MeSSage from the eDitoR

Dear Readers,

Welcome to Style’s spring edition…

Spring is the perfect season to explore Rochdale’s parks, lakes and countryside… hopefully the sun will be shining by the time you read this! Our borough is home to a surprising variation of wildlife – take a look at the stunning pictures sent in by our readers and local photographers on pages 32-33… they’re sure to inspire you to get out ‘n’ about.

Rochdale’s community has shown incredible strength, kindness and determination since the devastating Boxing Day floods. It has been heartwarming to witness how local people and businesses have supported each other through the challenging times.

The floods affected many independent retailers across the borough, but most have now reopened. Please support Rochdale’s shops and businesses, who you can find out about in this edition. There are so many fantastic and unique retailers in the town and they need your support now more than ever.

It’s true that Rochdale has received it’s share of bad press recently, but it’s up to us, as a community, to challenge that. Rochdale has plenty of ‘good news’ stories and there are so many reasons to love our borough. At Style we’re determined to remain positive and upbeat about our brilliant town and prove that Rochdale is a great place to live.

This edition is packed with exclusive interviews, including comedian Rob Beckett, Claire Minett from Channel Four’s The Undateables and top Rochdale author Trevor Hoyle.

Our feature on Roger Fenton - a pioneer of photography makes for a very interesting read, as does our delve into the history of Champness Hall. Plus all the usual features are back - sport, motoring, dining, recipes, fashion, beauty, community, events and much more.

I love to hear from our readers, so please join our Facebook page (facebook.com/stylemagazine) or feel free to get in touch with any comments, photographs or good news stories – email: ruth@rochdalestyle.com.

We’re also on the lookout for part-time salespeople at Style so drop me an email if you would like to know more.

HUNDREDS ‘GO DIGITAL’ THANKS TO ROCHDALE FESTIVAL Rochdale Digital Festival was a huge success, with over 700 people visiting Number One Riverside on Saturday 27th February. DIGITAL DISCOVERY: Councillor Daalat Ali with Jennie McAlpine.

ADVICE: Volunteers ready to help visitors with their IT problems.

The festival, spread over two floors, was aimed at de-mystifying technology, showing how useful it can be and the career opportunities it can bring. Coronation Street actress Jennie McAlpine, best known for playing feisty ‘Fiz’ in the ITV1 soap, called in to meet visitors. Speaking live on BBC Radio Manchester she said she was very impressed: “I do use digital technology; I’ve got a smartphone, a tablet and I tweet, but there is so much more to learn and technology is

moving so fast these days. Now I have a little boy I’m really thinking I need to know more and I’m encouraging everyone to do the same.” More than 30 businesses took part, including Google, BBC iPlayer, BT, Hive Manchester, Community Arts Northwest, Boots, Marks & Spencer and the RAF. The festival was organised by Rochdale Borough Council and sponsored by specialist IT provider Optevia.

If you missed the festival, it’s not too late to get help with digital technology. Just visit any local library. For details of your nearest library call 0300 303 8876.

AUTHOR TREVOR HOYLE

“The Last Gasp is a landmark in the emerging field of eco-fiction. As the author points out in his epilogue, no reduction in atmospheric oxygen has been recorded on planet Earth – yet. But if and when that happens, no magic will reverse the consequences.” Washington Post

Rochdale author, Trevor Hoyle, worked as an actor in television and theatre before becoming a full-time writer. He wrote and presented a weekly arts programme for Granada Television where he also produced documentary features for Granada Reports. He has also written for BBC radio, winning the Radio Times Drama Award with his first play GIGO.

S

ince the mid-seventies Trevor Hoyle has published over 20 novels as well as many short stories (winning the Transatlantic Review prize). His novel The Last Gasp was a Doubleday Book Club Selection in the US; a revised and updated edition is due to be published by Quercus on 7 April. Style: The Last Gasp was first published in 1983, but an updated version of the novel is soon to be released. How much has changed between this version and the original?

8

www.rochdalestyle.com

Trevor: The theme of the book, and its central plot, hasn’t changed. It’s the story of our planet becoming polluted through its oceans, which gradually reduces the oxygen content in the atmosphere to less than half. Imagine the human race living at 15,000 feet on the side of a mountain and literally gasping for breath – hence the title. But the new version develops this idea and projects it over thirty years into the future. Big corporations and the military get in on the act and become obsessed with waging environmental war employing WCD –

Weapons of Climate Degradation. Instead of trying to save the planet, it seems as if they’re hell-bent on destroying it. At the centre of all this is a marine biologist, Gavin Chase, who writes a bestseller titled One Minute to Midnight, in an attempt to expose what’s really going on. To find out if he succeeds or not, you’ll have to read the book. How long did it take you to rewrite? The first version back in 1983 took me almost four years, a year of which I

spent talking to climate scientists before starting work on the book itself. The thing you have to realise is that everything in The Last Gasp is based on scientific fact – it could actually happen. I rather foolishly thought that revising and updating the book would take a year to eighteen months. It’s taken over three years, in fact, so altogether, what with background research, revision and editing, promoting it and so on, I’ll have spent nearly ten years of my life on this project. The plot sounds as though it would make an incredible film - is that what you’re hoping? There’s been some film interest shown already but it’s early days yet. I actually think it would work better on television than as a one-off feature film. Because the book stretches over a forty-year time scale, the story would be better told as a ten-part TV mini-series. And it would need some spectacular special effects to convey scenes like Las Vegas engulfed by floodwater, giant icebergs the size of the Isle of Wight smashing into ocean liners, and a new species of mutant humans breaking out of a secret government lab and running amok.

