Seventy years by Summer (age 8)

Seventy years as our Queen

She was the longest serving Monarch ever seen

Seventy years of wearing the crown Always with smiles, never a frown

Now she's in Heaven. Prince Philip by her side He’s been waiting for her with arms open wide

We will miss you Ma'am, but don’t you fear We will welcome your son King Charles with cheers

You did your duty to God and the crown Our flags won’t fly high, instead they are down

We know it was time for you to go But you'll be missed much more than you know God, please look after our Queen She's been the best Queen the world has seen.

Remember, remember, The 8th of September, The day the Queen passed away. She had always been, A long-ruling queen, Until the tragic day. Before she died aged 96, She saw problems being caused and fixed. 15 PM's came and went, 307,000 letters she sent.

Britain's sadder than it's ever been, So please God, look after our Queen.

"I want people to know that living in Rochdale played a massive part in making me the person I am today."
style exclusive KEIRA WALSH

Just six weeks after England's unforgettable victory, Rochdale's own Lioness Keira Walsh is now the world's most expensive women's footballer, following a record-breaking transfer from Manchester City to FC Barcelona.

Born and raised in Rochdale, Keira attended Healey Primary School, Haslingden High School and Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School Sixth Form. She began playing football with Pearson Juniors and Samba Stars, before progressing to Blackburn Rovers and signing professionally with her childhood idols Manchester City, in 2014.

It was the pass from Keira that set up England’s first goal scored by Ella Toone in the Euro 2022 Wembley final, and as the match ended in an historic victory for England, Keira was named Player of the Match.

Style caught up with Keira to reflect on an incredible summer and where it all began...

Style: What age did you begin playing and where did you first start out?

Keira: I began playing at around age 5 or 6 with my dad on the field across from our house in Syke and then I joined a Rochdale team called Pearson Juniors... At Healey Primary School I would play at break time and lunchtime with my friends.

You seem so down to earth and still very much a Rochdale girl. How have you kept your feet on the ground and handled the added media attention that the last few months has brought?

I think my family definitely help to keep my feet on the ground. I just love playing football so for me I don’t really pay much attention to stuff that happens off the field now, I just try and enjoy myself. My dad also tells me to keep improving as well and working hard every day.

What were your favourite moments of Euro 2022?

There were so many unbelievable memories on the pitch that I couldn’t even begin to choose one or two. Away from the pitch my favourite moments were the family BBQs and playing volleyball with the team; it gave us a chance to switch off and just enjoy the journey with people around us.

What do you think has changed over the past couple of years to lead to the England team's incredible success?

We definitely had the most support we’ve ever had in terms of making sure logistically we were the best. Travel, hotels and access to the best facilities to all help with recovery, that helped us to perform and win.

What was it like being based at St George’s Park with your teammates?

We stayed there in the prep camps. It was easy because we all know the facilities and we could just focus on training. The prep camps were good because the staff had organised darts boards and pool tables to keep us entertained off the pitch.

The celebrations after the final lasted long into the night, before the celebrations in Trafalgar Square! Six weeks later, what’s the atmosphere like within the team?

The celebrations were crazy… everybody had worked so hard for us to achieve this goal and it was only right to make sure we enjoyed the achievement.

The atmosphere in the team is great - it’s always hard coming off the back of such a positive and not really having time to digest before club football starts again, but we put in two good performances over the qualifiers and everybody in the squad contributed.

How do you think the team’s success will influence women's and girls' football around the country?

We are hoping that everybody feels comfortable to pick up a football and play. It doesn’t matter if you want to be a professional or if it’s just about having fun. We believe that everybody deserves the right to at least have access to the sport.

What are your hopes for the 2023 World Cup in New Zealand and Australia?

I think it’s hard to talk about hopes for the World Cup when we’ve only just qualified but I’m sure our messages will remain the same that we want to play exciting football and make the nation even prouder!!

What else do you want to achieve both on and off the pitch?

I think for me I want to grow as a person, not just a player. I want to continue putting myself out of my comfort zone and using my platform to support and bring light to issues that I feel strongly about.

On the pitch, I want to continue to win trophies!

What advice would you give to young people, particularly from your hometown, who are inspired by your achievements?

I want to tell young people that they can achieve their dreams. People from Rochdale can be whoever they are inspired to be.

I’ve had nothing but support from the people of our town and I want people to know that living in Rochdale played a massive part in making me the person I am today.

TOUCHSTONES

• Rochdale, OL16 1AQ

• Currently the nearest car park is probably the multi-storey at Rochdale Riverside (OL16 1TR) or the Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre. Or you could arrive by tram or bus.

• The museum is open Wednesday-Sunday… and it is FREE (with donations being very welcome)!

• Slice Café is on-site serving a delicious choice of cakes, hot food and drinks

• Baby changing facilities & an accessible toilet

If you want your kids to learn about the history of our wonderful town (or even if you just want to expand your own knowledge) then Touchstones is just the place!

Touchstones is a FREE museum that tells the story of Rochdale and its people through family-friendly displays and interactive exhibits.

Obviously my kids - not wowed by the Industrial Revolution or as enamoured by Gracie Fields as me - particularly enjoyed the smelly barrels where you have to sniff and then guess what is inside! They also liked looking at the antique toys and oldfashioned sweets, and loved drawing on the chalk board.

When we visited there were also arts and crafts to do… and their creativity went wild - colouring, cutting and sticking! Alongside this there is lots of fantastic art (by more established artists) to admire.

Touchstones is such an interesting place to visit at any time, but also keep your eyes open for new and exciting exhibitions, workshops, talks and special events.

WOODLAND, WELLIES & CRUNCHY AUTUMN LEAVES...

We have some beautiful woodland nearby; perfect for crunching autumn leaves and exploring with all the family.

