A celebration concert at The Riverside, Whitworth, highlighted a very successful Rochdale Festival of Performing Arts 2012. Approximately 5,500 children participated in 158 different classes,

with over 70 schools taking part. The festival took place over three weeks and concluded with the two festival celebration and awards concerts where 53 trophies were presented.

Shaw

Popular actress, singer and TV personality Suzanne Shaw has come a long way since her days in Hear’Say – the pop band formed from ITV talent contest ‘Popstars’, in 2000.

The Bury-born star has since graced stage and screen, including starring in the West End, winning Dancing On Ice in 2008 and more recently playing Eve Birch in Emmerdale.

I recently caught up with Suzanne to discuss her latest stage play, her busy life as a single mum… and meeting Robert De Niro!

When did you first tread the boards?

I was five years old and played Molly in Annie, at The Davenport Theatre in Stockport. I went to dancing school and did shows and amateur dramatics and just got the bug from there really.

Would you write an autobiography?

I’m not sure if I would. If I did it would definitely be later on in my life. But my memory is terrible - I can’t really remember what happened yesterday! It would be really boring. Oh actually, I can remember because I met Robert De Niro last night how cool is that?!

You’ve just finished touring with the stage comedy ‘Funny Peculiar’, how did it go?

The play went really well, especially the northern dates. And then we packed out most nights in our last week in Cheltenham.

I’ve not done many plays, so it was a really nice experience and a challenging thing to do. We had a great cast, Craig Gazey (Graeme Proctor, Coronation St), Vicky Entwistle (Janice Battersby, Coronation St) and Gemma Bissix (Eastenders & Hollyoaks).

What are you up to next?

I haven’t really had any time off since October so I’m taking time off at the moment. I’ve got the odd date doing charity work and PA’s, but apart from that I just want some time at home with my son Corey.

Is Corey catching the acting bug?

Yes he’s a little entertainer. He likes showing off, being the comedy boy and making people laugh.

Do you prefer stage or screen?

Stage is my first love. I love treading the boards, especially in musicals. If I was to do anything on television again, I’d like to do something like a drama or a comedy.

What would be your dream role?

I played Roxie Hart in Chicago a few years ago, which was always my dream role, so I’ve ticked that off the list, but I’d love to go back and do it again sometime. And I would love to play Sally Bowles in Cabaret.

Wow… where did you meet him?

I went to the tenth anniversary of We Will Rock You to watch my friend Noel [Sullivan, former Hear’Say bandmate] as leading man and he was there. How amazing is that, it was the highlight of my week! I very rarely get starstruck, but when I saw him my jaw dropped, I was like ‘oh my god it’s Robert De Niro!’

Are you still friends with your ex bandmates?

Noel and I are really close. I was stupidly proud of him last night at We Will Rock You. He was brilliant, I was crying at the finalé. I speak to Danny occasionally and I bump into the girls out and about. But we’re all so busy to be honest.

What do you think of tv talent competitions these days?

I think there’s far too many out there now to be honest. It would be nice to turn television back around - to how it used to be. But I can’t really knock them because they got me to where I am today.

Why did you decide to leave Emmerdale last year?

I knew i’d be coming out of it at some point, to put Corey back into school down here [Buckinghamshire], so I just thought it was inevitable really. And it felt like the right time for me to leave.

Is there a chance we’ll see you back in the Dales one day?

Not at the moment, but you can never say never in this business. You don’t know what’s around the corner.

What are your ambitions for the

More musicals would be great. There’s also a few of us who have written a sitcom so we’re trying to get that commissioned at the moment. It’s basically about life on the road with a musical theatre company and what happens backstage, so it’s pretty much within my DNA and written from experience.

I don’t really have much time for any hobbies or anything! I’m either preparing for an audition, doing the school run, cooking or cleaning!!

Do you still skate?

Yes I do, but I only like doing it when Matt [Evers] is around – my Dancing On Ice

It’s great to find talent out of these shows and give people an opportunity. But it’s just hard because the contestants aren’t protected. They get to the height of fame and then when it starts to deteriorate a lot of people are left on their own to cope with it.

What advice would you give to aspiring performers?

Just to carry on. There will be so many knock backs you have along the way, but don’t take it to heart at all. It’s nothing to do with your ability half the time; it’s about luck and being in the right place at the right time. If it’s something you’re really serious about just keep going.

The Olympic Torch will arrive in the borough around 1.45pm with the first Torchbearer carrying the flame from the junction of Edenfield Road and Elmsfield Avenue, Norden.

GOING FOR GOLD Rochdale’s Olympic hopes rest with local yachtsman Stuart Bithell and open water swimmer Keri-Anne Payne.

24-year-old Keri-Anne, from Heywood, became the very first athlete confirmed for Team GB 2012. The two-time World 10km Open Water champion and Olympic silver medallist will dive into the Serpentine on 9th August this year.

Rochdale-born Stuart Bithell, who

started out at Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club, became the 21st member of Team GB. The 25-year-old will partner Luke Patience in the Men’s 470 Class, recognised as one of the most competitive of the Olympic dinghy classes, also on 9th August.

Stuart’s recent successes include a silver medal at the 2011 World Championships in Perth and silver at the 2011 European Championships in Helsinki.