What else are you working on at the moment? Now that The Last Gasp is finally published, I’m going to try something completely different. I’ve always wanted to write a novel about the Fifties – the era of jiving at the Carlton, coffee bars, Teddy Boys with their DA haircuts, long drape jackets and drainpipe trousers. And of course the fantastic music. The provisional title is “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Diaries”. Who is your favourite author? To pick just one is impossible. Authors I admire include Graham Greene, Evelyn Waugh, William Faulkner, George Orwell, and perhaps a couple you won’t have heard of, Gerald Kersh and Patrick Hamilton. My all-time favourite science fiction writer is Philip K Dick, who wrote Blade Runner. What do you love most about your job? It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was 9 years old. I feel incredibly lucky that using my imagination and creating characters and stories has enabled me to make a living since I was in my twenties. You can’t ask for more.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers? Whenever I’m asked this (which is a lot) I always say that the one indispensable trait for a writer is to be bloodyminded. That’s to say, never give up, never give in. Millions of people would love to be a published author, but most will fall by the wayside after one or two disappointments. Be the one who keeps going, no matter what. The Last Gasp is available from Kelsall’s bookshop in Littleborough, No. 10 on Baillie Street, and Touchstones in The Esplanade. Also available as an e-book. Ruth Meredith COMPETITION! Trevor has kindly given us a signed copy of The Last Gasp to give away to one lucky Style reader. To be in with a chance of winning just email competitions@rochdalestyle.com or write to 290 Edenfield Road, Rochdale, OL11 5AG, with your name, address & tel no, mentioning 'Last Gasp competition'. Catering manager Andy McNamara from Rochdale is the dining train manager for the railway’s Dining With Distinction brand which offers luxury fine dining on the train. Style Magazine were doubly delighted to find that local family business Lords Caterers of Whitworth provide the dining service in their first class Pullman style carriages, which were pulled by the iconic locomotive. Lords are in their second year of providing the fine dining experience on a regular basis (there are 100 trains this year) with 23 new menus to sample most of which are silver served at the table. Director Christine Brownlie said: “The advance bookings are higher this year as

a third new carriage is being added to some of the journeys increasing the total of diners to 138 on some trips. Catering on the railway fits in nicely with our regular clientele for whom we have been providing a service for the past 82 years; we are now in our 5th generation of the Lord family catering.” The chef on the Flying Scotsman was Gordon Brownlie, Director of Lords Caterers, and the current President of the Rochdale Scottish Society.

COMEDIAN

ROB BECKETT

Style caught up with Rob ahead of his date at Middleton Arena…

Style: When did you first realise you wanted to be a comedian? Rob: When I realised I was rubbish at all my other jobs and my bosses told me I was a joke in appraisals.

What can we expect from your ‘Mouth of the South’ tour? I will be funny and silly for 90 mins - it's a leave your worries at the door type of gig. I'm not gonna be talking politics!

What has been your most memorable moment from the tour so far? I had a great Sunday roast dinner in Lincoln.

Where do you find inspiration for your stand-up? People watching always makes me laugh. We, as humans, are a right old weird bunch.

Which comedians make you laugh? Tom Allen is in great form at the moment. He always cracks me up.

Award winning stand-up comic Rob Beckett brings his new show to Middleton Arena later this year.

The smiley Londoner and star of television shows including ‘Live at the Apollo’, ‘Mock the Week’ and ‘8 out of 10 Cats’ will be on stage at the arena on Wednesday 1 June during his ‘Mouth of the South’ tour, which has been extended after last year’s dates sold out.

Beckett started performing stand-up in 2009 and quickly enjoyed success in the new comedian competitions, winning four in his first year. He made his debut at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2012 and went on to finish as a runner up in ‘So You Think You're Funny’ and won the ‘Amused Moose Laugh Off’, which earned him an invite to perform at comedy festivals in Australia.

Beckett specialises in observational stories which rely on his quick wit and self-depreciating humour. During his Middleton Arena show he says he’ll be taking on the big issues “like Kit Kats and flatbread!” A regular on our screens in other shows including ‘Celebrity Juice’ he was also the resident comedian in the jungle, presenting ‘I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’. 12

www.rochdalestyle.com

Best and worst aspects of your job? Best is the freedom to do whatever I want. Worst is unsocial hours and late night motorway diversions.

How do you deal with annoying hecklers? I've got a sniper in every venue I play.

You presented I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here Now up until last year, but will we ever catch you in the jungle as a contestant? If you ever see me doing 'I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here' it will be because I'm in severe financial difficulty!

What advice would you give to aspiring comedians?