HOPWOOD WOODS

• In between Castleton, Heywood and Middleton

• We park in the lay-by near Hopwood Hall College (M24 6XH), but there are other access points

These woods are so much bigger than you would expect from the road and we have previously spent nearly 2 hours exploring here. You might hit dead ends but you can just keep turning back and choosing different paths - up, down, through streams, over bridges, jumping onto tree stumps and balancing along logs… fun to be had by all! There are also a number of lovely carvings dotted around Hopwood Woods… including an owl, a rabbit, a woodpecker and… A GRUFFALO!

SYKE WOODS

• Rochdale

• You can park on Syke Road (near The Donkey, OL12 9TB) or on Buckley Road (OL12 9DT)

This is not a massive place but a lovely leafy spot, with little paths to explore, mini hills to conquer and ponds to find!

BARKERS WOOD

• Littleborough

• You could park on Starring Way or Starring Lane (OL15 8LP), but be mindful of residents

This is only a small wood but it is surrounded by countryside so you could easily extend your trip out with a lovely walk. Inside the wood, however, there are so many den building opportunities to keep you busy! There are also trees you can climb, stumps you can jump on and a bug hotel you can peep in… and make sure you keep your eyes peeled for colourful painted “Littleborough Rocks”!

ALKRINGTON WOODS

• Middleton

• There is a car park just off Manchester Old Road (M24 4EB) or street parking around the Hall Drive area (M24 1WD)

This is such a fantastic area for little explorers. You could easily spend a couple of hours wandering and that’s before you’ve thrown stones in the brook, played pooh sticks in the stream and spotted all the different birds on the lake.

Don’t forget to find the imposing Alkrington Hall, which overlooks the wood. It has a big hill in front of it which is perfect for running (or rolling) down. Dotted throughout the woods there are also some boardwalks to follow, bridges to ford and dens to find… and - if you’re lucky- you might stumble across a tree swing!

Prioritise your health with expert care from J2 Medical

So many of us automatically take control when it comes to the maintenance of our homes, our cars, our pets and even our hair but few of us pro actively take control of the very thing that keeps us functioning - our body! We wait, we ignore the signs and then we become sick and only at that point do we have to react.

Being pro active with your health means learning to listen to your body, picking up subtle signs like fatigue, headaches, stomach problems or simply just feeling that something isn’t quite right, and then taking control.

At J2 Medical - a private medical centre in the heart of Rochdale Town Centre - the expert team have put together a number of popular ‘off the shelf’ screening packages if you know what’s worrying you. If you don’t, or your health issue is more vague or complex, then their experienced doctors will be on hand with prompt appointments to discuss, test, consult, diagnose and administer any necessary treatments.

The team are dedicated to improving your health and helping you become the best version of you.

J2 Medical's Lead Clinician Dr Jayanth Savanth - popularly known as ‘Dr Jay’ - is an Emergency Medicine Specialist with more than 20 years’ experience working in the UK and Ireland. In addition to Emergency Medicine, he has worked in Gastroenterology and Neurology, as well as many other specialty departments.

A keen sportsperson and race driver himself, he has a special interest in field and high speed motor sports; working as a race rescue trauma doctor both on circuit and within the medical centre at the iconic Silverstone Race Circuit. He covers the world famous Formula 1 races, MOTO GP, Welsh GB Rally as well as other National and International races.

Dr Jayanth Savanth commented:

"You may just be curious to see what your state of health is, or want to know if you’re at risk from certain health issues or it may be that you have a family history of diabetes, stroke, cancer, heart disease or something else and just want to put your mind at ease or uncover any potential issues, whatever it is we’re here to help.

"In an ideal world people should have immediate access to medical diagnostics as and when they require it; unfortunately it’s not an ideal world.

"In my career I have seen many very sick people who would have benefited from pro active medical screening. I passionately believe that people should have the right to choose what tests they have and when they have them, not only at the point they desperately need them but whenever ‘they’ feel the need; nobody knows your body like you do - early diagnosis or peace of mind, you really can’t put a price on that."

J2 Medical provide medicals for all professional and amateur sports clubs as well as medicals and vaccines for occupational health, corporate, airlines, railways, cruise ships and many more.

Should you require medication, a private prescription is issued and your medication delivered next day to your doorstep! Or if you’re the more traditional type you can request private paper prescriptions for you to take to a pharmacy of your choice.

All testing includes an online consultation with one of the doctors at J2 Medical to interpret and convey the results of any tests undertaken and talk through any course of action that may be needed. There are no hidden fees.

Should you need specialist treatment, J2 Medical has a bank of consultants and world class surgeons covering a wide range of specialities both here in the UK and across the globe that they can connect you with - but they won’t leave it there; they'll be with you every step of the way, ensuring you get a five star service.

J2 Medical also provide Nutritional IV therapy packed full of electrolytes, vitamins and minerals that can help you get back to feeling your best; ideal for those recovering from colds, tummy bugs or a hangover, kick starting your diet, boosting sports performance or helping to bolster your immune system. An Introduction to IV Nutritional Therapy

The world is still reeling from the after-effects of the COVID-19 –both economically and in terms of personal health and well-being. Life is in an exhausting state of constant flux and we’re not spending enough time recuperating. That’s where IV therapy can help.

What is IV Nutritional therapy?

Intravenous (or IV) therapy is a fast and effective treatment designed to help cure what ails you. It’s a healthy boost for your body, delivering essential nutrients and fluids directly into your bloodstream where they can be immediately absorbed.

The treatment has been in use for centuries - doctors as far back as the 1600s attempted something similar. World War I medics prescribed IV therapy for soldiers suffering from exhaustion, fatigue, and dehydration, with the process becoming a lifesaving remedy.

Why use IV therapy?

Simply put, IV therapy is the most effective method of delivering nutrients throughout the body, being passed directly into your bloodstream with an absorption rate of 90-100%. However potent your edible vitamin supplements might be, they are first broken down by the digestive system, with as little as 20% absorbed.

Popular IV Treatments

IV therapy has a multitude of uses. It is, after all, a method of delivery, meaning our doctors and health experts can create different mixes of minerals and vitamins to best resolve specific complaints. These are some of our most popular treatments:

Feeling Lethargic

We recommend our Immuno Booster 250ml, containing B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, lysine, cystine, ornithine, and taurine. That’s a bunch of B vitamins to improve your body’s metabolism, along with a cocktail of amino acids to help you feel energised.

