Razorlight rock Rochdale as festival delivers feel good factor Over 11,000 people packed into Rochdale town centre for a feast of live music, food and family entertainment at the tenth Rochdale Feel Good Festival. The town centre was filled with an array of entertainment for the Rochdale Borough Council organised summer event, headlined by indie rock band Razorlight. Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, community and culture said: “To celebrate the festival’s tenth birthday we promised something very special and I think that was what we did. It has been superb. The festival certainly delivered the feel good factor with great live
music, amazing food and some really imaginative family entertainment… I have never seen the town centre as busy, Rochdale has a lot to be proud of and over the last decade we have created a nationally recognised event that is the envy of many towns.” On the Saturday the main stage was opened in colourful style with a mesmerising set from the Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band. They were followed by Manchester band Honeyfeet, Rochdale singer/songwriter Kirk McElhinney, The Karpets, Battle of the Bands winners The Recreation, funk pop outfit The Bright Black, indie pop act Delphina Kings, RedFaces and Baked A La Ska.
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Headliners Razorlight followed, billed as the biggest band ever to play the festival. They enjoyed a phenomenal reception from around eight thousand festival goers. The band, fronted by Johnny Borrell kicked off a stunning set with ‘In the Morning,’ and followed up with all their best known hits. Leaving the stage after around an hour and with the crowd screaming for more they returned for an encore, ending a magnificent performance with their global hit ‘America’. The festival food and drink village was very busy throughout with over 20 traders selling delicious dishes, street food and much more.

DEBBIE & POPPY RUSH Style caught up with mother and daughter soap star duo Debbie and Poppy Rush who have launched their own performing arts school at Bamford Academy, in Rochdale. Debbie, who has played Anna Windass in Coronation Street since 2008, and Poppy, who recently starred as Sophie Dodd in Eastenders, are enjoying sharing their expertise with local children and young people at the venture. Poppy, who lives in Heywood, is best known for playing the best friend of troubled Stacey Slater’s secret brother, Kyle. She has previously appeared in Emmerdale and rose to fame as a teenager in Grange Hill. The Rush family is something of a Heywood celebrity story, with Poppy’s younger brother, Will, starring in shows such as Waterloo Road and Shameless, as well as appearing on X Factor. 4
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Style: Have you ever acted together before? Debbie & Poppy: Unfortunately not, but we would love to one day! Poppy, would you like to join your mum on the cobbles? Yes, I would love to be a Windass and play a character alongside my mum. Debbie, one of the major storylines you’ve had in the past year was when Anna caught fire and you were actually set on fire as part of the stunt - what was that like to film? Yes I was actually set on fire. I felt very safe though as I had a big team of people looking after me. It was exciting to do my own stunt. Poppy, what was it like watching those harrowing scenes? It was scary to see because she really did the whole stunt. I went to the cobbles that day to watch and I was so proud how brave she was. We loved seeing you on Eastenders, what else would you love to work on in future? I love comedy so would love to do more of that. I’ve been lucky enough to work on Reece Shearsmith’s cult dark BBC comedy Inside No 9, family sit-com Jinx, Sky Living comedy Love Matters and comedy drama Mount Pleasant.
What’s your top wedding planning tip? My top wedding tip is to relax and enjoy every minute. Everyone tells me it goes too fast and they were right. And the top Mother of the Bride tip? My top Mother of the Bride tip is to take all the pressure off the bride! You two seem like the best of friends? We really are best friends. Super close. Why did you decide to set up the performing arts school? We decided to open the school to pass on our knowledge of the industry knowledge and pass on our love of the arts.
The Rush Performing Arts School is open to students aged between three and 16. For more information, email info@rushperformingarts.co.uk or call 07531 342244.
How is it going so far? It’s going really well. We teach acting, singing and dancing. We have just done our first summer show which was amazing and we are so proud of all of the students. You recently got married Poppy, how did the wedding go? The wedding was like a fairy tale. We loved every minute.
What advice would you give to aspiring actors? Always have self belief and never give up. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

CORONATION STREET LEGEND TO BE GIVEN FREEDOM OF THE BOROUGH
The nation’s favourite TV pint puller - Coronation Street legend Julie Goodyear MBE is to be given the freedom of the borough of Rochdale by the council. Miss Goodyear – who appeared in Britain’s most famous and best-loved soap for over 25 years – is a long-time resident of the borough and is being given the honour in recognition of her contribution to the arts and entertainment. The actor, known to millions of fans as Bet Lynch/Gilroy and central to many of the soap’s best-known storylines, will be presented with the borough’s highest civic accolade at a special meeting later this year. The Rovers Return landlady joins actor, singer and comedian Gracie Fields; former Heywood and Royton MP and cabinet minister Lord Joel Barnett; Rochdale AFC, and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers as recipients of the freedom of the borough of Rochdale. As a lifelong resident of Heywood Miss Goodyear MBE said she was delighted to accept the honour: “I 6
am honoured, delighted and thrilled to accept this award from Rochdale Borough Council. I was born in Heywood and lived here all my life and never wanted to leave and live anywhere else so this is a very special award from the council. Rochdale is one of the best-known towns in the country and some very famous people have come from here so it will be truly wonderful to be given this honour.” Councillor Richard Farnell, the leader of Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Coronation Street has always enjoyed a special place in the heart of the nation and many of us grew up watching Julie pulling pints behind the bar of the Rovers Return. She is the world’s most famous barmaid who eventually became the second and most iconic landlady of the Rovers - and one of the most famous faces of British television. “As someone who has spent all of her life in Heywood she is a deserving recipient of the highest honour that this council can bestow. We’re looking forward to welcoming Julie to the town hall where she will be treated like the star that she is.” Heywood councillor Peter Rush, who www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
nominated Miss Goodyear, said: “I have known Julie for many years, including when she lived at the Bay Horse pub with her mother and father. She is a brilliant ambassador to Heywood, instantly recognisable with her long blonde hair and sports cars and always good to have around. The freedom of the borough is an honour that as a proud Heywoodian she well deserves and it was my pleasure to be one of the people that nominated her.”

