Some of my fondest memories have been on a bike. As a kid, I remember cycling around my neighborhood till the last drop of sunlight was squeezed from the sky and the crickets started calling. When adolescence arrived, my hot pink Huffy stayed in storage, as I became “too cool” to commute to school, or anywhere for that matter, via bike. In college, cycling took on a whole new purpose: cruising to the beach and (occasional) class in San Diego. As a full-fledged adult, pedaling serves as exercise, transportation (truth be told, I’d rather take two wheels to get somewhere than four), and a chance to explore new surrounds without being confined to a car. There’s something so satisfying, so freeing and meditative, about going for a long, leisurely ride—especially when it’s along the American River Bike Trail and the destination includes a pint and provisions. In honor of my passion for pedaling and the fact that May is National Bike Month, I hope you too catch the bicycling bug. But before you hit the trails, there are some important rules of the road and safety precautions to be aware of. Thankfully, Kourtney Jason consulted area experts and presents a list of smart cycling tips—plus our “I don’t ride a bike favorite trails around to add days to my town and a handful of life. llison Harvey knows a thing or two about the challenge of being a female entrepreneur.

She’s a lawyer and the founder of her own law firm, A.L. Harvey Law, and is used to defying expectations within a male-dominated field. “If there’s a male attorney alongside me in the courtroom, people often assume he’s the person in charge,” she notes. Yet Harvey isn’t daunted by these difficulties. She grew up in a house with a tractor-driving mother, a woman who ran her own grading and excavating business. “She was a trailblazer,” Harvey says, looking back on it now. “It showed me that a woman can do absolutely anything she puts her mind to.” In addition to her law practice and busy home

At a trying moment in my career, I was reminded by a wise attorney that it’s called the “practice of law” for a reason, which is that no one can know it all or have done it all before. We all have to practice our skill set. I think this is true in our personal lives, too; it’s a practice.

life as a mother of two boys, Harvey is a founding member of The Ripple Effect, a networking and philanthropic nonprofit for young and up-andcoming professionals. Harvey is also an avid community volunteer. To that end, she’s the vice president of the Auburn Chamber of Commerce and is actively involved in organizations such as the Auburn Ski Club and Placer Hills Education Foundation (PHEF), a nonprofit that supports local schools. Despite all her obligations, however, Harvey insists that—while it’s far from easy—it’s possible for women to balance being a great mom with being a successful professional and active member of the community. “I’m so lucky to have a career that lets me do what I love in a community I love,” she shares. —Amber Foster

Art Studios Tour Roundup

Mother's Day weekend is host to two great events showcasing local art: the North Auburn Art Studios Tour and the Loomis Art Loop Open Studios Tour, both free and running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 12 and 13. The North Auburn Art Studios Tour features artists in their private environments demonstrating and selling their art, ultimately helping to “educate the public to become aware of our rich visual arts community and help them learn to appreciate processes," explains Janet Nicholson, a member of North Auburn Artists. The self-guided tour includes mediums ranging from blown glass and wood sculptures to ceramics and watercolors. Studios are within a few miles of each other, and a map can be viewed online. The Loomis Art Loop Open Studios Tour also has a map online for easy planning and features 17 artists—showcasing a range of art, including paintings, fiber arts, threedimensional works, and jewelry—at four locations. The featured artists have a range of professional experience, some earning local and even national honors. ine artist Dottie Phelps Visker has always enjoyed drawing, painting, and creating, but it wasn’t until a college art instructor showed admiration for one of her oil paintings that she began to take it more seriously. Although it was her first formal art class, Phelps Visker grew up watching her mom—who used Bob Ross’ TV show, The Joy of Painting, as her guide—paint at home. Later on, and throughout Phelps Visker’s journey as a mom and registered nurse, she continued pursuing her passion for drawing and painting, taking the occasional lesson when time allowed. “Art brings everyone together—all ages, ethnic groups, counties, and diversities,” she shares. “Art transcends time and gives you what you want, see, and need.” Currently, Phelps Visker is a participating artist in the PlacerArts Studios Tour (slated for November 9-11) and showcases her colorful, texture-rich pieces at numerous local businesses. She’s also this month’s featured artist at Gallery at Marina Square in Morro Bay.

