Tour de France More than ten thousand people walked, cycled and camped overnight to be sure of a place to watch the Tour de France as it raced through Littleborough. The race sped along the B6138 from Cragg Vale as it turned onto the A58 close to the Blackstone edge reservoir towards Ripponden. The caravan and riders were given a fantastic reception by the crowd in the July sunshine. Style Magazine captured the event next to ITV link man Ralph Blunsom as the worlds media focused on the event. It was a truly amazing event and those who couldn’t get up to Blackstone edge were able to watch it on the big screen in Hare Hill Park.

Message from the editor
JOIN ROCHDALE STYLE FOR OUR TEN YEAR CELEBRATIONS! Charity Ball in aid of Springhill Hospic e and MNDA
September is here, as we publish our autumn magazine, after a hectic summer of activity in the town.
July saw thousands of people at the top of Blackstone edge as the Tour de France raced its way past the reservoir and down into Ripponden. The sun was shining as the crowds made a day of it, some camping overnight. The team at Style had a fantastic day out, as the world had a peek at the beautiful countryside we have bordering the town.
With autumn approaching, the focus is now on the second Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival, taking place over the weekend of the 24th - 26th October. Full details of the exciting programme can be found with this edition and online at www.rochdaleliteraturefestival.co.uk.
This edition is packed with exclusive celebrity interviews including Coronation Street’s Jane Danson, BBC presenter Bill Turnbull and popular singersongwriter Lucy Spraggan, plus all the usual features including motoring, dining, fashion, beauty, local history, community events, competitions and much more.
2014 marks ten years of Rochdale Style Magazine and we offer our sincere thanks to the local businesses who have supported our family-run publication since day one.

Sadly the weather wasn’t as kind in August, as the Feel Good Festival took over the town centre, but the crowd was still buzzing. The celebrity chefs cooked up a treat in the kitchen as residents got onstage to try their culinary skills and the headline act Scouting For Girls attracted large crowds in the evening, the rain failing to dampen their spirits.

STYLE EXCLUSIVE CORONATION STREET’S
JANE DANSON Coronation Street star Jane Danson will be amongst the headline shows at this autumn’s Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival.

www.rochdalestyle.com
The 35 year old actress, best known for playing Leanne Battersby in the ITV1 soap will be hosting a workshop at the festival in October, showing budding young actors and actresses how to develop their acting skills, along with techniques and tips for performing on stage and screen. For those who manage to get a ticket, it promises to be a real masterclass - Jane won a coveted British Soap Award in 2011 for ‘Best Dramatic Performance’. She’ll also be talking candidly about her life and television career at the arts extravaganza during a live interview. In Coronation Street, her controversial Battersby family were dubbed the ‘neighbours from hell’ and made an immediate impact on the long-running show's loyal audience. Danson has been centre stage in a series of harrowing and dramatic storylines ever since!

THE NIGHT THE ROLLING STONES ALMOST PLAYED ROCHDALE!
In the early 1960’s pop groups played an endless series of ‘one-nighters’ at clubs, theatres, cinemas and concert halls around Britain. Large indoor arenas were uncommon, the most important being Wembley Empire Pool in London (now known as Wembley Arena). In April 1964 the Stones’ latest single,