Work hard, gig whenever you can and eat vegetables.

Rob Beckett visits Middleton Arena at 8pm on Wednesday 1 June. Tickets (£14) are on sale now from www.middletonarena.com by phoning 0300 303 8633 or from www.seetickets.com. Or you can buy in person at Heywood Civic Centre.

Roger Fenton, self portrait

ROGER FENTON From Crimble to Crimea Roger Fenton was born at Crimble Hall in Bamford in 1819 and was a pioneer of photography. His father, John Fenton, was Rochdale’s first MP; while John’s father, Joseph, had made a fortune in land, textiles and banking, owning the huge Hooley Bridge Mills in Heywood. Roger attended university in London and then went to Paris to study painting but was fascinated in the new art of photography. He returned to Britain and began a career as a solicitor. Roger carried on painting but became interested in a new photographic process called calotype which allowed multiple prints to be made from one image. Officers of the 4th Light Dragoons

In 1847, Roger and a group of fellow enthusiasts formed the Photographic Club, the same year that he married Grace Maynard. They went on to have three daughters. By 1851, Roger gave up his law practice and became a full-time photographer. Roger was the first Royal photographer and took pictures of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their many children. Soon after, the Royal couple took up photography as a hobby and Roger was commanded to set up a dark room at Windsor Castle. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert

a naval ship, taking with him a converted horse-drawn van as a mobile darkroom. Inside this vehicle were several cameras and lenses, 700 glass plates, chests of chemicals, as well as developing baths. The van also acted as sleeping and living accommodation for Roger and his two assistants. Unable to Marcus Sparling seated on Fenton's photographic van, Crimea, 1855

In 1852 Roger visited Russia and took some extraordinary photographs of Kiev and the Kremlin in Moscow. He went on to help found the Photographic Society of London (now the Royal Photographic Society) becoming its secretary. Ironically, it was the war against Russia in the Crimea where Roger’s next project took place. Under the patronage of Queen Victoria and the War Minister and financed by Manchester publishers Thomas Agnew & Son, Roger headed in 1855 to the Crimea on Crimble Hall - birthplace of Roger Fenton

to perfect his photography and travelled around Britain taking pictures of landscapes and still life. He took photographs of some of our finest cathedrals and castles, as well as many of the Ribble Valley where his family owned much of the land. Amazingly, in 1863 Roger sold off all his photographic equipment and most of his negatives and returned to the law to work as a barrister on the Northern Circuit. He continued to be a member of the Royal Photographic Society and was awarded their prestigious Prince Consort Medal in 1866 for his important work. Roger died on August 8th 1869 aged only 50 at his home in Potter’s Bar, Hertfordshire after a short illness. He had never been in good health since returning from the Crimea. In 2001, Sotherbys held an auction featuring 15 of Roger’s photographs; one, entitled ‘The Billiard Room’ was expected to sell for about £25,000. It sold for over ten times that figure at an astonishing £278,500! In 2004, a blue plaque was unveiled at Crimble Hall to commemorate the life of this pioneer photographer. It is clearly visible to the left of the front entrance of the renowned restaurant that is now based there.

take action shots which in those days needed a long exposure time, Roger took photographs of the battle sites, the harbour at Balaclava, the army camps and portraits of the troops. Unfortunately, Roger’s van was visible for miles in the stark Crimean landscape and was a target for Russian gunmen who assumed that it was an ammunition wagon! Happily, Roger – despite suffering badly from the dreaded cholera - returned safely from the Crimea with 360 photographs. Over 300 of these were exhibited in London and other cities. The photographs were also shown to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

To modern eyes, Roger Fenton’s photographs look so impressive because he achieved such perfect balance and clarity in his pictures, whether they were portraits; landscapes; still life; buildings or his famous Crimean War scenes. His skill and patience with such large and heavy equipment was extraordinary. This was when being a photographer meant also being something of a chemist, technician and stage manager. Next time you use your phone or digital camera, remember Roger Fenton! Thanks to Local Studies

(Rochdale and Heywood).

FUTURE CLASSICS

Depreciation is possibly one of the biggest costs of ownership involved with any car. A question that occurs quite a bit - especially when people who are bored start looking through the classifieds or the world’s favourite online auction site - is what cars could you pick up for a song now and never see the value drop under what was paid? WELL, AFTER A TOUCH OF CRYSTAL BALL GAZING AND A FEW NIGHTS SURFING THE WEB, I’VE COME UP WITH THREE CARS THAT I THINK WILL BE IN HIGH DEMAND IN 2026, AND EVEN IF THEY AREN’T YOU WILL AT LEAST ENJOY THEM IN THE MEANTIME! FORD SPORTKA

Have you noticed how some cars virtually disappear from the road overnight? Take the first generation Ford Ka, once one of the most common cars out there, especially popular as first cars but now nearly extinct. Even rarer is the 1.6-litre

20

www.rochdalestyle.com

SportKa, the hot-hatch variant of the popular supermini. The original Ford Ka was one of my favourite cars of its era, it might have been basic and powered by an engine that could trace its roots back to the Ford Anglia, but it was hugely fun. Add some tweaks by Ford to the suspension, a larger 1.6litre and in 2003 Ford brought us the 94bhp SportKa.

