Rochdale’s literature festival is story of success Performance poet Tony Walsh read some of his best known work as well as a co-operative themed poem he’d written especially for the festival in the magnificent setting of the Church of St Mary in the Baum to bring the biggest Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival to a close. The hugely popular artist got a standing ovation at the sold-out show. Over the seven-day festival thousands of people watched top literary names that also included Jenny Eclair, Alan Johnson, Terry Waite CBE, Jessica Rankin and Mandasue Heller. The festival proved a big hit, across all ages, with 15 sold out performances and big crowds across the week.
FICTION - Mona Dash, part of The Whole Kahani presented her work at Rochdale Pioneers Museum.
SONGS - The Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre hosted a day of fun family activities.
Festival Director Punam Ramchurn hailed it a tremendous week: “We’ve had a truly diverse programme which helped attract audiences across the spectrum, from young people enjoying our Generation Z workshops to young families on a bat safari in the town centre and then the roar of Tony Walsh’s finale! It would be impossible to pick a favourite moment as there were so many … we managed to pack in such a lot in seven days, participatory arts, writing workshops, literary walks, theatre shows, big names and fringe events.” For photographs and videos from the festival visit www. rochdaleliteraturefestival.co.uk or @RochdaleLitFest on Twitter.
FUNNY – Jenny Eclair returned to the festival, with BBC Radio Manchester afternoon presenter Becky Want.
POLITICS - Former Home Secretary Alan Johnson Labour politician talked about his award-winning memoirs ‘The Long and Winding Road’.
ARTISTS – Visual artist Jessica Rankin premiered her new work at Touchstones.
TONY WALSH - Performance poet Tony Walsh read some of his best known work.
CREATIVE - Contact’s Creative Experts, delivered a workshop at Rochdale Pioneers Museum.
ACTION: Super-author, Guy Bass, brought his interactive Spynosaur show to the Crown Oil Arena.
FULL HOUSE - Terry Waite CBE at The Curtain Theatre.

CRIME - Mandasue Heller, one of the UK’s best-loved crime writers, discussed her novel ‘Run.’

BRIAN
MCFADDEN
Style caught up with Brian ahead of his upcoming tour to chat about life in Rochdale and his future plans, including those Westlife reunion rumours... Style: What can fans expect from your Boyzlife tour? Brian: This is our third Boyzlife tour in 18 months and this will be the most musical of the three. The first two tours were more about the stories and the videos and less about the songs. This show is all about the music. Between Westlife, Boyzone and my solo songs we’ve 21 number one singles and we plan to perform most of them in this show. When does the tour kick off? The official tour starts end of November in Asia so for now its tour rehearsal time. Are you and Keith Duffy releasing any new material? 2018 is Boyzone’s 25th anniversary so Keith will be releasing a brand new album with the boys to celebrate that. I will also be releasing a new solo album. So we will possibly take a look at us doing material together in 2019.
4
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Is it true that you’ll be supporting Boyzone on their Anniversary Tour? Yes I will be on the tour with the boys as a special guest performing my own and Westlife material. It has recently been reported in the press that Westlife might be making a comeback...? I read the same article but the rumours in the press are the first I’ve heard of it! What has been the most memorable moment of your career up to now? It’s impossible to pinpoint one special moment as getting to make a living from doing the thing I love so much is the special thing.
Have you settled into life in Rochdale? I love living here. The people are really nice and it’s a peaceful, quiet place. Perfect for me. The best thing is how close I am to Old Trafford and beloved reds.
You took part in The Jump last year - are there any other reality shows you’d fancy doing? I’m not interested in doing reality. I did The Jump because it was a competition and fun, but not into the idea of being on television having random chats with some cagey lulas who want to be famous for the sake of being famous.
You recently made everyone’s night by taking to the mic at the Norden Arms. Can Rochdale folk look forward to more impromptu performances?! It depends on how much alcohol is consumed... the more I drink the more likely I am to perform! What do you want for Christmas? A nice family Christmas. A traditional one. I’m hoping for snow!
Favourite Christmas song? The Christmas song... Chestnuts roasting on an open fire... Finally, what will be your New Year’s Resolution? To get fit and lose weight... the older I get the harder it gets!

You’ve done lots of presenting - is it something you’d like to do more of in the future? Music is my first love but I did enjoy presenting. It was a refreshing change in pace for me not having to tour the world. I felt settled doing television. But when it came to the crunch I just missed performing on stage too much. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

COMEDIAN
JIMMY
CRICKET Style recently caught up with legendary entertainer, Jimmy Cricket, who was born and bred in Northern Ireland, before moving to Rochdale with his wife May in 1974. At a time when there were only three television channels, Jimmy made his debut winning the first heat of Search for a Star. This was to prove a springboard for further television appearances, including The Krankies, Starburst and The Des O’Connor Show. He was later given his own TV series in the mid-1980s called And There’s More which included the first TV appearance by the impressionist Rory Bremner. He also had his own radio show on BBC Radio 2, which featured The Krankies Klub, alongside Bobby Davro, and appeared on the Royal Variety Show in 1984. During 2007, he featured in a Comic Relief video of The Proclaimers’ song I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), which featured Matt Lucas and Peter Kay. This Christmas will be starring as Professor Fitzwarren in Dick Whittington at The Gracie Fields Theatre in Rochdale. You can catch him from 22nd – 31st December.