Rochdale Rotary Club has entered new cricketing territory, as the first Rotary Club in Lancashire to sponsor cricket coaching for young amateur cricketers in the Rochdale borough.

Former test match umpire and Rotarian, John Holder, asked his long term friend Michael Vaughan (Ashes winning England Captain) to attend a recent fundraising evening at the Mercure Norton Grange Hotel.

Over 180 cricket enthusiasts attended and 'Vaughany' answered questions on all aspects of modern day cricket, with his vast experience of cricket life in the fast lane.

The successful evening raised £2500, which will go towards providing cricket coaching to young Rochdale amateurs.

HEYWOOD SPORTS VILLAGE SCOOPS TOP AWARD

One of the borough’s best new buildings has scooped a top regional award known as the property ‘Oscars’.

Heywood Sports Village was named as winner of the prestigious 2012 RICS Community Benefit Award for the North West during a ceremony at Lancashire County Cricket Club.

Local people were instrumental in the design of Heywood’s £10.4 million Sports Village, which has seen public visits increase dramatically since it replaced the old sports centre.

Craig McAteer, Managing Director of Link4Life, said he was very proud: “There were some very strong nominations so to actually win the award is an excellent achievement. The community has been involved with the building right from the beginning and have really taken it to their hearts. This is much deserved by everyone involved.”

Heywood Sports Village will now go forward to the national stage of the competition held later this year.

STILL HOLDING COURT

Rochdale badminton player and coach Bob Heaton has been heavily involved in the sport for the last fifty years. He was a founding member of the Alpha club and is now vice-chairman of the Oldham and Rochdale League. He's also one of the founding members of Rochdale Junior Badminton Club and has coached many England and county players.

Bob recently celebrated his 80th birthday with the many badminton groups he still coaches and organises.

His enthusiasm for the game is as strong as ever and he still coaches badminton at all levels and at many different venues across Rochdale.

Bob belongs to a very sporting family, which includes his brothers Peter and the late Jack Heaton. Their father John Heaton (also known as Jack) played for Rochdale Hornets, in their famous victory over Hull in one of the best Northern Union Cup finals ever; infront of a record 35,000 crowd at Headingley in 1922.

PUt YoUr borough iN tHe frame!

Rochdale Borough Council is asking you to capture your special moments in a photographic competition to celebrate 2012.

‘You, Me & Us’ is a year long project calling for residents and visitors to photograph whatever they want to tell their story of 2012 - the events they take part in, the sights they see and the people they’re sharing the year with.

The project aims to mark this special year, which will see the borough play host to visitors from across the world as part of the International Year of Co-operatives.

An online photo album has been created on Rochdale Council’s Flickr page (www.flickr.com/rochdalecouncil) for people to share their experiences and, as the year draws to a close, winning

photographs will be chosen to go on public display around the borough. All photographs submitted will also form part of the Local Studies Collection managed

by Link4Life.

Professional or amateur photographers of any age can take part, all you have to do is capture your special moments. It might be a fantastic image of the borough’s countryside, a photograph showing your family enjoying a special celebration or friends out and about at one of the many events taking place in the borough.

There’s also a co-operative twist to the competition to celebrate Rochdale being

the World Capital of Co-operatives. We want people to co-operate to capture their moment. It’s about people taking pictures of people taking pictures! For example, a walker might capture their walking companion in great surroundings taking a photograph of a stunning view of Rochdale. Or someone on stage at an event might take a photo of the crowd whilst they take a photo of them on stage.

The competition is open to everyone, including visitors to the borough. Entrants can be any age and equipment used can be anything from phones to SLRs.

KIRKHOLT Secondary School’s WATERLOO Rochdale has been in the spotlight for over seven years, thanks to the award winning BBC drama series, based around Kirkholt Secondary School, now known to millions as Waterloo Road.

The series has certainly created a real buzz in the town, with filming locations all over Rochdale and numerous famous faces appearing in the drama. Sadly, filming in Rochdale has now come to an end, following the BBC drama department’s decision to move production to Scotland.

A few years ago, I was cast as union official Bill Winslow in episode two, series two, which meant I had to go back to school at Kirkholt Secondary Modern. I have played many roles on TV, but to film in my old school after forty years was a bizarre one.

Although Shed Productions altered the interior of the building, the school building itself remained very much the same as when it was built in the 1950's.

One of my old classrooms had been transformed into Waterloo Road’s wardrobe

up sitting in the canteen writing 500 lines for Mr Widdup - ‘I must not forget my kit’.

The school hall was very much as I remember it, where I recited all 22 verses of "The Battle of Hastings" monologue by Marriot Edgar, coached by Mr Starkey. I also

Secondary school can be a tough time in your life, but I have fond memories of my time growing up in Kirkholt which helped me develop my love of performing, eventually guiding me into the right career choice.

The BBC1 series not only saved the school from demolition, but gave it a brand new, exciting lease of life. Unfortunately, the cameras have now stopped rolling, with the school due to be demolished this summer.

It’s a shame the school could not become a tourist attraction for all Waterloo Road devotees.

