I
f you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? For me, the answer is easy. Pizza. It’s acceptable for breakfast (I take mine fresh out of the fridge), lunch, dinner, and every meal in between. Plus, there’s enough variety (sauces, crusts, baking vessels, toppings) that I don’t think my taste buds would ever find a slice that wasn’t nice. Come to think of it, I’ve never met a pie that didn’t catch my eye; even frozen pizzas are my friend. With that said, some are certainly better than others and receive rave reviews for a reason. In-season ingredients, dough handling, a suitable sauce to cheese ratio…all this, and more, plays into the finished product. In this month’s feature, “Pie Oh My!” (page 61), we share 25+ out-of-the-pizza-box creations that’ll hopefully have you hungry to branch out of your (thin… or maybe thick) crust comfort zone and explore more of our region’s praiseworthy pizzerias. What else comes to mind when you think of pizza? Wine, of course. A full-bodied red alongside a pepperoni-topped pie is a match made in food pairing heaven. When it comes to picking out that perfect bottle, however, remember to be mindful of supporting a local—and sustainable—vineyard. Now, more than ever, preserving the land while producing world-class wines is essential. Wondering which area wineries put the environment first? Check out “Down to Earth” (page 94) for four of our favorites. If you’re looking for one last hurrah before summer comes “Ideas are to a close, consider a staycation. In “Vacation by Design” like pizza (page 54), we share some hip home rentals that aren’t only aesthetically appealing but sited within walking distance to dough, a trove of treasures, too—from Apple Hill to Historic Folsom made to to Old Town Auburn. It’s a good reminder that getting away doesn’t always mean going far away. be tossed What else comes with the changing seasons? A change in around.” your wardrobe. For readers wondering what to wear when the temps dip down, we turned to the pros—personal stylists —Anna Quindlen to be exact—and asked them how to look fresh this fall. Flip to “Dress Code” (page 48) for their top style tips, plus a list of local boutiques we love. One trend that never goes out of style? Supporting small businesses. So, whether you’re deciding where to pick up tonight’s pizza or what to do this weekend, I encourage you to choose the mom-and-mom places featured in this month’s magazine. Cheers! —Megan megan@stylemg.com @meggoeggowaffle

What’s your favorite style of
pizza?
“I’ll be ejected from my hometown of Chicago if I don’t say stuffed pizza from Giordano’s! But, being married to an East Coaster, I must admit that I’ve come to love NY-style thincrust. (Just don’t tell my Chicago friends!)”—Wendy Sipple

“I don’t discriminate when it comes to pizza and will never say no to a slice, but New York-style is certainly my preferred pie. I love its foldability, crisp crust, and simple, straightforward toppings.”—Megan Wiskus

GRAND OLD TIME Celebrating Grandparents by TARA MENDANHA
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again—grandparents are meant to be cherished. The time you spend with them is unlike any other and we often fail to grasp how profound those moments are. Let’s celebrate our grandparents by lending a helpful hand, offering an extra hug, or saying a simple “thank you” or “I love you” this Grandparents’ Day (September 12). Cheers to all the wonderful grandparents in our community, including the ones below. 70- to 85-year-old ladies bopping to Motown!
What lessons do you hope to impart to your grandchildren? Be kind, be a hard worker, be polite, and ignore bullies—they’re mean because they’re sad. Keep active. Always face your fears and keep learning no matter how old you are. Granddad taught Grandma Kim to swim when she turned 50 and now, she’s a fish in water! When Grandma Kim shares her stories, she makes sure there are lessons to be learned—and somehow there are always laughs to be had, too.
Kimberly and Michael Quail, “Grandma Kim and Grandpa,” Auburn
Mike is a hardworking senior vice president and general manager of a global company. After postings across the U.S. and Shanghai, he decided to move back to Auburn to help care for the grandkids “who still think we’re cool enough to hang out with.” Despite his workload, he manages to focus on family and plans to fly fish, kayak, and travel after retiring. Most of all, he’s looking forward to “hanging out at the pool with family.” His pool pals are Mikaila (12), an ace student who’s independent, emotionally intelligent, and athletic (she plays both volleyball and basketball); and Preston (10), the jokester in the family who loves music, video games, and playing football and basketball (he throws

What’s the best part about being a grandparent?
Grandma "Kim" took Mikaila for sushi and while the waiter was taking their order she exclaimed, “I love sushi—it’s my favorite food!” then proceeded to order chicken teriyaki.
Being involved and having an important role in shaping the kids’ values, morals, and personalities. We get to have fun with them and hopefully influence who they are becoming without the challenges of day-to-day life. We're able to focus on each child, listen to what they have to say and how they’re feeling, be a confidante, and be silly with them, while being a safe place to land when life becomes confusing.
How do you spend time with your grandkids? Day visits and sleepovers at our house, playing with our pets, swimming races, playing board games, watching movies, sushi dinners out, cooking together (Preston is a master griller), or just talking (the kids are always asking Grandma Kim for life stories). When having sleepovers on Tuesday nights, both kids join the Wednesday water aerobics class that Kim organizes for the neighborhood ladies. So, it’s two tall, lanky kids in the pool with Grandma Kim and the

What lessons do you hope to impart to your grandchildren?
Abuelito says grandparenting is the best of both worlds. I’m able to grow a relationship with them without all the sleepless nights, dirty diapers, and discipline! Oma totally agrees and will add how heart-warming it is to hear a little voice call out “Oma, Oma!”
Honesty, tolerance, kindness, understanding of others, and a good work ethic. It’s important that the girls, especially, respect themselves, be independent, and stand up for what they believe in. If you ask the kids, they’ll tell you: “You don’t lie and don’t curse in G’ma’s house.”

