Winter on Syke Moors by Mark Jolly
LITERATURE AND IDEAS DELIGHT AT ROCHDALE FESTIVAL
GIANT PEACH - James and the Giant Peach was brought to life at the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre.
IDEAS - Owen Jones at the Curtain Theatre, Rochdale.
LAUREN – Lauren Laverne broadcasts her BBC 6 Music show live from Rochdale Central Library with guests including festival director Punam Ramchurn.
POWER – Testament at Hopwood Hall College, Middleton.
Father and son poets Ian and Andrew McMillan performed with two choirs in the magnificent setting of the Church of St Mary in the Baum to bring the curtain down on a record-breaking Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival. Over the six-day festival thousands of people watched top literary names that included Jenny Eclair, Owen Jones, Simon Callow, Alastair Campbell, Mark Steel and Joanne Harris. More than 3,200 tickets were sold - the most in its four-year history – and more than 1,500 people attended un-ticketed events throughout the festival and earlier in October. The festival proved a big hit, across all ages, with sold out performances every day. The BBC’s 6 Music also broadcast live from the event, with presenter Lauren Laverne praising Rochdale’s regeneration ambitions and the festival. Political activist and author Owen Jones spoke for well over an hour to a capacity crowd at the Curtain Theatre, putting forward his passionate arguments for re-examining the British political system. One man human beatbox Testament took the crowd at Hopwood Hall College Theatre in Middleton on a journey of lyrical flavour. Multiple award winning crime authors Mark Billingham and John Connolly ‘In Conversation,’
chatted about their best-selling novels and the murky world of crime fiction, and the writer, communicator, commentator and strategist Alastair Campbell provided a fascinating look into his life in politics.
GLOBAL FUSION - African music, storytelling, spoken word and dance.
Comedians Mark Steel and Jenny Eclair performed hilarious and thought provoking shows at Middleton Arena. Chocolat author Joanne Harris MBE, and writer Elizabeth Chadwick were also big draws at the festival. A packed Roald Dahl-themed children’s programme saw scores of youngsters taking part in a trail around the town centre, and the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre hosted ‘Tales from the Giant Peach,’ with a giant inflatable and magical adventures. Playwright Ian Townsend, authors Nikesh Shukla and Ursula Holden Gill also made appearances, alongside Amani Creatives - a collective of artists who showcased African music, storytelling, spoken word and dance.
MUSIC - Poet Ian McMillan and his son Andrew, accompanied by two choirs.
DIARIES – Alastair Campbell at Number One Riverside, Rochdale.

ACTRESS ANNA FRIEL ROCHDALE-BORN ANNA, WHO RECENTLY CELEBRATED HER 40TH BIRTHDAY, FIRST SHOT TO FAME PLAYING BETH JORDACHE IN THE CHANNEL 4 SOAP, ‘BROOKSIDE’, IN THE EARLY ‘90S. Anna, who made her film debut in 1998 in ‘Land Girls’, moved to Hollywood and starred in the 2009 Will Ferrell film ‘Land of the Lost’, the Bradley Cooper thriller ‘Limitless’ and the ABC comedy series ‘Pushing Daisies’ for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award.

