ROCHDALE FIREFIGHTER RAISES 15K FOR CHARITY IN MEMORY OF MANCHESTER ATTACK VICTIMS A Rochdale firefighter has raised over £15,000 for charity after completing a gruelling challenge - running 22 10K races, in memory of the 22 victims of the Manchester Arena attack. Aaron was a police officer at the arena on the night of the attack and witnessed the physical and emotional devastation caused. After moving to the fire service, he decided to show his support for the victims by running 220 kilometres (137 miles). He began his challenge with the Williams BMW Rochdale 10K and completed his challenge on 19th May with the Great Manchester Run, in memory of eight-year-old Saffie Rose Roussos – the youngest victim. He said: "It has been emotionally difficult seeing all the families at the finish line and a lot of friends and family come out to support me. It has been an epic journey and I’ve loved every minute." "Thank you all, but most of all thank you Saffie for getting me through this race and thank you to all the 22 angels - it has been an honour to do this for you and your families."

Out of the £15,000 raised, £6000 has already been donated to the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund. The remainder will go towards the cost of a Manchester memorial to honour the 22 victims.

BRIAN MCFADDEN “I have the most awesome job in the world and I love what I do, so to get to share that with my best friend is just amazing.
Irish singer-songwriter (and now adopted Rochdalian) Brian McFadden, began his singing career as a member of Westlife in 1998, achieving twelve number one singles. Brian left the group in 2004 to pursue his solo career which led him to several number ones of his own and a successful career as a television and radio presenter in Austrailia. In 2016, Brian formed Boyzlife with former Boyzone member Keith Duffy, and together they have toured around the world, performing some of their greatest hits. Earlier this year, Brian released his latest album 'Otis', which pays tribute to soul legend Otis Redding. In March, he also made it through to the semi-final of ITV's Dancing on Ice alongside dance partner Alex Murphy. Style caught up with Brian to chat about life in Rochdale with girlfriend Danielle, his love for soul music and his exciting future plans... 4
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Style: You’ve been on the road with some intimate gigs during your Soul Jam tour. How did they go? Brian: The shows went really well, I love doing intimate gigs. I plan to keep doing those alongside the bigger Boyzlife shows. You’re known for your pop style but your new album 'Otis' shows a very different side to you. Is the album something you’ve been wanting to make for a while? Yes, most of my albums have varied in style, I enjoy new challenges with every album I make. A soul album was something I’ve wanted to do for many years. To deliver a proper soul album you need life experience which is why I waited almost 20 years. You’re back on tour with Keith Duffy as your singing duo Boyzlife… any plans for an album? Yes, we are planning to release an album around Christmas time followed by a full tour in 2020!
You blew everyone away on Dancing on Ice earlier this year - have you been ice skating since? No unfortunately, I haven’t got time at the moment but will definitely get it in at some point. I want to teach Danielle some moves! You've said that Dancing on Ice really helped you to get fit and we hear you’re still on a massive health kick? Yes I felt amazing after the show, so we have started training with David Green (Strongest Version) to try and build on it now. We focus on diet obviously, along with strength training in the gym. The strength training is helping my golf too! What’s your handicap? Recently just got reduced to 8!
You’ve had gigs all over the world recently. Where has been your favourite place to visit? South Africa is beautiful, we went on safari which was incredible and the scenery is beautiful. Can’t fault the weather either! Your girlfriend Danielle now works with your PR team – are you having fun travelling around together? Well I have the most awesome job in the world and I love what I do, so to get to share that with my best friend is just amazing.
You’re a very busy man but what do you get up to during your time off? I play as much golf as possible and catch up with family and friends. Just taking some down time is really nice when you’ve been on the move travelling and working. How are you finding life in Rochdale? I love living here. The people are really nice and it's a peaceful, quiet place. Perfect for me. What advice would you give to aspiring singers and musicians? Never give up on achieving your dream. Try to take every www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
disappointment as a lesson to keep improving. Also, play and sing because you love it and anything that comes from it is then a bonus. If you could choose any three dinner guests who would they be? And what would you cook? Tiger Woods, Kevin Costner and Elvis. I’d cook chilli because that’s all I can cook!! Where do you want to be in ten years’ time? Tricky question! In my industry it’s hard to predict I guess but in the simplest form I’d like to still be making music and be happy! QUICKFIRE QUESTIONS… Big night out or quiet night in? Quiet night in Dublin or Manchester? Dublin Morning or evening? Morning Action or comedy? Comedy Batman or superman? Batman Sweet or savoury? Savoury Phone call or text? Text Golf or football? To play: golf / to watch: football Wine or Guinness? Guinness

BRIAN BARRY-MURPHY
Rochdale AFC's new first team manager initally joined the Club as a player in 2010, and has been an integral part of the coaching staff since 2013. After being appointed first team manager in April of this year, Chairman Andrew Kilpatrick commented: "Brian is, without doubt, the right person to take Rochdale forward. He is young, hungry for success and extremely talented." The 40-year-old has created a palpable excitement amongst Dale fans, as he leads the club in a fresh, new direction. 8
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Style: Is management everything you expected? Brian: I hadn’t planned for it so I didn’t really have any expectations. It was a last minute thing but it’s humbling to be given this opportunity; it’s going really well and it’s fun every day. What are your aims for next season? Since we came together, our only aim has been to give our all in every game and give the sort of performances that excite the fans. As a group of people, we tend to get fixated on reaching targets and when we didn’t reach them over the past couple of years we were disappointed. So just to keep it really simple, our aim is to continually improve on a daily basis and have fun doing it, making it enjoyable for the players. What you find with footballers is that, within the group, the guys are insanely competitive anyway and are fixated on winning. You’ve almost got to take away that obsession and make them remember how to enjoy it and then the wins will happen naturally. You seem a really positive person, how do you ensure the players share your positive mindset? I’ve admitted to the players that over my career I’ve had to get used to losing quite a lot. It’s not a great thing to admit but if you’re humble when you lose, you value the moments of success even more. With our lads, initially we’ve been used to unbelievable success and then the last couple of years have been a struggle. One of the most rewarding things for me, in the last couple of months of the season, was that everytime we lost a game we bounced straight back and won the next. How’s team morale at the moment? The morale has been exceptional really. Obviously, the players are really ambitious and keen to test themselves, so there’s a great sense of excitement within the dressing room of what we can achieve as a group and as a club. That only comes from a very simple foundation – they’re
just trying to be the best they can be within the group, then as a team we get stronger and as a club we move forward. Even though we’ve always been viewed as the underdog, in the dressing room there’s a real ambitious group of guys who believe that they can surprise people with their tenacious and aggressive behaviour on the pitch.
What advice would you give to young, aspiring footballers? Try as many sports as you can and find the one you really love. Keep having fun and don’t be too obsessed with career goals. Some of the young footballers I’ve met have 5 or 10 year plans. I’m 40 and I don’t even have a plan! Who are your greatest role models?
Rochdale’s got one of the most productive academies for its level, how important is the academy to you? As a club, we’re immensely proud of the Academy and Youth Team. Professional contracts have been offered to four second-year scholars, (Florent Hoti, Harrison Hopper, Lewis Bradley and Fabio Tavares). These four are, in my opinion, exceptionally talented players. But at what stage of the season the supporters will see these players in a first team environment is difficult to say. From my experience, because I was in their shoes, I know it’s very important that they’re allowed to grow and develop at their own speed without any expectations or pressure on them. What you get from that situation is players that will surprise you with their rate of development.
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
David Moyes was a huge role model at the start of my career. When I came over from Ireland he was like a father figure. He was tough, he used to work us into the ground. But he taught us everything. I learnt a lot from Craig Dawson too, even though he’s 12 years behind me. The perception is that the people you learn from are always older but I’ve found you can get new ideas and energy from younger people. There’s a great range of different ages in our dressing room. Our younger players will be inspired by the older players and the older players motivated by the younger guys. There’s that chemistry between the different age brackets and it’s a great group of players. You wouldn’t believe some of the scenes we have in our changing rooms… they couldn’t be broadcast to the outside world! (continued...) 9
(...continued)
What do you get up to when you’re not coaching?
Do you have a message for the supporters for the season ahead?
I have a 7-year-old daughter so I spend as much time as I can with her. I’m lucky in that my daughter has become a big Rochdale fan too so she gets involved. She’s got an opinion on everything, she’s advising me on things already!
The relationship between the supporters and the players is a two-way thing. They probably don’t realise the influence they have on the players; it’s very noticeable at times, more so when games are really tough and the opposition are doing well. I just think we’ve gone back to what we were as a club and there has been patience on both sides. Even when results weren’t going well, there was a great understanding from the supporters that the lads were doing their best, and they’ve stuck with them through thick and thin. The players have rewarded that with excellent technical performances. The beautiful performances come from having that understanding between the supporters and players. And that bond is very important – going into next season there’s going to be spells where we lose games and we might lose a few games in a row, which is inevitable when playing such high quality league. But as long as we retain our sense of unity, I think we’ll have a very exciting season.
Has Keith Hill shared any advice? Yes, even though my role at the club has changed now, Keith advised me that it was imperative that I retained the energy and connection with the players and the supporters. I live for the club and the daily interaction with the players. We don’t earn money like they do in the Premier League so there has to be that love for the game. There’s players like Craig Dawson and Scott Hogan who have gone on to earn vast amounts of money – they were just loving every day at the club and that has led to the rewards they’ve received, and rightly so. But even now, those guys will tell you they miss huge parts of the club, so that should give the people of Rochdale a great sense of who we are really. Who would be in your dream 5-a-side team? David Flitcroft (the speed), Nicky Adams (the guile), Stephen Dawson (the power), Tom Kennedy (the sophistication) and Chris O’Grady (the chest)! 10
And I love going back to Ireland as much as I can to see family. I’ve got a lot of friends in Rochdale so I’m there a lot too.

