Spotlight on Folsom Lake College: Youth Arts

Folsom Lake College is proud to serve the community as a leader in providing unique opportunities for young people in the visual and performing arts. The college currently is home for a youth chamber orchestra, youth summer arts academy and school time matinee series designed to spark and support a passion for the arts and creative expression among young people in Folsom Lake College’s service area (Rancho Cordova, Folsom, El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Shingle Springs, Placerville and surrounding communities). YOUTH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA The mission of the orchestra is to inspire music appreciation and excellence among children ages 12-18, and increase community awareness of and participation in the musical experiences of the youth. The Orchestra is directed by Dr. Evgeniy Sporov and is comprised of 15-20 young musicians each semester. In addition to earning college credit for participating, each semester is concluded with a concert at the Harris Center for the Arts. YOUTH SUMMER ARTS ACADEMY The Youth Summer Arts Academy is an opportunity for young people ranging in ages 8-18 to experience week long creative programs in Art, Dance, Music and Theatre Arts. New to the curricula this year will include a session on STEAM where students can use design thinking and makerspace tools and techniques to solve problems that blend science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Attendees will have the opportunity to work side by side with professors, master teachers and visiting professional artists. CLASS ACTS SCHOOL TIME MATINEE SERIES Students who actively engage in the arts through a variety of experiences gain multiple benefits that contribute to academic achievement and personal success. With this in mind, the Class Acts School Time Matinee Series is a program designed to both entertain and inspire students through multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary performances. Grants for tickets or transportation are available for qualifying schools. These programs are made possible by support from The Robert S. and Star Pepper Foundation, the County of Sacramento, Harris Center donor members and proceeds from special fundraisers such as the recent Youth Arts Raffle organized by Harris Center volunteers.

Partner Focus: Sacramento Ballet The Sacramento Ballet has been an active community partner of the Harris Center since the Center's opening season in spring 2011. Their Modern Masters programs featuring the work of contemporary choreographers are spectacular in the venue's intimate setting and have been met with thunderous applause. The Sacramento Ballet was founded in 1954 through the efforts and leadership of Barbara and Deane Crockett. During Ms. Crockett’s tenure as Company Director, The Sacramento Ballet gained n a t i o n a l re co g n i t i o n a s one of the finest regional arts companies. Through community support, the formation of the Ballet Guild, and grants from the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, California Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ballet was able to grow and begin to hire a resident company of professional dancers. In 1986, having accomplished her goal of making The Sacramento Ballet a professional company, Ms. Crockett retired as the Company Director. In 1988 Ron Cunningham was engaged as Artistic Director, and was joined by his wife Carinne Binda the following year. The two became Co-Artistic Directors in 1991, and through their vision and leadership, the company has enjoyed substantial success and is widely recognized as a leading arts organization in Sacramento. The Sacramento Ballet is well known for Cunningham’s world premieres of such works as Carmina Burana, The Rite of Spring, Bolero, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream as well as the classics, including The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, A Streetcar Named Desire and Hamlet. In 20 seasons, the Ballet has added 15 full-length ballets, 18 Balanchine masterworks, 40 Sacramento premieres, and 38 world premieres. The company is highly regarded as a cultural asset to the community and consistently receives outstanding reviews for its artistic quality.

The Sacramento Ballet recently announced the appointment of Ms. Amy Seiwert as its next Artistic Director, beginning in 2018-19 Season. Her national reputation, award-winning choreography, and deep roots in the company make her an excellent fit for the role. She has an artistic vision that can build on the company’s strategic plans to bring growth to the company and foster a deep engagement with the Sacramento community. Barbara Crockett, founder of the Sacramento Ballet, says “Amy is a natural choice to succeed Ron and Carinne Cunningham. Her years of experience in Sacramento will serve as a solid foundation for her leadership of the Ballet.” Now a noted choreographer with work performed by companies across the country, Amy earlier enjoyed a nineteen-year performing career with the Smuin Ballet, LA Chamber Ballet and Sacramento Ballet where s he dance d from 19 9 1 1999. Seiwert lauds Ron and Carinne Binda Cunningham, as “part of my artistic DNA. The aesthetic choices that inform my choreographic style took root during my time with Sacramento Ballet” where Ron and Carinne provided Seiwert multiple opportunities to develop her choreographic talents. This spring the Sacramento Ballet will present Modern Masters: Red Hot, May 11, 2018 - May 13, 2018 at the Harris Center for the Arts. The selections included are Blood Rush, Ma Cong’s visceral dance set to the sizzling music of Latin composer Astor Piazzola, defining the word hot!; Ron Cunningham’s Bolero which perfectly captures the relentless drive of Ravel’s pulsating music; and Fluctuating Hemlines, a witty, urbane, sophisticated, and deliciously irreverent piece where 1960s fashion collides with 21st century morés.

James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash Saturday, January 13, 2018; 7:30 pm Sunday, January 14, 2018; 2 pm James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash with special Guests Tara Cash, Gene Beley and Dan Poush Johnny Cash in front of Folsom Prison by Dan Poush on January 13, 1968.

This weekend, we think back to a concert recorded 50 years ago on January 13, 1968, an extraordinary musical event that changed the course of American music: Johnny Cash's concert for the inmates of Folsom State Prison. Backed by The Tennessee Three – Luther Perkins, Marshall Grant, and W.S. Holland – and joined by June Carter, Carl Perkins, and the Statler Brothers, Johnny Cash performed twice at the prison that day. The record At Folsom Prison, with songs from that concert, is a cornerstone of the Johnny Cash legacy. James Garner's Tribute to Johnny Cash celebrates the life and music of 'The Man in Black' with strong conviction and stunning accuracy. Garner and band faithfully recreate Cash's biggest hits accompanied by historical accounts and personal anecdotes about America's beloved singing storyteller. Garner and his band have performed for enthusiastic audiences in nearly 500 shows at theaters, festivals, and events across the country. A decade ago, the band took its show to the Folsom State Prison for the 40th anniversary of Cash’s infamous live album recorded behind prison walls. For a commemoration of a different nature, Garner and the band participated in an official unveiling of the Johnny Cash Forever Stamp with the local USPS Post Master in Claremont, California on June 5, 2013. Now, in 2018, James Garner and musicians, along with special guests, return to Folsom, at the Harris Center for the Arts, to perform a tribute to 'The Man in Black' on the 50th anniversary of the Folsom prison concert. The musicians have recorded three CDs: James Garner: A Musical Tribute to Johnny Cash (2009), Shades of Black (2012), and James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash: LIVE! (2015). They appear in Live in Concert! James Garner's Tribute to Johnny Cash, an hour-long feature recorded live during a theater concert and broadcast on PBS member stations KVIE and KQED this season. Tonight’s performance features songs performed during the concert at Folsom State Prison as well as favorites like “I Walk the Line” and “Ring of Fire,” and other hits the country giant recorded and performed in a career that spanned six decades.

