STUK, EEN HUIS VOOR DANS NL STUK zet het jaar meteen stevig in met de premièrereeks van RATS, de nieuwe dansproductie van fABULEUS. Choreograaf Ugo Dehaes confronteert de energie van 7 jonge urban dansers met die van een hedendaagse danseres. Er vindt geen botsing plaats, maar eerder een wederzijdse besmetting. Van daaruit ontstaat een verrassende, nieuwe danstaal. Hoe kunnen we met een open blik met elkaar in dialoog gaan en tot nieuwe inzichten komen? Het is een cruciale vraag op een moment waarop de wereld sterk verdeeld is en we via sociale media in een soort echokamer van het eigen grote gelijk zijn beland.

In tijden van ‘post-truth’ is het belangrijk om vragen te blijven stellen, samen te komen en het blikveld te verruimen. Het theater is misschien wel één van de weinige plekken waar dit nog mogelijk is. In het dansprogramma van dit voorjaar kan je enkele belangwekkende dansproducties ontdekken die vertrekken vanuit de kracht van menselijke relaties. In THE COMMON PEOPLE brengt Jan Martens 48 Leuvense amateurs samen die elkaar voor het eerst zullen ontmoeten op de scène. De kwetsbaarheid en de schoonheid van die ontmoetingen is een antidotum voor de vluchtigheid van menselijk contact. In de erg fysieke dansvoorstelling Horses leggen Kwint Manshoven en Joke Laureyns de complexiteit van ouder-kind- relaties bloot. Lisbeth Gruwez zoomt in We’re pretty fuckin’ far from okay dan weer in op de fysieke impact van de angstcultuur die binnensijpelt in ons doen en laten. EN STUK starts the year in solid fashion with the premiere of RATS, the latest dance production from fABULEUS. The choreo grapher Ugo Dehaes brings the energy of 7 young urban dancers into a face-off with that of a contemporary dancer. Rather than a clash, a mutual contamination takes place that gives rise to a new, surprising dance form. How can we enter dialogue with an open mind and come to new insights with one another? This is a crucial question in a time when the world is heavily divided and through means of social media we find ourselves in a kind of echo chamber that only bolsters our own particular worldview.

STUK, A HOUSE FOR DANCE this power. His choreography is distilled and abstract, though the images of street protests are never far away. Alongside our focus on a new generation of choreographers, we also continue to closely follow the repertoire of our more established artists: Rain by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, In Spite of Wishing and Wanting by Wim Vandekeybus and Babel (words) by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. These three dance performances have acquired cult status with their irresistible energy, without losing an ounce of their power. Don’t miss the opportunity to (re) discover these performances.

In these post-truth times, it’s important to continue posing these questions, to meet with one another and widen our views. The theatre is perhaps one of the few places where this is still possible. Through our dance programme this spring you can discover several engaging dance productions about the power of human relations. In THE COMMON PEOPLE, Jan Martens brings together 48 amateurs from Leuven who will meet for the first time on stage. The fragility and beauty of these encounters acts as an antidote for the transience of human connection. In the intensely physical dance performance Horses, Kwint Manshoven and Joke Laureyns unravel the complex relations between parent and child. In We’re pretty fuckin’ far from okay Lisbeth Gruwez zooms in on the physical impact of our fear culture as it seeps into our everyday actions. Embodying something both fascinating and disturbing, Daniel Linehan engages with the rhythms of sound poetry and the movements of a march in Dbddbb. EN In Sketches on Scarlatti David Hernandez creates a full-length performance based on Domenico Scarlatti’s sonatas for harp. Two men and a woman meet in different situations and investigate every possible configuration. Among his inspirations for the work, David Hernandez had a special interest in silent films. The result is a surprisingly playful choreography that is sure to stimulate the imagination of the spectator.