Artisan Market boosts town centre footfall Since its launch in March of this year, Rochdale’s exciting monthly Artisan Market has proved a resounding success. The Market, which takes place on the last Saturday of the month, on The Butts, has brought fresh aromas, vivid colours, eclectic treasures and buzzing crowds to the town. The comments on social media have been overwhelmingly positive, "A lovely addition to Rochdale", "A brilliant boost for Rochdale", "Lovely stalls & great atmosphere, will definitely be back", "We loved it and we'd definitely go again", "The live music was the cherry on top". Denise Valente, Director of The Market Co, who organise the
event commented: “The launch of Rochdale Artisan Market has been a phenomenal success thanks to the amazing patronage of the local people who have come out in their thousands to support these talented local artisans.” “For us as a company we are absolutely thrilled that we have brought something that is very much appreciated by the town. To be able to provide a great platform for these local craftsmen and women and see their smiles on ’sell-outs’ is fantastic and the best bit for us is to hear how many local retail businesses have benefitted from the increased footfall, from M&S to Montague's Cafe and many more too. Thank you Rochdale!” Photos by Sam Ralph Photography

Local artist spotlight: DOODLHER Style caught up with talented local artist Victoria Whitaker, also known as ‘Doodlher’, to find out about her unique illustrations of Rochdale and her lifelong passion for drawing… Tell us a bit about yourself… when did you develop your love for drawing? Drawing has always been a part of my life. From the moment I could grasp a wax crayon between my fingers I’ve been exploring this endless source of creativity and expression. I was born and raised in rural Calderdale, and now reside here, on the other side of the Yorkshire-Lancashire border, in Rochdale.
Beyond that, it’s the history. There’s so much of it, and it shines through on every street corner. Just imagine what those buildings have seen and heard they’re like wise old trees, harbouring the memories of times past. How do you create your illustrations? Each one of my illustrations begins its life as a freehand pen and ink drawing - you will rarely see me using pencils! I then add the finishing touches and colour digitally. I have not received any formal art training, everything you see is self-taught, fuelled only by my natural ability and love for drawing. Which illustration is your favourite? Oh gosh that’s difficult. When I look at them I see more than just the final
People and Places are the primary influence to my work. I enjoy exploring the social, cultural, and historical connections that exist between the two. My natural curiosity and passion for history fuels this interest. What makes Rochdale a great source of inspiration for you? At first glance, definitely the architecture. The buildings in and around the town centre are absolutely stunning. Just think of any tourist hotspot in the UK and you begin to wonder why Rochdale doesn’t attract the same attention. I suppose it’s a bit of a treat having it all to ourselves. 14

design. I see the process behind it, the place and people I were with at the time. They’re like photos in a memory scrapbook. I’ll leave the choosing of the favourites to the viewer. Is drawing as relaxing as it seems? Nowadays I find it incredibly relaxing. There was a time, however, when I used to get quite stressed if I didn’t feel a drawing was going the way I’d originally expected. It’s only in the past few years I’ve come to realise
that it’s those unexpected turns that allow your art to develop. If you become afraid of trying new things because it seems unsafe, then you’ll never grow as an artist. We learn by making mistakes, although mistakes in art are really just happy accidents - as the famous TV artist Bob Ross used to say.
We'd love to see you hold your own exhibition, what do you think? I think anything is possible. Earlier this year I exhibited a piece at
Touchstones gallery as part of the Postcard From Rochdale display. It was pretty exciting seeing my design displayed in the same room as a Freud, Constable and Lowry, and I also managed to scoop an award at the same time. Can people purchase prints of your local illustrations? Absolutely. Each print is made to order so it’s just a case of getting in touch with me. I also do commissions, so if there’s something I haven’t doodled yet that someone would quite fancy hanging on their wall, I can create a special one-off print for them. What advice would you give to anyone looking to reignite a passion for art? Start today. If you’re holding back because you’re worried about what other people might think, remember that art is very much a journey of personal expression. Some people will like it, some people won’t, and that’s fine.