Foot FaCts A HEALTHY STEP Painful feet can affect our ability to enjoy the most basic activities in our daily lives. Thankfully, many foot conditions can be easily prevented or treated by wearing properly fitting footwear, using the correct foot care products or receiving regular treatments from a qualified Foot Health Professional. Below are a couple of common foot problems that can be treated successfully by your FHP. CORNS develop from an accumulation of dead skin cells which form hardened areas, containing a cone shaped core with a point. This point can press on a nerve ending, thus causing pain.

Common causes are tight fitting footwear, deformed toes, or the foot sliding forwards in a shoe that fits too loosely.

TOENAIL FUNGUS is very common. The infection occurs when microscopic fungi enter the nail through a small trauma in the nail. The fungus then grows and spreads in the warm, moist, dark environment mostly enclosed by socks and shoes. The nail may crumble and have streaks or spots down the side. The nail can look yellow/brown in colour, and in some cases there can be swelling. The condition can be treated with a visit to your FHP, who will carefully and correctly cut the nail, and debride the area.

DIABETES can cause complications, disrupting the vascular system and affecting areas such as the legs and feet.

People with diabetes should pay special attention to foot care. Book a regular appointment with your FHP.

on’t worry there is something you can do! The above are all signs of ageing, a natural process which we know is determined by our genes (thanks Mum and Dad). However there is a second type of ageing which is not predetermined and can be controlled – extrinsic ageing. Extrinsic ageing is caused by external factors which our skin faces every day. Factors such as pollution, sun exposure, heating and air conditioning; if we don’t protect our skin against these factors it can lead to the premature ageing of our skin and a disappointing reflection when we look in the mirror.

Premature ageing is not something we have to sit back and accept. We can prevent it by controlling these external aggressors. The biggest factor to cause premature ageing is sun damage. A few unprotected minutes in the sun can lead to noticeable unwanted damage to our skin, namely in the form of age spots (hyper – pigmentation), freckles, blotches and dehydration lines/fine lines. The most serious effect from intentional tanning without protection is of course skin cancer; a highly preventable cancer which if left untreated could be fatal.

What can YoU do to prevent premature ageing?

• Use a high quality and high factor SPF, SPF 50 is preferable (I would recommend Darphin Vital protection SPF 50) • Avoid deliberate tanning (use a false tan such as St tropez everyday moisturiser for the face) • Use a sophisticated skincare range and ensure you use it daily • Address any skin concerns with your beauty therapist • Use an anti-dark spot treatment to address concerns regarding hyper pigmentation (try melaperfect anti-dark spot treatment)

Did you enjoy working on The X Factor?

What are your top fashion musthaves?

The X Factor was amazing - so much goes into a huge production like that and it was interesting to see behind the scenes.

Everyone should own a really well cut pair of jeans and a blazer that can be worn in so many situations with simple changes.

What are the best and worst points of your job?

What should we avoid?

I love the creativity of the job and getting to see an idea come to life when you’re shooting. I love all the clothes I get to shoot and all the people I get to work with. The worst points are definitely the long hours and shooting in crazy, cold locations for 16 hours at a time. Definitely not all glamour!

Are you an avid fashion follower yourself?

How did you get into fashion styling?

I started out as a personal stylist and started testing with various photographers. Everything else has been quite organic and my client list has grown each year through recommendations and requests.

Did you always want to work in fashion?

I’ve always been interested in fashion, but being from a small town I didn’t even know jobs like mine existed. Things have moved on a lot since then.

What has been your favourite assignment so far?

It’s too hard to pick a favourite. I love the variety of my job - it keeps it exciting. It’s nice to see the faces of my personal styling clients once they’ve had their transformation and it’s also amazing to do some cool fashion shoots with gorgeous models.

I love fashion, I always have. The shows are amazing and they give you a chance to see a full spectrum of fashion, from new designers to more established brands. Now they’re accessible to everyone through the internet.

Who is your favourite designer?

There are so many, it all depends what you're looking for. My personal favourites are Acne, Christopher Kane, Gareth Pugh and Burberry. All amazing designers but quite different in what they do. I always love Victoria Beckham’s collections and Erdem prints. Miu Miu is another all time favourite.

And your favourite high street brand?

The high street is amazing now but I’m not a fan of throwaway fashion. Classic staples that you can build upon are much better in the long run.

Zara do this really well.

It’s hard to generalise but be careful what trends you choose to follow and how you adapt them to your wardrobe.

Any top tips we can take on our next shopping trip?

Try things on and don’t be too concerned about the size you buy as long as it fits well. Many stores do vanity sizing, so you may be an 8 in one shop and a size 12 in another.

What advice would you give to anyone hoping for a career in the fashion industry?

Work hard and be patient! The fashion industry is tough and not all glitz and glamour so be prepared. And wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be on your feet a lot… obviously they still have to be fabulous, comfortable shoes.

What are your ambitions for the future?

To be successful at doing what I love.

Following on from the Gallery’s successful Victorian Stories exhibition in 2010, this is a chance to see Edwardian paintings from the Art Gallery collection alongside costume, objects and ephemera of the time from the Museum and Local Studies collections. This exhibition tells the story of the origins of the Co-operative Movement and how it started right here in Rochdale focusing on the lives of the local men who went on to become the Rochdale Pioneers.

