MeSSage from the editor

Welcome to Style’s autumn edition…

The season of crunchy leaves, rainy days, bonfires, pumpkins and wellies! Summer might be over, but there’s still so much going on in our borough this season. The Literature & Ideas Festival will see many famous faces and exciting events popping up around Rochdale on 19th-24th October. It’s also a great time of year to explore the local countryside in all its colourful autumnal glory. The river has now been reopened in the heart of the town centre, next to our magnificent Town Hall. The Gracie Fields statue has also just been unveiled in the Town Hall Square; a lasting tribute to Rochdale’s most famous daughter.

The reopening of the River Roch by Clive Lawrence

The award winning project to re-open the River Roch and expose the town’s historic bridge is now complete. Rochdale is now the only borough in Greater Manchester to have a river running through the heart of its town centre. Thousands of local people enjoyed a free celebration event this summer, with heritage activities for all the family.

Team GB on the journey home

STYLE EXCLUSIVE

Nicola with the team at Brown's Cakes on St Mary's Gate

ROCHDALE’S OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALLIST,

NICOLA WHITE ROCHDALE-BORN HOCKEY STAR, NICOLA WHITE, BAGGED HERSELF A GOLD MEDAL IN RIO THIS SUMMER. NICOLA SCORED THE ALL-IMPORTANT EQUALISER IN THE FINAL, FORCING THE GAME TO A PENALTY SHOOTOUT. GREAT BRITAIN’S WOMEN’S HOCKEY TEAM THEN TRIUMPHED 2-0, AGAINST THE NETHERLANDS, LEADING TO CELEBRATIONS ALL ROUND, FROM RIO TO ROCHDALE!

It was Great Britain’s first ever gold medal in women’s Olympic hockey, an achievement made even more impressive considering that the Netherlands had won this event in the previous two Olympic games. Style caught up with Nicola to find out how she’s adjusting to life as a gold medallist… 4

www.rochdalestyle.com

How does it feel to be an Olympic gold medallist? Even though it sounds cringe, it is a dream come true. It’s a goal I set myself when I was very little after watch the likes of Dame Kelly Holmes, Colin Jackson and Sally Gunnel plus many more and I have always aspired to reach it one day. To actually have an Olympic gold medal fills me with satisfaction and pride to know that with a lot of hard work

Brown's Cakes designed a special celebration cake for Nicola

and determination, a once fairytale dream can be achieved. What is your favourite memory from the Games? I would say on the pitch, apart from winning the gold, would be scoring my Andy Murray overhead smash against Japan. I’ll remember that for a while. Off the pitch I’d say going up Sugarloaf Mountain and seeing Copacabana beach. We were on a coach just singing Barry Manilow hits!

Were you nervous going into the final or did you always believe you could win? I was nervous as it is always a close game against Holland, however I had an underlying confidence as I know they hate playing us and I knew we had a great deal of positive momentum taking us to that point. I did have to calm myself down in the tunnel as I could feel the butterflies going and the hairs on my arms standing on end, but I was telling myself they are good nerves and to use them to feel powerful and impactful.

the evenings flicking though all the channels and cheering anyone from GB on, it was really good fun, even if we didn’t know them! What was life like in the Olympic village? It’s a great experience but can be challenging if you’re not disciplined in there, as distractions and food and time on your feet can really effect your performance. Team GB had brompton bikes that we could use to explore the village, as it’s quite big! There is an international zone where you can get your nails painted, a Samsung experience, deck chair and beach to chill out and obviously food 24/7. This is very tempting, especially for athletes who eat a lot, so you have to think about your meal times and not indulge too much. There were some tennis courts, 5-a-side football pitches and swimming pools which lots of athletes used to relax pre and post competing. One of the main activities is pin badge swapping! Trying to fill your accreditation with as many countries as possible is a favourite of many.

How did it feel to score the equaliser? That moment felt like it took forever to go over the line. The ball just fell in a melee of players and I was just in amazement that I was close enough to it and literally said to myself, just get it towards goal!!! When it went in I just screamed and celebrated with teammates; our emotions were already sky high anyway with the game being so close but I knew that was the equaliser and it would get us to shuffles.

What did you do during your free time in Rio? We had a team trip to Sugarloaf Mountain on arrival as we don’t have much, if any, free time out of the village. It was an incredible experience and the scenery was breathtaking, there’s nothing to compare. Within the village we had some free time which consisted of relaxing on our balconies, cycling around the park on bikes, or visiting the international zone where there are fun things to do for all the athletes.

Team GB had their most successful Olympics ever. As well as your teammates, who else were you most impressed by at the Games? I really enjoyed watching Adam Peaty and the swimming - he has done phenomenally well and I’m sure he’s got more in him as well. I was also impressed with the show jumping and equestrian, and it’s mindblowing to watch. We would just sit there in

We have heard that hockey girls know how to party?! How did you all celebrate? Indeed, this is how we are perceived! We do like a good party and as a group we do create quite a lot of noise, especially singing and dancing! The final night at the GB House was without a doubt the best team party we’ve had over the cycle. I don’t think I got in until 4am!

