Ashworth Road, Norden by Terry Angus

Richard Lysons and Paul Brady delve into local music history, while Trevor Hoyle reminisces about Dale's unforgettable trip to Old Trafford. 2020 looks as though it will be an exciting year for Rochdale, with the new Riverside development due for completion and a huge calendar of events... including a visit from Dippy the diplodocus! See Steve Cooke's All Across The Arts events guide on pages 14-15. In Steve wise word's "Never let it be said that 'it's boring around here, there's nothing going on!'". She may have been 'All Around The World' but our very own pop star knows there's no place quite like home. Despite her many years spent living in Ireland and the States, Lisa has retained the most brilliant Rochdale accent - and the chatty, down-to-earth, straighttalking personality to match. In the late '80s and throughout the '90s, the smiley singer was the coolest pop star on the planet. Her soulful vocals and timeless dance-pop songs saw her top the charts on both sides of Atlantic, duet with George Michael and Queen, win multiple Brits and Ivor Novello awards and feature on The Bodyguard, the biggest-selling film soundtrack of all time. Four albums were international hits, selling more than 15 million copies and spawning over 20 hit singles, yet Lisa was never interested in fame. She made only the music she wanted to make, didn’t try to keep up with trends and took her career at her own pace, even turning to acting at one stage, with appearances in The Edge of Love, Miss Marple and Goldplated.

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

To mark the 30th anniversary of her debut album 'Affection', Lisa and her prodigious band have recently finished a UK tour, performing the hits, alongside favourites from Lisa’s seven subsequent solo records, including her latest album 'Deeper'. Style's Editor, Ruth Parkinson, caught up with Lisa to chat about her incredible career, life in Rochdale and why she isn't Simon Cowell's biggest fan...!

Do you still live around here? Yeah, still up near Norden. I live between Rochdale and London now. What’s the best thing about living in Rochdale? Oh it’s the people in Rochdale. And I really love that you’re in a town but you’re so close to the countryside, it’s beautiful. I love that you’ve kept the Rochdale accent… Yeah, I think it’s because me and Ian [Devaney] have always been together, so we’ve never lost our accents. Imagine if I was married to an American, I wonder what I’d sound like! Which places in Rochdale hold the best memories for you? I suppose Oulder Hill and Redbrook School. I thought Redbrook was the best school in the whole wide world. I never wanted to leave - oh I thought it was absolutely gorgeous. It’s where I made one of my best friends ever in my life. Then we went to Oulder Hill, so it was beautiful for me, because I loved singing and to have that theatre there [Gracie Fields Theatre] in just a normal community school was such a privilege for the kids. We did lots of school productions; it was unbelievable. And that’s where I met my husband, Ian - that theatre is where I first laid eyes on him! You and Ian have the perfect love story… Haha it’s a bit corny really isn’t it! Aw I just love him. When did you first discover your voice? I was about four years old! My mum was playing records and singing along so I sang along. I mean, I was four, so it probably sounded absolutely ridiculous, but it felt lovely. As a kid it felt really naughty, like everyone was going to tell me off! But I think that’s because it felt so good to do it… I know it’s not naughty anymore!!

Who influenced your style of singing? A lot of Motown, Philadelphia - I could go on and on, but a lot of old soul music really. When I’m writing and I’m at a loose end, I’ll stick Marvin Gaye on and it just gets my creative juices flowing. You’ve just finished your tour celebrating 30 years since the release of your debut album ‘Affection’, in 1989, which sold over 5 million copies...! I feel enormously proud of ‘Affection’. I said it then and I’ll say it now. To have a part of yourself floating around out there for everyone to enjoy and knowing so many people still do enjoy it is a huge compliment.

What are your plans for 2020? Writing and recording mainly. I don’t think there will be any tour dates. How about a Rochdale gig? We’ve often talked about the Feel Good Festival but we’ve always been very busy and never been able to organise it but you never know. Imagine how excited everyone would be if you did… Oh, they might throw cabbages at me, you never know! (continued...)

Is ‘Affection’ your favourite album or does your latest album ‘Deeper’ top it? Well I think your last album is always your favourite album as it’s the freshest in your mind. But now I’m just onto the next one. All that’s gone now and I’m starting again. I love it, that’s the whole process of it. What’s gone to me is new to you really. Do you have a title for your next album? No, we don’t even know what format it’s going to be. It’s going to be very souly I think, but I don’t even know if it’s going to be an album, an EP or tracks here and there. It’s lovely though because there aren’t any rules.

(...continued)

Do you have an all-time favourite track of your own? Not really because there are so many different songs that mean different things to me. They’re like little stories in a way. It’s like liking one child more than the other isn’t it – it’s not fair! Is there a stand-out moment of your career that makes you look back and think ‘wow did that really happen'? The Freddie Mercury tribute was unbelievable but I think Rock In Rio was a little bit more special, personally, because people were watching me and it wasn’t me doing someone else’s songs. And it was like 100,000 people. I wasn’t topping the bill - I was supporting George Michael. But it was just really, really incredible. I suppose it depends on the individual but when you stand infront of an audience that big, I think something happens to your body chemically, where you go into a state of complete calm. I think your body just goes ‘ok I can’t handle this’ so I’m just going to wipe it out and it’s fine. So it’s just sort of like being at home singing but with a blanket of 100,000 people. It’s just a really gorgeous feeling. Your career kicked off after the ‘Search for a Star’ talent contest in Manchester – was that like today’s ‘X Factor’? No everyone thinks it was like a massive thing. It was just a little talent contest in Eccles, in a little nightclub, called The Talk of the North. The main reason I became successful after that was that one of the judges was the Light Entertainment Producer at Granada television, Johnnie Hamp; and he was the man who put the Beatles on the television the first time. He thought I was the bee’s knees so he put me on Granada and then I just did other things from that, then formed Blue Zone. What do you think of television talent shows like The X Factor, or this year’s Celebrity X Factor? Well… I just so hope it’s all coming to an end because Simon Cowell’s face can’t last much longer!! I think it’s quite awful really, that show. 6

The judges just massage each other’s ego’s - I think it’s very self indulgent television on prime time telly. It’s nothing to do with the acts and everything to do with the judges. I think it’s really coming to the end when you’ve got celebrities on there. Are we going to have pets doing it next? It’s unbelievable what s*** you can get out of the bottom of a barrel! It’s cheap television that makes an incredible amount of money for everyone involved, apart from the people who are actually going on it because they want to be successful. If you could choose anyone - past or present - to duet with who would it be? Marvin Gaye. But I’d just poo my pants so bad, I’d be so frightened! I imagine he’d put you at your ease though. But it was beautiful to sing with Barry White, he made me feel so comfortable. If you could make one wish this Christmas what would it be? I don’t know really. I don’t wish for very much. I’m quite happy with my lot. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Finally, a few questions to check you’re still a Rochdale girl… What does cruckle mean? When you go over on your ankle! God I love that word, I’m going to put it in a song! I love putting funny words in songs. If someone is ‘pecking your head’ what are they doing? I’d say they were getting on your nerves! What’s a ginnel? Oh a ginnel is like, a little alleyway between houses! Is it a bap, barm, teacake, bun, roll, or a muffin? Oh it’s a muffin. And an oven bottom muffin at that!

SUE DEVANEY

10

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Style caught up with Sue to discuss life on tour, stepping back onto the cobbles, and why she's decided to raise awareness of the UK's homelessness epidemic...

