ROCHDALE BOROUGH ‘BLOOMS AND GROWS’ AS TOWNSHIPS SWEEP PRESTIGIOUS HORTICULTURE AWARDS Months of hard work by volunteers and council staff has been recognised by judges from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) as all four areas in our blossoming borough have been awarded medals at the 2018 regional North West in Bloom competition. The competition is the last of the season and follows on from award wins at RHS Tatton Park and from the national competition, Britain in Bloom. Rochdale, Pennines and Heywood received a gold award each while Middleton, which entered the competition for only the second time this year, received a silver-gilt. Awards are also given for specific achievements and this year included best feature in a public place for the pop-up garden in Rochdale Town Centre, an overcoming adversity award for Rochdale borough, gold award for TOPS, Heywood, silver for Middleton town centre management and an outstanding contribution to North West in Bloom for Roy Down, the chairman of Rochdale in Bloom. RHS judges visited Rochdale borough in the summer and were impressed with the stunning displays, which were inspired by the First World War, to mark its centenary and honour the 16 million people who died in the conflict. Volunteers downed their trowels for the ceremony in Southport on 2nd November to receive the prestigious awards and celebrate the small army of volunteers and local businesses who helped in creating this year’s displays. This is the third RHS win this year for Rochdale in Bloom who have

Professor
BRIAN
COX
“Not many planets have civilisation... and beer!”
4
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Professor Brian Cox OBE, FRS, is widely recognised as the foremost communicator for all things scientific, having presented a number of highly acclaimed science programmes for the BBC, boosting the popularity of subjects such as astronomy and physics and receiving a host of accolades. His television programmes include ‘21st Century Space Race’, ‘Forces of Nature’, ‘Human Universe’, ‘Wonders of Life’ and ‘Wonders of the Universe’ as well as cohosting (with comedian Dara O’Briain) the popular annual astronomy and cosmology series ‘Stargazing Live’. He has also presented critically acclaimed documentaries for the BBC Horizon series. As well as his successful television career, Brian has also sold over a million books worldwide and embarked on a successful UK theatre and arena tour seen by over 150,000 people, including a sell-out 9000 seat show at Wembley Arena in London, for which he holds the Guinness World Record for the largest science show ever performed. It might surprise you to learn that the Oldham-born physicist began his career in the music industry as keyboard player with rock band Dare and later with chart-toppers D:Ream, best known for their number one hit ‘Things Can Only Get Better’. Proving he can turn his hand to just about anything, Brian has now launched his very own Cosmic Brew!
TOGETHER, JW LEES AND PROFESSOR BRIAN COX ARE ON A MISSION, TO EXPLORE NEW WORLDS, TO SEEK OUT NEW IDEAS AND NEW FLAVOURS. IT IS THIS THRUST OF CURIOUSITY THAT HAS LED TO COSMIC BREW: A HAPPY AND THIRST-QUENCHING ALE. GRAB A BEER AND ENJOY! AVAILABLE FROM JANUARY 2019.
Style caught up with Brian to discuss space travel, life on Earth, football and beer...! Style: Why did you decide to launch your own beer? Brian: Growing up in Oldham, walking distance from the brewery, JW Lees is a name I’ve always known – and their beers are legendary! So, to work with them, to experiment with different beers, to uncover the secrets and science of brewing and launch Cosmic Brew has been a great experience. And it was great to launch it at the Horton Arms, in Chadderton, where I first enjoyed a beer in my teenage years. I also wanted to put something back into Oldham – to collaborate with a successful local industry to make something worthwhile. I’ve never done anything like this before, but when Michael asked me to collaborate on a beer, I couldn’t resist. It feels right. What’s the idea behind the label design? The pattern of the stars on the label is the view of the night sky looking North over the brewery on the day I www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
was born; March 3rd, 1968. It’s what I would have seen had I looked out of the window. There’s a fact for the pub quiz! If you could share a pint with anybody, dead or alive, who would it be? I always wanted to meet David Bowie actually, but also Einstein would’ve been interesting! And alive, I’d like to meet Bob Dylan. Do you still follow Oldham Athletic? Yeah, I used to have a season ticket and we used to go the games, then go back to The Horton Arms when I was 17+. Those were the glory days of Oldham being founding members of the Premier League, with Joe Royle managing and the Wembley semi finals. What do you have coming up? I’m just finishing a thing for the BBC called Planets which will be on next April, but also I’m getting ready for my live shows next year, so I’ll be at Manchester Arena next February - it’s nearly sold out but we can open it up for even more. (continued...) 5
(cont.)
Who inspires you? In science, it was the Apollo program and I was just fascinated by the moon landings. Also a movie by Carl Sagan called Cosmos in the 1980’s which was probably the best science documentary ever made. Will you be going to see the new First Man movie? I can’t wait to see it. I’ve actually got quite friendly with a few of them, and Buzz Aldrin in particular, so that will be interesting to see. It was NASA’s 60th birthday this year, what do you see happening in the next sixty years? I think we’ll be on Mars within the next twenty years and I think it will be a collaboration as I don’t think SpaceX or NASA can do it on their own. The thing about SpaceX and other companies like Blue Origin is they’ve worked out how to use reusable rockets and reusable rockets have been the barrier to repeatable space flight. I met Jeff Bezos once and he said, “Imagine you fly from London to New York and get off the plane and blow it up, imagine how expensive that would be”. Now we know how to reuse them, there is a chance for us try it. And I’m sure there will be space flight/space tourism in the next ten/ fifteen years but I’m also sure Virgin Galactic will be doing it in five years.
6
You recently appeared on screen alongside Sir David Attenborough discussing the life and work of Charles Darwin. Would you like to work with him more? Yes! David invented television science documentaries, which everyone tends to forget about. And also then ran BBC2 for a while and I think he commissioned Monty Python so he’s got a track record that will never be matched. What is your favourite planet? The correct answer is this one. Jeff Bezos said that the one thing we’ve learnt from space exploration is that this is the best planet. Beyond Earth, we can just about live on Mars; it has water below the surface and it’s got everything we need to live on it. Beyond this solar system, it’s another story... we’ve discovered another 3,000 planets, so we do think there are other earth-like planets with a nice atmosphere and oceans.
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Is there life out there? The reason I would guess yes, is that life began on earth very soon after it’s formation, so it only took 100 million years at most which is not a long time to produce life, which suggests there is a sense of inevitability. Do you think we’ll discover it in our lifetime? Yeah, well the next lander that is going to Mars is a European lander, which is built to look for life, so we are confident enough it might be there that we are going to look. If we do find anything they’ll be single cell organisms, not civilisations, as the probability that another planet began life before Earth is extremely small; which is why I go back to your previous question as to what is my favourite planet - it’s Earth, as not many planets have civilisation... and beer! STAGE: Stars of stage and screen trod the boards at the Curtain Theatre for ‘Women of the World.’
LITERATURE FESTIVAL PACKS A PUNCH Internationally renowned poet Simon Armitage CBE read some of his latest poetry collections at a sold-out St Chad’s Church in Rochdale for the finale of this year’s Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival.
Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, community and culture who introduced some of the events said the festival was a success: “We’ve had a real mix of well-known international names, prolific writers and also some less celebrated guests and workshops playing to full houses. It was another diverse programme which helped attract a wide audience and the last eight days have been a real showcase of creativity and imagination. Ticket sales are up 10% on last year and the number of positive comments we have received from far and wide is superb. What struck me day after day was the quality of the performances and the amazing talent on show. I would like to thank the team responsible for delivering another superb festival, our sponsors JGM Agency, and The Royal Toby Hotel for looking after our guests so well.” The festival, being staged for the sixth time, began with the premiere of ‘A Different Story of Rochdale’ by local young writer Danny Lamb and a new piece, ‘Streaks’, by Rochdale Youth Theatre.
FINALE: Simon Armitage CBE read some of his latest poetry collections at a sold-out St Chads Church in Rochdale.
Over the eight-day festival hundreds of people watched top literary names that also included Louise Minchin, Baroness Floella Benjamin OBE, Stuart Maconie, Dr Helen Pankhurst and Gervase Phinn. More than 1,700 tickets were sold – with hundreds more attending un-ticketed events throughout the festival and warm up shows earlier in October. The festival proved a big hit, across all ages, with 13 sold out performances and good audiences across the week. 8
Three top crime authors - Isabelle Grey, Elly Griffiths and William Shaw - discussed their work in ‘Crime Files: Serial Offenders’ – looking at what it’s like to revisit the same characters, book after book. For young people aged 14 to 25, ‘Generation Z’ events included pupils from Falinge Park High School performing their own work during an evening of open mic poetry hosted by spoken word artist Adisa the Verbaliser. Writer and broadcaster Stuart Maconie shared stories and insights from his recent retracing of the famous Jarrow March during an entertaining evening at St Chad’s Parish Church. Author Stephanie Butland discussed her latest novel ‘The Curious Heart of Ailsa Rae’ over afternoon tea at Rochdale Town Hall and broadcaster Louise Minchin presented the most motivating event at the festival, talking candidly about her new book ‘Dare to Tri’.

