To Celebrate St Patty’s Day 1. Dublin
St Patrick’s with
OUTDOOR RE
Ireland: The capital and most popular city in Ireland have a lot to live up to each year and always deliver. For the past 15 years Dublin has not only celebrated on March 17, but also the five days leading up to it. Live music, comedy, dance performances and plenty of Guinness will be served up during the nation’s largest celebration. It’s insane, a whole lot of traditional fun and if you live in Europe, it’s an absolute must! Massachusetts: The celebration in Boston begins a full week before St. Patrick’s Day and doesn’t stop until the green beer 2. Boston runs dry. A whopping 15.8% of Boston’s population is made up of Irish or their
descendants. You have to see this day to truly believe it. 850,000 people attend the celebration from all over the world with flying green colors. Nothing comes close!
Georgia: For a city that has half the square mileage of Chicago, Georgia draws in over 300,000 spectators for 3. Savannah a parade that has run for almost 200 years. They have their own dying tradition
where they dye the city fountain green in the morning and cap off the night with Gaelic music, Irish eats and a heck of a good time in what has become one of the largest festivals in the Southeast.
Argentina: St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in very few non-English speaking countries, but exceptions 4. Buenos Aires are Uruguay and Argentina. Argentina has the 5th largest Irish community outside Ireland, thanks to the British invasion of 1806 that consisted primarily of Irish soldiers. More than 50,000 green-clad people are said to have participated in last year’s St. Patrick’s Day street party. Thanks to the mild climate, the party usually carries on well into the following day. The only downside? Guinness costs twice as much as local beers due to import costs.
Illinois: The diverse population provides two parades to choose from for the city-wide celebration. The parade on Columbus 5. Chicago Drive usually draws in the biggest crowd with 350,000 attendees while the south
side Irish parade is more of a community event with 250,000 people. That’s still a huge community! But the most exciting part of the Chicago festivities is the dyeing of an entire river that started a whopping 44 years ago. Old habits “dye” hard.
New York: St Patty’s in NYC dates back to 1762. Their parade features over 150,000 marchers and draws a crowd 6. New York of over one million spectators. It’s truly an unbelievable sight and is said to be almost as claustrophobic as New Years Eve in the big apple.
Pennsylvania: Boasting to hold the nation’s second oldest St. Patrick’s Day parade since 1771, Philly 7. Philadelphia brings in over 500,000 people for a parade that features over 150 groups consisting of marching bands, music dance groups, youth groups, Irish associations, floats, flags and spectators in their green-bedecked finery.
Germany. In general, the Germans don’t fancy Guinness, but trust the Bavarians, they lay off the lager for a day and neck 8. Munich steins of the black stuff at a massive open-air party, parade and dancing through the night in what is known as the largest St Patty’s Day celebration in Europe second to Dublin.
Switzerland: From March 15-16, Outdoor Recreation is taking you on a trip of a lifetime to Interlaken for St. 9. Interlaken Patty’s day weekend! Considered the “Adventure capital of Europe” this thrillfilled weekend includes transportation, lodging in a hostel, breakfast, shuttles, sled run, cheese fondue dinner, and ski bus pass. Activities range from skiing, snowboarding, night sledding, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, ice-climbing, skydiving, glacier bungee jumping, ice-skating, indoor swimming and more!

Kelly Sarles
After being awarded the Recreation Employee of the Year for the Army, we asked this Texas-native mom of two how she crafted her way to the top.
H
ow did you get involved with the Patch Arts & Crafts Center?
I came to Germany fresh out of college and got right to work. I got a job at a little craft store on base called “Gussy Goose.” (Shout out to anyone who remembers the Goose!) I was promoted to Director in 2005 and have been doing that ever since. It was an interesting experience to go from zero military affiliation to working at the European headquarters! I think I adjusted quite well, and have a much greater appreciation about what the military does for the world, and what I can do for the families stationed here.
Has crafting passion?

your
I was a crafty person all my life, but crafting really became a passion for me after joining the Arts and Crafts team here in Stuttgart. Arts and crafts are not just something for kids, but are life-long hobbies and sometimes careers that offer fulfillment and community. What I love so much about this community of artists is the encouragement that is given so freely.
What’s your favorite thing to craft?
Sewing. Sewing. And more sewing! If it involves the sewing machine, I love to do it. I make my own clothes, handbags, and even my backpack! I also do a lot of quilting but the newest thing I’ve enjoyed is our Canvas and Corkscrews program, which has been extremely successful! I never thought I would enjoy acrylic paints but the class can get anyone painting!
What’s one thing the community should know?
I tell my kids all the time, you may not be the one who changes the whole world, but at least make an effort to make the world around you a better place. Stuttgart Arts and Crafts is my little corner of the world where I get to look for ways every day to make someone smile, improve the way we do business, or look for new things to teach people. We work really hard to research and learn techniques to make us better at what we do and want to make sure the Stuttgart Arts and Crafts program is a place that is welcoming and feels like home.

So much went into the award that it’s impossible to pinpoint just one thing. I believe it’s the culmination of years of hard work by all of us on the Arts and Crafts team, not just me.
I would have to say there are three specific things: 1. It has been a long-term goal of mine to make Arts and Crafts a place where EVERYONE feels comfortable. In our old shop we would have men walk in and then RUN out overwhelmed by girliness! It was really important to me that our current shop be inviting to everyone, and I hope we’ve accomplished that. 2. Revamping the way we offer programming was another goal of mine that we accomplished this year. I really wanted to improve the classes that we offer and the class list that we provide our students. With the help of everyone on the team we started offering some really amazing new programs, such as the Tween Night Out program and the wildly popular Canvas and Corkscrews program. We also created a new course catalog that is downloadable from the website as a PDF. 3. My goal from day one of becoming Director was to become self-sufficient. Arts and Crafts is a category B program - meaning we get partial funding. But we are one of the first to lose that funding when budget cuts come. It was very important to me that we become selfsufficient so that one day when we no longer received funding we could stand on our own. We accomplished that goal in 2012, thanks to the incredible support from our community and the hard work from our staff.