James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash James Garner and his band are honored to feature special guests in today's tribute performance. Tara Cash, Johnny's daughter, joins us with special memories of her father, captured in his own handwriting, in her book Recollections by J.R. Cash. Reporter Gene Beley and Photographer Dan Poush, of the Ventura County Star Free Press at the time, also share their recollections of traveling to Folsom and covering what became an historic concert. On this 50th anniversary of the famed Folsom prison concert, James Garner, the band, and our special guests invite you to sit back and enjoy the songs and memories of America's musical legend, Johnny Cash and the boomchicka-boom sound of his longtime backing band, The Tennessee Three. A special thanks to David Pier, Paul Dorn, and all of the team at the Harris Center for the Arts for hosting this Tribute performance. www.cashtribute.net Facebook: JohnnyCashTributeShow

About the Artists

came the big voice and for the next two and a half minutes, Garner was mesmerized by the story of a young cowboy named Billy Joe. Where had this music been all his life?!? There was meaning to it and the music was sparse, like nothing else Garner had ever heard. So began his quest of getting his hands on all things Johnny Cash. By age 12, Garner had learned most of the hits sung by 'The Man in Black.' A few years later, Cash would play the Tower Theatre in Fresno, California, where the young James would see him in concert and meet him backstage following the show. “Shaking hands with Johnny Cash is still one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had,” says Garner. In 2007, he and the band began performing James Garner's Tribute to Johnny Cash for theater and festival audiences. Since then, Garner and his band have toured the country, proudly performing the music of Johnny Cash as fans, for fans. "Garner’s ability to cover Cash’s deep vocal range is impressive in its own right, but his ability to capture the timbre and feeling of the renowned singer’s iconic voice is truly special. Garner’s love of, and dedication to, Cash’s body of work is clear – it seems he was born for this role." Brian Cosner, The News-Review 2017.

Note from James Garner

JAMES GARNER – lead vocals, rhythm guitar James Garner grew up on a cotton farm in Hanford, California, discovering Johnny Cash’s music after his dad saw the country legend in concert at the Fox Theatre. At the time, Garner didn't know who Johnny Cash was.... he didn't have hits on the radio, Pandora and YouTube didn't exist and Garner’s parents didn't own any Cash records. One day, Garner, his mom and brother were at the Sam Goody music store in Visalia, California. His mom told Garner and his brother they could each pick out a tape. Intrigued by a country superstar coming to his hometown, Garner chose Johnny Cash: Giant Hits. As they drove home, Garner put his new tape in the cassette player of the family car and out rang a single note in time — the beginning of "Don't Take Your Guns to Town." Then 20 WINTER 2018 PROGRAM GUIDE www.harriscenter.net

I first heard Cash's At Folsom Prison album around 1993, 25 years after its original release. It was raw, in your face, and real. It didn't have the polish of a studio recording. It was rough around the edges, fortifying its authenticity. It's evident in Cash's introduction to "Greystone Chapel," a song written by Folsom Prison inmate Glen Sherley, which Cash had just heard the night before. "We hope we do your song justice, Glen. We're gonna do our best," says Cash. You can hear the sincerity and weight of responsibility in his voice, knowing that he and the band didn't have the song down cold. Throughout the show, you could feel the energy in Cash's voice as he fed off the inmates' enthusiastic approval. This was Johnny Cash in his element. Not as a convict (he never served prison time, contrary to popular belief), but as an entertainer. The Tennessee Three, accompanied by Carl Perkins, seemed to play with a little extra energy – or maybe they didn't. Perhaps the natural acoustics of a prison cafeteria made it seem as such. When most people replay "Folsom Prison Blues" in their head, I think they are playing the track from the album. I know I do. It's the quintessential Johnny Cash recording. James Garner

James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash The Band DENNY COLLERET – lead guitar, vocals Denny Colleret was born in Montreal, Canada and learned to play guitar as a kid by picking-up the needle on Johnny Cash records and replicating what he heard. When he met Johnny Cash at the screening of the country star’s film, The Gospel Road, in 1973, Denny could already nail Luther Perkins’ signature guitar sound and style. He studied music education at Solano College and, since 1978, has played country guitar in a number of successful bands, opening for Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Doug Kershaw and other country acts. Denny has recorded two albums featuring his singing and guitar playing: Trains Go By and Sixteen Songs. He also performs a solo country program at senior resident centers across northern California. Denny’s uncannily accurate guitar work in this show pays tribute to the classic boom-chicka-boom sound of The Tennessee Three. Denny’s favorite Johnny Cash song to play: "Sunday Morning Coming Down."

NICK AURIEMMO – percussion A native of Long Island, New York, Nick Auriemmo earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Performance and Music Education at State University of New York, Fredonia. During that time, he studied classical and contemporary music and West African drumming and xylophone with Ghanaian master, Bernard Woma. Nick completed a year of graduate work at the University of Hartford, studying Middle Eastern frame drumming with four-time Grammy-winner Glen Velez. Nick earned his Masters of Music degree from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, in Percussion Performance and Pedagogy and was a member of the Rockford Symphony Orchestra, Beloit Symphony, and several local bands. Currently a resident of Lodi, California, Nick has performed with the Sacramento, Modesto, and Stockton Symphonies, and has played musical productions with the Stockton Civic Theatre and Sacramento Music Circus. Nick successfully captures the energy and distinctive style of Cash’s only drummer, W.S. Holland, in this show. Nick’s favorite Johnny Cash song to play: "Cocaine Blues."

RICK DUNCAN – bass, vocals Born and raised in Stockton, California, Rick Duncan began his studies at San Joaquin Delta College with Phil Karp, principal bass player for the San Francisco Symphony. After honing his bass playing technique by training with bassist Gary Karr at the University of Hartford, he finished his studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, with private instruction from Charles Siani, principal bassist with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra. In the '80s, Mendes' popular single, "Never Gonna Let You Go" became a No. 1 Adult Contemporary hit and pop top-10 chart topper. In 1992, Mendes' record Brasileiro was awarded the Grammy® for Best World Music Album, and since then, Mendes has been honored with two Latin Grammy® Awards for Best Brazilian Record, Timeless (2006) and Bom Tempo (2010) — which was also nominated for a 2010 Grammy® Award. Mendes' innovation and versatility have enabled him to collaborate with a wide a range of artists. In 2006, he collaborated with contemporary pop, rock, urban, and hip-hop artists for his record Timeless. The record featured a re-recording of his famed hit "Mas Que Nada," accompanied by Gracinha Leporace, Mendes' wife. The project's other collaborators include Justin Timberlake, John Legend, and the Black Eyed Peas. In 2011, Mendes released his 39th album, Celebration: A Musical Journey, commemorating his 50 years as a recording artist. The record included both classics from his career as well as new recordings with Ivete Sangalo and Siedah Garrett — among them a remake of "The Fool on the Hill," which he performed the same year at the 2011 MusiCares Gala Honoring Sir Paul McCartney. Producer, composer, keyboardist and vocalist, Sérgio Mendes is one of the most internationally successful Brazilian artists of all time. His hit single, "Mas Que Nada," is the first Portuguese language song to ever hit Billboard's U.S. Pop chart and Mendes' signature mix of bossa nova and samba and distinctive pop instrumentation have ultimately come to define Brazilian music. With a career spanning five decades, his enduring influence on the music industry continues to evolve. A three-time Grammy® Award-winner, with three additional Grammy® nominations, he has recorded more than 35 albums, with numerous gold and platinum albums among them. In 2012, Mendes received an Oscar® nomination for Best Original Song for "Real in Rio" from the animated film Rio. Mendes' career began with his 1961 album Dance Moderno and the groups Bossa Rio and the Sergio Mendes Trio. In the mid '60s to the late '70s, Mendes began to establish his legendary status as his albums and singles rose to the top of the charts. However, it was his group, Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66 which sparked global stardom. After performing "The Look of Love" at the 1968 Oscars,