YOUNG WRITER JADE STUART LAUNCHES DEBUT BOOK
Jade Stuart, from Rochdale, has published her debut book, a collection of poems entitled ‘The Ink In My Scars’. Style caught up with 27-yearold Jade, who works at Hollingworth Academy as a student key worker, to discuss life as a published author… What made you decide to write the book? After working towards writing a book for years, I decided after finishing my degree last July I had a lot more time to be able to give it the attention it needed to pull it all together. Writing a book is something I always wanted to achieve in my life but it needed to be a book true to me. It had to be about mental health and its effects on people. I want to extend a helping hand to others through the power of words. My degree is in counselling and psychotherapy and after working as a counsellor in various situations, I often discovered that people needed to be understood and heard before they could heal. I wanted to access more people to help them identify with the words and find parts of themselves within the pages. 8
What life experiences do the poems cover? Each poem covers something different but common themes throughout the book include mental health related experiences, such as depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, abuse (physical and emotional). As well as the process of healing. Did your own experiences influence any of the poems? Many of the poems are personal to me but my book does also cover my experience of other people’s lives, whether I’ve come across them personally or professionally. Obviously, none of these people are identifiable through the poems. Do you have any poetic influences? Yes many, the industry is full of such talent. Some of the more famously known names include Rupi Kaur, Pierre Alex Jeanty, Tupac Shakur and Warshan Shire whose material has been used in Beyoncé’s latest Lemonade album. However, I would say my biggest influences currently are less known. Such as Joel Francois, Sarah Kay and Naomie LaMorenita. Do you plan on writing any more books? I am currently writing my second book. Again, in the theme of life experience poetry but covering other experiences. I also plan on www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
adding a few animations to my next book so it may take slightly longer as I will be doing all aspects of the book myself. Why was it important to you to write this book? I think it was important for me because I want people to realise they are never alone. Mental health is something that can affect 100% of people, discriminating against no one, leaving people feeling isolated and unable to open up about how things really are for them. I hope when they are reading my book they feel that they can find parts of their identity within the poems and it can help them in the process of healing. What feedback have you had so far? The book is only in the early stages of release, however I am overwhelmed with the feedback I have had from people. I’ve noticed that each person who has bought it has their own favourite poem normally related to their own experiences. The biggest compliment I have had so far is when someone thanked me for laying myself bare and vulnerable to help others heal. They told me how it had left them feeling raw and emotional and they were only halfway through but couldn’t wait to read the rest. ‘The Ink In My Scars’ is available to purchase on Amazon, both in paperback and on Kindle.
ROCHDALE HUSBAND & WIFE PUT PEN TO PAPER
The writing in the Ashworth home became something of a family enterprise when Graham’s wife Dawn decided to join him as an author.
The Story of Jimmy Mouse and of course Tommy Cat
However there will be no rivalry between the couple as Dawn has settled upon writing for children. In her first book, ‘The Story of Jimmy Mouse and of Course Tommy Cat’, a charming tale between two friends, Dawn passes on a story told to her by her father when she was small. Now in paperback and Kindle versions, the story can be enjoyed by all. Two unlikely friends, Jimmy Mouse and Tommy Cat, cause havoc in the
shop Uniquely illustrated by Jim Binnie, the pictures give the book a timeless feel to it. “Some books on the market use internet tools to produce smart illustrations, but to me they are a little sterile. Jim’s artwork is unique and I’m sure it will appeal to every generation.” Dawn explained, before adding, “I wanted to write the book after passing on the story to our grandchildren, Evie & Oliver and I intend to donate my share of any profits to Diabetes UK. Evie was diagnosed with Type 1 last year when aged five and I feel we owe a lot to that particular organisation.”
Dawn L. Ashworth Illustrated by Jim Binnie
2017 also saw husband Graham busy with the release of two new books. ‘Shorts’ a collection of unique short stories and ‘Keel Hauled’ a full length novel. Keel Hauled sees two journalists embark upon an investigation into the life of a 1970’s comedy hero. When very few people turn out to see the actor off at his funeral and following a graveside incident, the investigators Kyle and Helen, delve into the past with astonishing results. All three books mentioned, and Grahams other novels can be found at Amazon UK Books.

Butterfly Rescue by Lilia Ramos, Age 7
Thank you to everyone who entered Style’s Short Story Competition; we loved reading all your creative and imaginative entries. Congratulations to Lilia Ramos, aged 7, from Rochdale, who was chosen as winner of the Junior Short Story category. Rochdale artist Joe Matthews has helped to bring Lilia’s unique short story to life with his fantastic illustrations. We hope you enjoy Lilia’s colourful tale...!
Once in a magical faraway land, there lived six beautiful butterflies. Their home was Whispering Wood. It was a colourful and exciting place to have as a home... The butterflies were called Poppy, Skye, Daisy, Flower, Michael and Joel. They played all day in the wood, laying in the long grass. Poppy and Flower were sisters and lived in a five star luxury home. It was a white cottage with moss growing all around it. The other butterflies lived in white toadstools. Now I need to mention that in this land there also lived a horrendously noisy and grumpy lion called George. George was the King of Whispering Wood and lived in a tall grey tower with his evil assistant Gurinder. Every morning the butterflies met at the skate park where they fluttered around before school began. The first lesson was always Science. “Boring”, sighed Poppy. “Sorry” apologised Flower, “my sister can be a bit annoying at times”. Flower loved Science and liked mixing colours to store in the colour diary and send to the Inking Shop. 10
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
When the butterflies worked hard, the land and their colours started to fade and they had to go the Inking Shop to get their patterns inked back on. Joel wasn’t very good at Science. “Looking for your colour diary eh?” he said sweetly but Flower didn’t trust him. “Yes meanie”, she said bravely even though her voice was hoarse. “Well catch it clever clogs!” he smirked and flung it over Michael’s head. It flew out of the window and then something dreadful happened! It was caught by King George the grumpy lion! He took the book and ran back to his tower. By teatime the butterflies could hardly move. Their patterns had faded and they really needed colour. They would have to go to King George’s tall, grey tower and rescue the colour diary! It took them until midnight but they finally arrived at the tower. King George shouted Gurinder for help when he saw the butterflies. “GET THOSE THINGS OUT OF HERE!” shouted George. “Shoo! Shoo! Oh Bother!” Gurinder huffed and puffed as the butterflies flew past him. By this time, the butterflies colour had almost disappeared and they couldn’t even fly properly. They needed to find the colour diary quickly. But suddenly the window slammed shut and a cage landed on them! “Oh no!” sobbed Daisy. “Don’t worry” shouted Poppy, “we’ll find some colour!”, and, being the smallest butterfly, she squeezed through the cage. Suddenly the grey floor started to turn rainbow... King George had hidden the colour diary in a secret place in the floor. Poppy grabbed the diary and the key to the cage. Quick as a flash she unlocked the cage to set free the other butterflies. King George grabbed the magic colour collector bottle which still had some colour from the diary in it but he tripped and the colour spread everywhere, making the butterflies strong again. “Let’s get to the Inking Shop quick!” said Daisy. And off they flew. And guess what patterns they had inked on their wings when they got there? Beautiful butterfly patterns of course!

