WELCOME TO SCHOOLGUIDE! YOUR EDUCATION EXPERT We are proud to release our second annual edition of SchoolGuide! Our children’s education is a high priority for so many of us, and SchoolGuide was born from the need for there to be a place where you can find up to date information on all types of educational facilities – schools, tutors, sports, music, special needs, and more. The editorial topics you will find in this issue are based on input we received from readers and speak to how parents can help teachers at home, encouraging creativity, and also ways to help kids with reading challenges – something we have witnessed firsthand, as has the writers of this piece. Reading and retention are such important and fundamental parts of our ability to learn. If your child is facing reading challenges, we hope this article will help you. We were excited to hear from so many of you after the release of our

WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD’S by Sharon Penny
I
n our parents’ and grandparents’ day, teachers taught and parents parented, and aside from the odd parent-teacher meeting, never the twain would meet, like ships passing in the night. Today, parents and teachers are encouraged to be collaborators, but for busy teachers and working 12 Style’s School Guide-2018-19 schoolguideonline.com
parents, it can be difficult to articulate the how’s of achieving mutually beneficial harmony. Here’s a few simple ways: Become the avengers Parents and teachers are superheroes, there’s no question. You’re both working toward the best interests of your child, so why not do it together? Look
TEACHER AT HOME at The Avengers and Justice League: superheroes team up all the time! Don’t let your child see you as the “out” for their teacher’s assignments. Pick up the teacher’s mantle and extend their principles in your own home. If you have concerns, address them with the teacher rather than in front of your child. Don’t just communicate when something goes wrong; seek a problem-solving relationship where you can
work toward helping your child together, rather than separately. Reading time is the best time If you don’t already, get in the habit of reading with your child. If it gets tiresome for either of you (it happens), add a “special” book to the repertoire, in addition to the required reading. Find a book on a topic Style’s School Guide-2018-19 schoolguideonline.com 13
you both enjoy: a sport or a pastime, an adaptation of a movie, something that bonds you together, and then create a unique shared moment between the two of you. We love homework Kids don’t always like doing homework, and parents don’t always understand the methodology to be able to help. But as a parent you can help your child’s teacher by supporting the homework in the home. Remove the distractions, and be a motivator. Facilitate their learning by being interested and asking questions. Letting your child explain the assignment and articulate it themselves in their own way can help them better understand what they’re learning. If your child is struggling with the assigned work, let the teacher know as soon as you notice a pattern forming. The sooner you address issues, the better. Say you, say me Communication is the key to helping your child’s teacher. Let a new teacher know of any learning difficulties, study habits, or even just personality quirks about your child (“She sings ALL the time,” “He is so obsessed with Minecraft he writes stories about it”). Let them know the best method and times to reach you and if any of that information ever changes, let the teacher know. If the teacher reaches out to you, try to respond quickly. If there’s something going on at home that might affect your child’s mood in school, give the teacher a heads-up. Help them help your child by keeping the lines of communication open. “Do be a do bee” Volunteering your time is a practical way to help your child’s teacher. Leading a reading group or putting 14 Style’s School Guide-2018-19 schoolguideonline.com
up bulletins or stocking supplies are all hugely helpful, but not all parents have time to give during the day. That’s okay. Perhaps you have some dressmaking skills, or you’re a keen video editor, or you’ve created a few websites in your day. There may be tangible skills that you can offer to the teacher outside of the normal workday for fund-raising events or school concerts. Is there busywork that you can do at home, like collating handouts or cutting out letters? Offering an extra pair of hands or a marketable skill can go a long way to helping your child’s teacher. Raise expectations Independence is a big part of the classroom experience and one that can be reflected at home. Parental instincts can sometimes kick in too quickly (i.e., the parent quickly handles problems that could be solved by the child). Model questions like: “How would you solve this at school?” to encourage problem-solving skills. Definitely avoid the temptation to “finesse” or complete assigned work for them. Your role is to guide and advise, but be mindful that it’s not at the expense of your child’s learning experience. Show gratitude Parenting can be thankless, but there are times when your child will melt your heart with a well-placed thank you or a kiss on the cheek. Teachers sometimes find themselves drowning in endless feedback about what they’re not doing or should be doing. All it can take is a heartfelt thank-you note to remind a teacher why they do what they do for your child and change their day completely. You don’t have to buy an expensive gift or lead a parade, but a thoughtful gift or expression of gratitude here and there can be just the invigoration the soul needs.