Ever since, they’ve completed numerous home improvement projects. “We’re constantly fixing something or constructing something; we’re always buying a new tool!” says Marilyn. They’ve also embarked upon many road trips—including one to Alaska. Their children started their families young, which meant Marilyn and Tom became grandparents at 43 and great-grandparents at 68. Allison (31) is a loving mom and natural leader; Brittany (29) is outspoken, loves tattoos, and is a doting mom herself; Amy (27) is a friendly mom with a beautiful voice; Kimberly (26) is a soft-spoken Disney fan; Josh (21) is loving and wants to become a police officer; Zach (18) is energetic, creative, and autistic; and Henry (6) loves mechanics and is learning karate. Great grandbabies include Emma (5) who’s got red hair and a fiery personality to match; Jackson (5) who’s shy and loves tools and music; Melanie (1) who’s fearless, inquisitive, and isn’t sure about being a big sister; Westley (2 months) who loves when big brother Jack rubs his head; and Reign (2 months) who bites through binkies and isn’t too sure about big sister Melanie either.
What’s the best part about being a grandparent? They keep us young and challenged. Each personality is different and interesting to know. We love that even at their current ages, we still have good relationships with them. I (Marilyn) am still one of their go-to people when they have issues.
We always talk about Grandpa’s babysitting skills. Like when he fell asleep, and the kids decided their hair was too long. They cut their hair and all the dolls’ hair before Grandpa woke up!
Steve and Marina Rogers, “Abuelito and Oma,” Orangevale Marina retired six years ago after 20 years of homeschooling four sons through 12th grade. “[It’s] my biggest accomplishment!” she says with pride. All four even graduated from four-year colleges. She now spends her time alongside younger moms attending the MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) program or with those going through the Grief Share program at their church. Steve retired this year—after 32 years primarily teaching English in public schools to immigrants and refugees—partly to be able to spend more time with his three grandchildren. He loves sports and learning new languages, which he says plays a part in “how I interact with my grandchildren.” The three babes include Lukas (2), an incredibly tech-savvy, active little boy who loves sports and is learning Spanish; Ellaline (5 months), the first granddaughter who’s full of giggles and loves watching his older brother Lukas; and Gabriel (3 months) who is basking in all the attention.
How do you spend time with your grandkids? We LOVE to hold and sing to our two youngest grandchildren, look at their faces, and marvel at their beauty. As for Lukas, it can range from reading books, to throwing rocks, shooting hoops, kicking a soccer ball, and blowing bubbles—all in the course of one packed afternoon!
What lessons do you hope to impart to your grandchildren? Oma: I want them to learn how important it is to stop, be still, and listen to God speak. Mother Teresa said, “Out of the silence of the heart, God speaks.” I believe it’s important to hear His voice in this fast-paced, stressful world. They also need to learn how to have good coping skills to successfully navigate the pressure of life. Abuelito: I want them to learn that their God-given feelings are very important…and to acknowledge and manage the especially difficult feelings of anger, fear, and sadness instead of neglecting them.
Tell us a funny/poignant anecdote about your grandkids. While sitting on the shore of Lake Tahoe throwing rocks at a small buoy, Lukas wasn’t as able as his abuelito to hit their target. Abuelito wanted to help Lukas know that hard things can be accomplished if he keeps trying. So Abuelito said: “sí se puede” (meaning “yes you can”). Sure enough, when Abuelito threw the next few rocks, Lukas responded: “sí se puede.”
The four girls live close by, so babysitting and activities are a constant: trips to the ocean, zoos, museums, cruises, camping, and many more excursions every year. Also, cooking and crafts at home and teaching them how to drive. Three of the girls lived with us for a while. We still meet for lunches and play dates. Now with the great-

Disability Visibility Programs with Purpose by TARA MENDANHA
According to the CDC, 26% of adults have some type of disability in the U.S. Disability comes in many forms: conditions present at birth, disorder of chromosomes (like Down syndrome), developmental conditions (like autism spectrum disorder), injury-related, and progressive (like muscular dystrophy), among others. Although “people with disabilities” sometimes refers to a single population, the term actually covers a diverse group of people with a wide range of needs. Luckily, our region is home to a variety of nonprofits that advocate for equal employment, social inclusion, and an overall good quality of life for these individuals.

Off the Wall 4 MUST-SEE MURALS by BELLA NOLEN
Celebrating history and innovation in our community, local artist Oran Miller recently finished a mural inside the Thompson Jeep Automall in Placerville. After roughly 100 hours of work, Miller’s piece depicts the significance of the Rubicon Trail’s history. “It goes back to just after World War II,” Miller

Art is everywhere if we know where to look. Whether on a brick wall, inside restaurants, or in the heart of a community, local artists have given us the gift of art that embodies nature, culture, and history. The very buildings that have been a part of the hustle and bustle of our lives have become a canvas— an opportunity to remind us of our past, the beauty of the present, and the possibilities of the future.

explains. “When the soldiers came home—they had a need for adventure, and the Rubicon provided that.” The mural consists of a roadmap, starting at the dealership (to commemorate the mural’s location), to Walker Hill, Loon Lake, Lake Tahoe, and other spots along the trail. Throughout the route are four different styles
of Jeeps, the last one a depiction of “early Jeepers in their C.J. (Civilian Jeep) models, cruising around the corner and enjoying freedom and [family].” Ultimately, Miller’s mural allows us to take a step back in time while remaining rooted in the present. @oran_miller.com
Since childhood, local artist Silvie Park has dabbled with many mediums: drawing, painting, ceramics, and murals. After coming across a photo of a pair of wings located in Nashville, TN, Park was instantly reminded of Folsom’s Historic District and the culture so heavily engrained in the downtown area. From there, the artist’s creativity gave flight to her first mural: a pair of angel wings that she donated as a voluntary community service project. The city’s motto, “Distinctive by Nature,” influenced her decision to make the mural nature-themed, which gave way to her research put into the project. Combining Folsom’s outdoorsy, culturally rich heritage—including features like the Rainbow Bridge, Johnny Cash’s hat, a bike wheel, and Winnie the Sutter Street Pig—the mural, sited on the corner of Sutter Street and Wool Street (on the side of Dorothea’s Shoppe) was created. @silviepark

Located at Acton Academy Placer in Roseville, local artists Joshua Lawyer and M.J. Lindo-Lawyer collaborated on a mural titled Drawn to Each Other. M.J. kickstarted the process by choosing a reference they had photographed. Afterward, she created an outline of the main figure, and in turn, her husband Joshua was able to build upon it fashioning a story out of the art. Together they produced a narrative of what Joshua explains as “the natural attraction of a bee and a flower.” Then, there is a trail the bees are following, which Joshua says is “kind of a fragrance [the female] puts out.” When discussing the motivation for the piece, Joshua explains that they wanted “the narrative [to] be pretty playful and work in a school setting.” The difficulty, however, was in maintaining the simplicity of the mural’s narrative, which stretches across three walls of a cubeshaped building—a challenge the two overcame together. The final piece offers us a story of the natural attraction found in nature and between individuals, whether it be friends or more, and serves as an excellent piece for an educational setting. @joshuathelawyer @mjlindo

Inviting us to dive into Roseville’s David R. Johnson Memorial Pool is Esther Chow’s mural, Land and Sea, comprised of mesmerizing designs and the use of vibrant colors. The piece took about 12 days, says Chow, having collaborated with fellow artist Zoey Rosenthal. “We wanted something bright, fresh, and fun—something that would appeal to the community, especially the children and teens who frequent the pool.” As Chow contributed patterns and colors to the piece, her partner presented a bold composition and her love of animals, like the giant octopus. “The design was done in two phases” Chow further explains. After gaining approval for their first draft done on gouache, they created a mock-up on Photoshop to project the image onto the wall and then traced the outline with graphite. “Since the projection only works at night, we were on the streets till 3 a.m. the first day to get the design onto the wall,” explains Chow. Despite the grueling heat, Chow and her partner finished the mural, which celebrates the playful nature of the environment and our community while encouraging us to partake in our own fun, too. @estherchow_art

No Worries 7 Natural Ways to Treat Anxiety by BELLA NOLEN
Although anxiety can be confusing and often scary, that doesn’t mean treating it has to be. Natural therapies are great for recognizing and reducing symptoms while helping to alleviate other health issues, too. Revolutions Naturopathic. She suggests nutrient therapy, balancing gut bacteria, recognizing food sensitives, or even identifying toxic environmental exposures to relieve anxiety. If our environment is in fact the cause of our anxiety, then Dr. Raithel encourages us to “remove [ourselves] from that influence,” and shake things up by going on a mini-vacation or exercising.

