welcome... Dear Readers,

Welcome to Style’s summer edition… Rochdalians are, without a doubt, some of the most compassionate folk around, and it has been heartwarming to see how the community has rallied together to support each other following the Manchester terror attack. Our community spirit, as always, is unbeatable and we pay tribute to that in this edition.

A Mandarin duck on Rochdale canal by John Millington

Rochdale loves Manchester OUR MANCHESTER by Ryan Williams

WHY IS THE BEE A SYMBOL OF MANCHESTER?

A grey Tuesday morning, ‘neath Lancastrian skies We wake once again to wipe tears from our eyes Forced to wear robes of weakness and pity As cowards attack the very heart of our city

The worker bee became a symbol of Manchester following the hard work and ‘hive of activity’ during the Industrial Revolution and represents the city’s innovative and enterprising past. The reason being, workers in the textile mills were often compared to bees in their hives and the term ‘busy bee’ remains synonymous with the ideas of industriousness, perseverance, and team work. Bees can be found gracing various surfaces across Manchester from bins, lampposts and bollards to the floor tiles in Manchester Town Hall and in the city’s coat of arms, granted in 1842.

Like always, we’ll comfort and hold one another A Mancunian family of sisters and brothers For a time our strut is reduced to a stagger But make no mistake, we’ll rekindle our swagger We’ll learn how to live with another deep scar If you think you can beat us, you don’t know who we are! We’re Collyhurst, Ancoats, Moston and Sale We’re Oldham and Bury; Ashton; Rochdale We’re Pankhurst and Turing, the Gallagher Brothers We’re Morrissey, Marr and a million others! We’re a city of workers, a city of shirkers A city of tracksuits, and bibles and burkas Vegetarian, Rastafarian, Atheist, Jew 100 Red! 100% Blue!

MANCHESTER by Tom McNeeney

We’re each of us different but never alone In this Cosmopolitopia we get to call ‘home’

Those streets we all know, their ups an’ their downs, It’s a city I know, but we all call it town.

So, come at us again, and again if you must. Time after time we’ll rise from the dust. You’ll never prevail - not against us...

Here tea is a brew, an lunch’s what’s for dinner, Here you don’t get owt for nowt, we do things differently here.

This is Manchester, our Manchester, And the bees still buzz!

We gave the world chemistry, gave industry speed, Here we split the atom, we freed Deirdre Rachid. Now a city so sound, attracts horrors to test her So she brings us together, to make a Greater Manchester. Bad times come to us, an’ take from us, Try & break in us, the things that make us, us. But that won’t work on us, we’re made of sterner stuff, Made of grit & love, makes us kind, makes us tough. An’ them that choose to try and break us, Lose. An’ they always lose. Might be news to the losers, but we’ve known forever, You try & tear us apart, you’ll only bring us together. An’ we’ll all make a stand, stand hand in hand, From our kids, to us mams. An’ we’ll laugh, an’ we’ll love An we’ll sing our own songs, coz they’re better than yours any road. An’ we’ll be arm in arm, our hearts ignited, An’ we’ll all be as one, one city, united. Coz, some might say, it’s a Mancunian Way, An’ that’s the way we’ll stay, Those bees buzz, always.

Rochdale Borough Council has created a floral tribute to the 22 lives lost in the Manchester Arena attack. Sited next to the statue of John Bright in Broadfield Park, the outline of the Manchester bee was planted with a mix of yellow non-stop begonia and crystal palace lobelia.

COMEDIAN ED BYRNE

Stand-up comedian Ed Byrne brings his biggest ever tour to Middleton Arena this year. The master of observational comedy and star of television shows including ‘Dara and Ed’s Road to Mandalay,’ ‘Live at the Apollo,’ and ‘Mock the Week’ will be on stage at the arena on 20 November during his ‘Spoiler Alert’ tour. In the show, Ed will explore the thin line between righteous complaining and brat-like whining and asks, are we right to be fed up, or are we spoiled? Ed commented: “I originally intended to call the show ‘I’ll Millennial You in a Minute’, but my promoter considered the title off-puttingly baffling. That’s my own chainsaw in the photo, by the way.” Recognised as one of the finest observational comics, Ed’s television credits include Mock The Week, Have I Got News For You, The Graham Norton Show, Live At The Apollo, The One Show, Comic Relief Bake Off, The World’s Most Dangerous Roads and, most recently Dara and Ed’s Road to Mandalay on BBC2. He has also developed huge success on the international circuit, performing to capacity audiences in Canada, France, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. Ed Byrne is at Middleton Arena at 8pm on Monday 20 November. Tickets (£24) from www.middletonarena.com, by phoning 0300 303 8633 or from www.seetickets.com.

Style: We’re looking forward to catching you at Middleton Arena for your tour ‘Spoiler Alert’. What can we expect? Ed: You can expect a night of unparalleled hilarity and insightfulness. You can expect to laugh until you cry. You can expect to see a mirror held up to society exposing all our weaknesses and flaws. You can expect whatever you like. What you’ll actually get is a bloke talking about his life and taking every laugh he gets as tacit agreement with whatever point he’s trying to make. Which comedians make you laugh? (previous answer?!) Nobody will ever make you laugh like the people you know best and who know you best. I’m lucky in that most of my closest friends also happen to be professional comedians so that’s a bonus. But I’m a massive fan of US comic, Louie CK. I find his absolute honesty about his failings and shortcomings very refreshing and, to a certain extent, I’ve tried to bring a certain amount of that honesty to my own shows. When did you first realise you could make people laugh? Probably at college. I was involved in running the Student Union so had to make speeches occasionally and I’d jazz them up with the odd gag here and there. What would be a typical working day for you? There’s no such thing as a typical working day for me, but while I’m on tour I’ll wake up when the hotel tell me to get out. Go and have brunch (which is really lunch because I’ve slept through breakfast). Drive to the next destination. Check in to the hotel. Go and sound-check at the venue. Do the gig. Go in search of Indian food. Go to the hotel and have a few drinks. If time permits, the other activities that may be indulged are; shopping, hiking or perhaps visiting a bird sanctuary for a bit of twitching. Rock and, indeed, roll.

Where do you find inspiration for your material? Anywhere and everywhere. Most of the best stuff comes from obsessing over the things I wished I’d said in arguments or confrontations with other people. What has been the highlight of your career so far? Getting to do a West Wing style “walk and talk” with Martin Sheen on the Graham Norton Show. I’m a massive fan of the West Wing so that was a hoot. How has comedy changed since you first started out? The main difference is that the club circuit has shrunk considerably while the touring circuit has expanded. When I was doing clubs in the 90s you could make a handsome living doing up to 5 gigs a night. It’s much more difficult now. People are more likely to go and watch a household name at their nearest Arena than visit their local comedy club.

by now. I enjoy the fact that you can really push yourself and exhaust yourself without engaging in any kind of competition. It’s physical, without really being a sport. If you could choose three dinner guests who would they be? Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney, all of whom have played Batman. Just as we’re getting ready to eat I’d say, “So, what’s with that voice Christian Bale does?”. Ruth Parkinson

Any tips for aspiring comedians? It’s nice if you can make the audience think. It’s great if you can make the audience cheer. Neither means anything unless you can make the audience laugh.