PRESCHOOLS
PRESCHOOL encompasses some of the most exciting and enriching years of a child’s life. During
these developmental years, children absorb information at extremely rapid speeds, expressing interest and curiosities in every new discovery. Most preschools include 3-5 year olds, although each is unique with varying teaching styles and curriculum. Early childhood programs are a great way for young kids to
develop communication skills, as well as a knowledge and understanding of the world. Through daily inter-
action in a classroom setting with other children, preschoolers experience personal, social, and emotional development as well.
Due to an increase in maternal employment rates, national anti-poverty initiatives, and research show-
ing the link between early childhood experiences and the brain development of young children, 4 year olds enrolled in formal education has skyrocketed from 10% in 1960 to almost 70% today. The greater Sacramento
region offers countless programs designed to meet the different needs of each child. Some of the most prevalent include Montessori,
Waldorf,
and
Reggio Emilia, as well
as religious, community, and cooperative
approaches to early
education. Preschool is a perfect time to
introduce complicated subjects to children in creative and enriching
ways through exploration of letters, sounds,
colors, shapes, numbers, drawings, and much more.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS
Before deciding on the right school for their child, parents must first make the choice between PRIVATE and public education. With tuition costs, academic courses, location, and other factors to weigh in, finding the right fit may take some time. There are several benefits of the private school education system, with specialized instruction from welltrained teachers, to stronger sports programs and close religious affiliations among the most praised. According to the National Center for Education, 80% of private schools in the United States are affiliated with a particular religion, while the remaining 20% consist of nonsectarian schools such as Montessori, Waldorf, and Country Day. With more than 140 private schools in the greater Sacramento region, there are a variety of programs to accommodate a wide range of expectations and interests. A private education is great for those looking for teaching styles and practices not commonly found in public education. The Waldorf system, for example, believes in introducing traditional academic subjects later on in life, around the age of 7, while focusing heavily on imaginative and creative activities at a younger age. According to the Private School Review, there are approximately 19,000 students in the Sacramento region enrolled in private education with an average teacher student ratio of 13:1.

CHARTER SCHOOLS
The Charter school system is a growing educational movement becoming more popular over the last decade. They are simply public schools which function
under a contract or “chartered” agreement with an authorizing
agency. These agencies range
from parent or teacher groups, to small business and nonprofits. Charter schools are
required by law to be non-dis-
criminatory, serve all students including those with disabilities, and partake in their state’s
testing and accountability systems.
They are essentially a school of choice, meaning that parents chose to enroll their students, as opposed
to being assigned to a school by a district. They have the freedom and ability to pursue specific educational objectives while generally offering smaller class sizes with fewer students. No two charter schools are the same; some cater to students interested in technology and the arts, while some have language immersion
specific programs or assist students with behavioral challenges. A parent’s freedom to choose programs they
feel best fit their child’s educational need is the main reason these schools continue to flourish. With nearly 3
million students attending over 6500 schools in the nation, 43 states and the District of Colombia have already enacted laws protecting and promoting charter programs.

SPECIAL NEEDS
Raising a child with special needs comes with a set of responsibilities not familiar to most parents. Often it can seem overwhelming to make sense of your child’s needs while assuring they are properly edu-
cated alongside their peers. Since the 1970’s, public schools have provided some form of special education services. In 2004, the Disabilities Education act also known as IDEA required local educational agencies to
provide “specially defined instruction, and related services, at no cost to parents, to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability”. This essentially created IEP’s or Individualized Education Programs in which
school districts ensured all students received the instruction and care they need. Most districts provide support services for students until the age of 21/22, as well as assist parents and students with necessary transitioning steps.
Districts such as San Juan Unified in Sacramento County implement their own educational plan and are
responsible for creating their own policies, procedures and programs. They provide educational services to over 4700 students, employing more than 500 special education teachers, specialists and instructional
assistants. They are incorporated into what is known as a Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA), which covers the districts within Sacramento County. Placer and El Dorado Counties are in separate regions but still follow the SELPA plan, ensuring all special needs students are integrated into public schools.