As simple as it sounds, taking a moment to assess what’s causing our anxiety is a large part of treating it, especially long-term. Pamela Connor from Connor Wellness Clinic tells us that it’s vital to get to the root of our anxiety, and “there can often be more than one cause.” We are all experiencing life at the same time but in a different manner, which means that the root of our anxiety is unique to us as individuals. This uniqueness is what makes recognizing it a crucial first step to treating it.

With multiple responsibilities and stresses, we’re bound to run into anxiety now and again. However, anxiety doesn’t always stem from external forces either. “Most of the serotonin produced in the body is produced in the gut. If our gut health is out of balance, our neurotransmitters may also be out of whack,” says Michele Raithel, ND, at

Sorrentino also teaches her clients with anxiety to meditate. Similar to breathing techniques, meditation can also be done at home or in a space we feel comfortable in. “Breathing and relaxation are the foundations of meditation. Meditating daily will start to change the neuro pathways in our brain to produce a calmer [mindset], lower our blood pressure, and make us more mindful,” she says. One of the other bonuses of this natural treatment is that meditation doesn’t have to take up too much of our time throughout the day; even 5-10 minutes of meditation is enough to achieve benefits.

We’re breathing every second of every day but knowing how to control it allows us to recenter ourselves and ease our anxiety. “Our heart rate and breathing increase to protect us from perceived danger,” explains Therese Sorrentino, a licensed marriage and family therapist. Sorrentino advises clients to practice deep diaphragmatic breathing—a technique that helps relax muscles and encourages us to be mindful of what we’re feeling and why we feel the way we do. Breath control works out the feelings and thoughts muddled by anxiety through the easy task of inhaling deeply through the nose and drawing a breath from the stomach; when exhaling, keep abdominal muscles tight and allow the stomach to sink.

but it’s great for our mental and emotional physique, too. “Getting your heart rate up changes brain chemistry, increasing the availability of important anti-anxiety neurochemicals, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin,” says Lisa Robinson from Roseville Health & Wellness Center. These vital chemicals can influence our daily moods, which makes exercising a great way to ease stress. What’s more, working out helps transport us into a new setting where we can prioritize the activity at hand, acting as a temporary distraction, too.

Another way to treat anxiety comes from a naturally occurring chemical compound found in cannabis and hemp plants, known as CBD. It is often used to reduce inflammation and amplify relaxation and may be used in relieving anxiety. CBD has also been proven to aid in anxiety-induced sleep problems and been implemented in treating PTSD and social anxiety. “It is best when used as a supplement over time and not one time,” explains Eric Luchini, marketing and communications director at Kolas, and Dana Caylor, director of training at Kolas University.

It’s remained one of the strongest surviving towns founded in the Gold Rush era, in part due to ’60s-era entrepreneurs and the unshakeable spirit of community that now defines it. r. Bogard has a long history in the health field. From an RN to a nurse anesthetist to an anesthesiologist, she spent almost 40 years in the operating room. She was exposed to critical care, trauma, obstetrics, lots of on call hours and sleepless nights. As she entered her 50's she found her own health starting to decline and sought out a healthy aging physician. After experiencing the benefits she sought out the fellowship of regenerative and healthy aging through the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. She opened an office in 2014 and continues to grow and expand her knowledge into this evolving field of medicine. Rather than prescribing medications and bandaging diseases she looks for the "root causes" and integrates each system in the body together. She also looks at environmental, genetic and lifestyle factors which result in "dis-ease". Her continued and expanding practice utilizes bioidentical hormone replacement, thyroid and adrenal optimization, GI healing, testing for heavy metals and IV nutrition and chelation, advanced lipid testing, and advanced blood sugar testing. aring for patients for over 25 years as a family practice physician has been very rewarding to me. Augmenting my traditional medicine practice with functional and regenerative medicine has inspired me to find the root cause of patients’ illnesses while also bringing them to their optimal health from the inside out. Feeling well is the primary goal. I have incorporated many modalities to keep patients living lives to their fullest. Growing up in Hawaii, I enjoyed being in a naturally healthy environment and I found myself wanting to promote health in others. Becoming a physician, and traveling a path ranging from serving as President of my medical school class to serving as a Chief Resident of the U.C. Davis Department of Family and Community Medicine, allowed me to develop a solid foundation for having an active presence in the lives of my patients and finding deep satisfaction in seeing them thrive. In my practice, I promote attainment of key health objectives by encouraging, among other things, lifestyle changes, supplementation, energy medicine, low intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy, platelet rich plasma, myofascial release therapy, PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field therapy), and ION Cleanse to benefit and enrich my patients’ lives. Most recently, I have begun utilizing the OPUS microfractional plasma system to rejuvenate facial skin, bringing my patients even closer to optimal health, so that they can not only feel their best, but also look their best.

Fall Fashion Tips TOTALLY ‘80s Eighties-inspired everything is back and better than before. All-American sportwear brands like Nike, Adidas, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Gap provide the perfect pieces for outfit inspiration. Pick up a preppy polo and rework that track suit.
compiled by MEGAN WISKUS
Cooler weather is (hopefully) headed our way soon, and with it comes a change in what we wear. Wondering what this season’s staples are going to be? Keep reading for some top style tips and fashion-forward looks that are sure to turn heads this fall.
IN THE (MINI) BAG Big things come in small packages, literally, this season, as classic silhouettes are reworked into condensed yet statement-making clutches.
LUXE LOGOS From gilded to gorge, luxe logo clasps have returned as a hardware essential for autumn’s most coveted “it” bags.
TAKE SHAPE This fall, cropped cardigans play alongside oversized blazers and puffers. Regardless of your age, you can stay current if you pay attention to trending silhouettes. Pair shorter shapes with a higher-waisted pant or skirt that meets at your midriff.
BOUDOIR IS BACK
POPS OF COLOR After a dark year, everyone seems to be craving color. Cheer up your stale wardrobe with bright, happy hues—from bubblegum pink to neon green. If you usually gravitate toward neutrals, try a bold shoe or accessory.

This season’s hautest kicks infuse uptown elegance with downtown edge. Chic utility boots will reign supreme with heavy-duty silhouettes and heavy-metal accents.

Seventies-inspired silhouettes look cool and add a real retro appeal. For a more contemporary take on the trend, look for pieces like Chanel’s angular, black glasses with dark tinted lenses.

Be on the lookout for lots of lace or subtle hints of it. You don’t have to show a lot of skin to incorporate this trend. You can be completely covered in an all-lace top or throw a cool leather jacket over a slip dress or satin camisole.

