rthday i B h t Happy 5
Welcome to our autumn issue of rochdale style Magazine. This issue marks our 5th birthday and to celebrate we have joined forces with some of our advertisers to offer you an amazing one-off style makeover.
10
This issue includes an interview with rochdale's swimming world champion, Keri-anne Payne, and after 5 years of interviewing many local celebrities, we thought it time to pay tribute to the town's very own superstar, Gracie Fields. reflecting on the five years since we launched, we realise how the economy has changed. However, we still feel positive about rochdale and the magazine remains successful, thanks to the many local businesses who continue to support us. Look out for our Christmas edition, (published Nov) which will be full of festive gift ideas, places to eat and much more.

Since its launch in October 2004, the magazine has gained a deserved reputation for the quality of its features, about Rochdale and its people, past and present. Style Magazine has been well supported by many local celebrities including Sir Cyril Smith, comedian Dave Spikey, Coronation Street newcomer Craig Gazey and many of the Waterloo Road cast, including Ellie Paskell, Jason Done and Denise Welch. We are delighted to have our fifth birthday issue supported by Rochdale’s marathon swimming world-champion and Olympic silver medalist Keri-Anne Payne. Fittingly, this issue also features a tribute to the life of Rochdale’s most famous star of them all, Gracie Fields, who sadly passed away 30 years ago. Style Magazine is totally independent and is put together by a small, dedicated team; our aim being to promote Rochdale in the very best light. We are indebted to the many business people of Rochdale, who have continued to advertise in the magazine, making its publication and its long-term future possible.
Even in these difficult economic times, local businesses have stuck with us, as they realise the importance of promoting their success in Style. We value their help, their friendship and our shared belief that Rochdale is a great place to live.
We always love to hear from our readers (letters@rochdalestyle.com) and thank you for your kind words of compliment. Your support is very much appreciated and we hope you continue to enjoy reading Style. n
Rochdale is full of people who are proud of their town and will fight to see it return to its former glory. We urge our readers to continue to support local businesses and as a community of like-minded people, who all believe in Rochdale, things can only get better!

And overcrowding is not the only problem caused by the economic downturn. Melanie said: “Funds are drying up and we really are in desperate need of donations. We are struggling to pay the bills and staff wages Manager Melanie Dunn explained: “owners can no longer and then there is the huge afford to look after their pets and amount of animal food and care more and more animals are being needed. It is the public who run the sanctuaries and without abandoned, but we have no public support we just cannot space! It is very distressing and worrying when we are forced to carry on.” turn animals away.” With two branches, in Littleborough and Irlam, the charity costs £7000 per month to run. Patron Tina O’brien (Coronation Street’s Sarah Louise Platt) has visited both the sanctuaries and urged people to help her support Animals in Distress by raising There’s no room at the inn at Littleborough’s Animals in Distress Sanctuary, as pets are left homeless by the credit crunch.