"I’d like to play Jean Valjean in Les MisÊrables at some point! That feels like the ultimate aim."
Comedian and TV Star Jason Manford comes to Manchester Palace Theatre from Tues 8th to Sat 12th October 2019 starring in a brand new UK Tour of the Tony Award winning musical CURTAINS. We caught up with Jason to chat about the show, and how he finds life in musical theatre compared to his roots in stand-up comedy... 18
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Firstly, can you tell us a little about “Curtains”? The show was a huge success on Broadway so it’s really exciting to be bringing this new production to the UK. It’s a comedy musical ‘whodunit?’ and I play a detective obsessed with musicals. When a murder happens in a theatre, he, along with the audience, turns up to discover who the killer is. It’s written by Kander and Ebb who wrote ‘Chicago’ and ‘Cabaret’, so the music is great and it’s a hilarious script. Did you know the show before coming on board? I didn’t know much, but as soon as I would mention it to friends in theatre they would say, “That’s one of my favourite shows!”. It’s a popular musical within the theatre community and I’m excited that we can share this love to cities all over the UK. You’re playing the role of Frank Cioffi, a local detective and huge musical theatre fan. What appealed to you about taking on the role? What I love about Frank is that he’s such a sweet guy, even considering he’s there to solve a murder! He loves theatre but hasn’t had the chance to be on stage, and that’s not dissimilar from how I started! I came from a different world, coming from the stand-up comedy and television world and was surrounded by these hugely talented actors and performers, so I can relate to that a bit! There’s something in him that is just fun to play with as an actor. How will you prepare for the role? Will you be swotting up on famous detectives and big musical theatre numbers? Yeah, I think so. The first thing to do is to adapt to the Boston accent. I’ve done New York a couple of times as I was Leo Bloom in ‘The Producers’ and Nathan Detroit in ‘Guys and Dolls’ so I know my way around a New York accent. However, a Boston accent is a new challenge. We get to work with an accent coach, and I’ve been
watching lots of videos and films set in Boston to get an ear for it. We’ve also got a few dance numbers, so I’ve been hitting the gym to prepare for that! Audiences may know you best from your TV and comedy work, but you’ve been part of many musicals over the years. What initially made you want to make the leap? What I really love about theatre, which I didn’t realise at first, was how much I enjoy working with other people. You spend so much time alone when you’re touring as a stand-up. I mean, don’t feel sorry for me, I did very well out of it, but it’s a lonely job! So, in theatre it’s lovely to be part of a cast, a family feel, which I really love. Do you prefer performing in theatre to stand up comedy, or do you find one or the other better suits you at different points in your life? I just find that there are times when stand-up is number one, and there are times when it’s theatre. With standup I’m starting with a blank page – I sit down and think about what I want to tell stories and jokes about whereas with musicals somebody else is setting the parameters that I then get to explore and play in. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
There’s something quite exciting about that – someone saying here are the rules, a script, story, songs, and then you’ve got to use what you’ve got to collaborate with them, with what pre-exists. It’s actually a really good discipline, and I’ve been able to use some of the skills I’ve learned in theatre and translate them to how I perform stand-up comedy. What was your very first experience of musical theatre, and when did you fall in love with it? I remember being about nine or ten at school, and I don’t know how they got away with it, but they took us to see Sweeney Todd! It was quite an experience, and I remember thinking it was just brilliant. I was in every musical I could be at high school, whether it was my year group or not I would badger the teacher until they let me be a part of it somehow. Then when I got to university they didn’t have a drama society, so I actually set the drama society up at Salford University called ‘Almost Famous’ and that’s still going now and I get invited to stuff by them all the time which is really nice! I actually also wrote a couple of musicals myself when I was at uni. (...continued) 19
(...continued) Do you think you’d ever want to write any musical theatre in the future? I’ve got a couple of things that I’m working on that I would like to develop but it’s a big world to dive into and a flop is a real flop, so it’s a big risk. It’s a lot of work but I’ve got a couple of nice ideas that I might like to explore more in the future. Do you have a role you’d love to play, regardless of age or gender? Yeah, I’d like to play Jean Valjean in Les Misérables at some point! That feels like the ultimate aim. You’ve toured before with various shows, is it something you enjoy or do you find it a bit of a challenge? Both really. I love doing it, it’s what I have always known. My family do notice that I start to climb the walls after a few months off. I’m a bit like a wild child if I’m stuck in the house for too long. I couldn’t do it forever I must say, and it’s tough being away from my family. Over the course of the year I probably spend as much time at home as any other parent does, but it’s spread out differently, and in blocks of time. The kids get it and they come and see me on tour, they’ve seen most of the shows I’ve been in. You’re a busy man, but what do you like to do with any down time you get? I don’t really have down time! Even when I’m off I like writing down ideas or music – even my hobbies are similar to my work but that’s a privilege really! I suppose my real down time is hanging out with my kids, they’re a good laugh and I love it. Have you ever been given a piece of advice, or some words of wisdom that have stuck with you? I’ve had quite a bit actually over the years! I remember Peter Kay telling 20
me when I first started stand-up that the rest of the country is working a 40-hour week at least, so just because you work in show business why should you be any different? As a comic if you wanted to you could probably get away with working for 20-minutes a night, four nights a week but he was a real inspiration to get me to say okay what am I doing with the rest of my time? He made me write a lot more and do a lot more. I also remember doing ‘Sweeney Todd’ and feeling really nervous around these incredible singers, dancers and actors and I said to Michael Ball that I feel like I’m winging it, that I’m on that TV show ‘Faking It’, and he said to me, “Darling, we’re all on Faking It” which I thought was good advice as it reassured me we are all sort of winging it to a point! www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
My Dad always used to say to me “Your horizon should become your middle distance” so that you aim for things, and when you get there you head on to the next thing. That’s a great piece of advice. Finally, what can audiences expect when they come and see ‘Curtains’? They can expect great music from the team behind ‘Cabaret’ and ‘Chicago’, a wonderful and talented cast, hilarious comedy and you’ll be questioning right the way through to the end, whodunit?! A TASTE OF SPAIN Tom McNeeney, Head Chef of The Oxford Pub, Rochdale, shares his tips for top tapas... “Some of the fondest times of my life were spent sitting with my grandad outside of some godawful bar near his house in Spain drinking cheap beer. We were huge fans of this little place because for every round you bought they’d give you something delicious “a la casa” to keep you going. So here’s a few of the dishes I remember from that naff little bar, done my way. Best enjoyed in the sunshine, shared with someone you think the world of and, preferably, though not essentially, while putting the world to rights after a few too many.”
POTATAS BRAVAS These spicy little numbers are perfect stodge for any tapas night, the two sauces make every bite different, just don’t forget plenty of crusty bread! Ingredients 1kg small potatoes, unpeeled, cooked & quartered olive oil 1 bulb of garlic 1 tin of cherry tomatoes 3 red chilies 100ml mayonnaise 1 tsp smoked paprika 1/2 lemon 22
Method First things first, whack your oven on 180ºc. Cut the top 1/4 off your garlic bulb, season the open cloves and give a little tickle of olive oil, then wrap in tinfoil and pop in the, now hot, oven. Now on a tray, place your chillies, again, a little glug of olive oil and some seasoning then place in the oven too. After 15 minutes or so take the lot out but leave the oven on. When cool enough to handle, squeeze the garlic out of it’s cloves into a saucepan, introduce the tinned cherry tomatoes and smoked paprika to the pan on a medium heat, season healthily and leave to become www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
delicious over the next twenty minutes. Throw the cooked potatoes on an oven tray, toss in a little olive oil and a few sprigs of rosemary if you’ve got any about and lob in the oven for 20 minutes. While this is all afoot, pop your chillies into a food processor and pulse a little to break them down, then add in your mayonnaise, the juice of your half a lemon, a little dash of smoked paprika and pulse a few more times to combine into a handsome, orange, terribly hot mayonnaise. Collect your potatoes from the oven and arrange attractively with the tomato sauce on top and the chilli mayo on the side for the brave ones.
CATALAN BREAD No tapas feast feels complete without bread but these thin slices of crusty sourdough with a smattering of very fresh tomato are something else. This really is one of those examples of something so simple that leaves nowhere to hide but is fantastic when it’s done right.
Ingredients 1 sourdough loaf, cut 1/2 inch thick 4 very fresh tomatoes 1 tbsp white wine vinegar 1 tbsp olive oil Method Cut your tomatoes in halves widthways and over a bowl using a box grater begin grating the open, fleshy side of the tomato, carefully. If your tomatoes are fresh when you do this they’ll reward you by coming away from the skins and stalk. Do this with all your tomatoes then season well, give a little dash of white wine vinegar
COCIDO This is less of a tapas but don’t let it put you off - shared alongside everything else this delicious, smoky, hunter’s stew makes for a delicious addition to a big shared meal. And when winter comes around this is a divine thing to come home to in a slow cooker. Ingredients 400g smoked ham or gammon, large chunks 2 smoked sausage, cut into chunks 200g black pudding, cut into 4 2 tins of chickpeas, drained & rinsed 2 tomatoes in quarters
RUSSIAN SALAD This is one of those tapas dishes that has never quite caught on over here but I don’t understand why. Cheap, full of flavour and delicious it’s one of my favourites and makes a fantastic sandwich filling if there’s any left. Use good ingredients here and the salad will thank you for it.
1 white onion diced 2 ribs of celery chopped 3 cloves of garlic chopped 200ml chicken stock 1 tbsp tomato puree 50ml red wine 1 tsp smoked paprika 1/2 tsp turmeric 2 bay leaves few good sprigs of thyme, stalks removed 2 medium potatoes, cut into 8 Method Get a good sized saucepan with a lid, pop it on a medium heat with a good slug of olive oil, once warm chuck in your onion and celery, give a little stir and let sweat down for five minutes, chuck in the garlic and do the same again. Now add your spices and wine, give a mix up then introduce the bay leaves and Ingredients 1 large potato, peeled, diced & JUST cooked in salted water 1 tomato, diced 1 small red onion, diced 1 tin of good quality tuna, drained 2 small gherkins diced 200ml mayonnaise, don’t use light, it’ll taste naff handful of frozen peas 1 lemon small bunch of flat leaf parsley Method Get your bunch of parsley and chop it finely, throwing the stalks in the bin.
PEACH & CAVA SANGRIA We got a bit giddy the other week when cava was on offer & I’ve been having to find uses for it ever since, but amongst them all, this has been a triumph. This sangria is fantastic with either
and leave to get better for half an hour. Put your grill onto a medium heat, arrange half of your bread slices on a tray and give a drizzle of olive oil and place under the grill. Once toasted, flip, then repeat with the other half of the bread. Now once out of the oven you can rub your toasted sourdough with a clove of garlic cut in half but that’s purely optional. Drain the tomatoes of most of the liquid the salt draws out of them and divide the mixture between the pieces of toast, spreading right to the edges. Simple as you like!
thyme to the party. Place your meats in, then the tomatoes, potatoes, tomato puree and chicken stock, whack a lid on, turn the heat right down and cook for half an hour. Once the potatoes have almost cooked remove the lid, add in the chickpeas and give everything a good stir. At this point the black pudding will start to fall apart a little and thicken the sauce giving it a peppery boot up the arse. Don’t season it until this point for exactly that reason, but now check the seasoning and give it a little of what it needs. Give it fifteen more minutes on a low light with no lid, till it reaches the desired consistency, something that just coats the back of a spoon. Enjoy as part of a bigger tapas meal or as proper winter bowl of comfort with some crusty bread. In a mixing bowl, combine your mayonnaise, the zest and juice of your lemon and your chopped parsley. Give this all a mix up, adding your ingredients one by one, leaving your potatoes till last so they don’t completely collapse - season as you go, but you’re wanting the lemon juice and the fresh parsley to do lots of the work here flavour wise. It’s so simple but so rewarding. Serve this with some slices of toasted baguette and spread the Russian salad precariously thick on top.