Favorite food: Dos Coyotes. I picked my salon’s location for a reason! Last big purchase: A house in Placerville. High Street House Located in Auburn
Locals looking for a weekend getaway and some inspiration for remodeling their older, cramped spaces will want to spend a weekend at the High Street House. Sited within walking distance to both historic Old Town and Downtown Auburn—including the highly acclaimed eatery Restaurant Josephine—plus the local farmers’ market and American River Canyon, the location can’t be beat. The home, originally an office space, was completely closed off when owners Susan and Joe bought it. In just two months, they tore out a wall, added a kitchen, moved a door, and added fans, light fixtures, and new carpeting, among other features. Now, the home is modern with small touches paying homage to Auburn’s history as a Gold Rush town (“We painted the doors a golden mustard in honor of ‘Gold Country’ and the golden courthouse in Auburn,” says Susan). They also left many of the home’s older design details like crown molding and stained glass. By using bright whites with heavily contrasting pops of grey and black, the home has a bit of drama and style while still feeling bright and modern. Though they bought many luxury items (couches from Restoration Hardware and organic mattresses from local

retailer Martin Maddox), they also worked in more affordable details, like cabinets and backsplashes from Ikea. The final result? A bright, airy space with a somehow perfect mix of both country and modern details that’s easy to fall in love with. Sleeps 5

Sure, international travel and longdistance flights may be bouncing back, but that doesn’t mean your next trip has to involve a passport check and jet lag just to experience new surroundings. Northern California is one of the most beautiful places on the planet and that’s reflected in many of the homes in the area, some of which are just as lovely as any designer hotel. Whether you need inspiration for a home remodel or just want some aesthetically pleasing surroundings for a family or couples getaway, these local home rentals are some of the most architecturally and aesthetically stunning, right down to their fruit-tree gardens and original wooden beams.

Folsom Sanctuary Located in Folsom
If you need a mental break from the last year and a half (and who wouldn’t) clear your schedule and book a stay at the Folsom Sanctuary, a well-kept bungalow designed with tranquility in mind. The peaceful energy starts before even stepping foot in the house, as the exterior is lined with fruit trees and dozens of potted plants. Inside, you’ll find a roomy space decked out in muted, harmonious hues, complete with two private bedrooms and a full kitchen with dining nook. Nearly everything in the home feels simple, calming, and natural, from the live-edge wood dining table to the light blue curtains and cyprus tree stained-glass mural, which defuses the otherwise bright light streaming into the living room. The home, which the owner’s godparents bought in 1959, is

This adorable rental could be described any number of ways: rustic-chic meets vintage camp cabin, or perhaps natural farmstead meets luxury wooded getaway. No matter what words you choose, it certainly looks like the stunning home was designed by professionals. And in fact, it was. The home’s builders own Placerville Nelson Tile & Construction Co. and have been restoring and remodeling in the area for nearly four decades. This home was their “quarantine project,” and they used lumber and materials milled from trees on their family ranch to expand the space and update the cottage—giving the space an artisan look as unique as the building itself. The historical cottage dating back to the late-19th century was renovated with design elements that pay homage to its past. Inside, parts of the original wood-beam ceiling is exposed, as are richly colored hardwood floors and white shiplap walls, accented by minimalist brass hardware. The romantic woodland vibe continues outside, where a small deck overlooking the creek hosts a hot tub and fire pit, with exposed market lights hanging from the gabled roof.

originally from Prairie City, a former Gold Rush town near Sacramento. The current owner used to own an art gallery in Folsom and incorporated pieces from his collection, as well as some pieces from his artist mother, to decorate the space. They even built the shiplap design elements (like the headboards) and refinished all the walls to update the home. Sleeps 4

The “Tiny House, Tiny Farm” is a cute-as-can-be country-themed tiny house. Though it’s brand new, it was designed with vintage farmhouses in mind. Inside, you’ll find classic country details like colorful quilts and rugs, plus modern farmhouse details like a white wood-paneled interior and bold wallpaper and tile patterns. Add to that the tiny front porch and adorable dining nook for two, and the house feels like a mini farmhouse. But the twist on this tiny home is that it actually is a farmhouse—or at least a house on a farm. When you book this romantic little rental, you’ll get access to all five acres of the family-run La Bella Vito Farm and their animals like goats, pigs, ducks, and chickens. During the days, head east to the Sierra foothills to hike in Pollock Pines or Auburn, or journey west to take advantage of Sacramento’s global food scene. Sleeps 4

Any way you slice it, pizza is always a crowdpleaser. But not all pies are created equal. Whether you prefer deep-dish, Neapolitan, tavern-style, or something in between, our region delivers. Here are the top spots to snag an award-winning slice.

A flaky, buttery crust holding thick layers of mozz and hand-crushed chunky tomato sauce await when you order one of the deep-dish pies at Sacramento-area staple Chicago Fire . popular locales. The owner, Danette, serves brick-oven pies (along with a lengthy list of other foodie favorites) in a pub-like setting (think 30+ taps and plenty of TVs) that screams small-town charm. The thin, hand-rolled-to-order crusts serve as the perfect vessel for whatever sauce you select (marinara, pesto, BBQ, asiago cream, or buffalo), melty mozzarella, and an array of over-the-top toppings. Pair it with a pint and let the good times roll.
New to town, Pizza Boyz offers unusually large (no “small” pies here—only medium, large, and XL) specialty pizzas like their famous brisket, carne asada, Caribbean jerk, and cheeseburger options. They also serve more traditional toppings like garden veggie, buffalo ranch, and garlic chicken. Plentiful pizzas aside, they make killer wings with chicken tikka, spicy BBQ, and mango habanero sauces, among others. Taste buds will be tantalized, and appetites appeased at this Citrus Heights hotspot. MUST-TRY PIE: Brisket (spicy BBQ sauce, slow-cooked signature brisket, mozzarella, and red onions)

“Modern dishes that capture the flavors of the season” is the tagline of Heyday Café. And while we adore all their appetizers, entrées, and fine wines, sometimes a well-made pizza sounds equally enticing. At Heyday, said pies come with eclectic toppings (like Vancouver Island salmon with garlic cream sauce and fresh dill), along with all the classics (pepperoni and garden-fresh veggies), perfectly placed atop a chewy crust with just enough char and cheesy goodness. Pair it with a salad (they have seven to select from) and save room for the daily-made molasses gingerbread cake. Roasted Butternut Bacon (EVOO, roasted butternut squash, sautéed spinach, applewood smoked bacon, goat cheese, caramelized onions, and toasted almonds) MUST-TRY PIE:

A taste of Naples in small-town Placerville can be yours, thanks to Bene! Ristorante Italiano . Since 2014 they’ve been bringing their casual-gourmet, Neapolitanstyle pizzas to hungry patrons who can’t get enough—of both the food and lively ambiance. Whatever pie you pick, expect world-famous mozzarella di buffala imported from Naples, lovingly made dough crafted using Italian Caputo flour, ribbons of fragrantly fresh basil, and quality-youcan-taste EVOO. In other words, there’s no cutting corners at this Main Street mainstay. Thriving since 1985, Pizzeria Classico is a locally and family-owned business that truly lives up to its name. With their classic booths and checkered wall design, the atmosphere invites you to take a seat with friends and family and enjoy some quality time over quality food. Before your main meal, order the garlic chips, which have been one of their staples since the start. The true standout, however, is their Chicagostyle pizzas that range from hand-tossed and stuffed to deep-dish—all crafted from handmade dough. Locally sourced ingredients are always appealing, but when it comes to pizza, imported ingredients are equally (if not more) acceptable. At Apple Barrel Pizza , their cheese comes from one of the oldest dairy farms in California, but the crushed tomatoes used in their robust sauce are fresh from Italy, ensuring utmost authenticity. Mixed with the family’s generationsold dough recipe with secret herbs and subtle flavors—a bread that bakes up to be light, airy, and distinctly different—you’re in for a mouthwatering meal… especially when you end it with one of their homemade desserts. Spicy Hawaiian (marinara, mozzarella, Canadian bacon, pepperoni, pineapple, bacon, and tricolored jalapeños)

Classic pizza parlors can be hard to come by. Luckily, places like Pizza Plus still exist. A staple since 1993 with a heart for helping the community, they also make some seriously scrumptious pies featuring cured meats, fresh veggies, and handshredded cheese atop crust (gluten-free available, too) that’s not too thin or too thick. As Robert H. says, “The employees are friendly, prices reasonable, and the pizza is delicious.” What’s not to love? Hand-made brick-oven pizzas with primo mozzarella cheese scream sophistication at Campelli’s Pizza. On perusing the menu, you’ll find fun apps, too, like pepperoni roll-ups (kind of like pizza sushi) and Campelli’s crispers (cheesy handhelds that kids seem to love). But back to the pizza. This family-owned, family-friendly joint piles on the toppings to the point where you can’t see the base anymore! That deserves a perfect score in and of itself. They’ve also got board games and TVs and an overall welcoming vibe that’s hard to beat. Finished with a “crust topper,” like garlic butter, parmesan, or Roma seasoning, it’s a build-yourown bite you won’t be able to get enough of. But if bread is part of your diet, fret not: They have four styles of crust to pick from (original, thick, lite, or thin)—all fresh-baked and equally delicious. Whether it’s a simple pepperoni or a more indulgent meat lover’s pizza, dive into some of the best NY-style pie in town. Il Pizzaiolo was built on the premise that good pizza should never be expensive. It was, after all, considered “peasant food” in Italy. One pizza-making educational trip to Italy later and this familyowned joint was cranking out Naples-style wood-fired pizzas that got everyone talking. Whether it’s pizze rosse (pizza with crushed tomatoes) or pizze bianche (no crushed tomatoes) you’ll get a perfectly cooked pizza every time (cooked at 800 degrees for two minutes). You’ll even get a taste of the seasons with mandarins, figs, and heirloom cherry tomatoes debuting on their pizzas at different times of the year. PIE OH MY!
With pizza in their name— and glowing reviews to boot—you know the pies at Wally's Pizza Bar are something special. A blend of mozzarella, fontina, shaved parmesan, and provolone atop all their offerings ensure plenty of cheesy goodness, while a range of sauces (garlic butter, white garlic cream, BBQ, Thai curry, margherita, pesto, and marinara) keep the pizza party interesting. But it’s their fresh, never frozen Truckee Sourdough crust (a gluten-free dough is also available)—crafted from flour, water, salt, and a little sugar—that makes the slice extra nice. MUST-TRY PIE: Smokey BBQ Chicken (hickory BBQ sauce, four-cheese blend including creamy smoked gouda, oven-roasted chicken, crispy bacon, sliced red onions, and fresh cilantro)

Reasonably priced food (plus beer and a full-service wine shop) made with high-quality, locally sourced ingredients in convivial environs mean it’s perfect for families, friends, and couples alike. Though the soups, sandwiches, and burgers are all praiseworthy, their wood-fired pizzas can’t be overlooked. House-made dough (glutenfree crust is also available) is topped with tomato coulis and mouthwatering ingredient combos (chicken, mozz, parmesan, bacon, jalapenos, arugula, béchamel, and goat

Perfect for sharing alongside a veggie-packed salad and before indulging in one, or more, of their delectable desserts, there’s no going home hungry here. Whisk first three ingredients in a small bowl. Roll out pizza dough on lightly floured surface and brush olive oil mixture on top, leaving a 1-inch border. Top with chicken and mozzarella, keeping a 1-inch border. Cook in pizza oven at 750° or a 500° conventional oven until crust is golden brown. Cut the pizza and top with tomatoes, onions, and thyme. Drizzle with reserved olive oil and balsamic glaze and season with salt to taste.
PIZZA DOUGH • 1 ½ cups flour • 1 tsp. kosher salt • 1 tbsp. dry active yeast • ¾ cup warm water • ½ tsp. olive oil Put first three ingredients in a food processor. Turn on and slowly add water until the dough forms a ball without being sticky (a little less or more, as needed). Process for 1 minute. Form dough into a ball and coat with olive oil to keep it from drying out. Cover and let rest for about 30 minutes. Note: Dough rolls out to approximately 15” and can be made up to a day ahead but should be kept covered with plastic in the refrigerator. PAIR THIS PIZZA WITH HOLLY’S HILL 2020 ROUSSANNE