British Indian storyteller Peter Chand and UK music producer PKCthefirst brought their sublime and sometimes surreal work to life at Touchstones with over an hour of poetry and humorous tales from India, accompanied by the sound of a live DJ mix.
Local wine bar Vicolo del Vino welcomed four top stand-up comedians for an evening of ‘Mirth & More’ and the Fringe Festival, hosted by All Across the Arts, saw several local authors and performers take to the stage at Rochdale’s Vibe music venue.
Stars of stage and screen were treading the boards at the Curtain Theatre for ‘Women of the World’ on Sunday, mixing classic poetry with contemporary work and music. Professional actors Mina Anwar, Krissi Bohn, Hannah Ellis Ryan and Sue Devaney starred in the afternoon hosted by director Joyce Branagh.
The festival was organised by Rochdale Borough Council, sponsored by creative digital media company JGM Agency and The Royal Toby Hotel, supported by Arts Council England.
There were lots of fun activities for families over the weekend author and storyteller Richard O’Neill presented a live interactive reading of his latest story – ‘Polonius the Pit Pony’. There was a kids’ Silent Disco at Touchstones and local company Brown’s Cakes held Dennis the Menace and Friends Cupcake Faces classes, giving everyone a chance to make a character from icing.
FAMILY: John Piper returned to present his puppet show to a sold out crowd.
CRIME AUTHORS: Isabelle Grey, William Shaw and Elly Griffiths.
MYSTERY: Beth Underdown, author of The Witchfinder’s Sister, at Number One Riverside.
STORYTIME: Author and storyteller Richard O’Neill presented a live interactive reading of his latest story – Polonius the Pit Pony.
HUMOUR: Writer and broadcaster Stuart Maconie.
PLAY SCHOOL: Baroness Floella Benjamin OBE.
PUPIL POETRY: Pupils from Falinge Park High School performed their own work during an evening of open mic poetry.
The festival is aimed at celebrating and promoting the Maskew Collection of classic literature and philosophy at Rochdale Central Library, encouraging people to engage with books and ideas. Annie and Frank Maskew, a Rochdale couple who shared a passion for reading and thinking, met in Rochdale Library in the 1950s and left a sum of money to be used on resources and events related to literature and philosophy to ensure classic works are available for future generations.
JOURNEY: Broadcaster Louise Minchin talked about her new book Dare to Tri.
NEW TALENT: The festival began with the premiere of ‘A Different Story of Rochdale’ by local young writer Danny Lamb.
MIXING IT UP: British Indian storyteller, Peter Chand and UK music producer PKCthefirst brought their sublime and sometimes surreal work to life.

ROCHDALE TOWN CENTRE IS ALIVE AFTER FIVE this festive season
Rochdale is quickly building a reputation for heart-warming food and drink with its vast selection of welcoming pubs, bars and restaurants. If you’ve not been into the town centre in the evening for a while you may be surprised as the wide variety of pubs, bars and eateries on offer. There’s no need to venture further afield this festive season, with mouth-watering menus, award-winning pubs and bars all on your doorstep! The ‘Alive After Five’ campaign is designed to ensure the town centre is vibrant after 5pm by promoting Rochdale’s wide variety of exciting food and drink outlets. It has proved a huge success so far, bringing Rochdalians and visitors from further afield flooding back into the town in the evenings.
There’s something for everyone; Mediterranean dishes at La Mancha, modern British cuisine at Madisons Restaurant, great cakes and bakes at Touchstones’ Arts Café, The Riverside Restaurant, China City World Buffet, specialist wine and gin at Vicolo del Vino and well-loved pubs like The Baum, Medicine Tap, The Wellington, the Regal Moon and Yates where there are over 60 cask ales on tap. And not forgetting The Flying Horse, which was judged Greater Manchester’s Pub of the Year by the Campaign for Real Ale.
10
All venues are within a five-minute walking distance of each other.
Paul Ambrose, town centre manager, said: “Over the last few years, the food and drink offered in the town centre has grown considerably with the likes of the Medicine Tap and the Wellington opening. The town centre is fast becoming known as a great place to wine and dine with friends.” Councillor John Blundell, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Business, Skills & Employment, said: “We have many fantastic pubs, bars and restaurants who work hard, and they deserve this recognition and local support... Rochdale is currently undergoing extensive regeneration, and what better way to show off what our flourishing town centre can offer? Support your local economy and see what Rochdale has for you.” Heidi Crompton, who runs The Baum, and manager Dan Brett, said: “This is all about bringing the community spirit back to Rochdale... It’s dispelling that myth that you need to travel into Manchester for a good drink. There are loads of really good places locally that strive for high standards and high quality. Rochdale is comfortable and homely, which is a feeling you just can’t get anywhere else.”

LES
DENNIS
&
CONNOR MCINTYRE
CORONATION STREET’S SWORN ENEMIES ARE BACK TOGETHER! OH YES THEY ARE! This Christmas, Connor McIntyre and Les Dennis will be starring as Ugly Sisters in Cinderella at the Opera House, Manchester. Connor first stepped onto the cobbles in 2014, as the infamous Pat Phelan. He was named Villain of the Year at the British Soap Awards for two years running. TV legend Les Dennis, played Michael Rodwell in the soap for two years, until he was left for dead by murderous Phelan. The pair have now teamed up for a joint reign of terror – making Cinderella’s life a misery! Style caught up with the duo to discuss the cobbles, Christmas dinner and life in Pantoland… 12
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Style: How did you end up playing Ugly Sisters together? Les: I went to last year’s production of Dick Whittington and saw the announcement in the programme for this year’s Cinderella. My wife Claire said wouldn’t it be great if Connor was to do it and Michael and Phelan were back together again! So I got on to the director Michael Harrison and suggested the idea. Connor: I thought what a great idea. What a perfect antedote to playing Pat Phelan. This is my first ever panto and how lucky am I? My first panto and I get to do it in Manchester with my great mate Les Dennis!
Any hints as to what we should expect from Michaela and Phelana? Connor: They are two baddies but one is badder than the other, but which way around is probably up for grabs. But they truly are panto baddies. Les: You can expect lots of Corrie gags, funny material about being the ugly sisters and really upsetting Cinderella of course... that’s our job! Connor: That’s our greatest delight.
Cinderella runs from Sat 8th Dec until Sun 30th Dec at the Opera House, Manchester. Tickets are on sale now starting at just £12. www.atgtickets.com/Manchester
Have you had a peek at your costumes yet and who has the most extravagant? Connor: Well I do, obviously! Les: We’ve had a peek at our opening costumes and in fact we’ve worn our opening costumes more than once for press shoots. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg - I reckon we’ve got about five or six changes of costumes.
Which has the most gruelling schedule, Coronation Street or Cinderella? Les: My Corrie schedule was sometimes gruelling and sometimes not, but with panto it is relentless, as you do two shows everyday, and you have to give 100% every show. Connor: If you have a heavy storyline on Coronation Street you are very busy - this is just like one of those condensed storylines and, of course, it’s live. With Corrie there’s no instantaneous response but with theatre you can sort of float on the audience’s energy.
What do you think it is about pantomime that the British public love so much? Les: I think it is a tradition, something that goes back centuries to Dan Leno. Men dressing as women and women dressing as men. The slapstick comedy that’s funny for both children and adults – it’s very much part of English heritage. And Cinderella is the most magical panto of them all, the story is there, the magic is there, the comedy is there – and of course the comical villains. It’s one of those things people get involved in. We can be in rehearsals doing all the gags but we don’t know if they work until we get there with the extra member of the cast - which is the audience. They are invaluable; what they give us is so important for us to feed off.
Connor, it’s quite a long way back home to Plymouth, has Les invited you for Christmas dinner? Connor: Les, with his open heart, already has done! Les: And I will be cooking too!
Thinking back on your time on Corrie, what was your most memorable scene together? Connor: There’s a couple isn’t there, the builders yard scene and the very funny scene when you confront me with Eileen with the crutches. Les: The final scene was amazing, and we even filmed it on my birthday at 1am. I was freezing and lying down but I just had the best time - I even had a birthday cake from the crew! It was wonderful to do my final scene with my mate.
Do you miss the Street? Les: Oh yeah. Connor: Definitely, but in our business or the circus as I call it, we’re brought together for such a short and intense period of time that we make great friends, and we don’t have to see each other every week but we stay in touch. (Continued...)
Connor: Absolutely... what he said! www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Do you both still keep up with the soap?
What do you hope to work on in the future?
Les: I do, I tune in and out. I’ve been out of the country doing a project for a while so it was amazing to just get back and go ‘what’s going on?!’. You’ll see new characters that you don’t even know but then you’ll spot characters like Rita and you know where you are again! Then you can invest in the new characters. That’s the great thing about Coronation Street it’s ever changing but as a viewer you can just dip back in and catch up.
Connor: Nothing immediately in the future but Cinderella is the perfect counterpoint and what a great way to end the year on. We’ll see what next year brings!
Connor: Similarly for me, I’ll be busy down at my studio painting, so I’ll just do a binge and catch up. Les: What’s really surprising is when Gail mentions Michael and you think ‘Oh that was me!’ and everyone is always mentioning Phelan of course. We’re still part of the fabric of it which is nice.
Will your friends at Corrie be coming to watch Cinderella? Connor: No doubt! Les: I did The Addams Family last year at the Lowry and it was a bigger press night than it was in London because everybody from Corrie came along. Everyone I loved from the show was there, so I’m sure they’ll be coming to this as well.
Les: I’ve got something which I’ve already filmed but I cant talk about and I know that’s going out in the new year, but apart from that I don’t know what my next job is after Cinderella. But that’s what our business is about, it’s feast or famine. There can be nothing for a while and then suddenly your agent can call and you have three offers on the table. It’s scary and it’s exciting - you never know what’s around the corner.
What advice would you give to aspiring actors? Les: The best bit of advice I ever heard for aspiring actors came from Richard Briers. He said it’s not enough to want to be an actor, you have to need to be an actor. You’ve got to be able to put up with rejection, sit and wait for the phone to ring and not know when the next job is coming, no matter how well trained you are. If you can deal with that, then hold in there, your chance will come. If you find something you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.
Connor: I would echo that completely, just to follow your bliss, be that an artist, poet or musician, anything vocational. Keep your chestnuts small, and by that I mean make sure your lifestyle doesn’t demand that your at the coalface everyday as you have to live a precarious life. One of Winston Churchill’s most famous speeches apparently just included three words ‘Never Give Up’.
All I want for Christmas is…? Connor: Wow, what a great question… Les: The day off! Just the one day where I can get up with the kids and watch their faces as the day flies by. Connor: All I want for Christmas is some really good news for a person I care very much about.
Finally, what’s your favourite Christmas cracker joke? Les: What’s Santa’s favourite musical artist? Elfish Presley! Connor: What’s an old snowman called? Water! Les: What’s the Queen’s favourite show? The One Show!