HLB: WHAT MEDIUMS DO YOU PREFER TO WORK WITH? DPV: I [typically] use watercolors with ink and oil markers, acrylics, acrylics/oil blend, and sometimes a mixture of all. I enjoy textures so I might add shells, sand, or crystals. I also like combining my photography and art paintings digitally into works. In the summer, I love to paint outside and utilize the heat to dry the layers quickly, as I blow paint with a straw or drag the layers with a knife. Many of my abstracts are done with music and while dancing, and you can also catch me drawing and painting around town at coffee shops or restaurants. I love to be out and about!

May is National Bike Month, which means more and more cyclists hitting the streets and trails around town. Whether on two wheels or four, it’s imperative to follow the rules of the road and be considerate. To ensure we’re all respecting the same laws, we asked local bike experts to share their top tips for keeping everyone safe.

ETIQUETTE “Watch your speed on the trails and be alert for pedestrians. As trail usage continues to increase, we want to make sure to be safe and courteous to all users,” says Jim Konopka, senior park planner of trails for Folsom’s Parks and Recreation Department. “Pedestrians [should] walk on the left side of trails facing

oncoming bicycle traffic. Making eye contact between the cyclist and pedestrian makes a big difference,” Konopka says. “Being visible is a must when riding and being able to let people know where you are without shouting is helpful, too. A polite bell lets others know you’re near. Ring it often,” says Adam Titone, one of the bike experts at Mike’s Bikes.

According to Mott, “The most common hand signal is the one used when turning. Simply raise your right or left arm and point in the direction you’re turning. Make sure you do this nice and early, before your turn, to give other road users enough time to react to your signal. This also gives you extra time to brake if you’re going to need to come to a stop.” “Helmets meeting the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission bicycle standards range in price from $40-$200. A good helmet should fit comfortably and ventilate hot air efficiently; their recommended life span is five years after minimal use,” Titone says. “Lights are made for two purposes: to see and to be seen. Brighter lights help navigate darker areas, while others are made to help you become more visible to other riders and drivers,” Titone advises. “Acknowledge other riders by being friendly. Unexpected moves cause accidents—ride safely and watch out for others, yield to pedestrians, avoid [riding on] sidewalks, and use care at crosswalks,” Titone says. “Be a smart rider. Use bike-specific routes and know alternatives just in case. Be ready for changing weather and technical issues such as a flat. CARE “Keep your bike safe by using a good lock and knowing how to use it. Register your bike and add it to your insurance policy. Keep your serial number on file. Learn to use the tools for security to deter theft,” Titone says. “Make sure both front and rear brakes are working and providing the appropriate level of modulation. If your brake pads or braking cables are worn, it’s time for a trip to your local bike shop to ensure you keep stopping safely,” Mott advises. “Know your bike. Have it tuned-up if you notice something isn’t right. Know your tires, how much air you need, and how used they are. A dirty bike is a used bike; a clean bike is a happy bike,” Titone says.

The new Johnny Cash Trail, which extends from Folsom’s Historic District to Folsom Lake and the American River Bike Trail, has a few hills along the way with amazing scenery and the 190-foot Robber’s Ravine Bridge. Roseville boasts nearly 100 miles of on-street bike lanes and 35 miles of off-street bike paths. Go for a ride along Miners Ravine Trail (catch the trail at Sculpture Park behind Home Depot and North Sunrise Avenue and ride all the way to Sierra College Boulevard) or catch the south branch of the Pleasant Grove Creek Trail at Veterans Memorial Park and ride through beautiful open space and majestic oak trees to Blue Oaks Park. The Humbug-Willow Creek Trail extends about 16 miles from Lake Natoma Trail to Empire Ranch and is super scenic with most of the trail running parallel to Humbug and Willow Creeks. The El Dorado Trail—a multimodal transportation corridor that passes through California’s historic Gold Rush country and runs over 35 miles—boasts various bike paths and access points. For a paved route, park at Placerville Station (2970 Mosquito Road) and take the trail east to Camino or west into Downtown Placerville.