Being onboard the Olympic plane must have been surreal? Yes I think everyone just wanted to be home at this point to show off the medals and get a good night’s sleep in their own comfy beds. The plane was great fun, we had photos in first class as gold medallists, then they brought the champagne round and before we took off we sang the national anthem loud and proud with the tannoy! It took us quite a while to settle down with there being 19 of us and we were making the most of the free alcohol! Landing at Heathrow was so much fun as I remember back to Beijing where there was something similar welcoming the athletes home, so it felt surreal that this time i was on the plane being escorted live on TV. What has life been like since you've been back on British soil? Since being back I’ve been on a champagne diet! Can’t say no to that! I’ve been on CNN news, radio, newspapers and requests for school and club visits are coming in thick and fast. It’s hard to get around everyone but I’m trying to see as many people as possible and promote hockey to all. I’ve been to see all my sponsors, Zen Office, AMP Wire and Standeaven who have been behind me all the way. What's next for you? That’s a good question and I’m not entirely sure myself yet. I do know I want some time off to see friends and family and I’m off to Vietnam in a few weeks for a holiday so that will be an awesome break with my boyfriend. After that it will be a case of deciding to continue on the programme or not, so I’m hoping a bit of rest time will help me on this. I would like to start some form of work and I’m looking around for opportunities in London as I need to start developing other skills in business, marketing, branding, media etc, but for now it will just be enjoying the gold medal and the achievement of GB Hockey. How would you encourage young people who are inspired by your achievements? Definitely get yourself down to a local club, or hockey festival if there is one near you. Keep it sociable with friends so take them with you and enjoy learning a new sport if you haven’t played before. Team sports are great for building confidence and making new friends so don’t be shy in joining new clubs. Also make sure you set yourself a ‘DREAM’ in life, because having something to aspire towards when you’re older can really give you a sense of achievement and a pathway of goals to keep targeting.

STYLE EXCLUSIVE TOP ROCHDALE CHEF

TOM MCNEENEY STYLE CAUGHT UP WITH THE OXFORD PUB’S TOM MCNEENEY, FOLLOWING HIS STAGE DEBUT AT THE RECENT ROCHDALE FEEL GOOD FESTIVAL. WE CHAT ABOUT HIS PASSION FOR FOOD, HOME COOKING TIPS AND HIS LOVE FOR HIS HOMETOWN…

Style: You made your debut alongside celebrity chefs at the Feel Good Festival - How did it feel to be in the spotlight? Tom: It was an awesome experience, it’s something that was quite new to me but I loved every minute of it - there was a proper buzz about the whole thing that was great to be part of. All credit to the festival organisers for giving me the opportunity to appear on the line up - it was a bold move for them because people come to these events to watch people they’ve heard of, but I think we went down really well and it’s a gamble that paid off. You appear to have a lot of confidence but were you secretly nervous before the festival? Oh god yes, like I say this is all very new to me and there was a definitely a few last minute jitters the morning of the festival so we went and sat in San 8

www.rochdalestyle.com

Remo, had a coffee and sorted our set list out then we were fine really. When I say ‘we’, I was really lucky to have Ben who works with me at the pub come along for the festival; he did a lot of the cooking so I could just present - I couldn’t have done it without him. Were you pleased with how it went? Couldn’t be happier… we finished a little under time and we set fire to a tea towel, but otherwise it was excellent. We’ve had some brilliant feedback and the chef’s tent was packed full so that’s all I could have hoped for. Did you meet any of the other celebrity chefs who made an appearance? I met Aazam Ahmad who was a real gent; he’s got a proper passion for the festival and for Rochdale. We’ve kept in touch so you might see us together on the bill for a few more festivals yet, we’ll have to wait and see. Guo Yue was phenomenal. We turned

up to set up and he was backstage just playing his flute like a wizard, it was a bit mesmerising really. And of course we bumped into Andrew Nutter - we go way back but it was great to finally share a stage with him; it’s what the festival is really about, bringing people from Rochdale together. I’d have stayed to meet a few more but my mate Jack Kay was opening the main stage so I had to dash. Are you hoping to be back next year? If they’ll have me I’d love to. The festival’s Twitter account called me the ‘new festival favourite’ so, I mean, that looks promising. We can definitely see you as the next Gino D'Campo (with a Rochdale accent!). Following on from your YouTube videos and your success at the festival, is television something you'd like to pursue if the opportunity arose?

TOM’S FAVOURITE RECIPE… BOVRIL BRAISED BEEF Bovril is a dream to cook with - it’s packed so full of big, bold, beefy flavours that just warm the bones of you when it comes to eating it. is is a bit of a return to the sort of food I first learned to cook when I was a starting out as chef, it’s proper hearty, no faff food and that’s perfect for the coming months.