Anna is set to reprise her role as DS Marcella Backland, in ITV crime drama 'Marcella'
The National Television Award and Royal Television Society Awardwinner, recently won rave reviews for her latest role in the ITV crime drama ‘Marcella’ as DS Marcella Backland. The series proved so popular it is now being streamed worldwide on Netflix and has been commissioned for a second season. Anna will also be back on our screens in the spring, in Jimmy McGovern’s six-part BBC drama ‘Broken’, which also stars ‘Lord of the Rings’ actor Sean Bean. Style Magazine caught up with Miss Friel for an exclusive chat. Is the leading lady, who once used to party with Kate Moss and live in the Hollywood Hills, still a Rochdale girl at heart…? Firstly, and most importantly!… is there anything you miss about good old Rochdale? The people, mostly! I absolutely love the Lancashire spirit – everyone is so friendly and looks out for one another. There’s a real neighbourly vibe and I hope it never changes. I also miss all
the lovely memories of growing up there, especially all the beautiful walks but also really want to see all the recent work for the river reopening and medieval bridge. It sounds amazing! We noticed on the recent Celebrity Gogglebox that you still have a Rochdale twang! Has your daughter Gracie picked up the northern accent at all? Ha…. Do you think so? It’s something I’m very proud of and while it has definitely softened it’s something I never want to lose! Gracie’s accent, on the other hand, has changed over the years. She picked some Americanisms when we lived over there but she’s now at international school back in the UK and has ended up with a bit of a southern posh accent. At that age you are still so malleable and with my work commitments I’m never quite sure where we will end up, so who knows how it will evolve. But you’ll be pleased to know she still says bath, not barth. How did you first discover your acting talent? I’ve been acting since I was 13 years old – I secured my first role in the TV series ‘G.B.H’ and from that moment on knew that acting was what I wanted to do for
the rest of my life. I also owe a great deal of thanks to Oldham Theatre Workshop, whose wonderful training and classes provided me with a wealth of opportunities. How has filming been going for ‘Broken’? When will we catch you back on our screens? It has been going brilliantly. It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with the talents of Sean Bean and series creator Jimmy McGovern. I actually worked with Jimmy on the BBC One drama, ‘The Street’ so it was great to reunite with him. It’s also been a treat to be back up North! I’ve wrapped my parts, but production is still ongoing – ‘Broken’ should be hitting your screens in Spring 2017. Many of our readers have spent the past few months wondering what you were doing in that bath on Marcella! Will you be reprising your role soon? Marcella has been commissioned for a second season, so yes I’m delighted to be reprising the role! The script is not yet written but the bath scene will most likely be making a reappearance and all will become clear. We’re pencilled to... 5
wild. They are under unbelievable threat at the moment from Palm Oil developments and I want to do more to help. You juggle a non-stop acting career with family life, alongside a mountain of charity work… How on earth do you do it? I’m very lucky to be in the position that I am, and because of this I try to do what I can to give back. Charity work has always been very important to me, and my work as an ambassador has allowed me to experience some incredible things. And I still feel as though I have so much more to achieve. HOLLYOAKS NEWCOMER
BEN RYAN DAVIES Talented Rochdale actor Ben Ryan Davies has recently joined the cast of popular Channel Four soap, Hollyoaks. The 27-year-old, who has also starred in Waterloo Road, ITV crime drama Vera and BBC drama From There to Here, recently joined the soap as part of a serious storyline addressing the issues behind sexual consent. Find out how Ben is settling into life at Hollyoaks, how he got through his first day nerves, and what he’s hoping is under his Christmas tree this year‌! Image by Lukas Pi Photography 8
www.rochdalestyle.com
What would you love to work on in the future? Hmm that's a good question. I would love to do a film. What’s the best thing about Rochdale? Do you still live locally? I live in Liverpool now, so I'm close to work, but I come back to Rochdale regularly to see my family. The best thing about Rochdale is the people for me. Everyone from home has been very supportive of me and I really appreciate that. What advice would you give to young people hoping for an acting career? Ben Ryan Davies, as Ronan Burley, on Waterloo Road
Style Magazine: How did you first get into acting? Ben: I started acting in the musicals at my school, St Cuthbert's - the teachers there were brilliant and encouraged me every step of the way. I also went to acting classes outside of school with a local actor called Paul Oldham and he was instrumental in getting me my first agent. How would you describe your Hollyoaks character Nick Savage? Nick is a normal guy who people want to be friends with. He is impulsive and charming and he wouldn't be a Savage without being a bit of a hit with the ladies. However, he has boundary issues and the consequences of that have already had an effect on the village. You’re involved in the controversial sexual consent storyline at the moment – what reaction have you had from fans of the show? We've had a mixed reaction so far, with some fans of the show taking sides, which proves how important the storyline is in regards to views on consent.
Was it daunting joining the show back in August with such a dramatic storyline? What were your first thoughts when you read the script? Yes it was daunting!! My first day I swear I forgot how to walk and talk like a human being for most of it! Seeing people around like Jessica Fox (Nancy) or Nick Pickard (Tony) is almost normal now but at first it was very surreal.
I would say work hard and act as much as you can. Play different characters and don't be afraid. But most importantly… have fun! What do you want for Christmas this year? It's Christmas already?! Wow that came fast. I like baking and gadgets so some baking related gadgetry would be sweet!
I knew roughly what the storyline was going to be when I auditioned for the show. But from that meeting I knew it was a character I really wanted to play because he isn't a stereotypical 'soap villain' and reading the scripts was a pleasure because the writers knew my character. I'm always excited to open a new script to find out what's next for Nick! Did you research these issues before you began the storyline? Hollyoaks were brilliant in helping Sophie (Ellie) and I with our research. We Ben Ryan Davies with Hollyoaks went down to London to see a charity called co-star Sophie Porley The Mix who ran a sexual consent workshop with us which was very enlightening. We have also had conversations with Rape Crisis And finally, what will be your New on the issues surrounding consent and they Year’s resolution? were very helpful. Any clues as to what else is in store for Nick? I don't want to give too much away! But I can tell you that I end up getting involved with Holly and that is bound to raise some eyebrows in the village! What has been your favourite role so far in your career?
My New Year’s resolution is to become a morning person! I know it's a strange one but I like to make the most of my days, so I'm going to try my best to start getting up early and going to the gym before work rather than after. Ruth Meredith
I have been really lucky to play so many different characters so I don't really have one favourite role because there is always something different I like about each of them. www.rochdalestyle.com