Inside is a collection of art supplies: crayons, paints, construction paper, pipe cleaners, drawing paper, a blank book the child can decorate or use as a journal, scissors, glue, a ruler, brown paper bags to make puppets, and more. The box itself can be colored and decorated and kept as a keepsake container. Since December, boxes have also included superhero capes. “These kids are superheroes who fight courageous battles every day,” Costa says. And so are their families: The organization is now planning a similar box for them, with small necessities such as coffee mugs, snacks, toothbrushes, [lip balm], and puzzles. “They’re going through a lot, too,” Costa affirms. ospital pediatric wards aren’t typically the cheeriest places for kids or their families. Thankfully, All About

Hope is trying to change that. In three local hospitals, the nonprofit provides each child age four and older—admitted for at least 48 hours—with a pink and blue “Hope Box” containing an explosion of art supplies, says founder Cindy Costa, because it brightens the kids’ lives and encourages what she calls “courageous creativity.” The idea to make the boxes evolved over 12 years when Costa’s daughter was in the hospital battling complications from appendicitis. As Costa kept vigil at her six-year-old’s bedside, she witnessed the heartache of other parents tending to their children. If her daughter survived, she vowed to help these families. Brittany did survive, and Costa kept her promise, first bringing home-cooked meals and blankets to the families every other week. Two years ago, when food was no longer allowed, she developed the Hope Boxes. Her inspiration was an autistic boy at the Ronald McDonald House who came out of his shell for the first time when Costa helped teach him to paint. “I thought, ‘How can I make that happen every day?’ And I came up with the idea for the Hope Box.” She launched All About Hope last June, with the goal of distributing 600 boxes by Christmas. Instead, she handed out 1,700 to Sutter Children’s Center, UC Davis Children’s Hospital’s pediatric unit, and the Ronald

Samantha Snell In the near future, Costa hopes to add two more local hospitals for a total of 400 boxes each month—a number that doesn’t cover every child. Long-term, she envisions a resource center with art and music therapy and space for volunteers to sew such items as scent dolls, which are bathed in the mother’s body scent and placed with infants in critical care. The only limit to Costa’s dream is funding. Volunteers do the work, but the boxes cost $25 each, and the organization needs help with buying art supplies. “The boxes bring hope and healing to these kids and their families,” Costa says. “It’s so rewarding to see a child smile.” allabouthope.net

• 1 cup dried cattle beans • • • • •

Note: If you cannot find cattle beans, you can substitute with any other small bean (i.e., kidney beans, garbanzo beans, cannellini beans, etc.)

1 tbsp. + 1 tsp. salt, divided 2 cloves garlic, divided 2 bay leaves 2 or 3 sprigs of fresh rosemary 1/2 lb. cherry tomatoes, halved

1. Rinse the beans and then soak them in a bowl with 8 cups of cold water and 1 tbsp. of salt. Soak overnight (mine soaked for about 12 hours). Drain soaking liquid from beans, add beans to a medium stockpot with plenty of water to cover them, 1 tsp. of salt, 1 clove of garlic, bay leaves, and rosemary. Bring beans to a simmer over medium heat, skim off any foam that accumulates on the surface, and then set heat to low and simmer beans for about 2 hours, stirring occasionally until beans are soft (make sure beans stay submerged the whole time). When

Allow beans to cool to room temperature. 2. While the cattle beans cool, blanch your green beans, halve your cherry tomatoes, and shave the fennel, reserving about 1/2 cup of the fennel greens to be added to the salad. 3. Mince 1 clove of garlic (I use a microplane zester for this) and add to a small bowl with the juice of

Combine blanched green beans, cooled cattle beans, halved cherry tomatoes, shaved fennel, and dressing to a bowl. Chop the reserved fennel greens and add to salad bowl. Toss the salad until all of the ingredients are well coated in dressing. Enjoy immediately or for best results, cover and allow salad to marinate in the fridge for a day or two. Makes 4 servings.