Are you enjoying Calendar Girls? Calendar Girls means so much to me. Every night before I go on stage, I say this is for you mum. My brother had leukaemia and I lost my mum and dad to cancer; and Calendar Girls is the true story of a group of middleaged Yorkshire women who produced a nude calendar to raise money for Leukaemia Research - they’ve made over £20 million over the years for Bloodwise. So that’s why I’m doing it. It’s rare that you can work with a group of women of similar age, and all have wonderful parts in a show like this. The music is fantastic. What’s touring like? Doing the show is easy, the travelling and finding digs is tiring though, I think people think we’re in five star hotels! The biggest thing for me is missing my family. You’re kind of married to the job. But it is great fun and I get to see a lot of places I wouldn’t usually see… like Southend and Wolverhampton!! When I toured with Mamma Mia we went to lots of interesting places though, like Korea, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Have you met Calendar Girl's composer, Gary Barlow? Oh yes I think Gary’s lovely! Very charming. Very good looking!

on 6th Dec and 2pm/7.30pm on 7th Dec (tickets available from Touchstones or link4life.org). It’s a Q&A with songs and laughs! I’ve nothing in my diary for 2020. Absolutely nothing. It’s really exciting. I always think when you’ve got nothing there’s always hope something will be around the corner. How did it feel to be back on the cobbles recently? I loved every minute of it. Having scenes with all me old muckers!

Image: ITV Pictures

Which scene was your favourite? I was really nervous about doing the Rovers scenes but I loved them. I thought it was really well written and I loved all the episodes. Is there a chance we might see more of Debbie Webster in the future? Oh my gosh, that would be amazing. Who knows, Debbie might come back, it just depends what stories they have in mind. What are your career highlights? Working with Victoria Wood. Playing Mari Hoff at Bolton Octagon in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice and obviously, doing Rochdale pantos with Colin Meredith.

Which three things can’t you live without on tour? My hot water bottle – even in the summer! My steamer for my voice. Oh and my vitamins… my 25 million vitamins. What are your plans for after the tour? I’m doing ‘Sit Soft with Sue Devaney’ at Touchstones in Rochdale, 7.30pm

Who are your role models? Kathy Burke, Prunella Scales, Lesley Joseph for her comedy. Doris Day because I wanted to be her! What would be your dream role? I’ve always wanted to play Puck in Midsummer Night’s Dream but I’m getting a bit old for that! My friend Patricia Hayes did a film called ‘Edna, The Inebriate Woman’ which was www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

about a homeless vagrant who was an alcoholic. I’d love to do a remake of that, but in modern times, where homelessness is so prevalent now and so is addiction. Homelessness seems to be an issue that’s really important to you. While touring, you’ve been talking to homeless people about their lives and posting their stories on your Instagram (@suedevaney13). How do you get people to talk so openly? Yes I’m planning to end it by talking to homeless people in Rochdale. I just go with an open mind. I sit down and we start chatting; I tell them what I’m doing and my story, as well as asking about theirs. I tell them about my struggles with anxiety and depression and where I am now. And I have to say, 90% of people that I sit down with can’t wait to tell me their story - they can’t wait for someone to chat to. It’s like they’re invisible. These people that are on the streets have a back story – they didn’t start off as addicts or homeless. Any of us could end up homeless. I think we need to put people before money and power. Nobody should be living on the streets or starving in this day and age. What has kept you in Rochdale instead of moving to London or elsewhere? It doesn’t matter where I go in the world, I’ll always love nipping into town and just seeing one of my mates from school. My life is quite transient and I meet people for a period of time while I’m on a job. It gives me a sense of belonging coming home to Lancashire, and the roughness of them Pennines! I’ve been all over the world but there’s nowt nicer than lighting your fire, closing your door and peggin' out! What do you want for Christmas? More than anything, I want to just ‘be’, and stop chasing my tail. I want to be stable, in a world that is unpredictable at the minute. Or a new dishwasher!

One of our most successful and iconic centres of creativity, The Curtain Theatre, was first established in 1925 by a group of local enthusiasts looking to ensure that culture played an important role improving the lives of working people. They took the name for their amateur theatre from Elizabethan London’s Curtyn Theatre which predated the Globe as a venue for Shakespeare’s plays. The 2020 programme of five plays will include Smokey Joe's Café in April and The Rise and Fall of Little Voice in June.

The Rochdale Music Society has been promoting great music played by great musicians for the last forty years in venues across the borough. In recent years the venue has been the Civic Centre in Heywood which provides a welcoming, comfortable and acoustically generous setting for both audience and performers alike. Coming up on Saturdays at 7:30pm in February, Luka Okros concert pianist, March Pelleas Ensemble (flute, viola & harp), April Patrick Hemmerle concert pianist, and May Raphaela Papadakis soprano.

Middleton arena will be a venue worth keeping an eye on with live National Theatre broadcasts and, in February Frankenstein, June, Ed Byrne. As part of a nationwide tour, Frankenstein is a new theatrical adaptation of Mary Shelley’s seminal 1818 gothic horror novel.

Jonathan Higgins, Head of Events & Programming at Link4Life says, "This will be the first time (other than panto!) that Middleton Arena has hosted a week-long run and is part of a wider strategy, working with a variety of partners, across a number of venues and events, to broaden the cultural programme across the Rochdale Borough". Comedian Ed Byrne says that, in his new show, If I’m Honest, he will be taking a long hard look at himself and trying to decide if he has ANY traits that are worth passing on to his children.

ORTOA (Oldham, Rochdale & Tameside Organists' Association) will be offering virtuoso recitals on Rochdale Town Hall Organ certain Saturdays at noon: January - Alexander Binns (Derby Cathedral) & Dora Chatzigeorgiou on violin, March - Marc Murray (Director of Music, Bury Parish Church) and May - Ben Morris (York Minster). Toad Lane Concerts, Rochdale's weekly music at lunchtime at St Mary's in the Baum will continue to have performances every Wednesday 12:30 to 1:30 pm. Rochdale Parish Church will host periodically on Saturdays at 12 noon and Littleborough Coach House on occasional Tuesdays. At Rochdale Parish Church amongst the performers from Manchester University and the RNCM who will be performing are Rhiannon Ashley (Soprano), Emyr Jones (Baritone), Savva Zverev (Violin), Phillip Sharp (Piano). Then in Summer (date tbc), by popular demand, there will be a Saturday afternoon piano concert by Scott Brothers Duo (Jonathan and Tom Scott). This year the Music for Youth Regional Festivals will take place between February and April in almost 50 locations nationwide. The Rochdale Regional Festival being 7 March, at Rochdale Town Hall 9am - 5pm. The Regional Festival Series is free to

take part in and open to any type of group, style of music, and standard of playing. The Regional Festivals are a fantastic chance for young musicians to perform and share their music, listen to performances from other groups, meet other musicians and gain expert advice from professional musicians and music educators. If you attend a Regional Festival or submit a recording as part of the Regional Festival Series, you will be invited to attend the 2020 National Festival – look out for more information soon. New to our borough for 2020 will be the Rochdale Folk Festival 18-21st June with concerts, dancing, free entertainment, family events and more in the heart of Rochdale. Rochdale Feel Good Festival has confirmed its return on Saturday, 22 August, promising another showcase of top-class entertainment, food and culture. The new date comes hot on the heels of this year's festival, which was headlined by The Coral and featured another 40 acts across the day.

VISUAL ART Touchstones, Littleborough Coach House and Ebor Studios are amongst the local places to access high quality visual art. For more active involvement FRAG (Friends of Rochdale Art Gallery) meet on the second Tuesday of each month at Touchstones from 12:45 till 1:45 pm. An opportunity to join kindred spirits in supporting and complementing the work of Rochdale Art Gallery and other artistic ventures. Talks by stirring speakers, appealing practitioners and compelling commentators, plus visits, trips to other galleries and places of artistic/cultural interest. Coming up Tuesday 14th January will be Under the Sun Paintings by Barry Cook. He produces representational paintings – bold, colourful and imaginative, using pencil, watercolour, gouache and ink. Barry Cook’s work is inspired by his interest in the natural world, folklore, stories and music. His latest works are about people, places, artefacts and time; he describes them as ‘Grid Paintings with a Twist’.