There is no doubt in my mind that in ten years’ time good examples of the SportsKa are going to be changing hands for quite serious money. Check carefully for a full history and check for corrosion, especially around the fuel filler cap that has killed so many Fords of this era and you should be onto a winner.

on more important things before the cloth samples arrived at the factory!

SUBARU IMPREZA TURBO 2000

The mid-nineties were halcyon days for rallying and one of the stars of the show was the Subaru Impreza, affectionately known as the ‘Scooby’ amongst enthusiasts. And whilst you could buy a sensible four door saloon version with a 1.6 engine, it was the souped-up Turbo 2000 everyone really wanted and the car that led to the WRX models that went on to dominate the rally world. Designed to cope with loose gravel rally stages, the handling and drive train makes the WRX possibly the best handling saloon car of its generation. Power delivery through the four wheel drive system makes a full bore start of the line feel like a rocket launch. The interior really doesn’t do the rest of the car justice as obviously the budget had been spent

Prices start at around £2,500 for a light project and this will only go north as desirability and interest rises. Check any potential purchase has not been in a serious accident beforehand and check the chassis number with the enthusiast websites to ensure the car is the genuine article and not a look-a-like.

£2,000 should easily find you a tidy example, which if you keep in fine fettle will never be worth any less. Being a Toyota the engines are bullet-proof if treated to the proper maintenance schedule, however check carefully for rust underneath, especially around the rear cross member where owners have reported problems.

TOYOTA MR2 MKIII

Whilst many profess the earlier incarnations of the Mazda MX-5 as the last pure sports cars, Toyota was still producing a fun, light, mid-engine sports car right up to 2006. The third generation of the MR2 was arguably the best thanks to its low-slung open top body, a welcome absence of nannying electronic wizardry and the rorty 140bhp 1.8-litre petrol engine, the same of which was used to power the Lotus Elise. Even on a crisp bright winter’s day, there is no better experience than cranking the heaters up, dropping the roof and finding some twisty country roads in the car that would mark the end of Toyotas involvement in the sports car market for nearly a decade.

On a personal note, how highly do I rate the third generation MR2? Well there is currently a red 54-plate model sat on our drive, or at least there would be if my wife hadn’t commandeered it as her daily driver, so much has she fell for its charms! Mark D’Apice www.rochdalestyle.com

CHAMPNESS HALL PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

rochdale people over a certain age will have been to Champness hall sometime in their life for concerts, church services, exhibitions or school events. Situated halfway up Drake Street, Champness hall was built by r. & t. howarth who were responsible for so many of rochdale’s famous buildings after 1900 such as State mill, the Post office, Broadfield hotel and countless others. I was intrigued by the role of this huge building in the life of rochdale and wondered what was going on inside.

Opened on 8th September 1925, Champness Hall takes its name from the famous missionary Thomas Champness. For over 70 years the hall was Rochdale Methodist Mission and the scale of the building reflected the importance of this church in the town. There were already similar large Methodist buildings in Manchester (now the Albert Hall, a music venue) and Central Hall in Bolton. Right from the start, secular events were held at Champness Hall such as classical concerts, cinema shows, community singing and variety nights. Remember that this was before a true 24

mass media; both cinema and radio were in their early days and there were no televisions!

During the Second World War Champness Hall remained open and, over the six years of conflict, Manchester’s Halle Orchestra appeared 16 times. There were also concerts by other orchestras from Bournemouth and Liverpool; famous pianists such as Myra Hess and Solomon and the famous tenor, Richard Tauber. The hall’s activities must have done much to raise morale; one mass singing event was called ‘Cheer Up And Sing!’

In 1947, Gracie Fields appeared at the hall in a live BBC radio broadcast called ‘Gracie’s Working Party’ which featured Rochdale Festival Choir and ‘some Lancashire lads and lasses’!

The Halle Orchestra continued to appear over the post-war years and other regular visitors were the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Fairey Brass Band and many other brass and military bands. Handel’s ‘Messiah’ was often performed just before Christmas and there was an annual ‘Rochdale Sings’ event which involved hundreds of people.

In 1956, Danny Kaye fronted a United Nations Association event in the main hall. Before he came on stage, Rochdale Municipal Grammar School For Girls Choir gave a performance. Danny was so impressed with their singing that he later joined in with them! At the time Danny Kaye was one of the biggest stars in the world, renowned for his comic songs and film roles in Hans Christian Anderson and White Christmas. Rochdale was a stopping off point for him on a 50,000 mile tour of ten countries as the first Ambassador-at-large for the UNICEF charity. Nowadays, a variety of organisations have office space in the building including The Prince’s Trust and The High Level (Northern Trust). There is still an active church at the hall which uses one of the smaller rooms on the ground floor. I sat in the bright and welcoming surroundings of the Forward Together Internet Café on the first floor of the hall and spoke to Tracy Holden from The High Level Northern Trust about Champness Hall. She outlined the exciting plans to restore the hall’s place in the local community and the preparation of a grant application to the Heritage Lottery Fund. The café is another of the town’s gems – a pleasant place with nourishing food at competitive prices, friendly staff and a suite of PC’s which are available to use. It is run as a social enterprise, giving valuable work experience to local people.