Thin is in! Especially when we’re talking about the praise-worthy pies at Gold Pan Pizzeria . Combining a classic NY-style recipe with the owner’s own twist, each pizza—made with dough that’s handmade, hand-tossed, and proofed on-site—is baked on stone in an old school Bakers Pride oven. DID YOU KNOW
A Better Mammogram
B
reast cancer is sneaky. And it’s scary. It’s silent and has almost no symptoms in its early stages. Experts encourage regular self-exams, but even if you do them, it can be difficult to know when you feel something abnormal. Mammograms have been around for decades and are touted as a basic diagnostic tool. But is there something better? Consider the 3D mammogram. It’s a new type of digital x-ray that creates 2D and 3D-like models of the breasts. “The image is made up of thin image slices, allowing a radiologist to flip through the images much like going through the pages of a book. The detail is incredible,” says Dan Weaver, Director of Diagnostic Imaging at Marshall Medical Center. 3D visibility is especially useful in women with dense breasts, which account for about half of all women. According to the CDC, women with dense breasts are also at higher risk for breast cancer. What’s more, dense breast tissue can mask tumors. Fibrous and glandular tissue can look similar to tumors. It can be difficult to discern. 3D mammography allows doctors to “see through” breast tissue, vastly improving visualization and more accurate readings. 3D mammograms are approved for all women who would need to undergo a regular mammogram. To schedule your 3D mammogram, call your doctor for a referral or make an appointment with Marshall Diagnostic Imaging at 530-626-2861.
Your Bowels: A Taboo Topic? Many of us are taught at an early age that it’s not polite to discuss bodily functions, particularly those coming from our bowels—the rectum and colon. But in reality, keeping quiet on the topic with your doctor could have serious consequences, including colorectal cancer. Signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer can be easy to dismiss, since bowel habits can change from day-to-day based on what we eat, our physical activity and even our mood. Be on the lookout for a change in your bowels that lasts more than a few days, including: • a feeling you need to have a bowel movement that’s not relieved by having one • rectal bleeding or blood in your stool • cramping or belly pain • weakness or fatigue • unintended weight loss If you experience any of these symptoms, make an appointment with your doctor. These early warning signs could be an indication of polyps, which can be removed before they develop into cancer.
SPECIAL AD SECTION
Cases of colorectal cancer are steadily rising among younger men and women. As such, Marshall Medical Center is following the recommendations of the United States Preventive Services Task Force to lower the recommended age to begin colorectal cancer screening from 50 to 45. The good news is that there are screening tests available that are less invasive than a colonoscopy. Ask your doctor if it’s time for you to begin your annual screenings. lifestyle or health conditions. In addition, ensuring your vaccinations are up-to-date helps keep your community safe. In one landmark instance, vaccine technology has eradicated a debilitating and deadly illness: polio. The United States has been polio free since 1979 and cases worldwide have reduced from 350,000 in 1988 to a mere 33 in 2018. Between the ages of 19 and 26, it is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that you get a Tdap vaccine to prevent tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. Tetanus and diphtheria are both infections caused by strains of bacteria that create toxins or
For adults over the age of 50, the CDC suggests getting the shingles vaccine. Almost one out of every three Americans will develop shingles during their lifetime and the risk increases as you get older. Shingles, which is caused by the same virus as chickenpox, is a viral infection that causes a painful rash, usually appearing as a single stripe of blisters that wraps around one side of the body. While the rash may disappear as you recover, some people report the pain lasting much longer, in some cases for years. There are also two pneumococcal vaccines, PPSV23 and PCV13, which prevent serious diseases including meningitis, bloodstream infections and pneumonia. Meningitis is caused by bacteria or viruses that cause swelling in the brain and spinal cord, leading to headache, fever and a stiff neck and can be fatal unless treated urgently with antibiotics. Pneumonia is an infection in the lungs that causes the air sacs to fill with fluid or pus instead of air, causing a phlegmy cough, fever, chills and difficulty

Adults at particular risk for complications from the flu are those with serious health conditions including diabetes, heart disease, history of stroke, HIV infection, diseases of the liver and lungs (including asthma), renal disease and other conditions that weaken the immune system. A new flu
vaccine is developed every year and is formulated to protect against the strains of influenza that will likely be most common that season, based on CDC research. Experts also believe that getting a COVID-19 vaccine is one of the most significant ways to control the coronavirus pandemic. Even with new variants appearing in recent months, individuals who have been vaccinated are experiencing less severe symptoms and aren’t requiring hospitalization or death at the same rate as unvaccinated individuals. If you plan to travel outside of the United States, check the CDC’s website and discuss the vaccines needed with your healthcare provider. to Ensure you’re up-todate on your routine vaccines, many of which were discussed above, as well as required vaccines for the country to which you’re traveling. In most cases, you’ll be required to get a vaccine for yellow fever, which can lead to organ failure and death in about 15% of people. FEATURE
t’s the time of year where many employers allow you to make changes to your health coverage and choose a new doctor. If you’re looking for a change, how do you choose among the sea of names and faces listed on websites and brochures?
There are many factors that go into choosing the right healthcare provider. First, consider the attributes of the hospital or health system you’d like to receive care. Are they conveniently located near work or home? Do you value one that touts a higher level of emergency or acute care? Do they specialize in your health condition? Are you looking for a facility with a birth center? Don’t hesitate to visit or schedule a tour to make sure you choose one that you’re most comfortable with. Once you’ve chosen the organization with which you’d like your primary care provider to be affiliated, the next step is to visit your healthcare insurance provider’s website for a list of medical providers who accept your type of healthcare coverage and who also have privileges at your chosen health system. When looking at the list, decide whether you would prefer to see a doctor (an MD or DO), a nurse practitioner (NP) or a physician’s assistant (PA). There are differences with each option, so read about each type of providers’ capabilities.
Next, read the biographies of each provider. There are many websites that will list the credentials of providers in your area, but the most comprehensive bios will likely be found right on their own clinic or hospital website. You can find bios for every Marshall Medical Center provider on marshallmedical.org or marshalldoctors.org. Pay attention to items that are important to you. While primarily board-certified in internal or family medicine, many practitioners have areas of interest or subspecialty. For example, if you struggle with your weight or have diabetes, there are primary care providers who can give you extra care in that area. Marshall Medical Center comes highly recommended, with awards for patient quality and safety from Leapfrog, the Lown Institute, Cal Hospital Compare and more. Our providers are board-certified or boardeligible, with high caliber primary and specialty medicine providers, conveniently located in El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Georgetown and Placerville. Marshall also boasts medical technology you might not expect to find at a community hospital, including robotic-assisted surgery, all-digital imaging, 64-slice CT, MRI and 3D mammography. Our Level 3 Trauma Center has specially-trained staff, immediate availability of surgeons, hospitalists, pharmacists and anesthesiologists 24-hours a day. The Land of Enchantment Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Taos by GARY ZSIGO
Just a few states over and a short jaunt via airplane is the state of New Mexico—the “Land of Enchantment” and the fifth largest state in the U.S. Popular for its vast amounts of mineral stone turquoise, it’s a hidden gem to many Californians. The terrain can be rugged, filled with mountains, high plains, and desert. I sought out to explore a part of the northern region covering three uniquely different cities, all full of rich heritage and culture, amazing food, and endless amounts of activities. Hotel Chimayó Lowrider Tour Thunderbird Bar & Grill
My flight from Sacramento landed upon the largest of the three cities: Albuquerque (visitalbuquerque.org) or “Burqe” as the locals call it. The terrain is a sprawling, urban vibe tucked into the backdrop of Sandia Peak on the east side (I recommend taking the tramway up to check out the views). But “Burque” would have to wait, as my adventure started by jumping into a rental car, grabbing some coffee, and heading an hour up Interstate 25 to the capital of New Mexico: Santa Fe (santafe.org). Along this route there are several offshoots worth exploring, such as Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, known for its “tent-like” rock formations, and Bandelier National Monument. After pulling into town, I checked into Hotel Chimayó (hotelchimayo.com), part of the Heritage Hotels & Resorts Inc. group of hotels. Inspired by and celebrating the history of the Village of Chimayó—located about 30 minutes
north and famous for their woven textiles and the Chimayó pepper (of which large clusters hang throughout the hotel)—the property is charming and oozing with authenticity. The Milagro Junior Presidential Suite featured warm rustic tones, custom woodwork, a fireplace, and separate mini kitchen area. What better way to cruise around town and get to know some of the history than in a lowrider? Yes, Hotel Chimayó offers guests lowrider tours that take you around the Santa Fe Plaza and other nearby notable sights such as the 19th-century-built Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi and the State Capitol. You’re guaranteed to get a lot of stares (good ones) and waves on this 30-minute tour. For a perfect ending to a perfect day, walk a half block to the plaza for margaritas on the balcony of Thunderbird Bar & Grill. Santa Fe is incredibly rich in the arts and culture scene. Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Taos and other live shows, the creative energy is off the charts. But if you really want to have your mind blown, check out Meow Wolf Santa Fe (meowwolf.com/visit/santa-fe). A little off the beaten path, you could seriously spend an entire day wandering through this interactive, immersive art installation. With mind-bending multimedia elements and a mysterious narrative throughout, everyone has their own unique experience at this destination that doubles as a music venue and also boasts a full bar. All that art makes one hungry. If you’re in the mood for some New Mexican fare, the most notable dish is anything chili verde. I warmed my belly up with some green chile pork posole on the rooftop of Coyote Cantina (coyotecafe.com/ cantina), followed by a nightcap at The Pink Adobe’s Dragon Room Lounge (thepinkadobe.com). If you have room, and the energy, Hotel Chimayo’s Low ‘n Slow Lowrider Bar Featuring HAWT Pizza isn’t only hip but known for their cocktails and, of course, pizza.