PRIDE OF BRITAIN WINNER
KAREN JOHNSON
INSPIRATIONAL ROCHDALE FUNDRAISER, KAREN JOHNSON, RECENTLY WON A PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL PRIDE OF BRITAIN AWARD. KAREN WAS PRESENTED WITH THE AWARD BY NONE OTHER THAN TAKE THAT, AT THE STAR-STUDDED AWARDS CEREMONY IN LONDON, AT THE END OF OCTOBER. Tragically, Karen lost both of her sons - when they were just 12 years old - to the rare genetic disorder, Hunter Syndrome. She began fundraising for research into genetic disorders, and continued despite her daughter Katie being diagnosed with Leukaemia. Karen’s charity, the GEM Appeal, supported by many local people and businesses, has now raised a staggering £2.6 million for both research and treatment machines at Manchester Children’s Hospital. It is the second year in a row the 57-year-old has been recognised by the awards. In 2015 she received a regional fundraising accolade, and this time, she has been given the national Special Recognition award, which recognises heroes who go the extra mile for their cause.

Karen travelled to the capital for the ceremony with husband, Pete, and enjoyed a meeting with Prime Minister, Theresa May, dinner with TV presenter Carol Vorderman, a VIP trip on the London Eye and hotel stay as part of her prize. Daughter Katie also joined the couple for the glamorous awards ceremony.
We hear Take That have agreed to turn up to one of your future events? When I was on stage I asked Take That if they would do something for The GEM Appeal and they agreed. I don't know yet what that will be, I'm waiting to hear what they come up with... exciting! Did you enjoy your trip to London? The trip to London was fabulous. We were
Style caught up with Karen to discuss her prestigious accolade and what’s next for the much-loved Rochdale charity… How did it feel to be told you had won the award? Winning the award was amazing. After getting the ITV Granada regional winner last year I never imagined I would get a National award. I am delighted and honoured to receive this award and am proud that it recognises all of the hard work done by The GEM Appeal. Were you nervous going up on stage? Yes, I was nervous going up in front of all the people there and the TV audience, but more concerned that I might fall off my shoes!! Did you watch it on television? Yes I couldn't wait to see it on TV when I got home. Some special friends came round and watched it with us and I cried at seeing myself so upset! I've watched it loads of times since and cry every time! Who were you most excited to meet at the awards ceremony? Oh my goodness... meeting Take That was amazing but this was on top of meeting all of the other people who were there. It was surreal to be sat in close proximity to stars

