s it 5 o’clock yet? And is anyone going to judge me if I pour myself a drink before then? (Asking for a friend.) But seriously, times are tough, and alcohol—in moderation—is my antidote. Don’t worry, I sip responsibly and have other, healthier hobbies too, but something about a glass of refreshing rosé after a long day of working from home and parenting my all-consuming kid really takes the edge off. Apparently I’m not alone either. According to market research firm Nielsen, alcohol sales were up 55% from the second week of March to the third—and have remained high in the weeks since. If you’re part of the percentage who’s been partaking in happy hour at home, hopefully you’ve been supporting mom-and-pop places by grabbing growlers from local breweries, purchasing curbside cocktails, or buying bottles from one of our area’s 200-plus wineries. Speaking of the latter, in this month’s feature, “A Local Wine Lover’s Guide” (page 57), we take you to a small sampling of our favorites, including ones that boast bocce ball courts (like our cover winery, Andis), plus share drinkable bottles for $25 or less, buzzworthy wine bars, and restaurants with winning wine lists. We also share current trends in the world of wine (spoiler alert: cans are cool…and readily available at places like Wise Villa Winery, Element 79 Vineyards, and E16 Winery!). It’s an ode to oenophiles that will hopefully make you more appreciative of our region’s robust wine region. With drinking comes eating, and—as per usual—we have plenty of content dedicated to dining. From a piece on Palladio at Broadstone’s Iron Horse Tavern (page 72), where writer Lorn Randall highly recommends the beignets (“pyramids of powdered sugar-covered orbs”); to another about Placer County’s first true Fillipino eatery, Kultura Café (page 76), there are a plethora of diverse dishes waiting to be discovered. For people with excess summer produce, turn to page 78 for recipes to make a garden-fresh feast that’s nutritious, delicious, and meat (but not flavor) free. Athome chefs will also be intrigued by this issue’s Editor’s Picks (page 44), where we highlight 14 foodie finds sure to make your kitchen the tastiest one around town. Finally, in Health & Wellness (page 28), we asked area experts—from licensed therapists to a pediatrician—for their top tips when talking to kids about race. As a mom to —Benjamin Franklin a biracial baby who’s already experienced some people’s unfortunate ignorance, this piece touches extra close to home. I hope we all take some of the suggestions to heart and do our part, as parents, in addressing this not-always easy but essential topic—ensuring the next generation values various cultures and sees individuals as opposed to stereotypes. There’s many more uplifting and informative articles in the pages that follow, so pour yourself a beverage and toast to this tumultuous yet historic time with Style by your side. Beloved local chain Dos Coyotes opened a new concept restaurant at 185 Placerville Road in Folsom. They plan to build a Family Resource Center adjacent to Theodore Judah Elementary School meant for tutoring and mentoring children, and counselling and educating parents.

Who they are: This club began serving 40 children a day and has since grown to more than 500 children (ages 5-18), over 65% of whom are financially disadvantaged. Serving El Dorado County youth for over 20 years, they have sites in Placerville, El Dorado Hills, Georgetown, and Pollock Pines. Their mission is to enable youth to reach their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.

What they do: They offer critical services to young people in areas like education, character development, career exploration, sports and recreation, the arts, and community service. They are committed to their Youth Development Strategy of instilling in their members a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging, and the power of influence. A new Clubhouse in Roseville will begin serving youth in 2021. They hope to have their Golf Tournament fundraiser at Winchester Country Club on August 18.

What they do: Every child experience focuses on academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles. In the last year, the club has served over 140,000 scratch-made

Who they are: After working in education and at nonprofits, Donja Marie Garvey wanted to make more of an impact and started MMV in 2007. Their mission is to end generational and situational poverty through early education and support to children in need. They focus on literacy through third grade—the most important benchmark to reading literacy. What they do: They concentrate on schools where the poverty rate is high and most of the students don’t speak English as their first language. Their “A Book of My Own” program gives every child a brand-new book every month along with backpacks filled with supplies for home and school. They’ve also assisted during the pandemic—providing rent support, medical, and social service referrals, and over 8,300 meals to families. How you can help: Volunteers are needed to assist in classrooms, shop for groceries, organize clothing, etc. You can also sign up to be a Friend of MMV Families—a special group that’s contacted for immediate needs and special requests.