Mendes' most iconic album, Herb Alpert Presents Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66, was inducted into the Grammy® Hall of Fame in 2011, joining Bruce Springsteen's legendary Born in The U.S.A., Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech, and the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main St. in the class of historically significant recordings. His most recent album, Magic (2014), is a collection of new songs, recorded with a host of friends and special guests including John Legend, will.i.am, Carlinhos Brown and features the 2014 World Cup hit single "One Nation." Mendes continues to tour worldwide and maintains his work as a film composer and producer, while also always working on and developing his own album projects. “A feature documentary about Sergio Mendes and a new album are in the works for 2018. The companion record on the Concord label will include new songs co-written with younger songwriters, and versions of the Brazilian maestro’s classics featuring intergenerational guests, with some tracks co-produced by will.i.am.” – Billboard 2017

(Hula, traditional Hawaiian instruments) Keola Beamer: “The Quintessential Hawaiian Slack-Key Guitar Master." — The New York Times Henry Kapono: “Kapono is one of the great island songwriters of his generation.” — Honolulu Star-Advertiser

Keola Beamer and Henry Kapono are two legends of Hawaiian music. Each became an icon in the 1970s, both at the creative forefront as Hawaiian music reinvented itself. They have continued to lead the way for over four decades. Keola Beamer’s contributions to slack key guitar during the 1970s began to spark public interest in kī-hō‘alu, launching a statewide revival of the tradition, and his 1978 release, Honolulu City Lights, is the largest selling recording in the history of Hawaiian music. Today he is one of Hawai'i's premier singer-songwriters, arrangers, composers, and masters of the Hawaiian slack-key guitar. Henry Kapono became the wildly popular phenomenon Cecilio & Kapono (aka C&K) with Cecilio Rodriguez. They helped forge the sound of 70s Hawaiian music, with laidback contemporary rock that voiced the feelings of an entire generation in Hawai‘i. Today as a solo performer, Henry is a Grammy-nominated and award-winning singer, songwriter, and recording artist. Despite their common history, Keola and Henry first performed together in 2014, when Henry invited Keola and Moana Beamer to be part of his Back in the Day concert. This wildly successful show featured Hawai‘i’s musical greats who shaped Hawaiian music from the ‘70s on, as part of the “Hawaiian Renaissance” — the seminal movement in Hawai‘i’s cultural history that brought language, music, hula, art, and all aspects of Hawaiian culture back to their central place in the life of the Islands. The Legends tour with Keola and Henry was born.

KEOLA BEAMER

Keola Beamer on slack key guitar: “The art of the Hawaiian slack-key guitar is trying to match the composition with the tuning. When you really get into it, you discover that each tuning is kind of a tonal palette. You can really present a piece in a different light than it's ever been seen before.” Born in 1951, Keolamaikalani Breckenridge Beamer was raised in Kamuela, on Hawai‘i Island, surrounded by members of one of Hawai's most illustrious and beloved musical families. Keola established himself early on as the family's youngest standard-bearer. A child of the rock and roll era, he has always been at the vanguard of the Hawaiian contemporary sound. However, he also helped drive what has become known as the Hawaiian Cultural Renaissance and recorded many of the songs written by his ancestors. He has recorded and produced more than a dozen albums, winning numerous Nā Hōkū Awards, Hawai'i's “Grammy,” including one for Lifetime Achievement in 2009, and has even appeared on Sesame Street and NBC's Today Show. He was nominated for a Grammy Award in Hawaiian Music in 2011 and in Regional Roots music in 2013, as well as the Soundtrack nomination for The Descendants. Keola Beamer was awarded the prestigious 2014 NACF Artist Fellowship by the Native Arts & Cultures Foundation in recognition of his significant contributions to Native Hawaiian cultural life.

Keola's legendary great-grandmother, Helen Desha Beamer, was one of Hawai'i's most prolific and accomplished singersongwriters. She was also a skilled dancer whose intricate footwork and fluid grace left a lasting imprint on the hula. Her granddaughter and Keola's mother, Winona “Nona” Kapuailohia Beamer, was also a noted chanter, composer, and author, who spent a lifetime researching and teaching "Hawaiiana," a term she coined. Indeed, Keola's career as a musician began in his mother's Honolulu hula studio, where he played guitar as an accompaniment for the dancers. Keola Beamer has been an influential figure in the recognition of kī hō’alu as one of the world's great guitar traditions. In 1973, he created the first ever comprehensive instruction book on the subject. Keola continues to remain committed to teaching, through seminars, tablature, instructional books and videos. He was one of Hawai'i's first recording artists to integrate Hawaiian chants and instruments, like the tiny gourd whistle and the nose flute, with contemporary forms of music. Willie Nelson has called his style “the best there is on the planet…There’s no better slack-key player than Beamer.” Keola Beamer’s performances on his double-ported nylon and steel string guitars provide the foundation for each of his concerts. These are unique, hand crafted instruments made of hand selected, native Hawaiian wood. These instruments represent a different paradigm in guitar construction. The double-ported design was created by Keola with the help of Maui-based luthier Steve Grimes. Their philosophy is to embrace and accent the tonal palette of Hawaiian Slack -Key Guitar through the use of an extended soundboard and modified bracing system. Keola feels that this design more accurately portrays the coloration of his art. He describes this open resonance as ka moe‘uhane or more specifically “the language of dreams.” "In my family, music was taken seriously," Beamer says. "It was an integral part of our lives, almost like a religion. But Hawaiians are up against a shallow stereotype, often demeaning to the native culture. That hurts." It has been the life passion of Keola Beamer to counter such images. https://www.kbeamer.com HENRY KAPONO Henry Kapono Ka'aihue is a performer who has it all – vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, composer, thrilling performer, audience favorite. He is an award-winning and Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter. He has taken home numerous Na Hoku Hanohano Awards (Hawaii's “Grammy”) including Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year, Single of the Year, and Album of the Year. He is also the author of the award winning children's book, A Beautiful Hawaiian Day, has appeared in the films, and has made many television appearances.

Known as "Kapono", the Hawaiian word for righteous, Henry was christened "Henry Kapono Hosea Ka'aihue" and is a pure Hawaiian born and raised in Kapahulu, a small town located just outside Waikiki. Although Henry had no formal musical training, he started singing in a children's church choir at the age of five. "I was, and still am, a very shy person, but I loved singing especially in a choral situation," says Henry. "My Dad taught me how to play the ‘ukulele. He would come home from work and sit in his easy chair and play the coolest stuff. I saw a friend of mine play a guitar one day and fell in love with the sound of it. He taught me a few chords and I've been hooked ever since. After that, I taught myself how to play by listening to records, radio and watching other guitarists play." Henry's athletic abilities earned him a baseball scholarship to the renowned Punahou Academy in Honolulu. After high school he earned a football scholarship to the University of Hawaii. Injuries prevented him from fulfilling his dream of becoming a professional football player, but, in a profound way, moved him toward his passion for music and allowed him to fully realize his potential as an artist. His professional career started as a solo artist in little joints around Waikiki, which led to a short stint playing rock in a local island group called "Pakalolo." The group played the islands and Asia where a defunct tour company left them stranded in Vietnam. Putting their situation and talents to good use, the group performed for the troops at fire bases throughout Vietnam and eventually made their way to Thailand. The two years that Henry spent overseas became a personal and professional odyssey that