money raised by The GEM Appeal. Some children are enjoying a happy, relatively normal life, which was unheard of before the charity existed. You have faced such unimaginable loss and yet found the strength to get through it, and put all your energy into The GEM Appeal. Many readers and Pride of Britain viewers will probably be wondering how you do it? Through the years I have channelled all of my sorrow, grief, and anger at the illness that robbed me of my beautiful sons and turned it into something positive. I have been blessed with some amazing friends and family - the GEM Appeal committee and Trustees who, through the years have worked so hard to raise money and make the charity the success it has become. These people have kept me sane and been the solid base that has made this all possible. Having won the top award and raised £2.6 million, what are your future goals for the charity? The future goals are to keep fundraising, to promote awareness and to one day find a cure that will relegate these horrific diseases into the history books where they belong.
What difference has the GEM Appeal made to research into Genetic Metabolic disorders? The GEM Appeal has been the driving force behind the funding of the research into these rare disorders in children and young people. Without this funding, the treatment available nowadays would not be there. Children's lives are improved and extended because of Karen with husband Pete and daughter Katie
How can people get involved in helping the GEM Appeal? People can help by checking out our website www.gemappeal.org.uk - and coming along to any of our functions, organising their own fundraising events or donating via our JustGiving page. We also have a Facebook page and a Twitter account where people can get involved. Karen with Take That and her Pride of Britain award

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDESS: MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT IN 2017 While many of us might feel too stressed to worry about helping others, or say we’ll do a good deed when we have more ‘spare time’, evidence shows that helping others is actually beneficial for our own mental health and wellbeing. It can help reduce stress, improve emotional wellbeing and even benefit our physical health. We’ve put together a few ideas on how you can make a positive impact in 2017 and spread a little community spirit and friendship; simple steps that will help you to put a smile on someone’s face (and hopefully yours at the same time!). Always remember… kindness is contagious.
OFFER AN UNEXPECTED SMILE. It’s free, simple and could change someone’s day. In fact, many people mirror other people instinctively, and if you offer a smile they may well smile back. And we all know that a smile can make us feel better, no matter what kind of mood we are in. Many of us are constantly connected to our phones and social media these days, but are we losing real human connection? The biggest ever eye contact experiment recently took place in cities and towns worldwide, aiming to question just that. People were asked to simply share a minute’s eye contact with strangers, with over 100,000 people taking part. The experiment aimed to prove that beyond our differences there is a shared love and humanity between us all and that we should make ourselves more aware of the people around us. For more information visit www.eyecontactexperiment.com.
DECLUTTER AND DONATE It’s almost the start of a new year and the perfect time to have a clear out of any old or unwanted items. But don’t just ditch them! Drop them off at one of the many local charity shops such as Springhill Hospice, Rochdale RSPCA or Petrus, who can use them to raise much-needed funds.

BRING FRIENDSHIP INTO THE LIVES OF LOCAL OLDER PEOPLE.
HELP ROUGH SLEEPERS THIS WINTER. Homelessness rates have risen dramatically, with rough sleeping doubling since 2010 and increasing by 30% in the last year, leaving lots of people at risk, especially in cold weather. Contact the Elderly organises free, monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for people aged 75 or over who live alone. The tea parties help older people make friends in their community, enjoy a chat with others and have something to look forward to.
HELP LOCAL FAMILIES IN CRISIS. Rochdale Foodbank are in desperate need of donations all year round. The volunteers provide 3+ days of food to around 280-300 local families every month. To meet the demand each month they need around four tonnes of food, worth around £6000. In the four years the food bank has been running they have fed 28,000 individuals including 10,000 children.