aving kids is hard. Rewarding, but hard. And there are millions of parents who have children with reading difficulties, which in turn makes parenting even more challenging. Did you know that children who aren’t reading proficiently by fourth grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school and have a 38 Style’s School Guide-2018-19 schoolguideonline.com
difficult time with vocabulary and writing? Furthermore, children who encounter reading complications also struggle in all other subjects. With Common Core being implemented in California, even math classes include a large amount of text and comprehending word problems. Reading well correlates with academic success through all grade levels. Learning Ally—a program that
aids students (and adults) struggling with reading and comprehension—is a helpful tool. At first glance, it’s simply audiobooks. However, when children use the program, not only can they hear the words, but they can also read along visually on their phone, tablet, or computer. Another great feature is when the narrator reads the words aloud they’re highlighted on the device; for a child whose brain

may wander for a moment, this is crucial to helping them find their place in the book. Learning Ally’s books are also read by people! Companies such as Bookshare, an online company for those with print disabilities, offer audiobooks with mostly computergenerated voices. Unfortunately, this results in a lack of inflection, variation, and change of tone. Learning Ally has over 80,000
human-read books in their library, including textbooks. Each table, graph, chart, and picture within the text is also explained. Kids can place bookmarks, take notes within the program, and easily navigate through pages, chapters, and sections. Danielle Horneman, instructional strategist with El Dorado County, CARE, says, “Learning Ally provides an avenue for struggling readers, not only at the lower grade levels, but also in high school. Students have access to required readings, such as To Kill a Mockingbird and Romeo and Juliet, allowing students to follow along, hearing proper pronunciation and dictation. I find the biggest undertaking for students at the higher-grade levels is the lack of proper dictation, blurring a story into one big mess (like a runon sentence) when they read. When they’re done, these struggling readers have no idea what was read, as the story is jumbled. Learning Ally allows students to focus on content while being exposed to higher-level vocabulary, proper pronunciation, and dictation.” The most tremendous benefit for those using Learning Ally is the ability for children to access gradelevel content, gaining the same information and vocabulary as their peers. By providing students with the ability to read independently and read the same content as their fellow students, you will give them the give of knowledge and selfconfidence that follows them into adulthood. ART - MUSIC - THEATER - DANCE
Arts programs offer vast after school activities for children, enriching their lives in more ways than just learning a new skill or talent. Art, music, theater and dance encompass the different types of creative and performing art schools with countless academies and programs offered to students across the greater Sacramento region. Creativity, confidence, perseverance, non-verbal communication, focus, and accountability are among the vast array of life skills children develop from exposure to the arts. Learning a musical instrument improves motor, visual learning, and language development skills the same way learning a foreign language might. Through theater and plays, children are able to express brand new emotions, often times developing empathy and compassion by identifying with the characters they are portraying. Art galleries provide environments for developing cultural awareness, and they introduce children to different types of paintings, sculptures, and styles of art. Crocker Art Museum in downtown Sacramento and Blue Line Arts in Roseville offer educational programs for students. Dancing is a wonderful way for kids to stay active, learn motor and movement skills which can be carried over to a number of careers and professions. Styles such as Ballet significantly relieve stress and promote flexibility, body awareness, and better posture, increasing self-esteem and a child’s ability to express themselves to their peers. These are among the most valuable benefits of enrolling in performing arts. The Arts have always been pioneers of self-expression and should be integrated into the life of every child.

TUTORING
Finding the right tutor for your child is imperative in ensuring their academic success. Different factors to take into consideration include the child’s areas of struggle as well as the types of tutoring programs
available. Homework helpers, test-prep, and general tutors are the most common in assisting students from preschool through college with day to day assignments and preparing for standardized or specialized admission tests. These types usually work best for children who perform at grade level but need a little help
or guidance with organization, time management, and study skills. When a student is struggling to grasp and understand an educational concept as a whole, specialty subject tutors are usually the best fit, with centers focusing solely in English or Math assistance.
Tutoring programs range from learning centers and after school study halls to private tutors and those
qualified to assist with special needs. Although tutors are usually for assistance to meet grade level standards, they can also help with enrichment for children eager to excel at rates faster than in a standard
classroom. There are ample after school programs for gifted children or those who wish to learn a subject not generally taught in elementary, middle or high schools.