Legends: Keola Beamer & Henry Kapono profoundly affected his music, his appreciation of life and his love of all people. Returning to Hawai‘i, Henry's career kicked off in a big way in the early 1970s when he formed a duo with Cecilio Rodriguez from California. "Cecilio & Kapono" became an instant phenomenon, their distinctive talents blending together to give contemporary and folk rock a new perspective. They became the first Hawai‘i group to achieve a national recording contract (Columbia Records); together they recorded 13 albums. Always musically adventurous, Henry went on to launch a solo career in 1981, creating an incredibly broad range of musical expressions with 17 solo albums to date — and 6 Na Hoku (Hawaiian “Grammy”) awards, including Best Rock Album in 2015 and Best EP in 2016. Henry touches the soul with the simple honesty of his lyrics and music, and the gift of an evocative, plaintive balladeer's voice that haunts you long after he leaves the stage. Through the years Moana has accumulated valuable teaching experience in the art of the Hula. Her sensitive nature combines her understanding of the technique with the spiritual and philosophical currents expressed in the Hula. Moana remains firmly committed to sharing her cultural knowledge worldwide. She has traveled to Europe to co-teach several workshops on Movement and Hawaiian Dance with renowned German movement teacher Dorothea Jollenbeck and has also traveled annually to Japan to teach hula workshops. Moana has expanded her role in Keola's performances. She dances, chants, sings background vocals, and plays several ancient Hawaiian percussive instruments, including `ili`ili (river stone “castanets”), ka`eke`eke (cut bamboo) and Ipu (gourd drum). Much of Moana's year is spent dancing, chanting, talking story, and providing percussive interludes on tour with her husband Keola.

Mark Hummel’s Blues Harmonica Blowout™ 2018 MARK HUMMEL The past two decades have seen the emergence of young harmonicaled blues bands. In California, groups that draw their inspiration from the Chicago school but add elements of jump blues and rock 'n' roll into the mix have come up with an exciting new style of West Coast blues. In Oakland, the northern capital of California blues, resides the incredibly powerful harmonica player and vocalist Mark Hummel, leader of The Blues Survivors, who has been a major force in shaping and defining this musical genre. Mark Hummel is a road warrior – a true Blues Survivor. Along the way, he has crafted his own trademark harmonica sound – a subtle combination of tone, phrasing and attack combined with a strong sense of swing. While Mark is new to Electro Fi Records, his earlier albums, constant touring and appearances at the major blues festivals have firmly established his solid reputation around the US and Europe. Born in New Haven, Connecticut and raised in Los Angeles, California, Mark absorbed the music of such Chicago based harp blowers as Little Walter, James Cotton, and Sonny Boy Williamson, before settling in Berkeley, California in 1972. There he played with local bluesmen such as Cool Papa, Boogie Jake, Mississippi Johnny Waters and Sonny Lane. In 1980, he took the helm to lead the popular Blues Survivors Band. In 1985, the Blues Survivors released Playing in Your Town, on Rockinitus Records, and immediately went out on the road. Earning their name, they toured virtually nonstop throughout the United States, Canada and Europe often playing alongside such blues greats as Charlie Musselwhite, Brownie McGhee, Lowell Fulson and Eddie Taylor. While on tour with his band in 1988, Mark was introduced to Canadian guitarist and vocalist Sue Foley. After several tours that year, Mark and Sue released Up & Jumpin', which also features piano legend Charles Brown. Eager to revive the Blues Survivors, though, Mark hit the road again in 1990, before releasing Hard Lovin' in 1992 on Double Trouble Records. He has been on the road constantly since then, stopping only to record Feel Like Rockin' in 1994 and Married to the Blues in 1995 on Flying Fish Records. He has performed at numerous festivals across the country, including the San Francisco Blues Festival, Chicago Blues Festival, King Biscuit Blues Festival, Waterfront Blues Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, and has performed and judged at the Hohner Harmonica World Championship, held in Germany.

For Heart of Chicago, Mark's sixth release and first on Tone-Cool, Mark traveled to the Windy City to record with some of the city's most legendary players paying tribute to his Chicago blues influences, featuring former Muddy Waters sidemen Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and Bob Stroger on drums; bass guitarist, Dave Myers (Little Walter's band), and others. In 1998, Mark released Lowdown to Uptown, his 7th CD, a mix of Chicago blues and uptown jazz. This CD features great guests such as Jr. Watson, Mike Welch, Brenda Boykin and the last piano recording of the late, great Charles Brown. Mark's most current CD is called Ain't Easy No More on the Electro Fi label, a mixture of Hummel's originals and some choice rearrangements of previously recorded blues. It's receiving extended radio play at the moment. Since 2012 Mark started the All Star Texas-California Blues Revue-called Golden State Lone Star Revue with Anson Funderburgh, Wes Starr, Mike Keller, RW Grigsby. Hummel recently joined a blues trio called Deep Basement Shakers with a washboard player, Dave Eagle and piano player, Aaron Hammerman, that plays pre-war blues and boogie. BILLY BOY ARNOLD Chicago Harp Master, vocalist and songwrlter Billy Boy Arnold just turned 82 a couple days ago and remains a truly vital player on the Chicago scene. Billy's recent Electro Fi Big Bill Broonzy CD is one of the best CDs to come along in years! Arnold took lessons at twelve from icon John Lee SONNY BOY Williamson before Williamson tragic demise in 1947. Billy soon teamed up with Ellis McDaniel to form a teenage trio with Jody Williams on guitar. They soon ended up recording at Chess Records where Leonard asked them to change the name of "Hey Noxema" to another title. Billy thought of the guy they used to see that called himself Bo Diddley and how it was a funny name — so they would name the song "Bo Diddley." Chess decided to call Ellis that name as well. Arnold soon recorded his classic sides for Chess competitor Vee Jay Records — songs like “Wish You Would,” “You Got Me Wrong,” “Rockinitus,” “Prisoners Plea,” “She Stays Out All Night Long,” “She Fooled Me” would later be performed by Yardbirds, Blasters, David Bowie, Alex Chilton, Charlie Musselwhite, Red Devils, Fabulous Thunderbirds, and many others. Billy has two Grammy-nominations and is in the Blues Music Hall of Fame in Memphis.

Mark Hummel’s Blues Harmonica Blowout™ 2018 JOHN PRIMER Rounding out the Chicago Blues Harp Blowout for Jan. 2018 on West Coast is John Primer. John is shown in the filmed jam with The Rolling Stones sitting-in with Waters at Checkerboard Lounge in Westside Chicago. Soon afterwards, John joined Magic Slim's band, whom he devoted a number of years on the road and in the studio. In between, John became an in-demand session player on records from Living Chicago Blues on Alligator to James Cotton's fine Blind Pig release, Take Me Back. John went solo soon after leaving Slim, becoming a stunning vocalist as well as a top notch player. He's recorded or played with Johnny Winter, Cotton, Gary Clark Jr, The Rolling Stones, Derek Trucks & Buddy Guy. Niyaz presents ”The Fourth Light Project” An immersive Multi-Media Experience Sunday, January 28, 2018; 3 pm

