itanic Ball The GEM Appeal Titanic Memorial Event at the Riverside Whitworth, marking 100 years since the tragedy, raised £5000 for the charity. Guests joined in with the theme with most dressing in period costume and entering the “ship” via a gangplank, kindly supplied by Proscenium of Littleborough. Many more props added to the theme and feel of the event which included a five course meal supplied by Lords of

Whitworth, with the main course being steak SUNK in a red wine sauce!

The winter ball this year is on 24 November and will be held at Events City near to Barton Square at the Trafford Centre. This year’s theme is Rio Carnival!

The Moorhouse family, from Rochdale, recently hosted a luncheon at The Bella Vista restaurant. The event, organised by Pam Grice, raised ÂŁ6000 for Kidney Research UK.

Pam's sons Andrew and David Moorhouse have both received kidney transplants and her husband Brian lost his own battle with kidney disease in 1967.

Back in 2003, Maggie Moorhouse gave one of her kidneys to her husband David. In

January this year his younger brother, Andrew, received an organ from Deborah Howarth, his goddaughter.

Pam explained that the event was also to thank Maggie and Deborah for their extraordinary gifts and the medical teams at Guy’s Hospital and Manchester Royal Infirmary who have helped the family since Brian was first diagnosed.

Welcome to our autumn edition and Olympic special, celebrating the fantastic success of our local athletes in the 2012 Olympics. We hope you enjoy our exclusive interviews with Stuart Bithell, Nicola White and Sophie Cox.

I

t has truly been a memorable few months since our last issue, with plenty to celebrate. Back in June, we had the Jubilee celebrations, then in July thousands of people lined the streets for the Olympic torch relay and, of course, we had huge success at the Games.

Rochdale’s new leisure & sports centre, on Entwistle Road, opened just in time for London 2012 and is proving to be a fantastic asset to the town.

The town is famous for its co-operative spirit and that spirit continues 4

today in the way small businesses in the town are helping each other to survive through Rochdale’s High Street Foundation. I urge you to support our independent retailers, who rely upon and greatly value your custom.

I would particularly ask you to remember that, despite the lengthy road closure, the quality shops on Drake Street are still open and need your support now more than ever.

This edition marks eight years of our family run magazine, actually put together by only three Rochdale people. We are not

funded by Rochdale Council or any other organisation - we are just a small family business who believe in Rochdale and what it has to offer. We work closely together in an effort to highlight the positives of our town and bring you plenty of ‘good news’ stories.

Bucking the nationwide trend with 89% of its students planning to go onto university in September, the 402 A Level students achieved a 99% pass rate across 30 subjects. At AS Level, the student’s performance put them in the top 1% nationally.

Despite the recent hike in tuition fees there is still a real desire for these students to go to university even if it means living at home and commuting.

Julian Appleyard, Principal, comments: “This is our first year for A Level results and I’m absolutely delighted that we have set the bar so high. I would like to take this opportunity to thank both the students and the staff for their dedication and hard work as it really has all paid off.

In the world of television magic, no one has enjoyed more success than Paul Daniels, his popular BBC1 series ‘The Paul Daniels Show’ having topped the ratings for 15 years. He became a household name and went on to front other prime time shows including ‘Every Second Counts’ and ‘Odd One Out’.

His more recent television appearances include Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway (ITV), Strictly Come Dancing (BBC1) and alongside Debbie on ‘When Louis Met…presented

by Louis Theroux’ (BBC2).

The legendary magician is promising to leave the audience ‘spellbound’ when he brings his live show to the borough this autumn.

Paul, along with his wife and assistant Debbie McGee, will be performing their ‘Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow’ show at the Middleton Arena on Sunday 21 October.

Style Magazine caught up with the man behind the magic…

When did you decide to become a magician?

I wanted to be a magician from the age of 11. I read a book called ‘How to entertain at parties’ and it had some magic tricks in it. I still carry that first trick with me. Of course my parents, like most parents, wanted me to have a 'proper' job and I did other stuff until I was 30. Can I claim the 19 years of expense and study back from my tax?

What can we expect from your upcoming show, ‘Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow’?

Hair Today Gone Tomorrow premiered at a London Comedy Festival, went on to the Edinburgh Fringe and then toured the UK and Southern Ireland. The number one comment that kept coming through on Twitter, Facebook and at the live gigs, was that people didn't expect it to be so funny. They expected to be baffled, and they were, but it was the comedy that turned the magic into entertainment.

How choreographed is it all?

There has to be an organised 'route' throughout the show. The magic has to happen in order but what wraps around the effects changes every night. I never work to a fixed script, preferring improvisation.

You sliced your finger off whilst building new magic props earlier this year… do you still make your own magic tricks or has Debbie banned it?

Debbie didn't like me going back into the workshop, but it would have been a bad decision to let an accident alter my enjoyment of making stuff. Thanks to a genius of a surgeon, I finished up only losing the tip of my ring finger on the left hand, although even that meant weeks of re-training.

…why didn’t you magic your finger back on?!

Oh you little believer you....

Would you ever return to TV? I don't think they'll ask, so the illusions I had planned will never be seen. I don't mind that 'cause my life has been so much more interesting since I finished the last series.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

What advice would you give to young aspiring magicians?

Every night, every audience, every close up trick, is for me, a highlight. I love my job. I love this business.

Don't copy anyone. There is no point in being another Brown, Dynamo, Blaine or any other magician. Work in your own style. And never leave your money in the dressing room.

Which modern magicians do you like/dislike?

My favourite current performers are Mac King and Penn and Teller. I admire some others even though I don't admire the way they work. I admire anyone who can make a living in this crazy business. It would be madness to expect everyone to like the same performers.