much-needed funds, adding, “the animals need us”. The Irlam sanctuary focuses on rehabilitation, whilst the Littleborough sanctuary is the Field of Dreams retirement home. Field of Dreams is home to a huge variety of animals, including cats, rabbits, horses, barn owls, snakes, chinchillas, pigs, geese, peacocks, tortoises, and even a few chipmunks. Some of these animals are permanent residents, but many need loving homes and dedicated owners. The charity has three shops in Swinton, Gorton and Cadishead, which help to raise vital funds for the sanctuaries. They are in need of clothing and unwanted
items for the shops, as these donations have also tailed off recently. Any items can be taken to the Littleborough sanctuary where they will be gratefully received and distributed to the shops. n Melanie would love to hear from anyone who is interested in volunteering at the sanctuary on a regular basis. She also urged people to donate if they possibly can, by calling the centre on 01706 371 731. Visitors are most welcome everyday 10am–4pm. saVe our saNctuaries! bird saNctuary iN cash distress
Three Owls bird Sanctuary recently launched an SOS appeal to raise much-needed funds, over fears that it could close by Christmas. Nigel Fowler and his team have seen many hard times, but the recession has made the past 18 months especially tough. Nigel explained: “The sanctuary is costing more than we are raising day-to-day. We really are struggling and down to our last £30,000 in the bank and the sanctuary costs £10,000 per month to run.” He added: “If we do not get the funds, we may have to close and that is unthinkable, not only for all the thousands of birds out there needing our help, but also
for those currently in our care, for without our help they would nearly all die; no-one else will give a home-for-life for any injured wild bird as we would.” Founded in 1962, the aim of the sanctuary is to take in any wild bird in distress, to rehabilitate it and return it to the wild. When this is not possible, the sanctuary offer it a home, somewhere on their four and a half acre reserve. They admit and help over 2000 wild birds each year, including owls, pheasants, guineafowl, gulls, gannets, kestrels, magpies, ravens and many more feathered friends. Three Owls also run an emergency helpline, which provides 10,000 hours of
advice, helping people to save sick and injured birds all over the world. Supporters of the charity have already gone to great lengths in response to the SOS appeal. On 12th September, Anne Taylor, a bird nurse at Three Owls, swam a mile across Lake Windermere in the Great North Swim. She swam with daughter Claire, who also supported Three Owls and daughter Louise, who raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Lee Clews, a mechanic of I&C Corlett Ltd, Norden, is also planning a
3,500ft parachute jump, to help the struggling sanctuary. n There are many ways you can get involved if you would like to help the charity, from becoming a member, to adopting a bird or joining their Lottery 300 Club. You can also donate via their website www.threeowls.co.uk. The sanctuary welcomes visitors every Sunday, with guided tours 12 noon – 5pm. one of the greatest stars of cinema and music hall, ‘our gracie’ sadly passed away 30 years ago. despite rising to international stardom, gracie always kept her northern, working class style and never forgot her roots. here is the remarkable story of rochdale’s most famous daughter.
‘OUR GRACIE’
9th January 1898 - 27th September 1979
I 10
n 1898, Gracie Fields (Grace Stansfield) was born, over a fish & chip shop, owned by her grandmother, on Molesworth Street, Rochdale. She made her first stage appearance at just seven years old, when she won the first prize, of ten shillings, in a concert at the Old Circus Music Hall, Newgate.
At the age of 14, Gracie changed her surname to Fields and joined blackpool troupe ‘Charburn's Young Stars’. In 1915, she went solo, appearing in Manchester revue ‘Yes I Think So’, with Archie Pitt as the principal comedian. He scribbled in her autograph book on her birthday: “To Gracie Fields. One day you are going to be a big star”.
Gracie left school, aged 12, to join Clara Cloverdale’s “The Nine Dainty Dots”. Her professional debut in variety took place at the Rochdale Hippodrome Theatre in 1910 and she soon gave up her job in the local cotton mill.
She then played in more than 4,000 performances of ‘It’s A bargain’, alongside Pitt, followed by five years of touring with ‘Mr Tower of London’. Then, in 1923, Gracie, aged 25, and Archie, aged 43, were married.