Electro-acoustic outfit Niyaz breaks new ground on The Fourth Light, a far-reaching album that defies the conventions of “world music” and makes a bold statement to a global audience. After three successful albums which have topped the world music sales and radio charts and placed them in front of audiences around the world, Niyaz has created what is arguably their most mature work yet. Mixed by Grammy nominated producer/electronic musician Damian Taylor (Bjork, The Killers, Arcade Fire), the album offers exotic rhythms, outstanding acoustic performances and of course the bewitching melancholy of front-woman Azam Ali's voice, all seamlessly blended into a production of richly textured arrangements, sweeping choruses and electronic beats. The band’s musical and personal heritage lies in the mysticism and allure of the East; but Niyaz was formed in California and is based in Montreal, and one of their aims has long been to build a bridge between East and West — a sanctuary from a modern world of polarized ideologies. On The Fourth Light, lead singer, co-composer and coproducer Azam Ali takes on the role of electronic musician for the first time, programming all the beats for the album. This is a major achievement for a woman who until now has been principally recognized for her spellbinding voice, which has been featured in some of the biggest Hollywood film and television scores. "It was a tremendous challenge to take on what is generally a very masculine role,” Azam says. “People know me as a singer, not an electronic musician, and there was an initial fear that I would not be taken seriously. Once I freed myself up mentally from that self-imposed limitation, I discovered a whole new world inside myself, a world that led me to my greatest personal triumph on this album, which was transcending the role that had come to define me simply as a singer." In many ways, The Fourth Light is a feminist album. The production and programming duties that Azam has taken on – duties usually associated with men – is just one part of it. At the center of the album is Rabia Al Basri, the first female Sufi mystic and poet. Born in the 8th century in what is now Iraq, she served as the main source of inspiration for the music on this album. Rabia was born into extreme poverty during a time when women's rights were severely constrained. 32 WINTER 2018 PROGRAM GUIDE www.harriscenter.net

Sold into slavery at a young age, Rabia defied the odds and managed to find the inner strength and resolve that would eventually lead to her liberation both as a woman and a spiritual figure. As Azam explains, "Rabia's struggles even in the 8th century remain quite relevant to our time, when women continue to strive to rise above the status of inferiority placed upon them by many patriarchal societies around the world." Rabia is credited with the creation of the concept of "Divine Love," which today lies at the heart of Sufi Mysticism. Though only fragments of her poems have survived, the words that do remain carry a powerful message. Her writing served as the building blocks upon which Azam and co-writer/multi-instrumentalist Loga R.Torkian constructed three of the album’s most potent songs: "Tam e Eshq (The Taste of Love)," "Man Haramam (I am a Sin)," and "Marg e Man (My Elegy)." The song "Aurat (Woman)," further drives home the cry for gender equality. The track’s lyrics are based on a visionary poem by Kaifi Azmi, one of the greatest, most progressive Urdu poets of the 20th century. Azmi’s original text was written for his wife in the 1940’s and called for women

Niyaz presents ”The Fourth Light Project”

to stand shoulder to shoulder with men, during an era when women lived in very traditional societies in an India that was still not independent. There has always been a deep social conscience woven into the music of Niyaz. Though many of their songs are original compositions based on or inspired by ancient poetry of the great Eastern mystics, a large part of their repertoire is derived from traditional folk songs of ethnic and religious minority groups in the Middle East who have suffered great oppression. The new album features five of these folk songs: "Shir Ali Mardan (Song of a Warrior)," from the Bakhtiari region of Iran; "Yek Naza (A Single Glance)," from Khorassan, Iran; "Eyvallah Shahim 'new rendition' (Truth)," from the AleviBektashi tradition in Turkey; and two from Afghanistan, "Sabza Ba Naz (The Triumph of Love)," and "Khuda Bowad Yaret (Divine Companion)." The message of hope in the face of oppression, and the need for unity, remain pivotal to the band. Their sublime, ever-evolving mix of poetry and song is delivered through music that is both uplifting and transformative. Niyaz already bridges East and West, the acoustic and the electronic; now the band aspires to restore a severed bond between the past and the present. "It's a daring task to try and bridge the chasm between peoples," says Azam, “but if we can make that happen, even for the moments when people listen to our music, then who's to say we did not triumph in our goal?"

FLORIANA FRASSETTO (Swiss) studied at Academia A. Fersen in Rome from 1967 to 1968. She completed her training as an actress attending a school in mime and acrobatics at Roy Bosier's Teatro Studio. She then worked with the company of Roy Bosier in several school productions that toured Italy. The idea of founding MUMMENSCHANZ resulted from meeting, in late 1971, Andres Bossard and Bernie Schürch – two young Swiss clowns called Before and Lost that performed a partially spoken show. Floriana became the third member of the new company, and together they co-created the repertoire of MUMMENSCHANZ, converting the spoken numbers to masked visuals. Floriana has performed on tour worldwide for the last 45 years. She feels herself an artisan of phantasy and has always been motivated to construct new shapes along with Bernie. Since Bernie’s departure in 2012, she has been tormented by the challenge of creating a new show, which she has now done with plenty of new ideas. That has been possible thanks to the collaboration with Tina Kronis and Richard Alger. She is very happy with her fellow performers and is looking forward to the coming tours together. Among other experiences were the choreography and the costumes for Giancarlo Sbragia’s Faust and André Heller's musical Body and Soul, and an artistic collaboration with Isabelle Baudet for the children's musical Oliver Twist in Lausanne (Switzerland). She is the artistic director of MUMMENSCHANZ. SARA FRANCESCA HERMANN (Swiss) was born in 1985 in Samedan and grew up trilingual with Romanesque, German and Italian. She is a trained primary school teacher. Afterwards she completed a three yearscourse at Comart, a school of physical theatre in Zurich. She won the 2009/10 physical theatre studentship award from Migros Kulturprozent. Since 2010 she has worked as a freelance theatre artist in various productions. She is a co-founder of "Paula fliegt“ and has had several engagements in theatre and music projects in Switzerland and abroad. In May 2015, Sara became a member of the MUMMENSCHANZ company.

In his early age he showed a strong interest in movement and art. He stood out in gymnastics and in skateboarding in which he finds a companion with whom he travels the world. Passionate for music, he perfected his skills in percussion and drums, with which he continues to play in various bands. Through theatre he discovered a means for full expression of himself and entered the school for physical theatre Accademia Teatro Dimitri, where he obtained his Bachelor in 2015. He played in different theatre and cinema productions as Gilgamesh (from Patrizia Barbiuiani), Gotthard 2016 (from Volker Hesse), Tutti Giù (from Niccolò Castelli). In July 2016 he started his journey with the MUMMENSCHANZ company. ERIC SAUGE (Swiss) is the Technical Director of the company. With nearly 10 years of experience in the entertainment business, he now specializes in lighting and machinery effects. Employment by large organizations provided him with world-wide travel. Through his experience and many trips abroad he acquired solid knowledge in technical and team management. Back in Switzerland he continued to train in the field of lighting for events such as theater and television, in which he mainly occupied the roles of console operator and project manager. In 2014, he met MUMMENSCHANZ in Lausanne, and wishing to return to the theatre scene, he joined them as their Technical Director.