Feeling Run Down

We recommend our Ascorbic Acid treatment. This is a high dose of vitamin C, straight into your bloodstream to get where it’s needed most. Great for tissue repair, colds, and slumps, and a youthful glow.

General Wellbeing Boost

We recommend our Modified Myers plus, containing B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, and potassium chloride. Another mix of B vitamins for improved metabolism, this time with the addition of B12 to boost bone, tooth and muscle health, plus a mix of chloride salts to sort out your electrolyte levels.

Give Your Diet A Boost

We recommend our Fat Burner Plus 250ml, containing B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, galactose, ornithine, methionine, arginine, glycine, lysine, hydrochloride cysteine, taurine, and carnitine. This treatment gives you your B vitamins for improved metabolism, plus great bone, tooth and muscle health. The other minerals help to stimulate the growth of intestinal microflora, improve digestion, break down fats and build protein, reduce fatigue and increase energy.

Worried About Treatment?

If you’re new to IV therapy, there’s no need for concern. At J2 Medical, all treatments are administered in a calm and clean environment by a fully-qualified medical professional. Our spa-like clinic is approved by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and you get to relax and unwind in a quiet, peaceful room while your body absorbs the recommended treatment.

DISCOVER: THE MEDICINE TAP

This issue, we meet meet Rochdale entrepreneur, Caroline Norton, to find out more about her popular town centre 'coffee house, restaurant, bar and beer house", The Medicine Tap...

The Medicine Tap is situated in Rochdale's former Old Post Office, a beautiful Grade II listed building which originally opened in 1927. The building stands in the heart of Rochdale Town Centre against the backdrop of the Town Hall, and adjacent to the beautiful sunken gardens and Cenotaph.

Following a full refurbishment and complete change of use, this stunning venue re-opened in 2018 and has retained all of its original character and charm. With a nod to the building's rich history, The Medicine Tap offers a unique and inviting place to relax in whilst enjoying superb food and drink.

Owner, Caroline Norton, commented: "It's a very iconic building - we hear so many lovely stories of people meeting their partners just outside on the steps of the Post Office as in the past, it used to be a central meeting point for people courting! So we've tried to keep the history as much as possible. We've kept the Post Office sign and we've also got post boxes and safes inside. We've also got a private function room called The Vault."

The Medicine Tap has something to suit everyone, from coffees to breakfast bites, afternoon tea to evening dining, and beers to cocktails.

Caroline said: "We have well over 80 offerings of gins now, plus vodka and spirits. We also have 30 ales on draught, a lovely wine list and a popular cocktail menu. Our tag line is "What's your medicine? We've got it on tap!" ...and we really do!

"We also brew our own beer at our own brewery, Mighty Medicine, in Whitworth. Our staple favourites are Madchester Cream and Stunning Blonde which prove very popular."

The Medicine Tap offers quality, locally sourced fresh food with old favourites as well as steaks, burgers, pizza and pasta dishes and a sandwich menu. Their delicious dessert menu includes their very own "Gin-ton Mess", waffles and luxury ice cream sundaes.

Caroline said: "We have a selection of "Tap Favourites", which is our own take on heart-warming favourites - things that your Grandma might have made but with our personal style.

"I wanted The Tap to be a place that you can come with Grandma, a group of ladies can come for lunch, but equally you could come for a family meal or for breakfast with your partner; a place that you can go any time of the day for any occasion.

"There's also plug sockets and USB points if people would like to work in a different environment, while enjoying a coffee.

"We're family friendly and we make sure everyone always gets a very warm welcome."

Looking ahead to the festive season Caroline commented: "The chefs and I are currently working on our winter Brasserie menu and our festive menu is ready to be printed for party bookings! Our festive menu will be available from 24th November and will include some amazing dishes in addition to the traditional Christmas favourites."

Book online at www.themedicinetap.co.uk or call 01706 869828.

Writing a Will is something that we all know we should do but some of us never seem to get around to. In fact every year the number of people in the UK that do not have a Will increases! According to research, a staggering 60% of UK adults currently don't have a Will and an estimated 92% don't have a Lasting Power of Attorney. Out of the 40% of UK adults that have Wills, many don't regularly update them.

Rochdale’s very own Will Lady, Fiona Daly, is on a mission to change that and ensure local people and their families make their Wills & Wishes Legal.

After launching her client-focused company in February 2021, Fiona is keen to highlight the importance of reviewing your Will and keeping it up to date throughout your life.

Fiona commented: "My family and I were playing "the game of life" board game [a game following a person's travels through their life from early adulthood to retirement with college, jobs, marriage and children along the way] during the school holidays, and it made me think about how life changes over the years and how my life has changed over the years.

"In the last 22 years I trained to be a solicitor, I left home and moved into my first house, qualified as a solicitor, got married, had two children, moved into a family home and started a will writing business!

"All the above life events mean that I've regularly needed to review my Will and update it to ensure that it meets my intentions as my life changes. I need to know that my husband will be able to continue living in our home and is provided for and as my children are the most precious asset I have I need to know that should anything happen to both of us, my children will be looked after by guardians that I've chosen.

"In 2022 I've seen lots of clients with Wills from the eighties, that's a Will that is forty years old! Just think what's happened in a person's life over the last 40 years and how it's changed!"

Fiona has helped hundreds of local people and families to make sure they’re protected and aims to make the process simple and jargonfree: "Many clients don’t understand unnecessary legal jargon such as 'give, devise and bequeath' 'hereinafter' 'hereto' 'herewith' 'unto my

said husband' 'aforesaid' so I meet with my clients in their home, we have a brew and I ‘translate’ their Will for them! I tell the client what's in their Will and what it means.

"Clients are often surprised what they've got in their Wills when we read them - executors that have passed away years ago or have lost capacity, new family members that aren’t included in the Will as a beneficiary, beneficiaries that are named that they no longer wish to benefit from their Will.