Do you have any hobbies, aside from magic?

Not really. I like computers and photography, but most of my life is still magic. I read magic books and try out new stuff constantly.

What is the secret to yours and Debbie’s lasting marriage?

We like each other. We are good friends who make each other laugh all the time.

And we have separate bathrooms!

If you hadn’t become a magician, what path might your life have taken?

The ‘Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow’ show promises lots of that trademark magic, laughter and amazement from one of the most popular men in show business.

2012

2012 has been a busy year for Chartered Physiotherapist Lisa Sharratt. In addition to running The Physiotherapy Clinic in Bamford, treating neck and back problems, analysing complicated biomechanical problems and teaching Pilates in the studio upstairs, she has also been working with elite swimmers at the City of Manchester Aquatics. Not only did Lisa keep on top of all the aches and pains Olympic swimmer Jess Lloyd encountered during her gruelling training schedule, as part of the GB freestyle relay team, she also worked at the Olympics herself, as a LOCOG volunteer in the Aquatics venues.

isa commented: “i was really lucky, not only to be selected to work as a physiotherapist at the olympics, but to have the opportunity to see some of the swimming, diving, synchro and water polo competitions. the atmosphere around the whole park was fantastic.”

Back in Rochdale, there’s cause for another celebration, the ten year anniversary of owning The Physiotherapy Clinic. Bowen Practitioner Lorraine Ashworth is also celebrating her first successful year at the clinic.

“An holistic approach is taken to the assessment and treatment of each individual client attending The Physiotherapy Clinic.”, says Lisa.

One aspect of physiotherapy involves the assessment of movement. How a person performs a specific task, from driving or working at a computer, to running and participating in a sport or hobby, can create problems.

Stress on muscles and joints can develop when “normal” movements change. Physiotherapy treatment may include improving these movements with education and exercises and settling the symptoms with manual therapy and direct treatment. The Physiotherapy Clinic now offer pilates classes, based on Joseph Pilates core stability and strengthening exercises; perfect for maintaining these improvements and preventing recurrence.

However, the same approach is not right for everyone.

Offering alternative therapies such as homoeopathy and the Bowen Technique, is part of an holistic service, available for anyone from newborn babies and children to adults, the elderly, pregnant women, people with mental or physical disabilities and athletes.

The Bowen Technique involves sequences of gentle rolling-type moves over the body to stimulate the body's natural healing mechanism through the connective tissue network. It is not a form of massage and there is no manipulation but the treatment allows the body to adjust and rebalance itself and may relieve strain, discomfort and improve energy circulation and lymphatic flow.

Homoeopathy considers physical and psychological and environmental factors and matches symptoms with a “like for like”

remedy, to encourage the body’s own healing mechanisms.

Helen McCarthy, organiser of St Alban’s Street party commented: “The sun came out and everybody contributed; we shared wonderful food and it brought everybody together… true community spirit.”

rochdale yachtsman, stuart Bithell, 26, won an olympic debut silver medal this summer, alongside scottish-born Luke Patience in the Men’s 470 Class.

tuart and Luke admitted any disappointment at missing out on gold was ‘very short-lived’ after they scooped silver at the sailing regatta at Weymouth and Portland on Friday 10th august.

The pair went into the double points medal race sitting second overall, four points behind Australian leaders, Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page. With every placing worth two points in the medal race, Team GB still had a shot at gold if they could finish ahead of the Aussies with one other boat between them.

The Brits got off to a great start and in the early stages it was advantage Patience and Bithell as they rounded the top mark in pole position, and with that vital boat in the form of Croatia between themselves and the Aussies.

But the Australians started to take control and a British penalty for 16

pumping on the final downwind run consolidated Australia’s hold on gold as they crossed in second and Britain fourth.

In a truly Olympic show of unity, both crews leapt into the water to celebrate their respective achievements, while up on the Nothe spectator area both sets of Brit and Aussie parents and supporters joined forces in their celebrations.

With the Olympic silver medal now around their necks the boys could not be happier.

Bithell said: “The Aussies sailed a fantastic race, we tried to attack but they are worthy champions. We’re happy with second, it’s our first Games. We had a good start in the race, just managed to get our noses in front at the first mark but they were so close behind. We actually got a little bit away from the fleet surprisingly in light airs, but we wanted those guys around to mix it up. We gave it our best shot and it

was a shame they just got their noses in front on the run and it was bit easier for them from there.”

Patience added: “We didn’t hear the crowd in the race but when we crossed the finish line with all the celebrations it was mad, manic! It was not something we experience that often and it was so cool that everyone was here. The crowd was amazing as always. Every athlete has been saying in their interviews that it makes a difference, but it genuinely does.”

Bithell and Patience paired up in 2009 and within just two weeks had secured a silver medal at the ISAF World Championships. A year later, the pair were ranked fourth in the world and 2011 ended with another silver medal from the world championships in Perth. They also collected a European Championship silver medal last year.

Style caught up with Stuart a few weeks after the Games to reflect on an eventful summer…

Style - What was the highlight of the Games for you?

Stuart - The highlight of the games was for sure standing in the tunnel about to walk out into the stadium for the opening ceremony.

Were you disappointed not to get the gold?

Yes and no, we set a goal to be best in the world and obviously that week we were second best, but for first time young Olympians you can't argue with silver.

It looked like you and Luke were having a lot of fun, were you as relaxed as you seemed?

Oh, don’t get me wrong, we were very serious, but we just happened to be having the best two weeks of our lives at the same time.

What did you think of the opening & closing ceremonies?

Unforgettable experiences. It will never be the same as it was infront of a home crowd.