SPORTS - SWIMMING - MARTIAL ARTS
Sports activities encourage children to live healthy and active lifestyles. From basketball and soccer leagues, to gymnastics, martial
arts, rock climbing, cheerleading, swimming and so much more, the
greater region of Sacramento is known for its wide variety of youth sports programs and organizations. Some of the most prevalent in the area are swim leagues and soccer clubs, both offering recreational and competitive options depending on skill and level of interest. If your child
is unsure of which activities best suits them, enrolling in recreational sports are a great way for them to explore areas of interest, while
expanding their social circles to find like-minded individuals that share similar interests and goals.
Pushing a healthy active lifestyle, promoting self-esteem, and intro-
ducing the importance of teamwork are among the most common
benefits of enrolling children in youth sports. They also have the ability to train children to develop professional skills, from setting long term
goals, to understanding the concepts of time management and priorities. With childhood obesity at an all-time high in the United States,
promoting physical exercise beginning at a young age is extremely important. Countless studies have drawn positive conclusions and made links between children enrolled in youth sports, and overall wellness of mind, body, and spirit.

What better way for children to occupy their recess Summer months than with exciting and enriching camps! Each year millions of students throughout the United States attend day and over-
night camps where creating a safe, educational environment is the
top concern for staff leaders and organizers. These programs provide opportunities for children to explore areas of interest unavailable to
them during the school year. Sacramento offers a variety of programs ranging from physical activities such as sports and outdoor adven-
ture camps to more educationally focused pastimes. Art and technology camps are also prevalent, exposing children to exciting themes they will likely encounter later on in high school or college.
Apart from the obvious benefit of keeping your child active, camps offer ways for kids to learn social skills,
grow independence, gain resilience, and much more. Outdoor and overnight camps are helpful for unplug-
ging from technology and reconnecting with nature. Being on their own teaches children the importance of independence and making executive decisions for themselves without the guidance of teachers and parents.
Day camps keep kids occupied while still being close to home. The change from overly booked school year schedules is a good break for children to enjoy unstructured play and free time.

MUSEUMS, ZOOS AND MORE
When the weekend comes around, and kids are free from their school week responsibilities, what better way to occupy their time than with exciting trips to museums, zoos, and more! Museums are a great place to introduce children to different aspects of history. There are several in Sacramento including
an automobile and railroad museum where children can take a peek into the past and learn how their ancestors traveled.
The Sacramento area is also known for the zoo
in Land Park and for the zoo and wildlife sanctuary Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary
in Folsom. These are excellent places for kids to
get in tune with nature and learn important infor-
mation about animal protection and conservation. Zoos and museums often have educational classes and programs incorporated into their facilities.
With the capital of California located in downtown Sacramento, there are countless tours and programs designed
to introduce politics and government to children in exciting ways. Children have a chance to engage with state political leaders and gain a better understanding of how the political system works. Along with the Capitol building, there
are several historic sites preserved by the state including Sutter’s Fort located in midtown Sacramento. This is a fun and historic place to teach kids about the first pilgrims and pioneers that settled in this area hundreds of years ago!