SUMMER VEGETABLE “PANADE” CASSEROLE

• 1 loaf day-old crusty bread, cut into 1/2inch slices • 2 tbsp. olive oil • 1/4 cup unsalted butter • 2 bunches green onions, thinly sliced • 6 cloves garlic, thinly sliced • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line the bread slices on a baking sheet, brush with the olive oil, and toast until lightly browned. Remove from oven, reduce the temperature to 375°F, and set aside. 2. While bread is toasting, melt the butter in a heavy-bottomed medium pot over medium heat. Add the green onions and garlic and cook until fragrant, about 3 minutes. Add the flour and cook another 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Whisk in the milk and season very generously with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Continue

4 cups milk 2 large meaty tomatoes, thinly sliced 1 small zucchini, thinly sliced lengthwise 1 small yellow squash, thinly sliced lengthwise 1/2 cup grated mozzarella or provolone cheese 1/4 cup grated parmesan Salt and pepper, to taste

cooking, stirring gently, until milk is thickened completely, about 10 minutes. Remove pot from the heat. Whisk in half of each grated cheese and set aside. 3. In the bottom of a large casserole dish, spoon a little of the cream sauce to coat. Add a single layer of the toasted bread slices and spoon the cream sauce over the top to cover. Add a layer of tomato slices, then a layer of zucchini and yellow squash. Season the vegetables with salt and pepper, and spoon more of the cream sauce over top. Add another layer of the bread slices, then the vegetables,

always coating with the cream sauce. You should end up with two layers of bread and two layers of vegetables. Top the casserole with the remaining cream sauce, then sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Bake in the hot oven until heated through and bubbling around the edges, about 25 minutes. Switch the oven to broil and cook until the top of casserole is nicely browned, about 2 minutes more. Remove from the oven and let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Makes 6 servings.

fter spending 15 years in Italy, where he met his future wife and opened a motorbike touring and rental business, Joe Charity and said wife Miranda decided to bring their passions to California and open a motorcycle business. Oh yes, and an Italian restaurant. I can’t speak to the former, but the latter has been a highly anticipated and wildly popular dining destination since opening last December— Caprese Salad thanks in part to Chef Marc and his culinary creations. I stopped in to sample their offerings and started with the clam steamers (you can also opt for mussels or a little of both) and a slice of smoky-grilled baguette to plunge into the briny, buttery, white wine studded sauce with arugula. Oliver Twist said it best. “Please, sir, I want some more!” Poor Oliver missed out on the Caprese salad I ordered next, featuring fresh mozzarella, whole basil leaves, local olive oil, lemon, Italian sea salt, and a beautiful balsamic reduction to complement the plump red tomatoes. If one should go through all of the expense and trouble to order an imported pasta maker from Italy, your pasta should be mind-blowing, and from my point of view as a certified pasta snob: bellissimo! My revelation came in the form of Amatriciana—one of Italy’s favorite dishes from the city of Amatrice. This version featured a melt-in-your-mouth smoked pork belly, savory tomato sugo with plenty of red chile, and that beautiful spaghetti di la casa. “We’re frequently asked for familiar dishes like veal picatta and chicken Parmesan,” Joe told me over a glass of Chianti, “but we want to bring a more authentic Italy to our customers.” No argument here Joe—keep that pasta machine rolling, brother! Next, our waiter brought the Ciao chicken—a locally sourced, roasted half chicken with rich herb jus, al dente green beans, and roasted red potatoes. The dish was the epitome of Italian country-style cooking: simple, quality ingredients elevated by skilled hands. I have to personally thank Joe for contributing to my newly acquired dessert addiction: the banoffee cup. This British classic—chock-full of dulce de leche cream, chocolate chips, bananas, crumbled cookies (and a dose of willpower breaker)—is sure to send diners scurrying home to dust off their treadmills (or to their couches). And, just to clarify, metric system be damned: and California wines; espresso drinks made It’s a huge bowl—not a “proper cup!” Thanks Joe and Miranda… with genuine Lavazza coffee; daily Happy mangia bene!