nutribullet you’ve never used) add the juice of a lemon, one tin of peaches in juice, 4 shots of white rum, 4 shots of either dry or sweet vermouth (you’ll have a bottle in the back of the booze cupboard) then blend until smooth.
Method
Pour this into your jug, top up with as much cava as there’s room for, lob in some sprigs of mint & stir. If you must, add some diced apple & a wooden spoon. Olé!

5 WAYS YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
TO OUR PLANET Climate change, global warming, or nothing to worry about?
The fact is that the Earth’s climate has changed throughout history. Most of these climate changes are attributed to tiny variations in Earth’s orbit that change the amount of solar energy our planet receives. However, a whopping 97% of scientists agree that climate-warming trends over the past century are extremely likely to be caused by human activities. The physical evidence is irrefutable. According to NASA; the planet’s average surface temperature has risen by 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit since the late 19th century, a change caused largely by increased carbon dioxide and other human-made emissions into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide emissions have also increased the acidity of surface ocean waters by 30% in the last 200 years. Examination of ice cores in Greenland and Antarctica as well as investigation of tree rings, ocean sediments, coral reefs, and layers of sedimentary rock, reveals that current warming is occurring roughly ten times faster than the average rate of iceage-recovery warming. Our oceans have absorbed much of this increased heat, with a 0.4 Fahrenheit rise in temperature. Greenland and Antarctica lost 268 billion and 127 billion tons of ice respectively, between 1993 and 2006 alone. Global sea levels rose around 8 inches in the last century, a rise which is increasing year on year. In 2018 the UN published a report stating that we have 12 years in which to work towards keeping global warming to a maximum increase of 1.5C. An increase beyond this significantly worsens the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people across the planet. Although this sounds like a very gloomy prognosis for Earth and future generations living here, we do have 12 years in which to make a difference. Here are some ways to do that... 26
1. STOP EATING MEAT The production of livestock is one of the single biggest contributors to our greenhouse gases, with animal agriculture accounting for a fifth of greenhouse gas emissions. Cutting out (or reducing) dairy is also a massive way to contribute to the climate change cause. Cows’ milk produces the most emissions (source: BBC), and uses the most water and land, in comparison to plant-based alternatives such as oat, almond or soy milk, which are just as widely available, affordable and nutritious these days. Becoming vegan or vegetarian could cut human pollution impact by up to 70% by 2050, boosting the economy in the process, because people will have less dietary-related health issues. We’ll all look and feel better too.
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
2. PUT PRESSURE ON THE BRANDS YOU LOVE AND LOATHE
Of course, ditching your car altogether – or signing up to one of the numerous car sharing schemes popping up everywhere – is an even better option.
The majority of big businesses are already making pledges to reduce their planetary impacts, promises largely driven by an acknowledgement that carbon = energy, and if you reduce your energy use, you - and they - get to save money. By choosing the brands you shop with, based on their efforts to do something about climate change, you can have a huge impact. Money talks.
3. SHOP ETHICALLY Seek out products bearing badges such as Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, Energy Star or Better Cotton, and be assured that these types of non-profits organisations are striving to protect the planet’s resources and, in turn, reduce emissions across a range of product categories. 5. VOTE FOR THE PLANET 4. BUY A MORE FUEL EFFICIENT CAR – OR DITCH IT ALTOGETHER The electric car revolution has arrived. But while green car prices continue to fall, switching to an ecofriendly car is not an option for everybody. Instead, consider the impact of your vehicle and the amount of nasty stuff it pumps into the atmosphere. Diesel cars emit up to 10x more toxic pollution than even lorries or buses, according to new data. The fact that almost 60% of Britons live in areas where diesel pollution threatens people’s health, should sound the alarm bells for us all.
One of the greatest obstacles the planet must overcome is political indifference or ignorance on the subject of global warming. Governments wield huge power to implement policies and regulations to help avert the worst impacts of a warming planet. We should research which political parties commit to reducing greenhouse gas pollution, and seek to invest in and promote ‘clean’ energy. The clean energy economy is worth $1.2 trillion globally, which speaks for itself.