‘Babel is van het beste wat je dezer dagen op onze podia kunt zien.’ — DE MORGEN NL Babel onderzoekt de relatie tussen enerzijds taal en anderzijds nationaliteit, identiteit en religie. Op de scène verwijzen drie reusachtige structuren naar een naamloos kruispunt in een gezichtsloze stad in de toekomst, nabij de grens met een niemandsland. We zien de actie vloeien van intiem naar extravert en van individu naar collectief terwijl keuzes van geloof, ruimte en samenleving zich opdringen.

VOORSTELLINGEN

Scarlatti. Twee mannen en een vrouw treffen elkaar in verschillende situaties waarin elke mogelijke relatie van twee wordt onderzocht. Voor deze creatie vond David Hernandez zijn inspiratie onder meer in stomme films. Het resultaat is een verrassend speelse choreografie die de fantasie van de toeschouwer prikkelt.

EN Taking the parable of the tower of Babel as a starting point, the gigantic threedimensional structures by Gormley hint at a nameless intersection in a faceless future city, near the border of no man’s land. We watch as the action flows from intimate to extrovert, and individual to collective – while the choices of faith, space and community are made and we are reminded that for some the tale of Babel represents the gateway to enlightenment, while for others it leads towards chaos, confusion and conflict.

NL Na een indrukwekkende passage vorig seizoen met d’Après une histoire vraie, verdiept Christian Rizzo zich verder in de folkdans. Hiervoor put hij onder meer inspiratie uit het uitgebreide repertoire van ‘ballroom dansen’. In Ad Noctum brengt hij twee iconische performers samen: Julie Guibert en Kerem Gelebek. De derde protagonist is een totem / monoliet van licht, geluid en beeld. Christian Rizzo verbindt de essentie van het dansen opnieuw met een gelaagde geluidsscore en een compositie van trillend licht.

NL In Ah!Oh! A contemporary ritual bevinden de dansers zich in een post-apocalyptische wereld. Of is het een Berlijnse club? Op expressieve wijze roepen de dansers de herinnering op van samendansen en menselijk contact. Hun bewegingen zijn schatplichtig zijn aan de traditie van het cirkeldansen. Een imposant lichtobject onthult flarden van een gemeenschap die ooit verbonden was. De Griekse Kat Válastur werkt met lichaamspraktijken die gebaseerd zijn op energiestromen en lichaamsbewustzijn. Deze voorstelling maakt deel uit van Artefactfestival dat in 2017 in het teken staat van The Act of Magic.

Through expressive movements, they try to locate themselves by evoking memories of dancing together and human contact. Their movements play with the tradition of the circle dance, while an imposing lighting design reveals fragments of a community that was once connected. Greek choreographer Kat Válastur works from bodily practices based on energy flow and awareness. This performance is part of the 2017 Artefact Festival, under the theme The Act of Magic.

EN In 1999, Wim Vandekeybus’ repertoire received much acclaim for its intense physical and poetic quality. With In Spite of Wishing and Wanting he took the radical decision to work with an all-male cast. The power of the performance is in the organic symbiosis between dance, theatre and film. Spellbinding dance sequences, supported by David Byrne’s sensual soundtrack, flow into monologues about fear, longing for a sense of security, and the (terrifying) magic of sleep. NL In La Esclava probeert een vrouw, gefascineerd door zichzelf en gefocust op haar erfenis, haar eigen geschiedenis op te graven en zich ervan los te maken. EN In La Esclava a woman, fascinated by herself and fixated by her heritage, attempts to unearth her own history and detach herself from it. At a crossroads between vulnerability and self-confidence, control and chaos, this ‘esclava’ tries to find the right footing in a chaotic stream of thoughts and emotions, in search of the imaginary but necessary way to let go.

EN Rain (2001) is one of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s most vibrant performances, set to Music for 18 Musicians by Steve Reich. ‘Hoe een klank soms meer kan zeggen dan duizend woorden.’ — DE STANDAARD NL In dbddbb stappen vijf dansers op eenzelfde ritme, terwijl ze samen klankpoëzie opzeggen. Op het ritme van een mars bouwt Daniel Linehan een ingenieuze choreografie gedreven door één regel: elke stap wordt gevolgd door een nieuwe. Linehan definieert de mars als ‘een manier om tijd te meten met het lichaam’. De ‘mars’ is niet enkel een militaire oefening, maar kan ook een politiek protest of sport en spel zijn. Dbddbb toont het plezier en de gevaren van de krachten die ons verbinden met een groep.