Ed Byrne with his best mate, comedian Dara O’Briain in BBC2’s Dara & Ed’s Road to Mandalay’.

We hear you love exploring the great outdoors – why do you do it? I have absolutely no idea, and I get asked that question a lot so you’d have thought I’d have come up with a decent answer www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

ACTOR TOM VAREY Tameside actor, Tom Varey, first appeared on our television screens as Bert Middleton alongside Maxine Peake and John Simm in BBC1’s BAFTA nominated series The Village. He landed the lead role and made his screen debut in the star-studded TV series before even finishing drama school. He has since appeared in Game of Thrones and Channel 4 police drama, No Offence, before recently joining the cast of Channel 4’s Ackley Bridge, starring as PE Teacher Will Simpson. The popular drama series, based in a fictional Yorkshire mill town, revolves around a new academy school that merges the lives and cultures of a community. Before moving to London to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, the 26-year-old was a well known face on the local amateur stage, performing in productions by Rochdale Musical Theatre Company and Mossley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society. Style caught up with Tom to chat about being back at school, Ace Ventura and baggy trousers... 8

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Style: Your first ever job was the lead in BBC1’s BAFTA nominated The Village how did it feel to be part of such a huge production before you’d even left drama school? Tom: It felt incredibly exciting and incredibly nerve wracking at the same time but once I was up in them hills with all the brilliant cast and crew I started to relax and really enjoy myself. I was very grateful to be given such a brilliant opportunity. The first episode with the hunt where everyone is running about was particularly fun to film.

Are you sporty in real life? I love Manchester United, forever! Yes I’m a big fan of all sorts of sport, football in particular, but even if there’s some very obscure sport on tv I’ll probably end up watching it and getting really into it. Would you like to see The Village back on our screens? Definitely, I loved it and thought it was beautifully written and shot, it’d be great to see what went on in the village further down the line.

Have you had good feedback about the programme? Yes I’ve heard good things, I think it’s fun and there’s a good message of unity and coming together in there as well. I try not to look at reviews and whatnot, but all my friends have been very positive about it which is nice. What has been your favourite scene to film so far? There’s a scene in the karaoke bar where Lorraine Cheshire who plays Lorraine Bird is singing ‘baggy trousers’ - that was a great day, probably the best day of my life, I love Lorraine! And all the stuff we filmed up on the field playing rugby was a good laugh, freezing cold, but good fun.

films, he inspired me massively, I still try to loosely model my hairstyle on Ace Ventura to this day. What has been your favourite role to date? I’ve honestly enjoyed all of them for different reasons, sitting on the fence a bit there I know. But they’re all good for different things. What would be your dream role? Oooh I’ve got loads, R P McMurphy from ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’. Or something from an Arthur Miller or Tennessee Williams play. Not gonna lie, I would absolutely love to play a footballer. Ackley Bridge, Wednesdays Channel 4 at 8pm, catch up on previous episodes on All 4. Ruth Parkinson

Any hints as to what is coming up for your character? Some proper rugby coaching! And maybe an attempt at wooing a lady friend. We hear you popped up in the last series of Game of Thrones? Who did you play? I did yeah, I played Cley Cerwyn, the son of Lord Cerwyn.

You’re currently starring as PE teacher Will Simpson in Channel 4’s Ackley Bridge. How would you describe him? Will Simpson loves sport and likes teaching, maybe he thinks he’s a bit better at it than he actually is, but that’s not to say that he’s particularly bad. In his head he believes he is a bit of a Casanova but sometimes I think he speaks first and thinks later.

Are you a Game of Thrones fan? I must admit, I haven’t seen a lot of it, but I know it’s massive, people really really love it! What inspired you to first become an actor? A number of things really... I was very lucky to have really great, encouraging drama teachers. I’d always enjoyed putting on shows for my family as a kid, dressing up and that. Plus I used to absolutely love Jim Carrey and all his www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

DAN DAN THE MAGIC MAN

A talented young magician from Shaw recently starred in one of the USA’s most popular entertainment shows. Thirteen-year-old Daniel Rhodes, better known as Dan Dan the Magic Man, was invited to Los Angeles to appear on Little Big Shots, a show which sees youngsters show off a variety of talents in front of a live audience.

Dan’s American debut, which saw him perform a selection of magic tricks, had host Steve Harvey spellbound and earned him a standing ovation from the audience. The show is incredibly popular in the States, with the first season attracting more than 13 million viewers and becoming the NBC network’s most-watched show in ten years. Dan and his family flew out to L.A for filming last year. Dan’s mum Lisa added: “He absolutely loved it… He got a standing ovation and it was amazing. Everyone was just in awe of him and the atmosphere was electric”. Photo (left): Dan with America’s Little Big Shot host Steve Harvey

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

The show features a range of performances from children with a range of musical and other talents, as well as youngsters who are prodigies in areas such as anatomy, geography and even Shakespeare. It also showcases kids who have taken the internet by storm with viral videos. Youngsters were invited from all over the world, including the UK, to take part in the second season of the show. Dan has also appeared on the UK version of the show, alongside Dawn French. A YouTube clip of that performance has already racked up more than 40,000 views. Style: How long have you been a magician now? Dan: My love for magic began when I was 6 years old, when I was given a basic magic kit for Christmas. My tricks haven’t stopped since!

Who is your inspiration? Dynamo!! I’m his biggest fan. And Damian O’Brien. How did you get involved with Little Big Shots? Little Big Shots USA saw my YouTube videos and got in touch. I hadn’t heard about it before then - I was asked to do an audition tape and send it over and it went from there. Little Big Shots UK also saw my YouTube videos and invited us to take part in the show.

Dan with 12 year old ventriloquist Darci Lynne

What was it like going to America and meeting Steve Harvey? It was amazing - I was really looked after and felt like a star! Although I only me Steve Harvey for 10 minutes, it was the best 10 minutes of my life! What would you love to do next? I would love to go on the Ellen [Degeneres] talk show and show her my tricks! Did you get to know the other performers on Little Big Shots? Yes, I made loads of friends and they have all done really well. I loved Darci lynne the ventriloquist - she’s just got the golden buzzer on America’s Got Talent! I met And Jaiden Harvey who is a baton twirler and Brielle, the little girl who is brainy – she is well famous in America!

The 24-page leaflet also includes Healey Dell and Tearoom, Ellenroad Steam Museum and Touchstones Arts and Heritage Centre. Councillor Janet Emsley cabinet member for neighbourhoods, community and culture said: “The borough is packed with lots of perfect days out and we’ve put together this guide to give people a flavour of the attractions, activities, heritage and family fun available. Combine it all with our beautiful countryside, picturesque villages, reservoirs, exciting festivals and designer shopping and the borough is a fabulous destination all year round”.

For those wanting to explore more of the borough’s rich history the guide features blue and purple plaque trails, as well as the Cotton Famine Road, featured on BBC2 last year. You can also find out the history behind Middleton’s stunning architecture - the ‘Golden Cluster’, designed by Edgar Wood, including the oldest church, pub and school in Greater Manchester. Summer 2017 Fashion Top Ten Trends

1. CROCHET - the 70s folksy festival fabric is a heavyweight trend this season, in the form of bikinis, vest tops, shorts, tshirts or bags, and is an effortless way to add a little boho vibe to your look. Crochet is a kind of simultaneous throwback/ update for your wardrobe that works (almost) as well in sunny Manchester as it does in Ibiza.