Forward Together also have a Play Centre for under 5’s which can also be hired for children’s parties. Tracy then gave me a special guided tour around this extraordinary building. Our journey around the maze of corridors revealed the old Rooftop Restaurant with its grand piano, fully equipped kitchen and fantastic views over the town and the hills. I was also shown function rooms; offices and even a fully furnished flat on the top floor with its own roof garden! The first time that I walked into the empty main hall (also known as the theatre) I was stopped in my tracks. I was standing in Rochdale’s largest indoor venue which has accommodated up to 2000 people. This vast room has a horseshoe shaped balcony which gives excellent sight lines to the stage. I tried to imagine the performances here by Gracie Fields and Danny Kaye. Over the years all sorts of popular performers have played here including Thin Lizzy, Ralph McTell, Josef Locke, Elvis Costello, Ian Dury, Incredible String Band and The Dubliners. Sooty and his ‘owner’ Harry Corbett showed up twice at Rose Queen events in the 1950’s. There were plans for punk legends, The Sex Pistols, to play at the hall in 1976 but the event was cancelled. Wrestling stars such as Mick McManus, Giant Haystacks and Mitzi Mueller have also appeared. In recent years the hall’s role in Rochdale’s

life diminished, but still played host to dozens of choral, orchestral and carol concerts. Many Style readers will remember attending – or indeed taking part in – the extremely popular annual Children’s Voices For Hospice Concerts. I began to appreciate how Champness Hall’s unique role in Rochdale over the past 90 years could be repeated in the future. Apart from the Town Hall, central Rochdale lacks a large venue for concerts, trade shows and other public events. Its setting, only a few minutes walk from the Transport Interchange, gives it an extraordinary advantage for hosting events. If the Town Hall and Hollingworth Lake are the jewels in Rochdale’s crown, then Champness Hall is its sleeping giant ready to fully re-establish itself in the public life of our town. Richard Lysons

Tracy Holden wants to ask Style readers three questions: a) What do you remember of Champness Hall? b) How would you like to see the hall used in the future for the benefit of the community? c) Could you help? The trust will need all sorts of help such as IT, social media, publicity, stewards, events management and handypersons. Email her at champnesshalltrust@outlook.com. www.rochdalestyle.com

ROCHDALE LINGERIE SHOP SCOOPS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD Chantilly won a prestigious ‘Stars Underlines Best Shop Award’ for ‘Excellence and Outstanding Achievement’ in 2015 by Public Vote.

CHANTILLY NOW STOCKISTS OF REVOLUTIONARY CORIN BRA… Corin Lingerie spent over a year creating the perfect bra, working with engineers from the lodz University of technology under the supervision of professor Marek Zadrozony, the head of the Clinic of Breast Diseases and oncology Surgery.

As part of the process, women of a variety of shapes, ages and breast sizes were thermally scanned to pinpoint areas of the body commonly affected by unnecessary pressure and increased discomfort, from poorly constructed and badly fitting bras.

Owner, Marjorie Thompson and the girls were delighted to win the award at the recent star-studded event at the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and would like to sincerely thank all our loyal customers who voted for Chantilly.

Chantilly

Hosted by Strictly star, James Jordan, nearly 300 guests from the intimate apparel, swimwear and legwear industries met for the celebrations sponsored by Underlines Magazine.

The Stars Awards brings together the best stores, shops and e-commerce sites in the UK & Ireland with 27 leading brands nominating finalists for their success in retail.

Heat generated by poorly fitting bra - cups and band too tight.

Reduced heat generated by optimally designed and fitted bra.

The data from thermal imaging and computer models was then used to guide Corin in their designs of a new type of bra. The results are a new manufacturing process and a new improved bra, scientifically proven to help reduce pressure and increase comfort.

Rochdale Council thanks community volunteers

ROCHDALE'S BACK IN BUSINESS

A group of Syrian refugees helped out with the clean-up

The Boxing Day floods were an unprecedented and surreal experience in the borough. A combination of the wettest and warmest December on record, along with over 100ml of rainfall, led to flooding not seen since August 1868. There are over 350 businesses in the Town Centre, including 60 household names and 80 independents shops. In total, 65 businesses were affected by floodwater ingress and over half of those affected were independents. Here, Mark Foxley of Rochdale Town Centre Management reflects on the floods, the businesses affected, their recovery and how the local community rallied together despite the challenging times… “The worst affected areas were The Walk, South Parade, The Butts, and the bottom of Yorkshire Street. The Exchange and Wheatsheaf Shopping Centres were unaffected, in the main it was sole traders and small businesses, many of whom couldn’t get flood insurance. We were out on Boxing Day from 10.30am until 9pm, when most of the water had receded, then every day following right through into the New Year. During that time we visited all properties affected to inform them of the support available.