"Ideally, a Will should be reviewed every 3-5 years. If you can’t remember when you made your Will the chances are it needs updating! Some clients can’t find a copy of their Will or have forgotten who wrote it – I can often help to locate it."

Fiona explains that one common mistake people make is having a standard/basic Will which doesn’t meet their needs:

"A standard Will is typically a Will that gifts the estate (all assets and possessions) to their spouse or partner, then after both spouses or partners have died to their children and then grandchildren. I listen to my clients talk about their wishes and their loved ones and advise them of their options. Many clients decide that a standard Will does not meet their wishes and they want a more complex Will with a trust or trusts. Trusts may be needed in many circumstances such as if you want to keep your home in the family, have children from a previous relationship, vulnerable children, children going through bankruptcy or divorce proceedings."

Another important legal document that is too often overlooked is a Lasting Power of Attorney, as Fiona explained:

"We never know what’s around the corner and unfortunately it’s not uncommon to suffer an injury or illness that causes lack of mental capacity so that a person can no longer make decisions for themselves and needs someone they trust to be their voice. The documents are used during life if or when needed, however they need making whilst a person has capacity so it’s really important that they’re made as soon as possible if you don’t have them. Unlike a Will that needs updating as life changes, a Lasting Power of Attorney that has been drafted by a professional like me should only need to be updated in exceptional circumstances so once they’ve been made and registered they should last for life."

JOLLY - THE LOCAL CHARITY WITH A BIG MISSION

Jolly Josh is a local charity that supports children with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), additional and complex needs, and their families and carers within Rochdale and the wider area.

Sarah Ford, Centre Manager at Jolly Josh shared the origins of the charity and some exciting recent projects that are already making a positive impact in the local community:

"'Joshua’s Journey' is one of love and heartache. Born in May 2016, Josh was healthy, thriving, and meeting all expected milestones. However, at four months old, the family began to see regression in

Josh’s development and at just six months old, a scan confirmed the devastating news that he had experienced ‘extensive brain damage’, meaning that he would be severely disabled.

"As Josh’s mum Carole Kelly began to settle into life as the mother of a child with Special Needs and Disabilities (SEND), and at the same time caring for Josh’s big sister Sophie, she soon realised the huge limitations on interacting with and gaining mutual support from other families in similar situations.

"Carole reduced her hours working as a primary school teacher to care for Josh and realised that the facilities and opportunities to meet other people in the same circumstances were very limited. Care provision seemed to start at the age of 4, and there were no facilities to support learning and interaction with other parents and children.

"In May 2017 Carole and her family were told that with the rapid deterioration in her son’s health caused by a metabolic condition called Mitochondrial Disease, little Josh had a few precious months, if not weeks, until he found peace.

"Giving up her job completely to become a full-time Mummy, Carole spent all her time taking every opportunity to create special forever memories with Josh, her daughter Sophie, husband James, and their loved ones. On May 16th, 2017, Josh began his palliative care journey and passed away just a few months later on 27th August 2017.

"Carole’s experiences and determination to create something positive, and by her own admission by way of a distraction, meant that Jolly Josh began offering ‘stay and play’ sessions to PMLD (Profound or Multi Learning Disabilities) children and their families on 27th September 2017, exactly one month after Josh’s passing."

With the help and use of facilities at Springside Primary School, Carole set up sessions for families just like hers and even arranged for professionals to come and visit the sessions for families to get one-toone information and help.

Carole opened weekly educational and sensory themed sessions, acquiring toys, seating aids and resources.

Jolly Josh was also able to provide special themed boxes of toys and aids which, as well as being a fantastic opportunity for families to access different themed play facilities at home, continues to provide income to the charity.

Becoming a charity…

In 2018, Jolly Josh became a charity! Within the first year of starting, Jolly Josh welcomed 63 families and 23 professionals from the NHS, other charities, and services, enabling children and families to connect, support and thrive.

In September 2019, Carole was able to make the announcement that, thanks to the generosity of two local businessmen, Peter Cordwell of PGC and Dan Taylor of Kerf Developments, Jolly Josh would soon be opening a brand new, bespoke facility –'A Place To Call Home'.

Plans for the centre included providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for its visitors and specialist play equipment, a support team, as well as much-needed hoists and bespoke Changing Places facilities.

Sarah explained: "Changing Places gives carers access to a purpose built changing and toilet facility including a height adjustable adult sized secure changing bench, ceiling track hoist and ample space. The centre’s Changing Place provides its users with a private, comfortable, and dignified place to get changed, use the toilet facilities, or simply to change pads."

In April 2022, following delays caused by the pandemic, 'A Place To Call Home' opened its doors.

The Jolly Josh Hydrotherapy pool…

Jolly Josh is opening a new hydrotherapy pool this month for 0-19 year olds with PMLD, complex medical needs and disabilities.

The hydrotherapy experience is a multisensory environment which helps to stimulate a child’s senses at the same time as having a calming effect on children with sensory and learning difficulties.

Sarah said: "The hydrotherapy pool is the only facility in the borough specifically for children with complex medical needs and will be a wonderful place for families to make forever memories while enjoying relaxing splash sessions together.

"Before now parents would have to travel to Manchester for their children to experience the benefits of warm water therapy. Among the many advantages of hydrotherapy, the experience of buoyancy in the pool assists children with movement in the water."

Exciting future plans...

With the Jolly Josh centre now open and running daily sessions for PMLD children of all ages and with October seeing a full timetable of availability for the Hydrotherapy Pool, the charity’s aim is to spread the word so as many children and families in the community can benefit from the services it offers.

A Jolly Josh session costs £23 to fund a child and their family to join in and £30 for a hydrotherapy session. Jolly Josh sessions are free of charge to children and their families.

Sarah commented: "The impact these sessions has on individuals and families is immeasurable and over the next 18 months we'll be concentrating all its efforts to welcoming as many visitors as possible to the Centre."