2. COLD-SHOULDER TOPS the perfect solution for spring into summer dressing, this style allows a little skin to show without revealing too much, and is great for pairing with either jeans and flats or dressed up with heels. The cold shoulder is showing no sign of going away this season.

3. SPARKLY SANDALS whether six inches high or flats for the beach, glitter, jewels and sparkle are the order of the day for summer footwear. Pom-poms and feathers optional.

4. LITTLE RED BAG adds a pop of colour to your outfit to take you from day to night.

8. SUPER BRIGHTS - fuschia pink, canary yellow, Kermit green and swimming pool blue were all heavily featured on catwalks, a look which has of course filtered down onto the high street. Avoid patterns and go for bold statement pieces paired with monochrome to create an

5. NEW SUNGLASSES - the sun might show its face once or twice this summer, so I’ve heard anyway. So you’ll need to invest in some new sunnies just in case. The sexy cats-eye style frames are still bang on trend, as are the round John Lennon-style bug eye glasses, which look good at the beach or in the bar. Or you could always opt for the perenially stylish aviator shape, which suit both the boys and the girls, for whatever the

eyecatching but ultra stylish outfit.

occasion.

6. THE BACKPACK - once the preserve of hikers and five year olds, the humble backpack is undergoing a bit of a revival. It is super-practical leaving you hands free for festivals, shopping, and holidays, can fit loads in, and can be found across the high street in a plethora of fabrics from leather to silk and everything in

9. 80S REVIVAL - featuring frills, ruffles, one shouldered, high-shine, glittery, draped, puffed and volumised fabrics yes, this means shoulder pads. This look is really for evening time and can create an amazing curvy silhouette, with added volume at the shoulder and hips enhancing a waist nipped in with an oversized statement belt and pointy stilettos. Think Bananarama, Blondie, Princess Diana...and you won’t go far wrong.

between.

7. VINTAGE STYLE SWIMWEAR - kitschy polka dot prints, high waisted bikinis, 50s style halternecks, and sassy one pieces are where it’s at by the pool this season. Not only are these vintage styles super flattering, they will never go out of fashion because of their classic, classy aesthetic.

10. SLOGANS - another throwback to the 80s, the slogan tshirt (or hat, or bag) just keeps turning up year after year like a bad penny. Can be worn purely to show off your fashion credentials or, as by George Michael then and Dior now, to make a political statement...what could be more trendy right now?

So there you have it, ten easy ways to summer-ize your wardrobe. Now all we need is that raincloud to go away... Rachel Clarke

Why not seek out 1960s woven plastic chairs for your conservatory instead of modern plastic alternatives.

Vintage Style: The rise of retro ‘Vintage’ is most definitely the new ‘new’… A quick glance around any interiors or fashion store underlines that everything from vintage inspired dresses, shoes, linens, cushions, furniture and accessories – is the look and feel that the majority of retailers are aspiring to inspire us with. Riding the current zeitgeist of nostalgia, which has seen a revival of home crafts and baking in recent years, ‘vintage’ – once the favoured adjective for fine wines and cars – is now used to describe items from the 1920s to the 1980s which still have a little of bit of style, substance and charm about them. Everything from 1940s utilitarian enamel mugs, to 1950s ornate beaded handbags can be termed ‘vintage’. Traditional ‘old school’ brands are also capitalising on the current trend and singing about their vintage heritage – re-launching previously de-listed products (Heinz Salad Cream?) and using colours, fonts and imagery from their halcyon bygone eras. Think; the M&S Archive by Alexa Chung and Butlin’s candy coloured re-brand. Forget that new twelve side pound coin – its time honoured style that is the new currency. With summer now (hopefully!) here, everyone from the supermarkets to the high-end High Street stores will be peddling a comprehensive array of vintage inspired summer ‘must haves’. But – instead opting for the quick and easy reproduction nostalgia fix, why not use this summer’s shopping list as an excuse to dip a 24

lacquered toe into – what we northerners like to call – proper vintage? Floral and gingham tea dresses, bright plastic jewellery and quirky colourful sunglasses, picnic hampers and candy striped wooden deckchairs, can all be very easily picked up – in most cases – for the same price as their ‘repro’ imitators. Plus buying vintage is not only great fun and incredibly satisfying, but also has 100% green recycling shopping credentials. Some of the coolest summer inspired vintage goodies to seek out are of course al fresco dining items. Can’t find a vintage hamper you like, then why not collect brightly coloured melamine ‘crockery’ and make your own? You might be on the lookout for a traditional tartan picnic rug; but don’t discount other brightly coloured vintage blankets which could make an inspiring alternative. A deckchair might be a must, but again, don’t be disheartened if you don’t come across any. Instead why not buy some eye-catching vintage fabric and cover your own? (the basic frames can be bought quite cheaply). And, make sure you grab yourself a pair of pinking shears to knock up your own fabulous bunting from the remnants. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

The easiest and best place to start ‘shopping vintage’ is at one of the many fairs that have become increasingly popular over recent years. Fairs usually bring together twenty plus stall holders under one roof and showcase a broad range of items. Often with vintage inspired tea-rooms and live music, vintage fairs guarantee an eclectic and enchanting day out. Victoria Benn Victoria Benn is a partner at www. yorkshirevintagefairs.com who are hosting the Vintage Fair at Hebden Bridge Town Hall on September 23rd and 24th 10am - 4.30pm.

FUN FOR FIVE GRAND

So we have a new government (and could indeed have another one by the time you read this) and as ever in time of political uncertainty the financial markets have become as unpredictable as a bucking bronco. Whilst some people may turn to the safe shores of the gold market to invest their nest egg, I still prefer the automotive option for investing a small nest egg, but most importantly, something that will be fun to have in your life. As has become tradition, these are my three tips for maximising fun on a shoestring budget. R EN AULT CLI O W I LLI A M S For many years, a debate has raged amongst Petrolheads as to which car was the best ever hot hatch. The Peugeot 205 GTi and early Golf GTi regularly make the short list but both, in my opinion have shortcomings. Being from the very end of the hot hatch period though, the Clio Williams has most of the niggles sorted.

nipping out for a pint of milk will put a smile on your face. Prices have been rocketing skywards for a while now but a useable, clean example

The 2.0-litre 150bhp normally aspirated engine is relatively simple in technology so that there isn’t much that can go wrong and feels peppy all the way through the rev range. The chassis, which although it carries the name of the Formula 1 champions of the time has no direct links with the racing team, is absolutely sublime. Its tautness and clever suspension balance means that even 26

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

should still be available within our selfimposed ÂŁ5,000 budget. Look out for rust, especially around the rear wheel arches and inner wings, as most body panels are no longer available to buy off the shelf.

VOL KSWAG E N CO RRA D O In the classic car world, you find many people who are loyal to a specific brand and the strongest clan out there are the Volkswagen loving self-styled ‘Dubbers. At any show you will a strong contingent of Beetles, Golfs and Type 2 variant vans. But the second generation is now coming through and demand for later cars is on the rise, particularly the Corrado.