Gracie singing at the opening of The Gracie Fields Theatre in 1978
Two years later, Gracie immediately shot to fame when ‘by Request Mr Tower of London’, opened in London’s West End. In 1928, she began her recording career and also appeared in the first, of what would be ten, Royal Variety performances. She gained a devoted following, with her selfdeprecating jokes, comic songs and monologues. Thanks to her down-to-earth nature, she formed a great rapport with audiences, playing to sold-out theatres across the country. In 1933, Gracie pressed her four millionth record for HMV. She revealed that she had a “marvellous facility for making weird but musical noises”. She said that when her mother was rehearsing songs, such as, ‘Somewhere a Voice is Calling’, she “sat oop and imitated the band parts”. Her mother “sometimes got rale mooked oop!”.
Gracie’s most popular song and later signature tune, ‘Sally’, was specially written for her first film, ‘Sally in Our Alley’ (1931), and went on to become known across the world. Gracie made 15 films in total, including ‘This Week of Grace,’ ‘Look Up and Laugh,’ ‘Sing As We Go,’ ‘Love, Life and Laughter,’ ‘Queen of Hearts’ and ‘The Show Goes On’. by the end of the 1930s, she was the world's highest paid film star. Returning from Hollywood she said: “I still say ‘by gum’ and ‘gee whiz’, I haven’t gone all glamour.” The late 1930s saw Gracie’s popularity peak and, in 1937, she received the Freedom of the borough of Rochdale. A year later, she was awarded the CbE, for services to entertainment and the Order of Officer Sister of St John of Jerusalem, for her charity work.
Aged 67, Gracie, once again, drew crowded audiences with “farewell” concerts, in Canada, Australia and America, including a sell-out concert in New York. In 1970, she appeared on ‘Stars on Sunday’ TV show and returned to Rochdale to open the new Vitool factory, on Molesworth Street, just a few yards from her birthplace, which had been demolished a few years prior. In 1975, Gracie released her last LP ‘The Golden Years of Gracie Fields’ and in 1977, appeared as a special guest on ‘The Michael Parkinson Show’. Gracie’s final stage appearance was at the Royal Variety Show, at the age of 80, in 1978, where she sang ‘Sally’, to a standing ovation, during the finale. The same year, she returned home, to officially open the Gracie Fields Theatre, at Oulder Hill Community School and take part in a tribute concert. One of Gracie's last public appearances was at buckingham Palace, in 1979, when she was made a Dame of the british Empire. On 27 September 1979, she died, aged 81, after a short illness. She was buried in a small cemetery not far from her home in Capri. Throughout her long career, Gracie always made trips home to Rochdale and remained proud of her roots. Despite some criticism, she always refused to talk posh, stating, “I’ll stay as I am”.
Gracie with children at The Gracie Fields Orphanage at Peacehaven. On Christmas Day, 1939, Gracie sang for the troops in the muddy fields of France, despite having just undergone two serious operations. She later toured the USA, Canada, Australia and the Far East in aid of britain’s war effort; a contribution probably unsurpassed by that of any other star.
After one London concert, Queen Mary asked Gracie how she could sing so beautifully and make those “rough” noises at the same time. Gracie said that she was a strong hearty girl from the North.. n Ruth Meredith
After previously divorcing Pitt, Gracie married film director, Monty banks in 1940. After the war, she continued recording, but made no more films, moving more towards light classical music. She immersed herself in charity work and moved to her dream home on the island of Capri.

In 1949, at the age of 51, Gracie made a triumphant return to the London Palladium, even cart wheeling across the stage! A year later Monty banks died suddenly, at the age of 50. Two years later, Gracie found happiness again, marrying boris Alperovici.

hese appreciative comments are a sample of those expressed on feedback forms after my recent blue badge guided walk, entitled' An Afternoon to Remember'. This was a countryside stroll revealing the history and local stories of Norden and Ashworth, with a visit to Millcroft Tea Gardens, one of Rochdale's hidden gems with its olde-worlde charm and home-made fayre. The 25 participants were local and borough residents, plus visitors from further afield, Oldham, Ramsbottom, Warrington and Whitefield. Many had reminiscences of childhood visits to the area. This illustrates the popularity of the guided walks programme to locals and visitors alike. There are three blue badge Guides, offering walks in the 2009 programme, which is printed courtesy of Link4life and available from Touchstones and local libraries. This year they feature tours of Rochdale Town Hall and Heritage walks around Middleton, Milnrow, Norden and Spotland. The walks cost £3 per person and last about two hours. booking is not usually required, just turn up, we will be delighted to see you. The Rochdale Association of blue badge Tourist Guides has an interesting history. In 16

1985 about 25-30 people were selected, from numerous applicants, to train as borough Tourist Guides, on a course organised by the North West Tourist board and the borough Council. This involved 12 months of research and study, lectures and practical training, followed by written exams and practical tests, such as planning a route for a local coach tour and providing an interesting commentary. The successful candidates founded the Association and the first programme of tours was issued in 1986. My son Andrew qualified with me and was, at that time, the youngest blue badge Guide in the country. When he left Rochdale to join the Metropolitan Police Force in London I took over his local Inn Trails, which are still popular to this day. From the early Association, only three of us are still guiding, as well as serving the town in other roles. Anne Thomas worked full time at Rochdale Tourist Information Centre for many years and still works part time at Hollingworth Lake Visitor Centre. Dorothy Greaves is a Warden at The Rochdale Pioneers Museum, Toad Lane and is involved in The Civic Society, the Heritage weekend programme, The Friends of The Town Hall, The Friends of the Art Gallery and Rochdale Music Society. She was recently honoured at a special reception and ceremony at the Mayor's Parlour, when
Councillor Swift acknowledged her longstanding voluntary service to the borough. I was a Primary School teacher in local schools and am now a part time lecturer for the WEA, offering courses in Local History. Dorothy and I took additional training courses to guide in Greater Manchester and I went on to qualify for the North West of England and also obtained an MA degree in Local History. The blue badge is a prestigious professional qualification, now awarded by The Institute of Tourist Guides. In our role as blue badge Guides we are all committed to celebrating the splendid heritage of our area, sharing our local knowledge, our years of experience of local affairs and our expertise, with residents and visitors alike. Anne and I still spend many hours giving talks and slide shows to local associations. We are available for work with schools and private groups. The Guides can be contacted through the Rochdale Tourist Information Centre 01706 924928 to book talks and tours. n Margaret Clay