encouraging creativity by Sharon Penny
T
he biggest misconception about creativity is that “you either have it or you don’t,” and without realizing it parents can often close the doors to their children’s creativity because they feel they lack the required talent themselves. The good news is it’s not true. Talent is not required—just positivity. Creativity is like a plant, and with some care and attention you can help grow and encourage creativity in your child, and yourself, with just a few simple approaches. Walk this way Model the behavior you want to see in your child. If you want to encourage their creativity, encourage it in yourself as well. Draw with them. While they’re engaged in quiet reading, pick up a book and read as well. Take a class in something creative that interests you so your child can see you’re learning, too. This is important especially if you don’t consider yourself to be creative. The important thing is to show your child that creativity isn’t good or bad, but rather that it’s fun and can be part of your everyday life. “Yes, and?” One of the simplest ways to encourage creativity is in conversation. Ask your child for suggestions for a creative project. “How should we display these old photos?” “What can we use to make a bird feeder?” Resist the temptation to assess their ideas. There are no bad ideas in brainstorming. Any rain is good rain! Encourage them to expand the ideas with open questions: “Ooh, that’s interesting. How would we do that do you think?” Write their ideas down, and then have your child pick their favorite one. Not the best idea, but the one that sparks their creativity the most. A space of their own Whether it’s a table in their bedroom, the attic, the garage, or the playhouse in the Style’s School Guide-2018-19 schoolguideonline.com 63
“As a parent you have a unique opportunity to be the creative spark. “You know what I’d really love today? A puppet.” A simple open-ended request can launch a new adventure.”
backyard, set a creative space for your child. Encourage them to pin up some of their artwork, or pictures from their favorite books or artists to inspire them. Facilitate simple creative tools in the space like pencils, crayons, chalk, a tub of weird old clothes and fabric off-cuts for costumes, a tub of “odds and ends” like toilet rolls and bubble wrap, a big box of Lego. Make it a space where “anything can happen.” Keep it loose Unstructured free time is fertilizer for creativity. Give children time where they can play and create on their own, and resist the temptation to manage. Provide a creative suggestion if they need it, but make it a time for their ideas, not yours. Avoid the temptation to quality control or limit the scope of their activities. Give them the confidence to be inspired. Facilitate to create As a parent you have a unique opportunity to be the creative spark. “You know what I’d really love today? A puppet.” A simple open-ended request can launch a new adventure. Or play creative games together. My niece and I used to love playing “Monster” (some people call it Folded Monster, or Make a Monster): You can play with two people or a group. (If you have a large group, give everyone a piece of paper and have them pass to the left.) Take a blank piece of paper. Draw a head with a face, and two lines for a neck. Fold it over to hide it and pass it on. Whoever’s next draws the arms and the body; next the leg/s; and then 64 Style’s School Guide-2018-19 schoolguideonline.com
feet, covering each section as you go. Then when you’re done, you unfold it to reveal a crazy new creature! Encourage your child to give it a name and a backstory, or channel it into creative writing through a song or a poem. Another simple and inexpensive game is to get your hands on a large cardboard box, provide some markers, and ask your child: “What is it?” Let their imagination run wild. Broaden horizons Cultural experiences are great for creativity. Zoos, museums, galleries, and libraries are bursting with tools to send your child’s creative mind
shooting off in a hundred new directions. If you’re a parent who doesn’t normally go to the local art museum or gallery, take a deep breath, and become that parent. Instead of taking an official tour, take a tour of the imagination. Let your child pick their favorite works of art and tell you the story of it. Don’t get hung up on what it “should” be—be guided by your child’s imagination, and participate in the conversation by asking questions and asking them about unusual details in the painting. When you get home look up their favorite artworks or artists and talk about who made them. Start a new conversation.
PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Sacramento area boasts some of the top scoring public school districts in the state of California. With almost 30 districts spanning across Sacramento, Placer, and El Dorado County, there are several unique offerings and qualities to these schools, which differentiate them from one another. Each student is assigned a district and school respectively based on their home address. Most districts
include charter or open enrollment options, meaning that students are not necessarily forced to attend their assigned school. The ability to move schools within a district through open enrollment gives parents and
students more freedom and choices within the public school system. Although it is a much harder process, students may apply for district transfers, with priorities given to students interested in specific programs not offered within their district.
Each district is equipped with educational resources to accommodate a vast array of students from those
needing special assistance and guidance to those wanting more rigorous and challenging courses. Programs
such as the International Baccalaureate, Rapid Learner, and GATE are for gifted students who excel at rates faster than the average student. These programs challenge students to explore curriculum not generally found
in the public school system. Almost all public high schools in the state of California offer some form of Honors
or Accelerated Programs (AP) for certain classes. Students who are qualified have the ability to receive college credits upon completing these courses and passing an exam. Some students are able to complete an entire semester or even a year of college courses for a fraction of the price!
There are countless other benefits to attending free public schools in Sacramento, Placer, and El Dorado
Counties, including a focus in language, arts, and physical activities. Most schools introduce some form of sec-
ondary language instruction in Elementary and Middle School, with all high schools offering Spanish classes at the least. Physical Education is not only a state requirement, but also an important way to keep kids active and healthy throughout their school year.
Districts are unique in educational offerings but all follow the same guidelines laid out by the state of Cali-
fornia. Parent support is often required to ensure extra-curricular activities and programs are not eliminated due to budget shortfalls. The public school districts in the greater region of Sacramento have done an exceptional job in educating students and preparing them for college and life after school.