HLN: WHAT’S YOUR EARLIEST ART MEMORY? SJ: I remember painting on easels in kindergarten. Drawing and painting continued to be my first love throughout middle and high school, and then I received my BA in fine art in 1978. After, I evolved to doing a combination of painting on photos and collage. HLN: HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR CURRENT TECHNIQUE? SJ: Formal training in college was like other majors—you take [courses in] a little bit of everything. Instead of approaching a blank sheet of paper or canvas and having at it, I was most fulfilled by the methodology of printmaking (silkscreen, lithography, etching) in which you create images layer by layer. HLN: YOU LIKE TO EVOKE A SENSE OF "MYSTERIOUS NARRATIVE" IN YOUR WORK. CAN YOU ELABORATE? SJ: I’m influenced by the art movements of the surrealists and Pre-Raphaelites. Each of them, as well as other favorite artists, leave the viewer with some mystery or a sense of a story, even if the story isn’t entirely clear. A little mystery goes a long way. HLN: HOW DO YOU OVERCOME ARTIST’S BLOCK? SJ: I get into the studio and keep making stuff. Not everything will be wonderful, yet odds are some might. I just reviewed 75 new pieces with my dealers; we deemed 24 pieces acceptable, 15 maybe with some rework, and 36 not acceptable, which got destroyed.

HLN: ARE THERE ANY OTHER CHALLENGES YOU’VE HAD TO OVERCOME? SJ: For years, my work has primarily been a mash-up of oil paint and pencil on photographs of female nudes, landscapes, and found images. I think public sentiment such as #MeToo and #WeSaidEnough will lessen the amount of nudes in a lot of art, including mine. HLN: LOOKING BACK, WOULD YOU HAVE DONE ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY IN YOUR CAREER? SJ: I’m not sure I would have. Early on, it became apparent that I wouldn’t be able to support myself, much less a family, as an artist, so I bumped into a different field to earn a living. I have friends who sacrificed everything to be a working artist but that didn’t appeal to me. I still love making art, but it’s relegated to the sideline. y name is Jennifer Tommasini, the owner/director of The Gift of Kids Daycare and Preschool. I’ve lived in El Dorado Hills for 18 years and I have kids ages 20, 23, 9 and 10 years of age.

My journey into the childcare field began in 1999 when I was left disappointed in my search for ”the right” childcare for my son. After going through many programs and with my daughter on the way (now attending Chico State), I began to reflect upon my family’s needs. It was then that I changed my career focus and ventured into childcare. My mission is to provide a nurturing, loving, safe and educational environment for every child. On June 10, 2000, I opened my home to three newborns, two 2-year-

olds and a 3-year-old. I immediately knew that this was my calling. Everything felt so natural. I went back to school full time for early childhood education and started my own preschool program that incorporated home-cooked meals, planned outings, and practiced an advanced curriculum with structured activities that fostered learning.

In 2007 I opened a small pre-school with 60 families while continuing my in-home daycare. In 2010 I expanded again, bringing my preschool and in home-daycare under one roof - The Gift of Kids Daycare and Preschool. It has been a dream to serve so many children and give families the satisfaction I never felt when my son was in daycare. I pride myself on offering a safe place for families to bring their children. The Gift of Kids currently has 32 wonderful, loving, professional teachers and over 200 children. We provide care for infants, preschoolers, private kindergarten, and school agers. Although the size seems large, the classrooms have a homey feel where the teachers truly care about each child’s development. We work together on communicating with parents and developing each child’s individual needs. It delights me that so many children have the opportunity to experience our program.

Eighteen years ago, I never thought the twitching of my thumb or the stiffness of my arm would lead to a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. As the lack of my motor control became more obvious, I knew it was time to become educated and look into resources that would help slow the progress of this disease. I learned from my Doctor that Roseville Health and Wellness Center offered an exercise program that was designed specifically for those with Parkinson’s Disease (Parkinson-Wise Exercise Program). This program was exactly what I needed! Men and Women in my age range (60’s-80’s) who are battling Parkinson’s, workout together for an hour, up to three times per week. We work on balance, strength and endurance. The exercises are beneficial and the social aspect with others makes working out that much more enjoyable. For me, the comradely is as important as the exercise! Parkinson’s progression and symptoms vary from person to person. With direction from the Parkinson-Wise Exercise Program, I work diligently to improve my ability to move easier. She recently said she is so thankful her Parkinson’s exercise program is considered essential because most days she forgets she has Parkinson’s disease, without exercise she would most likely be immobile. From rosé all day to screw caps, it seems there’s always a wine fad waiting to be discovered. Here are some of the latest buzzwords. This ancient winemaking style is becoming more widely available (including Element 79’s 2016 Amber) and gives new-or old-world wine drinkers something to talk about. The beautiful, vibrant aromatics mixed with the luscious tannin provided from skincontact fermentation results in wine that appeals to every palate. Balance. Young winemakers are stepping back from the big, bold, and extracted wines of their parents and working to find balance of acid, fruit, and oak by letting varietal and regional flavors take the spotlight, which allows the unique terroir of California's diversity to shine.