I’d love to hear Gino D’Campo say anything in a Rochdale accent! What’s Italian for ‘cruckle’? Unless the Hairy Bikers need a third member I doubt I’m getting on TV anytime soon, but of course it’d be a great thing to come about. Get the town on the box for something positive for once. I’m starting a new YouTube channel and Facebook page later this year which is going to have a whole heap of recipes and I’m even going to do cocktails on there! What would you love to be doing in 10 years’ time? If I’m still where I am now in 10 years I’d be thrilled. I get to do a job I love, surrounded by my family and working with a fantastic set of people. I’m lucky to have a beautiful other half who is behind me in everything I do. If the next ten years are just more of the same then I’ll have led a fantastic life. What's your all time favourite dish? On Christmas Eve every year we buy a great big rib of beef from the butcher (Chadwick’s) and roast it so it’s still good and pink in the middle. We lock up the pub for the night, all go home as a family and eat proper beef sandwiches on bread rolls with horseradish and onions steeped in vinegar. It’s not just the food, it’s about all being together for that moment, it’s just perfect. Food’s amazing like that, eating something can take you back to a specific time and place in a mouthful - there isn’t anything quite like it. What advice would you give to our readers who want to inject some variation into their home cooking? Just to have a bit of faith in yourself - everyone’s got a different style of cooking and it’s about finding what works best for you. Some people hate recipes and do everything by eye, a dash of this and a sprinkle of that (guilty); others love to be meticulous - order and reason are the rules of their kitchen and that’s great too. It’s about finding out what works best for you and running with it. Invest in a good notebook and keep track of what you do, when you throw some chorizo in your Spag Bol and everyone loves it be sure to write that down, then next time you come to make it you know exactly how to bring the funk to your dish. Finally... You're a big advocate of shopping locally and supporting our town. What's the best thing about Rochdale? The people. Hands down, Rochdale has the most incredible people you’d ever want to meet. We’re a small town with a big heart. Over the last few years there’s been some pretty tough times for Rochdale and to see how people come together through these rocky patches is amazing. We’re on the up, there’s no doubt about it and that’s down to the awesome people of this town. Ruth Meredith

INGREDIENTS (Serves 4) 4 8oz pieces of braising steak Salt & pepper Splash of olive oil 1 good knob of butter 2 large onions cut into rounds 75ml red wine 1 pint of hot water 5 tbsp plain flour Splash of Worcestershire sauce 4 tbsp Bovril (powdered is better) 4 carrots, peeled & in large batons 1 swede, peeled & in large batons METHOD Grab yourself a decent sized dish and place the meat in it, season the steaks with salt, pepper and Bovril. Get your hands in and work the mix onto the meat, cover and leave for one hour. Place a large casserole pan on a medium heat, add a splash of olive oil and a good knob of butter. Once the butter is melted, dust your steaks with flour and place in the pan one by one - seal them off, then set them aside, keeping any of the remaining marinade to one side. row your onions into the pan and keep them moving they’re going to want to stick but you’re not going to let them - at this point don’t leave the stove for anything, don't answer the phone or the door, it could result in calamity. After a minute throw in a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce and your red wine (pour yourself a glass while you're at it, you deserve it) then scrape, scrape, scrape the bottom of the pan until all that lovely cooked on goodness comes off. Place your meat back in along with any of the left over marinade and add in the water. Cover and leave on a low light for about 1.5 hours, then add your vegetables and give it another 20 minutes until the veg is just tender and the meat could fall apart under a strong stare. In a small, separate bowl combine a few spoonfuls of the cooking liquid with 1 tbsp of plain flour, then pour the mixture back into your casserole pan to thicken. Check the seasoning at this point, then serve on a bed of buttered mash, with a bottle of red wine, preferably while it’s throwing it down outside. www.rochdalestyle.com

RUSSELL KANE RIGHT MAN, WRONG AGE

RUSSELL KANE IS A CHANGED MAN. FOR HIS RIGHT MAN, WRONG AGE TOUR, YOU MAY ENCOUNTER SOMEONE WITH A NEW LOOK, FRESH PERSPECTIVES AND A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO HIS COMEDY. “IN THE LAST YEAR I’VE BEEN MARRIED AND HAD A BABY. I’VE CHANGED MY HAIR, I’VE CHANGED MY LOOK, I’VE THROWN ALL MY EYELINER IN THE BIN. I LITERALLY WENT TO MY WARDROBE ONE DAY AND GOT ALL MY RIDICULOUS CLOTHES AND TOOK THEM TO THE SUE RYDER SHOP FOR SOME OTHER MAN HAVING A MIDLIFE CRISIS, THEN BOUGHT THE FOUR EXACT SAME SUITS IN DIFFERENT COLOURS FROM TOPMAN. THEN I GOT MY HAIR AS FLAT AS IT CAN GO AND I THOUGHT, ‘THAT’S IT: THIS IS ME NOW’.” In fact, Russell can pinpoint the exact moment when he needed to alter his outlook and write a new show. It started with somebody at the door ... “I’m always looking for the moment that can make me look ridiculous in a way that is compelling. I was in the middle of spray-tanning myself upstairs in these tiny pants when the doorbell went. I went downstairs in my dressing gown and this window cleaner was touting for work. He leaned in and said, ‘I’m really sorry to disturb you: is your mum or dad in at all?’ Initially you might have thought this was a compliment, but it’s really not. He could be talking about how I’m putting myself across so I thought: ‘clothes in the bin’. And at that moment, there was Right Man, Wrong Age.”