My curiosity led me to try Reiki, where energy is channelled throughout the body, helping to remove any blockages in the chakras (energy centres). Reiki is a great way to truly relax, as it calms the mind and usually clears away stress or negative emotions. It can work on a physical, mental or emotional level and helps to maintain a good energy flow and a positive outlook. During the hour-treatment I felt incredibly calm and relaxed, and this continued for some time after the treatment. Miraculously, my insomnia was also cured for several days afterwards. Reiki helped me to switch-off and completely unwind… something I am sure most of us should do more often! My Practitioner for the Reiki treatment was local entrepeneur Joanne Potts, the manager of True Serenity. before opening the Centre, Joanne worked happily as a Reiki Practitioner and Teacher, however, she could not ignore the fact that she felt she could do more. With a background in
Project Management and working with people from all walks of life, she decided to follow her gut instinct and in the autumn of 2008, began work on a new project. That project involved creating a friendly, welcoming, energy rich environment and bringing together a group of professionals who were as passionate about their job as she was about hers. All the practitioners at True Serenity are self-employed and highly experienced; sharing in Joanne’s great enthusiasm for the centre. Joanne explained: ‘More and more people are beginning to realise the importance of bringing about balance on all levels Mentally, Emotionally, Spiritually and Physically. Most of us carry emotional baggage and it affects our health. True Serenity is exactly what the name suggests - be true to yourself and your inner peace will emerge. You don’t have to be ill to have therapy, it is about prevention and maintaining that balance.’ Joanne found it frustrating that Holistic Health is often brought under the same heading as Hair and beauty. She explained, ‘Holistic Health is an absolute necessity, not a luxury. This is not something I have learned from books, but something I have experienced and continue to do so’.
True Serenity has an eclectic mix of complementary treatments, services, workshops, classes, talks and demonstrations. ‘If it brings health, harmony, peace, tranquillity, comfort and re-assurance, you name it we will embrace it’ says Joanne. There is literally something to suit everyone; men, women and children, as well as individual group and corporate packages. True Serenity are always open to new suggestions and innovative ideas. They now offer Hypnobirthing classes for mum's to be and partners, followed by baby Massage for the new arrivals. During October, Tibetan Monk Ahbay Rinpoche will be visiting the centre to perform several Puja Ceremonies. Puja is a combination of meditation, healing and teaching, to enlighten people and enable them tap into different methods of healing. All funds from the Pujas will go to charity. The inviting reception area also offers a great choice of retail gifts, including handmade cards, crystals, jewellery, art, essential oils and natural skincare products, all created by local entrepreneurs and artists. n

Andrew and Julie Hilton have been in the village for many years and are famous for their variety of bread, cakes and pies, all baked on the premises. Local butcher, Wildbloods of Norden, was first established in Deeplish, in 1968, and has served the people of Rochdale ever since. They have remained successful because of their finest locally sourced foods, including a home cooked deli section which offers meats, cheese and bbQ chicken. They are famous for their large selection of sausages, including their gold award winning pork sausage. They have also recently added ‘gluton-free’ and ‘slimmers low-calorie sausage’ to their range. To celebrate 40 years in business they have now started selling eco-friendly essian bags, with proceeds in aid of Springhill Hospice.

Norden also has its very own high class optician, Craven & Murray, owned by Lewis Craven and Wendy Murray. Lewis was first past the support race finishing line, at the annual Rochdale Grand Prix this summer. The local optician, who has been cycling since he was 11 years old, represented the cycling team Herbalife Wheelbase. Hundreds of people turned out to support the event, which was organised by leisure and cultural trust, Link4Life. More and more retailers and businesses are realising the potential of being situated in the increasingly popular village. Mother & daughter partnership, Anne Tattersall and Jenna Hallworth, who set up Tip Toes Children’s shoe shop six years ago, have recently moved the business into the former florist shop on Edenfield Road. Anne said “We are delighted with the response we have had since our move to bigger premises. We have been made to feel very welcome in Norden and have joined the Norden Environmental and Economic Village Association (NEEVA). We are conveniently placed in the village and delighted that our regular customers have continued to come in and see us”.