It will also showcase the exciting plans for the £3 million extension of the historic Toad Lane’s Pioneer Museum which will reopen in time to celebrate 2012 as the Year of the Cooperatives.

Laura Ford uses soft materials, fabrics and found objects to create contemporary figurative sculptures which are often endearing, but somehow unnerving at the same time. This exhibition features three of Ford’s sculptures inspired by stories of exploration and adventure, in particular Robert Falcon Scott’s Antarctic expedition a century ago and the German artist Joseph Beuys’ story of surviving a WWII plane crash. The works are on loan from the Imogen and Elspeth Turner Collection.

This exhibition of contemporary work from the Art Gallery collection provides a counterpoint to the Edwardian paintings on display in Gallery Two, which themselves were contemporary when the Gallery opened in 1903 and was extended in 1912. It reflects the Gallery’s longstanding tradition of collecting and provides an opportunity to see more recent additions to the collection. Artists include Alan Birch, David Gledhill, Lubaina Himid, Vincent James, Susie MacMurray, Taslim Martin and Paul Rooney.

Every year on four days in September, Heritage Open Days celebrates England’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission.

Organised by Touchstones Rochdale This exhibition is a showcase for the Rochdale and Smocking Branches of the Embroiderers’ Guild showing a large collection of artworks produced with needles and thread. We think that we are ordinary people doing extraordinary work, but what do you think?

For many years the Friends have been helping the Art Gallery to conserve and acquire paintings for the collection.

Talks by invited speakers about art history and craft are held most months with the occasional trip to visit other art collections. On 12 June 2012 at 12.15pm Paul Talbot Greaves, a professional landscape painter and writer will demonstrate the painting of a watercolour; on 10 July 2012 Derek de Maine, an art historian with a wide knowledge of art and artists will speak about Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525-1569); on 14 August 2012 Donald Holden, a landscape artist and retired art teacher will talk about his work and show his attractive landscape paintings and samples of his cards.

THE BIG GAMES - FAMILY FUN EVENTS The BIG Games is a series of events boroughwide to mark this special year.

Taking place over four weekends in June and July, it is a collaboration with around fifty different clubs and groups who are taking part to provide a showcase of sports, arts and heritage with FREE taster sessions for all ages. Activities include everything from Archery to Zumba. Each centre has its own special activities with free swimming as well as indoor and outdoor sports including climbing, mountain biking, boxing, karate, tennis, basketball and a range of dance and aerobics sessions. There will be free goody bags for the first 500 to register on each day and spot prizes as well as the chance to win tickets for the London 2012 Football at Old Trafford in July. It’s a fantastic series of events and all free – come prepared to join in the fun.

THE BIG WATER FESTIVAL SUNDAY 3 JUNE 10AM-4PM HOLLINGWORTH LAKE The BIG Water Festival signals the start of the Rochdale Borough Big Games festival that runs in the borough from June to August. With the event centre based around Lakebank on Hollingworth Lake it takes place over the Diamond Jubilee weekend and if you can’t get to the Thames then celebrate it on one of the North West of England’s finest stretches of water instead.

Organised by Link4Life the day offers free and low cost taster sessions at Hollingworth Lake Water Activity Centre, Lakebank. A family day out for all ages – from age 4 upwards - you can fly across the lake on a windsurfer, paddle around the lake in a kayak, glide over the lake in a sailing boat and power through the lake in a rafted canoe.

All water sports sessions cost ÂŁ2 and run every hour on the hour. No equipment is needed (except for a towel and shoes to get wet) and are booked on the day. Free taster sessions on dry land include the Mountain Bike Shore Trax and Climbing Tower with additional face painting and balloon art.

Two of Great Britain’s historically strongest sports will also be showcased during the day with Open Days at neighbouring Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club and Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club. The training ground of current World Silver medal yachtsman and London 2012 Olympic hopeful Stuart Bithell, the Sailing Club will give an insight into what it takes to be an Olympic yachtsman with the chance to watch special races from the water as well as take a Clubhouse tour and enjoy panoramic views across the Lake. A low cost taster session on a Racing Dinghy is also available (bring waterproofs, shoes and towel and be prepared to get wet!). Providing 140 years of top class rowing, Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club will also be showing people around their boathouse and club and be running indoor rowing competitions all afternoon with refreshments available.

BIG DANCE WEEK 7-15 JULY 2012 - HEYWOOD CIVIC CENTRE BIG Dance Week is Rochdale borough’s celebration of this national dance festival with a week of free taster sessions and the chance to try a wide range of dance forms. This London 2012 Inspire Project is based around Heywood Civic Centre and is a celebration that involves local groups and dance schools with something for all ages.

The festival opens at Touchstones Rochdale Arts & Heritage Centre on Saturday 7 July at the launch event for ‘A Century Later’ an Inspire marked exhibition of contemporary art from the Rochdale borough collections.

It then moves to Heywood Civic Centre from Sunday 8th starting with an afternoon of ballroom and sequence dancing plus the launch of the new Sunday Night Dance Club with a lively night of dancing including Latin, Latin Line, French Jive, Rock n Roll, Argentine Tango and Disco.