12

www.rochdalestyle.com

In the world of stand-up, acts are continually expected to evolve and grow and turn over a significant amount of material every one or two years. For some this burden might prove too much, but for Russell Kane this is a challenge he relishes. “I’ll keep changing, and I don’t really ever want to stand still. I don’t care if it confuses people about where I’m coming from. I’m protean; I don’t want to be recognisable in five years’ time; that’s what keeps my writing going. One day I’m learning Spanish, the next I’m learning survivalism. I might do my maths GCSE next week: who knows?”. For now, though, Russell is focused on making Right Man, Wrong Age the best show it can possibly be. His topic this time around is how we never quite feel the lifestage that we’re in and the age that we’re at, whether we’re 80 or 18. “When you’re 18, you look in the mirror and think ‘I know what I want to do, so why am I trapped in this 18-year-old body?’ while the 80-yearold is still waltzing and dancing around in her head. That’s going to be my jumping off point and from there I’ll do lots of accessible observations as well as the odd thinky bit. But I don’t want to disappear up my own bum with this show, I just want to go on in my suit, like Michael McIntyre or Peter Kay, and just be funny and have lots of big laughs. My only job in life is to be funny.” Inevitably, his new fatherhood status will have to be addressed in his show. As ever with Russell, he’ll work hard to avoid easy clichés and tired stereotypes as he tackles a subject that has been raised on many a stage by several generations of comedians. “It’s so hack to talk about having babies that I need to find another way in. It’s like walking into Pret at 5pm and there’s one boiled egg left: that’s what’s left to say about childbirth. But when you’re coming at it from a male point of view, you need to find a way in. I’ve never heard a man talk about caesarean section, so that might be the way to go.” If you’ve seen Russell on stage, you’ll know there is a physicality to his act which matches the blizzard of ideas and words. So, how does he wind down after a show? “Nothing exotic, just a glass of red wine. I

would like to get to bed earlier, but I need a good movie or, if I’m feeling particularly tired, something like Towie or Take Me Out; something that lobotomises me. I’m always reading good stuff, but now and again you need a burger because you can’t live on quinoa all the time. So I need something mega mainstream to bring me down.”

Normally in the run-up to a touring show, Russell will have almost a month of preview gigs under his belt. This time around, he had to ditch most of those plans to film a forthcoming BBC series, Stupid Man, Smart Phone, for which he jetted off to various inhospitable parts of the world (the Arctic Circle, North Africa

and Costa Rica among them) to see if he could survive purely with the aid of a constantly fully-charged mobile device with a permanent Wi-Fi connection. This is another example of a man who constantly wants to stretch himself, both physically and intellectually, whether it’s going on to Radio 4’s Saturday Review alongside AS Byatt to discuss the new Julian Barnes novel or writing his own next literary work. In 2012, two years after he won the Edinburgh Comedy Award, Russell published The Humorist, the tale of a tormented comedy critic who discovers

the secret blueprint for humour, and he is continually working away on future literary projects. Kane also has ambitions to tap into the online market with his stand-up. “I’ve not really seen other stand-ups doing it; I’ve seen some using their social media and doing bits of sketches but I haven’t seen many take the risk of doing stand-up down the barrel of a camera, posting it and seeing what happens. I did a thing recently, which I called The Kaneing, where I looked at a celebrity news story and put it on my Facebook wall. I was worried it might seem a bit embarrassing and desperate, but it got 64,000 views overnight.” The popularity of Russell Kane is in little doubt, but he’s keen to make the most of his time at the top of the British stand-up tree. His sense of gratitude for the job he’s doing is palpable and he confesses that touring the country and making people laugh is something he will never tire of. “I love it. If I ever have a bad day and feel miserable, I think about the things my family have done for a living. The fact that I can walk into a hotel, lie on the bed, watch a scifi movie, go and do an hour’s work on stage is incredible.”

SAMUEL BAMFORD

MIDDLETON'S RADICAL HERO IF YOU WALK UP TO THE GRAVEYARD ALONGSIDE MIDDLETON PARISH CHURCH (ST LEONARD'S) YOU WILL SOON SEE AN OBELISK STANDING ON THREE STEPS AND OVER 25 FOOT HIGH. THIS MONUMENT OF MILLSTONE GRIT IS A MEMORIAL TO SAMUEL BAMFORD, PERHAPS MIDDLETON'S MOST FAMOUS SON (SORRY STEVE COOGAN!).

Samuel Bamford (1788-1872) was one of the most important people in the campaign to reform Parliament and seek universal suffrage. Politics is not normally featured in Style Magazine, but it is worth remembering that the fight for the right to vote for one's M.P. was a long and difficult struggle. Votes for women took even longer to become law; watch the recent Meryl Streep film, ‘Suffragette’, if you are interested.

Samuel's father, Daniel, was a cotton spinner, but later

1911, and is still in remarkably good condition.

After Samuel left school, he trained as a weaver, although he soon became a warehouseman and then a seaman on a ship that carried coal from South Shields to London. Clearly a restless man, Samuel soon deserted the ship in London and returned to Middleton, walking most of the 200 mile route, occasionally having a welcome lift on a horse-drawn cart. Remember this was before the railways were built! This extraordinary journey is related in his Early Days book and makes fascinating reading as he goes from town to town, avoiding the Navy's press gangs. Samuel's writing style feels very modern to me; it is simple and very readable, unlike so many of those 19th century novels that you may have had to read!