finding the balance Style are delighted to welcome our new Health & Wellness Expert, Leah Jade. Having trained in dance from an early age, Leah works as a full time Teacher of Dance at a local secondary school, in addition to her role of Health & Wellbeing Lead across her workplace. Alongside this, she practises yoga and is a consultant for pure, botanically based skincare brand ‘Arbonne’. Leah is passionate about promoting natural and healthful habits in the hope of helping others to find their emotional balance and wellness in the modern world we live in. Finding rituals to realign our mind is the perfect way to help manage stress and improve our overall wellbeing. We all go by the saying of ‘there just aren’t enough hours in the day’ (I am one that used to say this often) yet sometimes fail to take a step back and appreciate those little things around us that actually enable us to think about not having enough time in our days! In this edition, I’d like to share with you some of the practices that I use to sustain my health and wellbeing in every moment of the day... G R AT I T U D E In order to live well we must strive to live with a grateful heart. What are you thankful for? What motivates you to get up in the morning? What positives did your day bring? Rather than wishing for the things you could have, try to adopt an appreciative attitude and count your blessings for the things you do have; a roof over your head, a family, a good circle of friends, or a job that enables you to eat and live well. E AT B E A U T I F U L Having a healthy diet and fuelling your body with good nutrition will improve your mood, body functioning and appearance. Eating nutritionally well doesn’t mean following a specialist diet or eating particularly small portions, it means finding a balance and knowing the basics of good food. Making a conscious effort to pick up healthy foods in the supermarket can make a huge improvement to your lifestyle. It is also a good idea to eat with the seasons. Winter is hibernation time where the box sets come out and the fires come on. This season can be quite difficult on the skin therefore it is important your nutrition includes essential fatty acids, antioxidants and good oils! Key nutritional foods in winter include white fish, sesame seeds, carrots, leeks, oranges, onions, red cabbage, rhubarb and turnips. HEA
H20 It goes without saying that water is a vital part of life. The amount we drink plays a huge part in our general health and wellbeing. Those common feelings of haziness, lack of concentration or irritability can often boil down to dehydration. It is recommended that on average, men and women drink between 2-2.5 litres of water per day. If you do not enjoy water on its own, why not try adding a slice of lemon, cucumber or mint to add natural flavour?

T H E G R E AT O U T D O O R S The countryside we live in is not just a pretty place. Setting out into the beauty of our borough allows us to reduce stress and unwanted tension. Being out in the open air, a park or a walk over the hills just a couple of times a week can have a measurable effect on our mood and mindset. P O S I T I V E S E L F - TA L K The way we speak to ourselves and the people we surround ourselves with can significantly impact our wellbeing. Sometimes we find ourselves having a conversation with ourselves, often subconsciously but small words of kindness and encouragement directed to ourselves on a daily basis enables us to build self-esteem and achieve our goals.
MOVEMENT Not all movement has to be strenuous. Dance and yoga are both types of feel good exercise. It’s difficult to hold on to worry, stress or anxiety when dancing in your living room to your favourite song or concentrating on holding the downward dog with your heels touching the ground. Try not to take yourself too seriously, think about when you danced as a child without a care in the world! It’s supposed to be fun, if all else fails, dance it off! REST & SLEEP How ironic that when we are children we do everything in our power to stay up late and avoid bed time, yet when real life adulthood and responsibilities arise, here we are desperate to climb into bed before 9pm. In our modern world there is very much a ‘power through’ expectation through a constant state of doing right up until lights out. We try to push through even though there are signs that we need to slow down and take a break. Having a sleep supporting routine may be necessary to fully rest and recharge for the recommended 7-9 hours per night. Here are some practices to calm the mind: Breath counting - lying on your back with your palms facing the ceiling, breathe naturally for a few moments before counting as you inhale and exhale. Try to regulate your breathing so the seconds on the inhale match the seconds on the exhale. Make your own Lavender Pillow Spray - 2 tbsp witch hazel / 10 drops lavender essential oil / 6 tbsp water / Small spray bottle T I D Y S PA C E , T I D Y M I N D The environment in which we live and create for ourselves can either enhance or limit our health and wellbeing. Consciously creating a calming home and work environment contributes to higher levels of wellness. Do you go to work to an untidy desk, a dusty keyboard, an unwashed coffee cup or last weeks to do list somewhere on the desk? Just looking at this in a morning can subconsciously raise your stress levels. A neat and organised atmosphere will minimise distraction, enhance productivity and increase efficiency. KINDNESS IS CONTAGIOUS We’ve put together a few ideas on how you can make a positive difference this festive season & new year and spread a little community spirit and friendship; simple steps that will help you to put a smile on someone’s face (and hopefully yours too!).
SUPPORT A LOCAL FAMILY IN CRISIS
CHATTER & NATTER
With 1 in 5 of the UK population now living below the poverty line, food banks play a vital role in the community. Why not make a positive difference to a local family this festive season by donating much-need food supplies.
Style first met Oldham mum Alex Hoskyn back in March 2017, when she launched her Chatty Cafe Scheme; a new initiative to get people talking and reduce loneliness. Rochdale was one of the first boroughs in the country to host a number of Chatter & Natter tables for its residents to use. Now over 500 cafes and restaurants across the country have signed up, including one of the UK’s most popular coffee chains Costa Coffee.
The ‘reverse advent calendar’ is a lovely way of doing this and involves putting one item of food aside each day. You could get the whole family involved by getting children to decorate the box, helping them to understand that Christmas is about giving. Just make sure you drop the box off at your local food bank in good time for Christmas. Last year, Rochdale Foodbank gave three day emergency food supplies to 6614 people in crisis including 2263 children. The foodbank is open 11am - 12.45pm every weekday, at 8 South Parade, Rochdale. Food donations can be dropped off anytime during opening hours. There is also a donation point at the entrance to Tesco, (Silk Street, Sudden) during opening hours. The foodbank urgently need semi-skimmed milk (UHT), sugar and pasta sauces and are also short of items such as breakfast cereals, snacks, coffee, long life fruit juice and tinned meat/ fish/tomatoes/ fruit/spaghetti/ potatoes. Festive items such as Christmas puddings, shortbread and selection boxes are also welcome.
The idea is that cafes dedicate one of their tables to those on their own looking for someone to chat to. Alex came up with the idea when she was a new mum feeling isolated, craving adult conversation. During a visit to a café, Alex observed an elderly lady sat alone, who appeared fed up. At another table she saw a man with additional needs and his carer both looking equally down. “I thought what a positive impact we could have had on each other if we had all sat together” says Alex. “Sometimes just an interaction with another human can brighten your day”. Chatter & Natter tables creates a safe environment for people to talk, whether it’s for five minute chat or an hour or so of good conversation. To find your nearest table go to: www.thechattycafescheme.co.uk