FIAT 500 Whilst I would be the last one to argue that speed (used in the correct environment and conditions) is fun, there is also something about the classic FIAT 500 that never fails to bring a smile to my face. Whilst the original Mini has its large and deserved fan base, for me the original Cinquecento just has the edge in the cuteness stakes. This was a simple and basic car back when it was new, but with the earlier cars now over fifty years old, the simplicity of the engineering really seems almost prehistoric, but that all adds to the charm. If it breaks down a simple understanding of mechanics, a socket set, hammer and screwdriver will usually be enough to put the problem right. Power comes from a

tiny two-pot 499cc engine putting out a mind-warping 17bhp in early cars. Later cars came with around 25bhp but this may seem a bit lairy fro some! When the ‘new’ FIAT 500 launched it sent prices of the classic cars rocketing skywards but since then prices have fallen and settled at a much more sensible level. A £5k budget should get you a nicely restored useable car, or if you feel particularly brave, buy a cheap one and spend the rest of the budget doing the restoration yourself, that’s what I’m doing at present!

Mark D’Apice

The engine line up changed over its lifespan but my favourite variant is the 1.8 G60, with the 2.9 VR6 following a close second. My preference for the G60 comes from its supercharged engine, which unlike a turbo forces more air into the engine throughout the rev range, rather than just high up, giving a wonderfully smooth torque curve and smooth acceleration right from take-off. It also has the underpinnings to make this, in my opinion, the best coupe of the nineties and Auto Express magazine agreed with me when they described it as “regarded as one of VWs best ever driver’s cars” Prices vary greatly depending on spec and modifications, with top of the range standard cars being worth more. Mileage is rarely an issue with these cars providing there is plenty of history to back up a strict servicing regime. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Edward Stott - “The Poet-Painter Of The Twilight” I was visiting Newcastle-upon-Tyne last year and wandered into the Laing Art Gallery to kill an hour or so before my train home arrived. My eyes fell on a beautiful painting. I looked at the information panel and saw the name Edward Stott (1859- 1918), born in Rochdale. Once again, I was intrigued, who was Edward Stott? William Edward Stott was born on 25 April 1859, the son of Samuel Stott, a mill owner and twice mayor of Rochdale (1863-64 and 1865-1866). The 1861 census shows the family living in the Wardle area with Edward the second of three sons. He was educated at the local grammar school and King’s School , Ely. Edward’s family did not want him to pursue an artistic career so Edward worked for five years in the textile trade in Manchester. He attended evening classes at Manchester School Of Art at this time. In 1880 Edward moved to Paris where he trained to paint; he returned to England inspired by the French Impressionists such as Claude Monet. Edward would make many sketches in pencil, crayon and pastel in the open air, writing notes on the weather, light and colour before starting on painting the final piece in his studio. Edward first exhibited his paintings at the Royal Academy in 1883 and was elected an Associate Royal Academician in 1906. The 1891 census has Edward living as a boarder with the Cooter family at Church Street, Amberley in the district of Horsham in West Sussex. Edward had

Lancashire artist” and praised his “later exquisite pastorals”.

moved to this part of rural England in 1887 and stayed there for the rest of his life. In Amberley Edward drew the local people, animals and countryside and clearly perfected his skill in capturing the atmospheric effects of nature. This type of painting has been called “rural naturalism” where scenes of country life are painted in a realist, sometimes sentimentalised manner. Towards the end of his life, Edward’s work became more religious; this can be seen in “Study for The Good Samaritan”, “There Was No Room At The Inn” and “The Carpenter’s Shop”. Edward died on 19 March 1918 and was buried at St Michael’s Church in Amberley. He had a housekeeper in the village named Anne Dinnage to whom Edward left his cottage, studio and all his remaining paintings and drawings after his death. Probate records show an estate worth over £18,000. It is hard to exactly calculate such an amount in today’s values, but a six figure sum is probably appropriate. Edward also generously left £25,000 to the Royal Academy to provide travelling scholarships for art students and to purchase modern works. His obituary in the Rochdale Observer calls him a “great www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Clearly, Edward was a very successful and highly acclaimed artist. His paintings are in art galleries all over northern England Birkenhead; Bolton; Bradford; Hull; Leeds; Manchester; Oldham and Preston - as well as Dundee and Glasgow in Scotland. I have gleaned this information from an excellent website www.artuk.org. Art UK is the online home of every public collection of paintings in the UK and has over 200,000 oil paintings to look through, allowing you to compile your own gallery of paintings without leaving your home! More usefully, Art UK gives the current location of each work of art. Down under, there is even one of Edward’s later paintings at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia! In Rochdale itself we are very fortunate that Touchstones have several of Edward’s paintings in their collection. Richard Lysons

Why take out a Dignity funeral plan? There are lots of reasons to take out a Dignity funeral plan. It’s the chance to put your affairs in order and protect your loved ones from the stress and expense of arranging the funeral. What’s more, it allows you to freeze funeral costs at today’s prices, so you’re protected against inflation.

Our funeral plans are guaranteed Funeral plans aren’t the only way to take care of funeral costs. You could invest your money or take out an over 50’s policy, but neither of these options are guaranteed to cover funeral expenses in the future. After all, they’ll rise with time, but the amount you’re covered for won’t. So when the time comes, the cost of the funeral may exceed the amount you’re covered for. Whereas, a Dignity Funeral Plan is guaranteed to cover the cost of all services outlined in the plan. If you choose a Dignity Funeral Plan, you’ll pay the price of the plan and not a penny more. But if you choose a lifeassurance or over 50’s policy, you may have to continue making payments right up to the point where a payout is made, which means you could end up paying more than the lump sum paid out.

What’s more, these other ways to save for the cost of your funeral don’t include help with the funeral arrangements, so your family would still have to do that themselves. With a Dignity Funeral Plan your loved ones will be helped and guided with the arrangements by a helpful and compassionate Dignity Funeral Director. Here are a few things that you may not know about Dignity and our pre-arranged Funeral Plans: •

You’re guaranteed to be accepted if you’re aged 50 or over;

You don’t have to pay all at once, you can spread the cost over 12, 60 or 120 months;

It’s not just individuals who trust Dignity; we’re the preferred funeral plan provider of Age UK, RIAS,Legal & General and many moremhighly respected companies.