Did you bump into any of your idols at the Games?

We got chatting to Sir Chris Hoy at the opening ceremony - that was inspirational.

Are you having a well-deserved break at the moment?

Yes, I'm in Lyme Regis doing a fun sailing event.

What’s next for you and Luke?

Rio! What impact do you think London 2012 has had on the country?

I hope the Games has a huge impact on inspiring a generation. Jack, the nine-yearold chap sat next to me at the moment is fully inspired and wants to go sailing ASAP! I think the whole nation played a big part in helping this. ruth Meredith

this summer, rochdale hockey player Nicola White and her teammates won team gB’s first olympic medal in the sport for 20 years. team gB beat New Zealand 3-1 in the bronze medal match at the riverbank arena.

tyle caught up with Nicola as she settled back into life in Littleborough, as an olympic champion…

When did you first start playing hockey?

I started playing hockey aged 7 at Estcourt Primary School (part of Oldham Hulme Grammar School).

Who/what has been your inspiration?

From a young age, I knew I wanted to be an Olympian. That was my dream and I think it was from watching past Olympics on television that I’d say "I want to do that"… little knowing I ever would! However, my inspiration since 18

my teens has been Dame Kelly Holmes and even more so when she achieved double gold. I see her dedication and passion to succeed, which is what I relate to.

How did it feel to win a bronze medal in front of your home crowd?

An athlete couldn’t wish for anything more special than winning a medal at a home Olympics, infront of a home crowd!! After the disappointment of the semi, there was no way we were walking from that pitch without the bronze! The crowd was right behind us for all the games and to share that win with them and

the nation at home watching was phenomenal.

What was your first impression of the Olympic village?

My first impression was that it was bigger than it looks on tv. It had fun details hidden all around the village like art pieces, large animals from the different continents and a large Olympic rings with a platform to have pictures on. It felt very sociable and looked the part.

Were you at the opening or closing ceremonies? What did you think of them?

Yes we were at both the opening and the closing ceremonies. The opening was

unbelievable - the noise when you first enter and the excitement from the whole of Team GB as we were waiting in the tunnel to walk in was buzzing. I remember the opening ceremony at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2009 and how quickly it went, so I wanted to make the most of this one and treasure the moment of millions of people all cheering for you! Both were spectacular shows and I cannot wait to watch them back now I am home to see it from a different point of view.

What was the after party like?

The after party was fun and being amongst famous faces such as David Cameron, Dame Kelly Holmes, Princess Anne, Zara Phillips, Arnold Schwarzenegger and many more was a real treat!

What advice would you give to aspiring athletes?

Aspiring athletes have to love their sport. To compete at the top is tough but as long as you have a passion for your sport that’s half the job

done. Commit to what it is you want to achieve and don't let anyone tell you that you can’t achieve it.

How would you encourage others to start playing hockey?

Hockey is such a sociable sport and it’s a great way to keep fit. You can meet new friends and there are adapted games now to suit differing abilities and ages... it is growing and it will continue to grow.

with media, visits and homecomings and it’s only just started getting quieter. Now I have more time to think, it’s dawned on me what has just happened and that I am an Olympian! I am off on holiday for a long weekend to Venice with my mum, so that will be the first real rest and relaxation.

What are your plans for the future?

At the end of September I am back studying at Loughborough College, to finish my BSc Sports Science that I started a long long time ago (six years) so that is the near future plan. I would love to carry on for the next Olympic cycle for Rio 2016, which starts in April 2013 back down at Bisham Abbey.

SOPHIE COX Littleborough’s sophie Cox bowed out of the olympic women's 52kg this summer, when she lost her opening bout to Kum ae an of North Korea.

he 29-year-old, who came out of retirement for the games, battled well during the opening stages. however, she was caught by a yuko score, with one minute and 45 seconds left by the 2008 olympic silver medallist, which proved enough for victory. style found out about sophie’s courageous return to Judo and what’s next for her…

After a couple of years, some club members entered the Thailand Open judo competition and suggested I might join them. I did, won a gold medal, and then two martial arts contests, and gradually my enthusiasm started to return. Then when Jacques Rogge announced “The Games of the 30th Olympiad in 2012 are awarded to the city of… London” I knew that I had to return and make one more attempt at winning an Olympic medal.

When I did return, it felt like a fresh start.

You dropped out of judo for five years after Athens. Why? Sophie: I had a disappointing Olympic games (at Athens) even though I finished 9th, and an even worse World Championships where I lost my first contest. The national training centre at Bisham Abbey closed and all in all I had the spirit knocked out of me. At the time I could not raise the enthusiasm to train for another three years for the Beijing Olympics, so I took the opportunity to travel and ended up in Thailand, where I took a job as an English teacher and found a sports club, which had a judo class.

What differences did you notice coming back to judo after 5 years?

The muscles hurt a lot to begin with! The basics were the same; some of the same people were still competing internationally. But there were changes in the rules and I had to change my weight category, which was hard. It was nice to find the same camaraderie, particularly at my old judo club in Bacup and at Kendal, which also has outdoor facilities.

Fortunately, my Mum and Dad were very supportive, which meant that I could afford to live in Dartford and train with the national squad. Brian Moore, my coach from Burnley who had trained me

from the age of eight, was always there, as before, to help, support and offer words of advice, or shout at me when I didn’t train hard enough.

You had an unlucky draw for your first fight - did this affect you?

I have found over the last couple of years if I can get through my first fight, then I can go on to do well, so this one was make or break. I did not worry beforehand she was an Olympic silver medallist, I just went out there to fight my own fight. But I just could not get it right and it was a tough draw. I felt fit and strong, it just did not happen on the day.