OLIVER PFULG (Swiss) was born in 1985 and grew up in Hombrechtikon. ACT III The Great Hall of Siegfried’s Castle ACT IV The Lakeside PROGRAM NOTES ACT I The Garden of Prince Siegfried's Castle Prince Siegfried has come of age and entered upon a new world of affairs of war and the burdens of manhood. It is the day for leaving behind the whims and caprice of youth. A happy day for the Prince, though touched by anxiety. The kindly jester and tutor who have been the Prince's loving companions since his childhood are the first to congratulate him. He greets his companions and joyfully accepts the congratulations of all the residents of the Castle. The Prince's subjects come from far and wide to take part in the festivities. They confer upon him the sword and scepter of authority and swear allegiance to their new ruler. His mother, the Queen Mother of the Realm, presents him with an arbalest as a gift and reminds him that the time has come to choose a bride and that he must make the fateful decision at tomorrow’s ball. He is eager to contemplate this life change in silence. The festivities continue, but the Prince is overcome by a desire to be alone, far from his guests. As he begins to search the contents of his heart he notices a flight of white swans heading toward the nearby lake. He is inspired and follows them there, disappearing into the night. ACT II A Lakeside The voyage to the lake takes the Prince into the depths of the forest. He approaches the Swans quietly and as he nears he sees something quite out of the ordinary. The Swans have stepped ashore and assumed human form! Siegfried lowers the crossbow, astonished with their striking beauty. He gathers his courage and reveals himself. Odette, the swan’s Queen tells him of their terrible curse. They are all

The castle resounds to the clamor of festivities. Renowned Princesses from Hungary, Russia, Spain, Italy and Poland are presented to the Prince. He must choose one of them as his bride, in order to strengthen his authority and consolidate his power. However, in none of these royal heiresses does he find a maiden comparable to Odette, to whom he has given his heart. He rejects them all. With an overwhelming blare of trumpets, a couple of new guests are announced. The evil sorcerer, Rotbart, enters in the guise of a noble knight, and following close behind is his daughter, Odylle, who looks remarkably like Odette. The similarity is so close, in fact, that Siegfried believes, if only for a split second, that it is Odette standing there before him. Odylle seizes the brief moment of illusion as an opportunity and will not allow him to find his senses. She becomes a bewitching temptress, luring him, hypnotizing him, and tricking him into confessing his undying love to her! In this hypnotic stupor, he proclaims that Odylle is to be his bride. Rotbard has triumphed! Siegfried has broken his oath to Odette, betraying her by professing love to another, thereby dooming Odette and the others to an eternity under Rotbart’s evil power. Suddenly a vision of the Swan Lake appears before Siegfried’s eyes, snapping him back into reality. He realizes the terrible mistake he has made. In despair he leaves the palace and hurries to Odette at the Lake. ACT IV The Lakeside Night falls again on the Lake. The swan maidens are anxious, for if the Prince does not fulfill his vow to set them free, they will be doomed to everlasting captivity. The sorcerer raises a raging storm to conceal the Swan Lake behind a screen of dark clouds, But the Prince rushes headlong through the storm to Odette. The sorcerer attempts to conceal her from him, but no power can stop the young man whose heart is so full of love. The Prince overcomes all obstacles, and the spell cast by the evil sorcerer is dashed forever on the rock of true love.

Leading dancers from across the Russia have forged under Radchenko’s direction an exciting new company staging new productions of timeless classics such as Giselle, Don Quixote, Paquita and Carmen. Since its inception, the Moscow Festival Ballet has completed two tours of Europe, with extraordinary receptions in Italy, France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands. Two tours of the United Kingdom, including capacity audiences at London's famed Coliseum, have resulted in re-engagements during the 1995-96, 1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99 and 19992000 seasons. The company has also performed with great success in Turkey at the Istanbul Festival and in Greece at the Athens Festival, and recently completed a two-month tour of Japan,

Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong. Under the direction of Sergei Radchenko, the Moscow Festival Ballet continues to expand its repertoire. In addition to commissioning new works from within Russia and abroad, the company specializes in Twentieth Century full-length ballets such as Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, Legend of Love, Stone Flower, and The Golden Age. Mr. Radchenko has researched the original choreography and stage productions of several of Marius Petipa's classic ballets, including new productions in the year 2000 of Don Quixote and Paquita, and a recreation of Jules Perrot's and Jean Coralli's Giselle. The Moscow Festival Ballet has toured extensively throughout the United States, beginning with a Coast-toCoast tour in the Winter/Spring of 1997 and returning in 2001, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2014, and 2016. SERGEI RADCHENKO (Artistic Director) Born in 1944, Sergei Radchenko graduated from the Moscow School of Dance in 1964 and then joined the Bolshoi Ballet, where he worked for 25 years. He danced the entire repertoire at the Bolshoi, but enjoyed a special reputation for Spanish dance, particularly the role of the bullfighter in the Bizet-Schedrin Carmen Suite. He is the founder and Artistic Director of the Moscow Festival Ballet and has achieved a remarkable feat in the establishment and development of this young-but-great Russian ballet company. Mr. Radchenko presents a large number of master-classes, inviting leading teachers from the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theatres to ensure the continuation of the rich traditions of the Russian classical school. www.harriscenter.net WINTER 2018 PROGRAM GUIDE 41

GISELLE

Act II Giselle's Grave in the Forest

ACT I A Rhineland Village

Hilarion keeps vigil by Giselle's grave, which lies deep in the forest in unconsecrated ground. It is midnight, the time when the Wilis materialize. Hilarion flees in terror when confronted by these apparitions. Myrthe, their queen, now arrives from the marshes and summons her Wilis. She draws Giselle from her grave to be initiated into their rites. The Wilis disperse as Albrecht approaches, searching for Giselle's grave. He lays flowers at the cross and when Giselle's spirit appears to him, he follows it into the forest.

— Intermission — ACT II Giselle's Grave in the Forest PROGRAM NOTES Act I A Rhineland Village Giselle, a peasant girl, has fallen in love with Count Albrecht, who has led her to believe that he is a villager named 'Loys.' Her superstitious mother, Berthe, hoping that Giselle will marry the forester Hilarion, warns her against 'Loys,' to whom she has taken an instinctive dislike. In order to discourage Giselle's love for 'Loys', Berthe further recounts the legend of the Wilis - ghosts of young girls who have been jilted and die before their wedding day: to avenge themselves, they dance to death any man who crosses their paths between midnight and dawn. But Giselle disregards her mother and joins with her beloved, in the celebrations that mark the end of the grape harvest, when she is crowned Queen of the Vintage. Wilfred, Albrecht's squire, secretly warns him that a hunting party is approaching, led by the Duke of Courland and the Countes Bathilde (Albrecht's future bride), who are staying at Albrecht's castle for the betrothal ceremony. Albrecht hides, but Hilarion has witnessed this meeting and decides to break into 'Loy's' cottage to discover the secret of his identity. The hunting party arrives. Giselle dances for the nobles and when she tells Bathilde that she too is engaged, the Countess gives her a necklace. Bathilde, tired from hunting, asks to rest in Berthe's cottage, but the Duke decides to continue the hunt and orders a hunting horn to be left by the cottage door so that he and the rest of the party may be recalled when Berthe is ready to rejoin them. Hilarion now reappears from 'Loys's' cottage. He has found Albrecht's sword and when he compares it with the hunting horn, he sees that they bear the same crest; this gives him the evidence for which he has been looking. Not realizing that the hunt is still nearby, Albrecht returns. Hilarion interrupts the dancing and reveals the truth about 'Loys.' He sounds the horn, the hunting party returns and Bathilde, coming out of the cottage, claims Albrecht as her fiance. The shock is too much for Giselle and she loses her reason. In her madness she relives her love for 'Loys' and, seizing his sword, she kills herself. — Intermission —