COOKING WITH THE
TOM MC
BEST E VE R BU TTER CHICKE N
This is one of those recipes that, once you've made it for yourself, will make you wonder why you've been buying takeaways for so long - it’s simple comfort food with a little chilli heat in the background. The ground almond gives it this dreamy nuttiness that makes this a great curry for ‘people who don’t do curries’. INGREDIENTS: (SERVES 2) 2 chicken breasts, each in 4-5 large chunks MARINADE: 100ml natural yoghurt 1 tbsp ground coriander 1 tsp garlic puree Pinch of salt
1 tsp ground turmeric 1 tsp garam masala Juice of 1/2 lemon
SAUCE: 2 heaped tbsp unsalted butter 1 large onion, finely diced 2 garlic cloves, finely diced 1 red chilli, finely diced 1 tbsp honey 1 tbsp tomato puree 1 tsp chilli powder 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp ground almonds 200ml double cream 2 large tomatoes, cores removed, finely chopped 20

METHOD Get yourself a big bowl and mix all of the marinade ingredients together. Throw in your chicken chunks and give them a good mix with your hands until they're completely covered. Thread your chicken onto skewers. Lay your skewers on a plate, spoon over any remaining marinade, cover and pop into the fridge. You could leave these for as little as an hour and they’d do the trick, but give them overnight and you’ll thank me. Once it’s time to cook your curry, turn your grill to medium/high and arrange your skewers on a baking tray, ready to go under later. Get a decent sized saucepan and throw it on a medium heat, lob in a tablespoon of butter and a little oil. Once the butter has melted add in your onions, chillies, garlic and ginger. Keep this moving over a medium heat, for five minutes or so, stirring it with a wooden spoon. About this time you can put your chicken under the grill - keep an eye on it and turn it once it starts to get that wonderful char on the outside (this is a great job for whichever lucky person you’re making this curry for). Back to your saucepan - add in your diced tomatoes, honey, tomato puree, chilli power, paprika and ground almonds. It’s all going to look a little ugly at this point but stick with me. Keep this mix moving with your wooden spoon again - after about five minutes you should have an incredible smelling red paste. Check on your chicken now - carefully cut one piece down the the skewer to make sure it’s cooked all the way through. Once you're sure it is, you can either add it into your saucepan or leave them on the skewers to serve. Now, finally, add into your saucepan the last of your butter and the double cream (I never promised it would be the healthiest of dishes, but as a treat this is something really special), give it a good stir and cook for three minutes until it all combines together. Serve with just a little sliced tomato & onion and some naan bread or pilau rice. Awesome.

LAMB SHANK HO TP OT METHOD: In a saucepan, warm a little oil over a medium heat, add your onions and garlic, for a few minutes. Once the onion and garlic have softened a little, transfer them into a casserole dish (with matching lid) - pop your saucepan back on the heat and add a little more oil. Dust all sides of your shanks with flour and season with salt and pepper, then carefully seal them off in your saucepan on all sides. Transfer these into your casserole dish too, sitting them nicely with the bones pointing upwards. Throw in a couple of springs of thyme and rosemary, mint sauce and Bovril, then cover with warm water, pop the lid on and place on the middle shelf of a preheated oven, on about 180ºc, for an hour and a half. While that’s doing it’s thing, get all of your diced up vegetables mixed together, season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Pull your casserole dish out of the oven, carefully lift the lid off, watching out for the steam. Safe to say, at this point your kitchen is going to smell fantastic - while the dish is out whack your oven up to about 230ºc. Pour in your diced vegetables, arrange them around the bones of the shanks, press them down a little, then