Frozen in Time... The abandoned church Hollingworth Lake attracts thousands of visitors for its beauty and attractions. However, within metres of its waters and close to a busy footpath lies a mystery which few of those visitors would suspect. St.Hildas Mission Church lies abandoned just off Rakewood Rd, the subject of renewed interest in recent years. Nothing prepares you for the sight that greets you of this old, but still beautiful, building which finally closed its doors after its last service in 1998. In those 20 years some deterioration has taken place. Its timbered, arched entrance and window frames are rotting and frail with the whole of the lovely building showing increasing signs of its battles against the harsh Pennine climate. Despite all of this St Hildas has a grace and a beauty, like a fading Hollywood movie star. The place is “very of its time” that being 1931 when it was moved to this location. There are clear “No Entry” signs on display and so the interior can only be guessed at but as you walk around the outside you can only guess and sense that it might be equal to the exterior with its 1930’s charm. From the outside, the rear of the church displays a tall painted glass widow with a central crucifix and the timber front porch entrance is still beautiful though crumbling. The colour of the building is, perhaps, as 30

surprising as its location. A subdued green hue is not what you would expect. The church sits within a well kept garden, the lawns neatly and regularly mown and the surrounding hedges also well clipped. Finding answers about St.Hildas are not easy but a visit to Touchstones does provide some. Littleborough itself grew in size and significance as canals a and rail brought industry and a rising population. Rakewood became part of that expansion and became a thriving community. St. Hildas was purchased at a cost of £6000 by Milnrow parish church from the nearby Catholic community to provide a much better facility than their small mission building. It was dedicated by the Archdeacon Sale to provide services in 1931. It provided for the congregation for 60 years until its eventual closure. It became known as “The Tin Church” or “The Church on the Water”. In 1975 some modifications took place with the interior being divided into two to provide both church and meeting rooms. The church, however, suspended services there in the mid 1980’s due to structural problems. With only “monthly” services irregularly held the church finally closed www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

its doors in 1998 and the building was abandoned. The question as to why it has remained like this for 20 years is difficult to answer. The land was bequeathed to the people of the parish and so no restoration or demolition can be undertaken without the permission of all the owners who cannot all be traced. Until such time as it can be safely assumed that none of that generation still survive can a decision be made by the relevant parties. In the meantime this extraordinary piece of bygone times remains, but for how much longer is, like the church itself, a mystery.

“Believe it or not BBQ season is upon us and it looks like, for once, we’re going to get a bit of luck and get to spend our days in the sunshine. But whether it’s cracking the flags or your grilling under your brolly in some prime summertime showers the same old burnt sausages and rubber burgers can put a dampener on any BBQ. So I’ve come up with some simple but most excellent recipes to give your BBQ that something different that your guests will be talking about for months! Get the friends and family round, throw on some Kiss and crack open a few beers while you grill away to your hearts content - cosmic!” Ingredients 500g lean mince, decent stuff 250g pork mince 75g breadcrumbs 50g Parmesan cheese, finely grated 1 egg 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 3 tbsp good bbq sauce Few sprigs of thyme & parsley, finely chopped Good pinch of chilli flakes (optional) Sea salt & black pepper 6 tomatoes - plum are best Hot sauce Soft hotdog style rolls - brioche rolls work well Method Now this is an absolute breeze. First of all, light your BBQ, crack open a beer, put the radio on. Secondly, get all of your ingredients, except the tomatoes, in a big bowl and give them a good old mix together. Get your hands in there and get messy, this is the hardest part of the whole thing and it’s not that difficult at all.

COOKING WITH

The Head Chef of The Oxford Pub, Rochd

BBQ MEATBALL SUB “This is one of those ways of doing things, once you’ve tried it you’ll wonder how you coped before, just thread those beefy nuggets of loveliness onto a skewer and let them cook to smokey perfection, smash up some grilled tomatoes and pile the whole lot into bread rolls. Makes a change from those same old burnt sausages.” Once mixed, clingfilm the bowl and leave it to do it’s thing for a good half hour. Now form the meatballs into good walnut sized balls and thread them onto metal BBQ skewers, you want about eight per skewer. If you want at this point you can throw on some onions or peppers to make meatball kebabs but I’m a purist. Brush your balls with oil then place the skewers on the BBQ. Slice your tomatoes in half, remove the woody cores, season with a little salt & pepper and give them a little dash of olive oil, then place them on the BBQ too. Now close the lid and leave the whole thing well enough alone, save for turning everything over every five minutes. Now, and this is the most important part of the process, grab yourself a spot in the sun, put your feet up for a while, open up another cold beer, consider putting some AC/DC on.

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

After 15/20 minutes take the tomatoes off the heat, place in a bowl with a few dashes of hot sauce and give them a mash with a fork till broken down a little. Now the technical part… cut your bread roll open, spoon in a little of your smashy tomato, then USING A TEA TOWEL get the metal skewer, holding the bread in one hand and the skewer in the other put four meatballs inside the bread and applying a little pressure on the bread you can pull away the skewer leaving in it’s place a perfect meatball sub. It’s best you do this in full view of your guests, they’ll be amazed - pause for applause then continue until all the meatballs are used up. Serve up with some grated cheese, sour cream, your leftover smashy tomatoes and hot sauce for people to help themselves too and there you have it, legendary BBQ status achieved.

TOM MCNEENEY

dale, shares his summer BBQ specials... Ingredients 2kg chicken thighs, boneless & skinless 1 large red pepper 1 large green pepper 1 large yellow pepper 2 red onions 100g fajita seasoning 1 lime Flour tortillas Guacamole: 2 avocados 1/2 red onion 1/2 red chilli 1 lime 1 ripe tomato Handful of coriander Salt & pepper Method This one takes a little getting ready but boy is it worth it! You’re going to need to do a little work ahead to assure your big BBQ day goes like a dream. Now this kebab IS your BBQ, there’s going to be more than enough here for four people so don’t worry that it sounds like a lot. Start by placing all of your chicken thighs in a big bowl, squeezing over the juice of the lime and throwing in your fajita seasoning - you can make your own, for an easy life here we’re not. Now get all of that chicken mixed up so it’s all got a good coating, cover with some cling film and leave in the fridge for a few hours or till the next day if you can. Right, when you’re ready to build your kebab get your BBQ lit so it’s just the right temperature once we’ve finished assembling. You want to cut your peppers and onions into good sized pieces making sure to separate the layers in the onion.

CHICKEN FAJITA PARTY KEBAB “This is the ultimate BBQ fix, charred and gnarly on the outside, perfectly cooked and juicy on the inside. Place this in the middle of the table, proudly carve it off the skewer and let people help themselves while you bask in compliments and general good vibes off the back of your BBQ brilliance.” Get yourself a chopping board and lay two metal kebab skewers on it about 7cm apart, thread a chicken thigh onto both skewers and push it right down to the bottom. Now alternate between chicken and veg, layer by layer making sure to keep the skewers the same distance apart and to keep threading the chicken across both skewers until you’ve used up everything.

While this is happening get yourself making some guacamole. Get your hands on a big bowl and into it put the scooped out insides of your avocados, your tomato and onion, roughly diced, your half a chilli, finely sliced, some torn up coriander and the juice of your lime. Give the whole lot a good mix up and a smash down with the back of a fork, season and place on the table ready for the main event.

Now you’ve got a behemoth kebab and it’s going to take some cooking, so get it brushed with oil, place it on a medium heat and get that lid closed - save for turning it every 10 minutes or so your work there is done.

Now, using a tea towel and a sharp knife place your massive kebab on a chopping board, point down and holding it upright carve downwards with your knife, cutting away layers and layers of dreamy fajita goodness.

Keep an eye out for it getting a bit too much colour and if so move the shelf up a little or turn the gas down.

Arrange it all on a massive platter with your guacamole in the centre & warm tortillas on the side, get some people over and make the most of the sunshine, it’s not often it happens!