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Style: You were born James Mulgrew, how did you choose the stage name Jimmy Cricket? Jimmy: I toyed with the idea of having a funny stage name that audiences will remember. I went from Jiminy Cricket to Timmy Cricket! Finally my agent suggested Jimmy Cricket.
Who have you most enjoyed working with in your career up to now? I’ve been blessed with working with so many. I loved doing panto with Cilla and also Harry Worth – we shared a hotel room when we were in panto in Birmingham so I got to know him really well. We would start laughing at breakfast time and it would be one long laugh all day. Billy Dainty too – so eccentric – I loved him when I saw him on the Sunday Night Palladium when I was at school and then was lucky enough to be in panto with him. What has been the highlight of your career so far? Well, there’s been so many and I’ve been lucky enough to do Children’s Royal Variety Shows, four TV series and five radio shows.
You’ve been happily married for 43 years now – where did you meet your wife May? I was a red coat at Butlins in Belfast. Then I changed to blue coats in Morecambe where I met my good lady May who was a waitress. She sang with her sister in the evenings after she’d cleared the tables. We didn’t know what to do when the camp finished, but ended up in Stockport, then Bury, then saw an advert in the Rochdale Observer and bought a little terrace on Crawford Street over here. Who first inspired you to go into comedy? Laurel & Hardy, Charlie Chaplin - all those visual comics in the 1920’s and 30’s. I used to watch Charlie Chaplin with my father at the cinema in Belfast. I also loved Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis; and Danny Kaye – I always loved the clown, that’s what really got me miming. I’ve worked hard with the stand up but if truth be known I’m really at home with the physical comedy. The biggest laughs I always get are from the ‘knock-about’ gags. I always wanted to stay family orientated too.
You’ve lived in Rochdale for over 40 years – what’s the best thing about the town? The lovely scenery. I love Healey Dell Nature Reserve. And the people are always so friendly. It’s the type of place where you can have a good natter with your neighbours while you’re putting the bins out! You have raised thousands of pounds for charity, what’s your latest fundraising venture? Well I’ve actually got a Christmas album out. It came out last year, in aid of Francis House. I sold 1200 but would love to sell more this year and raise more money for them. It’s raised £5000 so far. I’ve got 800 more to sell and will hopefully raise £10,000 in total.
Are there any young comedians you really enjoy watching? Yes, Tim Vine, Milton Jones. I think Michael McIntyre has got great body language and is very clever. You’re appearing in Dick Whittington at The Gracie Fields Theatre this year, are you looking forward to being home for Christmas? Yes it’ll be lovely! And because I live here there will be a lot of friends from Rochdale able to come. Do you still love doing panto? Oh I do! It’s the time of the year when everyone loves going to the theatre isn’t it. I’m looking forward to working with all the wonderful cast including Mark Labbett from The Chase.
Tell us a joke… Here’s one I wrote for Twitter yesterday. My wife has been with me when I’ve put weight on and taken weight off, in other words she’s stuck by me through thick and thin! All I want for Christmas is… Peace. Or the box set of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers! I just watch Fred on YouTube and think he’s incredible. He’s a big inspiration to me. Does that mean you’d go on Strictly Come Dancing? Oh yes! Tomorrow!
When is your first gig after panto? In the new year I’m in Blackpool at the Lyndene Hotel on most Wednesdays and Saturdays. Details are on my website www.jimmycricket.co.uk. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
And finally… what will be your New Year’s Resolution? To keep trying to be the person I’d like to be. Be disciplined… practise the gags more! Haha!

Borough scoops record number of Gold awards at North West In Bloom
The talents and hard work of Rochdale Borough Council, In Bloom Groups, businesses, communities and residents were rewarded with a record number of prestigious gold awards at the annual RHS North West In Bloom award ceremony in Southport. Heywood, Pennines and Rochdale all picked up the highest accolade of a gold award, while Middleton was awarded a silver on its very first year of entry, with a total of 37 awards won across the borough. In addition, Rochdale In Bloom has been chosen to represent the North West on a national basis in next year’s Britain In Bloom competition. The council has worked tirelessly with partner In Bloom groups to create special features around the borough including many new planting schemes and improving the main ‘gateways’ into the town centre. This, alongside the efforts made by the community, allotment groups, friends of parks, businesses, and individual entries resulted in a combination that scored very highly with the judges.
Councillor Neil Emmott, the council’s cabinet member for housing and environment, said: “We’re thrilled that we’ve achieved record results at this year’s In Bloom awards. This is down to collaborative working from council staff, In Bloom groups, local businesses and residents and is testament to what can be achieved when we work collaboratively. I would like to offer my personal thanks to all those involved and recognise the impact this has had on the borough and its appearance.” Roy Down, vice chairman of Rochdale In Bloom, added: “The whole of the volunteer-led group really came together and put one of our strongest ever North West In Bloom judging routes together... As a community group, we decide which features the judges see and visit, but we work with the council’s Environmental Management teams to make sure we also include the new features they are installing. This year’s route was absolutely spotless, no litter, grass verges all trimmed and edges, weeds removed, the list goes on. What a mammoth task the council had - and they delivered!”

The Aesthetic Rooms brings the feel of a Manchester city centre clinic with high standards and an expert team to Rochdale. Owner Zoe Pearson is a registered Nurse and independent prescriber with over ten years’ experience in aesthetics.
There are various anti-aging procedures available at the clinic including wrinkle injections (Botox) to treat fine lines and wrinkles of the face, these start at £100 with results lasting 3-6 months . Another popular treatment is lip enhancement using dermal fillers, Zoe has a reputable portfolio and treats clients of all ages whether it be for volume, definition or hydration, Zoe will tailor the treatment for each individual.
TREATMENT FOCUS - Tear troughs Tear troughs, or under eye hollows can give a tired and dull appearance to the skin. This is the groove or hollow at the junction directly under the eye lid at the top of the cheek.
What happens during the treatment? Zoe, the clinic nurse, uses Juvederm Volbella to treat the tear trough area. It is a dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid, something that naturally occurs in the body. Before starting the treatment a topical anaesthetic is applied to minimise discomfort, the area is then cleansed to reduce any risk of infection. A small guide hole is made with a micro needle and the Volbella is injected using a blunt cannula, it is a very comfortable procedure carried out in a private treatment room. Is there any down-time? Occasionally there can be some swelling and redness immediately after treatment although most patients carry on with their daily activities. Redness, lumps, bruising and swelling will typically subside within a few days, and make up can be applied the following day. How long will the results last? Juvdederm Volbella can last upto 12 months depending on lifestyle - good skincare and keeping well hydrated is advised. What is the cost? Juvederm Volbella costs £250 for 1ml which is enough to treat both eyes for most patients. Further syringes will be offered at a reduced price if required. Gift vouchers are available for all injectable treatments. They can be ordered/ paid for over the phone on 07903146247 / 01706593019 then posted out.