BILL TURNBULL Journalist and presenter, Bill Turnbull, best known for presenting BBC1 Breakfast is one of the UK’s most famous faces, having also appeared on programmes such as ‘The One Show’, ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, ‘Children in Need’, ‘Celebrity Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ and ‘Doctor Who’. Last year he joined ‘Songs of Praise’ and appeared on comedy panel show ‘Would I Lie to You?’, but it’s perhaps for being on the sofa in the mornings as BBC Breakfast anchorman that he is best known.
16
www.rochdalestyle.com
Away from the small screen, he’s a well-known bee-keeping enthusiast and has written two enlightening books on the subject, including the imaginatively titled ‘The Bad Beekeepers Club: How I stumbled into the curious world of bees - and became (perhaps) a better person’. Bill also answered questions on bee-keeping on ‘Celebrity Mastermind’ and has presented the Queen with a jar of his own homemade honey! On Sunday 26th October he’ll be talking about his love of bee-keeping and his life in front of the camera at Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival. He’s set to reveal what it’s like to cover breaking world news including New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and King's Cross Station following the 7/7 London bombings. Bill has also promised to include stories from his interviews with some of the biggest stars in showbusiness. Style caught up with Bill to discuss his exciting career, those early morning wake up calls and life as a busy beekeeper! How did you first get into journalism? I started writing for the student newspaper at Edinburgh in my first year, and went on to edit it in my second. After a postgraduate diploma in journalism studies, my first job was with Radio Clyde in Glasgow - 36 years ago!
What has been the highlight of your career so far? Being part of the team that turned Breakfast around and made it the most watched programme in the morning is what I'm most proud of. …And your most challenging interview or event? Reporting after a disaster is never easy, as emotions run very high. I did once have to broadcast live about the death of someone I knew, which was particularly difficult. Who have you most enjoyed meeting? Talking to people whose work I admire is a real bonus of my job. Film stars come and go, but Will Smith and Will Ferrell stand out as great interviewees. I'm a big Elbow fan, so meeting Guy Garvey was a joy. Getting to deliver a lecture for the Queen probably tops the list. You’ve reported from locations all over the world, but where has been your favourite place to visit? I went to Haiti several times twenty years ago. It's a little piece of Africa in the western hemisphere - bright, colourful and desperately poor. Yet somehow its people survive disaster after disaster. Best & worst aspects of your job? Getting up at 0335 has got to be the worst part of it. I set two alarms, but you never get used to it. Knowing that more than seven million people a day tune in at some point to watch us makes it all worthwhile. How do you look wide awake on BBC Breakfast at 6am? I do at least 10 minutes of yoga before I leave the house in the morning, which gets the blood flowing. I'm also rigorous about going to bed early, and not drinking on work days. You moved up to the Peak District from London a couple of years ago… what’s the best thing about living up North? The beer, the scenery, and the people - not necessarily in that order! Living up here has been a real discovery. I particularly enjoyed the chips and gravy at Spotland...
What made you take up the unusual hobby of beekeeping? A swarm landed in our garden many years ago. I watched as a beekeeper calmly took them away, and wondered if I had what it takes to work as one with the bees. I'm still waiting for the answer. Why are bees so important and what can the general public do to help the declining bee population? Bees are important pollinators. They help to provide us with much of the food we eat. People can do their bit by growing beefriendly plants in their gardens - even a flower box may do some good; and by being aware of what's happening to them. Did the Queen give you any feedback on your homemade honey? No! But I hope she liked it. Any advice for aspiring journalists or presenters? Get a job in the business - any job. There's no substitute for experience. If you're any good, you won't be there long. One way or another, talent always rises to the top. Ruth Meredith

Rochdale Hornets the Pride of Rochdale
There has been a lot of talk recently about Rochdale’s heritage and how we should celebrate it as a way of regenerating the town. Rochdale Hornets, our local professional Rugby League Club has been quietly doing just that, celebrating its heritage as a way of building for the future.

and the first ever player to score a hat-trick for
the British Lions.

public school based players and management, to
the point were Nolan was threatened with having
expenses deducted for ‘off field behavior’.
The treatment of Nolan and some of the
other northern based working class players would
have a huge bearing on events just seven years
later.
In 1895, Rochdale Hornets, along with 21
other clubs, took the immensely brave decision to
break away from the Rugby Union and form their

Rochdale and the towns surrounding it set up
what is now Rugby League. Rugby League is

both the soccer club and Hornets suffering severe

both clubs one of them must sell their ground and

The three day festival will feature the soulful singer-songwriter who shot to fame after making it to the live shows of ITV1’s ‘The X Factor’ in 2012. Spraggan’s memorable performance of her own song ‘Tea and Toast’, received a standing ovation and over 28 million views on YouTube. She was forced to quit the series midway through the live shows after falling ill but had already made her mark and in 2013 had two top 40 singles – ‘Lighthouse’ and ‘Last Night.’ 22 year old Lucy, who describes her music as a mixture of acoustic, folk and hip-hop, has received rave reviews for her live shows and last year completed a sell out UK tour. She will be appearing in Rochdale on Saturday 25 October. As well as performing a live set, she’ll be