In 1812 Bamford married Jemima Shepherd and she soon gave birth to their child Anne. In 1819 Samuel attended the meeting in Manchester that was to become known as the Peterloo Massacre when members of the local militia attacked and killed demonstrators. The Middleton contingent assembled at 69, Morton Street in Middleton before walking to Manchester via Blackley and Harpurhey. There is a blue plaque on the side wall to mark this event. Bamford describes that day in great detail in the Early Days book. Samuel was arrested soon after Peterloo and sentenced to a year in Lincoln Castle gaol. After his release, Samuel resumed his work as a weaver and went to live in Stakehill between Slattocks and Middleton. After living there for four years, the family moved to the centre of Middleton, first in Long Street and later in Union Street. This house was demolished in the early 1960's but a memorial garden marks the spot where Samuel lived.

readings. Samuel passed away in 1872 at the grand age of 84 years old and his funeral was attended by literally hundreds of people who crowded into St Leonard's Church. Middleton is justifiably proud of their famous son. It is significant that the public paid for the memorial to recognise his life and work. As well as the fine obelisk in the graveyard, there is, nearby, the family grave where Samuel was buried alongside his wife and his daughter who both pre-deceased him. If you are interested in finding out more about Samuel Bamford and what Middleton was like during his life, I strongly recommend that you pick up a copy of the Sam Bamford Trail booklet from either Middleton Library or Touchstones. It takes you on a fascinating tour of old Middleton, showing you less well known parts of the town. You will walk the streets that Samuel trod upon and pick some of the atmosphere of the times. Upstairs in the local studies section of the library in Middleton is a fine collection of books both by and about Samuel Bamford , as well as a replica of one of the banners that the Middleton contingent carried to Peterloo nearly 200 years ago. Well worth a visit. Richard Lysons Further Reading: Early Days by Samuel Bamford Passages In The Life Of A Radical by Samuel Bamford Samuel Bamford by Morris Garratt Sam Bamford Trail - booklet

In 1826 Samuel left weaving to become a Manchester correspondent for the Morning Herald, but moved from journalism to concentrate on his autobiographical writing. First he wrote Passages In The Life Of A Radical and, some years later, Early Days. Samuel also wrote poetry; a walking guide and Lancashire dialect material. At the beginning of the 1850's Samuel moved to London to work as a messenger at Somerset House, but had returned to Manchester before the end of the decade. By now Samuel was making a living as an author, often giving public

BATTLE OF THE COMPACT EXECUTIVES

One of the most hotly-contested segments in the car market today is within the compact executive market. Ever since VW first put a pretty dress on the golf and called it an Audi A3 back in 1996, the other premium marques have been playing catch up. The question is though, after twenty years does the A3 still lead the pack?

AUDI A3

It’s twenty years since the original was launched and we are now on the third incarnation of the A3. This latest model, launched in 2014 and as well as the original hatchback design, the A3 can now be ordered as either a traditional hatchback, sportback, 4-door saloon or cabriolet. There is also a wide range of power options to choose from, but ignoring the turbo charged 306-bhp S3 we all secretly want, the big sellers will be the 1.0-litre, turbo-charged 115bhp petrol unit or the 1.6-litre 109bhp diesel units that power the entry models. Concentrating on the diesel option, as this will be the big seller, especially to those with company car tax to consider, the feeling from the driver’s seat is that, thanks to the torque produced, it doesn’t feel as weedy as the figures 24

www.rochdalestyle.com

would have you believe. Acceleration is brisk and it sits happily and most important quietly in the outside lane of the motorway. The cabin, as one would expect from a premium brand, is comfortable and presented nicely. I’m not sure I’m a fan of multimedia screen which rises from the dashboard and provides access to all the major controls, but it is at eye level which means that more time can be spent looking at the road rather than down into the abyss. As VW have steadily moved upmarket over the years then the sense of Audi attracting a premium has diminished slightly, but I would still order an A3 over the Golf on looks alone, as even after 20-years, the A3 still has a visual presence that others in this segment find hard to match.

BMW 1-SERIES

It took nearly eight years after the A3 was launched for BMW to get their competitor, the 1-series to market, the BMW 3-series compact initially filled the hap but was never a popular car in its own right, seen as the ugly duckling of the ranch at the time. The 1-series however has gone from strength to strength and has stayed true to the BMW ethos by sticking with rear-wheeldrive. As with the Audi, there is a myriad of engines to choose from but as with the Audi, it’s the more frugal, less polluting models that will be the big sellers due to the way tax is calculated on company cars. The 1.5-litre, three-cylinder, 115bhp diesel option trumps its Audi competitor by slipping under the magic 100g CO2/km mark and thus reducing any potential tax bills, but the

MERCEDES A-CLASS

drawback, as always in my view with three pot engines, is they feel much more unrefined and seem much more frantic at higher speeds. That said the interior of the 1-series feels much plusher than that of the Audi. Most of the major functions are controlled by the now-familiar i-drive system which is commanded using what looks like a miniature upturned pie dish on the centre console. Although the looks have never grown on me, nor developed with each passing generation, the 1-series, for my money is the best driving car in the segment. As is always the case when drive comes from the rear wheels, there is a sense of being propelled rather than pulled and this changes the balance of the car when entering or leaving tight corners. Admittedly, most of these cars will spend their lives on Aroads or motorways, and in these environments the 1-series is perfectly capable, but for the keen driver, it’s always nice to be able to have some fun once the going gets twisty.