The Thamin's pledge is a simple one - to provide discerning diners with vintage Indian cuisine and classic dishes from the subcontinent’s lavish gastronomic history. Curry is an extremely tasty and popular cuisine, but it is a shame when people think that the dishes they are eating, which are sometimes packed with artificial colours and flavours, are the same as those that Indian people might eat in their own home. The aim is to show that Indian food does not have to be an unhealthy indulgence - if prepared in the right way our traditional foods can be as healthy as they are delicious. The restaurant's renowned award-winning head chef, Sheikh Kamran, is a culinary purist who relishes the opportunity to demonstrate how traditional food ingredients can be adapted to suit the most discerning local tastes. Ladies… your man needs you! ‘behind every successful man is a strong woman’; that saying could not ring more true in the case of making our men look and feel great. The metro-sexual man is a rare species and a species i’m not too sure should be allowed to evolve? After all, I don’t want my other half to be spending more time in the bathroom than I do, pondering over styling products in the supermarket aisle or constantly catching a glimpse of his reflection in every conceivable object that will refract light. I want a real man, a wellgroomed version of himself; a manly, confident male who takes pride in the way he looks, but doesn’t obsess about big brands and gimmicks. I’m sure you would agree that without our help our other halves would look more like Chewbacca than George Clooney. but don’t worry help is at hand; with many skincare brands now catering for their increasing 40

The Retreat Nails and Things, based in the heart of Rochdale, is one such place that offer an extensive list of male treatments, including male manicures, pedicures, waxing and safe tanning. They even cater for men in their luxurious spa.
Now, increasing numbers of men of all ages are taming their bushy brows, whether they admit to it or not. Laura Prime, senior therapist and salon owner at The Retreat says eyebrows are the first thing women notice when looking at a man, “eyebrow shaping gives a much cleaner, smarter look to the face… when brows don’t sit so heavily the whole face looks clearer".
One regular customer at The Retreat Spa, a 30-year-old marketing specialist, stated "Once my boyfriend saw how people at work were noticing him more after he had his eyebrows shaped at The Retreat, he began using a nice aftershave and wearing a crisp shirt. He even started adding new elements to his regime like matching socks!".

The truth is that men love to look good, they just don’t have a clue where to start. Keep it simple and suggest the basics; male manicures to look after their often rough hands and misshapen bitten nails, male pedicures to remove uncomfortable hard skin, keep feet moisturised and toe nails in great shape, chest or back waxing for a natural looking, smooth physique and eyebrow grooming. Eyebrows may be pointless clusters of hair to most men, but they are more important than you may think. Aside from their physiological use, they are a key focal point of the face.

Spring
Flowering Bulbs
O
ctober is the time to plant a whole host of spring flowering bulbs; everything from Daffodils to Narcissus, Tulips to Snowdrops, Crocus to bluebells, and many more. All to often people only think of planting Daffodils and Tulips when they see them in flower. This can be done but it is a lot more expensive. The experienced gardener always plans ahead and starts planting bulbs just as the other plants in their garden are starting to die back or lose their leaves. Most spring bulbs flower well before other plants really get going, so it is a lot easier to picture the end result if you plant when the surrounding plants have lost most of their leaves. bulbs, without exception, need a really well drained soil to avoid them rotting away over the winter. Add some sharp grit to the base of the hole if necessary. As a general rule, plant bulbs in a hole about twice the depth of the size of the bulb. It is a good idea to mix some bonemeal with the soil to encourage rooting. Indeed, a top dressing of bonemeal each year in the summer will help reinvigorate bulbs for the following spring. 46
www.rochdalestyle.com
-plant them nowWhen planted in a suitable location, bulbs will give pleasure for years and they will indeed multiply over time to produce even more flowers. In general, the less you disturb them, the better they will perform. Most bulbs thrive in any bright, open position, either in groups or in association with other shrubs. In very windy spots it is best to choose short-stemmed varieties, which will not catch the wind, although, many Daffodils are remarkably robust and can cope. Underplanting deciduous shrubs is an excellent idea, especially using Snowdrops, bluebells, Crocus or Anemones, all of which will form a carpet of colour over time. Deep shade, such as conifers, can be very challenging to deal with, but even here dainty cyclamen will thrive and gradually spread over time. bulbs are ideal for use in pots and containers, which can be moved into a prominent position as the flowers appear. From January until May, spring bulbs can be used to brighten up any kind of pot, barrel, window box or hanging basket and they can cope with the worst of the weather too. but now is the best time to be planting
your spring containers. First ensure there is good drainage at the bottom of the container to avoid water logging and bulbs rotting. Next add a good 10-15cm of potting compost and a sprinkling of bonemeal or bulb fertiliser. Decide what selection of bulbs you want to plant and then plant the largest bulbs first followed by more compost and the smallest bulbs last. This creates a layered planting. Careful choice of varieties can produce stunning colour combinations and also extend the flowering time of the overall display. bulbs can also be used in containers indoors. Most commonly Hyacinths are used because of their strong sweet fragrance. Many people like to have these in their homes at Christmas, but to achieve this, specially ‘prepared’ bulbs must be used and ‘forced’ in the dark for 10-12 weeks to initiate flowering. Once flowers have formed they are brought into the house and grown in a bright, cool position, which will prolong the flowering period. so don’t just think of bulbs when you see them in flower, plant them now, save money and enjoy watching them ‘pop up’ in the spring! n tim baylis gordon rigg gardening expert