...AND A DIPLODOCUS! The Natural History Museum's famous dinosaur cast, Dippy the Diplodocus, has left the museum for the first time to go a on a tour of the UK, and Rochdale has been selected as one of just 8 venues across the UK which will host him during the tour.

Around 11,000 people attended the festival in August 2019. The 2020 festival will include live music across indoor venues, a main stage sponsored by The Flying Horse Hotel near our worldfamous town hall, an extended food and drink village and other entertainment.

You'll be able to participate in Natural History adventures taking place in Rochdale between 10 February to 28 June. You will be able to meet Dippy the dinosaur at Number One Riverside and enjoy a Dippy Exhibition at Touchstones Rochdale, where you can delve even deeper into the world of dinosaurs and nature.

Past Feel Good main stage performers include The Coral, Feeder, Razorlight, The Fratellis, Cast, Scouting for Girls, Fun Lovin' Criminals, The Hoosiers, Toploader, The Feeling, The South, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and The Lightning Seeds. As in previous years, another local band will get chance to play the main stage in front of a crowd of thousands. This year Rochdale country rock 4-piece Between The Vines won the coveted Battle of the Bands slot. The next competition will be launched in April, with local acts encouraged to apply to win the prized slot.

The exhibition will include a prehistoric swampland, depicting the Rochdale of millions of years ago, and a dinosaur gallery. You can also see the fossil of Rochdale’s famous scorpion, which is 300 million years old, even older than the dinosaurs, and explore sustainability in the biodiversity gallery.

This is just a flavour of what is coming up in 2020 across our borough; never let it be said that, ‘it’s boring around here, there’s nothing going on’. Steve Cooke Arts Columnist www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

4 CONFIDENCE

mental wellbeing

STEPS TO SUCCESS &

As part of Style's focus on mental health and wellbeing, Lisa Drake, RTT, NLP, TLT Practitioner and Life Coach, from Rapid Change Hypnotherapy & Coaching Practice in Rochdale, shares four steps to greater success and increased confidence... Once you understand how your mind works, you can make your mind work for you instead of against you. We come into this world with the most amazing brain that is just like a computer; it’s capable of doing so much, but there's no instruction manual telling us how to get the best from ourselves. So we just muddle through, when we’re actually capable of so much more. Understanding some of the rules of the mind will help you to get a deeper understanding of yourself and also how to programme yourself for success and lasting confidence. 1. EVERY THOUGHT OR IDEA CREATES A PHYSICAL REACTION Ideas or thoughts that have strong emotional content, will create the same reactions in the body over and over again. So if you have a strong negative emotion linked to risk taking, e.g. interviews, presentations, public speaking – they will move into your subconscious mind and create a very real and negative effect on you. Did you know that fear and excitement are exactly the same feeling? It’s the way we interpret it that makes us react either negatively (nervous) or positively (excited). So if you change your thoughts to 'I’m so excited about this’, instead of ‘I’m so nervous about this’, your mind will create a different kind of energy.

22

2. WHAT YOU FOCUS ON, YOU GET MORE OF The brain and nervous system only respond to the pictures you make in your head and the words you say to yourself. If you expect to fail and say things like ‘I’m no good at this’ or 'I’m bound to mess it up’, then the chances are you will. Instead of expecting to fail, expect to succeed fabulously. Expect to feel confident and these expectations will be realised. Remember, we were all born with confidence, otherwise we would never have learned to walk and talk, as we wouldn’t have had the confidence to keep going, even when we fell down or said the words wrong! 3. IMAGINATION IS MORE POWERFUL WHEN DEALING WITH THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND Reason is easily overruled by imagination. I see many clients in my practice who suffer with anxiety. Most of them tell me, "logically I know there’s nothing to be scared of but I can’t shake the feeling that something bad’s going to happen". Here’s the thing - emotion will always overrule logic. Many people who suffer with anxiety will replay a story in their head of the worst possible outcomes, sometimes to a situation that hasn’t even happened or is never going to happen. Then their mind will create the emotional response to that - anxiety, fear, nervousness. Your imagination and your ability to see yourself as confident, with phenomenal coping skills, is extremely powerful and will help you to move towards the desired results, if you really allow yourself to visualise it - visualisation is simply using your imagination!

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

mental wellbeing 4. WHEN DEALING WITH THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND AND IT’S FUNCTIONS – THE GREATER THE CONSCIOUS EFFORT, THE LESS THE SUBCONSCIOUS RESPONSE What I’m talking about here is willpower. Willpower is not the tool to use to create inner change. I think we’ve all tried so hard to remember something, yet just can’t remember it. Then, as we stop trying, the answer comes to mind. This is because the more conscious effort you make, the less the subconscious responds. When you’re making physical changes by using physical exercise, it’s true that the more effort you put in, the better results you will get. However, when you’re making inner changes to your thoughts, beliefs and expectations, the opposite applies. You don’t need to try. You just need to let your subconscious mind absorb new ideas, accept them and have new expectations which will be met.

Try this… • Close your eyes. Get an image in your mind of how you want to be and hold it in your mind. • Relax into the image and use language that matches the image, for example 'I’m strong and confident', 'I’m capable of anything', 'I can do this easily and effortlessly', 'I can communicate confidently'. • Keep re-running that picture in your mind - make it bigger and brighter, make it as if it is now. • When you do this, your mind thinks ‘I’ve been here before, I know how to do this, it’s easy’ and it will eventually accept it as the norm.

I hope these hints and tips have helped you. Remember, the one thing we can change in any given moment is our thoughts – make them work for you instead of against you. Lisa Drake

FESTIVE ENTERTAINING MADE EASY Tom McNeeney, Head Chef of The Oxford Pub, Rochdale, shares his tips for top party treats...

It’s officially party season! Now whether it’s a few festive nibbles with friends and family or a full blown Hootenanny, odds are you’re going to get landed with some entertaining to do before the year’s out, so here’s a few of my quick fix party treats. Knock together a couple of these, put the fizz on ice, lash some fancy crisps in bowls and you’re the Nigella of Rochdale, everyone will wonder how you make it look so easy!

BEETROOT, GOATS CHEESE & CANDIED WALNUT TARTS Now these delicious little mouthfuls are great party snacks; the recipe makes more candied walnuts then you need but sprinkled on top of salads or ice creams they are an absolute delight. And scaled up in size this would make a fantastic summer lunch too! Ingredients: 12 mini pastry cases 100g soft goats cheese 50g cream cheese few sprigs of thyme 3 cooked beetroots 1 lemon 100g caster sugar good handful of shelled walnuts 20g of parmesan & a few pea shoots (if you’re feeling fancy) 26

Now when it comes to party food the dream is not to be spending hours stressing out ahead of your do, to that end, buy mini pastry cases from the supermarket. Cream together your cheeses with the leaves off a few sprigs of thyme. Cube your beetroot, small but not tiny, and pop into a bowl. Using a fine grater add in the zest from your lemon then squeeze in the juice, add in a few twists of black pepper, the goats cheese is bringing the salt to the party so leave it out here. For the candied walnuts you want to have a baking tray lined with greaseproof ready because once the walnuts are in the sugar you need to work quick. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

In a non stick pan, over a medium heat, melt your sugar, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon. Once it’s turned a delightful caramel colour add in your walnuts, stir to coat them and pour them immediately onto the greaseproof paper. Give them fifteen minutes to cool, then place another sheet of greaseproof on top and using a rolling pin gently tap them into crunchy, sugary morsels of delight. Fill each pastry case with your cheese mix then spoon on a nice pile of beetroot - you want a little height to it. Sprinkle over a few of your candied walnuts, finally grate over the parmesan, lash on a few pea shoots if you fancy and your lucky guests are going to think they’ve gone to Jamie’s for New Years Eve.