ESTATE OF THE NATION
Many of us will have happy memories of family holidays, where half the inventory of the household was crammed into the daily family conveyance and after several fights with our siblings, endless rounds of eye-spy and, if you were lucky, lunch at a Little Chef, you arrived at the seaside or cottage in the country. If you were very lucky, your family either owned or had access to an estate bodied car. In recent times however, the trusty family estate has been sidelined by the more utilitarian MPV or glamorous SUV, but there are still some excellent load-luggers out there throughout the price range. FIAT TIPO ESTATE
FIAT has quite a habit of reusing names and whilst the previous Tipo last around in the mid 90’s - may have faded from memory, it was quite a decent car. It had plenty of room inside and shared some of its underpinnings with the sporty Lancia Delta. This latest incarnation is designed to sit at the economy end of the market, however, even the base model in the
24
www.rochdalestyle.com
range comes with a DAB compatible media centre with Bluetooth capability built in, roof bars, all around electric windows and split fold rear seats that seem to be disappearing gradually from other models. But the main point of an estate is load space and this is where the Tipo excels. With the rear seats up, the Tipo boats 550 litres of storage space, compared to the 540 litres of the
comparable Vauxhall Astra and 476 litres in the Ford Focus. Prices start from £12,835 for the base model and to get value it’s advisable to keep the trim simple.
KIA OPTIMA ESTATE
Whenever anyone asks me to recommend them a car I generally answer with whatever the most compatible Kia is. The reasoning being
the warranty they offer. This means if friends and family buy a car and then have a major issue after six or so months, then it is covered and not my fault for not foreseeing the issue.
These days it seems the phrase is a bit old hat and when Kia unveiled their new family load-lugger, it was termed a ‘Sports Wagon’ instead. Whilst fashion hasn’t complete taken over function in the design of the Optima SW it has definitely left its mark - the curved body means that the boot isn’t perhaps as big as it could be, but the lines and aggressive stance will appeal to buyers that want plenty of space, whilst still receiving admiring glances from fellow motorists. Inside, the dash has that feel we
AUDI RS6 AVANT
Within any person is usually a child wanting to get out and that is basically the best way to sum up the RS6. To the casual observer it is a large, upmarket estate car perfect for a family with large dogs, under the skin however lurks a 4.0 V8 engine that churns out 552bhp. In the sprint to 60mph, the Audi can get there in 3.9 seconds, just 0.2 seconds
behind the Ferrari 458. Not bad for a car weighing in at a shade under two tonnes unladen. Top speed is limited to 155mph but a source at Audi once told me that
have come to expect from Kia plenty of soft touch materials along with the high tech dash, dominated by the touchscreen. Out on the road the Optima SW feels planted and comfortable, and as one would expect, the interior is peaceful and serene when cruising in the outside lane of the motorway. The Optima SW really shows how far Kia has come and why they have caused more than a few sleepless nights for brands that are currently perceived as more premium. 200mph is achievable if the electronic nanny is distracted. Out on the road I was a bit underwhelmed though. Tootling around town I could have been driving any of the other two cars mentioned here - it is perfectly civilised and there are only discreet visual clues on the body that distinguish the car from a standard A6 Avant. There is no loud garble from the exhaust or any dramatic tyre squeal when setting off, thanks to the legendary Quattro 4-wheel drive system. But once unleashed, the RS6 becomes a different beast and almost as much fun as the aforementioned Ferrari - any cargo in the rear will need to be well secured, as the laws of centrifugal force will take effect on any luggage, long before it overcomes the amazing grip of the Audi once the going gets twisty. GRACIE FIELDS STATUE UNVEILED IN HER HOMETOWN OF ROCHDALE
Roy Hudd with actress Sue Devaney who played Gracie in the Oldham Coliseum production, Our Gracie - image by Alan Hamer.
Showbiz legend Roy Hudd took a break from filming the latest series of Broadchurch to unveil a statue of his late friend and fellow star, Dame Gracie Fields, in Rochdale. The sculpt, believed to be the first statue of a woman to be erected in Greater Manchester for more than 100 years, was unveiled outside Rochdale’s Grade I listed town hall, where Gracie often performed to the crowds on her many return visits to the town. Born above a chippy in Rochdale in 1898, Gracie went on to become the highest paid actress in the world in the 1930s and also enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a singer and comedian. Roy Hudd (80), who celebrates 55 years in showbiz this year, once shared an agent