MUNICIPAL MAGNIFICENCE A TOWN HALL OF SPLENDOUR
The Gothic Revival exterior of the Town Hall tells you much about the world into which it came. Civic pride, wealth and need all combined to bring about a superb building. To tell the story of the Town Hall is, also, to tell the story of the surrounding area in which it is located. Rochdale had long been a town associated with wool, carried by pack horses from neighbouring West Yorkshire across Blackstone Edge and down into Rochdale to supply the flannel trade.
A growing town with a growing population needed services and amenities. It also needed somewhere from which to convey the town’s administrative needs. Previous locations such as the Wellington Hotel or Lord Street were deemed to be no longer fit for purpose for the, by now, Municipal Borough.
The nineteenth century was to become a century like no other before it as rural village life gave way to the industry of towns. Newly developed canals and then railways ensured that raw materials could be transported to the ever growing number of mills and then transport manufactured goods to their respective market places.
Britain had a huge Empire with much of its wealth being generated here in the North West. We were important and the desire was to show that.
The skyline of the town became one of chimneys as industries grew, hungry for manpower and raw materials. Intrepid entrepreneurs made fortunes and the town’s family dynasties were forged in this industrial revolution. 16
In 1859 thirty councillors met to discuss the provision of a suitable town hall. Seven sites were given consideration including Wet Rake, the Wellington Hotel and the Butts. An area known as The Wood Estate was duly chosen and £20,000 pounds allocated for the task. The cluttered area was purchased and cleared of shops, pubs, dwellings and workplaces. Leeds architect Mr.W.H.Crosland was the winning design from 27 plans www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
submitted in a competition and in March 1866 the first foundation stone was laid by John Bright, M.P. The material used for the construction was millstone grit from Blackstone Edge and Todmorden. Upon completion of the Town Hall in September 1871 the cost had risen to £155,000 (£14 million today!). To celebrate the opening, a two mile procession wound its way through the town which included bands, representatives of churches, societies and trades and no fewer than 16 local mayors. Everyone wanted to be a part of this joyful greeting for the new building. A lavish banquet for 600 guests was laid on in the Assembly Room and numerous speeches and toasts were made over two evenings. Special tickets were issued with 4000 people visiting in the first three days. People lived and worked largely in the area where they were born so knew nothing of the larger world. You can only imagine the reception given
by normal people to this amazing building. The River Roch ran, uncovered and filthy, in front of the Town Hall so the river was covered to improve the outlook. The name chosen was the Esplanade, the alternative Corporation Street having been rejected. Originally the Town Hall had a beautiful gilded tower adorned with a statue of St. George and the Dragon but in April 1883 disaster struck when the spired tower was destroyed by fire. The timbers were already said to be unstable and costly renovation was imminent when the fire swept through it. The statue of St George hit the ground shattering into thousands of pieces which were gathered by people as souvenirs. The architect of Manchester’s Town Hall, Alfred Waterhouse was given the task to rebuild and in so doing decided to strengthen the foundations. The tower was moved 16 feet to give its present day appearance. The interior of the Town Hall is also splendid with the grand and large Entrance Hall designed as an Exchange for the trading of goods though it was never used for this purpose with the merchants preferring to use the larger Exchange in Manchester.
The Assembly Room has a capacity to seat 1200 people and contains a 36 feet (12 metres) mural of King John signing the Magna Carta. Carvings of angels are on every supporting beam and there are stained glass windows of Britain’s monarchy through the ages. In 1913 a huge pipe organ was given as a gift. Every room and every aspect of the Town Hall is lavish though a sad loss to its appearance were the wrought iron gates sited in each external alcove, removed and melted down for munitions during WW2. The Town Hall is now almost 150 year old and has been at the heart of the history of the town welcoming many prominent visitors. Royalty have been regular visitors to the Town Hall including George V in 1935 and Queen Elizabeth in 1964. Gracie Fields also visited the building many times and was given the freedom of the Borough there in 1937 stating it as “the proudest moment of my life”. Adolph Hitler wanted to transport the whole building back to Germany should they have won the war!
With meetings and functions aplenty and the Registrar Office being located there the Town Hall is in regular use. Guided tours delight visitors and the Clock Tower restaurant is a delightful addition. The grand building has also made an appearance in many television series and films and continues to do so - the latest being popular gangster drama Peaky Blinders, as well as Coronation Street earlier this year. In its centenary year of 1971 the building was given a £12,500 “facelift” and the building would benefit from a little care and attention to restore some fading glories. At 146 years old that is to be expected. There is, however, no reason to believe that this fantastic Grade1 listed building should not continue to delight future generations. Paul Brady
The Town Hall is rarely associated with “pop music” but the Cellar Chambers were home to a youth club and disco in the 1960’s with soft drinks and chart hits of the day. Many in the town still fondly remember their Friday evenings there. Image courtesy of Clive Lawrence

PERFECT YORKIES Ingredients: 4 large eggs 175g plain flour 200ml whole milk A good pinch of sea salt Vegetable oil for pans Method Break your eggs into a large mixing dish and give them a quick mix together, nothing too heavy. Then sift in your flour and a pinch of sea salt and combine with your eggs until you have a thick paste. To this gradually add your milk, whisking all the time until all the milk is gone and you’ve got an enviously smooth batter.

Now, and most importantly, before you do anything else you’ve got to leave your yorkie batter for a good hour at room temperature to do it’s thing - whack the oven on about 220ºC while it’s doing this. Now, Yorkshire pudding tins work just fine but I like to use a little muffin tin (dariole mould to use it’s fancy name) to make smaller, crisper yorkies that cook in half the time. Pop a couple of drops of vegetable oil in each tin and pop them on a middle shelf in the oven for ten minutes until they’re piping hot. Then carefully fill each mould a little over half way and slam them back into the oven quick sticks for about 16 minutes for little ones or 30 for large yorkies. Keep an eye on them through the window but remember if you open the door too early you’ve got pancakes! Turn them out onto a rack and repeat until all the mix is gone!