The new A-class reminds me of one of those soap characters who disappears one day as a gawky kid and re-emerges a few years later looking like a modelcome-pop star. Indeed, the A-class is the Nick Tilsley of the motoring world.

Ignoring the old model, which bears no relation other than the name to the car now bearing the name, this latest incarnation is a sign that the threepronged star of Mercedes has moved on from its wilderness years and is once again a contender in the premium sector. The choice model will once again be the greenest, and fulfilling the demand is the 1.5-litre 109bhp A180 which also slips under the afore-mentioned 100g

CO2/km mark that the taxman dreads. It is also the most refined of the three mentioned here, indeed when driving you find yourself occasionally coming across the red line on the rev counter, not to seek out extra performance, but because the interior is so quiet.

Inside, the Merc feels the most luxurious of the trio with plenty of design cues employed from the larger, more expensive models and the use of soft feel materials on the dash add a premium feel. Out on the road, it is as accomplished as both its rivals, but the wider and slightly lower stance of the A-Class gives the car a sportier feel to that of its rivals. on Hats

Autumn Trend Spoight Have you ever stood in front of your mirror all dressed up while experiencing a sensation that your beautiful, flattering and fashionable outfit is somehow incomplete? The solution could be that you need to invest in a hat; a piece of cranial frippery that provides the icing on the cake, if you will. The hat, be it trilby, bowler, beret or beanie, once situated on your head has the power to propel your assemblage from ‘nice’ to ‘wow’. Luckily, Style is here to guide you through the multitude of head-coverings available this season, and where and when is best to don them. TRILBY The trilby can be lauded as the ultimate transseasonal hat. It looks just as good adding an edge to your festival shorts and t-shirt as it does with jeans and a wax jacket when the temperature cools. Choosing feather, bow or flower detailing can lend the trilby a jaunty or girly touch, making it ideal for day-to-night occasions, while a ribbon trim adds a splash of colour which can tie in with the rest of your outfit. The fabric is also key; opting for a crisp felt material adds a more formal touch to an ensemble and looks great paired with a heavier blazer or trench coat. Opting for a neutral colour, such as perennial fashion favourite camel or soft grey creates a more sophisticated look, while a sassy leopard print will add a pop to an otherwise simple jeans and shirt combo. A woven tweed material connotes country chic with a hint of masculinity while lighter lace fabrics offer a feminine twist on a style classic.

BERETS The hat which is ubiquitous with French style and therefore universally in vogue. Berets add a hint of bohemian artist to your ensemble, and when paired with pretty midi skirts and polo necks provide a fail-safe look for anything from the school run to a hot date and everything in between. Mix it up with textures and colours for day and night, pair with bouncy curls for a more fun and playful look or tilt to the side for a more authentic take on the Parisian chapeau of choice.

CLOCHE A vintage 1940s inspired cloche hat adds the perfect ladylike finish to a wintery ensemble. The cloche looks fabulous in deep, rich autumnal shades such as burgundy, moss green and navy paired with tea dresses or pencil skirts and a sheer blouse to add a little extra je ne sais quoi to your look with minimal effort, which translates from office to party or shopping to drinks. The classic silhouette can be finished off with loose retro waves and red lips to create a timeless and versatile aspect.

Why the title Kandyman? Well that would be giving too much away – but there is a clue in the title. You’ve published four books so far – do you think you might one day run out of ideas? I hope not. I have plenty more to offer. I have just completed a fifth book and have also written a collection of short stories. Oh and I mustn’t forget, a children’s book too. Any clues as to what might be in store? I’m keeping the fifth book under wraps for now but I can say my short stories offer something for everyone. I keep adding new ones to the collection - so far there are sixteen. All are unique and vary in content. I have a particular fondness for short stories – one a day or as a bedtime read can be just the tonic needed.

RETIRED ROCHDALE FIREFIGHTER PENS HIS FOURTH NOVEL

Does writing get any easier with experience? No, I try and set the bar higher to give myself new challenges. In the early days my writing was a little raw – some people might say it still is. Not always a bad thing, this particular style can provide a gritty storyline.

Rochdale born author Graham Ashworth has recently released his fourth novel,

Who inspired you to try your hand at writing? I’ve always loved to read and I suppose my favourite book is ‘A Kestrel for a Knave’ by Barry Hines. This along with the subsequent film ‘Kes’, go to highlight my love of down to earth stories.

Kandyman. Teaming up with Lock Publishing, sees the retired firefighter and the South Wales publisher combine once more. As with his previous books, Kandyman is initially set locally. Graham commented: “Where else other than Rochdale would you see the word ‘cruckle’ in the pages of a work of fiction! Staying true to my roots is essential; although Kandyman does see my main character Alex Dawson, embark on worldwide quest to get to the bottom of a twenty year old mystery”.

Where would you like to see yourself in five years’ time? I’d love to have written something for television or see one of my books dramatized – probably more hope than expectation but we are all entitled to dream!