Rochdale entrepreneur Philip Buckley talks to Style
STYLE CAUGHT UP WITH PHILIP BUCKLEY, OWNER OF NEW TOWN CENTRE STORE BUCKLEY MENSWEAR, AND A MAN ON A MISSION TO BRING STYLISH, QUALITY MENSWEAR TO THE HEART OF ROCHDALE... Style: You’ve been open just over six months. How has it been so far? Philip: It’s been a rollercoaster which began with the stress of trying to get open for Christmas. We opened mid November and Christmas trading was better than we could ever have hoped for, which was a massive relief, and the feedback we got off customers was very reassuring. January and February are notoriously bad for the retail sector so that was a real struggle. Since pre-easter, trade has again taken off and we are going from strength to strength. For anyone who hasn’t ventured into the store yet - what can they expect? The position of the shop in town is just perfect, situated on South Parade in one of the town’s iconic stone built buildings, in an area that will evolve over the next few years, no doubt! We have two floors of menswear with everything from suit hire to t-shirts and shorts. Downstairs is a bit more formal with a good selection of tailoring including suits, jackets and formal trousers - and on the ground floor we have a more casual offer. We are doing really well with jeans and shirts, and we definitely have a varied selection to choose from. I have years of experience in the industry and my colleague Jim Donnelly has worked at various stores including Selfridges and together we have a great knowledge of brands, product and more importantly service. Every independent survives by offering a good personal service and having a distinct product in store and I believe we offer all of this and more. What’s the best thing about owning a business in the heart of Rochdale? It’s an exciting time to be in Rochdale Town Centre, and along with most of the traders, we are so positive about the future. I’ve also found that my customers are feeling positive 30
and definitely making an effort to come back into the town. We have new bars, new cafes and they are all busy; all signs that we as a town are heading in the right direction. Events like the Artisan Market and the recent Street Eat festival are attracting people back into the town - you can see people looking at the river opening, the bridge and all the impressive architecture - and being on South Parade we are part of that. The council have been very supportive, the grants that are available to new businesses are a massive help, but they’ve also been helpful with advice on things like social media. They seem to be going in the right direction and looking to the future. This town is on the up, the signs are all good! We hear you’re very much a part of the community and local sports clubs? Being a father of four you find yourself doing things you didn’t foresee. I’m now a Level 2 rugby coach and help coach the strongest U13 team in Lancashire at Rochdale Rugby Union. My kids also play cricket at Norden Cricket Club and we try to make at least one swimming session a week with the Rochdale Triathlon club at Middleton Arena. My racing days are over but im trying to introduce my children to as much sport as possible - I’m a big believer that sport helps develop people in every positive way possible. We are also lucky enough to live on a small farm and we rear a few pigs over the summer, and then we fatten up a number of turkeys pre-Christmas. I’d like to introduce a bit of beef one day! But at the moment we are very focused on getting Buckley Menswear off the ground - the first six months have been great and the feedback we are getting and the returning customer count is fantastic. All in all, things are looking positive for both the shop and for the town. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

THE HINCH EFFECT Before we talk about what hinching is, we must refer to the woman behind it. One of the great things about Mrs Hinch (the leader of the hinch army) is that she speaks with honesty. As she and I are both expecting and experiencing the onset of nesting, I can absolutely relate to that feeling of satisfaction after a good old clean!
LEAH HAUSERMAN Health & Wellness Expert
E: lhhealthandwellness@outlook.com Instagram: lhhealthandwellness
Whilst Mrs Hinch is (accidently) famous for her tips on shining our sinks and soothing our souls, in her recent book release ‘Hinch Yourself Happy’ she refers to both her Physical and Mental Health struggles and how cleaning calms her mind and helps to manage her feelings of anxiousness and worry. She has turned what can often feel like the biggest and most timely chore of the week into a fun activity that has brought thousands of people together.

MRS HAUSERMAN’S MUST HAVES
Hinching is essentially ‘the act of cleaning’ yet there are many variations of the word. For example, I would absolutely regard myself as a ‘hincher’. I follow Mrs Hinch’s stories, use the products and ‘hinch’ my home regularly!
Housing Units Window & Glass Cleaner You’ll never clean your windows with anything else again! Oven Pride Cleaning System Great left over night for a deep oven clean. Fairy Non Bio Washing Capsules teamed with Comfort Pure Fabric Conditioner I’m a little obsessive about the smell of washing so this is the only combination I’ll use. Febreeze Unstoppables Air Freshener I find the scent booster beads a little too strong on clothing so this is a great alternative for around the house. I opt for the scent fresh. Kitchen Roll Never underestimate the power of kitchen roll. A tip I learnt years ago from good old Kim and Aggie on ‘How Clean is Your House’. Wiping over worktops, sinks and taps with kitchen roll avoids any water marks leaving everything super shiny.
MY TOP 3 MRS HINCH MUST HAVES Zoflora Works for just about anything, worktops/bins/carpets/drains/ toilets/flooring. Fresh linen is my favourite scent. Flash Bathroom Leaves the bathroom sparkling and smells divine. Minky Cleaning Pad These can be used for so many things around the home. DON’T FORGET TO CLEAN... • • • • • • 36

Mrs Hinch recommends cleaning to your favourite music; this is tried and tested and the endorphins released as you’re dusting away those cobwebs to your favourite song are incredible - not to mention the added bonus of the calories burned as you’re dancing your way around the living room with your favourite feather duster!

Rochdale’s hub of independents The unique shopping area of Cheetham Street and St Mary’s Gate, is well known to many Rochdalians. For over a century, Cheetham Street has been home to independent businesses, offering specialist products and services. To this day, the area remains a bustling hub of independents. With more new businesses moving into the area than ever before, and longstanding businesses celebrating huge milestones, the location seems to be growing in popularity, with business owners and shoppers alike. Chantilly, a specialist multi award winning lingerie and swimwear retailer, has been situated on Cheetham Street for a whopping 35 years.
Owner, Marjorie Thompson, commented: “In the last few years some wonderful independents have now joined us on the street and, looking to the future, there are exciting developments in Rochdale which will bring both new shops and more visitors to the town. With so much in the news of struggling high streets, it is absolutely fantastic that Rochdale is bucking the trend and investing in our town centre. Independent businesses have so much to offer and a wealth of knowledge and advice so please carry on supporting your local stores.” Next door to Chantilly is the popular Health Food Centre, owned by David Leeming. David commented: “Cheetham Street is an oasis of independents and businesses in specialist areas. Independents offer personal service which is a bit of an antidote to the faceless multiples. We’ve been here over 35 years in Rochdale so we must be doing 38

Keenan’s Estate Agents have just opened a new branch on Cheetham Street and popular greengrocer, Strawberry Gardens have found a prime new location on the corner of Yorkshire Street and Cheetham Street. They have been trading in the town for over thirty years, selling locally grown vegetables, fruits and spices imported from around the world.
We are also surrounded by wonderful well established independent businesses who are the grit and foundation of Rochdale, offering high quality goods and service. It’s an inspiring location."
Emma Fitton, owner of The Retreat, St Marys Gate, who recently celebrated their 26th birthday, commented: "I feel so lucky to have my salon in such a beautiful area of conservation, just a stone’s throw away from St Mary’s www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
St Mary’s Gate is also home to Ladies Only Gym, Tanfantastic, YooSlay Asian Ladies Wear Boutique, and last, but certainly not least, the multi award winning Brown’s Handcrafted Cakes who are now in their 8th successful year. As well as stunning special occasion cakes, they also offer delicious light lunches, afternoon teas and mouth watering desserts.