SALTED CARAMEL & CHOCOLATE TARTS No cook should be without a couple of good dessert recipes up their sleeve and once you’ve mastered this ridiculously good salted caramel and the perfect chocolate ganache there’s a whole world of possibilities at your fingertips! Again, we’re using bought pastry cases here because, frankly, who’s got the time? Ingredients: 12 mini pastry cases 200g caster sugar 25g butter (cubed) 100ml cream flakey sea salt 200g milk chocolate plus extra for shaving if you want 100ml double cream To make your salted caramel, simply add your sugar into a non stick saucepan, place on a medium heat and, stirring occasionally, allow to melt until it reaches a delicious amber shade then add in your butter and mix. It will bubble a little when you add the butter and will be hotter than the sun, so exercise extreme caution.

Now remove from the heat and slowly mix in your cream and once you’re happy with the consistency sprinkle in some flaky sea salt (about 1/2 a teaspoon). For the ganache, first break your chocolate into small pieces and dump into a mixing bowl, now in a separate saucepan over a medium heat warm your cream until it’s just about to simmer. Once it’s nearly simmering carefully pour your cream into the mixing bowl full of chocolate.

Mix the two together with a plastic spatula until it comes together, you’re looking for a silky, luxurious texture. Fill each tart case a third with salted caramel then top with your chocolate ganache; if you’re a perfectionist you’ll want to use a piping bag but it’s not a necessity. Grate over a little extra chocolate (or use a potato peeler to make some chocolate curls) and sprinkle over a little extra sea salt and you’re finished! Couldn’t be easier!

HONEY, FIG & MOZZARELLA SKEWERS Not so much a recipe, more an assembly job but these are an absolute delight. They look and taste beautiful and are minimum effort which is what you need when time’s marching on and party time is looming!

assemble the skewers without the honeycomb then drizzle the lot in honey.

followed by a few slithers of mozzarella (folded over gracefully) then stick into the flesh of your fig thirds.

Onto a cocktail stick you want to thread on a piece of honeycomb,

Arrange tastefully on a plate, twist over a little black pepper, voilà!

Ingredients: 6 figs cut in thirds Ball of smoked mozzarella 50g fresh honeycomb or runny honey This couldn’t be easier; get your hands on some smoked mozzarella (big Tesco have it) slice it as finely as you can and if you can get your hands on some proper honeycomb you want 18 small cubes of the stuff. If you can’t find proper honeycomb runny honey works lovely too, just www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER Trevor Hoyle recalls a rousing occasion for Rochdale AFC and a lifelong memory for Dale’s teenage hero. Manchester United 1-1 Rochdale Third Round Carabao Cup (United won 5-3 on penalties) Perched high up with a bird’s-eye view, engulfed in a cheering, singing, shouting mass of enthusiastic Dale fans (numbering nearly 6000 we were told later) I wondered where most of them had suddenly appeared from — and devoutly wished these passionate supporters might one day soon put in an appearance at Spotland. What a difference it would make! A home crowd filling up half the ground’s capacity, urging their team on with the deafening roar that echoed around Old Trafford in the Third Round of the Carabao Cup, that memorable night in September. Still, mustn’t be churlish. They had turned up hoping for a good contest by the underdogs, and that’s exactly what they got from a Dale side that was straight out of the Brian Barry-Murphy playbook: tight and disciplined with a calm, controlled attitude that was even more impressive given the grandeur and highlycharged drama of the occasion. Early doors it was United who were on the front foot, with efforts from Marcos Rojo, Andrea Pereira and Jesse Lingard. Dale’s onloan Spanish keeper Robert Sánchez has a confident, casual style — so laid-back sometimes he might be horizontal, leaving our hearts in our mouths — but he certainly looked the part on the big stage and commanded his area with authority.

Much to Dale’s credit, they kept their shape and their resolve, and were rewarded with a superb goal (possibly deflected) by yet another teenager — 16-year old Luke Matheson, Dale’s youngestever first squad player. Again it was playmaker Ollie Rathbone who started the move with a darting run into the left side of the penalty area before a skilful overhead flick to the back post where young Matheson, racing in, met it with an unstoppable volley. And this time it definitely WAS unstoppable. The match ended 1-1 which meant a penalty shootout. Having made several brilliant saves to keep Dale in the game, we really had faith that Sánchez was in such tremendous form he’d pull off another and make this a night of glory. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Jimmy Keohane’s spot-kick was saved, with United slotting home all theirs, Daniel James scoring the winner. The final result didn’t seem to dampen Rochdale’s spirits as the fans rose en masse to cheer and applaud their team, who, linking arms with manager Brian Barry-Murphy, accepted the plaudits for a tremendous performance. Without doubt a night to remember— not least for 16-year old Luke Matheson, Dale’s youngest-ever player, who will never forget scoring the debut goal of his professional career against United at Old Trafford. How’s that for a memory!

Even so, we might have been a goal down had Paul Pogba not missed an absolute sitter — heading over the bar from five yards when it looked easier to score. Lingard also had a decent chance with a header that looped onto the roof of the net. The teams seemed evenly matched, with Jimmy Keohane and Aaron Morley looking comfortable in their defensive roles. Hopes rose to fever pitch when Dale had their first real chance to take the lead. The move was started by Ollie Rathbone (himself a graduate of United’s Academy) who ran through their defence before squaring the ball from the byline into the path of Callum Camps whose shot, with the goalkeeper well beaten, was destined for the back of the net. Ready to leap up and cheer a certain goal, Dale fans were stunned into silence when Aaron Wan-Bissaka stuck out a leg and cleared off the line. The deadlock was finally broken in the 68th minute by 18-year old Mason Greenwood. He dummied a defender and his lethal leftfoot shot, low and hard, gave Sánchez no chance.

Luxury relaxation at The Beauty Loft REVIEW: The Beauty Loft by Amy Pierce, Rochdale Since opening in June 2018, The Beauty Loft by Amy Pierce has become incredibly popular with local ladies, and I soon discovered why on my recent visit. The Beauty Loft oozes tranquility, from the wonderful fragrance of Decleor products to the soft music and soothing interior design. The Beauty Loft offers many luxurious treatments, to ensure you're pampered from head to toe. I chose a Full Body Massage, with one of the highly experienced therapists, who tailored the massage to focus on problem areas. She helped to ease all muscle tension, providing a deeply restful and stress-relieving experience. Situated above Dominic Gregory Hair Establishment, The Beauty Loft is a ladies-only salon, where women can relax and unwind, in a peaceful haven away from daily stresses. No husbands or children allowed... and there's a very good reason for that. Owner Amy Pierce commented, "I wanted to create a relaxing space, especially for women, where they can step out of their busy lives for a couple of hours, and slow down while being pampered. We all deserve some ‘me’ time". The stress-free salon is certainly world's apart from Amy's previous career, as Art Director on Coronation Street. After stepping away from the television industry when she started a family, Amy retrained as a beauty therapist, nail technician, makeup artist, semi-permanent makeup artist