CARGO STUDIOS:
CREAM OF THE CROP IN 80’S ROCHDALE In an unassuming alley close to Drake Street once sat the amazing Cargo Studios. Rochdale was perhaps an unlikely place to find a studio which played such an important part in music in the late 1970’s through to the mid 1980’s, playing its part in what was to be known as ‘The Manchester Scene’. I was unaware, like most people I suspect, that whilst we were going about our daily business some very great musicians and record producers were driving up the narrow, cobbled Kenion Street and getting down to the business of recording some great music. With the passing of time some of these people and bands have become icons and legends. Our interest in the history of rock music has grown enormously and little did we know that Rochdale was to become known as ‘RockDale’ and with good reason. Back in the late 1960’s and into the 1970’s Rochdale was hosting some amazing musicians. The Kubi Club in the town centre was 16
a venue for many a 60’s band that many of us will recall, from Little Richard to Rod Stewart. In the 70’s The Champness Hall and the College hosted many a famous band from Rochdale’s own Tractor to Ian Dury, Dusty Springfield, Incredible String Band, Thin Lizzy and many more. The list of bands who used the studio reads like a ‘who’s who’ of rock music. The legendary Joy Division, arguably, lead the list along with their producer, the late Martin Hannett. Add to the mix the designer Peter Savile who was responsible for designing many of Factory record sleeves including Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark who recorded at Cargo. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
The Fall, another huge band who achieved world-wide status with members including Mark E. Smith and Brix, used the studio quite extensively. Set up by ex-Granada television cameraman John Brierley, as a reasonable priced recording facility for bands, it was soon found that the sound it provided
Joy Division and Martin Hannett

The Fall and Grant Showbiz outside Cargo Reg of The Chameleons in Cargo
was ideal and its reputation, and work load, grew as bands of every sphere made their way to its doors. Cargo even makes an appearance in a film ‘24 Hour Party People’ about the life of Tony Wilson’s Factory records and which features many stars including Steve Coogan and Peter Kay. It is no wonder that the studio was awarded a prestigious heritage blue plaque which was unveiled by Peter Hook, John Robb and Andy McClusky (OMD), amongst other stars. The Fall’s guitarist Brix Start Smith recalled, with me, going up its steps to the recording studio over 25 years ago. As she says in her beguiling American accent, “There was some great music that came out of that studio”. The bass player with the same band, Steve Handley, includes
some great memories of Cargo in his book ‘The Big Midweek, Life Inside The Fall’. He and his coauthor, Olivia Piekarski, recently chose Rochdale to launch and talk about the book, complete with signings. Other artists include the Chameleons whose own reputation is the subject of growing interest, many Factory Records bands and also the Velvet Underground’s fabulous Nico. Should you wish to know more and wallow in some great nostalgia of facts and photos of some of rock world’s members who used Cargo then the website is highly recommended, much work having gone into it. It is certainly a labour of love and a reflection of present interest. The site includes a list of the hundreds of bands who used the studio with local bands listed as well as the bigger ‘names’ from all over Britain (and beyond). www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
The studio was eventually sold on to a consortium which was partly owned by Peter Hook and became ‘Suite 16’. Cargo’s reputation was built in those heady post punk years after 1977. Listening to the music recorded there, immediately transports us back to those great days for music and for Rochdale. Paul Brady More information can be found at: www.cargostudios.co.uk

IT’S NOT THE SIZE OF THE PACKAGE BUT WHAT’S INSIDE…
Without wanting to make this page sound like the problem page of Cosmopolitan, the question we raise this issue, is in motoring terms, does size matter? You see gradually over the past twenty years, even cars considered to be ‘small’ like the Fiesta and Corsa for example, have now ballooned to become the same size, if not larger than the Escort and Astra from the mid-eighties. There is also much more variety available out there instead of the choice of just three or five doors, there is a myriad of body shapes and options available. This issue, I dare to suggest what I think are the best, and remember, just like the disclaimer on the best social media accounts, these views are purely my own! A UDI S1 I’ve never made any secret of the fact that I love a hot hatch and the best mix in my eyes is a small car with a ridiculously large engine, and that is basically what the S1 is. Based on the same underpinnings of the Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Fabia, the Audi S1 has a turbo-charged 2.0 litre engine packing 230bhp which is mated to a four-wheel drive transmission making it unique in the hot hatch market.
feel confident that once you turn into a corner the car is going to stick. Around town the ride can feel a bit harsh and my one other criticism would be lack of an option for manual transmission which
Keen drivers will absolutely love the little S1. Audi’s legendary Quattro all-wheel drive system means that sprint off the line feel - brisk is an understatement; 60mph can come in 5.9 seconds in the right conditions. In the corners the S1 feels planted and surefooted and can make even the most nervous of drivers 20

B M W 2 SE RIE S ACTIVE TO U RE R Looking past the awful name, which was no doubt the result of a brain storming session at an expensive blue-sky-thinking media consultancy agency, the Active Tourer fulfils BMWs need for a premium mini-mpv marketplace which was previously only occupied by the Mercedes B Class. As the name ‘Active Tourer’ suggests, the car has been built to not only act as a convenience for the family, but for those in pursuit of the outdoor dream. To that end there are plenty of cubby holes and storage solutions for the endless range of accessories that accompany that lifestyle, as well as a cavernous boot.
It’s not the best car in the world to drive, nor the quickest but if you like the premium feel that BMW manages to permeate through its range and don’t mind the premium price tag that comes along with that then this is the car for you.

of competitors in this genre but Renault discontinued the Clio Sports Tourer some time ago and SEAT are yet to reveal if there will be an estate version of their freshly-launched Ibiza. For once I’m not going to mither on about road holding or performance as let’s face it buyers of cars like this are much more interested in more practical matters. The rear load space is almost tardis-like in its ability to swallow cargo and with the rear seats down there is almost as much space as you might find in one of the Fabia’s larger competitors. Pick of the bunch for economy is the 1.2-litre turbo charged petrol variant which although uses a bit more fuel, is much more capable than the entry level 1.0-litre power plant. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

EXPERT SKIN CLINIC OPENS IN NORDEN The Aesthetic Rooms is a new skin clinic in Norden owned by Zoe Pearson, a registered nurse and independent prescriber. Zoe has brought the feel of a Manchester City Centre clinic to the local area, with an expert team and exceptionally high standards.
The Aesthetic Rooms held their launch night on 31st August which proved a huge success. The night included demos of their treatments, skin analysis with a skin specialist and a chance for locals to have a look around the fantastic new clinic.
ombre, powder, lip blush and liner, lash enhancement liner. All procedures involve an in-depth consultation within a private treatment room to discuss goals and expectations, treatment options and after care.
Zoe has been qualified in aesthetics for ten years offering injectables from many clinics and salons. Treatments include the increasingly popular lip enhancement using dermal fillers to add volume and definition and wrinkle injections with botulinum toxin to diminish fine lines in the frown, forehead and crows feet - lasting 3-6 months it can smooth lines within days.
Skin treatments at The Aesthetic Rooms are carried out by Rebecca Trenholme, Dermaplaning is a brand new exfoliation treatment on the market. Using a surgical blade, this pain free procedure involves scraping dead skin from the surface to reveal a smoother glowing appearance. It removes fine downy hairs without causing thick regrowth. Dermaplaning sessions also includes a hyaluronic acid mask to leave the skin hydrated.
Treatments are not only for women though! A lot of men are having ‘Brotox’ to soften deep set lines and give a more youthful appearance. Following in the footsteps of many male celebrities, this sought after procedure is a firm favourite with the modern day man. Joining Zoe at The Aesthetics Rooms is Sam Wrigley offering semi-permanent make up and microblading. Sam trained with PhiBrows and the renowned Claire Hobson. Permanent make up helps both men and women feel amazing and look fantastic! Areas that can be treated include eyebrows, hair stroke,