GIVE A CHRISTMAS GIFT
HELP TO MAKE A BIG CHANGE
Rochdale Borough Council is seeking donations to this year’s Christmas Toy Appeal, which helps to make sure local children living in poverty have presents to open on December 25th.
Homelessness rates have risen dramatically across the country, leaving lots of people at risk, especially in cold weather. Big Change Rochdale aims to help vulnerable homeless people get the help they need to get off and stay off the streets.
The annual appeal is organised by the council’s staff-run ‘Giving Back’ charity. It asks residents and staff to buy one extra present at Christmas – a new, unwrapped gift suitable for a child between 0-16 years-old and simply leave it at any local library across the borough by Wednesday 14 December. Council staff, who collected a record 2,300 toys last year, will then make sure they reach the borough’s less fortunate children in time for the big day.
A group of local charities and organisations have teamed up to create a special fund that will be used to provide people with the practical items they need to build new lives away from the streets. The campaign is urging people who live in, work in and visit Rochdale Town Centre to donate money to the fund rather than give money directly to people who are begging on the streets.
Gifts for 0-16 year-olds are all welcome, but especially presents for teenagers that were low in number last year.
For details and opening times of your nearest drop off point visit: www. rochdale.gov.uk/ libraries
(Left) Giving Back charity members Helen Walton and Caroline Wolfenden helping sort the gifts last year, before they were delivered to local children.
DECLUTTER & DONATE! It’s almost the start of a new year and the perfect time to have a clear out of any old or unwanted items. But don’t just ditch them! Drop them off at one of the many local charity shops such as Springhill Hospice, Rochdale RSPCA or Petrus, who can use them to raise much-needed funds.
Research suggests giving money to people who are begging does not help to move them away from the streets and address the complicated mix of problems, which may include mental health issues and drug and alcohol addiction. By giving them money, you are making it easier for them to continue to live on the streets and may be discouraging them from accessing the many support services that are out there. The fund will help provide accommodation and support people to manage a tenancy agreement, furnish a new home, manage income and expenditure, and build a positive productive life in the community away from the streets. You can donate at www.bigchangerochdale.co.uk.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET THIS WINTER With the change in weather it’s more important to look after your feet over the Winter months. Try these tips to keep your feet in tip top condition!
Podiatry & Chiropody Acupuncture Biomechanics Children’s Feet
Change your socks regularly - wearing thicker socks can cause the feet to sweat increasing the risk of fungal infections like Athletes Foot and Fungal Nail. Apply a moisturising cream daily to the bottom of your feet to prevent dry skin prone to cracking. Don’t apply cream between the toes though! Avoid painful chilblains by warming your feet slowly when you come indoors, don't be tempted to place them in front of the fire or use a hot water bottle.

SHANNON
FLYNN
Talented Rochdale actress, Shannon Flynn, is best known for her roles on Waterloo Road, Coronation Street and CBBC’s Dani’s Castle.
This Christmas, Shannon takes on the iconic role of Cinderella at the Opera House, Manchester, with popstar Gareth Gates as her Prince Charming. Joining them are Coronation Street’s Villain of the Year Connor McIntyre alongside his first victim on the soap, Les Dennis, comedian Ben Nickless (Buttons), and soul singer Hayley-Ria Christian (Fairy Godmother) who all hail from the North West, giving this year’s show a distinctly Manchester feel. Style: Are you excited to be playing Cinderella this Christmas? Shannon: I’m super excited, nothing quite gets you in the Christmas spirit like panto does! It’s a fantastic cast list, have you met any of them before? I met Connor briefly when I was on Corrie but we didn’t have any scenes together so it’ll be nice to properly get to know him during the run! He was lovely when I first met him though, and I’ve already hit it off with Hayley who’s playing the fairy godmother and we are sharing a dressing room too so that will be fun. What do you think it is that makes pantomime so special? Pantomime is just good wholesome family fun, there’s nothing quite like it. You’re guaranteed a laugh whether you’re sat in the audience or on the stage. Do you prefer working in television or theatre? It’s hard to say as both tv and theatre are so different and it’s a different buzz. I started in theatre so that will always hold a special place in my heart but the crew when working on television are incredible and it’s nice to be able to watch your work back and see where to improve which is something you can’t do with theatre. We hear your first stage role was in Rochdale? Yes! I am a Rochdale girl so this where I started, I’ve kind of done full circle now as my first ever taste of acting was panto at the
Gracie Fields Theatre where I played Jill in Babes in the Wood! I then went on to play Annie for the Rochdale Amateur Operatic Society which was the most amazing experience. What has been your favourite role up to now? I couldn’t choose a favourite role as all of them have been so much fun in different ways but I guess with Waterloo Road being my first television job at the age of 12, playing Emily James will always stand out to me, I’d love to play her again and see what she’s up to now. (Photo: Shannon as Emily James on the front cover of Style back in 2009)
What would you love to work on in the future? I really want to keep pushing with both my acting and presenting so I’m open to options really on what might be next. Although I’d love to be in a real gritty northern drama. All I want for Christmas is... Happiness, as cheesy as it sounds! I just want to be with my friends, family and boyfriend enjoying the festive season, the rest is a bonus. What’s your New Year’s Resolution? To make sure I stay motivated to achieve what I want from life... and maybe lay off the chocolate a bit! Cinderella runs from Saturday 8th December to Sunday 30th December at the Opera House, Manchester and tickets are on sale now, starting at just £12 - www.atgtickets.com/Manchester

ROCHDALE ILLUSTRATOR & AUTHOR: PATSY & TOM ALLEN Style recently caught up with Littleborough couple, Patsy and Tom Allen, illustrator and author of popular children’s book series, The Rainbow Scarecrows, published in the early 90’s. Twenty-eight years later, the environmental message of their books is even more significant, as they release their latest publication and introduce us to Buzzbee the duckling!
Style: How did you first get into writing/illustration? Patsy: I knew I wanted to be a book illustrator from the age of 7 and never gave up that dream. At 14, I sold my first painting. I embarked on an art course at college then went into advertising, where I learned to design and illustrate on demand. After trying to get into book illustrating, I decided to come up with my own idea and story, with the help of my husband, Tom. Tom: I had always wanted to be a writer of adult fiction but found that I could turn my hand to children’s books. As a teacher, I had a feel for the sort of stories that children enjoy. This meant that we had a full package to present to an agent and then on to a publisher who offered us a deal for six books, The Rainbow Scarecrows, which were incredibly successful. Where did you find the inspiration for your latest book? Patsy: This story began 28 years ago as a series of wordless vignettes in our first environmental books, The Rainbow Scarecrows. We always wanted to progress these stories for children but never got the time. With the birth of our grandson, it made us think again about the future of our world. In the last few decades not enough has happened to improve our environment.
discuss important or difficult issues, such as the environment, which could otherwise be overwhelming for them. Stories can spark ideas and inspire children to seek further information and write their own stories. Will there be more new releases? Tom: We have planned another five stories in this series which the publisher is keen to develop. What do you think made the Rainbow Scarecrows series so popular? Tom: The Rainbow Scarecrows were so popular because, we like to think, that the scarecrows were like children. They had little power and were not perfect, but if they worked together as a team, they could learn as they went along and make a difference. Patsy: When designing the scarecrows, we wanted them childorientated, even down to the highly detailed and colourful illustrations. This was not fashionable at the time so we had many battles with the publishers. We are still amazed that the books still sell second-hand, especially on Amazon.
What’s the story? Patsy: The story is about a day in the life of a little duckling, his family and friends. They discover the hazards caused by litter and do their best to work together to solve them. It is a gentle environmental book for younger children about their local environment and the world around them. It shows how small actions can lead to big improvements, however young you are. Signed copies are available at Touchstones. The books are available from Amazon, but any good bookshop can get them online for you. Do you think that children’s literature has an important role to play in highlighting current issues? Tom: Twenty-eight years ago we were all waking up to problems in the environment and we used The Rainbow Scarecrows to carry the message into schools. We would like to think that Buzzbee could carry on spreading that message too. In stories, it is possible to 28
Do you have any tips for parents/carers on how they can encourage their child’s imagination? Patsy: All children love story-telling. Sit down and read with them and interact with them within the story. Encourage them to develop their own stories. Go on the website www.patsyallen.net for free downloadable 3D worksheets for children. What advice would you give to aspiring writers or illustrators? Patsy: Never give up, believe in yourself. Your story or illustration might not be wanted now, but it might very well be in the future.