HONEY ROAST CARROTS Ingredients: 1kg baby carrots A few sprigs of rosemary 1 tbsp runny honey 1 tbsp butter Method Ok, this is a little indulgent but a great cheffy way of getting people to say things like “oh, that’s how carrots used to taste”. Get a pan of salted water on to boil, lob in your baby carrots whole and boil for about 15 minutes until just cooked and drain. Then into a frying pan on a medium heat pop in your butter, rosemary and honey get that melted and smelling ridiculously good, then throw in your carrots, toss it all up Ainsley style, give them a couple of twists of black pepper then turn them out into a bowl like it was nothing.

ten minutes earlier will give you a rarer joint, ten minutes more it’ll be closer to well done.
A few hours before the beef is due to go in get it out of the fridge, you want it completely at room temperature before it goes anywhere near an oven.
Remove your beef, garlic and onions from the tray and cover with foil to rest for at least twenty minutes, this is possibly the most important step.
Pop the beef in a large baking tray, scatter the onions around it, cut the bulb of garlic in half and rub the beef all over with the cut sides. Season all over with black pepper, then pop a heaped tablespoon of bovril and the leaves off your thyme and rosemary on top, massage the whole lot into your joint then set aside for a few hours.
Meanwhile, pour the contents of the tray into a good size saucepan over a medium heat, add a splash of red wine and cook out a little.
Preheat your oven to 220ºC, whack your beef in on the top shelf for five minutes, then to a lower shelf for about one hour for a good medium roast. Fetching it out
Carve your beef just before you serve your roast to keep it moist and warm for longer and try not to look so smug when the compliments come rolling in.
Get your oven on at about 220ºC and grab yourself a small saucepan on a low heat - we’re about to get really cheffy. Lob the dripping in the saucepan and once it starts to melt add in the leaves off the rosemary and thyme, along with your diced garlic. It’s going to go ballistic when you do this but give it a few minutes until the garlic starts to colour ever so slightly then pour your dripping into a baking tray, carefully straining out the herbs and garlic and putting them to one side. This is going to mean you get delicious herby flavoured roasties without any burn bits to get stuck in your teeth.

Once it’s boiling, lob in your cauliflower and give it about five minutes on a fast boil, then while it’s still got a little bite get it out of there and into a colander - there’s a special place in hell reserved for people who serve mushy cauliflower cheese. Preheat your oven to 220ªC, now in a saucepan over a medium heat melt your butter, once it’s melted drop the heat down a little and add in your flour gradually, mixing it constantly with a www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Once that has cooked down, nicely stir in a heaped teaspoon of bovril, add a litre of warm water and when it starts to simmer, thicken with gravy granules.
Using a slotted spoon, in batches, pop your potatoes into a colander and give them a little shake about to rough up the edges, this’ll give the dripping something to soak into, once they’ve had a bit of roughing up CAREFULLY pour them into the hot dripping, spread them out into one layer and pop them back into the oven. They want about 45 minutes on a middle shelf in total, giving them a bit of a turn every 15 to make sure they all get a good coating. Once they’re ready, pull the tray out of the oven and sprinkle over the crispy fried herbs and garlic we put to one side before, for the ultimate partner to your Sunday roast! wooden or plastic spoon. Once it’s all combined into a thick paste you want to add in your milk bit by bit until you have a luxuriously smooth sauce. Now take it off the heat and stir in your dijon mustard and your grated cheeses, saving some back to sprinkle on top, remember to season it up a little. Now arrange your cauliflower in a handsome, ovenproof dish, pour over your cheese sauce and dash on the last of your cheese. Whack in the oven for about 20 minutes until golden, bubbling and utterly, utterly delicious. 21

New Year, New You! After the edible excesses of Christmas and the drinkable excesses of New Year, chances are that come January the 1st you’re more than ready for a fresh start, detox, life cleanse or something similar; which includes at least a month of alcohol abstinence, and possibly taking every morsel of leftover Christmas chocolate into work so you can’t scoff the lot after the traumatic first day back after the holidays. If you fancy aiming for a more substantial life transformation, here are some other ideas for New Years Resolutions...
GET HEALTHY This incorporates exercising more, losing weight, drinking less and adopting a more healthy diet, which according to research, a whopping 38% of us want to do, making this the most common resolution. Setting out to improve your health can also improve your bank balance, for example, cutting down on takeaways and those other little indulgences such as that after-work glass of wine or fancy barista coffee you pick up on the way in each morning. Instead, draw up a meal plan for the whole week, including taking lunch with you to work, will help you eat healthily, avoid snacking and save money too. And while you’re at it, cancel your expensive gym membership and ditch the car. There are thousands of easy, fun workout routines available online that you can do in the comfort of your living room, and walking to work saves cash on petrol, parking, and burns calories too. 24
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
LEARN A NEW SKILL OR HOBBY This is perhaps an easier goal to achieve, as it’s way more exciting than the resolution stereotype of ‘getting fit’, which usually equals depriving yourself rather than having fun, which learning new things certainly is. Be specific in your resolution, rather than saying ‘I want to learn a language’, say ‘I’d like to be able to order my meal and ask for directions in Spanish by the time I go on holiday in August. That way, you’ve given yourself a reason for the resolution and a good incentive to make good on it. Or you could learn an instrument, do a counselling course, take up a new sport...the possibilities are endless, and achieving this kind of resolution is made easier by the plethora of courses on offer at local colleges and leisure centres. SPEND MORE TIME WITH FAMILY & FRIENDS This is something most people don’t even realise they need to do, as life passes us by so quickly that before we know it it’s been six months and you haven’t left the house on a Saturday night for anything more exciting than to pick up your takeaway. For this one, get organised. Routine is your friend, and by building social time into your schedule, it means you will stick to it. Set a monthly date with friends to go for coffee, lunch or cocktails – whichever you fancy – and stick it. Maybe choose the weekend after pay day, so there are no excuses. Or say that one night every week is family night, and that everyone has to attend, eat together and – controversial – no phones allowed. That way, the time you spend together is quality time, no interruptions.
HOW TO STICK TO THESE RESOLUTIONS? An Ultimate Question isn’t it, considering that, according to research, only 10% of us actually achieve goals set as part of a new years resolution. Often, people who fail at keeping their resolutions tend not to have a plan of how to actually achieve them, or set unrealistic goals that are too difficult to accomplish and have a demoralising effect. Start with small steps, rather than saying ‘I’m never drinking alcohol again’, say that you’ll detox for January and take it from there. And don’t beat yourself up if you do have a prosecco on a Friday after work, just start afresh the day after instead of going on a weekend bender and feeling doubly bad on Monday morning. To do lists are a great way to set down on paper what you need to do to reach your goal, and give you a sense of satisfaction and achievement as you tick each thing off (or maybe that’s just me). They also allow you to be specific in exactly what you have to do to get to your goal. So rather than saying ‘I want my dream body this year’, say ‘I’d like to lose two pounds a week’, or schedule a different workout to do each day. This way, by the middle of the year, you will be able to check your progress and adjust your tick-list accordingly. Giving yourself a little reward when you complete a step towards your resolution is also a good incentive, like having a bubble bath or giving yourself half an hour of reading your new book or watching your favourite programme. Positive reinforcement works, people! You can do it. Rachel Clarke www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