TOM MCNEENEY’S COM
The Head Chef of The Oxford Pub, Roc comfort food (noun) : food that is satisfying because it is prepared in a simple or traditional way and reminds you of home, family, or friends Ingredients - serves 3: 6 good quality butchers sausages 2 slices smoked back bacon, chopped 1 medium sized onion, diced 2 garlic cloves, sliced 2 carrots, peeled & roughly diced 2 ribs of celery, roughly chopped 1 tin cherry tomatoes (chopped will do but I tried these the other day & they were wonderful) 1 tin butterbeans Splash of red wine 250g pearl barley 1tbsp tomato puree Good handful, finely grated parmesan or grated hard cheese 800ml chicken stock Salt & pepper Smoked paprika Olive oil Few sprigs of thyme Couple of bay leaves
ROCHDALE RISOTTO Sometimes the best things you come up with happen completely by accident, so much so that you can’t even take credit for them really! What started off as a sausage casserole soon became our very own Lancashire risotto after a bit of a kitchen nightmare. I always add in a little pearl barley to a sausage casserole, I love the stuff - but once, thanks to a split bag, I ended up putting far too much in. I tried to style it out, adding in a few extra bits and it came out perfect! Now we always put in extra and let it drink up all the beautiful stock, we call it Rochdale Risotto and it’s got autumn dinner written all over it!
Method Start by getting yourself your biggest, widest pan because we’re about to have a party in it. Pop it on a medium heat and throw in a little olive oil to get things going. Once that’s plenty warm enough chuck in your bacon and onions, give them a couple of minutes to get the party started. Keep them moving and once the onions start to soften throw in your celery, carrots and garlic giving them a mix as they go in. After five minutes, shift everything in the pan to one side and pop in your sausages where you’ve made a gap, give them a minute or two on each side then give the whole pan a shake and a mix. Add a splash of red wine and let it cook down a little while you strip the thyme off the stems. Then toss in the thyme leaves along with a sprinkle of paprika, your bay leaves, the tin of cherry tomatoes and a good pinch of pepper. Give everything a mix up and pop a lid on for ten minutes. 24
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
After ten minutes take the lid off, turn the heat down, throw in your barley and give it a proper mix together. Leave it for a couple of minutes, then add in half of your stock and the tomato puree, stir the whole thing up and pop the lid on for another twenty minutes. It won’t need much fettling with, just make sure it doesn’t dry out too much and give it a little stir. After twenty minutes add in the rest of your stock, the butterbeans and a sprinkle of your cheese. Stir it all in and again cook down for another fifteen more minutes, letting the barley take on all that stock. After fifteen minutes make sure the barley is as soft as you want it to be and if it is take it off the heat. Leave it to stand for a minute or two then dash in the rest of your cheese, give it a final stir and a few final twists of a pepper grinder. Dish up for you and two other lucky people, this’ll go lovely with a decent bottle of pinot or a good old brew.
MFORT FOOD SPECIAL
chdale, shares his favourite recipes... Ingredients - serves 4:
your tomatoes, tomato puree and stock, mix it up and slam a lid on it.
For the soup: 4 tins chopped tomatoes, decent quality 1 small white onion, roughly diced 2 cloves of garlic, peeled & sliced 200ml vegetable stock 200ml double cream 1 tbsp double concentrate tomato puree 6/8 basil leaves Olive oil Pinch of sugar Pinch of salt & black pepper
Now, get a frying pan on a low heat, butter one side of your slices of bread and place them (two at a time is probably best) butter side down in your pan (once it’s warmed up). Give it a minute or two then take a good handful of your grated cheese and spread it over the open side of your bread in the pan.
For the grilled cheese sandwiches: 8 slices of nice bread, thick sliced Melted butter 300g grated cheese, here I’ve used a mixture of red leicester, mature cheddar & edam. Method First, get yourself a big saucepan on a medium heat with a good glug of olive oil (this isn’t a slimming world special!), give that a moment to heat up then lob in your onion with a pinch of salt & pepper, then give them a little stir. After two minutes, once the onion has started to soften, pop in your garlic and keep it moving for half a minute or so, don’t let your garlic burn. Then, tip in all
While that’s doing it’s thing take the lid off your soup, give it a stir then pop in a pinch of sugar, a little more salt and a good few twists of a pepper grinder. Then, pop in the basil leaves and cream. Now top your sandwiches with two more slices of bread, butter side up and carefully flip them over. Once your soup has come back to a simmer take it off the heat and blend it, check it one last time to see if it needs any more seasoning and then dish it out. By this time your grilled cheese sandwiches are going to be pretty much finished. Lift them out of the pan and pop them onto a chopping board, give them a little squish down so that the cheese oozes out of the side in a truly attractive fashion. Finally, cut them into soldiers, perfect for dunking and prepare to have a new favourite tea for rainy winter nights.
Ingredients - serves 4: For the fruit: 3 tins pitted black cherries in syrup (drain one) 3 tbsp caster sugar 1 tbsp amaretto or kirsch (optional, but come on)
CHERRY BAKEWELL CRUMBLE Crumble is an oldie but a goodie. What could be better? I’ll tell you what, taking that cherry crumble we love and crossing it with a bakewell tart! Fresh out of the oven, this bubbling beauty is going to fill your whole house with smells of cinnamon and warm amaretto, it’s enough to make you look forward to the colder nights, almost.
For the crumble: 160g plain four 60g brown sugar 80g cold butter, cut into small cubes 100g amaretti biscuits, smashed to pieces 50g ground almonds Pinch of cinnamon To top: 100g icing sugar Flaked almonds Cherries Method Start with a large ovenproof dish (the one you’re going to serve your crumble in). Into the bottom of it put your tinned cherries, caster sugar and if you’re using it, a little dash of amaretto or kirsch. Give them a little stir and pop in a hot oven (200ºc) covered for about 25 minutes. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
10 MINUTE TOMATO SOUP WITH GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICHES This is the sort of food that won’t make it to the table. You’ll find yourself sat on the side in the kitchen with a great, steaming mug full of this cowboy tomato soup, dunking deliciously cheesy strips of grilled cheese into it. It’s a match made in heaven and a dream of a tea on a rainy, miserable night.
While this is happening, in a mixing bowl, combine together the flour and butter, rubbing them between your fingertips to make a breadcrumby consistency. Then, stir through your sugar, crunched up biscuits, cinnamon and ground almonds. After 25 minutes has passed, pull your dish out of the oven, carefully - there’s nothing on this earth hotter than fruit & sugar fresh out of an oven! Spread your crumble mix over the top of the fruit, as evenly as you fancy, then pop back in the oven for about 30-35 minutes until the top is a gorgeous golden brown & the fruit is starting to bubble up and out at the edges. I can smell it already. If you can resist the urge to wolf it down right there and then, leave it to cool a little for a few minutes before mixing your icing sugar with a few drops of water then drizzling in a slap dash manner over the top of the crumble. Finish by scattering on a few flaked almonds and some fresh cherries. Serve this up with some warm custard or, if you really want a treat, a big scoop of honeycomb ice cream. Good grief, you’re going to love this one! 25