After 45 minutes take it off the heat and let it rest for 10 minutes before you attempt to handle it.

Style’s Wedding Planning Tips Style Editor, Ruth Parkinson, recently tied the knot! Find out her top money saving tips, along with some highly recommended local wedding suppliers... Destination weddings are becoming increasingly popular among bride & grooms who want guaranteed sunshine, less stress, along with a once-in-a-lifetime family holiday! But jetting off abroad unfortunately does mean leaving a lot of family and friends behind. We decided we wanted the best of both worlds (just to get our money’s worth out of the dress of course) so with a fair bit of budgeting, a dozen trips to Hobbycraft and lots of DIY, we managed Wedding Part One in Ravello, Italy and Part Two back in good old Rochdale. Along the way, we met some incredibly talented wedding suppliers... Acoustic singer and DJ - Michael Mulholland Venue - The Riverside, Whitworth Bouquets - Elizabeth Rose Cake - Brownie tower by A Jar of Happiness, Colne Letter Lights - Victoria at The Letter Light Company, Shawforth Shoes - Charlotte Mills, Uppermill, Saddleworth Dress - Paloma Blanca from Claire Louise Brides, Bolton Alterations - Brides of Rochdale, Drake Street, Rochdale PhotoLounge - JMEventpix, Rochdale Make up - The Retreat, St Mary’s Gate, Rochdale Hair - Just Lisa, Whitworth Road, Rochdale Dry cleaning - Impeccable Dry Cleaners, Cutgate Precinct

D.I.Y Save a small fortune by making your own invitations, decorations, table settings and favours. Hobby Craft’s ideas library (hobbycraft. co.uk) has hundreds of step-by-step guides. Pinterest is perfect for DIY inspiration, mood boards and keeping track of your ideas. We used polaroids of guests, pegs and string to make a table plan for a grand total of £5.50! There’s also plenty of free printables available online; everything from table names to thank you cards. Prioritise Decide on your budget and prioritise what is most important to you. As a rule of thumb: food, drink and venue hire should be about half of your budget. Many venues offer small rental fees, but check (and triple check) the small print. If you have to rent everything, from chairs to napkins, you might blow your budget. Think outside the box Keep in mind that you don’t need to stick to convention or have everything you’re told you need. Do things a little differently… have a buffet or barbeque instead of a sit-down meal or make a playlist of your favourite songs instead of booking a band or DJ. Dress for less THE dress is probably going to be the most expensive wedding purchase you make, with the average spend being just under £1400. But don’t panic, there are still ways to avoid shelling out four-figure sums. There are plenty of second hand dresses around that are as good as new for a fraction of the price. Almost every bridal shop also has a sample rail, where you can sometimes pick up a brand new dress for as little as a quarter of its retail value. Even if the dress isn’t in your size, alterations by a good seamstress will often work out a lot better for your pocket... with the added bonus that you will have more to spend on shoes! Speaking of shoes, make sure you buy a pair of extra comfy ones or take a pair of sparkly flats to slip on later in the evening. You don’t want blisters when you’re dancing the night away to Oasis and Take That (you can take the girl out of Manchester...).

normally wear. If you go too high you may not be able to wear them all day. 2. Don’t put your shoes on for the first time on the wedding morning. Wear them around the house on soft carpeted areas before the big day to break them in. 3. Go for shoes which are well made. If you go for quality, your shoes should be soft, light and have lots of padding. 4. Choose a style which you can wear again. We take this in to account when designing all our shoes. Brides should fall in love with their shoes and want to wear again and again after their wedding day. 5. If you’re worried about being in heels all day, it’s a great idea to pick up a fabulous flat pair, which you can change in to dance the night away. And you get two pairs of new shoes – what’s not to love about that.

Each pair of Charlotte Mills shoes is hand crafted in Spain using only very best materials and craftsmanship. Charlotte’s Shoes are romantic yet fun, with fashion forward styling. Summer Beauty Tips Forever longing for the perfect summer skin and curious as to how it can be achieved? Are you longing to know the secrets of those other women by the pool? Don’t worry, you too can kick start your flawless holiday skin with a number of fabulous summer products and treatments. Our skin is affected by many factors, including our environment, health, the food we eat, and more! So we have a few tips and tricks to have you heading in the right direction. Prep and pamper your skin with a leg, under arm, bikini, Hollywood, face or brow wax. Simply the best way to smooth skin. It lasts longer than shaving by pulling the hairs from the roots, with no cuts or nicks that can leave you with scars. For many, waxing makes the hairs grow slower and finer, ensuring smoother skin for longer without feeling itchy because of the slower hair growth. You probably exfoliate your face regularly to get rid of buildup and have a fresh, glowing appearance. You can get the same benefits for the body when you exfoliate the rest of your skin. Did you know that without regular exfoliation you can end up with clogged pores, which blocks moisture getting into the deeper layers. So in order to have the healthiest and smoothest skin possible, exfoliating is key.

brush down, again using circular motions. Over the stomach, go left to right - that’s the natural flow of your digestion. When you’re finished your skin should be slightly red but not irritated or painful. Follow with a natural moisturiser such as our Darphin Nourishing and Firming Velvet Cream.

whilst being beautifully protected. Highly efficient UVA/UVB sunscreens inside this elegant lightweight cream help to prevent skin damage and dark spots caused by sun exposure. So cream up and stay safe whilst the white flower aroma transports you on a sunny voyage.

You could even treat yourself to our Perfect Body Polish to leave your skin feeling revitalised and appearing brighter. Alternatively try our St Tropez Manual Tan including a Body Polish before a manual tanning treatment and achieve a more natural looking tan.

Even if the sun isn’t where you are this summer, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the aroma and summer look. Darphin’s all new Sultry Shimmering Oil is perfect for all skin types for use on the face, body and hair. It leaves a veil of shimmer for a sun-kissed youthful glow which enhances and prolongs the look of a tan whilst softening the skin and improving suppleness... plus it smells like summer!

Start your holiday off with a sun kissed look. With so many different self tans to choose from, come and find your perfect one. From our easy to use, quick drying St. Tropez Bronzing Mousse which allows you to select your shade of tan by choosing when to wash off the tinted guide colour, to the In Shower Tanning Lotion and Luxe Dry Oil. The Luxe Oil is one of our favourites for providing a natural looking streak-free golden glow that lasts up to 10 days! With a lemongrass scented gold shimmer, the ultimate tan can be created.