INTERVIEW WITH BEE SOBER: The relationship between mental wellbeing and alcohol

There are many reasons why people drink alcohol: to celebrate, feel more relaxed, socialise, commiserate, unwind from work, whilst some may use drink as a coping mechanism to mask difficult feelings or life events.

My grief counsellor once told me to be mindful of how you feel before you drink, and be mindful about why you want to drink – Are you angry at a situation and drinking to forget? Are you drinking to feel less present? Are you drinking to cope with past trauma? Are you happy and drinking to celebrate? These are all difficult but necessary and important questions to ask.

Many of us may have been on a night out looking like we’re having the time of our life…. and in many cases, we may be - but if our reasons for drinking are negative, should we really have that pint or glass of wine?

People who have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol can experience heightened levels of anxiety, depression, and experience other mental health difficulties. It’s important for us all to be self-aware about our headspace and if we decide that it’s not the right time for us to drink alcohol, we should never feel boring for doing so; putting your mental wellbeing first is necessary.

Life-long best friends, Lisa and Alex, who after realising that their relationship with alcohol was negatively impacting on their mental health, decided to set up the Littleborough based charity, Bee Sober - a community of people who want to find fun, joy, happiness and friendship without revolving around alcohol.

Lisa founded Bee Sober Manchester purely as a meet up group for like-minded sober people to "socialise and feel less alone on their journey". With two other women Lisa met on Instagram, they held their first sober social event and over 30 people attended. From here, they went on to host regular events in the Manchester area.

When Alex became sober a year later, Lisa and Alex both started The Sober Experiment Podcast and decided to set up a non-profit organisation called Bee Sober to help people who wanted to live a sober

lifestyle, feel normal on their journey. It has now changed from purely social events to supporting people to get and stay sober.

What advice would you give to someone that is going on a night out, doesn’t want to drink, and is feeling anxious about what their friends may think?

"We are both such strong-minded people, it would be really difficult to talk either of us into anything we didn’t want to do. That’s been helpful for staying sober and saying no to peer pressure.

We are both really loud and proud about our sobriety and so sure that this is the life we want to live, our whole demeanour shouts "no thanks" to alcohol.

"Our advice would be to plan ahead and make sure people know your intentions. "I am not drinking because I feel better sober" is not something people can argue against. A true friend will support your decisions no matter what."

| Rochdale Style22

Grieving a loss of a loved one is tough and encounters many emotions. How did grief affect your relationship with alcohol?

"We have both lost loved ones during our drinking days and our sober days [Lisa lost her Step-Dad when she was 18 and Alex lost her Dad at 31]. Both our Dad’s were pub landlords, drinkers, and had alcoholrelated deaths. I guess in hindsight, we both drank more through these times to numb out the feelings of loss and grief."

More recently, Alex suffered a miscarriage and her drinking escalated, subsequently becoming her 'coping tool', which negatively impacted her mental health. The realisation that drinking became her 'coping tool' for her miscarriage motivated Alex to implement positive steps towards sobriety and experience the benefits of live without alcohol.

Someone may be reading this and coming to the realisation that they are using drink as a coping mechanism. What advice would you give to them?

"Please reach out to someone, whether this is a friend, relative, charity, or health professional, as there is so much help out there. Accepting you have a negative relationship with alcohol then opens doors to implement positive coping mechanisms that don’t revolve around alcohol."

Being a big believer in positivity, gratitude, and mindfulness, I asked Lisa and Alex if that had helped them in their journey of sobriety. Lisa explained that she has positive affirmations on her bedroom mirror, and enjoys long walks, hikes, wild camping, waterfall hunting, wild swimming, meditation and yoga.

Alex struggled to find methods like this useful, taking a very scientific and black and white approach to sobriety. However, over time, and with guidance from Lisa, positivity, gratitude, and mindfulness have also been a big part of her journey.

Alex commented: "Both of us are constantly grateful for our friendship, our community and our sober lifestyle and focusing on the positives that sobriety brings is what has brought us to this point".

If you find yourself questioning your own relationship with alcohol or you are wondering if you should try sobriety, Bee Sober have a free Sober Experiment and host "The Sober Experiment Podcast" that can be found on their website.

They also have a subscription membership, which includes regular online dropin sessions that run at various times throughout the week and are run by volunteer ambassadors, fitness sessions that run every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning, a weekly group coaching and priority booking on all their events.

The subscription helps to fund Bee Sober's discounted coaching and counselling as well as being able to financially support people who need it, all of which can help people to get and stay sober. They also run wellbeing workshops and social events; one of Lisa's favourites is the monthly coldwater dip based in the Rochdale area for sober and sober curious people.

Lisa commented: "Our vision is to be as well-known as AA and SMART recovery as we offer something a little bit different."

To find out more information and to join the Bee Sober community, please visit their website beesoberofficial.com.

Bee Sober also need your help to continue to support people in the community. Organising a fundraiser or donating are amazing ways you can get involved and help them to reach more people.

If you take anything from this article, please talk about your problems rather than mask them with a drink and remember there is plenty of support and help out there.

JIM BENTLEY AFC MANAGER

On his second week in the job, Style caught up with Dale's new manager Jim Bentley.

A former defender, Jim had a 17 year affinity with Morecambe, firstly as a player and then as manager, having taking over the managerial reigns there in 2011, at the club where he had spent the majority of his senior playing career.

During his eight-and-a-half year spell in charge of the football league side, he managed over 400 games and was the longest serving manager across the Premier League and EFL until his departure in October 2019 to join AFC Fylde.

Style: What first attracted you to Rochdale and how has your first week been?

Jim: Rochdale has always struck me as a decent, solid club over the years, either playing or managing against them.

Although we find ourselves in a difficult situation at the moment, I’m thankful to be here. We know it’s had it’s off field problems but it’s well run and now it’s got a structure in place. It's also an honest, hard working football club, in an honest and hard working area. It’s my type of place... it’s my type of club. Hopefully the future is bright for us here.