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK! The Empire Club in Packer Street has had a number of identities over the last hundred or so years. It has been a music hall, a cinema, a bingo hall, a night club and now Rochdale’s premier live music venue. The building is locally listed (Grade 1) as outlined in the council’s Unitary Development Plan; it is recognised for its “cultural heritage, individual merit and as a strong example of its type”. This fine building has five bays, the outer ones with a pinnacle roof; the central bay is the highest and has a pediment carrying the Empire Hall inscription. It is a pity that the overgrown trees obscure the impressive architecture of this whole row of buildings, from Yates up to the Flying Horse Hotel. This was particularly apparent during the recent Feel Good Festival where all four venues along Packer Street were masked by the vegetation. Photographs from the past are more impressive - with smaller trees and a far better view of each building. Last year Paul Whitham, a veteran of Rochdale clubland, reopened the building as The Empire Club. Supported by his management team of Alan Ford and Christopher Webster, Paul has already made a huge positive impact on the night time economy in Rochdale. But he is doing more than merely restoring the building’s original name. 28
Recently I met up with Paul one afternoon and he kindly showed me around this historic building. During my tour of the Empire, I was struck by the amount of activity and improvements within. Paul took me upstairs to the circle of the former cinema, showing me the unusual balcony that looks out onto the Town Hall Square.
ceiling in the former stalls area, move the stage to its original position and open up the circle by removing the wall that currently closes it off from the rest of the club. Paul is clearly inspired by the trend to restore and revive historic cinema buildings in the region such as Stockport Plaza and Hebden Bridge Picture House.
I popped back a couple of weeks later and there was, as Paul had promised, a new larger stage. But that is not all; like Victor Kiam who famously liked Remington shavers so much that he “bought the company”, Paul is now purchasing the building, rather than being its tenant.
The Empire was opened in 1903 as a music hall, but soon became Pringles Picture Palace, mixing films and live performances. There was an orchestra pit so that music could be played along
Paul outlined his vision for the the Empire to me. He intends to re-clad the rear of the building to improve its rather dull aspect. Inside, Paul is determined to restore the building to its former glory. He is planning to raise the www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
to the silent films and accompany the performers. In the final week of June 1911 there was a twice nightly show with a packed bill that included film of King George V’s coronation and an appearance by a 13 year old Gracie Stansfield (I wonder what happened to her?!). The venue reopened as the Empire De Luxe Cinema in 1930 with a new curved balcony to replace the original horseshoe shaped one. There were 1150 seats. The local paper described in great detail the new furnishings and renovations, not least the introduction of two “huge loud speaker horns” for the new “talkies” that were replacing silent films. This was the golden age of cinema in Britain, long before the threat of television. Rochdale had no less than nine cinemas in the 1930’s, joined by a tenth, the Regal ( now the Regal Moon) in 1938. There were also cinemas in Heywood, Littleborough, Middleton and Milnrow, hard though this may be to believe. The last ever film to be screened was Drops Of Blood, before the cinema became the Empire Bingo Club. Bingo sessions had started in the afternoons
in August 1963 and, a month later, had replaced films in the evenings, too. This event was not reported in the local paper, perhaps reflecting the national decline in movie going. The bingo club lasted for over 30 years. Whatever one’s view of bingo halls, their inception ensured that many cinemas escaped demolition. In the 1990’s the night club years began (remember Dali’s Bar?), and this brings us up to last year. I attended a gig at the Empire this summer to see a UB40 tribute band. I was immediately impressed with the friendly welcome that my friends and I received. There was none of that underlying menace that puts off so many older people going out at night in a town. By mid-evening the Empire was filling up with a good mix of ages and types of people. The security staff were discreet and effective, ensuring a safe and pleasant environment. The band went down very well with everyone singing along to the many classics made famous by the Campbell brothers. In true Glastonbury style, the audience seemed to know the words to every song!
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
In the club DJ Jon Da Fox is an irrepressible presence; spinning the discs; warming up the crowd; roving the venue with his camera taking photos and putting live footage straight onto Facebook. Who said that men couldn’t multi-task? The club is open Thursday to Sunday every week with live music on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Paul wants to expand and vary the events at the Empire and the future of the venue is assured and exciting. Could I conclude with a polite message to our local council; could we have some tree surgeons in Packer Street? The trees are spoiling the Empire Club’s incredible frontage and their flower displays would welcome some more sunlight!

enjoying the sunshine at Rochdale Riding Club. Families were entertained with Punch & Judy, fairground, donkey
rides, birds of prey, farm animals, crafts and stalls. Roll on
June 2017 when it’s going to be bigger and better! Watc this space. In July, the Moonlit Sprint or Stroll once again saw
supporters galore donning Springy the Frog onesies to h skip or jump the 10km route starting from Rochdale’s Rugby Union Club. The efforts of this green brigade of invertebrates totalled a bouncing £6000! On one balmy evening in July, the Hospice grounds were transformed to host the annual

The one thing Springhill Hospice fundraisers have in common is the desire to give something back. In the case of Chantelle Thornton, and her family and friends, they not only wanted to say ‘thank you’ but also wanted to help ensure that Springhill’s doctors and nurses could continue their care for others.
Sunday 15th October 10am - 5pm ART & CRAFT FAIR The Coach House, Lodge Street Demonstrations and hand made arts and crafts for sale. Kooky textiles, craft kits, workshops and a whole heap of vintage living. Admission - FREE
Last year, the hospice cared for Chantelle’s husband, Tom Thornton, who tragically lost his life to cancer just weeks after the birth of their son Maxwell. One year on and Chantelle, along with ‘Team Tom’, have pledged their support to
Springhill Hospice. Team Tom, a group mad of over 30 supporters, chose to run Manchester’s 10k, raising both money and awareness for the Hospice, wearing specially made t-shirts bearing the smiling face of Rochdale Rugby Union player, Tom.
Speaking about their fundraising efforts Chantelle said, “Team Tom has collectively raised £3,431 so far and our total is still risin is really important to us all to know that someone else will receive the same extra sp care that Tom was able to receive.”

A SOLUTION TO INGROWN TOENAILS An ingrowing toenail is a very painful condition which can be caused by an injury, incorrect cutting of the toenail or even family genes. If left untreated the toe can become inflamed, infected and require ongoing courses of antibiotics. Depending on the condition of the toenail it can be removed partially or totally with the use of a local anaesthetic. Phenol is then applied to the nail bed to prevent the regrowth of the nail in that area, as the same problem can quickly re-occur if the toenail is allowed to grow back again. You will be booked back in two days later so we can check on your progress, with a final progress check a further week on.