It’s an undeniable fact of life that everyone loves a good sandwich but bread when it comes to this underrated, portable feast. So, I think it’s Here are a few of my favourites to kick you off with and together, one You can find loads more of my recipes
ULTIMATE LEFTOVER SANDWICH This is the definitive guide to using your leftover roast dinners for maximum sandwich based enjoyment, it’s all about balance and when you get it right, it’s so, so right. Any leftovers will do but here we’ve used: Ingredients: 2 roast potatoes 4 good slices of roast turkey (plus extra skin) cauliflower cheese stuffing cold turkey gravy pickled red cabbage floured muffin
32
Method Pop your stuffing, turkey skin and cauliflower cheese on a tray and pop into a pre heated oven on about 180ºC, for about 10/12 minutes - enough to heat through your stuffing and cauliflower, and so the turkey skin goes extra crispy. Get your roasties and throw them into a frying pan on a low light. Squash them down a little so they’ll behave better on the bread, as you do this the fat on the outside of your roasties should render out and begin to fry them into deliciously crisp morsels. If you buy your roasties pre made these won’t be anywhere near as good, but then you deserve it.
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Once everything is hot, butter your muffin and put some cauliflower on the bottom, top with some cold slices of turkey and then your roasties and stuffing. Chop up your crispy skin a little then lash that on, along with some red cabbage for a bit of crunch and sharpness, spread a little cold gravy onto the top layer of muffin and put the whole thing together. Think about having another nap.

t lately we’re getting all too content with the same old limp lettuce and soggy about time we ramped up our sandwich game Rochdale and I’m here to help! e butty at a time, we’ll start giving the sandwich the centre stage it deserves! s on my new website: www.tommcneeney.com
SAMOSA SANDWICH Couldn’t be easier, this is comfort food turned up to 11. Now either use homemade samosas for this or buy them in, doesn’t matter but please just make sure they have a flaky pastry rather then a filo, believe me, it’s for the best. Makes 1 incredible sandwich. Ingredients 4 small samosas, veggie ones work best 1 crusty roll fresh tomato, sliced red onion, sliced 50ml natural yoghurt handful mint leaves handful coriander leaves 50ml mango puree fresh red chill, finely diced Method Pop your oven on 180ºC, lash in your samosas to heat up (or cook as per the instructions)
MUFFULETTA This big, pressed sandwich is an absolute crowd pleaser. Full of big, punchy flavours it’s so much better if you leave it a few hours for the bread to soak up some of the goodness from the olive salad. Ingredients: 8 slices mortadella 10 slices spicy salami 10 slices salami 9 slices mozzarella cheese 10 slices smoked ham 150g mixed olives (stoned) jarred red peppers pickled chillies pickled vegetables chornicons pickled garlic or any other pickled or jarred veg 4 tbsp red wine vinegar 1 tsp Italian seasoning 1 whole loaf, we’ve used a seeded cob here
Combine the yoghurt with some nicely shredded mint leaves and a little squeeze of lemon juice. You can use mint sauce if you’d prefer, about teaspoon’s worth. Mix together your mango pulp and red chilli.
decent layer of your mint yogurt over the bottom of the bread. Top with some tomato and red onion, smash down the samosas slightly then pile as many as you dare onto the sandwich.
A few minutes before your samosas are ready slightly wet the roll and pop it into the oven. Once everything’s good and warm, cut open your roll and spread a
Top with some freshly torn coriander and a little of your chilli and mango sauce. Cram the lid on and give the whole thing a gentle press, then enjoy, immensely.
Method For the olive salad throw all your pickles, olives and chillies into a colander. Once they’ve drained a little give them a fine chop and transfer to a bowl with the vinegar and seasoning, give a good mix and set to one side. Open your bread up to make one massive sandwich, you might find it helps to take out a little of the inside of the loaf too. Begin to layer up your sandwich adding a little of the olive salad between alternate layers of cold meats and mozzarella pressing it as you go, once all the meat and cheese has been used up add all the leftover olive salad and any dressing to the top and add the lid. Clingfilm the the lot and place on a baking tray, top with another and try to pile some weight on top, anything will do, just to press it down and hold it there. Keep it like this for a good hour or overnight in the fridge. Cut into enormous wedges and devour! www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

The Aesthetic Rooms By Zoe Pearson is a nurse led clinic in Norden, Rochdale. Owner Zoe has been working in aesthetics for over 12 years and opened the clinic in 2017. The clinic offers a range of specialist anti-aging and skin enhancing treatments. Real Housewives of Cheshire, Ampika Pickston, recently visited the clinic for a glamorous event launching the Million Dollar Facial.
Working the skin from the outside in, this treatment has been designed to deeply exfoliate dead skin cells and remove non terminal hair, polish the skin, flush toxins, increase and stimulate our natural collagen and cell turnover. This method will heavily increase the absorption of any active ingredients by 80% as opposed to 8%, a hyaluronic acid mask for maximum results.
The most sought after treatment available in the clinic is wrinkle injections, starting at £100, where a muscle relaxing injection is used to target fine lines and wrinkles creating a smoother, younger looking skin. Frown lines between the eyebrows can be softened and crows feet around the eyes can be diminished with this treatment favoured by many clients for the subtle yet effective results. Dermal fillers are another popular treatment in the clinic, especially for the lips. A hyaluronic acid based gel is injected into the lip to enhance, define and volumise. Dermal fillers also work well for the treatment of deeper lines on the lower face and can help to lift and restore volume loss in the cheeks and lower face. One of the newest techniques used with dermal fillers is the ‘air brush’ injections where very fine lines creating a crepy looking skin can be treated with an ultra fine filler to improve the texture and smooth the skin. THE AESTHETIC ROOMS HAVE A BRAND NEW WEBSITE!
For more information on all of the treatments and to look at the portfolio of before and after treatments go to: www.theaestheticrooms.co.uk GIFT VOUCHERS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE CLINIC AND CAN ALSO BE PURCHASED ONLINE.

CHARLIE CHAPLIN’S VISIT TO ROCHDALE Walking past Newgate House - now the headquarters of Tetrosyl - it is hard to imagine that the first international film star played in a theatre on that site just over 100 years ago. This was where Rochdale’s Hippodrome stood. It was rebuilt in 1908 to replace an earlier wooden building, known as the Circus. Publicity at the time described the theatre as an “Ideal Family Resort” with comfortable seating for 1800 people. The theatre had a temperance bar at the rear of the circle, obviously aimed at encouraging a non-alcoholic family clientele. In January 1910 Fred Karno’s Company Of Comedians appeared at the Hippodrome, twice- nightly for a whole week. Charlie Chaplin topped the bill with a “New and Original Absurdity” called Skating. One can only imagine how Chaplin’s superb comic miming skills were put into such a performance. In the supporting cast of 30 was young Stanley Jefferson from Ulverston; this was Stan Laurel’s original name long before he met Oliver Hardy! Middleton born Steve Coogan is about to appear as Stan in a new film about Laurel and Hardy. Charlie Chaplin was born in London in 1889 in terrible poverty with an alcoholic father and mentally ill mother. He was sent to a workhouse at the age of seven but had developed a talent for performing. Charlie left school at 13 and registered with a theatrical agency. He played a small part in a touring version of Sherlock Holmes and was later in Casey’s Circus. Charlie’s elder half-brother Sydney had joined Karno’s comedy company in 1906 and he managed to get Charlie a fortnight’s trial with them. Fred Karno considered Charlie a “pale, puny, sullen-looking youngster who looked too shy to do any good in the theatre”! But Charlie made a big impact and soon secured a contract with Karno. After Rochdale the Karno company went on to play other nearby towns in Lancashire and all over England. Both Charlie and Stanley were soon selected to play two American tours for Karno and, six months into the second one, Charlie was invited to join the New York Motion Picture Company, signing a $150 a week contract (about $4000 in today’s money!). He arrived in Los Angeles, home of the Keystone studios, in December 1913. By the time Charlie made his second film, the legendary “tramp” image was born with 36

bowler hat, undersized jacket, cane and large boots. This look remains instantly recognisable to young and old and is still one of the most popular fancy dress costumes. By 1915 Charlie Chaplin was the biggest film star in the world, writing, directing and starring in his own films. “Chaplinitis” spread across America and Charlie was featured in cartoons, comic strips and popular songs. This was just five years after playing Rochdale Hippodrome! There is an extraordinary photograph of Charlie promoting the sale of war bonds in front of thousands of people in New York, alongside fellow stars Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. All three of them went on to form the United Artists film company in 1919.
bought by Rochdale Corporation for use by local amateur dramatic and operatic groups. The Hippodrome was demolished in the 1970’s and Newgate House was built on the site. On the side of the building facing the Memorial Gardens, there is a purple plaque as part of the Gracie Fields trail. Next time you walk past there, just imagine how much laughter and enjoyment was created there over the last century. Richard Lysons
By 1920 Charlie’s classic film, The Kid was released, followed by The Gold Rush five years later. It is in the latter film where a starving Charlie resorts to eating his own boots; the boots were actually made of liquorice from Hillaby’s of Pontefract. A quick look at this scene on YouTube will convince anyone of the unique comic genius of Charlie Chaplin, mixed as always - like the best humour - with a touch of sadness. Back in Rochdale, the Hippodrome was thriving with appearances by all the great music hall stars such as Dan Leno, Robb Wilton, George Formby, Sandy Powell and Rochdale’s own Norman Evans and Gracie Fields. It also showed films and eventually became known more as a cinema. Films were shown until 1957 and the building was www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