We blokes will love this stage because it mainly involves making lists. While the budget is important, make sure you have researched running costs, especially when buying second-hand. A good rule of thumb is if you think the car is too expensive to run new, you probably can not afford the upkeep of a second hand car. So let’s assume you’ve done your research, checked the running costs, had an insurance quote and read some reviews. Where do the best bargains come from? FOR NEW CARS: Internet brokerage sites have been with us for a while now. But there are two which consistently have the best deals. Broadspeed.com This is one of the oldest sites in the business with a clear and understandable format, which will give you a price for, not only the car new, but pre-registered and nearly-new cars. Finance can be arranged,
48
www.rochdalestyle.com
as well as options such as personal contract plans and leasing. Watch out for the occasional offer, such as the half price Dodge Avengers they were selling a few months ago. Drivethedeal.com This is another site in the same vane as Broadspeed. The main difference though, is that you can’t just browse the offers, you will need to submit an enquiry about the model you are interested in. There is no commitment so it is always worth checking, just to see if you can save a few more pennies. LOCAL DEALER Sometimes you just can’t beat the personal touch. The only problem is that you will probably need to haggle to get the best price, which may put some customers off. As long as the banter remains pleasant, you can get a cracking deal face to face. USED CARS: Autotrader.co.uk The biggest and best range of used cars on the net, as I type this, 317,725 cars are listed. The search engine is simple making it easy to filter out the dross to find your ideal car.
One word of warning though, a number of scammers are known to be using the site. A quick search now has turned up a BMW, which should be priced at around £15,000 being listed for £8,000. If you find a deal that is too good to be true like this, exercise extreme caution or better still, look elsewhere. Ebay No longer just the site where household junk finds a new home but now Britain’s second biggest lister of used cars. Plenty of bargains to be had but, to use a colloquial phrase, you’ll need cash on the hip. The lower end of the market is best catered for with some really good bargains to be had if you are looking for a cheap runabout. At the upper end of the price range you’ll find the usual dealers and outlets. As with Auto Trader above, exercise maximum caution if the deal seems to be too good! n

You
ARE WHAT YOU EAT!
EDITOR Colin Meredith
need to shed those few extra pounds? there are so many optIons to help you lose weIght, but some can be borIng and torturous. my wII fIt had been tellIng me I was obese, so I thought I better make a concerted effort to lose that mIddle age spread!
I
discovered Dietcare, through Gill Meetoo, who holds regular consultations at Physio Works on Dale Street, Milnrow. What caught my attention was the idea that you could ‘eat yourself slim’, by boosting your metabolism. For the first two weeks, I was put on a cleansing diet and lost four pounds but, amazingly, I never felt hungry during that period. Not only was I delighted by the quick weight loss, but I could now fit into clothes which were, previously, abandoned in the wardrobe! Gill explained that the secret to consistent weight loss is to know which foods can boost your metabolism. Everybody’s metabolism is different and this is why one diet does not fit all. I discovered that it is vital, if you want to be a successful slimmer, to have an individual one hour Metabolic Rate Assessment, which Dietcare offer. Dietcare believes in healthy eating, so all personal plans are based on real ‘everyday’ food, which can be purchased from your local supermarket. To sustain effective weight loss, your plans are changed regularly and a maintenance plan is provided to keep you slim.