Wines that are crafted using sustainable practices, such as Fish Friendly Farming (a certification program for agricultural properties managed to restore fish and wildlife habitat and improve water quality), continue to trend. Planting cover crops like legumes and rye grass, which add nitrogen and nutrients back into the earth; using drip lines to irrigate; and incorporating fencing in a way that keeps corridors open for wildlife are other ways wineries practice sustainability. Sparkling wines. More wineries in the El Dorado AVA are starting to offer at least one sparkling wine, and the styles they’re being done in are spread across the board.

Rosé. With hot weather upon us, dry styles of rosé are still more popular than off-dry styles, but rosé as a whole continues to trend.

Not just for special occasions anymore, locally produced sparkling wines have become more popular as everyday wines, especially for hot summer days. A just-right, brut-style bubbly (not too sweet and not too dry) makes every drink a celebration. If you really want to be "on trend" and treat yourself, pop the cork on a light and refreshing sparkling rosé. Nontraditional white wine varietals. Look beyond Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc for white wines that do great in our local climate, like Torrontés, Albariño, Vermentino, and Viongier. Light, crisp, and fruity, they’re perfect for backyard picnics and lounging by the pool. Chilled reds. Traditionalists—please cover your ears and avert your eyes: Red wines can be chilled! Contrary to popular myth, there are plenty of red wines that you can drink slightly chilled in the summer months—a Beaujolais, Gamay, or a light and fruity Grenache can all be experienced in a whole new way with a light chill from your fridge. Local wine tasting. Local wineries have reopened and are offering not only wine tasting but flights and wines by the glass, too—seated alfresco in their airy spaces often overlooking the vineyards. uch like the Carly Simon lyrics made (in)famous by a ketchup commercial, “Anticipation is making me wait, is keeping me waiting…” In this case, the anticipation of waiting for the restrictions to ease, so I could try the new Iron Horse Tavern. Fortunately, the sun came out, the rain subsided, and—best of all—restaurants began to open. I took this opportunity to venture to the Palladio and try the Folsom edition of Iron Horse Tavern: the sister restaurant to its popular Sacramento namesake. The gastropub has a steakhouse feel to it with dark button-tuck, leather-upholstered booths and burnished red paint trimmed in black reclaimed wood. But thankfully, Iron Horse is not another stuffy steakhouse, as evidenced by my appetizer: tuna poke nachos. Their most popular app is a highly engineered structure of wonton chips, Sriracha mayo, spicy soy, wasabi cream, sweet onions, nori, tomatoes, avocado, and chopped ahi tuna. It was so good I considered ending the review right there and going home completely satisfied. Next from the kitchen came the garlic shrimp pizza—a hand-crafted pie that unfortunately lacked seasoning and possibly a squeeze of lemon for some acid balance against the richness of the fontina cheese and parmesan cheese sauce. This was possibly due to the new COVID-19 rules, i.e., no condiments at the table, so I won’t judge too harshly, (I would order it again with those options available). So, do you order a steak at a place that looks like a steakhouse, but isn’t? Yes, although with one caveat: You have to like heat! The Hawaiian style ribeye—a flame-seared half-inch thick slab of steak in a soy/garlic-based sauce with enough red chili flakes to make your upper lip sweat— was bursting with flavor and spice. The entrée also came with green beans, red bell peppers, and roasted fingerling potatoes, and the sauce had just enough sweetness to leave me craving another bite. If you’re considering dessert, no doubt you’ll witness the pyramids of powdered sugarcovered orbs ferried from the kitchen to the dining room. The beignets here have attained a cultlike following; likely the first words mentioned after saying, “I ate at Iron Horse Tavern!” are “Did you have the beignets? OMG!” True story. My theory is they’re made from pâte à choux dough, which explains their size and airiness. Whatever they’re made from, they’re delicious—and served with a trio of sauces: vanilla bean crème anglaise, berry compote, and chocolate ganache. Iron Horse Tavern would be a fun date night option, happy hour spot, or casual place to drop-in for a beverage and a bite. HOURS: 10 a.m.-8:30 p.m. (Sunday);