The first week was very hectic. I’ve come in on the Monday, we’ve had a game against Accrington on the Tuesday along with Nick Chadwick signing as Assistant Manager. We had deadline day on the Thursday, then we were preparing for the game Friday, ahead of the game on

Saturday away at Carlisle - so my first week was very, very busy. I have really enjoyed it despite a lack of sleep!

Who do you take your leadership inspiration from?

My biggest inspiration in life was my father, who sadly passed away 15 years ago. He was a footballer himself, came through the ranks at Everton FC, played for the first team, then went on to Telford United becoming their record goalscorer. He’s had a stand named after him so he’s obviously a big name there.

I’ve got two older brothers and the three of us looked up to him growing up with how thorough he was and how organised he was. He was always someone I could speak to as he’s been there and done it. Even though he’s been gone 15 years he is still a massive inspiration for me.

"It’s my type of place... it’s my type of club."
| Rochdale Style28
ROCHDALE
style exclusive

How has your playing experience influenced your managerial style?

Anybody who’s a professional footballer is in a privileged position to get paid to do something they love and should always try to enjoy it, work hard and play at the highest level you can and for me it was League Two.

It's about working hard, being respectful and honest, giving it your all and embracing the challenge and I think I’ve took that into my managerial career as well. When I was a captain at clubs I tried to create a spirit and I think I try to do that as a manager as well.

Rochdale is known for developing young players into the first team - are you hoping to harness the strength of the academy?

100%! Again from the outside looking in, it’s always a football club that’s done well on that side. I want to embrace that, much like we did at Fylde and Morecambe, such as getting them training with us and if they’re good enough get them on the pitch.

I was fortunate to do that in my first game with Kevin Dos Santos coming on the pitch at 15 year of age. It’s great for the kid and his family and it’s massive for Rochdale and the academy as well.

We’ll certainly be tapping into Tony Ellis (Academy Manager) who’s got a proven track record; he’s a good person and there’s some other good academy staff.

We’ve spoken regularly since I’ve been in the door. We’ve had young lads training with us, we’ve had an in house game with the weekend's game being called off and played quite a few of them.

We had a game last week in the U23 Central League Cup where I think we ended up with about eight of our academy players on the pitch.

People can always relate to one of their own, such as Ethan Brierley who’s doing really well at the minute Kevin Dos Santos, Jordan Scanlon, Brad Kelly.

Who would be on your dream 5-a-side team?

From the players I’ve played with at Morecambe and Telford I’d choose Barry Roche as goalkeeper, who’s currently goalkeeper coach at Morecambe now. Easily big enough to fill a 5-a-side goal too.

I used to play with a player called Michael Twiss at Morecambe, who came through the ranks at Man United, with a sweet left foot who Peter Schmeichel said has the harshest shot he’d faced.

Carl Baker was another good technical player I played with so I’d definitely say him too. Alongside him I’d say Dave Perkins to do a bit of running, who I know is a bit of a Rochdale legend - I played with him at Morecambe and managed at Fylde. He’s still playing now at 40 years of age and can do everything on a pitch.

I’d love to play in that team, so I’d say myself at the back infront of Barry Roche so not many would get past us and the front three would do the rest!

You stepped away from football for a while since leaving Fylde; what did you get up to?

Yes, I think it was because I’ve had a bit of an issue myself 18 months ago. I’m fully over it now but I think coming off the back of covid and having the operation that I had, a double heart bypass, it can make you take stock of life.

I'd been in the game for 30 years, signed for Man City as a 16 year old kid then suddenly I’m 46 working the same times flat out, so it was nice to take some time out, take stock, assess things and spend time with my family.

We did quite a bit of camping with the family going to certain places such as North Wales, Shropshire; getting out, catching up with people and going to watch a couple of games.

The most important thing was spending time with my family due to the time they had off school, making tea for the wife and kids... but now I’ve rested and I'm ready to go again.

You were loved by the fans at Morecambe due to your committment during tough circumstances… do you have a message for Dale fans this season?

Get behind your side. This football club has been here many many years and the most important people at the football club are the fans. Managers, players, board members all come and go but the ones who are always here are the fans.

We want to give them something to be proud of and show that we are all in it together. It’s certainly important with the position we are in right now that they get behind us and push us on up the table.

31Rochdale Style | 1OCTOBER2022–8JANUARY2023 A new exhibition by queer feminist textile artist Liz Collins. GuestcuratedbyJuliaBryan-Wilson. LizCollins_Poster_A1.indd 1

What's On in the Arts

What a great summer we have had with so much for us to enjoy and engage with! Among the many highlights it was wonderful to see the town centre’s many excellent venues bouncing to high quality music with the return of the Feel Good and the Rochdale Folk Festivals.

The town continutes to offer a multitude of exciting, stimulating events and activities as we move into autumn and winter 2022.

On the visual arts front we have a UK first as Touchstones Rochdale unveils “Mischief” this Autumn with an exclusive new exhibit from American queer feminist artist Liz Collins’ with her first European exhibition.

The Mischief exhibition, created in collaboration with Touchstones Rochdale Gallery and Museum and guest Curator Dr Julia BryanWilson, will take over all four gallery spaces and see immersive installations transforming spaces with intricately hand stitched wall pieces to industrially manufactured sculptural works.

Mischief uses explosive patterns and colours to transform everyday life inspirations into a fun, mischievous aesthetic, exploring the boundaries between art and design through textiles and fibre.

Guest curator Julia Bryan-Wilson said: "With her bold textiles and radical graphics, Liz Collins creates dazzlingly powerful works. Her aesthetic mischief blurs the lines between art, craft, and design."

Complementing the Mischief exhibition will be “Queer, People, Places and Things”, an extra special exhibit co-curated by a group of LGBTQ+ Rochdale locals stemming from Liz’s desire to provide a platform for the voices of queer artists.

Twenty pieces of work, chosen by Collins and Bryan-Wilson, will be shown alongside some significant pieces from the Rochdale Borough collections, The Walker Art Gallery, and Bolton Museum & Art Gallery, all presented through a queer lens.