Support from Rochdale Council was excellent, from a quickly processed initial £500, to three month business rates relief, followed by a flood recovery grant fund and property resilience advice and support… There was fantastic team spirit and everyone pulled together, TCM offered a range of advise from the importance of early contact with insurers, and hygiene awareness, to liaising with the businesses for their skip requirements, provided by the council. Of the 65 businesses affected over half of them

were up and running within a week. A tremendous amount of hard work has taken place since the floods and that is continuing. We’ve seen some really excellent partnership working between the council, ourselves and other agencies and it’s been amazing to see how people have pulled together to get things up and running so quickly. The number of volunteers coming forward was heartwarming too, helping to relocate charities such as Food bank and

Age UK getting them operating again from temporary locations. Part of the process of getting the businesses back up and running has included some fantastic fundraising events, thanks to everyone who helped and contributed to Rochdale Flood Support set up by Howard Wilkinson. Despite the devastation for many, spirits remained high, businesses were helping each other offering temporary accommodation such as Beales and Greg Couzens; The Flying Horse also offered temporary rooms for residents severely affected. The event has built relationships and strengthened the business community. There were eight businesses badly affected, but hopefully in April they’ll all be back to normal, so we urge people to come and support their local shops, restaurants and bars because that support is needed now more than ever. The market is also open, as are the town centre car parks, which have three hours of free parking. Thanks to the opening of the River Roch the floodwater had somewhere to go and it didn't reach the Town Hall and other iconic buildings such as No2 The Esplanade and Touchstones. For all you need to know about Rochdale Town Centre see www.rochdaletowncentre.co.uk.

SPRING FASHION: SPOTLIGHT ON ‘GEEK CHIC’

Channel your inner Ugly Betty or Amy Farrah Fowler this spring... It’s easier than you think, and looks surprisingly good. And it’s a nice contradiction to the perfectly groomed, matching, and let’s face it, completely unrealistic aesthetic which usually appears on the cover of fashion magazines. There are probably a hundred unloved items already lurking in your wardrobe you can dig out and repurpose to follow the geek trend that’s all over the catwalk and the high street.

C

an the physical affect the non physical?

Quite a deep question for a beauty feature I grant you but I wont delve into a philosophical debate on metaphysics - that would be a whole other feature! However I am going to explore the effects of physical massage on the non-physical mind and our sense of wellbeing.

We are mostly aware of the many benefits massage has on our physical aches and pains but this isn’t the only reason you should book in regularly for a massage. Massage can help with non-physical ailments which most of us face in our daily lives including depression, anxiety and insomnia. By affecting the body’s biochemistry, massage increases the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin reducing cortisol (the stress hormone) and lowering our anxiety levels. If high cortisol levels can increase blood sugar levels and blood pressure, reducing cortisol levels massage can reduce blood sugar levels, stress and anxiety and blood pressure… and it feels fantastic too! Massage can soothe muscular tension, aches and pains from tight muscles, a build up of lactic acid in the muscle or tight strains and knots, which is fantastic, especially for sport or gym fanatics. Massage can correct poor posture and improve our two circulatory systems; vascular and lymphatic. The vascular circulatory system, if sluggish, can result in cold hands and feet and varicose veins. Massage can help to stimulate blood flow and improve circulation in the body. Specialist techniques in massage can work on the second circulatory system in the body, the lymphatic system. Lymphatic drainage massage works on stimulating muscles to push toxins away from vital organs and encourage it to be cleared from the body. If our muscles are sedentary and sluggish so is our lymphatic system. SO WHICH MASSAGE IS BEST FOR YOU? There are several types of massage available, the most popular being Swedish, Hot stone and Aromatherapy. SWEDISH MASSAGE is a deep tissue massage developed and performed to reduce tension

38

and release knots within the muscle groups; although firm it is still relaxing and extremely beneficial. Swedish massage improves circulation and increases the level of oxygen in the blood. It releases stresses and strains in the muscles improving our flexibility and movement.

Lavender and Chamomile for instance, eases feelings of nervousness, irritability and apprehension. Aromatherapy massage is flowing and stimulating; it desensitizes nerve endings, calming the body, and has all the amazing physical affects of other massage too.

HOT STONE MASSAGE involves the placement of warm basalt stones (which are smooth to the touch) on multiple pressure points around your body - even tiny stones will be placed between the toes.

SO THERE YOU HAVE IT… massage, although physical, can have a profound affect on our mental wellbeing, by improving oxygen supply to our brain and other vital organs and sending us into a deep sense of relaxation. By improving serotonin and dopamine levels, the two ‘feel good’ neurotransmitters, massage can also improve our mental wellbeing.

HOT STONE MASSAGE uses a variety of strokes and techniques using the stones and hands. The heat of the stones immediately speeds up circulation and soothes aches and pains. Your therapist may alternate between hot basalt stones and much colder, marble stones. AROMATHERAPY MASSAGE uses specific natural essential oils extracted from plants, flowers and fruits to enhance the massage experience. With the correct blend of oils the massage therapist can work on your mental wellbeing as well as your physical ailments.

