Benny Claessens wil mensen de kans geven om te ademen, om de tijd te nemen en de dingen weer helder te zien. In zijn onnavolgbare stijl brengt hij een performance die betekenisloos probeert te zijn. Hij plaatst de nutteloosheid van de kunst naast de nutteloosheid van het leven en neemt haar welverdiende tijd. EN Hello useless – for W and friends is a solo performance about standing still. Benny Claessens aims to offer a moment to breathe and take the time to look at things again with fresh eyes. It attempts to be meaningless. Without words and without knowledge. THE MEGAPHONE ENSEMBLE WO 28 SEP — 16:00 — LEUVEN CENTRUM & — 22:00 — STUK BINNENPLEIN NL Hoe klinkt het STUKgebouw? Het gebouw krijgt een eigen stem gevormd door echo’s, resonantie, feedback, ondertonen en vibraties. De akoestische dynamiek van de ruimte wordt vervreemd door de klanken die doorheen de ruimte worden gekatapulteerd. The Megaphone Ensemble is een geluidsperformance op maat van het STUKgebouw. Gewapend met een megafoon en een walkietalkie stuurt iedere muzikant het geluid van de anderen aan. Elk hoekje klinkt anders. Zo krijgt iedereen zijn eigen STUK(je)gebouw te horen. Benieuwd hoe het buiten de muren van STUK klinkt? In de namiddag doet The Megaphone Ensemble al een warm-up in de stad.

EN What does the STUK building sound like? The space has its own voice formed through the echoes, resonance, feedback, undertones and vibrations. The acoustic dynamics of a space become estranged from their origins as they splinter through openings and passages. The Megaphone Ensemble is a custom-made sound performance for the STUK building. Each musician has a megaphone and a walkie-talkie with which they can direct the sound of the others. The reverberations of every corner of the building sound different depending on where you stand as a spectator. Een filmperformance met kinderen (tussen 9 en 11 jaar), voor volwassenen. NL In de donkere Cinema ZED-zaal zit het publiek geblinddoekt. Achter hen zit telkens een rij kinderen waarbij elk kind fluisterend, zoekend naar woorden, een beschrijving geeft van de beelden die geprojecteerd worden. Geruggesteund door de soundtrack van de film beleef je de moedige, fragiele en soms ook grappige poging van deze kinderen om de beelden, die ze voor de eerste keer zien, te beschrijven. Blind Cinema maakt ons bewust van de mogelijkheden en de grenzen van taal en fantasie. Elke film wordt begeleid door een nieuwe groep kinderen van 9 tot 11 jaar. EN A film performance by children, for adults. In the darkness of a cinema space, the audience sits blindfolded. Behind each row of audience members is a row of children who in hushed voices describe a film only they can see. Accompanied by the soundtrack, the whispered descriptions are a fragile, fragmentary and at times struggling but courageous attempt by the children to make sense of what they see projected on the screen for the first time. Blind Cinema makes us aware of the possibilities and limits of language and our imagination.

EN It might sound like a joke, but this is for real. The organisers of the Dutch music festival Incubate thought this plan up; the exact rules for the game will be revealed later, but the contest will be about speed, agility, improv and following the rhythm of a song. All styles – from death metal to jazz – are welcome. A jury of professional drummers will judge the contestants. Through this championship everyone can become a fantastic drummer. NL Ook dit seizoen zetten we de traditie rond ‘guilty pleasures’ – het concept waarbij foute hits in een nieuw kleedje worden gestoken – schaamteloos voort waarbij we de ‘street credibility’ van bands onverbiddelijk en zonder verdoving op het rooster leggen. We geven de fakkel door aan de Gentse noisebelofte Hypochristmutreefuzz (kortweg Hypo), die doet denken aan rare trawanten als The Birthday Party en Evil Superstars, en aan de rauwe punkband Cocaine Piss uit Luik. De uitgebeende punk slaat in als een splinterbom en frontvrouw/brulboei Aurélie Poppins laat je alle hoeken van de kamer zien.