The final weekend has a day of dance for all ages from 2 years upwards with free tasters running all day Saturday 14th from 11am-3.30pm and in the evening a ‘Glad Rags Ball’ with a sophisticated evening of ballroom and sequence with special guests. The festival ends with a ‘Strictly Over 35s Dance Night’ on Sunday 15th July with live music on stage from Johnny Sax and a special Kylie Minogue tribute.

LIGHT A LANTERN PARALYMPIC TORCH CELEBRATION FRIDAY 24 AUGUST 5.30PM-9.30PM - QUEEN’S PARK, HEYWOOD The BIG Games Paralympic Torch Event ‘Light a Lantern’ is Rochdale Borough’s local celebration event as part of the National Flame Celebrations to launch the Paralympic Games.

It takes place in Queen’s Park, Heywood starting at 5.30pm with sports taster sessions including cycling, angling, tennis, climbing, seated volleyball, rugby, football, bowling, orienteering and cricket. Live music will also feature as part of the event at the park’s bandstand culminating in the Light a Lantern parade at 8pm led by the Mayor of Rochdale and featuring groups who have participated in lantern making workshops at earlier Big Games events. Admission to the festival and its activities are free and open to all.

When it comes to statistics, much is written about fuel economy and the cost of road tax, but very little consideration is given to depreciation. This, in many cases, could be the costliest part of car ownership. So instead of looking at what proportion of its value a car retains, I present to you my top tips to avoid depreciation in the most important measure of them all, pound notes!

FIAT 500 That old perennial favourite of mine comes rolling on back as not only is it, in my opinion, the best supermini currently on sale but also, thanks to an army of loyal fans, retains its value on the secondhand market.

With a list price of £9,960 for a base model 1.2 pop, a quick look on the interweb reveals that the equivalent car, which is three years old car with 25,000 miles on the clock, is currently retailing around the £7,000 mark. Meaning that in three years, the local owner has only lost around £3,000.

Take it back to just a year old and the most any buyer is likely to lose is around £500.

BMW 1-Series If you need something a bit bigger than a 500, with a bit of brand prestige and room for a growing family, then the BMW 1-series might just be the car. It is also becoming remarkably good at retaining value, thanks to the BMW Efficient Dynamics technology.

This was the first system that really cracked the stop start technology, which cuts out the engine when stopped, which

combined with aerodynamic tweaks and low rolling resistance tyres makes the 1sereies the benchmark for fuel economy within its class.

Surprisingly, if you want to keep a car with the latest number plate on your drive the 1-series is looking favourite, as a 2011 model of the most popular 120d is currently selling for around £1,500 less than its asking price. Keeping up with the Jones’ has never been so cheap.

This is pretty typical of most sought after cars on the market with the Range Rover Evoque and even special edition MINI’s all on sale with one user on the log book for more than they cost in the dealerships, as impatient owners clamber to get the latest cars without waiting on an NHS-sized waiting list!

Gardening needn’t cost the earth. There are plenty of things that you can do for your garden just by using what’s lying around the house or with a few dirt-cheap purchases.

i Get composting. It’s the best way to improve the quality of your soil and get those flowers blooming...and it’s free. Find a suitable area and start piling organic material such as leaves, grass cuttings and food waste there, turning it once a week to aerate. i If there are some areas of your garden with poor soil that can’t be helped by compost, then plants like thyme, rosemary, lavender and other herbs can still flourish. i Use seeds rather than buying plants; seeds cost very little and you get the added pleasure of seeing something grow ‘from nothing’. Planting seeds can also be a great learning experience for children, especially the all-time favourite giant sunflowers! i Why not create a vegetable patch and grow your own vegetables, fruit and herbs. It’s healthier, tastes better than supermarket produce and only costs time and a little effort. If you don’t have a garden, just use a few 60

simple pots, window boxes or hanging baskets, from which you could easily grow a range of tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, herbs, radishes, baby carrots or dwarf beans to name a few. i Old biscuit tins and other food containers can make great plant pots; look around your home for suitable containers - don’t forget drainage holes! You can even decorate these yourself or leave this task to the younger members of the family. i Use rocks and pebbles you have gathered to add a new look to your garden, by placing them around the trees or bush areas. i Attract birds to your garden by leaving out seeds and creating a bird bath. The simplest bird bath is an old plant saucer with a stone in the middle. You could set several of these around your garden to find the most popular sites for your feathered friends.

LittLeBoroUgH’s new dining delight Review

On arrival at The Green Door, Rochdale’s newest restaurant, we were quickly greeted by a waitress, who ushered us to a relaxing sofa and promptly served our drinks while we perused the varied menu.

T

he restaurant offers traditional English dishes, without being too fussy and complicated. There are a variety of starters and main course options, ranging from pate or prawns with smoked salmon to something a little bit more adventurous.

The wine list is as well elevated as the food, with plenty of choice to compliment the varied menu. We opted for a very reasonably priced bottle of Furious Boar Zinfandel Californian Rose, which offered refreshing lashings of summer fruits.

Owner and Chef, Graham Sherwin, has made the former New Inn in Littleborough into a light and inviting restaurant, with plenty of room between tables. There were plenty of staff on hand and service was attentive without feeling rushed.

The restaurant is closed on Mondays and it is advisable to reserve a table if you’re planning to dine at the weekend.