Mischief is at Touchstones from Saturday 1 October 2022 – Sunday 8 January 2023. yourtrustrochdale.co.uk/venues/touchstones-rochdale

It is never too early to get excited about panto season!

Watch Strictly Come Dancing star Katya Jones in the role of the evil Wicked Queen plus a star-studded cast from across stage and screen in this year’s Christmas production of Snow White at Middleton Arena.

Snow White will be played by BGT finalist Lucy Kay. BBC’s Hacker T.Dogg will also feature in the performance, voicing the Magic Mirror and back by popular demand, Matthew Siveter will take his rightful role as Dame Dolly.

The magical pantomime, based on the classic Disney fairy-tale, promises “epic songs, dazzling dance routines, stunning scenery, breath-taking costumes, and astounding 3D special effects that will get everyone into the festive spirit”.

Abigail Hindle, Events and Programming Manager at Your Trust Rochdale said: “It may be the end of summer right now, but the preparations for this year’s wickedly entertaining Christmas panto have begun. We’re really excited to have so many stars grace our Middleton Arena stage this winter, and they’re sure to create a performance to remember. You’ll be in for a treat at Snow White with lots of hilarity, insane special effects, and a truly unforgettable experience for all the family.”

Enjoy musical excellence with ORTOA and TLC

Let the organ thunder…

ORTOA (Oldham, Rochdale & Tameside Organists’ Association) had its beginnings in an Oldham café in 1908. It soon embraced organists from neighbouring Ashton and Rochdale and in 1913 they held the first recital at Rochdale Town Hall. The current association has continued this tradition since 1979. Currently the Honorary President is Jonathan Scott, international virtuoso, and resident organist at the Bridgewater Hall.

Following the closure of Rochdale Town Hall for extensive renovation, the committee decided it would concentrate on performances at some of the excellent venues and organs in the area. Since then, there have been recitals at St Paul’s in Royton and Albion United Reformed Church in Ashton-under-Lyne, as well as Rochdale’s Parish Church, St Chad’s.

The next organ virtuoso concert will be at St Chad's at 3pm on Saturday 8 October 2022 with Philip Rushworth of Chester Cathedral in a varied programme to showcase this fine instrument. Contact: Hon Sec Barrie Brailsford 01706 343163

Family Theatre Performances at M6 Studio

M6 Theatre Company present Sunflowers and Sheds, an original show for family audiences in Rochdale this October.

As part of a prestigious national tour, special community performances from the award-winning theatre company will take place at M6 Studio Theatre, Albert Royds Street on Saturday 8 October.

Sunflowers and Sheds features a gentle mix of music, puppetry and storytelling and will transport audiences to a lovingly created lifesize allotment. With Frank’s family so far away, he passes the time on his beloved plot. When the allotment next door becomes vacant, he really looks forward to meeting his new neighbour. Until she arrives that is!

This charming tale about a lonely old man and a young Ukrainian woman reminds us that, with the breaking down of barriers, true friendship can grow in the most unlikely conditions.

M6’s Artistic Director and co-creator of the show, Gilly Baskeyfield, said: "We chose to set the story of this unlikely friendship on the fertile ground of an allotment - a place where the patchwork and diversity of people and plants grow side by side.

"Sunflowers and Sheds gives children the opportunity to watch this special friendship develop and to discover what lies beneath the surface - of soil and people. Staged on gorgeously recreated allotments and with original music and a strong emotional story, we discover that surprises are more enjoyable, and disappointments more bearable, when shared with a friend."

Performances will take place at 1.30pm and 3.30pm on Saturday 8 October and are suitable for everyone aged 4 and over. Audiences are invited to ‘pay what you feel’ on the day but tickets need to be booked in advance from M6 Theatre by calling 01706 355898 or emailing admin@m6theatre.co.uk.

I first interviewed Hopwood DePree for Style Magazine just over four years ago. I had accompanied him on his visit to the Local Studies Library at Touchstones and was impressed with Hopwood's boundless enthusiasm to restore Hopwood Hall to its former glory. I wrote, "If anyone can save this Grade II * listed building, it will be this man, the hall's namesake".

A great deal has happened to the world since 2018 and that includes the progress of the restoration of the hall. I met Hopwood recently for a catchup.

During much of the lockdown, Hopwood was stranded in his native USA and – like many of us – had to change his daily routine. One positive outcome from those bleak months was that Hopwood had the time to write a book, Downton Shabby subtitled "One American's ultimate DIY adventure restoring his family's English castle".

The book is a fascinating and highly enjoyable read. With his background in acting and production, Hopwood is a natural and engaging communicator. Downton Shabby has been a great success on both sides of the Atlantic and is having a second printing.

Another bonus to come out of the lockdown – when renovation and stabilising work inside Hopwood Hall ground to a halt – was the setting up of a gardening group to tackle over thirty years of neglect and overgrowth around the hall. Over 6000 volunteer hours have been notched up over the last two years. Thanks to a partnership with Groundwork Manchester, some Himalayan balsam “bashing” has also been done to reduce this invasive foreign species in the surrounding woodland.

Post-lockdown, there has been a highly successful Open Day in early summer and there will be another later in the year.

Apprentices and building students from nearby Hopwood Hall College have been working with the busy restoration team. Work has resumed on the Servants Quarters which was in a particularly bad state with widespread dry rot; luckily, this wing of the old hall was saved just in time, even though there was the two year delay in the work there.

During our chat, Hopwood was keen to stress the future use of the hall as a community arts centre. He is Chair of the Hopwood Foundation for Heritage, Arts, Education and Inspiration, a registered charity.

After our second meeting, I remain impressed with Hopwood's enthusiasm and energy to restore Hopwood Hall.

His very first visit to the derelict building was nearly a decade ago and he has been leading the project since late 2017.

Hopwood sees himself as a “producer”, spearheading a team of experts and volunteers. Both Hopwoods – DePree and Hall! - have faced extraordinary challenges in the last few years, but the outlook is very good.