What’s next for you?

I might be 29 but I still feel 25 in judo terms. I will take a couple of months to take a look at things and see how British Judo want to go. I will keep all doors open. I am currently taking a Masters Degree in Strength and Conditioning at the University of East London, and would like to be able to apply that to judo. I would like to coach as well. ruth Meredith

as the re-opening of the rochdale Pioneers Museum draws ever closer it stands as a reminder to the local people of the town’s heritage and contribution within the woollen and cotton industries. rochdale was once a successful mill town at the height of the industrial revolution. Boasting a rich history of textile production it has since seen a steady decline and currently 90% of clothing sold in this country is being imported from outside the UK.

Mary’s BottoM LiNe

M

ary Portas is a woman on a mission to kick-start British manufacturing and inspire businesses to revive our textile industry. her message to consumers is clear: buy fewer things of higher quality and value that will last longer. in her Channel 4 programme, Mary’s Bottom Line, Portas took to the streets of Manchester and questioned consumers as to the amount they are prepared to spend on lingerie items of a higher quality, and if they could be persuaded to spend a little more in order to ensure that they buy British manufactured goods. her findings were insightful; a new generation of consumers seemed conscious of trying to avoid purchasing from those chains whose products are shipped straight from sweatshops - where child labour is prevalent and workers are often labouring in poor conditions.

A family run business from the beginning, they provided 60 job opportunities for the local community, employing seamstresses, cutters, designers, pattern makers, pressers and packers. As the British manufacturing industry fell upon hard times, so did the company and were left in the heart-breaking position of having to make virtually their entire workforce redundant.

What we’ve lost is a pride of people who worked in the factories. Whole swathes of businesses closed down, whole communities slowly eroded and I just think we’ve completely sacrificed that, for the sake of cheap. I want to bring it back! – Mary Portas, Mary’s Bottom Line.

This factory (once a thriving machine of industry) lay dormant, effete and in desperate need of revival. With the financial backing of Channel 4, Mary took to the streets of Middleton in search of potential candidates for employment, her mission statement, ‘Bringing people who are down on their look, into work’. With the help of Portas, Headen and Quarmby employed eight new members of staff from the local area and set about sourcing British materials to turn into a new line of ‘Kinky Knickers’, which are currently being sold in retail outlets such as Marks and Spencer, Selfridges, John Lewis, Boots, ASOS, Liberty of London and of course, Mary & House of Fraser.

H & Q have been in a position to provide jobs and careers within the local community. This surge in new business can only serve to have a hugely positive impact on the lives of their newly employed workforce.

David Moore, a representative of Headen and Quarmby, has very kindly agreed to be interviewed about the factory’s participation in the filming of the programme and the effect it has had on the business: How did Headen and Quarmby's appearance on the programme, 'Mary's Bottom Line' first come about?

Personally I feel very honoured to be involved in and responsible for providing new local jobs, especially having witnessed the previous decline of the industry and the impact this had on the area. If someone had told me eight years ago that this would be possible, i'd never have believed them.

Being witness to the confidence some of these individuals have found since joining the company and their personal development is almost reward in itself. Everyone here is aware that they are part of 'the team' and responsible for its success or failure. While many have different roles no one is more or less important than the other. I think this approach instils confidence and a positive work ethic.

What message would you send to high street chains who only stock products manufactured abroad? How would you encourage them to buy from British manufacturers?

I would ask every retailer to look closely at every aspect of each product they buy / sell, not to just focus on cost price alone. In many instances it can be proved beyond doubt that it is actually cheaper to buy British rather than importing stock.

DM - Mid last year we were contacted by Endemol (the tv production company) who asked if we'd be interested in taking part in a programme based on reviving the UK garment manufacturing industry. Interviews and meetings took place and we were finally selected in September 2011 as the location for the programme.

Prior to filming how confident were you (H&Q) that the programme would have a successful impact on the business? What were your initial reservations, if any?

We had our reservations but the programme producers reassured us that this wasn't a 'fly on the wall' documentary about Headen & Quarmby, it was about recruiting people who had been subject to long term unemployment and teaching them the necessary skills to manufacture high quality clothing. In addition, each of the trainees were given the opportunity to achieve an NVQ qualification in key skills and literacy.

Myself and the rest of the staff at Headen & Quarmby had always been great believers in the attributes of British made clothing, so to be given the opportunity to involve ourselves in this project outweighed any reservations we may have had.

The result of the programme has obviously had a hugely positive impact on your business. How does this compare with previous manufacturing output of Headen & Quarmby, before the decline in British manufacturing?

The programme has had a positive impact on our business and enabled us to breathe life back into our ability to manufacture clothing in the UK. We've received a lot of interest from retailers looking to produce some ranges of clothing back in Britain, although our focus at the moment is to develop the product, which gave us this opportunity, i.e. 'Kinky Knickers'.

Retailers need to take an open view and factor in implications like the inability to reorder far eastern products within the same season if sales are going well, the impact of reducing 'marking down' large quantities of imported stock when sales aren't going well and this is not to mention the effect faulty, non-returnable stock has on their businesses nor the outlay of large amounts of money to fund container’s of imported stock.

The environmental impact is another important element, I could go on...

It's probably not fair to compare where we are at the moment with our production before the decline, however we sincerely hope we can get back to that point if not beyond and all indications to date are that we can.

How many new job opportunities have been created within the local community since the filming of the programme? How does it feel for H&Q to have had such a positive impact on the lives of others?