KANDYMAN, along with all of Graham’s

books can be bought online in paperback or ebook versions. Why not visit

Graham’s author page at Amazon UK books. Kandyman paperback £7.99 / Kindle £2.99. 40

ROCHDALE RSPCA NEWS & EVENTS I’m Sheila & I’m looking for a new loving home

RSPCA Rochdale & District Branch Registered Charity no. 232257

Most people are aware of the work of the RSPCA’s Inspectors and Animal Welfare Officers who attend incidents and rescues and are there to protect the most abused and cruelly treated animals. You may also be aware of the campaigning work of the RSPCA such as the current situation with the culling of badgers, which the RSPCA does not support because it involves great cruelty and there is strong evidence supporting vaccination as an alternative. The RSPCA can provide advice and support to help people deal with often distressing situations by calling the RSPCA’s national call centre on 0300 1234 999, where incidents can be logged and help or advice given. However, of equal importance is the work of the RSPCA’s branch network. If a branch is lucky enough to have an Animal Centre, which we are here in Rochdale, we have somewhere that people can go to for help or advice. The Rochdale Animal Centre can hold more than 100 animals, which have been taken in from the inspectors for assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and finally rehoming. You can visit the centre during opening hours everyday except Wednesday. ANIMALS FOR ADOPTION When Charlie the Staffy arrived at the centre he was skin and bone, weighing 8kg (half the weight he should have been). He was covered in pressure sores and didn't know his name!

I’m Sally & I’m looking for a loving home

I'm Honey Please adopt me or one of my friends

I’m Thomas Please adopt me

You may have read about Sally’s terrifying ordeal in the local press. This gorgeous saluki (named Sally by the staff) was thrown over a 7.5ft fence into the yard at Rochdale animal centre. She has recently had puppies and is still producing milk. Can you help find who did this to her? Can you help to trace her puppies? She is a lovely dog and is now being cared for by the RSPCA, who are obviously concerned for her welfare of her puppies. I’m Charlie... This is me before (left) but now I'm happy, healthy (right) & ready to be adopted!

He is now fully recovered and is looking for a home - that special family who will love him always. Poor Sheila hasn't had the best start in life; she had been living rough and a kind lady had been feeding her. The lady rang and asked the RSPCA for advice when she realised that the cat was pregnant. Fortunately, there was a space at the animal centre so the RSPCA offered to take her (where she was named after the lovely lady who found her). After she had her kittens, the staff noticed Sheila was showing signs of discomfort near her hips. X-rays showed signs of an old injury, possibly a fracture that had healed on its own. She was put on pain relief and after several weeks Sheila is now well enough to be put up for adoption. Could you offer this stunning girl the loving forever home she deserves? Thomas and Honey are a middle aged couple looking for a loving home together after their owner sadly passed away.

More information on these, and many more animals who need homes, can be found at: www.rspca-rochdale.org.uk. If you feel you could help please visit the Animal Centre where the staff will be happy to show you around. HOW YOU CAN HELP SUPPORT THE RSPCA’S WORK You can volunteer at the animal centre, in charity shops, run your own fundraising events or help at an RSPCA event. Check the Facebook pages for more information, RSPCA Rochdale Animal Centre and the new RSPCA Rochdale Shops and Ebay which is a separate page advertising items for sale and where you can keep up to date with news and events.

came along to help; electricians, plumbers,

THE TRUTH BEHIND THE FIZZ SPARKLING WINE SALES IN THE UK HAVE INCREASED IN VOLUME BY 80% OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS, ACCORDING TO ACCOUNTANCY GROUP UHY HACKER YOUNG. THAT’S THE EQUIVALENT OF 191 MILLION BOTTLES IN THE 12 MONTHS ENDING IN MAY 2016. SO WHAT ARE WE, IN THE UK, ACTUALLY DRINKING?

M

uch of the increase is down to higher demand for Prosecco, although Champagne, Cava and English sparkling wine have all played their part. So I thought I would help to demystify the differences. Put very simply, Prosecco is Italian, Cava is Spanish, Champagne is French, and English sparkling, is …well… English. In style, Prosecco is usually easy drinking, with tasting notes around pear drops, and the fizz is usually less demanding than the others. All of which make it very drinkable, at any occasion, and its slightly sweeter profile makes it approachable for everyone. Definitely a winner for any party… or frankly, just an evening in. Cava has a closer method of production to champagne production, so the end result is closer to a champagne than a prosecco. However to drink, it is more medium bodied than light, and dryer than a typical prosecco. This makes it the best option if you wanted champagne, but the budget isn’t stretching that far. 54

www.rochdalestyle.com

Champagne is expensive, made so by its very nature and longevity, along with a heritage that any brand marketer envies. The production is expensive - the land the grapes grow on is astronomical, around £300,000 for an acre, compared to British agricultural land at around £8-10k acre. The drink in itself can be austere, very dry, but also highly complex and delicious. The note to look for to spot a truly fabulous champagne is the brioche / toast notes, best detected on the aroma. Last, but certainly not least, our very own home grown English sparkling wines are winning awards, beating Champagne. The best vineyards in Sussex have the same chalky band of rock that lies beneath Champagne, which is credited for one of the reasons behind the quality of the grapes. Along with a little help from good old climate change. But which to choose, for which reasons? Every day, easy drinking aperitif, to suit all people and all pockets, it has to be Prosecco. For drinking with food, for a party, but on a budget, it has to be Cava.