Olivia Hindle / The Retreat

If you’re lucky enough to be able to build a real summer tan then protection is the key. Darphin’s anti-aging suncare is the perfect product, a luxury cream that protects you from the sun whilst providing you with soft, cared for skin. Enjoy the warmth of the sun

Exfoliation is advised two to four times a week to feel the benefits, which are: - enjoying smoother skin - reducing the chance of occasional breakouts - helping to reduce the appearance of dark spots, or age spots - minimising the appearance of large pores - reducing stress Experiment with a new scrub on a small area of skin first to be sure it works well for you. We highly recommend Darphin’s Perfecting Body Scrub - it’s rich, creamy texture transforms into a delightful emulsion upon contact with water. Apply using circular motions working from your toes upwards, directing your strokes towards the heart. Once you’ve reached your midsection, start over at the neck and

PATEL FAMILY MAKE A DIFFERENCE LOCALLY The Patel Family, who own Nisa convenience store, in Shawclough, Rochdale, recently showed their support for two very worthy causes, Rochdale charity The GEM Appeal and the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund, following the Manchester Arena terror attack. The Patel family also made sure to throw in an extra pound of luck for good measure. Nikul Patel commented: “We decided to donate £101, instead of £100, to each of the charities, as the extra £1 is a traditional Indian sign of luck.” The money raised was due to customers buying Nisa-branded goods ‘Heritage’ and selected branded goods which bear the MADL (Making A Difference Locally) logo. Every time an item included in the MADL scheme is purchased, a proportion of the price is added to the charity pot. You can find out more about the charity at www.makingadifferencelocally.com. Usually donations out of the MADL (Making a difference Locally) fund are only to be used for local charities/causes within a certain distance of the store but Nisa/MADL waived the locality rule as a one-off in support of Manchester. Nikul added: “We would like to thank our loyal customers for helping to raise this money by shopping locally. Supporting the shop means we can support worthy causes and money is put back into the community.” The Patel family present a donation to Karen Johnson & fundraisers from the GEM Appeal

“OUR ENID” The Life and Work of Enid Stacy 1868-1903 by Angela Tuckett Enid Stacy’s name - to my embarrassment - was not known to me until the recent publication of this fascinating biography. The book was researched and written by Angela Tuckett , Enid’s niece, who died in 1994 leaving the manuscript unpublished. Finally, 22 years later, the book has been skilfully edited by Margaret Cohen, Jen Morgan and our own Rae Street of Littleborough. I am happy to say that the finished product is excellent. Angela Tuckett herself was also a remarkable woman and there is a brief tribute to the author at the start of the book. Although Angela was born three years after her aunt’s death, she was able to borrow Enid’s diaries, papers and photographs for the book’s research. Despite the wealth of detail, this is not a dry, factual book but a very human and affecting tribute to the extraordinary Enid Stacy.

responsibilities. This must have been so much harder in those days with Enid having to be away from home so often, lecturing up and down the country. During this time Enid visited the United States of America two times, travelling from state to state lecturing and campaigning.

The daughter of Christian socialists, Enid had studied at Bristol University and then went on to teach at a girls school in Bristol. But Enid lost her teaching job because of her involvement in political activity. Subsequently she devoted her life to campaigning for women’s rights and socialism. Throughout the 1890’s Enid travelled widely, lecturing for the Independent Labour Party and accompanying the Clarion newspaper’s van. It is worth remembering that women in Britain did not have the vote until after the First World War and the fight to obtain it was not easy. In 1897 Enid married Percy Widdrington a fellow Independent Labour Party member. Three years later, Enid’s husband became a temporary vicar of St James Church at Calderbrook in Littleborough. There are frequent references to how little money the couple had to live on, as well as to the balancing act that so many women have to perform with their work and their family 44

One striking passage in the book describes Enid speaking for an hour and a half in Rochdale’s Town Hall Square about “the Social Teaching of the Lord’s Prayer” in the pouring rain! Sadly, with all this work, her health worsened and, on Friday 4 September 1903 Enid died of an embolism. She was aged only 35. Enid left behind her husband Percy and young son Gerard. It is exhausting just reading about the sheer number of public meetings; lectures and demonstrations in which Enid took part in the last third of her life. Her grave is at St James Church in Calderbrook and there is also a blue plaque in Enid’s honour. The book is available from George Kelsall’s bookshop in Littleborough and at Touchstones. At only £5 it is an excellent introduction to the early days of both women’s suffrage and the fight for socialism. A television adaptation is surely deserved: can someone contact Sally Wainwright?! (Our Enid is published by the Working Class Movement Library ISBN 978-09523410-3-1)

A very lucky couple called at one of our recent roadshow events with a couple of old gold chains and a silver charm bracelet and a bag of old silver British coins. We paid them over £1600.00 just for the coins alone . They turned out to be pre 1947 silver coins that were normal currency a few years ago and are now highly collected. We asked them for their permission to pass on this story to help other people realise what they may be sitting on and they were only too pleased to allow us to let everyone know that they might be sitting on a goldmine and not even know it! Like most people, who can only dream of winning the pools or the lottery, a lot of normal households have a hidden treasure of old gold jewellery, silver jewellery, teapots, trophies, trays and old objets d’art. Why not get a free valuation from our expert at our roadshow; at THE NORTON GRANGE HOTEL, MANCHESTER ROAD, CASTLETON, M24 2RB . With free carparking and WiFi. There is no queing and our expert will give you a one on one appraisal of the value of your treasured possessions in a private area, where there are no prying eyes, watching the process evolve. If you like the valuation our expert will make you the same offer in cash which you can accept or decline at no cost to yourself. The whole process of Valuation is free of charge and very private, so you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

Many people are totally unaware of the value of unusual and old items that they own and are just hidden away in drawers around the house. Dealers are now paying record high prices for old jewellery and gold and silver objects and collectables. Most unusual gold and silver items are no longer fashionable but there are still collectors who we deal with that will pay record high prices for your old gold and silver jewellery, and items. Wristwatches and old fashioned pocket watches can surprise you with their values and you will be amazed by the amount that is currently being offered for such items. Get looking NOW in your old drawers, cupboards, and jewellery boxes. Look in the attic and the cellar, even old broken or squashed item of jewellery and silver are valuable and worth having appraised at these free roadshows. BRANDY SNAP ICE CREAM CONES Forget soggy wafer ice cream cones, these dainty little creations are in a different league – they’re crispy, crunchy and filled with whatever flavour ice cream or sorbet you fancy. I have to admit though I am a bit partial to a mint choc chip Cornetto - the ones with dark chocolate at the bottom of each cone. Andrew Nutter CELEBRITY CHEF

Ingredients:

Method: 1)

Melt the butter and glucose together in a small pan. Remove from heat and add the sugar and flour. Mix well.

100g butter

2)

Cool and leave in fridge until needed.

90g glucose

3)

To bake form the mixture into small balls the size of marbles. Place on a non-stick tray well spaced apart and bake in a hot oven 170º until a light golden.

4)

Working quickly, lift off the tray and form into cone shapes, leave to cool. Speed is of the essence as the mixture soon goes brittle. Store in an airtight container until ready to use.

ROCHDALE RSPCA NEWS & EVENTS Since our last report in the spring edition of Style the Animal Centre has continued to care for and rehome a variety of animals and birds.

medication. Penny is now looking for her forever home, can you offer her the security and love she deserves?

An RSPCA Inspector responded to a call about some chickens whose owner was in hospital. Once the inspector arrived, they came across not only chickens but also several cats living in poor conditions. We took the cats and chickens into our care and happily all have now been rehomed.

New RSPCA shop in Whitworth On Friday 19th May we opened the 11th shop in the Rochdale branch area at 595 Market St, Whitworth. The Mayor of Whitworth, Madeline de Souza, performed the opening ceremony and the staff were kept busy all day dealing with customers and accepting donations of items to sell in our shops. If you can help by volunteering or donating goods please ask in this or any of our shops.