BANGERNOMICS
Bangernomics is a term coined quite a while ago now in the Motoring Press which describes the art of buying cars cheaply that will provide reliable service for maybe a couple of years before moving on to the next. For those of us who like the variety of a different car every year, it’s a great way of satisfying the desire without suffering the crippling financial curse of depreciation. So setting a limit of £1,000, equivalent to a few monthly payments on a new car, let’s have a look at what is out there. WEEKEN D CA R CH O I CE: TOYOTA M R2 If you are a regular reader of this column you will know that one of my favourite cars is the Mazda MX-5 but at this price level, I couldn’t in good conscience recommend you rush out and buy a sub £1k example as they tend not to offer the best value. However, Toyota’s third incarnation of the MR2 is very nearly just as good, but with much better reliability and much fewer reported issues regarding rust.
Being a Toyota the engines are bulletproof if treated to the proper maintenance schedule, however check carefully for rust underneath, especially around the rear cross member where owners have reported problems. The one we found: ebay.co.uk - 2001 X Reg, “Runs and drives like an absolute dream, full
On a crisp bright winter’s day there is no better experience than cranking the heaters up, dropping the roof and finding some twisty country roads in the car that would mark the end of Toyotas involvement in the sports car market for nearly a decade. Steering is sharp, brakes are responsive and the engine is eager. Anyone who thinks that automated cars are the future, seriously needs to spend an hour in the company of an MR2! 28

leather”, 12 months MOT. £900 or Make an Offer. FA M ILY CH O ICE: VO LVO S40 Maybe not the first family car that springs to mind but the first generation Volvo S40 made from 1995 to 2004 is an ideal choice as a cheap family hack. Featuring highly
in any reliability index from cars of the era, an S40 isn’t going to set your world on fire but it will provide solid, reliable transport from a company renowned for its reputation for safety. There was quite a wide range of specifications available but on a car that has seen probably 13 or 14 winters, it’s always best to keep to the simplest spec. Diesel is slightly more robust than petrol but Volvos of this age are pretty bullet proof so just check for evidence of regular servicing, even if it’s just invoices for oil and filters as many owners of cars of this age will be doing the basic maintenance themselves.
The one we found: Trade Seller on Autotrader.co.uk– 1.9S Petrol 51 plate, 11 months MOT, full history with 100k miles, 1 previous owner £695.
4X4 C H O I C E: DA IH ATS U TE RIO S So you either live out in the sticks, or like most of the best bits of northern England, somewhere hilly that for a few days per year will get some snow. What you need then is something that will get you to work when the weathermen are predicting doom. It was hard to pick a car here as there are two I really like in this genre, The Daihatsu Terios and the Suzuki Jimny. Both are little off-roaders with big personalities but on balance I am going to have to go with the Daihatsu. The Terios always punched well above its weight with enough room inside for 5 adults and their luggage. It was a welcome change, being a low-cost 4x4 without looking like a shed-on-wheels or being a supermini on steroids. The 1.3 engine in the earlier cars that fall into this price bracket is sturdy and provides enough power for the job. It can also be switched between 2 and 4 wheel drive for saving fuel around town and has a diff lock, just like a Range Rover, for when things get really slippy. The one we found: Private Seller on Gumtree.co.uk – 03 Plate, 1.3, 66k miles, 6 months MOT £795.

BU Y E RS GU ID E As well the obvious visual checks for rust underneath, always have a good look at the cars history both on paper and via the DVLAs MOT History service which is free and only requires the registration number of the car you are buying. Whilst not infallible it should highlight any major discrepancies with mileage and where it’s been welded in the past. Whatever you choose though, remember to buy with caution and perhaps take a casual gamblers attitude of only spend what you can afford to lose!

Rochdale businesswoman receives lifetime achievement award A prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award has been bestowed on Rochdale businesswoman Laura Heywood for her 25-year contribution to the imaging aftermarket, mainly in the UK. 150 people attending the Europe Live Conference in Warsaw, Poland, applauded her. Laura is no stranger to accolades. KleenStrike, the Rochdale business she started with her late partner Don Barker in the 1980s, was honoured as Remanufacturer of The Year in 1999 by The Recycler and awarded the Rochdale Business Award in the category of the Environment in 2014. That business continues to prosper today and celebrates 34 years in business. “The Lifetime Achievement Award is the most personal to me,” Laura said. “It is the culmination of many years of working with like-minded people hoping to make a difference in encouraging reuse.” Vincent Van Dijk, the General Secretary of ETIRA (the European Toner & Inkjet Remanufacturer’s Association) told the conference Laura “has worked relentlessly on behalf of its members, and despite its small budget, has secured many benefits for the industry.” He added, “The Lifetime 6894-WIN-STYLE-2016FIN.qxp_Aut-2013 18/11/2016 11:05 Page 57 Achievement Award was a perfect recognition of a person who, for many years, has spent a major part of her own time and money to help our industry forward.”