FUELING THE DEBATE If you have endured more than five minutes of the national news lately you will have noticed that the first shots are now being fired between the politicians as we run up to next year’s general election. High on the list of points to be debated will be the increase in the cost of living. For most of us, the cost of fuel takes a significant chunk of our monthly income. There are plenty of lobbyists who would prefer we use public transport, walk or cycle instead of the car but if you have a full Friday night shop then it’s really not possible to load a hundred pounds worth of comestibles onto the back of a mountain bike.
So the question is how can you maximise every drop of extortionately-priced fuel? Hybrid solutions such as the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight are now commonplace and expanding across model ranges but there are some other alternatives available.
FIAT 500 1.3 MULTIJET Most commentators have been so busy lauding the two-cylinder Multi-Air petrol engine that they haven’t noticed one small thing, it officially gives less MPG than its diesel stable mate. Whilst the two-cylinder petrol engine is terrific for buzzing around the congested streets of Rome and Milan, it just doesn’t cut the mustard once hills or motorways enter the equation. The diesel has more power lower down the rev range than its petrol counterpart which needs revving to produce the same lively performance. Whilst the FIAT’s roots are planted in the city, a trip out into the countryside can raise quite a smile if pushed on enough. People often ask me how highly I rate the 500. Well, a couple of weekends ago I spent some in time in our local dealer helping my mother spec up her second brand-new cinquecento. 28

NISSAN LEAF At one time, electric technology in vehicles was confined to Milk Floats and Dodgems, but although Tesla will claim to be the first full scale manufacturer of an electric car, it is Nissan that will be the first to bring the technology to the mass market. The Nissan Leaf, propelled by an 80kW motor, is good for a top speed of nearly 90mph but the main consideration is the range. The lithium-ion batteries can last around 100 miles between full charges, although the good news is that a 75% charge can be done in around 30 minutes at a quick charge point, the likes of which are likely to pop up around the country in the next few years.
The Leaf no longer has the electric car market to itself with plug-in variants for the Ford Focus and VW Golf now also on sale but with prices significantly higher than the Nissan, its still the Leaf that is the car to beat in this segment.
FOR EVERYONE ELSE… A new micro industry is popping up around the country at the moment producing BioDiesel. What these companies do is take the vegetable oil from chippies and refine it into a fuel suitable for most diesel engines. I am told that oil used to fry Onion Bhajis makes the most potent fuel! Priced, as I write, at around £1.20 per litre, it represents a significant saving over the
price at the conventional pump and most engines will require no alterations. What you will need though when starting to use bio-diesel is a new fuel filter after around three tank fills. This is because it actually cleans the engine by removing carbon deposits which improves lubrication. This shouldn’t cost more than around £50 at a local garage however. You can find your local supplier using Google who will be able to give you more information on your vehicles compatibility with Bio-Diesel. Mark D’Apice Motoring Expert