Without the RSPCA Animal Centre both of these cats would have had a doubtful future. As well as helping the cats, the work of the centre has given peace of mind to the owners who were both greatly distressed by the situation with their pets. Hank the Bearded Dragon was recently brought in by one of the Inspectors. A distressed landlord went into his property after the previous tenants had moved out some weeks before. He had found this little chap, cold, hungry and hours from death. As you can see from the photograph, he was extremely underweight but has now responded well to our care and his health is improving. One recent success story concerns a cat called Kitty, belonging to a Rochdale lady who had to move to a care home. Her owner had tried to rehome her but couldn’t find anyone to take her on due to her fractious nature. She had been staying in a private cattery for a couple of months whilst her owner tried to find her a home but we agreed to take her into the animal centre where the staff and volunteers then spent time rehabilitating her. Kitty is no longer fractious but a friendly cat and is now relaxed in her new home with loving owners. Penny had been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism some time ago and had been stable on medication. However, her owner also needed to go into a home and couldn’t take her. Unfortunately, the family’s cats didn’t get on with Penny. They tried to rehome her but were struggling because of the commitment to giving her long term medication. At the Animal Centre we have taken her on and will pay for an operation to treat the overactive thyroid gland so that she can be rehomed without ongoing 58

Add to the above examples, lost, abandoned or cruelly treated dogs, stray rabbits found in a Rochdale park and hamsters brought in by an inspector, there is never a dull moment for our staff and volunteers. In 2016 we provided loving care for 466 animals. Can you help support the work we do? Please check our website for details www.rspca-rochdale.org.uk www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Sponsor a Pod The Animal Centre is a rehoming centre and our cat pods can be used many times throughout the year. To support our work we will be launching our Sponsor a Pod scheme soon. It will help us to continue to give the most abused cats, dogs and other animals in society the care they deserve during their stay with us before being adopted. One year sponsorships of varying amounts will be available and you’ll receive benefits too. Watch out for full details which will be announced on our website and Facebook page. COMMUNITY NEWS FUNDRAISING & FELLOWSHIP

Inner Wheel is one of the largest women’s service organisations in the world, with over 100,000 members from more than 103 countries across the world. Their aim is to promote true friendship, encourage the ideals of personal service and foster international understanding. They work together to make a difference in the community and improve lives. Rochdale Inner Wheel Club currently has 20 members, who meet monthly for a meal, along with a speaker or other entertainment. They have a full and varied programme of events throughout the year, some

fundraising, others purely social, such as their Book Club.

MAKING A BIG DIFFERENCE A new website has launched, urging visitors to Rochdale town centre to help those in need by donating online. The aim of the site, bigchangerochdale.co.uk, is to encourage people to donate either their time or cash to local charities, rather than giving directly to people on the streets. The move, which has been spearheaded by Rochdale Town Centre Management with support from the council, the police and local charities, is designed to support people who are sleeping rough in Rochdale at the moment. Denis Skelton, from Petrus, one of the charities involved in the scheme, said: “The launch of this new site is really exciting because it offers people the chance to do something really positive, which will make a big difference to their community.

The Club has its own Community Fundraising team who collect items for Petrus and organise a lunch at Nutters for the President’s chosen charity, which this year is Crossroads Care. They also have an International Fundraising team who are currently working to support Medic Malawi. Rochdale Inner Wheel are always happy to welcome new members. If you are interested in joining please call Sue on 01706 376204 or visit: www.iwrochdale.co.uk.

MAKING THE CHANGE: L-R: Richard Shaw from the Sanctuary Trust, Denis Skelton from Petrus, Cllr Shaun O’Neill, Chair of the Rochdale Township, Margaret Wight from the Rochdale

YORKSHIRE BANK, ROCHDALE, RECENTLY RAISED £180 FOR ROCHDALE HEARTBEAT.

Foodbank and Mark Foxley, from Rochdale Town Centre Management.

“These online donations will help us give people even more help with jobs and training, counselling and advice with benefits, as well as clothing, food and help with housing. They will also help us run our supported housing scheme for vulnerable women in central Rochdale. People who donate can be sure that their money will be going straight to those who need it and helping them in really practical ways.” The website also gives people information on practical ways they can support local charities, like Petrus, Stepping Stone Projects and the Sanctuary Trust.

FROM NORDEN WITH LOVE The Rochdale community recently showed their support for the Manchester bomb victims with a sold-out fundraising event at Norden Cricket Club. Organised by local DJ, Dave Sweetmore, ‘From Norden With Love’ raised £3357 for the British Red Cross Manchester Bomb Victims Appeal. The event included a special guest appearance from Andrew Freddie Flintoff, who met fans and had pictures taken, and also did a Q & A session. Manchester music and anthems formed the soundtrack for the night, with DJ sets from Dave Sweetmore, Zak Thompson, Melanie Carter and Oli Makin. Modern poet, Pete Wilky, also recited a few poems about Manchester. Organiser, Dave Sweetmore, commented: ‘The terrorist attack at the Arena is something we will never forget, and although I’ve been involved with fundraising events over the last couple of weeks in the City Centre, I felt that as a Norden resident I wanted to do something in our village. I can’t thank the management and staff at Norden Cricket Club enough, their help was invaluable, and also all of the local businesses who helped out with raffle prizes. The amount we raised is phenomenal and shows what a great community we have. It was a brilliant night with an unbelievable atmosphere, so most of all, thank you to everyone who came.” www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

HOSPICE LAUNCH SUNFLOWER APPEAL Summer is here and the award winning gardens surrounding Springhill Hospice are in full bloom. What could be a more appropriate time to launch the Hospice’s new Sunflower Appeal? “We are so proud of the beautiful grounds and the pleasure they bring. The sight of patients enjoying the sunshine, flowers, hedgerows and wildlife has inspired a new campaign, which we are inviting the whole community to join”, said the Hospice’s Chief Executive, Julie Halliwell. “This summer sees the launch of our new Sunflower Appeal. The sunflower is vibrant, strong and beautiful, symbolic of life, love and faith, as well as representing the Hospice movement as a whole”, added Julie. Springhill Sunflowers are lovely, all-weather plaques approximately 22 cm high and include a space for your own brief dedication. Each Sunflower plaque is £5.50 which includes postage and are available to buy online at www.springhill.org.uk/sunflower-appeal. You can choose to display your Sunflower in your home, garden or

another special place. Wherever you decide, your sunflower will remain a warm focus over the summer for that special memory or person in your life. In addition, Springhill are also offering the opportunity to place the plaque amongst the flowers, vegetables or herb garden in the Hospice grounds during their annual Open Garden Day on 6th August. Anyone choosing to place their plaque in the Hospice grounds will receive free entry to the Open Garden day simply by bringing along their sunflower. “Some very special memories were born even when creating this campaign” explained Fundraising Manager, Lillie Winterbottom. “We took our plaques to Lower Place Primary School so see what the children there thought of our special, lasting memory, sunflowers. It was a beautiful sunny day and one I’ll never forget. The children greeted us with the most wonderful beaming smiles, they loved the sunflowers, talking, laughing and giggling together in the sunshine. Simply wonderful”.