To date, we've created 24 new jobs and we're still recruiting. At the moment the target is 34 by the end of this year. In conjunction with Mary Portas & Endemol we're about to embark on another high profile recruitment drive in Middleton. www.rochdalestyle.com

Bags of Style and Craft Cottage are the latest retailers to set up shop with both opening units in the Rochdale Emporium. ask co-operators about the origins of co-operation and they will know of rochdale, with many immediately quoting 31 toad Lane and 1844. When 28 working men came together to form the rochdale equitable Pioneers society, they saw co-operating as a way to improve both their own situations and the lives of others.

The Rochdale Pioneers Museum is unusual because it is the building itself and what happened there that makes the museum significant. The building was not only where the first shop of the Pioneers was opened, but where they began to develop the co-operative values and principles and to give support to other co-operative societies being set up. it was not the first co-operative, but the Pioneers learned from the experiences of earlier co-operatives, which had often run into problems through trading difficulties caused by giving credit or through not recruiting new members as time went on. they read and discussed the writings of people like robert owen, dr William King and george Jacob holyoake, ensuring that their business model could be replicated and applied to different types of business.

News of the business model of the Rochdale Pioneers spread rapidly, and one of the best known exhibits in the Museum is the Visitors Book that the Pioneers bought in 1862 to record their visitors. While people came to find out more about their work from different parts of Britain, they also came from across the world, with the first Japanese visitor arriving in 1872.

Over the last two years, the ROCHDALE Project (Renewing Our Co-operative Heritage, Developing the Archive and

Learning Experiences) has brought major changes at the Rochdale Pioneers Museum, which will reopen in the Autumn. The project has benefitted from ÂŁ1.5 million in funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and grants from the EsmĂŠe Fairbairn Foundation, the J Paul Getty Jnr Charitable Trust, the Pilsworth Environmental Company and the Barry Amiel and Norman Melburn Trust and has brought in outreach workers to develop the use of collections by community and education groups, conservation work and new websites.

31 Toad Lane was originally a woollen warehouse and the work on the Museum has been designed to preserve the building for future generations, while improving the facilities and ensuring that physical access is improved with a new staircase and lift so that the building can be used by all.

The new access tower includes a lift and makes the building fully accessible for wheelchair users.

The exhibitions in the Museum have been renewed, with the original shop giving visitors a feeling of what would have been there in 1844 and new panels telling the story of co-operation. The story covers developments over 200 years, and includes reference to the modern co-operative movement as well as the co-operators before Rochdale.

The top floor of the Museum, which was removed in an earlier restoration during the 1970s has been reinstated. It will be used as a meeting and education space, replicating

BBC one’s recent series ‘turn Back time’, told the story of Britain’s most valued institution… the family. Using a unique blend of living history and genealogy, modern day British families were taken back in time to the 1900s before being fast-forwarded through almost one hundred years of family life.

he series, filmed on albert road in the Northern seaside town of Morecambe, focused on three families - the taylors, the goldings and the Meadows family. they dressed, cooked, ate, worked and played just as they would have done in five key chapters of the 20th century. street lamps, cars and road markings changed, as did the decor, furniture and technology in the three houses that became their homes.

By the 1970s, the fifth episode of the series, the final family took up residence in albert road. From rochdale, single mum Lisa rhodes together with her two young boys, harrison and daniel, became part of the ever-changing shape of Britain’s family unit. here is Lisa’s first hand account of daily life in the 70’s, along with its strikes, power cuts, women’s liberation… and, of course, tupperware parties!

We all thought we would love that, so we applied.

Ingrid came up all the way from London and asked us all about ourselves.

Then, we waited. Christmas came and went, and in early January, the phone rang… we had been chosen.

One of the highlights for us was having a trip to London for our costume fittings. We went to the National Theatre costume department and it was so exciting; the kids had a ball, racks and racks of fabulous costumes from all eras

- it was amazing. After our fittings we went to ‘Wall to Wall’ production offices where we met the ‘Turn Back Time’ team, who made us feel like royalty, and so welcome - what a great bunch of wonderful people.

Before we knew it, we were filming our ‘back story day’. Adam (who ended up being our camera man) and Rob came and spent the day with us in modern day. They just really recorded us as a single parent family, in a

Day Four and it was breakfast time in the Rhodes Family household… time to put the kettle on… no water! Someone put a note through the door - Harrison read ‘water rationing’ - so we all went to get water from the standpipe outside. I don’t think Harrison was too impressed. While going for the water, he said ‘mum, was this in the contract?’, and then said, ‘mum, did you read it?!’.

Day Five and our journey was nearly over. We had survived, without mobile phones, computers and television… and not missed anything one little bit! And how better to spend our last day in the 80s, than with a royal wedding celebration for Charles and Diana, a fabulous party which meant it was the end of our journey…

We arrived in Morecambe and our first experience of Turning Back Time was driving around in a 1970’s car. It had a choke, no power steering, only four gears, and the braking distance was about three miles! And yes, I stalled it before I even got out of the hotel car park - this was now a reality, we were going back in time.

That evening we all went to a school 1970’s disco and we all had a great time having a boogie to some good old 1970’s tunes.

We were then escorted to Albert Road and we gave up our luxuries, i.e. our mobile phones, handbags and all our worldly goods; all we had were the clothes on our backs.

It was time to move in….

We walked up the stairs (no carpet) and were greeted by Sandra, our landlady. I think my face said it all. I did try to hide my disappointment, but I think it showed. I wondered how I was ever going to spend five days with the kids in this one room, never mind one bedroom… one room! Harrison thought it was fine and a great adventure.

Daniel was just gutted the room only had two games and said ‘it only has two games and I have to survive with that?’; funny for an eight year old… they just don’t realise how lucky they are. We spent the whole day in the bedsit.