Hopwood has committed several years of his busy life to this project. The support and interest in the restoration of the hall from Middleton and Rochdale folk has been extraordinary and thoroughly deserved. It is worth emphasising that all this is being done for the benefit of our community.

The restoration project has benefited from a six figure sum from Historic England as part of the Cultural Recovery Fund, with additional money from Rochdale Council. By next year, the building will be accessible to the public and, more importantly, waterproof!

You can follow the progress of the hall's restoration on YouTube channel Hopwood XIV. You can join Hopwood Foundation Friends through the website, www.hopwooodxiv.com. For a minimum donation of £10 a year you will receive a newsletter, regular updates and invitations to special events.

Downton Shabby by Hopwood Depree (William Morrow) is available at most bookshops and on Amazon.

Beauty: Money saving tips

The cost of living has soared, with increased prices in fuel, gas and electric amongst other daily necessities. With the current financial climate how can we still indulge in pampering and self love without the guilt?

Here are my top ten tips:

Add 'salon gift vouchers' to the top of your Christmas or birthday wishlist! Family and friends will always prefer to buy you something they know you'll enjoy.

Many salons are looking for models to enable students to practice their beauty skills. In a reputable salon the student is always supervised and you will end up with lovely results for a fraction of the cost.

Make the most of loyalty cards for your local beauty salon.

Keep an eye on your local salon's social media pages for the latest special offers, discounts or last minute cancellations which could be offered at a reduced rate.

Using better quality products is a great idea as ingredients are more effective therefore you use a lot less! Use a spatula to decant product. Remember a little goes a long way. This is not only more hygienic but it also ensures you are only scooping out the appropriate amount of product.

Use muslin cloths or a flannel - these are reusable and much more environmentally friendly than pads and wipes... and cheaper too! They also enable you to use a smaller amount of product and make it go further.

Take care of products so they last longer - keep the lids on and out of direct sunlight or in extreme temps, products should be kept at room temperature.

Keep up with regular maintenance appointments on your beauty treatments to save money in the long run. By maintaining your nails and lashes etc it saves you having to keep paying for another full set which is usually more expensive.

Talk to skin specialists at your local salon and ask for the products they would personally recommended for your skin, then recreate your own spa experience at home.

Many of the best loved beauty brands now offer refillable products at a slightly cheaper price in an effort to cut down on waste.

Remember, ME-time is an investment in ourselves in order to face the pressures of life. It’s amazing how much better you feel once you’ve taken time out and invested in your skin, nails, body and mind with a beauty treatment.

AUTUMN FASHION TRENDS

Happy autumn!

Welcome to my favourite season of the year. I am here for the cosy nights, hot chocolate and most importantly, the lush knitwear.

If you are new here let me introduce myself... I'm Mollie, owner and founder of Pretty Parade Boutiques in Littleborough and Ramsbottom.

I have worked within the fashion industry for over six years and my day to day consists of working closely with my customers assisting them to find the perfect shapes, prints and styles!

It’s safe to say we’re now well and truly into autumn and the whole host of new trends that have arrived with it.

MY TOP STYLE TIPS:

When in doubt, go MONOCHROME - it is the easiest outfit solution ever! When it comes to style solutions that check every box, including low effort (always), playful and comfortable, monochrome outfits continue to reign supreme. A monochrome outfit is a full outfit that only uses one single colour or a combination of black and white.

Whilst colour blocking has to be this A/W biggest trend (gone are the days of clashing colour’s being a fashion disaster), creating a monochrome outfit is the easiest and simplest way to stay on trend for those who feel a little less confident with the bright colour clashing. You will also find monochrome will make having a capsule wardrobe easier, and a little more professional for work.

A common theme this season is borrowing summer’s bold and bright colour trends and making them work for autumn. Rather than adding colours to your clothes, try a bold bag, scarf or shoes - you may find these an easier introduction into the world of colour.

An oldie, but goodie - THE PLEATED SKIRT is back for autumn, and I am not mad about it. While they have been off the radar for a little time, the trend is here to stay and will soon become one of your wardrobe staples.

My favourite thing about the pleated skirt is how effortlessly you can dress them up or down.

They are perfect to wear with a jumper and boots for work, or bodysuit and heels for drinks with the girls or alternatively a simple tee with your favourite trainers for an easy weekend look.

Whether you choose a patterned or one block colour you will be sure to be able to find a multitude of easy ways to really make use of your new pleated skirt and make sure you are the centre of attention. If you haven’t tried the pleated skirt yet, make sure you DO!

I have so many customers who have the misconception that they are unflattering and make you look "hippy" this is absolutely not the case! The best tip I can give you is try, try, try! Every pleated skirt is different, if one doesn’t suit you don’t let that stop you from trying a different one! I find the ones with the slightly wider waistbands to be the most flattering.

Can it be TOO oversized - Ready to bundle up and look good? The return of the OVERSIZED PUFFER COAT is back for another year and this time around they are MORE oversized than ever. There is absolutely a fine line on how oversized you should go though. Of course, we need room to layer (it is the UK after all), and it needs to be comfy (comfort is key, am I right?) but you don’t want your coat to wear you. A really good tip to know if it’s TOO big, is to make sure it sits on your shoulders, and you can sit down comfortably without feeling like there is too much fabric. Another tip would be to take a friend with you, and ask their opinion!

The humble puffer is always understandably popular. They are one of the easiest coats to style, because the coat really does speak for itself. They are available in so many styles, lengths and colours it makes it super easy to find one that's perfect for you.

A coat is a simple way to make your outfit in winter, it's the final touch that pulls your whole look together, to the point where I hate taking mine off when I go inside. That’s why its SO important to make sure you get it right, if you are like me you will absolutely have more than one winter coat to go with all your outfits!

Fashion is just trends we follow, but style is how you make the trends personal to you. As always remember to shop local, shop small and shop happy!

See you again soon, Mollie x Instagram @mollieb_