Fairytale Weddings ON A BUDGET

Over the next few pages you will find many local independent retailers and venues, which all provide a top quality Style-approved service. But first, we’ve put together some money saving tips and ideas, which will help you to plan your big day for less, without compromising on style. START WITH THE VENUE Most wedding venues and even some wedding suppliers will give you a generous discount if you avoid peak times of year. Getting hitched mid-week can also cut the cost of the reception venue by up to half. Look for local venues to cut transport costs, both on the day & during the preparations.

D.I.Y Save a fortune by making your own invitations, decorations and favours. Handmade is very much the trend these days. We love Hobby Craft’s ideas library (hobbycraft.co.uk), which has hundreds of DIY craft ideas. SHOP LOCALLY Keep an eye out for local sales and special offers. Independent retailers and service providers greatly value your support and will often go that extra mile to make sure you have the perfect day. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Keep in mind that you don't need to stick to convention. Do things a little differently… have a buffet or barbeque instead of a sit-down meal or make a playlist of your favourite songs instead of booking a DJ. Plan your wedding as you’d like it and don’t worry too much about what you ‘should’ be doing. PICK SEASONAL BLOOMS Style asked Carole from Flower & the Glory, in Littleborough, for her top wedding flower tips… “Try not to be over-reliant on Pinterest-type images. Useful as they are, they can create unrealistic expectations as to seasonal availability and budget. Your florist will guide you towards achieving your designs within your budget. Every wedding is unique and your flowers will reflect your own personality. You might already have quite fixed ideas about what you would like, but try to keep an open mind to other possibilities. A good florist will hold a detailed consultation with you to fully understand the look you are hoping to achieve, and advise whether it is feasible at your chosen date. Think also about how you would like to decorate the wedding reception and seek advice on what will suit the venue, be it city-slick or country house in style. Bear in mind the height of the room - shabby chic jam jars will be lost under a high ceiling! Your florist will be able to guide you on how best to get maximum value and impact from your floral designs. Whatever you choose, you will have a lasting affection for your flowers - the floral equivalent of ‘our tune!’ ” 44

INSPECTOR DRAKE AND THE BLACK WIDOW St Ann’s Players recent production by David Tristam was billed as a comedy, however it soon becomes clear to the audience that this is no ordinary comic ‘whodunnit’. This very funny spoof of detective thrillers had the audience rolling with laughter from start to finish by a talented cast put together by director Kevin Lawman. To begin to describe the plot would be mission impossible as the audience were led one way and then another. The setting is a country house and starts with the discovery of the body of John Johnson dressed as a woman with a huge sword in his back. As the plot unravels the body count rises along with the laughter. Dave Stopford and Peter Dignan as Inspector Drake and Sergeant Plod proved to be a formidable partnership as

they successfully extracted every ounce of laughter from this clever comedy. From the start when Sergeant Plod arrived in a box having recently been posted here, to describing the purchase of his pet spider ‘on the web’ we knew this was no ordinary comedy. Drake and Plod were supported by three strong performances from Sue Howarth as the maid, Joanne Frost as Lady Devonshire

and Annette Nodwell as the triplets. Yes you read that correctly the triplets! Proving how bizarre this play was. The actors were complemented by an impressive set with effective lighting and sound from the St Ann’s Players production team. It’s a real shame this production has been and gone because it would definitely be a recommended must-see. Colin Meredith

Their first production of 2016, comedy Looking for Love, runs from 26th -29th April - CALL 01706 710033 or 07512315715 for TICKETS.

A TALE OF TWO CITIES Rochdale Musical Theatre Company (formally known as Rochdale Amateur Operatic Society) recently staged Jill Santoriello’s musical of the Dickens classic, A Tale of Two Cities.

The production was a North West premiere and RMTC did not disappoint. I’m sure many audience members joined me in forgetting they were watching an amateur production, with the cast, scenery and costumes all up to professional standards, a credit to the Company and director Howard G Raw. Peter Norris was exceptional as the male lead, Sydney Carton, with brilliant stage presence and sincerity in his character. Phil Swift played the dashing Charles Darnay, with

Rachel Brierley as his love interest Lucie Manette. Their romance was sweet and believable, with superb acting and singing skills from both. Rachel’s beautiful voice is sure to result in plenty more leading lady roles. Dawn Leigh took the role of Madame DeFarge and also narrated the production, helping to explain the plot twists and turns. She stole the show with her phenomenal rendition of ‘Out of Sight’. Martin Bradbury also gave a strong performance as Madame DeFarge’s husband Ernest DeFarge and John

Huyton deserves a mention for his honest portrayal of Dr Manette. There were far too many other characters to mention, but there wasn’t a single weak link in the entire production. Richard Lord deserves credit for his superb musical direction of the large chorus and 10-piece orchestra. RMTC’s next production will be Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at their new venue, Heywood Civic Centre, next February. Ruth Meredith www.rochdalestyle.com