The Rochdale, Oldham and Bury branch of the Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) confirmed the Baum Pub & Bistro on Toad lane, Rochdale, as the outright winner among the eight local pubs chosen to be named CAMRA's Greater Manchester Pub of The Year for 2012. The Baum will now compete against sixteen other regional winners to be named CAMRA National Pub Of The Year.

CAMRA believes that pubs remain important centres of community life, so pubs are marked against how inclusive they are, whether they support local events and sports teams and whether they give a sense of pub belonging to the people and the local community.

Steak may be popular, but it is not always cooked to everyone’s particular taste. My sirloin steak was succulent and exactly what medium rare should be. It was complimented with onion rings, mushroom, tomato and a selection of fresh vegetables.

My partner’s sea bass was delicious and held the flavour that this delicate silvery-skinned fish should. There was nothing overly fancy or fussy, just satisfying food, prepared by people who obviously care passionately about what they serve.

In April of this year, the Supreme Court decided in favour of workers who have died or are dying from exposure to asbestos, placing insurance liability from the time an employee first came into contact with the material and not when the symptoms appeared. The Supreme Court was asked to rule on the issue after some insurance companies refused to accept liability and lower courts failed to agree.

The decision means that insurers of numerous companies are open to claims for compensation from people whose family members have suffered from asbestos related diseases.

One of the diseases, Mesothelioma is a particular vicious form of terminal cancer that develops in the protective lining of the body’s internal organs, usually affecting the lungs or abdomen. Mesothelioma is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos, however, the signs and symptoms may not appear for many years after initial exposure. Unfortunately the survival rate is extremely poor, with around 75 per cent of sufferers dying within one year of diagnosis.

Many Rochdale workers have worked at sites in and around the area where asbestos was present and may have been exposed to the risk of contacting asbestos related diseases. The substance was found at the Ellenroad site and Rochdale was also the home of the Turner Brothers Asbestos factory (latterly Turner & Newall), which at one point was the world’s largest asbestos textile factory.

Peter Rhodes, Senior Partner at local Rochdale law firm Molesworths Bright Clegg who have recently negotiated a substantial settlement for a former Rochdale Council employee who worked at the Ellenroad site in 1986 said: "The judgement comes at a time when we are seeing a dramatic increase in people suffering from, or have had family members, suffer from this terrible disease. These people are not asbestos workers but just people going about their normal everyday jobs, like builders, electricians, plumbers and even teachers, who merely came into contact with asbestos products as a result of their work" Peter continued: "As our recent case demonstrates, the symptoms of Mesothelioma can take many years to materialise and although our client contracted the disease back in 1986 it was not until July 2010 that he consulted his doctor after he noticed abnormal abdominal swelling. He was referred to hospital and diagnosed with Mesothelioma of the peritoneum, which is the protective lining of the abdomen. At the time of his diagnosis he was 76 years old, his exposure having occurred some 24 years earlier when he would have been 52.

roYds oF roCHdaLe The Royds became bankers, canal petitioners and trustees of most of Rochdale’s Turnpike roads. Their wealth enabled them to buy land, build mansions, St Clements and St Edmunds Church and become traders, merchants and exporters.

Most people living in Rochdale will know Albert Royds Street and Clement Royds Street and quite possibly Royds Street, but who were the Royds?

The Royds have a rich tapestry of history when you look back in the archives of our town, becoming one of Rochdale’s leading families in the 19th century.

Local Author, Terry Whitworth, has written a very detailed history of the 18th and 19th century dynasty, which grew from farmerweavers, on the moors above Wardle, to become one of the town’s most prominent and wealthiest families.

‘The Royds of Rochdale’ is a comprehensive book, rich in photographs and maps, providing an enlightened journey into the rich history of the Royds family.

With our present lives ruled by the Bank of England’s decisions, it is interesting to read how, although best known in the woollen trade, there grew a line of Royds who took a failing banking business and made it one of the soundest banks in the country. Rochdale had its very own bank notes and, despite its demise, Royds Bank played an important part in the town’s history.

The Royds family also had wide associations with many properties in Rochdale. Greenhill was built by Thomas Royds, but was demolished in the 1930‘s and Rochdale High school for Girls was built on the site, which is now Falinge Park High School.

John Royds the son of James Royds of Deeplish Hill, also lived at Falinge Hall, which he bought in 1756 and named Old Falinge. The house at Falinge Fold has been kept in quite remarkable condition ever since.

‘The Royds of Rochdale’ also includes various pedigree charts, including surnames such as Fielden, Meadowcroft,

Holdsworth, Woolfenden, Greenwood etc.

touchstones Creative Writing group is offering any would-be or existing writers the chance to open up a whole new world of creative expression.

Discover how to bring words to life at these amusing and vibrant workshops, held on the first thursday of the month, 2.00pm at touchstones arts and heritage Centre.

Established three years ago, the group currently attracts around twenty-five people to the writing workshops, led by professional facilitator, Norman Warwick.

‘Touchstones, with its lively, modern interior and diverse, challenging exhibitions, lends a perfect ambience for creative writing,’ explained member Lorraine Charlesworth. She added, ‘Several of us have been published and we get our work out there to encourage others.