Beauty: Desert island essentials Summer is upon us and the age old question of the ‘must have desert island make up product‘ comes to mind! I’m not sure what my must-have would be, but I know it would have to be a multi-use make up item that I could use in several ways because I just couldn’t live without my eyes, cheeks and lips on, which got me thinking; how our make up bag essentials can be even more useful if used for more than one purpose, saving on essential suitcase space and freeing up room for you to sneak in an extra pair of your favourite heels. We all have the following essentials in our handbag but did you know their other uses? Let’s start with bronzer. Bronzing palettes are great for adding colour to warm up your complexion and leave a sunkissed glow to your skin but did you know bronzer can be used anywhere on the body? It looks lovely swept down the shins for a touch of tan on those legs or as a quick fix to deepen the colour of your legs on an unexpected sunny day. Bronzer can also be applied to eyelids as an eyeshadow which really complements a sun kissed beach look. If your bronzing palette has different shades then why not try using the lighter shades to highlight the under brow and the deeper shades in the eye crease for contour and definition? I would recommend St Tropez Bronzing palette £15. Next is the highlighter pencil which has so many uses. Applied to the brow bone it can make your eyebrows appear more defined and make your brow bone pop. Applied to the centre of the upper and lower lip gives the illusion of fuller lips. Try it over your existing lip colours to alter and lighten and transform them into completely new shades; have a play and be creative. Use on a blemish as a concealer, down the centre of the nose to contour or above the lip in the cupid’s bow to create a fuller looking top lip. You can even apply to your inner eye along the water line as an eye opener to make the whites of your eye look brighter. Did you ever think you can use a lipstick as a blusher? Apply to the apples of your cheeks and blend well using your fingertips. If you have red/orange lipstick you can use under the eyes to conceal dark circles! Less is more and blend well, try it and see! Do you have a setting powder? You can use it to set your foundation, remove excess shine or apply it over concealer so that it doesn’t crack when you sweat. It goes on sheer so you can keep using it throughout the day without the worry of it looking too cakey or heavy. Due to it being sheer, you can use it throughout the seasons no matter what your natural skin shade. Its multi use is an interesting one, it can be applied over a lipstick to mattify or can be used under eyes as protection when applying a smokey or heavier made up eye. We all need an SPF to protect our skin and in the summer months especially. To save space for your holiday essentials why not use a CC Cream with a Factor 50 SPF (I would recommend Payot CC Cream £27). This can then be used as a tinted moisturiser with a light coverage and at the same time protect you from the sun and its harmful rays. Emma Fitton / The Retreat

THAT CARLTON MAGIC – PARTS ONE & TWO The very name, the Carlton, will immediately conjure up happy memories for many Style readers. Situated on Great George Street off Drake Street, the Carlton‘s heyday was many years ago. But, on its 50th anniversary, in 1984, the Rochdale Observer had a column called Memory Waltz where week after week readers wrote in with special memories of this ballroom’s role in their lives. It was quite clear that many people had met their future partners at the Carlton. At least one couple even had their wedding reception at the Carlton! The Carlton Ballroom opened in 1934 and was an instant success; the building was a former wool scouring mill. The new ballroom was described in the County Borough Directory as a “Super Ballroom, Cafe and Restaurant... reputed to be definitely superior to any dance hall in the North of England” with a cushioned floor, “entirely of Canadian maple”. There was room for over “400 couples without crowding” and room for between 250 and 300 people sitting on the balcony, later known as "The Rack". Even in wartime, a 1941 newspaper advertisement promises Freddie Platt and a 12 piece orchestra,
along with the La Fleur Ballroom Organ! There was dancing six evenings during the week and afternoon sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Weekday afternoon sessions cost 6d admission, while the most expensive ticket was Saturday night at 1/6 (that is just under 8p!). Members of His Majesty’s Forces “in uniform”, we are told, “will be admitted at reduced charges every evening”. Clearly, like the many cinemas in Rochdale, the Carlton was welcome respite from a world of rationing and blackouts. During one air raid warning, the Freddie Platt Band played on until the all clear! Bands that played there also included Ernie Mills and Les Moss. These were big bands, playing music for dancing. Picture in your mind the versatile resident band on BBC1’s “Strictly Come Dancing” and you will have some idea of the setup. These bands quickly and expertly learned and then performed their own versions of the hits of the day. The 1950’s brought rock ‘n’ roll and a new generation of Carlton dancers. Much of this music was played on actual records, so we were seeing the birth of what later became known as a disco. In February 1957, there was serious debate in council meetings over the question of schoolchildren attending lunchtime rock ‘n’ roll sessions at the Carlton. It was reported that on one Tuesday 262 pupils from twelve schools visited the ballroom with the nearby Boys & Girls Technical Schools “providing the largest numbers”! This led to the directors deciding not to admit schoolchildren to future lunchtime sessions, bringing in an age bar. In November 1956 the Carlton was purchased by the Mecca organisation. Between 1956 and 1959 there was an eight strong Black Panthers dance troupe which consisted of 17- 20 year olds. The troupe’s personal trainer was former boxer Johnny Butterworth and Ernie Mills, the manager of the Carlton, supplied shirts with logos. In December 1957, there was a gala night to celebrate the completion of the ballroom’s alterations which included a revolving stage and two new bars. Mayor Alderman Thomas Rose described the improved Carlton as “stupendous, Colossal and magnificent”! The Carlton continued, providing a dancing venue for different styles and ages.

Suddenly – and shockingly – the Carlton became a bingo hall in 1966. Understandably, there were many irate letters in the local newspaper. Angry parents complained that their teenage children were being deprived of a local dancing venue and would have to travel to other towns. One letter from a bingo player stated that lack of support was the reason why dancing nights were ended. The Carlton’s manager was quoted to say that Friday night dancing was dropped because it was “not popular”. A DJ at the Carlton in the 1960’s summed up many people’s feelings: “When it closed down, Rochdale lost something that nobody has been able to replace and even though many night clubs have since opened in Rochdale, they have never achieved that Carlton magic." It appears that bingo continued at the Great George Street venue for the next two decades. (Bingo hall history is notoriously unrecorded.) The bingo hall closed in 1989 after a fire. Six years passed with seemingly no activity in the building.
But good news was on the horizon as the Rochdale Observer in 1995 announced “Dancing is making a comeback at the Carlton Ballroom, more than 60 years after it opened.” There was opposition at the time from Northern Leisure who ran Xanadus and Pazazz in Rochdale who said that the Carlton would end up as a disco “within a month or two”. Refurbished by Mike Fay and Ged Clark, the New Carlton Ballroom reopened on September 2nd 1995 with reports that the end of the queue stretched back from the entrance, along Great George Street right up to Champness Hall on Drake Street.
The 18 piece Glenn Miller Orchestra were the star attraction who flew in from Copenhagen. The reopened venue could now hold 1900 people and a mix
of ballroom and line dancing, dancing lessons and cabaret was promised. For the next four years there was a steady stream of 1960’s pop acts such as The Manfreds and The Merseybeats, as well as 1970’s disco stars Boney M and The Real Thing. The majority of performances were, however, tribute acts including our own Tony Grant’s Rhapsody, along with Back Out Of Hell (Meat Loaf); Voulez Vous (Abba) and many, many more! Line dancing was enjoying a surge of popularity and dancing classes were held on Mondays and Tuesdays. At the beginning, afternoon tea dances were held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for just £1.95 admission. There was an occasional appearance by a swing band and a short phase of Chippendalestyle “male revue” acts. The advertisements in the Rochdale Observer suggest a thriving night spot. In the summer of 1999 the regular Carlton advertisements in the Rochdale Observer abruptly stopped. The ballroom closed on September 11th for a refit. In November the opening of Liquid Rock in the same building was announced. This night spot continued until its closure in 2006. The building was demolished soon after and various plans were discussed. However, nowadays the site is now a car park. Surely the Carlton deserved a better fate than that? Anyone in favour for a blue plaque? Richard Lysons Thanks, as always, to Local Studies staff.