Het duet focust op de relatie tussen angst en ademhaling, zowel in de dans als de muziek. De ademhaling als onbewuste impuls, die ook gecontroleerd kan worden.

EN In Daniel Linehan’s new creation dbddbb five dancers step to the same rhythm while they recite sound poetry together. In this marching rhythm, Linehan builds up an ingenious choreography with one rule: each step must be followed by another. Linehan defines the march as ‘a way to measure time with the body. The ‘march’ isn’t just a military exercise. It can also be a political protest, a form of sport or play, a ritualistic incantation or a dance party. We’re pretty fuckin’ far from okay isn’t a political or sociological account of anxiety in our society, but shows what prolonged exposure to distress can do to our bodies. Fear isn’t a cultural construct but an evolutionary response. We start to sweat, our heartbeat and breath starts to quicken. Our body is preparing for the vital decision: fight, flight or freeze?

EN THE COMMON PEOPLE is a participating workshop, installation and performance rolled into one. With THE COMMON PEOPLE choreographer Jan Martens and film director Lukas Dhont develop a series of duets and an installation with 48 residents from Leuven. The leitmotiv is the lives of unknown fellow city dwellers, privacy versus exhibitionism and the narration of everyday life. The result is a performance that reclaims theatre as a place for encounters, person to person. The necessity to feel connected to others in our society is becoming increasingly important. Social networks pave the way for individualism and loneliness. THE COMMON PEOPLE brings people together in a more human way, intense and intimate, with physical contact, one to one. You will see 24 duets between people who have never met before. With your ticket you can freely walk in and out of the venue to discover the installation that unveils the digital identity of the participants.

NL Na het zeer succesvolle GIRLS (2013) werkt Ugo Dehaes opnieuw bij fABULEUS met een groep jongeren. Deze keer zet hij een aantal drones, een volwassen hedendaagse danseres en zeven jonge urban dansers tegenover elkaar. Ze draaien om elkaar heen. Ze observeren, kopiëren, dagen elkaar uit. Solo’s en battles versmelten tot groepsdansen. Bewegingen botsen of gaan viraal. Verschillende werelden schuren langs elkaar heen en op het raakvlak ontstaat een nieuwe danstaal.

NL Horses is een dansvoorstelling met een ontembare energie, waarin vijf jonge kinderen en vijf volwassenen elkaar ontmoeten. Horses gaat over groot willen zijn en over kind willen blijven, over macht en kwetsbaarheid, over dragen en gedragen worden. Over het aftasten vòòr de overgave, het zoeken naar wie de touwtjes in handen heeft, het vinden van de cadans. Horses is in zijn gelaagdheid een voorstelling voor zowel volwassenen als voor kinderen vanaf 8 jaar.

EN After successfully collaborating with fABULEUS for GIRLS (2013), Ugo Dehaes works with a group of young people again in RATS. This time he opposes a couple of drones, an adult contemporary female dancer and seven young urban dancers. They twist around each other. They observe, copy and challenge each other. Solos and battles merge into group dances. Movements collide or go viral. Different worlds discover each other’s edges, from which a new dance language originates.

EN Horses is a dance performance with untameable energy, in which five children and five adults meet. Horses is about wanting to be grown-up and wanting to remain a child, about power and vulnerability, about carrying and being carried. About sensing a situation before surrendering oneself, sussing out who’s got a hold of the reins, and finding a cadence. Through its layered quality, Horses is a performance for both adults and children from age 8 upwards.

STUK will be transformed into a dance house where you can have a taste from contemporary dance. The highlight on 30th April will be the OPEN STAGE where we invite dancers from Leuven and beyond to perform a choreography or short intervention. Are you a member of a dance school or a crew, or do you simply enjoy dancing in your spare time? Have you always dreamed of conquering the STUK stage?