Gill has provided some special health tips, especially for Style readers. If you can incorporate the following hints and tips into your lifestyle, you will feel much healthier, fitter and, if you need to, you can even lose a few unwanted pounds. Contact Gill at dietcare on 07947442094. *STOP or cut down on smoking. Smoking is the single, most dangerous habit to damage your health. It is important to eat extra fruit if you are a smoker, because smoking destroys the vitamin C in your body. You must eat four fruits a day if you smoke. *Remember to eat your FIVE portions of fresh vegetables and fruit every day. 4oz is the equivalent of a piece of fruit or portion of vegetables. *Try to buy ORGANIC fruit and vegetables. If this is not possible, wash your fruit and vegetables in one part cider vinegar to twelve parts water. Then rinse away the ‘odour’ from the vinegar. Washing your vegetables this way will dramatically reduce the pesticides and chemicals that are used for growth. *Attempt a few EXERCISES each day - exercising on an empty stomach burns up more calories. If you take strenuous exercise, e.g., football, rugby, aerobics, you need to eat a piece of fruit immediately before and after the exercise. This is to supply you with the stamina that you need and to raise your blood sugar level naturally. *HOT FOOD is more satisfying. A cup of hot soup, before any meal, will help to fill you up.
*NEVER drink, or allow your children to drink from cans. Cans can be lined with aluminium, which is a chemical and not good for promoting health. Always drink from a glass container. *DO NOT microwave meals in plastic containers. Always remove from the plastic container, and place in a glass container, before microwaving. Microwaving produces chemicals, through plastic and this is not good for your health. *Remember eating SMALL AND OFTEN is healthier. Have your breakfast, then a piece of fruit midmorning and your lunch two/three hours later, with another piece of fruit mid-afternoon. Finally, your evening meal, as usual, followed with your third piece of fruit before bed. This will keep your metabolic rate working faster and you will feel fitter. *Don’t forget your mid morning SNACK. A pear or a kiwi is a good source of vitamins. Kiwi fruit has more vitamin C than other fruits and when eating it, use a spoon and eat it like ‘a boiled egg’, really scraping the fruit. *REMEMbER THERE ARE NO FORbIDDEN FOODS EVERYTHING IN MODERATION.n

CURRY NIGHT SPICES UP CHARITY APPEAL A Rochdale Curry Night added spice to paramedic Gary Eaton’s Parisian cycle adventure in aid of children’s charity, MedEquip4Kids. Gary, who aims to cycle 300 miles, from London to Paris, set an original target of raising £1,500, but he has already smashed this to raise more than £2,100, with events such as an NHS v Paramedics
football match, murder mystery nights and a disco. And his total was boosted by a further £1,125 by the Curry Night at Raj Restaurant, on Edenfield Road, Rochdale. Up to 60 guests enjoyed a night of Indian cuisine followed by a quiz, raffle and auction including prizes of a signed Rochdale AFC football, executive Rochdale AFC

WRESTLERS TAKE STOCK On 31 August, The Rose n Bowl, in Waterfoot, Rossendale, was, yet again, the venue for the third World Gravy Wrestling Championships. First into the ring were Infrognito and Chef Big Bad John.. This sticky event was part of the Pennine Lancashire Festival of Food & Culture 2009. This summer’s Feel Good Festival attracted thousands of visitors to Rochdale town centre, for good food, live music and lots of entertainment. There was a great carnival atmosphere, with street theatre artists, circus workshops, food and drink stalls and even free therapy for the adults, from True Serenity Holistic Centre. Celebrity chefs Aldo zilli and Aazam Ahmad, entertained the crowds with live cookery demonstrations, using local produce from the food market on The Butts.
GETTING THE SHOW ON THE ROAD Rochdale Mitsubishi had their official showroom opening in early September and celebrated with a fun packed weekend. There were clowns, face painting and an enormous bouncy castle for the kids. 58

Nineties Britpop band, The Bluetones, headlined the festival, performing on the main outdoor stage, whilst XFM’s Clint Boon, showed off his DJing talents. There was also live music at venues across the town centre. There was plenty of delicious locally produced food on offer (including pigeon & pea pies!) and the festival was certainly a huge success. Let’s hope there are more fantastic events like this to come.