Autumn
2014
Fashion Report There is one key word when it comes to fashion in the autumn months – layers! With temperatures dropping, adding a fine-knit cardigan or trench coat over your outfit ensures you stay warm (and dry!) as summer segues into cooler, darker and wetter autumn. Here are the essential looks that will keep you in style this season… A good way of keeping your hair looking fresh is to go for the look of the moment with your hair colour – ombre. This is a really effortless, low-maintenance style which can be as striking or as natural as you want, and involves the ends of your hair being lightened, gradually fading into your natural, darker colour at the root. Countless celebrities are working the ombre trend at the moment, including Fearne Cotton, the Kardashians, Sarah Jessica Parker and Rihanna, proving that this is a hairstyle that can work for every skin tone and age group.
Burberry Prorsum Womenswear Autumn Winter 2014 Collection
A major trend for this year is vintage 60s style. This was seen on the catwalks at Louis Vuitton, Valentino and Gucci, with shift dresses layered under shearling jackets, and bold geometric printed A-line skirts and structured box handbags being the standout pieces to purchase. The trick to keeping the look current rather than too ‘fancy dress’ is to keep hair and makeup simple rather than adopt the 60s look from head to toe - a slick of red lipstick always looks great and adds a pop of colour to your face without overpowering your outfit.
The 90s-influenced sport-luxe trend which dominated the high street this summer also continued to shine on the catwalks, with models walking the runway in brightly coloured trainers paired with dresses and fur coats, demonstrating that we should be having a little fun with our fashion and that if you’ve got the nerve, anything goes. And I think that the best thing about following the trainers trend is that they are super comfortable too – so no blisters on your shopping trip or night out. Trainers by Rainbow Club
www.ministryoffashion.co.uk
Colour-wise, pale pink appears to be the shade of the moment – as seen on coats and knitwear in stores such as Topshop and French Connection on the high street. The great thing about this trend is that it suits most skin tones and adds a softer, feminine dimension to an outfit when paired with your failsafe skinny jeans or leather trousers and – bonus - can be worn well into the spring too.
The perennial autumn-winter failsafe fabric is tartan, or check, or plaid – whatever you want to call it – there is no denying that this is the ubiquitous, classic pattern for winter. Perhaps its everlasting winter appeal is because the pattern is so versatile, being available in a multitude of colours, and looks great both dressed up with leather pencil skirts or dressed down as a cute pinafore dress or slim-fit trousers Bay City Rollers style! Velvet is another favourite fabric for dressing up in the colder months, rich and luxurious-looking, it adds a touch of old-school vintage glamour to your look and never goes out of style.
New boots are always at the top of my shopping list for autumn/winter. There is a plethora of styles to choose from on the high street, flat or heeled, with chunky biker boots, cute pixie-style ankle boots and fabulous knee high platforms – with another nod to the 60s - being my favourites this season. Boots can be layered over with tights and worn with jumper dresses as winter approaches, and will still be eminently wearable into spring – just lose the tights and add sunshine!
Statement coats and jackets are always an essential purchase in autumn to layer up and keep cosy. For the last few seasons, faux fur has been a popular choice and this continues in 2014. Faux fur also alludes to the vintage 60s trend, so you can kill two fashion birds with one stone! Blanket coats are being hailed as this season’s new trend, being both functional and stylish, will look great worn throughout winter and into spring, and look surprisingly chic when belted at the waist over chunky knits and jeans.
Burberry Autumn Winter 2014
And finally, my favourite trend this autumn has to be the bird motifs that seem to be flying around everywhere – on tops, jumpers and coats in particular. This super-cute look popped up on numerous catwalks and added a bit of quirky interest to clothing, from delicate embroidered songbirds on silk shell tops (which would look fabulous worn under a sleek cashmere cardigan) to glitzy sequin avian motifs adorning boxy 60s style jackets, this is a look that works from the office to evening effortlessly.