Never leave animals in hot cars, conservatories, outbuildings or caravans, even if it’s just for a short while. Temperatures can quickly rise to 47°C which can result in death. Use pet safe sun cream on exposed parts of your pet’s skin, such as the tips of their ears. Ensure pets always have access to shade and fresh drinking water to help keep them cool. Provide relief from the heat with damp towels for your pet to lie on. Dogs may also appreciate a paddling pool to splash around in. 48
RABBIT AWARENESS WEEK For Rabbit Awareness Week we recently held a FREE microchip (for rabbits), claw clip and health check event for rabbits and guinea pigs at the Animal Centre, which was very successful. 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ROCHDALE ANIMAL CENTRE The Rochdale Branch of the RSPCA was established in 1890 and initially based on Molesworth St. However a new clinic and animal shelter became operational on High St/Redcross St on 2 October 1939 and was officially opened by the Mayor on 6 December 1939. 2019 marks the 80th Anniversary of the Rochdale Animal Centre and we will be celebrating the event. Details will be available soon.

SUMMER OF SPORTS
As I type this, the skies are blue, the sun is warm and deep down we are hoping we are on the verge of a glorious summer just like last year. The summer of 2018 is etched in the memory for the long spell of hot weather and the England football team giving us all hope of sporting glory at long last. Well we hope 2019 will lead our nation to sporting glory in other endeavours and for those who fancy something sporty on the road here are my favourite picks for a summer of sporting fun.
PORSCHE CAYMAN At the launch of the original incarnation of the Cayman, many ridiculed it for being a poor man’s 911. But over time many, including myself, grew to love it for just what it was, an entry level Porsche that gave all the thrills and spills of its bigger brother at a fraction of the price. The latest model Cayman has now been with us for a few years but it is still looking fresh and vibrant and most importantly, still thrills out on the road.
Inside, the cabin isn’t as cramped as you may imagine, and because the Cayman is essentially a hatchback, it has relatively good all round visibility, I would even dare to say it is pretty easy to parallel park.
open the windows and floor the engine, you’ll be amazed by both the noise and the power.
While the handling is sweeter than a honey-coated boiled sweet when the roads are sweeping and swooping, it can get a little irksome around the city. This is more than made up for by the graceful manoeuvrability which puts many superminis to shame.
If you look back through the family tree of the Jaguar F-Type coupé, to its grandad the XK and its ancestor the XJ-S, it is made up of cars that on launch weren’t considered to be beautiful, but like the ugly ducking, blossomed with age. When the XJS was launched back in 1976, it was considered to be an insult to the E-Type that went before it. Yet when production ceased in 1996, it had become one of the nation’s favourite cars, equally few liked the XK on launch but it blossomed and is on the verge now of classic status.
I had the pleasure of trying a Cayman S which came with a freerevving turbo-charged 2.0 litre engine, good for nearly 300bhp. At low revs the engine sounds restrained, even polite, but if you keep the faith, push up the revs, 50

JAGUAR F-TYPE COUPÉ
The F-Type however takes its cue from its eponymous predecessor, the E-Type, in being stunningly gorgeous from its inception. I’ve been doing this a while now and there are few modern cars that really make me stand and stare, the F-Type coupé is one of the few.
The car I had a go in had the “base” 2-0-litre turbo charged engine which gives out the same near 300bhp as the afore-mentioned Cayman. In the Jaguar however there seems to be a deeper growl and a bit more low end grunt that in the real world seems to get you away from the line that minute bit quicker.
it has clear design overtures to the previous generation Supra which was last sold 21 years ago. Borrowing an engine from BMW, the Supra has two more cylinders than the other two cars here being a 335bhp, 3.0-litre straight-six. It’s not just the engine either that is sourced from BMW. The chassis, gearbox and quite a bit of the interior is also shared with the latest Z4. On a completely unscientific level, I would say that out and about the Supra definitely got more second glances than either the Jag or the Porsche but that could well be the novelty factor of the new car, coupled with the more radical styling. The ride in the Supra is also the firmest of the three here, being a much more sports-orientated set up than the other two. That
said, I would say in my opinion it delivers the most fun. The steering has excellent feedback and the mechanic grip delivers a confident ride. So what would I buy with my own money? I’m afraid it’s a split decision. For a weekend sports car to go out and have some fun I’d take the Supra, for a trip to the South of France and back I’d take the F-Type but to live with every day, it would have to be the Cayman. Mark D’Apice
TOYOTA SUPRA Being of the generation that grew up on a diet of Fast and Furious films, I can’t deny being just a little bit over excited when Toyota announced that they were building a follow up to the doyenne of the afore-mentioned franchise, the Supra. Whilst the looks of the new model are a little less subtle than either the F-Type or the Cayman, www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

ROCHDALE’S MAN OF CONVICTION John Bright was born in 1811 at Greenbank, Cronkeyshaw and is one of Rochdale’s more famous figures. Bright rose to become one of the world’s most famous politicians and his advice was even sought by US President Abraham Lincoln, who was his friend, confidante and admirer. He was the eldest son from a family of eleven children; his father, Jacob, was a Quaker cotton mill owner where John worked as a youth during a time when he began a reputation for public speaking as a member of the Rochdale Juvenile Temperance Movement, using a chair for a podium, something he repeated later in life when addressing crowds. He readily involved himself in educational, social and political groups within his home town and remained committed to worthy causes throughout his life, founding the Rochdale Literary and Philosophical Society for debating the issues of the day. He strongly opposed the imposition of compulsory Church Rates and in 1840, supported by Todmorden Quakers, a fierce debate in St Chad’s churchyard ensued with John speaking from the top of a tombstone. Church men were jostled, a wall collapsed and soldiers with bayonets stood by. The rate was abolished shortly after.
Bright opposed slavery and in 1852 he opposed the Crimean War losing him some support for being unpatriotic. Later in the 1880’s he opposed Gladstone’s Home Rule Bill for Ireland which split the Liberal Party and caused his relationship with Gladstone to break down. John was always a huge supporter of universal education and for Parliamentary reform, doing much to help the working person and often received opposition from the aspirational and conservative middle class. He was always recognised by his peers for his brilliant speaking skills and strong principles. He laid the foundation stone for Rochdale Town Hall where he is commemorated inside. In 1888, Bright became seriously ill and died at his home in March 1889 and buried in the graveyard of the Religious Society of Friends in Rochdale where he had attended school as a boy. A statue was erected in 1891 in his honour which still stands in Broadfield Park.
Bright was elected as a Liberal M.P. in 1843. Richard Cobden, with whom John is strongly associated, had entered in 1841 standing for Stockport. Their alliance resulted in the formation of the Anti - Corn Law League aiming to repeal the high duty on imported cereal which kept the price of food high. Both were northern mill owners and they encountered prejudice from the landed classes within Parliament. Always introduced as “John Bright from Rochdale” his reputation drew huge crowds. Manchester’s Free Trade Hall was erected for the League to hold their highly supported meetings with the laws eventually repealed in 1846. John married Elizabeth Priestman in 1839 and they had a daughter though his wife died two years later. He married second wife, Margaret Leehan, in 1847 and they produced seven children together. In that same year he was elected as a Manchester M.P. and continued to debate strongly for free trade and electoral reform though, surprisingly, he opposed mill owner and former ally, John Fielden’s proposals to reduce people’s working hours. 52

TEAM TOM!
The one thing Springhill Hospice fundraisers have in common is the desire to give something back. In the case of Chantelle Thornton, and her family and friends, they not only wanted to say ‘thank you’ but also wanted to help ensure that Springhill’s doctors and nurses could continue their care for others. Last year, the hospice cared for Chantelle’s husband, Tom Thornton, who tragically lost his life to cancer just weeks after the birth of their son Maxwell. One year on and Chantelle, along with ‘Team Tom’, have pledged their support to
Springhill Hospice. Team Tom, a group made up of over 30 supporters, chose to run Manchester’s 10k, raising both money and awareness for the Hospice, wearing specially made t-shirts bearing the smiling face of Rochdale Rugby Union player, Tom. Speaking about their fundraising efforts Chantelle said, “Team Tom has collectively raised £3,431 so far and our total is still rising. It is really important to us all to know that someone else will receive the same extra special care that Tom was able to receive.”