Hilarion, pursued by the Wilis, returns and is forced into an endless dance. Exhausted, he is driven into the lake, where he drowns. The Wilis now seek out Albrecht and when Myrthe commands him to dance, Giselle urges him to the safety of the cross, but he is powerless when Myrthe orders Giselle to entice him away by dancing with him. Giselle tries to sustain him, but as the night wears on he becomes weaker and weaker. Just as he is about to die, dawn breaks. Daylight destroys the Wilis' power and the ghostly dancers fade away; Giselle, whose love has transcended death, returns to her grave, her spirits freed from the power of the Wilis, leaving Albrecht sorrowing and alone. GISELLE: THE MUSIC AND ITS CREATOR Adolphe Adam was born in 1803 in Paris. His father, Louis Adam, came from Alsace and was a well-known pianist, professor at the Conservatoire and author of a best-selling piano method. Surprisingly, he was opposed to any musical education for his son, but eventually allowed him to enter the Conservatoire. After a slow start Adolphe became a pupil of Boieldeu, composer of La Dame Blanche, and began to write with remarkable facility. At 22 he received the Second Prix de Rome and in1830 his opera Danilova was presented at the Opera Comique. During the next 18 months he composed four operas, all staged in Paris. He married the sister of Pierre Laporte, director of the Covent Garden Theatre. This connection brought him to London in 1832 for the premieres of his two English comic operas, The First Campaign and The Dark Diamond, and a year later he returned with a ballet score, Faust, for the King's Theatre. More than 50 stage works followed, many of them enormously successful, including the comic operas Le Chalet, Le Postilion de Longjumeau, La Poupee de Nuremberg, Sij'etais Roi and the ballets Le Diable a Quatre, Lajoliejille de Gand, La Fille du Danube, Le Corsaire and of course, Giselle, his acknowledged masterpiece. Adam became one of the most popular composers of his time, as well-known in Berlin and St. Petersburg as in Paris and London. His last stage work was a delightful one-act operetta, Les Pantins de Violette, given its premiere on April 29, 1856 at Offenbach's Bouffes-Parisiens. Adam died in his sleep four nights later. The apparent simplicity of Adam's music is deceptive because the piano editions of his operas and ballets, published for sale to a mass market of amateurs, required such basic presentation. He was, in fact, expert at creating instant theatrical effects with short melodic motifs tailor-made for character or situation and with unexpected harmonic

Moscow Festival Ballet: Giselle progressions to control the audience's emotional tension. Like his compatriots Auber and Herold, similarly involved in opera comique, he benefited from the influence of Rossini and Donizetti, and if all three were inevitably under the shadow of Meyerbeer when attempting grand opera, they were nonetheless totally successful in providing high-class entertainment for most of Europe for well over half a century.

continued

When Giselle was forgotten everywhere else in Europe, it was dropped from the Paris Opera repertory in 1868 — Russian dancers and ballet-masters preserved and honored it. The Moscow Festival Ballet's production maintains the Russian tradition of scrupulous production and loving concern for this gem of the Romantic ballet.

Adam's accounts of composing Giselle vary: in one place he recalls having written the score in eight days, elsewhere he mentions three weeks. The historian Ivor Guest has examined a manuscript score which records dates of completion for separate sections, ranging from April 11, 1841 to the last entry on June 8. Adam may well have been referring to first sketches. At any rate he seems to have enjoyed the collaboration between himself, the rising young star Carlotta Grisi, and her choreographermentor Jules Perrot: 'I composed the music in high spirits. I was in a hurry and that always fires my imagination. I was very friendly with Perrot and Carlotta, and the piece evolved, as it were, in my drawing room.' Although Giselle was not the first ballet to adopt an elementary Leitmotif procedure, it is certainly the earliest that is still in the repertory. The first act contains more examples of this device than the second, because the first lends itself more to the mime scenes necessary to establish the plot in the earlier part of the ballet than it does to set dance pieces. One obvious example is the short, stabbing, unharmonized motif associated with Hilarion, another is the repeated and flexible use of the love theme for Giselle and Albrecht, recalled towards the end of the first act in fragmented form and chromatically raised pitch layers. The set dance sections are composed in the form of their aria and ensemble counterparts in operas of the time: quadrilles, waltzes, polaccas, galops, nocturnes or tarantellas. Adam uses these forms with a certain freedom and juxtaposes them effectively. The enormous popularity of Giselle has had a curious effect on its music. Since the mid 19th century, the numerous productions in different countries have brought about many changes of detail in choreography and scenario. It was not normal practice to import orchestral material for new productions of ballets of that period. The choreographer would rehearse the dancers to the sound of one violin, sometimes two, playing from a violin-conductor part, prepared from the original score. An orchestration would then be ordered from a local musician, inevitably reflecting whatever changes had been made. That is why the great centers of ballet culture have inherited variants of the original music and its instrumentation. Adam's orchestral score was never published and the foregoing comments may perhaps explain why there had been no urgent search for it. Giselle was first seen in Moscow in 1843, just two years after its creation in Paris, and a year after it was staged in St. Petersburg. The ballet's history in Russia since that time has shown a continuous sequence of performances, with Jules Perrot — one of the great originators of the choreography — providing a basic text which has been illuminated by the care and genius of generations of ballerinas and producers. International Guitar Night Featuring Lulo Reinhardt, Calum Graham, Marek Pasieczny, and Michael Chapdelaine Wednesday, February 21, 2018; 7:30 pm have played in the United States, China, France, Switzerland, Belgium, England, the Czech Republic, Scotland and Germany. Lulo has performed on multiple tours as a soloist with International Guitar Night between 2009 and 2016, in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Germany. He returns as the artistic director, host and performing guitarist for the 2017 and 2018 IGN tours.

LULO REINHARDT Django Reinhardt left behind an indelible musical legacy, introducing and defining a passionate style of Gypsy Jazz guitar that was astonishing in the 1930's and is still revered and emulated today. Born to a Gypsy family in Belgium, Django's playing inspired his extended family in Germany and France, and successive generations of Reinhardts have reinforced his powerful musical vision and added their own ideas. LULO REINHARDT, Django's grand nephew, is a third generation master from Germany. He has retained the incredible Reinhardt soul, speed and dexterity and updated the repertoire. Lulo Reinhardt was first taught by his father at the age of five. At twelve, he played in the Mike Reinhardt Sextett and later cofounded the group, “Django Reinhardt and the Heartbreakers.” In 1991, he founded “I Gitanos” with his father Bawo and cousin Dege, touring throughout Europe and first establishing his national reputation. Lulo is a spontaneous and spirited musician. His curiosity took him to southern Spain in search of flamenco roots, and to South America, exploring various musical styles of Latin Jazz. By 2002, he was ready to take his place as a bandleader, founding the Lulo Reinhardt Project. They recorded the highly-acclaimed Project No. 1 in 2002, and Project No. 2 in 2005, reflecting his passion for Latin music. In 2007, Saga Instruments of San Francisco CA made the first Lulo Reinhardt Model Gitane 310, modeled on the classic Gypsy guitars. This inspired Lulo to compose more Swing material, which he combined with Latin music, and in 2007 changed the name of his group to the Lulo Reinhardt Latin Swing Project. They recorded their first CD in 2008. In the beginning, he played in Europe with an all-German band but later spent considerable time in Australia, forming a new band of German and Australian musicians. They have recorded several CD's, and toured extensively internationally. In additional to annual Australian tours beginning in 2008, they