beauty tips
It’s that time of year again – you ate, you drank, you ran around after the kids all day and danced all night! And now the post holiday blues have kicked in and you are in serious need of a pick me up now that autumn is on its way! So here are a few easy solutions to help keep your holiday glow for a little longer... Although one of the best parts of going on holiday is getting that gorgeous tan, you don’t want to carry on exposing your skin to UV rays all year long – over exposure to the sun can cause premature aging amongst other things which no woman wants! So this means sunbeds are a big no-no! My solution? When you first arrive back from your holiday, or even whilst you’re still there, start using St Tropez Classic Tan Booster. St Tropez is royalty in the tanning industry, and it’s understandable why! This lightweight solution gives your skin the ultimate boost in colour at the same time as keeping your skin beautifully moisturised. But unfortunately, your tan won’t last forever! So as your next step, I’d recommend St Tropez’s newest tanning product, Self Tan Luxe Dry Oil – a gorgeous, easy to apply tanning oil. Apply with gloves for a streak free, natural finish. My favourite thing about this product is that the added lemongrass takes away the usual, awful false tan smell! We all over indulge on holiday – well, it’s only once a year, we’re allowed! So if you have been a little bit naughty and are struggling to fit back into that little black dress, Shrinking Violet Body Wrap is the perfect solution. Not only a fat and inch loss treatment, it will also drain all of those nasty toxins from your body and have you feeling back to normal in no time!
If you are still feeling a little down in the dumps after that, why not keep up those holiday nails for a little longer? Gelish nails don’t damage your natural nail at all as long as they are applied and removed professionally, so another application won’t do you any harm – in fact, it’s amazing how much something as simple as having your nails done can make you feel better! My favourite colours at the moment in Gelish are two blues – ‘Mali-blu Me Away’, a beautifully vibrant royal blue, and ‘My One Blue Love’, a softer baby blue – bang on trend!
And finally, it’s not too early to start thinking about next year’s trip! So if you didn’t enjoy the torture of getting hair-free on the run up to this year’s holiday, now is the perfect time to start thinking about IPL hair removal. This is a permanent method of hair removal which is totally non invasive, and it’s available for both men and women on almost any part of the body. It’s especially good for underarms and bikinis, or even those sneaky lip or chin hairs! After only 6 sessions you will be hair free - what more could a woman want? So as soon as your tan has worn off, get booked in for a consultation and a patch test at your local salon... and don’t forget, you will be jetting away again in no time!

LIFE’S COOL AT HOME
WITH THE MARTINS
As I sat down recently with Phil Cool, real name Phil Martin, at his home in beautiful rural Lancashire, it is clear he is ready to take a back seat, hang up his microphone and play the role of the traditional family man…
...Well, almost ready! Wife Beverley had prepared afternoon tea where, along with son Joe, we talked of days recording television shows such as Cool it, Cool Head, his Royal Variety performance and the long hours on the road. All can be found in his autobiography, ‘Phil Cool Stand-up Chameleon’. In the book he recalls the moment he finally arrived on the scene at Leeds Grand Theatre and amongst many other gems his meeting with Charles and Diana where a boisterous Sean Connery gave him a wink as he mocked playing the royal couple’s own personal James Bond! Phil’s rubber faced antics also saw him work with the likes of Jasper Carrott, tour with Fairport Convention and voiceovers for Spitting Image. Great testament to Phil’s facial metamorphosis came from Stephen Merchant when he wrote, “the funniest thing I’ve ever seen was Phil Cool doing an impression of an Aquaphibian.” And the gags kept on coming 42
www.rochdalestyle.com
with his take on a string of characters such as The Pope, Sylvester Stallone, Jack Nicholson and even a seahorse! So why has Phil ‘almost’ finally put his feet up? Along with son Joe he will make two appearances this autumn where they will entertain with a unique brand of comedy and music. So the talent in the family it seems is limitless as Joe can be seen performing some of his many country / folk recordings (I can highly recommend) with a mixture of Phil’s own songs. Joe also performs and records with the brilliant country band ‘Fitzwallace’, fellow band member bassist Harry Vernon tells me between private performances and festival appearances they are focusing on recording their debut album, set to be released early next year. Check the band out at http://fitzwallace.bandcamp.com/releases and joemartinmusic.co.uk where there have been more than 20,000 hits with numbers growing daily. Why not catch up with Phil and Joe at Chorley Little Theatre on 27th September 2014 or
Edge Hill College Ormskirk on 22nd November 2014. The music of Fitzwallace can be downloaded free at bandcamp or to support the group purchase from iTunes. Phil Cool Stand up Chameleon, available at Amazon UK books and the iBook store. Graham Ashworth

REVIEW: Café Life at Touchstones
Like many Rochdale residents and visitors I was delighted when the café at Touchstones reopened. Now run by Pure Innovations - a registered charity who also run the Boathouse café in Oldham’s Alexandra Park - Café Life is a welcome addition to Rochdale. Once again, the area beyond the visitor information centre feels vibrant and is certainly attracting lots of people. Situated on the ground floor of Touchstones, Café Life is open from