THE ULTIMATE HALLOWEEN COSTUME GUIDE It can be argued that autumn is the best season for many reasons. Cooler temperatures mean that hot chocolate is back on the menu, as are cosy knits and chunky socks, and shopping for new boots and coats (as if we needed an excuse for a trip into town). All the best shows start creeping back on our TV screens, meaning that curling up on the sofa and watching twelve hours straight of the latest American crime series is not unreasonable behaviour, because it’s more than likely raining and dark by 8.30pm. Salad is out and stews, pies and puddings are in, because of course you don’t need to worry about that ‘summer body’ until next year. And then the official, undisputed best holiday of the year is upon us - Halloween. Closely followed by the second best, Bonfire Night, because, you know, fireworks. This season, we aim to give you some Halloween costume inspiration, from the traditional to the weird to the downright hilarious...
OLD SCHOOL Halloween is all about the spooky, right? There’s a reason traditional costumes like witches, devils, zombies, ghosts, and vampires are perenially popular for Halloween, because they’re the classics. Dracula can be as scary or as kitschy as you want him to be, and Frankenstein’s monster always looks the part, especially if you’re generous with the green facepaint and fake stitch effects. There’s always tons of witch and devil accessories on the high street and in the supermarkets to be bought, so opting for a cat or a spider is kind of a safe option, but you’ll definitely look the part while chanelling the true spirit of Halloween.

CELEBRITY There are literally thousands of instantly recognisable celebrity dress-ups you could choose from. We’re predicting that Donald Trump will be a particularly popular choice this Halloween, with the tango-toned President and his enigmatic hairdo adding equal doses of comedy and terror to your Halloween outfit. You could also opt for a legendary, iconic singer, like Amy Winehouse, who is super-easy to morph into with the help of a black wig, lashings of black eyeliner and some random tattoos placed about your anatomy, real or otherwise. David Bowie is another singing deity whose look is unique, but perhaps needing a little more effort for the necessary copious amounts of hairspray, facepaint and accompanying skintight glittery catsuit. Or if you want to keep it simple, go as man of the moment Ed Sheeran, and wear your everyday clothes with a very dishevelled ginger wig. Simple! TV CHARACTERS - Halloween is the perfect time to dress up as someone you’re really nothing like in real life, so why not go as your favourite TV hero (or villain)? You could go full warrior and assemble yourself a Ragnar Lothbrok Viking costume, complete with furry waistcoat, gigantic axe and a murderous attitude, or seek out a dragon-taming medieval style dress and long blonde wig and go as Game of Thrones’ Daenerys. Or keep it simple with a lightning bolt shaped scar, black cloak and wand and transfigure yourself into the ‘Boy
ROYALTY While the famous kings and queens of past may require a little more time, effort and expense to transform into, who could look more regal than Cleopatra with her severely stylish black bob and golden drapings? Or Henry the Eighth, the original tyrant and womaniser, wearing his feathered cap and silky breeches? Or you could keep it up to date and don a matching two piece and massive hat with a silver wig in honour of our reigning Queen Lizzy. Either way, you get to wear a crown, which is obviously a winner.
Who Lived’ Harry Potter.
HIPSTER HALLOWEEN - If you want to something a little more quirky and offbeat, you may have to get a bit more creative and go homemade. Green paint, cardboard and lots of PVA glue could transform you into fruit of the moment, and ultimate hipster food, the avocado. Or a plain white tshirt and pants can become so much more with a set of fabric pens - like a human Twister board! Simple but effective. Other random ironic costume ideas include Whoopee Cushion (I’m sure there’s a tutorial online on how to create this!), so what are you waiting for....!

ROCHDALE RSPCA NEWS & EVENTS Exciting new developments Dogs are very popular companions for many people and we estimate that countrywide there are now over 9 million dogs. In Rochdale we are pleased to be able to say that in partnership with Rochdale Council we have developed a large fully enclosed grassed dog exercise area adjacent to the Rochdale Animal Centre (near Aldi on High Street). We hope to offer dog training and agility classes, together with a secure exercise area for our rescue dogs. We will be holding an Open Day soon so watch out for the announcement and please come along to help us celebrate.
van we use to service our 11 charity shops has reached ‘the end of the road’ and we desperately need to replace it. We have been trying to keep our old van on the road for some time, but we now need to replace it. It is mainly used to transfer stock, deliver and pick up furniture and goods for our charity shops but also to pick up hay/straw and collect donated food for the Animal Centre. After an appeal on Facebook we would like to thank Carter, Collins & Myer, Rochdale for the loan of a van (pictured below) for two weeks and RCD Leaflets, Rochdale for the loan of a van for a further two weeks. We have set up a Just Giving page to raise £5,000 for a new van, can you help?
We continue to take in abused and abandoned animals from dangerous situations. Can you help support us so we can continue to do this important work?
Heywood 1940s weekend – Our Heywood shop (pictured above) won the Best Window Display. Staff members Chris, Jamie & Sam plus volunteer Leah helped on the day. Littleborough Rushbearing - The Littleborough shop joined in this popular traditional event. Gordon Riggs Animal Weekend – Staff and volunteers took along their rescued pets including dogs Gracie and Bobby pictured below.
Crumpet is one of the lucky ones - he was rescued by council workmen from a rubbish heap and brought to the centre. He is a lively and very loving kitten despite his experiences and will shortly be up for adoption.
Sponsor a Pod The Animal Centre is a rehoming centre and our cat pods can be used many times throughout the year. To support our work we have launched our Sponsor a Pod scheme. It will help us to continue to give the most abused cats, dogs and other animals in society the care they deserve during their stay with us at Rochdale before being adopted. One year sponsorships of varying amounts are available and you’ll receive benefits too. Details are on our website. Sponsor a pod in the knowledge that you or your company are helping the animals in our care that deserve a second chance in life. Please check our website for details: www.rspca-rochdale.org.uk.
Can you help us get back on the road? Please help! In addition to the RSPCA vans driven by our Inspectors you will see the Rochdale Animal Centre van driving about in our branch area. The 42