NL Het klinkt als een grap, maar dat is het niet. Bij dit tafeldrumkampioenschap gaat het om snelheid en behendigheid, improvisatie en het nadrummen van een lied. Alle stijlen – van deathmetal tot jazz – zijn welkom. Een volwaardige jury van professionele drummers beoordeelt de kandidaten. Begin alvast te oefenen, smeren die handen … wij zorgen voor de EHBO-stand. Aan dit kampioenschap kan iedereen deelnemen. Word een sterdrummer en schrijf je nu in via www.stuk.be.

EN We go on with the traditional STUK START item around shamelessness ‘Guilty Pleasures’ where the bands’ street credibility is brought on a merciless trial. We now pass the torch to Ghent’s promising noiseband Hypochristmutreefuzz that reminds us of other weirdo’s such as The Birthday Party and Evil Superstars. The music of Liege’s quartet Cocaine Piss is as striking as their bandname. This boneless punk explodes like a cluster bomb and frontlady Aurélie Poppins will drag you and herself around the room!

WO 28, DO 29 & VR 30 SEP — 18:00 - 21:00 — STUK ONTHAAL — GRATIS NL Kunstenaar Kristof Van Gestel zoekt vijftien mensen uit Leuven die van oktober tot mei een kunstwerk uit de reeks Familie willen adopteren en mee naar huis nemen. De deelnemers worden uitgedaagd om het kunstwerk een betekenisvolle plaats in hun leven te geven. Bij aanvang, halfweg en op het einde van het traject (oktober - mei) zijn er ‘familiebijeenkomsten’ met alle deelnemers om ervaringen uit te wisselen. Tijdens STUK START is er een minitentoonstelling in het STUK Onthaal waar je een werk kan kiezen en alle info krijgt die je nodig hebt. EN Artist Kristof Van Gestel is looking for fifteen people from Leuven to adopt and take home one of the sculptures from the series Familie for the duration of the project, from October until May. The participants are invited to give the artwork a meaningful place in their everyday lives. As the project commences, halfway through, and again at the end of the period, the participants are invited to reflect upon their experience in a group discussion. These ‘family meetings’ are moments to exchange experiences. During STUK START there’s a small exhibition in the STUK Reception where you can choose a work and gather any information you need.

Al snel volgen nog veel meer impotente patiënten en Brinkley bouwt met zijn teelballentransplantaties nationale faam én een immens fortuin op. EN Kansas, 1918. The young doctor John Brinkley is presented a remarkable question by one of the farmers in the village: might implanting the testicles of a healthy goat cure him of his impotence? Brinkley rather likes the sound of this outlandish idea and carries out the operation. De drugs laat hij liggen, het geld neemt hij mee. Zo’n smak geld wordt vroeg of laat gemist, dat beseft Llewelyn goed genoeg en dus vertelt hij zijn vrouw dat hij ‘even weg zal zijn’.

NL Geen officiële opening zonder feest! Voor de gelegenheid steken we het STUK STARTFEEST in een nieuw jasje. Dit jaar maar liefst twee feesten in het STUKcafé en een gezellige buitenbar op het STUK Binnenplein. Op woensdag verwelkomen we de Leuvense studenten met de beste dj’s uit Leuven en omstreken. Op vrijdag duiken we met Acapulco Nights de eighties in met dj’s Konny Klanken en Eklektiker. Samen met Exalt zorgen zij voor de soundtrack van de jaren 80. EN No official opening without a party! For the occasion we’re giving new form to the STUK STARTFEEST. This year we’ll throw two parties in the STUKcafé and an outside bar in STUK Binnenplein. On Wednesday we welcome Leuven’s students with the best DJs from Leuven and the surrounding areas. On Friday we dive into the 80s with the Acapulco DJs Konny Klanken and Eklektiker. Together with Exalt, they’ll deliver the ultimate soundtrack of the 80s.