CREATE A REVERSE ADVENT CALENDAR
HELP MAKE A BIG CHANGE Homelessness rates have risen dramatically across the country, leaving lots of people at risk, especially in cold weather. Big Change Rochdale aims to help vulnerable homeless people get the help they need to get off and stay off the streets. A group of local charities and organisations has teamed up to create a special fund that will be used to provide people with the practical items they need to build new lives away from the streets. The campaign is urging people who live in, work in and visit Rochdale Town Centre to donate money to the fund rather than give money directly to people who are begging on the streets. Research suggests giving money to people who are begging does not help to move them away from the streets and address the complicated mix of problems, which may include mental health issues and drug and alcohol addiction. By giving them money, you are making it easier for them to continue to live on the streets and may be discouraging them from accessing the many support services that are out there. The fund will help provide accommodation and support people to manage a tenancy agreement, furnish a new home, manage income and expenditure, and build a positive productive life in the community away from the streets. You can donate at www.bigchangerochdale.co.uk.
The ‘reverse advent calendar’ is a lovely idea and a great way to make a positive difference to a local family this Christmas. It involves putting one item of food aside each day and is a way of helping families in crisis this festive season. It’s best to start now as it’s better for food banks to receive food earlier rather than later. But December works too - just take products in a few days before Christmas. You could get the whole family involved by getting children to decorate the box, helping them to understand that Christmas is about giving. Rochdale Foodbank provide 3+ days of food to around 280300 local families in crisis every month. The foodbank is open 11am - 12.45pm every weekday, at 8 South Parade, Rochdale. Food donations can be dropped off anytime during opening hours. There is also a donation point at the entrance to Tesco, (Silk Street, Sudden) during opening hours. The foodbank urgently need breakfast cereals, pasta sauces and tinned/packet custard and are short of items such as milk, sugar, coffee, fruit juice and tinned tomatoes/fruit/spaghetti/ potatoes. Items such as Christmas puddings, shortbread and selection boxes are also welcome. A full up to date shopping list can be found on their website, visit rochdale.foodbank.org. uk or call 01706 713701 to find out more.

GIVE A CHRISTMAS GIFT Rochdale Borough Council is seeking donations to this year’s Christmas Toy Appeal, which helps to make sure local children living in poverty have presents to open on December 25th. The annual appeal is organised by the council’s staff-run ‘Giving Back’ charity. It asks residents and staff to buy one extra present at Christmas – a new, unwrapped gift suitable for a child between 0-16 years-old and simply leave it at any local library across the borough by Wednesday 13 December. Council staff, who collected a record 1,200 toys last year, will then make sure they reach the boroughs less fortunate children in time for the big day.

CHATTER & NATTER A new initiative has been launched in the borough to get people talking and reduce loneliness. The Chatty Café Scheme has been set up by Alex Hoskyn who came up with the idea when she was a new mum feeling isolated, craving adult conversation. During a visit to a café, Alex observed an elderly lady sat alone, whose body language appeared depressed and fed up. At another table she saw a man with additional needs and his carer both looking equally down. “I thought what a positive impact we could have had on each other if we had all sat together” says Alex. “Sometimes just an interaction with another human can brighten your day”. Rochdale is proud to be one of the first boroughs in the country with a number of Chatter & Natter tables for its residents to use. MIXING REFLEXOLOGY AND PODIATRY Earlier this year we introduced a new service for our patients - Reflexology; a system of massage used to relieve tension and treat illness, based on the theory that there are reflex points on the feet that link to every part of the body. In a modern medical setting Refl Reflexology is used in a similar way to Acupuncture as a complimentary therapy alongside typical treatment paths. It is reported to stimulate nerve function, boost circulation and stimulate the central nervous system, helping to provide relief from a wide range of symptoms. A typical Reflexology appointment lasts around 60 minutes and will be tailored to meet your individual needs.

WHEN BUFFALO BILL CAME TO ROCHDALE In these days of mass and social media, it is easy to underestimate the sheer power of the visit of a live
show to a provincial town at the start of the last century. Without radio or television, live performances were the only form of mass entertainment. Cinema was still in its infancy and most films were one-reelers lasting only a few minutes. It took until the beginning of World War One for cinema to become important. CAN YOU REALLY LOOK TEN YEARS YOUNGER? The most common answer to my facial consultation question is “to look ten years younger!”… this is usually followed by laughter (by the client, not myself) and a sharp comment from my client usually follows “I know that’s not possible”. Well in this edition I’d like to dispel that myth because guess what ladies and gentlemen? There are ways you can regain the youthful look you had ten years ago, here’s how…. Let’s begin with the basics - skin care. If the foundations are right then that’s a great start. So many clients feel their skin looks aged and ‘wrinkled’ but the majority of clients I see do not have deep wrinkles; rather they are the victims of dehydration, which has left them with superficial lines, which can be very easily treated with a good skin care routine and of course the recommended 8-10 glasses of water (daily).
so many serums available to you and there is something to suit each skin concern; for superficial ageing caused by dehydration lines I would recommend hyaluronic acid serum by Juliette Ormand £29.00. Unless you have been hibernating for the past two years you will have seen a significant rise in the use of hyaluronic acid in beauty and skin care due to its amazing anti-ageing properties and ability to make the skin look plump, filled and glowing as opposed to dehydrated, lined, dull and slack. When applied daily it really will transform your skin and make you look ten years younger within days of use. Following on from serum you must apply a face cream to nourish the top layer of the skin and allow the serum you have just applied to penetrate deeper.
In addition to skincare, another way to make a huge difference to the age you portray is all in the eyes! They say the eyes are the windows to the soul so my philosophy is What do I mean by a ‘good skincare let’s frame those windows and pop routine’? Cleanse the skin gently some luxury curtains on them! And but effectively with a cleanser of by framing them I am of course your choice. Whether this is with referring to your eyebrows. More a cleansing milk, wash, foam or often than not eyebrows are the water it is imperative that the skin forgotten feature, left to become is cleansed of impurities twice overgrown and greying. Rochdale entrepreneur aims to reduce plastic waste with new recycling plant A new plastic recycling plant has recently opened in Rochdale, with the aim of reducing the amount of our plastic waste either being sent to landfill or exported to China. Maxine Brown, managing director of MB Recycling Ltd, opened the plant after sourcing finance for the expansion of her business, which she launched after being made redundant, later reaching a £600,000 turnover in its fourth year. Maxine commented: “In the early days, I quickly found the same message was going around – either send the waste to landfill or export to China, both of these options seemed to go against the grain, environmentally. I had a brainwave and thought about setting up a recycling plant to encourage firms to keep everything in the UK instead of exporting, which has the added bonus of reducing our carbon footprint. This is especially important now as China is clamping down on the imports of waste plastic, so more than ever is being sent to landfill.” The 6,500 sq ft plant in Heywood, Rochdale, has the capacity to recycle 300 tonnes per month and 4,000 tonnes annually. Maxine has now taken on three staff, including one apprentice. The finance for Maxine’s new venture was sourced through Access to Finance and Oldham-based business finance
firm, PMD. Tom Brown, head of direct finance at PMD, said: “Supporting local businesses is very important to us at PMD. We work with a variety of firms, from start-ups to large corporates in a number of different industries. When Maxine contacted us regarding finance for the equipment she needed, we used our contacts and expertise in the industry to ensure we secured the best deal for her new business. We wish Maxine the best of luck for the future.” Maxine added: “Recycling is a passion of mine. Huge savings can easily be made for companies when you consider it costs around £100 to send a tonne of waste plastic to landfill. But it isn’t just the cost implications, it’s better for the UK to keep it here. I’ve definitely seen a change in the perceptions of recycling over the years – word is spreading. “When people find out what I do and what industry I’m in, I do get a surprised reaction sometimes as it is a typically maledominated industry, but it’s definitely a good talking point.”