Autumn Beauty Tips A FRESH FACED COMPLEXION Beauty this season starts with a freshfaced complexion. It’s all about the perfect even skin tone and the no-make up, make up look. As we all know great make up starts with great skincare. It’s really important that we look after our skin and don’t take for granted that how good it looks today is the way it will stay. Our skin needs love, care and attention; it needs nourishment hydration and protection. A good skin care routine starts with a cleanse and tone; whether you prefer a foam wash, a micellar water, a cleansing milk and toner or an all in one product it doesn’t matter, as long as you are cleansing the skin to remove daily impurities and toning to rebalance the skins natural PH balance. If you have ever wondered how that lady in your office has the perfect glowing complexion the secret is a serum and cream! Serums are water-like fluids filled with powerful ingredients and rich in vitamins and antioxidants that will soak into the skin and transform the hydration levels of your skin to plump and restore your skins texture and elasticity.
REJUVENATED SKIN Perfect collagen induced skin can now be achieved through micro needling and there’s no better season to try it. Cooler weather and less sun exposure is a great time to try the Dermapen; a micro needling treatment that rejuvenates the skin, eradicates lines and wrinkles, and disperses melanin and pigmentation leaving a clearer complexion. It also calms rosacea and smooths the contours of scarring including acne scarring. PERFECT NAILS The trend this season is rich deep colours on the nails in a high gloss shine. The best way to achieve this look is with a gel polish; I would recommend Gelish for high gloss shine and long lasting polish that doesn’t chip or smudge for 2 weeks. Why not try rich molton chocolates, deep purples, pretty nudes or even a dusky pink with hues which complement the autumn wardrobe. Emma Fitton / The Retreat
ULTIMATE LASHES Luscious lashes are on trend this autumn. The more natural the better. There are several methods of enhancing the lashes such as LVL LASHES, which is a great natural treatment for lashes, where the lashes are permed vertically and completely lifted, then tinted in rich black for optimal results and definition. This treatment takes 45 minutes and the results can last up to 6 weeks. If lash enhancements aren’t for you and you are a natural beauty then a really super volumising mascara can create lift and volume. GLOWING TAN As we head into the cooler autumn months it is still nice to keep the glow of summer on our skin. Whether you have been on a summer holiday and have a deep tan or have picked up a sun kissed glow from gardening or festivals, it’s great to maintain that colour as we head towards the coming season. To maintain your tan you need to keep the skin moisturised to prevent flaking and peeling. I would recommend a tan booster moisturiser with a hint of colour to keep your skin hydrated and nourished. For any additional information on treatments or products mentioned in this article please contact The Retreat where our friendly team will assist you. Tel: 01706 868 898. 44

PATRICK LEYTON
Hopwood Hall’s secret crime novelist Did you know that a member of the local Hopwood family was a writer of crime fiction? The history of this family is well documented, but there is something of a mystery about one of their members. Brenda Cecilia Hopwood (1878-1959) was the second child of Edward and Mary Hopwood. Cecilia (as she was known) wrote no less than 20 novels, but used the male pseudonym of Patrick Leyton. The plot thickens! The Hopwood family lived, appropriately, at their ancestral seat of Hopwood Hall which is situated behind the modern college buildings in Middleton. The family also had a London house near Berkeley Square. Cecilia’s father, Colonel Edward Hopwood was a great sportsman and spent much of his time shooting in Europe and Africa. He lived to the grand age of 97. Cecilia was born in London and christened at St Leonard’s Church in Middleton. The 1881 census shows her staying at Hopwood Cottage (now Manchester Golf Club), but Cecilia grew up at the main hall. In 1896 Cecilia was one of eight bridesmaids at the wedding of her elder sister Judith to William von Schroder. This society wedding was also held at the parish church in Middleton and widely reported in the press. Hundreds of locals lined the streets and schoolchildren strewed flowers along the path as the bridal pair left the church. By 1911 Cecilia had moved to the town of Toddington in Bedfordshire. She stayed in this area for the rest of her life. It seemed that she shared the ownership of a house with her actress friend, Isabel Morris. Both women named each other as trustee and executor in their respective wills.
46
Cecilia’s two younger brothers, ‘Byng’ and Robert, were both sadly killed in action in the First World War. In 1923 the family moved out of Hopwood Hall, having auctioned off much of the fine Elizabethan and Jacobean furniture. It failed to attract a buyer. In 1925 Cecilia’s first novel, The Man Who Knew, was published under the name of Patrick Leyton. It was not unusual for women novelists to use male pen names and many crime writers wrote - and still write - novels under different names. Most of Patrick Leyton’s books were published by Herbert Jenkins who often worked with new authors. The company saw the value of eye-catching front covers and advertisements. Leyton’s novels have evocative names such as The Inevitable Crime, By Foul Means and Silent Death. I am no authority on crime fiction, but a quick read of The Man Who Knew shows it to be an acceptable example of this enduringly popular genre. Around this time Cecilia converted to Catholicism and became a patron of the church. The 1939 census has Cecilia living at another house in Toddington where she had established a Mass centre in her house, served by priests from nearby Dunstable. Much later on, the stables at Cecilia’s house were converted into a small chapel. This place of worship still exists as St Elizabeth of Hungary and has regular Sunday services. The Lancashire Cotton Corporation took over Hopwood Hall during the Second World War. Later it was sold to a trust which started a Catholic teacher training college under the De La Salle Brothers. Cecilia attended the official opening of the college in 1955; she must have
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
been pleased that the family seat was now associated with her beloved Catholic church. I can find no reference to Cecilia’s death in the Rochdale or Middleton newspapers, but the Bedfordshire Times & Standard has the headline ‘Worked For Charities’ reporting on the funeral mass that was held for her. Cecilia is described as an ‘authoress’ who had written ‘several novels’ but there is no mention of either her male pseudonym, nor the type of fiction. A multi-talented individual, Cecilia also raised money for charities by writing and producing pageants and plays in the local community. In her younger days she was a painter of miniatures. Apparently a picture of the Virgin Mary in a Gothic frame at the entrance to St Elizabeth’s was painted by Cecilia.
up and inaccessible. Attempts have been made to sell and restore this Grade 2* listed building. Recently, an American descendant of the Hopwood family called Hopwood DePree visited the area with plans to restore and develop the building. We await progress on that project. In the meantime I hope that more people will now know a little more about this writer of crime fiction. Cecilia must have had a fascinating life; it spanned from Queen Victoria’s reign, through the next four monarchs right up to the accession and coronation of our present queen. Cecilia was born before the first motor car was on the road and died in the space age!
These days the novels of Patrick Leyton are long out of print and hard to obtain. Copies on eBay start at a few pounds and go up to three figure sums! There were hundreds of crime fiction writers in the first half of the last century and Patrick Leyton is one of many during this Golden Age. De La Salle College was sold to Rochdale Council in the early 1990’s and the family’s ancestral seat gave its name to 6894-WIN-STYLE-2016FIN.qxp_Aut-2013 18/11/2016 our thriving further education college. 11:05 The original hall is now disused, boarded