34

and educator. She worked for many years in the beauty industry and managed a nail and beauty academy in Rochdale Town Centre. Bringing her wealth of skills she believes education is key to her and the team’s ongoing development. It's obvious that the salon is a dream come true for Amy, who says she has found her 'perfect place in life'. In a fateful turn of events, Amy saw the current premises, above Dominic Gregory Hair Establishment, become available to let the same night she gave a stem cell donation for her sister's lifesaving transplant to treat a rare, deadly blood disorder. She visited her sister who was having chemo in hospital isolation, who encouraged her to grasp the opportunity. Amy is accompanied by a wonderful friendly team, with highly trained therapists Emma, Zoe, Rebecca and Ellie. Reflecting on the success of the past year, Amy commented: “I just want to say thank you to all our lovely customers who have been so supportive. We’re looking forward to pampering more new ladies in the new year. We've got lots of new exciting treatments and products coming in 2020 and we can't wait to share them with you." FROM WOODSTOCK TO DRAKE STREET In a previous Style article I described how Drake Street's historic Champness Hall hosted a wide variety of musical stars over the years from the Halle Orchestra and big bands to Thin Lizzy and folk groups. One of the most unusual group of musicians – and certainly one of the most famous – to ever play there were the Incredible String Band. You may not all be familiar by the name, but The Incredible String Band's admirers include Billy Connolly, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger and former Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams. Apart from the odd mention in a television documentary, the Incredible String Band have been somewhat erased from popular music history. They were at the heart of the Summer of Love of 1967 and hugely popular amongst the “underground” movement at the time. The Incredible String Band were, to use that misused word, unique. They sounded like no other performers. Formed by two Scottish singer

songwriters, Mike Heron and Robin Williamson, the band later included their girlfriends, Rose Simpson and Licorice McKechnie. Both Mike and Robin were skilled multi-instrumentalists playing guitars, harmonicas; whistles; violin, keyboards and all manner of exotic instruments. Like John Lennon and Paul McCartney in The Beatles, the two men were equally blessed with distinctive but complementary musical talents. Thanks to the expert management by American Joe Boyd, the Incredible String Band moved swiftly from Edinburgh folk clubs and “underground” London clubs such as Middle Earth and UFO to major concert halls in Britain and America. In 1968, the band's third album 'The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter' peaked at Number 5 in the British album charts. Like another of their admirers, Led Zeppelin, the String Band's British television appearances were few and far between. Neither group performed on BBC-2's The Old Grey Whistle Test or its predecessor, Colour Me Pop. On YouTube, you can find Mike and Robin guesting on The Julie Felix Show. There is also footage of the band appearing on German TV's Beat Club. In August 1969 – fifty years ago – the Incredible String Band played the Woodstock Festival of Arts in upstate New York. They were on the bill alongside such names as Jimi Hendrix, Joan Baez, Santana, Joe Cocker and The Who. Unfortunately, torrential rain ( and the fear of electrocution) prevented the String Band performing on the Friday night. They eventually appeared the following afternoon, sandwiched between two rock bands. It was not their ideal audience. Woodstock made many artists international stars, but the String Band never broke through to such success and recognition. Although the band did not appear in the film of Woodstock, there are – luckily – short excerpts from their set on good old YouTube. The Incredible String Band played twice at Rochdale's Champness Hall. Their first appearance on Saturday 11th November 1972 was the band's second date on an autumn British tour. Rose Simpson had left the band a year or so earlier. Licorice had also gone and was replaced by Gerard Dott, a bespectacled jazz musician. The concert was promoted by ROCLAS (Rochdale Libraries

36

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

And Arts Service) with tickets priced from 50p to £1 which could be purchased at the Town Hall booking office.

Fans came from as far as Blackburn, Bolton and Halifax to see their beloved String Band. A friend of mine attended the concert as a teenager and can clearly remember the evening. A beautiful programme/mini-poster was available on the night. This was an important event in Rochdale which was not a town that was often visited by “name” bands. The fact that the concert was held at the weekend and not on a “school night” enabled younger people to attend. Most teenagers could afford the cheapest tickets : good value at only 50p. (That is about £6.50 in today's prices.) As Billy Connolly explained in a BBC documentary, at a String Band concert “they were always surrounded by the most exotic looking people , these people you'd never see in your life would come out of the woodwork..people in velvet clothes and big lacy collars...!”

Champness Hall only rarely featured rock bands; later, Quintessence would play there, as would local Oldham heroes, Barclay James Harvest. But usually it was brass bands such as the Brighouse & Rastrick Band or folk acts such as the Spinners and the Ian Campbell Folk Group. The Incredible String Band returned to Champness Hall just fifteen months later, also on a Saturday: 16th February 1974. This was the band's final British tour. By now, Mike and Robin were moving in different musical directions. Gerard Dott had left the band and they had been augmented by a rock rhythm section. Again, the council's Libraries & Arts Services promoted the concert and the band were billed as “Folk Rock Giants”(!). Tickets cost 70p in advance from either the Town Hall or Bradley's Records on Lord Street or were 80p on the door. February 1974 was an uncertain time in Britain (sound familiar?). After strikes and power cuts during Edward Heath's time as prime minister, there was about to be the first of the year's TWO General Elections. Perhaps the String Band's ethereal music offered a welcome distraction to the political chaos? The String Band's music is not always easy listening - their voices and instruments are, perhaps an acquired taste (like Marmite?)- but they often have moments of brilliance. Try listening to them on Spotify or YouTube; I especially recommend the band's second and third albums, 5000 Spirits and the afore-mentioned The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter. Robin's song, 'First Girl I Loved' became something of a classic and was covered by many other singers, including Judy Collins who changed the “girl” to a “boy”. Both Mike and Robin continue to make music, nearly half a century later. Mike has worked with Scottish folk rock band, Trembling Bells and also his daughter, Georgia. Robin, meanwhile, performs with his wife, Bina. Were any Style readers in the audiences for the String Band's two concerts at Champness Hall? Can anyone remember the clothes and hairstyles of that era? Email us with your memories and photographs! Richard Lysons Thanks to Rochdale Local Studies and Marc Gleeson.

The Aesthetic Rooms is a nurse led non-surgical cosmetic clinic, in Norden, Rochdale, specialising in anti aging and skin rejuvenating treatments. For a natural looking ‘tweakment’ or a more dramatic result the clinic can develop a treatment plan individual to your needs. As a registered nurse prescriber, owner Zoe Pearson leads the clinic in delivering professional and safe procedures.

PROFHILO - 'THE INJECTABLE MOISTURISER' One treatment with a real buzz around it is a hyaluronic acid based procedure called Profhilo. Popular with celebrities for its natural results, this treatment dramatically improves the skin texture and is often referred to as ‘the injectable moisturiser’. Profhilo is a non invasive procedure that boosts four different types of collagen and elastin for improved skin firmness. The cost of this treatment is £500 for a course of two over 8 weeks. DERMAPLANING For anyone looking to treat their skin over the winter months, the clinic offers a fantastic range of facials and minimal downtime skin resurfacing treatments.

WRINKLE INJECTIONS The most popular treatment in the clinic is wrinkle reduction using muscle relaxing injections for frown lines, crows feet and across the forehead. These static lines often trap make up or make patients look angry. The injections work under the skin to relax the muscles which will improve the appearance of the skin and smooth wrinkles.

The Dermaplaning facial with ice globes is a favourite choice as it involves exfoliating the skin to remove dead cells and fine vellous hair which can trap dirt, followed by an aromatherapy steam and extraction work on blackheads with ice globes to finish which stimulate blood circulation and oxygenate the skin, they can treat sinus pain, puffy eyes, headaches and migraines. The globes tighten skin and reduce large pores. Head over to www.theaestheticrooms.co.uk to book online and see current special offers.

SHOW YOUR DEPRECIATION FOR... As we all know, the largest cost of ownership when it comes to vehicles is depreciation, just like death (which at least is only going to happen once) and taxes, losing money on your pride and joy is inevitable. It is no secret that the biggest hit comes in the first few years of ownership and therefore I’ve decided to have a look at what bargains are out there after someone else has already borne the brunt of depreciation. JAGUAR F-PACE Just over three years ago the F-Pace was launched with a massive fanfare that saw a stunt driver drive Jaguar’s first SUV round a 19-metre tall loop-the-loop and into the Guinness book of records. For a significant period after the launch there was a long waiting list for the F-Pace and second-hand cars were changing hands for more than the list price new.

40

Well, three and a half years later the fuss has died down and the first cars sold are now of an age that requires an MOT and, most importantly, the fleet cars are being put onto the market. This means that a clean, well maintained 80,000 mile car can be had for around £20,000, that’s about half the price they were new, depending on specification.