A DOG IS FOR LIFE, NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS Happy ever after for local waggy tailed friends
Thousands of rescue dogs across the North West are currently waiting patiently for their forever homes. Unfortunately, after the festive period this number usually increases as some families find they can’t cope with the puppy they’ve bought for Christmas. If you’re considering buying a puppy, please consider a rescue dog instead. Adopting a dog from a local rescue centre gives them the second chance they deserve. Style recently met Poppy, Blueberry, Sofica, Zak, Ben, Charlie and Meg who have all found happiness with their local forever families...

POPPY is a golden retriever and will be five years old in January. She was rescued from a Shropshire breeder who had 50 golden retriever dogs, all kept outside in pens. She had never been for a walk, hadn’t been socialised or had any toys to play with. She was skin and bone with very short fur; very timid and anxious. Poppy was rescued by the North West Golden Retriever Club who found her a forever home. Her new family focused on acclimatising Poppy to the outside world which included lots of different walks, socialising with other dogs and teaching her to play with toys. Poppy is now a very sociable pet and very much a family member - she loves her daily walk, especially in the woodlands and has a fascination with grey squirrels. Poppy loves watching television especially wildlife programmes. Poppy is now living happily in Wardle. North West Golden Retriever Club Pat Blackburn: Tel 01248 370477 www.nwgrc.co.uk 44

ZAK, BEN, CHARLIE AND MEG were rescued by the Freedom of Spirit Trust for Border Collies (FOSTBC). Zak and Ben are nine year old brothers. They were rescued in 2009 from a farm in South Wales by Barbara from the FOSTBC. Both were very malnourished, bewildered and had never seen the outside world. Zak and Ben were finally adopted together by their forever family. Charlie is an eight year old border collie who was rescued when he was only a six weeks old and fighting for his life. Barbara nursed him around the clock and when he was strong enough he joined Zak and Ben in his forever home. Charlie now loves playing with footballs and swimming in the sea. Meg is an eight year old border collie and was an unwanted dog. She was adopted by the same family and lives happily with her three new brothers in Shaw. Meg loves walking, swimming in the sea and keeping the boys in check. FOSTBC, Golcar Farm, Spring Lane, Bingley, BD16 3AU Tel 01274 566250 www.fostbc.org.uk
BLUEBERRY is a four year old Lurcher. He was rescued by the Tia Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue in Doncaster - his mother and father were also rescued after being found starving to death. His father sadly died but his mother was re-homed. He was named Blueberry due to his bright blue eyes. He loves food and once stole eleven uncooked scones! He has even eaten a mobile phone. He was recently picked up by a jogger and taken to the vets as a lost dog - he spent the morning meeting and greeting the customers whilst his dog parent was frantically screaming across the hillside looking for him. Blueberry is definitely a character! He is now living happily in Todmorden. Tia Rescue, Mill Race Farm Wroot Road Finningley Doncaster DN9 3DY
SOFICA is a one year old cross breed Romanian rescue dog. She had a bad start in Romania, having been run over and left to die at the side of a road. She had three broken legs and a broken hip, and had to endure several operations and three months rehabilitation. When she had recovered well enough she was brought to England with Travel 4 Paws by Wendy’s Woofers and settled into her foster home. Her wonderful foster family fell in love with her and adopted her in June this year. She now loves to swim, walks 10 miles a day and is living happily in Rossendale with her forever family. Rochdale animal lover, Wendy Etheridge, created the Wendy’s Woofers Facebook page (facebook.com/groups/wendyswoofers) to help find loving forever homes for the Romanian dogs she supports. Wendy commented: “All my dogs receive thorough vet checks and are microchipped, vaccinated, and spayed/neutered if old enough, before they leave Romania. I provide a full rescue back up for every dog I bring to the UK, and I am privileged to have an excellent network of adopters, fosterers, and supporters.”

ROCHDALE RSPCA NEWS & EVENTS Exciting changes
We are delighted that at long last our new car park and dog exercise area have been completed and are in use. We hope to be able to landscape the area within the next few months. Having a large securely fenced and grassed dog exercise area will allow us to safely exercise dogs in our care. They will be able to run freely and enjoy themselves. We also intend to offer dog assessment and puppy training and will continue to offer advice in order to support responsible pet ownership.
How you can help support us
The work of the animal centre will carry on as long as we have the support of the good people of Rochdale & District. Check our website and facebook pages for more information, they are RSPCA Rochdale Animal Centre and the new RSPCA Rochdale Shops and Ebay which is a separate page advertising items for sale and where we will keep you up to date with news and events. If you love animals as much as we do, please come and help us. You can volunteer at the animal centre, in our charity shops or run your own fundraising event.
Oscar’s story
Oscar was hit by a car and suffered a broken pelvis. He also needed a leg amputating and a toe removing on his other back leg.
Why acquiring a new pet for Christmas is not a good idea...
Wildlife
We have over the last few months also become a holding centre for wildlife brought in after being rescued by our Inspectors. We give them initial care and assessment before they are transferred to the RSPCA’s Wildlife Centre at Stapeley Grange in Cheshire.