WINTER WARMERS
Well it’s that time of the year again; dark evenings, Christmas ads dominating the TV schedules, grey days with drizzle punctuated by crisp mornings when you lose all sensation in your hands whilst chiselling ice from your windscreen. As you may be able to ascertain, I’m not the biggest fan of winter. It’s also the time of year when many people’s minds turn their motoring minds to cars with all-wheel drive so it seems the ideal time for me to pick my favourite three all-wheel-drive cars.
SUZUKI JIMNY The previous incarnation of the Jimny has been for a long time one of my favourite little cars. It was almost unchanged in design from its launch 1998 up to very recently. Its only direct competitor, The Daihatsu Terios, was killed off a while ago and since then has had the market virtually to itself.
It came as no surprise therefore when Suzuki recently announced that it was about to launch a brand new Jimny, going on sale from January. Continuing the growing trend to move away from diesels, the new range will be powered solely by a 1.5-litre petrol lump producing 100bhp. Economy is officially listed as 41.5mpg and this will no doubt be helped by the fact that the drivetrain can be switched between two and four wheel drive as well as the option of switching between high and low range depending on conditions. Inside, the new Jimny has been given a fresh look, although most of the gubbins come straight from the Suzuki parts bin and are shared with other models, there are toys available such as air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity and cruise control as standard. The range topping SZ5 adds
40
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
15-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, climate control and satellite navigation. At the time of writing, prices are yet to be officially announced but are expected to start at around £16,000 when the range launches early in the New Year. KIA NIRO Times change and the motoring world moves with it. The prized family car 25 years ago was a Cavalier or a Sierra. These days, many people prefer to be sat higher up with more cabin and boot space that the now well established genre of SUV’s provide. Kia have long been a favourite of the private buyer and earlier this year launched the Niro, their first car, let alone SUV, that comes with a hybrid drivetrain.
I’ll leave it up to you to decide if the Niro is a looker or not but it can certainly be said it’s striking and stands out from the crowd. Inside is more toned down and whilst you will find all the gizmos and technology you need, you will need to plunder the options list to get all those nice little bells and whistles you want on a car in this day and age. The clever part is underneath the car though. The Hybrid powertrain consists of a 104bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine combined with a 43bhp electric motor mounted which are mated to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Kia claim combined fuel economy of 74.3mpg, although this came in much closer to 55mpg on the non-scientific run around town and country I did. An allelectric model plug in model is about to be added to the range which has a claimed range of over 300 miles.
LAND ROVER DISCOVERY When it comes to off roaders, Land Rover has become as eponymous to the genre as Tannoy and Hoover have to their associated products. Although the brand has moved away significantly from its roots in utilitarian working vehicles to the luxury end of the market, the underpinnings, the bits that really matter, are still as suited to mud trails and fording rivers as it is to parking in the supermarket. I have to admit, I wasn’t a fan of the fifth incarnation of the Discovery when it launched early in 2017 but since then, as more have appeared on the road it has softened me as the rest of the Land Rover and Range Rover range have adopted the same design cues. Once you climb inside a Discovery, the quality of the finish and feel of the controls give you that instant confidence in the product. The seating
position can be infinitely tuned to perfection and the vast array of electronic wizardry is instinctive to use. Once you get under way the ride is forgiving and magic carpet smooth making this such an easy car to drive whether it’s popping to the shops for some milk or popping to Naples for a Pizza. There is a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines but my power unit of choice has to be the extremely clever, highly tuned 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol option which churns out a phenomenal 298bhp with enough torque to make the planet move backwards a little each time you set off. Land Rover have just unveiled the 2019 Model Year car which makes some styling adjustments but unfortunately doesn’t address the one flaw that really lets the Discovery down, the placing of that rear number plate. Mark D’Apice
Prices start at £23,490 for the base hybrid Niro with prices for the electric e-Niro yet to be announced. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

MAMMA MIA! Rochdale – the ‘Venice of the North’
Rochdale has been compared to one of the world’s most visited cities by a leading Professor of Architecture.
SCORES ON THE DOORS ROCHDALE v VENICE
Sally Stone, a Reader in Architecture at the Manchester School of Architecture, thinks that the gothic architecture of Rochdale Town Hall and its surrounding buildings compares to major landmarks in Venice like the Doge’s Palace.
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN OCTOBER
After visiting Rochdale as part of a project that will see 45 students from the university’s masters programme work with the council on the Heritage Action Zone, Sally said: “Venice and Rochdale have some splendid examples of gothic architecture and a strong connection to water, with the Rochdale Canal and the newly re-opened river in Rochdale and the Grand Canal in Venice. They also both have lots of fantastic public open space, particularly the area around the town hall and the re-opened river.”

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR NATURAL BEAUTY It’s that time of year again. The one where we vow to ourselves we will be a size ten, with a healthy body and matching bank balance. Where we promise we will spend more time looking after number one and our beauty regime (cue eye roll). How can we look after number one, look better, feel brighter and still have a healthy bank balance I hear you cry? Well, this year, why not start small? Take a look at yourself in the mirror and rather than pointing out the bad bits, focus on the good. What do you like about yourself? What are your best features? What could you make better? Once you’ve identified your best bits (and come on now ladies, don’t be too harsh or over critical) let’s talk about how they can be enhanced for a cost that wont break the bank.
Maybe your SKIN is your best feature? But as with everything it could still be improved? Looking at the basics, namely your cleanse routine and daily skincare is a great place to start. The current trend is glass skin - skin that is clear and radiant. Unachievable you might think with our busy pressured lives, but with simple correct cleansing and skincare this is do-able, affordable and a great way to shine. Once you have a good morning and evening routine, the skin can then be further enhanced with BB and CC creams, highlighters and more. BB and CC creams correct imperfections in the skin and highlighters give that radiance and glow that we all want to achieve - only small amounts of these products are needed daily so, for little outlay they can last 3-6 months.
If LIPS are your best feature then there are great ways to make your lips look fuller and plumper. Lips can de defined, made to appear smaller or fuller simply by applying lip liner skillfully either inside or outside the Do you have beautiful EYES? For natural lip line. To find out more please check our website www.rspca-rochdale. org.uk or alternatively, check out our Facebook page.
WILDLIFE IN WINTER We can all struggle when the weather takes a turn for the worse and our wildlife friends are often the most vulnerable to these extremes so they just need a helping hand sometimes. For advice on protecting and feeding the wildlife in your garden there is useful seasonal advice on the national RSPCA website.
HOW YOU CAN HELP US THIS CHRISTMAS
WILDLIFE Here at the Rochdale Animal Centre we have become a holding centre for wildlife rescued by our inspectors. They receive initial assessment and veterinary treatment before being transferred to the RSPCA Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre by a team of volunteer drivers for eventual release. We have cared for a wide variety of wildlife large and small throughout 2018 like hedgehogs, herons and foxes, all needing our specialist care.
ANIMALS FOR ADOPTION
Our annual ‘Buy a Christmas dinner’ appeal has launched on eBay and will also be in our charity shops and animal centre in December. RSPCA Christmas cards & diaries are now on sale in our shops, animal centre and Wendy Lane Vets.
Saffie is a sweet little lady who came from a multi animal household, covered in fleas and open wounds all over her body. After plenty of TLC, 7 year old Saffie is looking much better and her shiny black fur has started to grow back too. She is a quiet girl who spends most of her time happily watching the world go by from the comfort of a cosy bed. She loves attention and will happily let you make a fuss over her.
This goose was rescued from the Moors after being dumped there with her partner. Sadly her partner was killed by hunting dogs, but this broken hearted girl stayed with his body until she was rescued by one of our inspectors. As a domestic goose her wings had been clipped so she couldn’t fly away and couldn’t have got there by accident. She stayed at the Animal Centre for a few days before going to Stapeley Grange to join the resident gaggle of geese where hopefully, her broken heart will mend. 48
Our ‘Grand Christmas Raffle’ tickets are on sale in our RSPCA charity shops & animal centre. The draw will take place on 15th Dec. We have some fabulous prizes from local companies. Check our Facebook page for details.
We also have three stunning budgies currently in our care. Vicki came to us when her owner could sadly no longer take care of her and Timmy and Tina were being kept in totally unsuitable conditions. After spending several weeks living side by side, all 3 were put together and the trio seem to be much happier! At the time of writing, ideally we are looking for one home for all three budgies to be adopted together.
DONATIONS We always need donations of clothing, bric-a-brac, books, music etc, so please dig deep into your wardrobes and cupboards and find those items you haven’t worn or used for years! Bring them along to your nearest RSPCA Rochdale branch charity shop or to the Animal Centre. If you have large items of furniture or too many bags to carry we’ll gladly pick them up. We can also accept most household appliances, as we are lucky to have the services of a trained PAT tester. GOOD NEWS! We have been selected as the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce Charity Partner in Rochdale for 2018-19. We hope that this partnership will provide lots of opportunities to spread the word and raise awareness of the excellent work done here in Rochdale.
From everyone at RSPCA Rochdale may we wish all our supporters, friends and families, pets and wildlife a safe, warm, healthy and happy Christmas. Deliver kindness to animals this Christmas. Lets’s put an end to animal cruelty.