I had great joy trying to cook the family meal; there was just no room and trying to make smash was horrendous and I even got lumps in the bisto gravy!

On Day Two, the kids were really excited to spend a day in a school and I was off to work in a local café. I really enjoyed it and was thankful to get out of the bedsit for the day. I waved the kids off to school, but was stressing a bit as they were going on the bikes. Back in

bedsit, but I did feel for those single mums who really did have to live like this. However, something I realised very quickly was that in the 70s, neighbours stuck together and looked after each other’s kids. The kids had a ball; playing out on the choppers, playing with the skipping ropes and basically just being kids.

PACKING A PUNCH IN

Rochdale!

Richard Whittaker Ltd is one of many successful businesses in the town and following their success at the Rochdale Business Awards 2011, Style went to find out what goes on inside their impressive factory in Mayfield. On a damp summer’s day, I was delighted to meet Sue & Alan Rigby, who are the driving force behind this exciting and innovative company.

after being made redundant at Fothergill & harvey’s, in the early sixties, alan landed a job at richard Whittaker Ltd in smallbridge and rakewood. Within months, the Md of the time had realised alan’s potential and promoted him to company director.

Raising a young family meant that he was unable to invest as much as he would have liked and he was sidestepped when the MD retired, but finally came to take the reins in 2000 after a management buyout.

Since that time, Alan has led the company into widely differing sectors of the food industry, embracing new technology but investing wisely in people, as well as equipment. His young son, Tom, is now a Director of the company and Alan's brother in law, Les Burrill, is the Works Director.

The company has suffered two major fires since its inauguration in 1962, but from humble beginnings

with just five staff, the company now employs ninetythree, has a turnover of over £6m and is on target to take it to £10m by 2013.

Upon my visit, I was impressed to see Alan driving a forklift truck around his 83,000 sq ft facility.

In conversation he explained, “I don’t ever ask a staff member to do something which I haven't done myself”.

On my walk around the factory I could see the company's expertise in handling a wide varieties of ingredients – including allergens, spices, flour, gluten free products, together with ingredients for the specialist Chinese, Afro-Caribbean and Indian & Asian market.

Their continued success comes from offering an extensive assortment of packaging formats; customers old and new are delighted with this “one stop shop” facility. Work is flooding in for the company, merely

by recommendation from both existing customers and suppliers.

All of the staff have a pride in their work and Alan rightly offers praise where praise is due, valuing the contribution made by the cleaner as much as that of his fellow directors – it’s teamwork that makes the dream work!

Following on from the Gallery’s successful Victorian Stories exhibition in 2010, this is a chance to see Edwardian paintings from the Art Gallery collection alongside costume, objects and ephemera of the time from the Museum and Local Studies collections.

Featured artists include Luke Fildes, Jessica Hayllar, Hubert Von Herkomer, Edward Atkinson Hornel and Walter Sickert.

This exhibition tells the story of the origins of the Co-operative Movement and how it started right here in Rochdale focusing on the lives of the local men who went on to become the Rochdale Pioneers. It will also showcase the exciting plans for the £3 million extension of the historic Toad Lane’s Pioneer Museum which will reopen in time to celebrate 2012 as the Year of the Co-operatives.

Laura Ford uses soft materials, fabrics and found objects to create contemporary figurative sculptures which are often endearing, but somehow unnerving at the same time. This exhibition features three of Ford’s sculptures inspired by stories of exploration and adventure, in particular Robert Falcon Scott’s Antarctic expedition a century ago and the German artist Joseph Beuys’ story of surviving a WWII plane crash. The works are on loan from the Imogen and Elspeth Turner Collection.

The popular open exhibition for new and established artists, both amateur and professional, who live or work in the borough of Rochdale returns in the autumn. Handing in dates will be 11-15 September 2012.

Gallery One Show Adam Kerfoot-Roberts: 2OCHDALE 5P #LOSE and Abstract

A Century Later On show until 8 Sept 2012 This exhibition of contemporary work from the Art Gallery collection provides a counterpoint to the Edwardian paintings on display in Gallery Two, which themselves were contemporary when the Gallery opened in 1903 and was extended in 1912. It reflects the Gallery’s longstanding tradition of collecting and provides an opportunity to see more recent additions to the collection. Artists include Alan Birch, David Gledhill, Lubaina Himid, Vincent James, Susie MacMurray, Taslim Martin and Paul Rooney.

St. Chad’s Churchwatch Sessions Organised by St Chad’s, Rochdale Parish Church Rochdale’s magnificent Parish Church, located up the 122 steps behind the Town Hall, is the town’s oldest building, telling the story of 1,000 years of local history. With stonework dating back to the 14th century, splendid stained glass including William Morris’s ’Faith, Hope and Charity’ window , the 13th century font where Gracie filed’s was baptised in 1898, the 1786 grave of the dialect poet and political satirist Tim Bobbin, a wall reputed to date back to the pre1066 and stocks for Rochdale’s 1600’s felons.

Guides will be on duty. No charge, but donations towards the upkeep of this splendid heritage building appreciated.

Unless you were hitchhiking with the Mars Explorer, you cannot have failed to notice the wave of patriotic pride that has swept the nation this summer. From the Queen’s Jubilee and through the Olympics the nation has been awash with the red, white and blue of the union flag.

Even though our last major home brand in the car industry disappeared a while ago, we still have plenty to be proud on the automotive front.