SPRINGHILL HOSPICE
rochdale News & events
We've had a busy few months here at the Fundraising Office. We've put
the finishing touches to our new fundraising offices upstairs at The Craven and are now putting together the menu for the tea rooms which will be opening downstairs in October.
Springy is not very happy at the moment though, he is a little bit miffed that he is not allowed to come to our 25th Anniversary Ball! Alison McGuigan has said that, tuxedo or not, he is far too naughty to attend the star spangled, sparkly affair which is on 4th October at the Town Hall. Tickets are £40 each and available to all... except Springy!
getting into the 'Go Green' swing of things. We can't wait for next year when we will be 'Going Greener'!
The recent Yesteryear Festival was a great success, with thousands flocking to watch and ride on tanks, sample the Hospice's fine hospitality and enjoy all the family fun of the fair. Talking of fun, our inaugural Go Green Day was a barrel of laughs and raised a whopping £11,000 for the Hospice. Green was the order of the day with businesses, schools, nurseries and even people at home
Our fundraising team are saying goodbye to Alison McGuigan, but saying a big smiley hello to two new team members, Saba Salam and Mel Caffrey. It's all change, but the most important member of the team, Springy The Frog, will still be here... bigger, greener and naughtier than ever!
After the Silver Anniversary Ball we'll be getting ready for festive period with our Christmas Fair on 16th November at the Hospice, the Man of Rochdale Awards on 28th November and the fabulous spectacle that is our annual Santa Fun Run... this year we're making it bigger and, if possible, even more fun. We're hoping 400 runners, walkers, baby strollers and dog walkers will be dressing up and skirting the perimeter of Hollingworth Lake on 14th December. These are just a few of the things that are going on at the Hospice; added to these events we have our 2015 calendar and Christmas cards in the shops from the end of August. All these events and the fantastic contributions from the community, all go towards the £3m a year it costs to keep our doors open. That's what spurs us on, because without these events and the help of the people of Rochdale, the Hospice would not be able to carry on providing free of charge services for another 25 years. Thank you from all of the team.

The first Charity Hog Roast and Garden Party hosted by Julie Bowmer, raised a staggering amount of £5190 in aid of Springhill Hospice. In what hopes to become an annual event, Julie organised for 120 guests to be treated to Prosecco on arrival, a thirteen piece jazz band, hog roast, free bar and Reggae Band Jeremiah Ferrari to dance the night away to under a big marquee in the fields by her house in Barkisland, Halifax. Julie, a local businesswoman and owner of Rochdale based accountancy firm TBD Associates Ltd said “as the company was recently given the honour of becoming a Springhill Business Buddy, I really wanted to do something to show how committed we are to helping our local charity”. The Garden Party, which took place on Saturday 16th August had some fantastic auction prizes including a dining experience for ten people with a private chef and corporate hospitality at Manchester City.

TURNING BACK TIME
Once again, Heywood town centre went back in time as they held their popular World War II weekend. The streets were filled with characters in wartime costume and many local shops and businesses supported the popular event as evacuees arrive on the East Lancashire Railway line from Bury. www.rochdalestyle.com

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS
Louise Butterworth is celebrating entering her 50th year in the jewellery trade with a large sale, both in-store and online. Having been in their Drake Street premises since 1903 Butterworths is the oldest established retailer in the town centre and was awarded a Blue Plaque by Rochdale council in 2013. Commenting on her long career Louise said: “One of the best things is to have been involved with our customers at some of the most important moments in their lives and building lifetime relationships and friendships with so many people. Some of our customers are from families who have supported us through two world wars, depressions and recessions. Above all, I consider myself to have been very fortunate indeed, that not only what started as a childhood passion is still undiminished but that I have been able to earn my living by it. I still experience the same thrill at seeing an unusual or very fine gem as I did when first shown a rare and very fine pink diamond by my father in the 1950's.” With no plans to retire, it is expected the sale will run for a few months. After that Louise will continue on Drake Street concentrating on valuations, repairs and online retailing.