DAY 2 The short walk to Café Pasqual’s (pasquals.com) is worth the wait for breakfast. Luckily, I barely made it for the first wave of seating. Stuffed from a breakfast burrito, it was off for the hour drive to Ghost Ranch (ghostranch.org) for a horseback tour of the inspirational landscape of many of Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings. Wrangler and tour guide Daniel Ghost Ranch

didn’t “horse” around on catching our group of six up to speed on horseback riding basics. Bishop (my horse) and I quickly bonded, and he made it a smooth 90-minute ride. The landscape was spectacular, and we even saddle-backed by Georgia O’Keeffe’s home. Once back at the Ghost Ranch Visitor’s Center, you can enjoy lunch at the onsite café—or stop for food at Bode’s General Store (bodes.com), known for their delicious sandwiches and local beer on tap. After, I drove to Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort (ojosparesorts.com) to relax and soak away in the pure geothermal mineral waters. There are several public baths to choose from, or you can take advantage of a private spa for an hour. Totally relaxed and rejuvenated, you’ll rest easy at one of the resort’s myriad lodging options, including a cozy retrofitted Airstream trailer that features a comfy bed and all the amenities of a standard hotel room. They also have a sister resort, Ojo Sante Fe.

After one last morning soak, it was off to Taos (taos.org), a small artist-centric city amongst the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Along the way, I checked out the 10th highest bridge in the U.S.: the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, which spans nearly 600 feet over the Rio Grande River. The quaint historic downtown of Taos delivers many cute shops, galleries, and restaurants—including Tony Whitecrow’s (full of vintage western wear and handcrafted jewelery), Manzanita Market (a popular café for lunch), Chokolá (a small-batch, organically crafted bean-to-bar chocolate maker), and artist galleries in the Bent Street

District—along with a plaza in which a farmers’ market is held Saturdays from May-October. For a late lunch, a local artist recommended Lambert’s of Taos Restaurant & Bar (lambertsoftaos.com), and I’m so glad they did. Sitting in the treehouse bar filled with artisan furniture and a low-key vibe, I noshed some of my favorite bites the whole trip: fried chicken deviled eggs and crispy Brussels sprouts with bacon. Next order of business was checking into the hotel: El Monte Sagrado Taos (elmontesagrado.com). Set on landscaped grounds with fountains and waterfall features, this tranquil, adobe-style resort is a short walk back into town and includes the award-winning De La Tierra Restaurant and Anaconda Bar where locals come for the lively atmosphere, signature drinks, and creative cuisine. My room, one of the luxuriously spacious Native American Suites, featured a Kiva-style fireplace, handcrafted stone tile work, and a private patio overseeing the pond. The hotel’s complimentary car service takes you into town, which I took full advantage of to enjoy drinks at the vibrant Historic Taos Inn’s Adobe Bar (taosinn.com/restaurant/ adobebar), a historic landmark due to its traditional adobelike structure. Dinner was at The Love Apple (theloveapple. net)—a romantic, dimly lit space (formerly a chapel) emphasizing local, organic New Mexican home cooking with an elevated twist. The waitstaff was friendly, and the food was made with lots of love!

Trujillo’s Weaving Shop El Farol
In the morning, from the hotel concierge, I purchased a pass to tour Taos Pueblo (taospueblo.com), a UNESCO Heritage Site located just a few miles north of town. One of the Eight Northern Pueblos, the Taos Pueblo is famous for its multistoried residential complex of reddish-brown adobe, in which around 150 people still live. The knowledgeable tour guide and pueblo resident walked me through the village where there are shops and cafés (I grabbed a piece of delicious fry bread from one of the native woman and purchased some turquoise from a vendor) as I admired the architecture and all its history. After the tour, it was back to the road (the High Road to Taos, but I was going back to Santa Fe). It was a beautiful drive, with an array of fall colors painting the mountainsides. Along the way, Sugar Nymphs Bistro (sugarnymphs.com) is a recommended stop to fill up. I opted to stop in the historic town of Chimayó for lunch and a Chimayó Cocktail (prickly pear margarita) at Rancho de Chimayó (ranchodechimayo.com). This area also know for woven textiles, and Trujillo’s Weaving Shop has some of the most exquisite. Just down the road was Santuario de Chimayó—a Colonial-style 1816 adobe church and popular Catholic pilgrimage site known for its “healing dirt.” I made it to Santa Fe just in time to see the spectacular sunset from the rooftop of LaFonda Hotel (lafondasantafe. com) before enjoying dinner at El Farol (elfarolsantafe.com), known for their tapas and live Flamenco shows. Lodging that night was at an Airbnb located near the trendy Santa Fe Railyard Arts District (railyardsantafe.com).

Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Taos Tune-Up Café
DAY 5 All aboard, I headed to the Railyard Arts District’s farmers’ market—held year-round on Saturdays and chock-full of local artisans, fresh produce, and food venders. Just a short walk down the street I indulged in a breakfast burrito at Tune-Up Café (tuneupsantafe.com) and pint at Second Street Brewery (secondstreetbrewery.com). Heading back to Albuquerque, it was time for the massive, world-renowned Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta (balloonfiesta.com). For nine days in October, this event creates an enchanted world of special-shaped balloon rodeos, twilight balloon glows, and vibrant balloon-filled skies. Brisk autumn mornings in the Rio Grande Valley create an otherworldly backdrop for the breathtaking majesty of the most popular event: Mass Ascension of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Before checking into the event, I checked into the retrofitted El Vado Motel (elvadoabq.com). With its unique blend of historic character and charm, combined with

modern comforts and amenities, the El Vado plaza boasts a taproom, a changing lineup of seven different dining options, and local artisan shops. It’s also home to live entertainment throughout the year. After getting settled in, I headed to the balloon fiesta to watch the night ascension. It didn’t fall short one bit of spectacular. Once all the balloons fired up, they hovered above the grounds and lit up the night sky like fireflies. A truly magical experience.