For the brand conscious, who spare no expense then Champagne is the choice. For something a little different, supporting British innovation and to try out the new, the English sparkling wine would be the one to choose. Jo Burnett Style’s Wine Expert

DRESSED TO IMPRESS The 12th annual ‘Ascot at Nutters’ event, in support of the NSPCC, saw ladies once again dressing to impress as if they were at Ascot for the races. Organised by The Rotary Club of Rochdale, the event raised £4,000 for the NSPCC Childline service. Fisherfield Childcare, who support the event, presented NSPCC Community Appeals Manager Debbie Sefton with a cheque for over £11,000 which they had raised during the year.

This donation means Fisherfield has now raised over £50,000 for the NSPCC. During the event guests were treated to a cocktail reception before sitting down to a three course meal prepared by Chef Andrew Nutter. As well as the sumptuous meal, guests enjoyed live coverage of the races at Ascot and took part in a raffle and best hat competition, whilst enjoying the ambience of Nutters Restaurant.

ROCHDALE News & Events With summer drawing to a close, Springhill Hospice’s fundraising team have been taking stock of the last four months of fundraising. “With daily costs of £8,200 to keep the Hospice up and running, our small fundraising department is always busy, but never too busy to reflect on the fabulous support we receive every day”, said Fundraising Manager, Lillie Winterbottom.

and those who are young at heart, to meet the big man himself – Father Christmas. 10am until 3pm, Sunday 20th November at Springhill Hospice. With free ‘park and ride’ from Gordon Rigg Garden Centre, Kingsway, it’s a wonderful opportunity to come and see what all the fuss is about.

“We are grateful to everyone who has given their time, effort and money to allow our doctors and nurses to care for the people from the community”, Lillie added. Over the last few months the fundraising success stories include the annual Woman of Rochdale Luncheon, that saw speaker Tricia Stewart - the original Woman’s Institute Calendar Girl - entertaining hundreds of frocked and fascinator adorned ladies, including last year’s WOMAN OF ROCHDALE, Joan Davies, who handed over her mantel to this year’s title winner, Margaret Hopkinson.

The SUMMER FAIR at Rochdale Riding Club transformed open fields into a fantastic fair with the added attraction of a huge DOG SHOW. Canines and their owners from miles around descended on Roch Valley Way, enjoying the sunshine and a sensational family and doggy day out. Talking of animal supporters, SPRINGY’S MOONLIT SPRINT OR STROLL enjoyed another successful year, with 10k walkers, hoppers and runners raising thousands of pounds. And for those who prefer a quieter, less strenuous way of supporting the Hospice, this year’s SUMMER SERENADE in July and the Open Garden Day in August, raised their fair share of funds, swelling the Hospice coffers by £3,500 between them.

This year’s MEN OF ROCHDALE LUNCHEON takes place on Friday 25th November in the surroundings of Rochdale’s beautiful town hall. The reigning Man of Rochdale, Andrew Nutter will be passing on the honour to another deserving winner. Fancy coming along and/or nominating a deserving gentlemen you know? Visit the Hospice website www.springhill.org.uk/manofrochdale-2016 Springhill’s final fundraising offering of 2016 is the phenomenal spectacle that is the SANTA DASH OR DAWDLE. Last year over 600 red clad supporters from every walk of life, dashed, but mainly dawdled, around Hollingworth Lake, raising over £18,000 for Hospice funds. To add to this year’s sensational Santa sight, and for the chance to enjoy a fabulous morning of fresh air or family time, join us this year on Sunday 11th December at 11 am, setting off from Hollingworth Lake Visitors Centre. Sign-up online by visiting www.springhill.org.uk/santadash-2016 and be Santa Cl-awesome for Springhill!

It has been a successful fundraising summer all round but the need to raise money for the Hospice never stops. On Sunday 20th November the Hospice will hosts its now legendary CHRISTMAS FAIR. Festive gifts, food, entertainment and a special visit from Santa will make for a fabulous start to the run up to Christmas. Over 40 stalls offer a mix of gifts and raffles, homemade festive refreshments and tombolas, games and entertainment. And of course, it is a fabulous chance for youngsters, SPRINGHILL HOSPICE, BROAD LANE, ROCHDALE, OL16 4PZ. COMMUNITY NEWS EUROPE’S LARGEST CAR CARE COMPANY OPENS NEW £1M TOWN CENTRE HEADQUARTERS

Tetrosyl Group, whose head office and manufacturing sites were previously in Bury, has recently moved into Newgate House in Rochdale Town Centre. Tetrosyl Group, whose head office and manufacturing sites were previously in Bury, has recently moved into Newgate House in Rochdale Town Centre. The firm, whose brands include T-Cut, CarPlan and Bluecol, bring 130 staff to the town centre, to work in their £1 million headquarters and Tetrosyl bosses say they will look to recruit

Rochdale residents wherever possible. The seven-storey building on Newgate will play host to customers from as far afield as Australia, China, Thailand and America, and includes product showrooms and a classic racing car exhibition area. Council leader Richard Farnell said: “Having a well-respected multi-national company relocating

to Rochdale is a great coup for the borough and cements our reputation as a great place to do business. Regeneration experts say that every new person coming into a borough puts about £1,200 a year into the local economy by spending in local businesses. This investment, as well as new jobs for local people, is worth shouting about.”