JAGUAR XJ Britain has always lead the way in the luxo-barge arena and Rolls Royce’s are basically BMW’s underneath, the same with Bentley and their VW underpinnings, so that leaves just one contender in the arena, the Jaguar XJ. The XJ is the motoring equivalent of a Chicken Tikka Masala, for the concept is British but it is served up by an Indianowned entity. It was designed and built in Britain and is currently one of my favourite cars on sale.

It would have been easy to just evolve the old XJ, incase it scared off the existing Jag clientele, but this new car has an aggressive, modern stance, a beautifully designed and contemporary interior and cutting edge technology under the bonnet.

ARIEL ATOM Much has been said on a certain highrating motoring programme about the Ariel Atom and until you get shoe-horned into one, it’s hard to see what the fuss is about -

for what is basically a go-kart with a 245bhp engine attached.

There’s no special aerodynamic gadgetry on the exoskeleton body and to be honest I can’t remember seeing a radio on the sparse interior - but you won’t need one. The soundtrack from the Honda V-Tec engine and the world’s most engaging driving experience is all you need for what really is motoring nirvana.

I can understand most people being put off by the £30k+ price tag of a car with no windscreen, but I urge any petrol head with even the merest hint of octane in their vains to try one on an experience day or such like. But be warned, for once you have tried the Ariel, you will be hooked!

184bhp and a sprint to 60mph time of 7 seconds, combined with a suspension and handling pack worthy of the Cooper name make this one of the most compelling hot hatches available, even if it isn’t the quickest. Interior space isn’t anything to shout home about, but the smart people won’t worry about that, as they will be sat in the driver’s seat!

SERVES 2 RED PEPPER CRUST 1 red pepper – roasted till golden brown, skinned and de-seeded 1 clove garlic 50g dry white breadcrumbs 50g parmesan cheese 50g butter

1) For the red pepper crumb, blend the pepper flesh and garlic together until smooth. Add the breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese and butter and blend to a paste.

Place on a sheet of greaseproof paper, cover with another piece and roll out to 2mm thick. Cut into squares and place in a fridge to firm.

CHIVE BUTTER SAUCE 50ml white wine 50ml white wine vinegar 50ml whipping cream 100g cubed chilled butter 1 tablespoon chopped chives

2) For the chive butter sauce, place the wine and vinegar in a small pan and reduce by half, add the cream and reduce again, slowly add the butter, whisking as you do until emulsified. Season to taste and keep warm.

Splash olive oil 10 slices bury black pudding 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 x 180g fillets of brill, skinned and boned 10 scallops (diver caught if possible) 25g fresh samphire Pinch 5 spice powder

3) Heat the olive oil in a non stick pan, season the fish and seal presentation side down first until golden brown, then turn over and seal the other side. Remove the fish from the pan, top with the crust and place in a hot oven 180°c to cook through.

4) When ready to serve, drizzle the black pudding slices with olive oil and place in the oven to heat through.

5) Place the non-stick pan back on the heat, add some more olive oil and seal the scallops until golden on both sides. Remove from the pan, add the samphire and 5 spice powder to the pan and toss briefly.

6) Once all the components are hot and ready, arrange the black pudding and scallops on a plate, add the samphire and top with the brill. Finally, add the chives to the sauce and spoon around.

SUDDENLY AT HOME St. Ann’s Players

Francis Durbridge's thriller, set in 1971, is from a genre that is not often performed today, so it was interesting that St Ann’s Players had chosen to present such a 'classic' piece. It may have been written over forty years ago, but debut director Dave Stopford and his backstage team did an excellent job in managing to captivate a modern day audience.

Suddenly at Home is a good old-fashioned 'whodunit', with many twists and turns. Tim Keiley gave an excellent performance as the scheming charmer, Glenn Howard. Hooked on buying overcoats, he wants only two things in his life, his wife's money and another woman to spend it with.

Howard works out a seemingly foolproof plan to murder his depressed wife Maggie (Lynda Kent) and implicate her former lover, detective storywriter Sam Blaine, confidently played by Ian Mansfield; while he escapes from the boredom of his life to

Bermuda. For the plan to succeed, Howard needs the help of the enigmatic, drug-taking Sheila, a flamboyant actress, strongly portrayed

by Sue Howarth. However, can he rely on her to become the new woman in his life or does she have a plan of her own?

Joanne Frost is convincing as Maggie’s sister Helen Tenby, and au pair Ruth Belcher, played by Annette Nodwell, added to the complications of the plot. In their individual and very different ways, Kevin Lawman, as Inspector Appleton and the formidable David Fielding, as Remick, attempt to unravel the mystery and to foil Glenn’s schemes.

All contribute to a story of fatal attraction, sexual intrigue, murder, mystery and mayhem. A tale of high drama, desperate excitement and riveting suspense. n Colin Meredith

YOUNG ROCHDALE STARS SHINING BRIGHTLY

StarStruckTalent Theatre School & Agency performed their first show at The Gracie Fields Theatre this summer, to an audience of over two hundred family and friends.

Over fifty children performed sketches and musical numbers from popular musicals such as Annie, Les Miserables, The Rocky Horror Show and Grease. Every child in the theatre school impressed, as some pupils made their debut stage appearance.

The very youngest theatre school pupils brought the house down, as they performed a sketch entitled ‘Old Folks Home’, in which they all convincingly emulated pensioners struggling with old age.

Other performances included a moving sequence from Les Miserables, by the more experienced students and memorable solos from Laura Chisnall and Elizabeth Kershaw.

The first half ended with a rocking performance from the award winning Rochdale Borough Youth Band, who were special guests for the evening, under the leadership of Eric Landon.

There were many impressive comic performances including Elizabeth Gratton and Megan Fielden as two bridesmaids in Syrupy and Ben Maguire and Max Hartle in Skungpoomery.