THEATRE REVIEW: Prosenophobia by St Ann’s Players St Ann’s Players are well known for the high standard of productions at their Parish Hall, so all credit to director Lynda Kent for making sense of the implausible plot in their production of Prosenophobia (Stage Fright). The cast really got to grips with writer Bettine Manktelow’s difficult dialogue and the unlikely twist. Sue Howarth and Joanne Frost convincingly played veteran actresses Addie and Millie who are trying to stave off their twilight years. The notoriously bitchy and incestuous world of Provincial theatre is given added reality as they stage a thriller. Addie and Millie’s prickly friendship may be down to both having shared the same suffering ex-husband, impresario Edward Gibb played by impressive Dave Stopford. The audience witnessed some interesting truisms in the perceived bitchy business of showbusiness. The superstitious nature of actors is apparent as Ed causes Millie bad luck by speaking to her reflection in the mirror, rather than directly to her.
The actresses are outrageously rude to each other rather than doing it behind their back. Millie tells Pearl, Jane Jeffery she should use more make-up whilst Addie questions Millie’s bedroom repertoire. Michaela Kitchen adds great support to this strong cast as Judy, the tetchy assistant stage manager and Clive Hartley adds to the mayhem as the Company
Manager Justin James with money troubles. The usual quality set complemented Lynda Kent’s production and the audience were thrilled by everyone in her strong cast. Colin Meredith

GOLD & SILVER ROADSHOW Jewellery and Coin Roadshow
WHAT DO YOU HAVE WAITING TO BE DISCOVERED
A very lucky couple called at one of our recent roadshow events with a couple of old gold chains and a silver charm bracelet and a bag of old silver British coins. We paid them over £1600.00 just for the coins alone . They turned out to be pre 1947 silver coins that were normal currency a few years ago and are now highly collected. We asked them for their permission to pass on this story to help other people realise what they may be sitting on and they were only too pleased to allow us to let everyone know that they might be sitting on a goldmine and not even know it! Like most people, who can only dream of winning the pools or the lottery, a lot of normal households have a hidden treasure of old gold jewellery, silver jewellery, teapots, trophies, trays and old objets d’art. Why not get a free valuation from our expert at our roadshow; at THE NORTON GRANGE HOTEL, MANCHESTER ROAD, CASTLETON, M24 2RB . With free carparking and WiFi. There is no queing and our expert will give you a one on one appraisal of the value of your treasured possessions in a private area, where there are no prying eyes, watching the process evolve. If you like the valuation our expert will make you the same offer in cash which you can accept or decline at no cost to yourself. The whole process of Valuation is free of charge and very private, so you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain.
Many people are totally unaware of the value of unusual and old items that they own and are just hidden away in drawers around the house. Dealers are now paying record high prices for old jewellery and gold and silver objects and collectables. Most unusual gold and silver items are no longer fashionable but there are still collectors who we deal with that will pay record high prices for your old gold and silver jewellery, and items. COMMUNITY NEWS NSPCC GOLF DAY
BRIGHT FUTURE FOR CASTLETON BATHS A local businessman who took the plunge and splashed out to save Castleton Swimming Pool has been hailed. Rochdale Borough Council teamed up with entrepreneur Nick Crewe to set up a community asset transfer and save the popular pool from closure. Local councillors, service users and the new community interest management team, which will operate and maintain the baths, came together to officially re-open the 100 year old baths.
A group of four amateur golfers from Sheffield based Cure Roofing Ltd beat off competition from ten other teams to emerge victorious at the 9th annual NSPCC Golf Day. Held at the picturesque Whittaker Club on Blackstone Edge, the teams enjoyed a competitive day of golf raising £2300 for the charity in the process, this took the combined total to over £20,000 since the event first teed off back in 2009. Since an eleventh-hour rescue package was secured, a group of staff from Crewe Industrial have been working round the clock to breathe new life into the pool, which is mainly used by a number of swimming clubs and schools.
This year’s competitors attracted entrants from across the borough and beyond and was sponsored by Kerf Developments Ltd. The Littleborough branch of the NSPCC would like to thank all of those who helped make the day such a success and looks forward to rivalries being renewed across the greens and fairways next year.

SPRINGHILL HOSPICE TO RECORD NEW CHARITY ALBUM In response to recent events which have threatened the peace and unity of our communities, ten choirs ‘with purpose’ from across the UK have announced that they plan to collaborate on a new crowd-funded charity album, which is all about hope in a time of uncertainty, division and conflict.
groups of people continue to come together every night of the week in living rooms, church halls, community centres, churches and school gymnasiums across the land to forge powerful communities of solidarity through music. Our aim is to encapsulate the spirit of these choirs and produce some cracking songs while we are at it!”
STAND TOGETHER is an album of inspiring cover songs by ten singing groups for whom music reaches beyond the everyday to share their personal messages of triumph over adversity, hope over loss, and the power and spirit of community.
“Choirs with Purpose” will also be releasing one epic single that brings together all voices from all ten choirs. To pre-order the album and help make the project a reality visit www.pledgemusic. com/projects/choirswithpurpose
The first three choirs announced to be participating in the project are Britain’s Got Talent 2017 finalists the Missing People Choir, the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir who reached number 1 at Christmas 2015, and the newly formed UK Hospices Choir. They, and the other seven groups, will all record a popular song which is relevant to their cause with a well-known artist. Rochdale’s very own Springhill Hospice will also feature on the album alongside hospices from across the country. Staff and volunteers from Springhill are busy practising their high notes for the upcoming recording with the UK Hospices Choir. The charities have launched a crowd-funding campaign on pledgemusic.com/projects/choirswithpurpose where as well as pre-ordering the album. James Hawkins, producer of STAND TOGETHER said, “Despite the negative news that we seem to wake up to every morning,
HAT TRICK! Three new food and drink businesses say ‘bon appetit’ to Rochdale Businesses’ growing appetite for investing in Rochdale has been cemented with the opening of two new cafes and a bar in recent weeks.
Bar Cuba brings a Latin flavour to the banks of the River Roch, with manager Shaun Murray recently transforming the old Bar 5 unit on South Parade. Shaun, who has almost 20 years’ experience of working as a barman in the borough, is looking to bring back the café culture to this historic part of town.

He said: “At the moment, we’re only open at weekends, but by mid-September our kitchen will be open, so people can drop in for coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week. We really want to get back to what Bar 5 was; a daytime as well as evening venue, but with a Latin feel. We’re going to have an outdoor seating area and serve Cuban sandwiches and sides, as well as playing Latin-style music. “This building is very central and has loads of character, so I was really drawn to it. The fact that the new market will be right across the road and we’re overlooking the river swayed us too. The regeneration and lively events calendar have made a big difference. We were lucky enough to be open when the Feel Good festival took place and we were absolutely packed out.” Up on Union Street, just off Yorkshire Street, Cafe Plume owners Zakir and Mohammed Shafiq also reckon Rochdale is just their cup of tea. Their cafe serves hot drinks, cakes and sandwiches from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and from 10am to 5pm on Saturdays. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Zakir said: “There’s lot of new development going on in Rochdale at the minute, so it’s a great time to set up a new business there.” Mohammed added: “Everything in the cafe is upcycled and re-fashioned, so it’s a unique venue. We’ve also got old records hanging on the wall, so it’s got a real retro feel. It’s great to be adding something new to the town centre, which is getting better all the time.” Rochdale Shawarma in Yorkshire Street has also joined the growing number of eateries, serving Middle Eastern and Italian food.