We enjoy strong partnerships, including those with our funders, Link4Life, and Rochdale Library Services, and with Rochdale’s spirit of co-operation in mind, we seek to engage our writing with all aspects of the arts.’

This year, already, members have performed in sell-out showcases for both Spiral Dance and Skylight Circus Arts, two other revenue-funded arts organisations making positive contributions to the borough. Members also

You’ve seen the weather forecast of dazzling sunshine, so out comes the BBQ only to find an hour later it’s pouring down with rain – this recipe works either way, over the hot BBQ coals or under a hot grill inside. So ditch the burger and cremated sausage and try this designer kebab instead, just make sure you don’t overcook as the scallops can turn rubbery.

MAKES 10 KEBABS 10 Bamboo kebab skewers 20 Baby onions peeled and blanched in hot water for 5 minutes 1 Bunch fresh basil 20 Small chestnut mushrooms 20 Small vine tomatoes cut in half 30 Queenie scallops – fresh rather than those frozen ones pumped with brine 4 tbsp olive oil 1 Sprig rosemary 1 Clove garlic Juice of ½ lemon METHOD 1) First soak the skewers in water for about 10 minutes – this prevents them from burning on the BBQ. 2) Take each item and place alternate pieces on each stick – for the basil just bend each leaf into quarters and spike with the skewer.

3) In a mini liquidiser blend together the rosemary, garlic and lemon and drizzle over each kebab – season heavily then place over the hot charcoals.

4) Leave for 2 minutes then turn and cook for a further 2 minutes. Do not over cook them, otherwise the scallops will toughen and go chewy.

5) Serve straight away with some nice mixed leaves and a light mayonnaise.

THE PRODUCERS

Heywood Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society Produced and directed by Jo Weetman

The Producers is an ambitious show for any society, but especially one that sets itself the challenge of designing and building their own scenery. It was clean and creative and worked really well with some effective lighting – the extension used for the office was a little tight on space but the performers made it work.

Director Jo Weetman chose a fine line up of principles and put them through their paces to pull the comedy out of this production, which is so often missed.

Terry Banham, as Max Bialystock, had the audience in the palm of his hand from the outset, with impeccable delivery and comic timing, especially his rendition of ‘Betrayed’.

Leo Bloom played by Liam Dodd was competent in the role and though didn’t quite have the same comic value as Terry they did work well together.

Elouise Drummond pulled out all the stops with her performance of Ulla who was sassy and sexy. With an ability to act, sing and dance brilliantly, I am certain this is the first of many leading roles for this young performer. This went up another notch when we met Paul Dawson who was a scream in the role of Franz - an outstanding performance!

Roger De Bris played by John Weetman and Martin White in the role of Carmen were a perfect couple. Keep it Gay was a definite highlight for me.

With the youngest line up of principles I’ve seen in The Producers, I knew it was going to be an interesting interpretation. I have to say it was one of the best productions of this show I have seen. It was slick, energetic and it really zipped along keeping the whole audience well entertained. The only area that lacked for me was the costumes, which needed much more attention to detail in terms of making it fit to the period. With so little else to criticise I must congratulate Heywood on a great production. n

Musical Director Julia Killick put together a superb band and kept the pace brilliantly and along with some excellent choreography, provided by Jill McIntosh, it really was a perfect combination.

LA TRAVIATA

Rochdale Phoenix Opera Society The Curtain Theatre, Rochdale

Producer - Peter Shellard, Musical - Director Jon Gibson

Due to the space available in this theatre, the orchestra were located in the wings to stage left, but were visible to the audience (depending on where you were sat in the theatre), so it was a pleasure to watch the musicians put through their paces with some beautiful playing and wonderful sweet tones.

This show was sung in English and divided into three acts. The sets looked lovely and the changes worked well. The props also worked well and were used with different covers in different scenes and the costumes were very in keeping with the period.

The principals did a great job, with Jane Hyde taking the role of Violetta and playing it beautifully, with the character’s change in

health along the way. Well done on the hair and make up changes in the different acts.

Alfredo was played by Robert Driver, who only a few days before had no voice at all, but performed with gusto and I’m sure the audience would never have known.

Flora Bervoix, played by Charlotte Exley, looked stunning, had lots of stage presence and a lovely voice to match. John Ramsdin played Giorgio Germont expertly with a wonderful tone and demeanour.

The smaller parts all worked hard to fulfil their roles and the real strength of this show was the collective voices of the whole cast who sounded wonderful and filled the auditorium. Jon Gibson should be very proud of his work, which paid off greatly.

Rochdale Phoenix Opera Society perform one show per year, rotating a programme of light opera, grand opera and Gilbert & Sullivan to an appreciative audience. This show was no exception, playing to an audience who enjoyed the show thoroughly. I had a lovely evening in the company of some very experienced and talented opera performers. SPRINGHILL HOSPICE NEWS Hospice at Home -

Ready, steady …go!

In the last edition of Style we announced the launch of our Hospice at Home service. We are pleased to say that the first nurses will be ready to go out into the community on 11th June. In addition to Hospice at Home, we will also be piloting a Hospice at Home Plus service, which will concentrate on a night sitting service.

Both of these services are designed with the patient in mind, and to work in collaboration with other service providers such as Macmillan and District Nurses.