SPRINGHILL HOSPICE NEWS NEW SERVICE UP N’ RUNNING The new Hospice at Home service provides flexible and responsive palliative nursing care to patients at the end of life who have indicated that they would like to spend their last days in their own home.

The service is designed to work alongside, and in addition to current services provided by the District Nurse team, Home Care providers and the Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care team.

In addition to the 24 hour Hospice at Home service, Springhill Hospice at Home Plus, in partnership with RMBC Adult Services, provides a night sitting service for patients at the end of life, where additional support during the day is not necessary.

Sheila Johnson, Director of Clinical Services said: “We are so pleased to finally be on the road with our pilot scheme. This extension to our services has improved the choices available to patients at the end of life. The service has only been in place for two months and we have already supported more than twenty patients and we have received extremely positive feedback from families”.

“We are also very pleased that we now have a new Hospice at Home support group, who are distributing collection boxes throughout the borough and organising numerous events and collections to help to pay for this extension to our services. The group meet at 2pm on the third Tuesday of every month at The Crimble, Rochdale, if anybody is interested in supporting this invaluable new service.”

Midnight Walk

Over 400 walkers took part in this year’s Midnight Walk and although there is still a way to go with collecting the money, it is looking like in the region of £30,000 will have been raised for the Hospice.

Jenny McAlpine who plays Fizz in Coronation Street came along on the evening and surprised the walkers when they were doing their aerobic warm up by getting on stage and joining in! Jenny said she was “amazed” at the turn out and the atmosphere on the evening.

Alison McGuigan, Fundraising Lead said “We were so pleased with the evening and how it went, and the total raised is fantastic. There are so many people to thank – the Middleton Arena and the Heywood Civic Centre, the White Hart pub, Castleton Community Centre and The Norton Grange Hotel. Also, our volunteers and the MT Heads Motorcycle Group who were very impressive and helped all of our walkers feel so safe. And last, but certainly not least, our walkers – who made the night the success it was.”

Rochdale Town Hall played host to a concert celebrating the works of Edwin Waugh.

Recovery Republic recently opened its doors, at 63-65 York Street, Heywood, after the building had undergone a major refurbishment.

Dialect performer Sid Calderbank was joined on stage by Mark Dowding and Alyson Brailsford, accompanied by the Monzino Music string quartet.

The event was staged by Rochdale Libraries, as a finale to their week of celebrations for the International Year of the Co-operatives.

THE MND CLASSIC

Boots, Rochdale, teamed up Michelle Matthews from Ladies only Ltd Health Club, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer care.

The Fitness Wobble event took place in Boots, in The Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre and raised £155 for the charity.

Thankfully, rain and wind did not deter the 160 golfers taking part in this year’s MND Classic. The annual event, held at Manchester Golf Club, raises money for the MND Association in memory of Ian McCarrick.

Janice McCarrick and Rita Bottomley once again organised a fantastic day and raised £7000 for the MND Association; a charity close to Janice’s heart after 78

the cruel disease claimed the life of her son Ian when he was 32.

Janice was keen to mention the tremendous support of everyone who braved the weather to take part, those who helped behind the scenes and those who came along later and danced the night away.

Creative Carvings

Pupils from Matthew Moss High School recently received a grant from the Rochdale In Bloom committee. The students decided to spend the grant in Springfield Park, in recognition of all the outdoor learning activities that the school carries out in the park.

Mr Roy Down, Environmental Technician at Matthew Moss, approached Lancashire and Cheshire Woodcarvers, who are based in Rochdale, and asked them if they could design some wood plaques. The plaques, featuring carvings of animals, have been placed around the medieval mere in the park for people to admire. Mr Terry Costigan from the Countryside Rangers said: “they make a fantastic addition to the park and add to the many wonderful improvements taking place”.

FEEL GOOD FESTIVAL

Thousands of people packed into Rochdale town centre for the annual Feel Good Festival, to enjoy an array of music, food and family entertainment.

The Butts turned into large food market, which proved a hit with residents and visitors from across the region. Celebrity chefs, including Jean-Christophe Novelli, Aazam Ahmad and Andrew Nutter created some magic in the

kitchen, with their live cookery masterclasses.

Musical artists entertained the crowds at a variety of local venues, culminating with Martha Reeves and the Vandellas on the main stage next to the Town Hall.

The Newtown Club (Nixon St, Castleton) are hosting a charity night in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, on Friday 12th October, from 8pm - entrance fee £2 (pay on the door). Enjoy an evening of music, stand up bingo, raffle, football cards and an auction, whilst helping to raise much needed funds for the charity. Everyone is welcome.

Over two thousand people turned out in the sunshine for the launch of the new Rochdale Leisure Centre. Crowds gathered to tour the £10.8 million centre and meet Coronation Street stars Debbie Rush and Sam Aston.

Debbie, who plays Anna Windass in the ITV1 soap, was certainly impressed with the venue: “It’s a really fabulous new centre, a real asset for Rochdale and the local community. I’m impressed! It’s good to see so many young people and families here together, enjoying all different kinds of sports … there’s a real buzz about the place.”

And Sam Aston (Chesney) said he couldn’t wait to return: “It was awesome, the facilities are superb and I’m looking forward to coming and using the centre myself!”

As well as taking a look around, visitors got free taster sessions in activities including mountain biking, boxing, basketball, swimming, zumba, street dancing, spinning, trampolining, water aerobics and underwater hockey.

Located on Entwisle Road in the town centre, the centre features an eight-lane 25 metre swimming pool, a 17 metre learner pool, two fitness suites, dance studios, a four-court sports hall and sauna and steam rooms.