There are plenty of cars coming to market with prices dropping all the time but for best value, avoid the 2-wheel-drive Prestige edition cars and look for something that has a few optional extras. Don’t be put off by higher-miles ex-fleet cars as these will have spent their lives on the motorway being serviced on the dot with no expense spared.

Out of a crowded marketplace, the F-Pace is my favourite of the executive SUVs. Aside from, in my opinion, being the most handsome, I also find it the most rewarding drive. Jaguar made a big effort to get the F-Pace to feel like a sports saloon and despite its height, it really has achieved this. There is very little body roll and it feels eager, even with the “base” 2-0 litre 180bhp diesel engine.

ABARTH 124 SPIDER

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

I make no apologies for using this column this edition to indulge in my personal favourite cars and to be honest there is no purer driving pleasure than a small two-seater convertible. Of course, by the time you read this we could well be knee-deep in snow with the mercury refusing to budge from its bubble at the bottom of the thermometer but

putting that to one side, the Abarth 124 is quite possibly my favourite car on sale today. Based on the ever-popular Mazda MX-5, I prefer the retro styling of the 124 along with the Multi-Air Turbo engine range that whilst not quite as torquey as the units found in its Japanese sibling, make a much nicer noise and rev much free. That said, driving the 124 is not about power but control. The little Abarth really makes you feel ‘involved’ with what is going on. The feedback from the steering gives you almost subliminal information about the road being covered while the twitches from the rear two wheels under heavy acceleration can be easily controlled way before anything becomes too sideways.

FORD FIESTA I couldn’t let this column go without mentioning one of my favourite genre of cars and that is the supermini. Over the years all cars have grown and put on weight to meet the safety standards we expect in this day and age. Now in its seventh generation, the current car is larger than any of its ancestors and Ford has used the space well. The interior feels light and airy for a small car and the boot is surprisingly commodious. Perhaps where the Fiesta excels, along with its predecessors is out on the road. While the suspension has not been set up for a track day, out on deserted A and B roads, the Fiesta will bring a smile to the face. Once back in the city, the Fiesta feels nimble and thanks to excellent all round vision, parking is a doddle, as any car in this market segment should be.

Thanks partially to the prevalence of ex-hire cars, the Fiesta can be quite a bargain on the second hand market. An 18-month-old wellspecced mid-range example of the latest generation car can be had for around £8,000, half of the full retail price, with of course another 18-months of that full manufacturer’s warranty remaining.

Of course, with all used car buys, make sure you trawl the market thoroughly and make sure that there is plenty of history and that the car has been properly maintained. Unless you want to speculate on a classic, then unfortunately depreciation is inevitable but by going for something that is two to three years old then the biggest brunt should already have been burdened. Mark D’Apice Motoring Expert

If you don’t mind not being the first name on the log book there are bargains to be had, especially at this time of year. A two-year-old automatic example with 25,000 miles on the clock can be had for around £17k, that’s over £13k less than the list price from new. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

B E A U T Y: I t ' s a l l a b o u t t h e b r o w s Eyebrows have been in the spotlight more than ever recently, and for good reason. Well groomed brows can frame the face and highlight your best features. Many of us are in pursuit of the thick, bushy eyebrows we crave, particularly those who have a less than full brow. Luckily, there are countless brow products and treatments available to us, including the popular HD brows which involves tinting or lightening the hairs, then threading, waxing, tweezing and finishing off with make up and brow products. Alternatively, you could have a simple brow shape and tint or, if really lacking in the brow thickness department, you could have microblading or semi permanent make up. And now there's a hot new brow trend which can deliver the feathery look so often seen in magazine shoots and on the runways. It's called brow lamination, but thankfully, it doesn’t involve popping your head through an office laminating machine! Rather it is an innovative beauty treatment which has brought a new, altogether more appealing meaning to the word. “Brow lamination is a process of restructuring the brow hairs to keep them in a desired shape,” says Natalie Piper, international trainer at the Eyelash Design Company. “It’s the perfect treatment for anyone whose hairs are irregular in direction, have any gaps in between said hairs, or who want that groomed, brushed-up look.” If you want to acheive “I woke up like this” eyebrows, lamination involves two different treatment solutions that do for our brows what a lash lift does for our lashes. The first is brushed through eyebrow hairs to make them softer and more malleable. Next, the brows are brushed into the desired position and a ‘laminating’ solution is applied, to keep the strands in place. Those who have an abundance of brow hairs will reap the benefits of lamination as it can fix thick hairs in place, with a hold that no product could previously deliver. Lamination is great for unruly brows as it corrects the position of the brows and makes them permanently brushed up and groomed. You don’t have thick brows though, those with finer brows can benefit too: “It helps give the appearance of slightly fuller brows and the hairs that are there can be styled to cover any sparse areas,” says Piper. Not only that, the effects can last up to eight weeks. Most notably, it’s a great alternative to microblading, which works on the skin rather than the hairs. Instead, lamination helps to add colour and definition to brows without any aftereffects that take time to heal. So who is on board for the new era of laminating? There's not an office in sight! Emma Fitton / The Retreat For any additional information on treatments or products mentioned in this article please contact The Retreat where our friendly team will assist you. COLLEGE GETS CUTTING EDGE UPGRADES Hopwood Hall College opened its brand new Hair and Beauty training centre in fabulous style, trailblazing a path for a new generation of top talent in Greater Manchester. The College’s Rochdale campus has had its entire fourth floor transformed into an amazing new hair and beauty hub, positioning itself at the forefront for training in hair and beauty in Greater Manchester. Rochdale’s most prestigious hair stylist and owner of longstanding ‘Couzens’, Greg Couzens, opened the new training hub along with former Mayor of Manchester and Mr Gay UK, Carl Austin-Behan, who made time between his role as LGBT Advisor to Andy Burnham to visit the College. Hair & beauty salons from across the Borough were out in force to support the Grand Opening and were keen to see for themselves the starting point for many of their future employees. The new massage parlour, hair salon and beauty salon will complement the College’s existing commercial Riverside Salon that already holds thousands of clients every year and serves as one of the best platforms for aspiring stylists and beauticians. Current students at Hopwood Hall College gave demonstrations to guests and local employers after the College’s Riverside Restaurant welcomed attendees to the event. Hopwood Hall College Principal & CEO, Julia Heap, said to the attending guests: “This launch represents exciting news for Rochdale and Greater Manchester, it’s a superb upgrade to our hair and beauty students’ learning journey. “Now more than ever we can offer direct links to the latest innovations and practices, allowing students to specialise in their chosen field or gain wider industry experience that will enhance their employability.” Greg Couzens, one of Rochdale’s most renown hair stylists and owner of Couzens - a salon that has been established since 1983, offered his views: “It’s a tough industry to make it in but today I have seen some exciting talent coming through. Hopwood Hall College’s facilities will offer students the perfect opportunity to build their skills and have the best tools to make it in the world of hair and beauty.” His sentiments were echoed by Carl Austin-Behan, who was making his second visit to the College after previously working with the College’s Hopwood Pride group: “Amazing facilities. I’ve been really impressed, I didn’t realise this level of training was available at student level. I love coming to Hopwood as the students and staff are an inspiring example of the potential the region holds, with facilities like this there’s opportunity for them to maximise that potential.” Applications to study at Hopwood Hall College’s Hair & Beauty centre can be made on the College’s website: www.hopwood.ac.uk/courses/hair-beauty 46

LOCAL HISTORY: ROCHDALE IN A SPIN Surprisingly, the sale and popularity of vinyl records has recently increased, not to 1970’s levels but, hey, it is better than nothing. There is a romanticism about vinyl records that cd’s just cannot compete with. The sound is ‘warm’ and you can read the sleeve notes without resorting to the use of a magnifying glass.

Rochdalians of a certain age will recall buying their records from the town’s, then, premier record shop, Bradleys. Before the town was so thoughtfully improved for our benefit in the very early 70’s, Bradleys was at the lower end of Toad Lane, just off Yorkshire Street and next door to a crafts supply shop.