to use all year round, a specially designed medal, a bottle of water, disposable rain mac (if needed!), a banana and a sponsor form. Last year this event raised a staggering £18,500 for Springhill Hospice and it is hoped this year’s will raise even more!

community news OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF LADY KATHERINE, THE NEW ‘LADY OF THE LAKE’
A very special ‘lady’ was the toast of Hollingworth Lake marking the return of a much-loved tradition which has brought joy to many thousands, dating back over 150 years. Lady Katherine, Hollingworth Lake Adventure and Water Activity Centre’s new ‘Lady of the Lake’ passenger boat, has been officially launched, hailing a new era of pleasure boat cruises around Rochdale’s green gem of a beauty spot. Roger Platt, Chair of the Link4Life Board of Trustees and Councillor Janet Emsley, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Community and Culture officially launched Lady Katherine, a serene and beautiful addition to the Lake.
Hollingworth Lake – originally built to supply water to the Rochdale Canal - first became a popular tourist destination in the mid-1800s and rapidly became known as the ‘Pennine Blackpool’. The pleasure boat tradition began in 1856 with the arrival of two paddle steamers – one named ‘Neptune’. It’s thought Lady Alice glided onto Hollingworth Lake in 1927 alongside a ‘floatilla’ of pleasure boats; The Pennine Queen, The Hilda and later, Clara. Lady Alice took up her place in regal history when she ferried the Queen’s Jubilee Baton bearer across the Lake, ahead of the opening ceremony of the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Admittedly Lady Katherine has a big hull to fill in following Lady Alice’s watery footsteps but we’re sure she’ll secure as much affection from lake lovers for as many generations to come. She will be on the Lake carrying passengers from April to October. Adult tickets are priced at £5 each, under 16’s £3.
Of course, we can’t forget her adored predecessor, Lady Alice, who was built in 1923 and majestically cruised the Lake securing a place in the hearts of thousands of visitors.
Claire Costigan, General Manager of Hollingworth Lake Activity Centre & Country Park, said “It’s wonderful to bring back the boat trips around the lake, giving families the opportunities to share old memories and make new ones. Lady Katherine will give families the chance to experience the lake and nature from a new perspective…a duck’s eye view”.
Sadly Lady Alice was forced into retirement due to her age around 10 years ago but she is still fondly and affectionately remembered by so many. The new, much anticipated Lady of the Lake arrived last June but the hot sunny weather and lack of rain meant water levels were too low for her to carry passengers. Lady Katherine was purchased by Link4Life, a charity which works in the heart of the Rochdale Borough community, inspiring people to live more active, creative and healthy lifestyles. Link4Life ploughs its surplus finances into facilities and activities to benefit the whole of Rochdale and Lady Katherine is a fine example of this.
GREEN-FINGERED LOCALS CREATE COMMUNITY ALLOTMENTS The new Toad Lane Allotments are associated with the Incredible Edible network whose vision is to create ‘kind, confident and connected communities through the power of food’. The Pioneer Pantry, held at Rochdale Pioneers Museum is a member owned scheme that runs every Friday 12-3pm. It provides food at affordable prices at £2.50 for ten items. Once a year, members vote on how any profits are spent and in the last vote, the members decided to use the money to grow vegetables and herbs which they will plant, care for and eventually reap the benefits of. With thanks to Rochdale Council providing the planters on Toad Lane, the support of Incredible Edible North West, Petrus PIER garden and social media followers of the museum, they have been able to start growing vegetables such as radishes, peas and lettuces as well as herbs such as mint, coriander and basil and more! The next monthly meeting will be 15th July. The gardening brings together all who wish to help out and those who use the service, connecting and caring for communities; as Incredible Edible put it, 'if you eat, you're in!'. Anyone can join the Incredible Edible Toad Lane Allotments, get in touch with Cat Jessop at Rochdale Pioneers Museum at cat@co-op.ac.uk or 01706 524 920. 62

FASHION SHOW RAISES HUNDREDS OF POUNDS FOR NSPCC A charity fashion show at Moo Boutique, in Milnrow has raised over £300 for the NSPCC in Littleborough. The fashion event was held at the ladies’ fashion boutique on Dale Street on 23rd May. On arrival, everybody received a glass of prosecco and a delicious cupcake from Mrs Barber’s bakery before browsing the store and enjoying a chat about the latest trends. Pop-up stalls featured The Body Shop and Park Lane jewellery. Owner Nicola Brown donated 10% of that night’s proceeds to the children’s charity, plus funds from a raffle which featured generous prizes from local businesses. Nicola is also celebrating a successful first year in business, after fulfilling her lifelong dream of opening her own boutique. Find out more on page 25.
Jimmy thought the studio was ‘fantastic’ and even had a fitting joke for the occasion: “So I went to see my psychiatrist and said can you help me I think I’m a dog... the psychiatrist said get on the couch, I said no I’m not allowed on the couch”. Owner of PoochPix, Jackie Meredith commented: “We’re so excited about the new studio and can’t wait to welcome local dog owners and their lovely pooches! Dogs bring so much joy to their owners’ lives, we thought it was about time they took centre stage. The studio has been designed for dogs in mind, with lots of space to run around and yummy treats. ROCHDALE TAKES A STEP BACK IN TIME Heritage Open Days and Rochdale BID staged a special celebration event, The Time Machine, in Rochdale’s historic Toad Lane as part of the national 25th Anniversary celebration of Heritage Open Days. Over the weekend of 1 and 2 June, visitors were invited to share stories of the town’s past, present and future with a range of fun, interactive activities for young and old. Mayor Billy Sheerin visited the pop-up picture house on board Audrey, The Vintage Mobile Cinema which presented news clips of milestone moments and memories of Rochdale. There was an aroma archive of powerful smells and flashback fragrances which included the stench of the River Roch, cattle market and the famous lavender cart. Time Travellers from Touchstones brought a collection of artefacts in a Cabinet of Curiosities and the Pioneers Museum staged a Household History Detective area of consumer items. Time Machine themed walkabout theatre companies entertained shoppers in The Exchange and there were free guided walks across the town centre with Colin Meredith. A Futurescope area generated conversations and gathered feedback on the multi-million pound transformation of Rochdale Town Hall, with visitors sharing their hopes and dreams for the building.
YOUNG ROCHDALE MAGICIAN IMPRESSES BGT JUDGES Young Rochdale magician, Dan Rhodes, may have missed out on the live shows, but he certainly made an impression on the Britain’s Got Talent judges and viewers this year. The charismatic 15-year-old impressed the judges with his homemade cardboard box magic trick. Dan enlisted the help of BGT judge Amanda, whom he politely asked to get into the box, so you could only see her legs and head. He then proceeded to 'saw' the TV star in half before magically putting Amanda's body back together again - with the help of a few staples. Simon Cowell said: "I feel a bit of showmanship about you, Dan. You're very confident. It did surprise me at the end so well done." Speaking to Style about his experience on the show, Dan commented: “I loved being able to show my magic to the judges and the audience, it was a great day filming!” On whether he would consider auditioning again, Dan answered: “I’ve no plans to return, but I really liked the act ‘X’.” Act ‘X’ was the contestant who kept his identity hidden until the final, where he then revealed himself to be former semi-finalist Marc Spelmann. Could Dan’s cryptic answer mean he'll return to BGT next year, in disguise? We hope so! Dan currently has over 31,000 followers on Instagram (@danrhodesmagic) where he regularly posts videos of his magic tricks. 64