TOMBERRY AND ROSEMARY FOCCACIA A FABULOUS BREAD RECIPE WHICH IS SIMPLE TO MASTER. IF YOU CAN’T GET HOLD OF THE MICRO TOMBERRIES, SUBSTITUTE VINE TOMATOES OR ALTERNATIVELY, WHY NOT TRY A BLACK PUDDING AND LANCASHIRE CHEESE VARIETY INSTEAD. MAKES 2 INGREDIENTS 1Kg strong bread flour 6 Teapoons dried yeast 6 Teaspoons salt 750ml Water 4 Tablespoon olive oil Extra flour for dusting 1 Punnet yellow tomberries 1 Punnet red tomberries Few sprigs of fresh rosemary Olive oil for dressing Freshly ground sea salt

METHOD Place the flour, yeast and salt in a mixer bowl with a dough hook, add the water and oil and put on a medium speed for approximately 5 minutes until the dough is well combined and kneaded. 2) Place onto a lightly dusted work surface and knead for about 2 minutes until smooth. Place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a tea towel and leave in a warm place for an hour to prove. 3) After an hour tip back onto the work surface dusting with more flour to prevent it sticking and knock back. Divide into 2, knead each one briefly then place onto a lightly oiled and oven proof frying pan. Pull the dough and stretch then cover each one with a cloth and leave again for one hour until lightly risen.

4) Remove the cloth and make finger insertions all over the dough, insert the tomberries or vine tomatoes into the indentations and spike a few with rosemary splinters. 5) Drizzle generously with olive oil and a good showering of sea salt. Bake in a hot oven at 180C for 16 minutes until a deep golden. 6) Remove from oven – leave to cool slightly then slice into generous chunks with maybe a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.

We paid them over £1600.00 just for the coins alone . They turned out to be pre 1947 silver coins that were normal currency a few years ago and are now highly collected. We asked them for their permission to pass on this story to help other people realise what they may be sitting on and they were only too pleased to allow us to let everyone know that they might be sitting on a goldmine and not even know it! One very lucky cat, named Dankie on arrival at the centre, was brought in by two builders who found her near a house they were working on. She was rushed to the vets as soon as she arrived at the centre, as it looked as though she had been run over by a car and half her leg had been ripped off; this was not a new injury as it was very badly infected with exposed bone. The vet confirmed the RSPCA’s suspicions and thought the injury was about a week old. Dankie was taken into surgery where the remainder of her leg was amputated. After a

ROCHDALE GOES ‘NUTS’ FOR ANDREW! Award-winning chef Andrew Nutter has been named Rochdale Man of the Year. Andrew, who owns Nutters restaurant in Norden, was honoured for his charity work and for representing the town 'nationally and internationally'. The celebrity chef has raised more than £100,000 for Springhill Hospice, The Christie, NSPCC and Hospitality Action, since opening his first restaurant 22 years ago. Two hundred men sat down for a four-course meal, with entertainment provided by comedian Lea Roberts, to see Andrew accept the coveted award from last year’s winner Harry Bell.

Our aim is to end hate crime altogether and I strongly believe that the work we are doing to raise awareness will help us to achieve this goal.” Hate crimes and incidents can be reported online at www.report-it.org.uk or to the police on 101. DAUGHTER FIGHTS FOR CHANGE Rochdale mum-of-three Lisa Smith, has launched an e-petition calling for CCTV systems to become compulsory in care and residential homes across the country in a bid to prevent cases of abuse and neglect of the elderly. Lisa launched her campaign after being so appalled at the treatment of her 86-year-old father, who suffers from dementia, that she decided to take him out of care and bring him home. Now acting as a full-time carer for her parents, whilst holding down her own job alongside a hectic family life, Lisa is urging everyone to help her make a difference and fight for change in the care system. Should the petition secure 10,000 signatures, the Government will be required to provide an official response. If 100,000 sign to support the call, the matter could well be placed high on the agenda in Parliament. MARIE CURIE FUNDRAISING GROUP LAUNCHES IN ROCHDALE

AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH TO CHOLESTEROL MANAGEMENT Rochdale’s independent vitamin and health food specialists, The Health Food Store on Cheetham St, are excited to be stockists of a fantastic new product. Owner, David Leeming, commented: “Every so often a product comes along that takes the health industry by storm. Due to its effectiveness one such product is CARDIO-K.”

A new volunteer Fundraising Group has launched in Rochdale to raise funds for Marie Curie. This is a new opportunity for the charity in the Rochdale area and Marie Curie would welcome anyone who’d like to be involved. The group will hold events, help out with the Annual Daffodil Appeal, Supermarket Collections and also have the opportunity to share their own fundraising ideas. Lynn Partridge, Community Fundraiser at Marie Curie, said: “The new Fundraising Group in Rochdale will make a huge difference locally by helping to raise the vital funds needed to support Marie Curie Nurses, who provide free care to people with terminal illnesses in their own homes.” To join the local Fundraising Group for Marie Curie, or to find out more about the group and other ways to support the charity, please call Lynn Partridge on 0161 255 2809 or e-mail lynn.partridge@mariecurie.org.uk.

Cardio-K contains red yeast rice, a source of a substance called Monacolins. This is converted in the body to something that inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme that triggers cholesterol production. 10 milligrams of MonacolinK is the daily dose that contributes to the maintenance of normal cholesterol levels. Cardio-K also contains CoQ10, a nutrient involved in the energy levels of our cells. It is important not to take CARDIO-K with statins.