It can be stressful for any pet in a home over the festive season but especially for new pets with all the noise, parties, decorations for them to play with (and eat!). Once the decorations are packed away and everyone has gone back to work/school this pet is left alone and wonders what has happened. This can lead to destructive behaviour due to boredom. The cost of keeping a pet should be taken into consideration. It is not just the food, vaccinations, worm and flea treatment. It is the cost of the unexpected. Over the Christmas period most vets are closed so if your animal needs a vet because it has eaten something it shouldn’t such as a cat eating a decoration off the tree, or a dog eating chocolate it would have to be a trip to the emergency vet. This can cost anything from £95 to £110 just to see the vet without any treatment. If your animal has an accident this can cost hundreds of pounds. Pet insurance is always a good idea and means you are covered for the unexpected trip to the vets.
Can you spare £1 to buy an RSPCA animal a Christmas dinner? Every year at the RSPCA Rochdale, we look after and re-home a large number of animals. It costs a LOT of money to look after all of these different animals & we rely fully on fundraising & donations by the public. Your £1 donation would go towards making the animals in our care this Christmas feel extra special, with a treat, toy or extra yummy Christmas lunch. We will also send you a thank you note. This could make an ideal gift for an animal lover or even a secret santa gift! Donations can be made at the animal centre and all our shops. Details are on Facebook. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
The owners of Oscar could not afford the vet bill to even get his legs x-rayed and their only option was to have him put to sleep. He is only 8 months old and the last thing they expected was a vet bill by the end of treatment of around £1,000. Oscar was signed over to us here at Rochdale. He is in the early stages of his recovery and has a long road ahead of him. If anyone would like to make a donation towards his vet bills, and ongoing treatment, this can be done on our website, at any of our charity shops or at the animal centre. He will not be ready for re-homing until well into the new year.
Please nominate us...
on Rochdale Exchange shopping centre’s Facebook page as your chosen Christmas charity to receive the money raised from the annual Santa’s Grotto. Nominations close on 15th December.

CLASSIC BRAISED LAMB SHANK WITH PORT REDUCTION Now here’s a really gutsy, hearty dish. The lamb shank cooks best using a method of cooking where there’s plenty of moisture such as braising, stewing or very slow roasting done over a long period of time. This dish can be Andrew Nutter CELEBRITY CHEF
served straight away, or done the day before, refrigerated and reheated 20 minutes before serving. That makes it ideal for stress-free entertaining.
Serves 4 Ingredients: 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 lamb shanks about 1lb each 1 carrot – diced 1 stick celery – diced 2 clove garlic – chopped 1 onion – chopped Sprigs thyme and rosemary 200ml Port 200ml red wine 800ml beef stock To Serve: Crushed potatoes, onions, baby parsnips, carrots and herb sprigs 56
1)
Heat the olive oil in a casserole pan and brown the lamb shanks on all sides.
2)
Add the carrot, celery, garlic and onion and soften, then add the thyme, rosemary, Port, red wine and beef stock.
3)
Cover with tin foil and place in a hot oven 150˚c for about 2½ hours until tender – check half way through to ensure there is enough liquor for the lamb to braise in.
4)
Remove from oven and leave to cool.
5)
Pass off about 400ml of the cooking liquor, place in a pan and reduce by half – this forms your finished lamb sauce.
6)
When ready to serve, arrange the hot potatoes and vegetables on a plate, place the lamb on top and finish with the hot lamb sauce spooned over.

Happy 21st Birthday to The Crimble The Deckers Hospitality Group recently celebrated 21 years of owning and operating Crimble Hall with an all day party that proved a great success. General Manager Gaynor Walton said, “The Crimble has been a recognisable part of the local community for a long time! We wanted to invite guests, old and new and our neighbours to come and celebrate with us.” During the day, there was children’s entertainment, bouncy castle and face painting, accompanied by a hog roast. In the evening, the theme was 21 so The Conservatory Restaurant and Fenton Lounge bar had plenty of 2 for 1 offers. Local singer Graham Sheller’s finished the night off with acoustic guitar and DJ sets. All in all, a momentous occasion well celebrated.

RUN ROCHDALE – hundreds hit roads for half marathon, 10K and fun run Hundreds of runners descended on Rochdale for the annual Williams BMW Rochdale Half Marathon, 10K and Fun Run on Sunday 8 October. The event, now in its third year was hailed another success after almost 1,000 runners registered, encouraged by hundreds of spectators lining the routes. The races started at Rochdale Town Hall and set out on new traffic-free courses taking in the town and some of the borough’s best countryside scenes. All runs ended with a final sprint back to the finish line at Rochdale Town Hall, where they were met by hundreds of cheering spectators and a carnival atmosphere. Winner of the half marathon was Benjamin Coop from Bury Athletics Club in 01:12:12. The first female was Lisa Probert in 01:39:46. Winner of the 10K was Michael Mannings of Oldham and Royton Harriers in 33:54 minutes, while the first female runner was Diane McVey of Wilmslow Running Club in 37:32. Ian Aitchison won the 1 mile fun run in 06:15, while last year’s winner Rosangela Terim came in close second on 06:22. Full results are available at www. rochdale.gov.uk/run
proved a popular spectator spot too with hundreds enjoying the morning spectacle by Lake Bank. Title sponsor Williams BMW Rochdale had another eye-catching presence on The Esplanade. They displayed their latest collection of new models including the i8, a beautiful plug-in hybrid sports car, X6, M3, 5 Series and a 4 Series Coupe. Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for culture, health and wellbeing, who took part in the fun run, said: “We’ve not just attracted runners from the North West, but across the UK and beyond. It’s good to see how the reputation of this event is growing and I think the subtle improvements we have made this year went down well. The atmosphere was superb, the weather was perfect for running with spectators providing much needed encouragement and we even got some sunshine!” Springhill Hospice was the official charity for the event which returns on Sunday 7 October 2018.
Rochdale Music Service added some musical entertainment to proceedings, playing on the bandstand in Broadfield Park and on The Esplanade there was a ‘Sports Village’ featuring fitness and health stalls. Once again the section around Hollingworth Lake