Vinyl, which disappeared from major stores in the late 1980’s, is back. It never went away, us fans had to seek it out in specialist shops, taking it home and dropping a stylus into those crackly, analogue grooves of a black, plastic disc. Like beards on celebrities, they are back in fashion. As a person who has one or two ‘LP’s’ taking up cupboard space and a box full of ‘singles’ relegated to the loft, playing vinyl always reminds me of the shops in Rochdale where I once bought records. Music in the 1960’s and 1970’s was a tactile pursuit with bulky equipment and paraphernalia needed to play your latest purchase; no popping a small silver disc into a slot back then.

If you were regulars at the CubiKlub or, fuelled by soft drinks, at the Town Hall Chambers Friday night discos then, come Saturday, the chances are that you would be handing over money in exchange for the latest hits, having to ask the shop assistant to get the disc from the back of Bradleys’ counter. Bradleys eventually moved to the corner of the Walk, complete with racks which allowed you to look at the records. The very artistic LP covers adorned the walls and windows and I think there were headphones secured to the counter that allowed you to listen before buying though shops soon stopped this helpful feature; I always felt awkward asking to use them. Rochdale had a number of coffee shops with a juke box where you could acquaint yourself with some

48

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

records whilst drinking a very milky coffee. The discs in these juke boxes had the middle removed to enable the machinery to select them when you pressed the buttons. Singles had been immensely popular in the 1960’s, played by pop stations like Radio Luxembourg which we listened to late into the night. Used juke box singles were sold from a stall on Rochdale market in the mid 1970’s. Boxes of these discs were explored for bargains at a fraction of their usual price when the ‘punk’ bands revived the 7-inch singles popularity. A little plastic adaptor called a ‘spider’ was needed in their middles to play them at home. Bigger stores sold records, too. Woolworths, Boots and W.H. Smith’s and, like Bradleys, sold essential items that you needed to play records on your ‘stereo’. Stylus of various kinds would be on display on the counter, all different depending on the make of your turntable so it was essential that you had the correct part number. Smith’s stocked, mostly mainstream albums but could surprise you with something as incongruous as Black Sabbath nestled next to Val Doonican. The record section always had a strong smell of plastic as the albums had plastic protecting covers which you could purchase for 20p each for your own records along with cardboard sleeves for your singles and also disc cleaners, a soft cloth for removing dust off your vinyl as well as cassette cleaners. Annoyingly, tapes could tangle when being played rendering them useless. Smith’s were the first store to stop selling vinyl, entirely, when cd’s first appeared on the market in the late 1980’s. All the stores had the week’s ‘top 20’ chart on the wall for those who bought pop singles. Woolworths and Boots had record sections but at Smith’s you could buy your ‘New Musical Express’ or ‘Sounds’ music paper to see what all the rock bands were up to that week and read the ‘record reviews’ or ‘gig guides’ knowing that you couldn’t afford any of these. A stall on the inside market (was it ‘Save Records’?) would also have to be visited.

‘Black Sedan Records’. You had to climb some black painted stairs to look at the ‘cool’ essential, vinyl LP’s which were all rock or ‘progressive’ and I bought Z.Z. Top albums there, I recall. Many record shops have come and gone from the town centre over the years, though none with the romanticism of the great 1960’s and 1970’s when vinyl ruled. After 1990 or so, cd’s became the main trade of these shops. ‘Our Price’ on Yorkshire Street was, I think, the last shop selling vinyl though there were a number of record fairs for vinyl at Champness Hall in the mid 1990’s. ‘HMV’, ‘Music Zone’, and ‘Andy’s Records, all selling cd’s, have come and gone. Happily, I can end on a positive note for we have two outlets which are absolute havens for the vinyl enthusiast. On Drake Street, the excellent ‘Rocks Off’ has been trading for an amazing 30 years whilst just up the road, on Heywood’s Market Street ‘Vinyl Groove’ has served record buyers for over 20 years. Both are great places to browse and pick up albums that you missed ‘back then’.

Vinyl is back, so dust off your garage-stored vinyl discs and enjoy the great sounds and memories of buying records in Rochdale (and maybe pop out to buy some, once again!).

Paul Brady

Yorkshire Street would be bustling with shoppers and Drake Street’s ‘boutiques’ had trendy clothes like platform shoes, tank-tops and cheese-cloth shirts, whilst all the town’s hairdressers were busy giving customers ‘feather-cuts’. For only a short while in the 1970’s there was a record shop on Fleece Street which was called www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

ROCHDALE ANIMAL CENTRE CELEBRATES 80TH ANNIVERSARY 1939-2019 2019 marks the 80th anniversary of Rochdale Animal Centre and 2020 will mark the 130th anniversary of the RSPCA Rochdale and District branch. As far back as 1889 there were people in Rochdale who wanted to help vulnerable animals. As a result the Rochdale branch of the RSPCA was founded in 1890. Although supporting local animals, the branch made a significant contribution during the Great War. By 1918, the Rochdale branch had raised £250/12s (£14,783 today) for the Sick and Wounded Horses at the Front Appeal. Initially, there was a site in operation at 116 Molesworth Street, but in 1939 the Rochdale Branch and the then National Veterinary Medicine Association (now known as the British Veterinary Association) agreed to set up a new animal clinic and shelter in the heart of Rochdale. They acquired the former Woodman Hotel on the corner of High Street and Redcross Street, which was converted into the animal shelter.

Soon after the outbreak of World War Two, on 6 December 1939, the Mayor of Rochdale officially opened the new clinic and animal shelter on the same site that the Rochdale Animal Centre is located today. Over time the Rochdale Animal Centre outgrew the former Woodman Hotel and a new purpose-built Animal Centre was built. However by 1998 it was realised that the Rochdale Animal Centre needed major refurbishment as, without up-to-date facilities, it would not meet the current standards required by the RSPCA. This turned out to be the catalyst needed to reignite the passions of animal lovers across the district. Branch members appealed to the people of Rochdale and money, goodwill and offers of help came from all sides. £600,000 was raised and the Centre was not only refitted but extended to cater for a wider variety of animals and reopened in May 2006. Today, the branch is more active than ever and now also caters for wildlife casualties. The Animal Centre is in full swing 24 hours a day, and the staff and volunteers in eleven charity shops work hard to raise money all year round. They have a great team, all working with enthusiasm, and dedication. Although the demands on animal welfare services have changed over the years, sadly abandonment, abuse and neglect still exists along with unlicensed puppy breeding and dog fighting. To ensure this branch continues to serve the animals and people of Rochdale & District for a further 80 years, the RSPCA urge local animal lovers to come and join them and discover the benefits of volunteering for and with animals. The Branch Secretary would be interested to hear from anyone who has memories or photos of the Rochdale Animal Centre and the work of the RSPCA in Rochdale over the last 80 years, or earlier.