CALUM GRAHAM At just 24, Calum Graham has already enjoyed a career that would be the envy of most artists double his age. The Albertabased guitarist and singer/songwriter has released five acclaimed albums, won major national music competitions, performed at the Olympic Games in both Vancouver and London, racked up some phenomenal views on YouTube, and was most recently named one of the top 30 guitarists in the world under 30 by Acoustic Guitar Magazine. Andy McKee, one of today’s most popular acoustic guitarists, calls Calum “the most promising young guitarist I’ve seen. His command of the guitar is already really impressive!" Born in British Columbia and raised in High River, Alberta, Graham’s musical journey first took flight when he began playing the guitar at the age of 13. Five years later in the summer of 2010, Graham attended the Canadian Guitar Festival and entered the prestigious Canadian Fingerstyle Guitar Competition. Impressed with his original compositions, the judges awarded Graham with a first place finish; a feat no other teenager has accomplished in the history of the festival. The clip of his winning performance now has just under a million views on YouTube. As Calum Graham’s name continued to grow in Alberta and across Canada for his guitar work and musicianship, Graham proved that his talent was not limited to his extraordinary ability to play the guitar. In 2011, Graham won the Canada’s Walk of Fame nationwide “A Song For Canada” contest based on his poetic acuteness. His winning poem was used in the song “I’m Here, (A Song For Canada)”. The song was performed by

Chantal Kreviazuk and co-written by Graham, Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace) and Stephen Moccio (“I Believe,” 2010 Vancouver Olympics theme song/”Wrecking Ball,” Miley Cyrus). “Calum’s entry resonated strongly among the judges. His poem celebrates the cultural mosaic that is Canada. He has captured the diversity of this country – something that we as a nation are renowned for and proud of.” — Stephan Moccio In the late winter of 2012, and with two albums already under his belt (Sunny Side Up (2009), Indivisibility (2012), Graham teamed up with iconic Fingerstyle Guitarist Don Ross. The result was the instrumental acoustic duet album titled, 12:34. Recorded at famed “Metalworks Studios” (Prince, Tina Turner, RUSH, Drake), and released through CandyRat Records (world’s biggest acoustic guitar label), the album featured six originals by Graham, three by Ross, and a cover of OutKast’s hit song, “Hey Ya”. Not long after the release of 12:34, Graham saw a loyal following begin to grow and it wasn’t long before his unique sound started to find a wide and appreciative audience. In November of 2013, Graham released a solo instrumental album titled Phoenix Rising (CandyRat Records). The title song has already generated over two million hits, with other songs also notching impressive numbers. The success of the album enabled Graham to expand his global fanbase and he soon began touring internationally, both on his own and with the likes of Don Ross and Andy McKee. Graham just recently released his fifth studio album Tabula Rasa recorded with world renowned Acoustic Guitarist, Antoine Dufour. Adding an extra dimension to his compositions, the album introduces Graham’s soulful vocals to his audience for the first time. The album was released in March 2016 and features a combination of his exemplary instrumental guitar work punctuated throughout with elements of folk, blues, and pop in his vocal songs with guest performances by Antoine Dufour and Bass Guitar Extraordinnaire, Michael Manring. With Graham bringing an innovative sound to the industry, it wasn’t long before Canada’s top booking agency, The Feldman Agency, also counted themselves a fan of Graham’s music. So much in fact, that in July 2014, they decided to partner Graham with renowned Canadian producer Gavin Brown (Billy Talent, Metric, The Tragically Hip) on his Sessions X series. The series was recorded at Toronto’s Five-Star “Noble Street Studios” and features Graham alongside a number of acclaimed musicians including; Tears For Fears, Feist, Three Days Grace, Metric, and Ron Sexsmith. At only 24 years old, it’s unquestionable that Calum Graham has enough talent to revolutionize how audiences appreciate music.

continued In 1994 Michael turned his attention to pop music, in arranging, producing and recording Time-Life Music's beautiful Guitar by Moonlight collection, which sold 250,000 copies in it's first two years in the stores. In 1998, he once again, expanded his musical range and gained instant notoriety and credibility in the "acoustic music" world as a "fingerstyle" guitarist and composer, by winning the National Fingerpicking Championships at Winfield.

MICHAEL CHAPDELAINE Michael Chapdelaine is the only guitarist ever to win First Prize in the world's top competitions in both the Classical and Fingerstyle genres; the Guitar Foundation of America International Classical Guitar Competition and the National Fingerstyle Championships at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival in Winfield , Kansas.

Michael is Professor of Music and head of guitar studies at the University of New Mexico, and has previously been on the faculties of the University of Colorado at Denver and Metropolitan State University. He has given master classes throughout the world including, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Peru, Venezuela, Taiwan, Indonesia and at institutions such as, University of Miami, Mannes School of Music, University of Texas, and California State University. His teachers included the great Spanish maestro Andres Segovia.

From New York's Lincoln Center to the Cactus Cafe in Austin, from Milano to Bangkok, Chapdelaine continues to enchant, dazzle and surprise audiences and critics alike as he redefines the modern acoustic guitar with his amazing technique, "soulful" expressiveness, and versatility as a performer, composer and arranger/producer. His performances, played on both steel string and classical guitars, include musical styles ranging from blues to Bach to country to rhythm n' blues as he wins his audiences hearts with breath taking technique and the poetic magic of his original musical portraits and landscapes. In the 80s and 90s Michael proved himself to be one of the worlds finest classical guitarists; twice winning the coveted National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Grant, and taking First Prize in both the Guitar Foundation of America's and the Music Teachers National Association's Guitar Competitions. He also won the Silver Medal in Venezuela's VIII Concurso International de Guitarra "Alirio Diaz." He has toured four continents while giving hundreds of performances for Affiliate Artists Inc., and various arts promotion organizations. In 1992 he recorded the Sonata Romantica CD, which many critics and connoisseurs of classical guitar consider to be one of the definitive recordings for the instrument. Acoustic Guitar Magazine wrote "... if I were marooned on a desert island with a limited selection of recordings, this one would be among my choices...I have seldom heard a more beautiful album. Other young guitarists have excellent technique, but few have such style and musicality, and Chapdelaine's beautiful tone is the nearest to Segovia's that I can recall."

With moving themes of immigration, love, loss and triumph over adversity, in good times and bad, Ireland’s traditions of music, song and dance have been the sound track to the lives of millions of people.

CIARÁN CONNOLLY Principal Choreographer & Movement Director Ciarán is originally from Dublin and has worked successfully in London for the last 14 years as a commercial dancer and choreographer, working on shows such as The X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent and Strictly Come Dancing. A story of Love & Loss, Trepidation and Triumph. Dublin Irish Dance tells the story, through Irish music, song, dance, of the immigrant Irish as they left their homes in Ireland for the shores of America.

From the beat of the breaking heart embodied in poignant songs of love and loss to the pulsating beat of the invigorating Irish dancers reflecting their triumph over adversity, ‘Dublin Irish Dance’ tells the story of the Irish who traveled to America in search of a new life. The performance comprises a blend of classic contemporary tunes with traditional Irish rhythms alongside stirring & emotive vocal tracks. Experience the dazzling dance performances, the incredible emotion of the pure celtic voice and the sensational multi instrumentalists on fiddle, flute, uilleann pipes, accordion, banjo, mandolin, whistle, bodhrán, guitar, piano, drums & bass. Featuring word champion dancers, all Ireland champion instrumentalists, principal performers from Riverdance together with sensational performers from Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance and Celtic Woman. Dublin Irish Dance is a captivating portrayal of the Irish and its culture that will leave you with heartfelt tears and dancing in the aisles...and wanting to book the next flight to Ireland! Dublin Irish Dance is like no other show in its genre. Complete with pulsating and stirring Irish music together with original choreography this exciting production steeped in Ireland’s cultural traditions is infused with worldly influences and vast experience and is undoubtedly unique in its imaginative design.