GOLDEN TICkET BALL Christine Webb, who has been the Chief Executive at Springhill Hospice for over 15 years has decided to retire – early as she reminds everybody! There will be a number of events with Chris, who will be missed by all at Springhill, culminating in a Black Tie “Golden Ticket Ball” on Saturday 15th September.

SUMMER FAIR Our summer fair this year is on Sunday 8th July (apologies for the typo in the last edition). With over 40 stalls and attractions this will be a great day, with free entry for all!

Midnight Walk

Jubilee Events To round off your own week of Jubilee celebrations, we are hosting two events. On Saturday 9th June we are holding a Best of British Street Party in the Springhill Suite at Springhill Hospice. Tickets are just £15.00 each, including supper and music by Johnny Sax! We also have a Vintage Jubilee Afternoon Tea on Friday 8th June at Springhill Hospice, just £10.00 per person. All monies raised go to Springhill Hospice so please come and enjoy our events and support a very worthy cause!

Registration for our Midnight Walk on 14th July is now open, and this year we are letting the boys join in! Entry is £12 per person including a poncho, t-shirt, bacon butty and medal at the finish line! The 13k circular walk starts and finishes at Middleton Arena and is one of our most loved events – it is fun and an enjoyable evening/morning for all walkers. SOAP STARS ON THE BALL

Stars of Eastenders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and Waterloo Road recently took to the pitch to raise funds for Rochdale youngster Adam Kutereba.

The celebrity football match raised over £3000, which will go towards sending nine year old Adam, who has cerebral palsy, to America for life changing surgery.

The soap stars played a series of friendly 11-a-side football matches at Sacred Heart football ground in Rochdale. Famous faces included Danny Miller, best known for his role as Aaron Livesy in Emmerdale, Matt Lapinskas who played Anthony Moon in Eastenders and Shameless actor Elliott Tittensor. FEEL GOOD AT NEW CAFÉ The Feel Good Café has now opened its doors in Rochdale's new retail emporium, located above 25 Ten Boutique, on the corner of Yorkshire Street and Cheetham Street.

CHARITY FUNDRAISER NAMED WOMAN OF THE YEAR

Feel Good Café manager, Lindsay Wigglesworth said, "We offer a first class service and will be running various themes and events throughout the year, especially around the Feel Good Festival in August. Local business Brown’s Cakes are supplying our cakes and our fresh produce is sourced locally from Rochdale market. We are very much a community café and the response so far has been very positive.”

The Feel Good Café is open Mon-Sat 9am-4.30pm and serves hot and cold food, drinks and desserts.

To celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Feel Good Café is launching a traditional afternoon tea for 2 people. This includes a selection of sandwiches, homemade scones served with clotted or fresh cream & strawberry jam, a selection of cakes and a pot of tea (or coffee). Afternoon tea will be available daily after 2pm and will cost £15.95.

A fundraiser who has helped needy children in Eastern Europe for 17 years has been crowned the new Rochdale Woman of the Year. Carol Hartley received the award at a special luncheon at Rochdale Town Hall, which over 300 ladies attended.

Since 1995, Carol has been the co-ordinator of the Rochdale branch of the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child appeal, which sends shoeboxes full of goods to orphans in Belarus and other poor parts of the world. She also set up The Belarus Fund, helping orphaned children in Belarus.

ZEN INTERNET OPENS NEW DATA CENTRE Zen Internet, one of the UK’s leading independent Internet Service Providers (ISP), has recently opened its new purpose built data centre at its Rochdale headquarters.

The data centre was officially opened by the Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale, Councillor Alan Godson and Gillian Brown, who were joined at the event by Zen’s guests and colleagues for a presentation and tour of the new facility.

Zen is investing £4m in its new data centre as part of its continuous infrastructure development. The company was founded in Rochdale and has stayed firmly rooted in Rochdale where its heart lies, with nearly half of its employees living in the local area.

Organisers of the Rugby League World Cup 2013 have announced that the official mascot for the tournament will be designed by one lucky fan through a nationwide competition.

Each Rugby Leaque World Cup host will nominate a design from their area to go forward to the final judging panel. Then the best four designs will be chosen and displayed on the RLWC 2013 website. The public will then help to choose the winner with an online vote.

The closing date for entries is Friday 29th June, with the official

launch scheduled for October 2012.

Mark Widdup, Service Director at Rochdale Borough Council, said, “We’re proud to be hosting the Rugby League World Cup here in Rochdale and are encouraging as many young people as possible to submit a design.

Pupils from across the borough were buzzing after having the chance to become “Bee-fects” for the day.

More than 100 children gathered at St Mary's Church in the Baum, Rochdale, for an afternoon of bee related activities organised by the Manchester based Co-operative College.

The bee is the symbol of the Co-operative Movement and the day was organised to celebrate 2012 as the International Year of Co-operatives and Rochdale being the World Capital of Co-operatives.

The church became a hive of activity, as pupils dressed up as bees, played co-operative games, enjoyed honey tasting and learnt about how bees behave co-operatively.

Connor Widdup, 10, from Shawclough Primary in Rochdale, said: “It has been a really fun day and I’ve learnt lots about bees and working together.”
