar hond. Wanneer hij haar helpt om bramen te plukken, hoort hij een grijns en … prikt hij zich.

E Playground #11 again features a selection of unique performances by artists who think beyond the boundaries of disciplines. In their practice, they combine elements of installation, text, film, sculpture, and choreography. In compelling performances that occupy an area between the stage and the visual arts, objects and bodies combine to create new sculptures that reflect on art and the world.
N Playground #11 brengt opnieuw een selectie unieke performances van kunstenaars die over de disciplines heen denken. Zij combineren in hun praktijk elementen uit installatie, tekst, film, sculptuur of choreografie. In spannende performances in het veld tussen podium en beeldende kunst brengen ze objecten en lichamen samen en creëren ze nieuwe beelden die reflecteren over kunst en de wereld.

N In Of Balls, Books and Hats analyseert Julien Previeux hoe de skills van intelligente machines alsmaar toenemen doordat ze autonoom de eigen competenties perfectioneren op basis van data. Previeux neemt dit als vertrekpunt voor een choreografie. Een performer vertolkt experimenten die ‘machine learning’ illustreren: een nieuw soort slavenarbeid die lijkt op een absurd en kinderachtig spel. Met zijn nieuwe voorstelling volatile substances zet Julian Weber zijn onderzoek naar de traditionele Japanse theeceremonie verder. Een confrontatie van hedendaagse choreografie en oude Oost-Aziatische tradities stelt lichamelijke handelingen centraal. Beeldend kunstenaar Fabrice Samyn maakt zijn debuut in de podiumkunsten met A Breath cycle, een gevarieerde verzameling performances over ademhalen. Alle creaties vertrekken vanuit eenzelfde protocol, richtlijnen voor performers en publiek. Laat je in vervoering brengen door deze levendige en woordloze verbeelding van ons in- en uitademen.

E Of Balls, Books and Hats is Julien Previeux’s analysis of the ever increasing skills of intelligent machines that autonomously perfect their own data-based competences. Previeux takes this as a starting point for his choreography, in which a performer interprets experiments that illustrate ‘machine learning’: a new kind of slave labour that resembles an absurd, childish game. Volatile Substances, Julian Weber’s new performance, continues his research into the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. A confrontation of contemporary choreography and ancient East Asian traditions, which focuses on physical actions. Artist Fabrice Samyn makes his debut in the stage arts with his A Breath Cycle, a varied collection of performances about breathing. All creations depart from the same protocol: guidelines for performers and audiences. Be enraptured by this vivid and wordless representation of breathing.

E Jailolo, situated on one of Indonesia’s Maluku Islands, is known as one of the greatest diving spots in the world; however, its natural beauty is also under threat from climate change. Both the local community and the marine life inspired Eko Supriyanto’s new creation. Compelling rhythms leading a menacing soundtrack are alternated with expressive solos: as beautiful and as rich as coral life itself.
N Jailolo, gelegen in de Indonesische Molukken, is bekend als een van de grootste duikplekken ter wereld maar tegelijk dreigt die natuurpracht te verdwijnen door door de klimaatsverandering. Zowel de leefgemeenschap als het waterleven inspireerde choreograaf Eko Supriyanto voor deze creatie. Strakke ritmes op een dreigende soundtrack worden afgewisseld met expressieve solo’s; net zo mooi en zo rijk als het koraalleven zelf.

E For Balabala, Eko Supriyanto works with five expressive dancers from Maluku. Through slow, rhythmic movement patterns they create a piercing depiction of strength. They each strive to carve a women’s space for potential and creation. Inspired by the nine directions of the Pencak Silat (martial arts) philosophy, the dancers express the different roles of women in Indonesia. A powerful performance with a commanding female (dance) force.
N Voor Balabala gaat Eko Supriyanto aan de slag met vijf Indonesische danseressen uit de Molukken. Met trage, ritmische bewegingspatronen verbeelden ze haarscherp de notie ‘kracht’. Elk trachten ze op hun manier een ruimte te creëren die plaats biedt aan vrouwen en waar ‘potentie’ en ‘creatie’ centraal staan. In hun dans geven de danseressen uiting aan de verschillende rollen voor de vrouw in Indonesië. Een straffe voorstelling met straffe vrouwelijke (dans)kracht.

E Choreographer Benjamin Vandewalle and composer Yoann Durant are looking for volunteers for the performance Hear. Together, you will form a choir and give the blindfolded audience an exceptional experience. Basic physical fitness, mobility, and minimal voice control are the only requirements. You certainly don’t need to be a trained dancer or singer!

N Het is geen geheim dat de kunsten vandaag meer dan ooit hybride zijn. In de fricties tussen dans, beeld en geluid onstaan vaak de interessantse projecten. Alvast twee aanraders uit het programma beeld en geluid. E It is no secret that the arts are more hybride than ever. In the frictions, between dance, image and sound interesting projects often appear. Therefore, here are two highlights of the programmes image and sound.

EXPO OMER FAST APPENDIX N Omer Fast (°1972) is één van de meest intrigerende stemmen in het landschap tussen beeldende kunst en film. In zijn veelal filmisch werk speelt hij met de relatie tussen fictie en realiteit, verhaalconstructie, lineariteit en vertelperspectief, en gaat hij aan de hand van persoonlijke verhalen dieper in op thema’s zoals trauma en conflict. Deze presentatie in STUK is zijn eerste solotentoonstelling in België. E Omer Fast (°1972) is arguably one of the most intriguing voices in the current landscape bridging film and visual arts. In his mostly filmic work, he plays with the relation between reality and fiction, construction of narrative, linearity and story perspective, and tackles topics such as trauma and conflict through the personal stories of the characters involved. This presentation in STUK is his first solo exhibition in Belgium. GELUID
