World Breastfeeding Week with ACS

T

he Family Advocacy Program, part of Army Community Service (ACS), invites you to celebrate the annual World Breastfeeding Week during the first week of August. The celebration is held every year in more than 120 countries with an aim to inform, anchor, and engage action on breastfeeding and related issues, initiated by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action. If you’d like to learn more, sign up to attend our Baby Bumps class (August 11th, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.), our monthly Baby Boot Camp class for expecting parents, or visit our outreach table on August 13th, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Exchange. These are great opportunities to connect with our New Parent Support Program (NPSP) team who will be happy to answer all of your questions.

“Our NPSP is a professional team of nurses and social workers who provide supportive services to military families with young children. We offer home visits, hospital visits, prenatal care, as well as monthly classes and playgroups,” said Kyra Smith, NPSP team social worker. Though breastfeeding can be a wonderful experience for many families, it isn’t always easy. Lactation counseling is one of the supports the NPSP team offers to new families. While breastfeeding your baby is of course not the only option to feed your child, the benefits of breastfeeding include decreased chance of obesity, decreased risk for diabetes and allergies, increased immunities that are passed through the milk and more.