KoJa Kitchen // What happens when you combine Korean food with Japanese food? You get a wonderful restaurant that started

as a food truck and has since expanded to multiple brick-and-mortars called KoJa Kitchen. (I love a creative name.) Though known for their namesake Koja—which is like a burger but with crispy garlic rice buns in lieu of bread—I opted for a few other items…starting with the Kamikaze Fries. Are you ready for your mouth to water? Picture spicy nachos made with waffle fries instead of chips, Korean beef, kimchi, green onions, Japanese mayo, and red sauce. Pro tip: Make sure you have a beverage handy—this dish packs a punch. Although, truth be told, I’m kind of a wimp when it comes to spicy food. Next came the tacos. The Chicken Taco—stuffed with Korean barbecued chicken, wasabi mayo, cilantro, fried onions, and sesame vinaigrette lettuce—was heavenly, and the Braised Pork Taco was just as divine; but let’s be honest: When the ingredient list includes miso-coconut braised pork, garlic aioli, and fried onions can you really go wrong? Their bowls—brimming with white or seasoned brown rice, spring mix, and your choice of short ribs, braised pork, chicken, beef, ahi tuna, tofu, or a soy and portobello mushroom patty—looked amazing too. Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

We’re a boutique DIY workshop that offers hands-on classes where you can create custom and charming home décor—including wood signs, framed signs, canvas wall hangings, pillows, Lazy Susans, and centerpiece boxes—from raw materials. We also offer private events, public classes, and kids’ workshops, and sell a curated selection of fabulous retail (jewelry, décor, and gifts).

It found us! We were all competitive swimmers growing up, and our passion for the sport led us to pursue a career in swimming and teaching swim lessons.

Why is your staff the best in the business? All of the ladies have other full-time jobs, and this is something they do because they love it—not because it pays the bills. Each of them is amazing and brings something different to the team.

What life accomplishments are you most proud of? My husband and I took a five-month road trip around the country in a 21-foot travel trailer. It was a big dream of ours and was scary because I quit my job to do it, but it ended up being the best decision and is where I discovered AR Workshop.

What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? Our first jobs were all in some capacity of customer service. We learned that even if you can’t please every single customer, never stop trying your best to do so. Customers always come first!

How are you involved with both the community and your customer? We like to get to know people—their different experiences, opinions, and needs.

Why is your staff the best in the business?

My father. He owns and operates a successful electrical contracting company and has opened and sold many other businesses along the way. He’s the hardest working person I’ve ever met, and I strongly value his opinion. He’s amazing!

All of our swim instructors are personally trained and supervised by our owners. Our philosophy is based on over 40 years of experience teaching swim lessons and coaching swim teams. Our instructors go through extensive one-on-one training in order to meet our demanding standards, and we employ one of the most popular and respected swim instruction models in the country. What’s more, we always try our best to let them grow and become even better.

What’s your biggest job perk?

Where do you go when the going gets tough?

Getting to hear how much everyone loves their projects. It’s great when they get completed and it’s time for the big reveal.

To the ocean!

What’s your favorite local event that you go to? I love going to the local farmers’ markets.

We love seeing children having fun in the water and becoming safe in the pool at a very young age.

What’s your favorite local business other than your own?

Zuda Yoga. It really is life-changing. I introduced my husband to it five years ago, and he tells me how happy he is about it all the time.

Kid’s Camp. We’re close with the owner and even taught her kids how to swim.