I woke before sunrise to catch the morning Mass Ascension. This time the balloons—once up in the air would—glide throughout the whole Albuquerque area. Throughout the entire nine days, over 500 balloons and 850,000 patrons from all over the world participate in this event. The trip couldn’t end without brunch at Campo located within Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm (lospoblanos.com). The Bloody Mary and chilaquiles tasted so fresh, using all locally sourced ingredients. With outstanding service and atmosphere, calling ahead for reservations is a must. Before heading to the airport, I grabbed a quick bite at El Pinto Restaurant & Cantina (elpinto.com), known for having some of the city’s best New Mexican food. Leaving for the airport, I couldn’t help but think about everything I’d seen but all that was left to discover in this region of New Mexico. From its rich history, inspirational landscape, and authentic cuisine, there’s something for everyone in the Land of Enchantment.

here are parts of this job— beyond eating at some wonderful restaurants and getting paid to write about them—that I truly enjoy. Every independent small business has a story to tell, and I enjoy those stories as much as the food. Alex Pareja is a very young man in a very competitive business, and he’s swinging for the fences. His first restaurant, Mikasa Asian Fusion, is a family affair—skilled, veteran sushi chef Bernabe is Alex’s father, and his mom, Maria, makes the Chinese fare. Now you may have noticed that Pareja is not an Asian last name, which shows

the family’s depth in the industry. With a menu of Japanese and Chinese offerings and a subtle nod to their heritage (Mikasa=mi casa, perhaps?), young Alex is off to a hot start. I kicked my meal off with one of the fusion starters: ceviche presented on wonton chips. The well-executed appetizer was a compilation of flavors you’d expect to find on a beach resort in Cabo—fresh lime, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, jalapeños, and red snapper. I loved the citrus, mild seafood flavor, and crunch of the wonton chips (I also fry them up when I make ceviche at home—give it a try!). Next up was a more traditional Chinese/American favorite: Mongolian

Lobster Roll

beef. I’m not always someone who orders this dish at a Chinese restaurant, as it’s usually too sweet. This version, however, had just enough sweetness to complement the rich beef. I also appreciated the crunch of the onions and bell peppers—a welcome change from the sugar-bombgolian beef I often encounter. Enough of the fusion side, I needed some sushi! I couldn’t help but notice a plate of rolls with a lobster shell making its way from the sushi bar out to a customer. A lobster roll looked and sounded
like just what I needed. Beautifully presentated, the sushi wasn’t covered in too much sauce, allowing the delicate crustacean flavor to shine. There’s nothing worse to me than ordering an expensive piece of seafood and burying it in a thick, overpowering sauce. Nice job, chef (and thank you for the salmon and ahi snacks)! Good luck to Alex and the Pareja family on this and future endeavors (yes, there may be more to come according to the young entrepreneur). I have no doubt you’ll be successful!

Looking for quick-service tacos/Mexican food but tired of la campana (The Bell)? Don’t want to get out of the car? How about comfortable indoor dining that’s fast but not fast food? An open patio perhaps? Look no further than Rocklin’s new taco spot: Taco Exxpress. Drive-thru, dine outside, or sit inside, and get your Mex fix fast. It’s been years since I’ve had “crunchy tacos,” and I don’t know why—health reasons, I guess? I grew up with my mom frying shells for her six boys and husband—plus a neighborhood kid or two—filling them with ground hamburger, tomatoes, onions and mounded with cheddar cheese. Definitely not authentic but delicious! So, I had to order one chicken and one beef “crunchy-style.” The memories came roaring back: super crispy and full of sabor…grab some extra napkins! I also tried an al pastor burrito; maybe a bit heavy on the rice but overall good flavor. Next time I’ll try the carne asada fries, or one of the other menu items, which run the gamut from breakfast burritos and tortas to nachos, quesadillas, and more. Speedy service, fresh ingredients, and friendly employees, plus complimentary chips and salsa (if you choose to dine in or take out)? I’ll be back!

Wise Villa Winery
4200 Wise Road, Lincoln, 916-543-0323, wisevillawinery.com WHY IS SUSTAINABILITY IMPORTANT TO YOUR WINERY? Wise Villa is a threegeneration family business, so we’re keenly aware of the importance of having a healthy ecosystem at the vineyard and the land surrounding it. We want to pass on a healthy, functioning agricultural enterprise to many more generations. HOW IS YOUR WINERY SUSTAINABLE? The most impactful sustainable method is a bio-friendly wastewater treatment system: biofiltro. It’s utilized for the winery’s wastewater and is a blend of modern science and Mother Nature; the wastewater is gravity-fed into a two-story recycled cargo container and undergoes a process of percolating through wood shavings and sand as well as passing through a chamber of millions of earthworms, which consume remaining suspended solids. The naturally cleaned water is then reused for irrigation. Wise Villa is one of only seven wineries in California to employ this practice and also uses natural bio-fertilizers, mows weeds instead of spraying herbicides, utilizes owl

boxes instead of pesticides, and preserves the soil’s natural microbes by eliminating the practice of tilling it between crop rows. WHAT IS YOUR WINERY KNOWN FOR? Wines with lower alcohol levels and fruit-forward characteristics that pair well with food. TELL US A FUN FACT ABOUT THE WINERY. There’s also a restaurant at the vineyard! For weekend trips, be sure to arrive before noon for a table on the lawn or on a private landing. The restaurant also offers a to-go menu for enjoying at the vineyard or lawn picnics. WHY IS SUSTAINABILITY IMPORTANT TO YOUR WINERY? Tabeaux Cellars believes that if a farm can’t support itself, then it isn’t built to last. We aim not only to support the land but leave it better than we found it. HOW IS YOUR WINERY SUSTAINABLE? The farm and winery are both fully solar powered and highly conscientious about water usage and conservation. The winery was built using reclaimed construction items and milled lumber from fallen trees on the property. WHAT IS YOUR WINERY KNOWN FOR? The wine, regardless of the grapes used, is always fermented on its native yeasts. We also practice minimal intervention—no additions or adjustments, just sulfur for stabilization. One year, a wine club member on the East Coast sent us a freshly dumped Kentucky bourbon barrel and asked if we could do something with it. For fun, we aged a portion of the 2017 Primitivo in it. Now it’s a customer favorite: Californy Reserve. TELL US A FUN FACT ABOUT THE WINERY. The winery was named after a lake near its 40-acre organic permaculture farm.