Photo: Cat rescue 1949 (Hannah Haynes ‘Rochdale: a press photographer’s view. The Photographs of Clifford C Ashton’). A large crowd watched Roy Baker swim across the River Roch near the Molesworth Street Bridge, after a cat had fallen into the river and was seen hanging by its forepaws to a sheer brick wall. Roy Baker swam back with the cat held above his head. He and his father Harry, manager of the local RSPCA, then took it to safety. A policeman with a ladder had earlier failed to reach the cat. OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP... Make Christmas special for the animals by donating to the RSPCA's Christmas shoe box appeal. They are looking for donations of toys, blankets, and treats to give to the ‘residents’ who will be with them over the Christmas period. Every week local animal lovers fill the pet food collection bins in Morrisons with their donations. Wet kitten food and dry adult cat food are particularly welcomed. FOR MORE INFORMATION... community news ROCHDALE FRIENDS OF TOURCOING

Friends of Tourcoing Association aims to interest and inform the people of the Rochdale Borough about France and in particular the twinned town of Tourcoing. The association promotes friendship, mutual respect and diversity. The civic twinning relationship with Tourcoing has achieved over 60 years and the friendship group over 50 years, bringing English and French together in community spirit and warm relationship. The two associations each have a lively group of members including single people, families with children and couples; people of all ages. Secretary Kathryn Rennie, explained: “We don’t all speak French, and not all the French speak English, but that doesn’t matter as smiles and laughter make the bridges. Earlier this year we visited Tourcoing, as we do every other year and once again Les Amis de Rochdale did us proud with a lovely itinerary; sometimes meeting as a whole group such as the big day trip and other times just with our host families. It is always a great experience. “Welcomed into the heart of our host families, members enjoyed outings and gatherings. The French love good food and ensured we had time to appreciate the French culture and cuisine with great meals, good wine (and beer). We also had the pleasure of exploring lovely architecture and experienced wonderful ambience during trips into Lille, Roubaix, Bruges, to name a few. We had plenty of time for sightseeing, boat rides, rambles, boules games, shopping, BBQs and generally relaxing with a glass or two in the sun.” Here in Rochdale, Friends of Tourcoing have a social programme which raises funds to help finance the trips and visits and are compiling their 2020 programme of events which will include Hosting Les Amis de Rochdale in April. Kathryn commented: “We aim to give our French friends a wonderful visit starting with a very special Rochdale welcome reception from Dippy the Dinosaur, have a great day out at the Lakes and a St George themed dinner at our splendid gothic Town Hall, plus there will be lots of other good things going on during the days and evenings.” The group have regular members’ meetings throughout the year and welcome new members and new ideas. As a new member you could take part in the entertainment activities next year and opt to host a French family, couple or individual but only if you wish to. WENDY'S WOOFERS CALENDAR 2020 Wendy's Woofers charity was founded by Rochdale businesswoman Wendy Etheridge after she adopted her dog, Bobbie, from Romania’s Speranta's Shelter. Bobbie was found on the streets of Romania only a few weeks old and in desperate need of help. Without the work of the rescuers at the shelter, Bobbie would have surely perished. Bobbie's plight and rescue became Wendy’s motivation and she set up the charity, determined to find loving homes for as many dogs as she possibly could. ROCHDALE MENSWEAR STORE CELEBRATES 1ST BIRTHDAY Independent Rochdale clothing store Buckley Menswear, on South Parade, are celebrating their first successful - and eventful - year in business. Owner, Phil Buckley commented: “It’s been a great but emotional first year of trading with a great response to the shop and what we are doing, but also the drama of our lower retail floor flooding twice!! No real damage done, just the stress but we soldiered on and are now fully stocked and waiting to see what Christmas brings. It’s going to be a busy year in town with the new Riverside development opening and we should all profit from the extra footfall that will bring. We have some fantastic menswear in-store and we always try our best to help everyone.”

KNOW YOUR SCORE: PROSTATE CANCER TESTING DAY Rochdale AFC are pleased to announce that they will be holding another Prostate Cancer Testing Day in the New Year, in conjunction with the Barry Kilby Prostate Cancer Appeal (BKPCA). The event will be held prior to Dale’s Sky Bet League One game against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday 11th January, from 11.30am-2.30pm in the RAFC Study Centre, Crown Oil Arena. Last year they were the first club in the Greater Manchester area to hold such an event. Over 250 men were tested on the day, with 10% of those tested having a PSA score of 2.9 or more, meaning they were advised to consult their doctor. The club are encouraging all men to return for their 12-month test, along with those who have not had the test yet, to know your score. Those being tested will be asked for a donation of £5-£10 on the day to go towards the cost of the test, which is £25. The rest of the money has been funded through BKPCA and through the auction of Luke Matheson’s match worn signed shirt from Dale’s Carabao Cup tie against Manchester United. Bolton manager and former Dale boss Keith Hill will be amongst those to be tested for his 12-month check-up on the day.

The stylish store was named as a finalist for the prestigious 'Best New Retailer' Drapers Independent Award earlier this year. Buckley Menswear is located in one of the most iconic buildings in town, boasting two floors filled with quality menswear.

HELP CREATE MORE SMILES THIS CHRISTMAS Rochdale Borough Council are seeking donations to this year’s Christmas Toy Appeal, which helps make sure local children living in poverty have presents to open on December 25. The annual appeal organised by the council’s staff-run ‘Giving Back’ charity for the past five years, asks local residents and staff to buy one extra present – a new, unwrapped gift suitable for a child between 0-16 years-old - and leave it at a local library or other collection point by Friday 13 December. Council staff, who distributed over 2,000 toys last year, will then make sure they reach the borough’s less fortunate children in time for Christmas Day. Since 2015 the appeal has provided much needed festive cheer for thousands of children and teenagers. Toys can be dropped off at any library in the borough. There are also collection points at Tesco Rochdale, Heywood Civic Centre, Bowlee Sports Centre, Littleborough Sports Centre, Middleton Arena and Touchstones Museum. Gifts for 0-16 year-olds are all welcome, but especially presents for teenagers that were low in number last year. Giving Back Charity Member Helen Walton helping sort the gifts last year, when over 2,000 were donated and delivered.

ROCHDALE FOOD BANK MARKS 7TH ANNIVERSARY Rochdale Foodbank, on South Parade in the town centre, first opened its doors in early November 2012 so it recently marked its seventh anniversary. However, as Emma Revie, national Chief Executive of the Trussell Trust to which the foodbank is affiliated, put it in a message to the Rochdale volunteers: “While birthdays are usually a celebration it’s not right that anyone in the UK should need to use a foodbank”. Nevertheless, there is much to celebrate about the foodbank’s seven years of existence. It was initially founded and run by Iain and Margaret Wight, and when they decided to “retire” from this responsibility the 100 or so unpaid volunteers shared out the many tasks involved. The overall responsibility for the foodbank now lies with 10 Trustees, including 6 “Working Trustees” who are also volunteers. John Rowe, Publicity Coordinator for the foodbank says “There is a widespread belief that anyone can just walk in and

request help but this is far from the truth. Those in need have first to obtain a voucher from one of the 120 or so Agencies who are linked to us and bring that voucher into the South Parade store. Agencies include churches, some schools and many charities.”

and benefit cuts or sanctions, and there is no doubt that nationally issues such as unemployment, insecure and low paid jobs, homelessness, high costs and shortages of rental homes, mental health issues and breakdowns in relationships have all played a part in the growth in food poverty.”

Even then, as food parcels are intended to be for emergency situations, individual clients can only claim up to 3 in any 6 month period, each parcel containing enough food to last a minimum of 3 days. Volunteers at the foodbank always ensure that clients are greeted in a warm, friendly and non-judgemental way, something which is clearly appreciated by them.

The need for the foodbank in Rochdale seems to increase year on year. In the 4 months from June to September inclusive clients brought in 1420 vouchers, an increase of 14.6% over the same months in 2018. During that period an amazing 19869 kilos of food were donated by the local community, while 19612 kilos were given to clients in food parcels. In this way 1743 adults and 786 children were helped.

On his recent visit to South Parade, Rochdale MP Tony Lloyd told volunteers “I frequently meet with clients of the foodbank who tell me how grateful they are for the vital help they have received”. John Rowe added “The main reasons clients come to us are to do with low pay

Volunteers at the Rochdale Foodbank are divided into five teams, each responsible for a different day of the week, which enables the foodbank to be open 5 days a week from 11.00am until 12.45pm, only closing for bank holidays. Dave Hill, part of the Monday team, spoke for many of the volunteers when he said “I have made many friends through volunteering at the foodbank, and I really feel that since retiring I have been able to put something back into the local community”. While the people of Rochdale have been incredibly generous in their donations, there is always a need for more. Further details, including details on how to donate and/or volunteer can be found on the website at www.rochdale.foodbank.org.uk