Kultura Café // With the surplus of dining establishments dotting the local landscape, one cuisine has been curiously underrepresented: Filipino food. Enter owners RJ and Karla and their first foray into the restaurant scene: Kultura Café. Kudos to the hardworking pair, as their soft opening was two weeks before the shelter-in-place order was mandated. They have, like many other businesses, managed to adapt through a faithful following and curbside takeout. I stopped in for my first real experience with Filipino foods that weren’t named lumpia or chicken adobo (both of which I’m a big fan of!). Karla recommended I try the Lechón Plate with pork belly. (Thank you Karla—it was excellent.) Crispy cuts of pork belly with very little fat, most of it rendered off in the cooking process, allowed the natural pork flavor to shine. Served with a heaping helping of white rice and Mang Tomas dipping sauce, it was more than plenty. I also treated myself to a Lychee Iced Tea with boba and lychee jelly pearls. Summer Farm Salad

Submitted by The Argonaut Farm to Fork Café, 331 State Hwy 49, Coloma, 530-626-7345, argonautcafe.com • 1 head seasonal organic lettuce, finely chopped • 1 peach or stone fruit of choice, thinly sliced • Handful of candied almonds • Handful of sunflower sprouts and pea shoots

Cashew Cream Sauce: • 2 cups cashew nuts • 1 1/4 cup warm water • 1–2 garlic cloves • 1 tsp. sea salt

• Fresh herbs & edible flowers of your choice • 1 grilled chicken breast (optional) • ½ avocado, sliced • Salt and pepper, to taste Make cashew cream sauce. Blend all ingredients in a blender until thick. Chill before serving. Layer lettuce on plate or a large wooden bowl; add sliced fruit and candied almonds; delicately place sprouts, pea shoots, fresh herbs, and edible flowers. Place grilled chicken and sliced avocado on the side and drizzle cashew cream sauce on top.

Watermelon & Cucumber Salad

• Vegetable oil for frying

• 3/4 cup sugar

• 6 medium, firm (unripe) tomatoes, sliced ¼ inch thick

• 3/4 cup water

• 1 red onion, thinly sliced into • 1 tsp. Dijon mustard rounds • 4 oz. baby arugula • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1 tsp. Old Bay seasoning • Pinch cayenne • 2 eggs, lightly beaten • 1/4 cup buttermilk • 2 cups fine yellow cornmeal

• 6 slices cooked bacon (reserve bacon fat for the vinaigrette) • 1 basket mixed cherry tomatoes, halved • Salt and pepper, to taste

Heat vinegar, sugar, and water in a small saucepot. Bring to a simmer and remove from heat. Add the sliced red onion and set aside to pickle for about 10 minutes. Drain the onion and set aside, reserve the pickling liquid for the vinaigrette. Pickled onions can be made up to three days ahead. Set up three rimmed plates or wide bowls for breading the tomatoes. In the first plate, mix the flour with the Old Bay seasoning, cayenne, and a generous pinch of salt and pepper. In the second bowl, mix the eggs and buttermilk. In the third bowl, mix the cornmeal with a generous pinch of salt and pepper. Heat a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan about 1/8

inch. Toss the tomatoes first in the flour mixture, then coat in the egg mixture, then in the cornmeal. As you bread the tomatoes, place them in the heated oil and fry to a golden-brown color, flipping over to brown evenly. Drain on paper towels. Make the vinaigrette with 2 tbsp. pickling liquid, Dijon mustard, and ¼ cup bacon grease. Season with salt and pepper. To serve, line a large platter with the baby arugula, saving a few leaves as garnish. Drizzle some of the vinaigrette over arugula, then top with fried tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, pickled onion and cooked bacon. Garnish with more arugula, then drizzle remaining vinaigrette over the top. Serve immediately.