BAMFORD CHAPEL - TWO WEDDINGS, BATMAN AND A ROCK STAR The superb, recent “Heritage Days” gave us a chance to take a look around the glorious Bamford Chapel and graveyard and enjoy some very interesting archives.
was built in the early 1860’s and contains the “Fenton Chapel” built and paid for by a later Joseph to use as his private chapel, this completed in 1862 with fine stained glass windows.
Built in 1801 it is a result of a marriage between two highly influential families. The Fentons had been landowners in the locality since 1565 whilst also building a very successful textile empire. Members of the family were to take residence in the nearby Crimble, Plumton and Bamford Halls with the family owning mills at Crimble and Meadowcroft and later building one at Hooley Bridge. Joseph founded “Fenton’s Bank” in 1819 with its first branch on lower Yorkshire Street before expanding to branches in Bury and Heywood. He also steadily added properties and land in other areas thus building the families fortune.
The Kays had a textile empire in Bury and surrounding areas (John Kay had invented the “Flying Shuttle” in 1834 which revolutionised weaving).
The family attended St. Lukes in Heywood which was, then, a much smaller chapel. The present church 52
Joseph Fenton married Ann Kay in 1789, thus joining the two wealthy and influential families. They had two sons, John and James. The Kays were non-conformists and were devout Congregationalists. Ann’s brother, Robert, welcomed the chance to develop a congregation close to Ashworth and Bamford, both sparsely populated and rural areas. Joseph and Ann had moved into Bamford Hall and gave a plot of land on Butterworth Farm for the new chapel to be built. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Memorial plaques to Joseph and Ann along with Robert adorn the interior wall of the chapel and several generations of the Fenton family have gravestones which can still be seen in the graveyard. The early 1800’s saw serious poverty and poor living conditions with infant mortality, in particular, very high. The years from the mid 1830’s to the mid 1840’s, for example, saw a great many deaths through disease such as cholera and the churchyard’s gravestones attest to the fact that many were children (including the Fenton’s own) The Fentons were said to be good and conscientious employers at a time when some residents in the surrounding area may have been less lucky and found their way to the very grim workhouses situated locally at Spotland or Dearnley. It was also a time of industrial unrest. Riots broke out in 1826, for example,
and the Kays had several new power looms destroyed in their mills in surrounding areas by desperate handloom weavers, intent on stopping progress which threatened their livelihood. In 1832 Joseph’s son, John, became the first M.P. for Rochdale and is commemorated with a marble bust in Rochdale Town Hall. However, Ann had died the year before, in 1831 with Joseph dying a decade later in 1841. John’s son Roger studied at Oxford and went on to achieve fame as a photographer. He worked with the Tsar in Russia and Prince Albert at Buckingham Palace. In 1855 he became the world’s first war photographer when he went to the Crimea. A blue plaque to commemorate Roger Fenton can be found on the wall of the Crimble.
In 1987 the football manager, Ron Atkinson who lived close by on Jowkin Lane, led a team of celebrities against a chapel team on its adjoining sports field.
In the 1860’s, though, Fenton’s Bank went bankrupt. Several factors would seem to be responsible along with errors of judgement by family members involved within it. Their mill
The chapel has also hosted the BBC cameras for national television. It would be hard, however, to contemplate an event involving the rock star, Rick Wakeman who presented a concert there in 1999. Rick played with the hugely popular band, Yes, with his trade mark silver cape and surrounded by a huge array of keyboards. He was also a prolific session musician, famously playing on the David Bowie hit “Space Oddity” which is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary!
at Hooley Bridge also closed after much trouble with newly installed machinery. The Fenton family dispersed after this collapse with some going to America.
Rick’s fan club had been run by Jonathan Brierley from his house in Bamford from the early 70’s during which Jonathan and Rick became friends. The concert was arranged to celebrate the wedding of Rick’s friend at the chapel. Rick couldn’t be at the original wedding and was greatly disappointed. He asked Jonathan to arrange a concert there which would ensure that all those involved could be present, once again. The groom had built the Batmobile at his coachbuilders in Norden for the hugely successful 1989 blockbuster “Batman” film.
Their legacy, Bamford Chapel, survived and looking through the archives there is evidence of many surprising events held there. In 1980, as part of Rochdale Festival it hosted the first of its rock concerts. The Bill Mason Band played their gospel /punk to a full house.
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Rick wrote special music to honour the wedding and presented the proud couple with a framed copy of the sheet music. He also presented gifts of signed cd’s to a fan who couldn’t attend due to serious illness. A true star! As a huge Manchester City fan, Rick often wore a sky blue suit, shirt and tie. Jonathan was pictured with Rick in that attire “backstage” at the event. I am grateful to Louise Aspinall of the chapel for her kindness in offering a copy of the original advertisement used to promote this event. It took very little advertising, though, to fill the church to capacity for this unprecedented concert! Bamford Chapel has had recent renovations with lovely old pews reclaimed to use in the present décor. The place is always busy with services and group events such as a film club and music recitals. As we discovered, a warm welcome comes as standard! Paul Brady

JIMMY CRICKET STRIKES COMEDY GOLD WITH NEW PLAY REVIEW: No More Fiffing and Faffing The Empire Theatre Blackburn Rochdale comedian Jimmy Cricket has penned a new comedy concentrating on the relationship of a summer season double act. This new comedy cleverly splits the action between the backstage dressing room where the comedians are preparing for their final performance together at the end of the pier show in Clusters-on-Sea. We soon establish this is not just the end of their summer season, but also their last performance together as a long standing double-act. They may be going their separate ways but Jerry Faffen, played by Jimmy Cricket, is frustrated the act is splitting up after his partner Joe Fiffen, played by Jonathan Young, has found the security of regular employment at the local Jolly Roger hotel as their entertainment manager.
The end of their relationship is heightened on their last night by the atrocious weather causing the local health and safety man to possibly call the show off, with concerns over possible structure problems to the theatre pier. The comic action is fast moving as we see the summer season show performed by Fiffen & Faffan, with stage manager Archie played by Colin Meredith, determined that the show must go on whatever the weather and the health and safety man throws at them. The audience are highly entertained by this clever play which highlights not only the relationship of the two comedians but also gives an insight into the changing face of modern comedy. The audience are treated to some drama in the dressing room contrasted with the comic genius of Jimmy Cricket and Jonathan Young, performing their seasoned double act. This comedy has something for everyone and hopefully will be seen again by audiences after the buzz it created after its world premiere in Blackburn.

Now here’s a really gutsy, hearty dish. The lamb shank cooks best using a method of cooking where there’s plenty of moisture such as braising, stewing or very slow roasting done over a long period of time. This dish can be served straight away, or done the day before, refrigerated and reheated 20 minutes before serving. That makes it ideal for stress-free entertaining.
Andrew Nutter CELEBRITY CHEF
CLASSIC BRAISED LAMB SHANK WITH PORT REDUCTION Serves 4 Ingredients: 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 lamb shanks about 1lb each 1 carrot – diced 1 stick celery – diced 2 clove garlic – chopped 1 onion – chopped Sprigs thyme and rosemary 200ml Port 200ml red wine 800ml beef stock To Serve: Crushed potatoes, onions, baby parsnips, carrots and herb sprigs 58
1)
Heat the olive oil in a casserole pan and brown the lamb shanks on all sides.
2)
Add the carrot, celery, garlic and onion and soften, then add the thyme, rosemary, Port, red wine and beef stock.
3)
Cover with tin foil and place in a hot oven 150˚c for about 2½ hours until tender – check half way through to ensure there is enough liquor for the lamb to braise in.
4)
Remove from oven and leave to cool.
5)
Pass off about 400ml of the cooking liquor, place in a pan and reduce by half – this forms your finished lamb sauce.
6)
When ready to serve, arrange the hot potatoes and vegetables on a plate, place the lamb on top and finish with the hot lamb sauce spooned over.

roles, including driving the Day Hospice patients to and from the Hospice, helping in the kitchen, reception duties and helping in the finance department. Between them they have over 40 years of volunteering experience!
From the fulfilment of helping others, rising to a new challenge or nurturing a new friend group, the feeling of satisfaction enjoyed by Springhill Hospice Volunteers is enormous. COMMUNITY NEWS ROCHDALE’S INDOOR MARKET OPENS ITS DOORS Rochdale’s brand new indoor market has now opened its doors to the public. The Rochdale Market Foodhall and Café is now operating from the former Santander building on The Butts, following a £750,000 transformation spearheaded by the council and Rochale Development Agency (RDA). The new market boasts a traditional butcher’s, a bakery and a greengrocer, as well as a café on the first floor which surrounds the building’s newly-constructed atrium. Stephen Bamford, who currently owns and manages Cryer’s butchers in Littleborough, has opened his latest venture, Rochdale’s Choice Family Butchers, within the market and is raring to go. He said: “The indoor market looks great and being close to a greengrocer’s and bakery is ideal, as it’s your classic market offer. Traditional butchers like ours are becoming very popular now because people know that if they buy from us, all their meat is locally-sourced and good quality.” And the owners of brand new café, Montague’s, are hoping to bring a taste of the Northern Quarter to their unit on the first floor with breakfast offerings like waffles with maple syrup and fruit compote and avocado on toast, as well as homemade cakes, freshly made sandwiches, soup and speciality pastries.
“I’ve always really believed in Rochdale town centre and our new unit is beautiful, particularly with its panoramic views over the River Roch and Rochdale Town Hall. The area around the newly reopened river is really blossoming and turning into a mini Northern Quarter, with new bars and restaurants, like the Medicine Tap and the Wellington. I think our offer here will really add to this mix”. The indoor market will operate alongside the outdoor market next to the re-opened river. The indoor market will be open Monday to Saturday, from 9am and 5pm, while the outdoor market is open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9am and 5pm. Councillor Allen Brett, leader of Rochdale Borough Council, said: “A high-quality market is a crucial part of any successful town centre and I know our new market will play a major role in our redeveloped town centre, which is in the middle of a £400m transformation programme. “I’m proud to welcome such high-quality businesses into our brand new indoor market and am particularly pleased to hear that they are all existing Rochdale businesses, which are expanding and in many cases, creating new jobs. The new market will perfectly complement our new shopping and leisure development, Rochdale Riverside, and I’m confident it will go down very well with our residents and visitors.”
Owners Debra McGinty and Anna Barber will be sourcing their ingredients from other stalls within the market to celebrate the borough’s cooperative tradition. Debra, from Heywood, said:
ROCHDALE FIREFIGHTER RUNS IN MEMORY OF MANCHESTER ATTACK VICTIMS A firefighter from Rochdale has taken on a gruelling charity challenge - running 22 10K races in memory of the 22 victims of last year’s tragic Manchester Arena attack. Aaron Parmar was a police officer at the arena on the night of the attack and witnessed the physical and emotional devastation caused. Since moving to the fire service, he’s decided to show his support for the victims by running 220 kilometres (137 miles), which began with the Williams BMW Rochdale 10K in his hometown. Aaron commented: “Coming from Rochdale, I wanted the first 10K to be in my hometown. I am raising money for the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund which is managed by the British Red Cross who did a fantastic job in supporting the victims and their families during that harrowing time and who continue to support them today”. Aaron has raised over £3000 so far. You can sponsor him via his Just Giving Page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/aaronleegmfrs

ROCHDALE’S SINGING JEWELLER DONATES TO SAVE SAMANTHA APPEAL
ICONIC TOWN CENTRE STORE RELOCATES TO NORDEN
Rochdale’s singing jeweller John Swinden has donated a cheque for £1,000 to the Save Samantha Appeal to match funds raised at an afternoon tea.
After almost 60 years in the town centre, one of Rochdale’s best known independent shops, Denis Hope, have now closed their Drake Street store and re-opened in Norden village, as HOPE.
Mr Swinden donated the cheque for £1,043 on behalf of the Liberty Masonic Lodge Rochdale to Gwen Tyler from the Save Samantha Appeal.
The move, headed by Oliver Hope, Denis’ grandson, is already proving a massive hit with existing customers and the locals of Norden village. Oliver said: “This is the start of an exciting new future in Norden. We feel new customers will be surprised as to how much choice we have, not only on formal tailoring, which we are famous for locally, but the casual side of things too.” The store offers well known labels such as Barbour and Ted Baker, as well as one of the biggest Hugo Boss ranges outside of Manchester. Their fantastic suit section includes bespoke and made-to-measure services. The store takes the stress out of shopping, even offering a glass of prosecco, a beer or a cup of tea or coffee while customers browse at their leisure. Oliver commented: “We aim to make it a great environment to shop with the same levels of customer service as started by Denis when we opened. Joining our sister store in Norden also means that couples can now enjoy shopping together. We’re not necessarily the only place you shop, we just want to be your favourite place to shop!”.
A wonderful afternoon of musical entertainment and afternoon tea took place at Littleborough Cricket Club in October, featuring performances by Mr Swinden, Wardle Junior Blast, Natalia Jacques and Sing! Littleborough. Adding to the funds raised on the day, the Save Samantha Appeal has now benefited from an additional £2,446 towards Samantha Smith’s next lifesaving operation. Samantha recently revealed that she is once again fighting for her life after three extensive surgeries did not have the success rate anticipated. Approximately £52,500 has been donated towards Samantha’s next lifesaving operations so far, which are not available in the UK and will cost over £100,000.

OVER 1,000 TAKE TO THE ROAD FOR TOWN’S BIG RACES Hundreds of runners from across the country descended on Rochdale for the annual Williams BMW Rochdale Half Marathon, 10K and Fun Run. The event, now in its fourth year, saw its highest number of entrants with over 1,300 runners registered. They were encouraged every step of the way by hundreds of spectators lining the scenic, traffic-free routes. The races began at Rochdale Town Hall, taking in the town and some of the borough’s best countryside scenes. All runs ended with a final sprint back to the finish line at the town hall, where they were met by hundreds of cheering spectators and a lively atmosphere. The half marathon was won by Benjamin Coop from Bury Athletics Club for the second year in a row. The first female was Carly Needham from Rochdale Harriers. The 10K was won by Thomas Griffiths from St Helens Sutton Athletics Club, while the first female runner was Kirsty Sharp of Glossopdale Harriers. Louis Wakefield, (aged 14) from Macclesfield, won the 1 mile fun run. Full results are available at www.rochdale.gov.uk/run Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for culture, health and wellbeing, who took part in the fun run, said: “I know how much training and hard work has gone in for those running and it was great to see this event continue to attract runners from the North West, across the UK and beyond, we even had an entrant fly over from France. Each year the reputation of this event grows, the weather was perfect with spectators providing much needed encouragement... The event was made possible by the support of many local people, businesses and groups.”
THOUSANDS FALL SILENT TO REMEMBER FALLEN HEROES Thousands gathered across the borough for Remembrance Day Services to honour the nation’s war heroes, commemorating 100 years since the end of the First World War.
For The Fallen: “They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn; At the going down of the sun and in the morning; We will remember them.”
Representatives from the Navy, Army and Royal Air Force joined veterans and civic dignitaries for parades and services in Rochdale town centre, Heywood, Littleborough, Middleton, Norden, Milnrow and Wardle. The crew of HMS Middleton also paraded in Middleton and provided a guard of honour at the memorial.
After the service in Rochdale there was a range of family entertainment to mark the 100 year milestone.
Barely a sound was heard as the Last Post was played and residents gathered for the services, impeccably observing silences at 11am, and at 2:30pm in Wardle. Each included Lawrence Binyon’s 1914 poem

The Mayor, Councillor Mohammed Zaman said: “It’s a special year with this being the 100 year anniversary, although remembrance is about everyone who gave up their lives over many decades. I was proud to represent the borough at the services and once again we saw huge turnouts right across the borough.”