(Morris Aza) with Gracie and he often visited her on the Italian island of Capri, where she lived for a number of years. The comedian, actor, radio host and author is currently filming the next series of Broadchurch, in which he plays David Bennett, father to Olivia Colman’s Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller.
Crowds gathered for the unveiling of the statue
He said: “I’ve actually taken leave from filming Broadchurch to be here, as I just couldn’t have missed this. Gracie meant a great deal to me and it’s a very emotional today I can tell you. Gracie and Frank Sinatra were the two greatest singers of all time for me. There was just no comparison. She could take an ordinary song and turn it into something spectacular. She was a great actress and she told a story with her music. The statue is just her. She could sing everything; opera, comedy and ballads, and it’s all in that pose.” The statue was created by Sean Hedges Quinn, who has also sculpted other well-known figures, including Sir Bobby Robson and Captain Mainwaring (Arthur Lowe), of Dad’s Army fame. Its installation comes amid a public debate on the lack of statues marking the achievements of famous women. Last year, the public were asked to select one of six legendary women to be immortalised in Manchester, after a councillor highlighted that the last statue of a woman to be erected in the city was of Queen Victoria, more than a century ago. Also present at the unveiling was Gracie’s niece, Melanie Stansfield, who said: “It’s just fabulous that this statue has been erected and it’s wonderful to see the warm reception it’s been given by all the public who turned out to see it. "Gracie was aware of the power of her music and the way it lifted people up, particularly during the depression years. That’s why she entertained the troops with my father during the war. She loved Rochdale and felt very connected to her fans. She saw it as her job to put a smile on people’s faces and she’s still doing that today, nearly 40 years after her death.” Rochdale Borough Council, The Rotary Club of Rochdale East and the Gracie Fields Appreciation Society worked together to bring the statue to Rochdale, with funding from Grantscape and developer contributions.

JESSIE FOTHERGILL
LITTLEBOROUGH’S LITERARY LADY
Most people in Rochdale
associate the name Fothergill
with the famous group of
companies whose headquarters dominate the banks of the
Rochdale Canal between
Littleborough and Summit. Jessie Fothergill was the
daughter of Thomas Fothergill who, along with Alexander
Harvey, set up their firm in 1847. A blue plaque on the wall of
Sladen Wood Mill on Todmorden
Road commemorates this
literary lady. But who was she?
Jessie Fothergill was born in Manchester in 1851, before moving to Bowdon, a suburb of Altrincham. After her father's death in 1866, Jessie and her family moved to Littleborough where they lived at Sladen Wood House, Summit, overlooking both the canal and the western portal of the Summit Tunnel. This house was later the home of Gordon Harvey and his brother Ernst. Sadly, the house was demolished a long time ago. 28
www.rochdalestyle.com
Jessie was living in the USA, staying in a mountain resort in Pennsylvania for a whole year. She seems to have suffered from a chronic lung condition for most of her life and this may have been the reason why Jessie spent so many winters abroad, seeking a milder climate. Jessie died suddenly in the town of Berne in Switzerland on July 28th 1891, aged only 40. Her body was buried there.
Jessie settled well into the Littleborough area, loving the surrounding hills and the people who lived in the ‘thickly populated districts of the valleys below’. She visited local residents, befriending them and clearly gathering useful material for her writing. Her novel ‘Healey - A Romance’ is set in the Rochdale area and - like Thomas Hardy's Wessex - Jessie uses fictional names for actual places. ‘Thansthorpe’ is Rochdale which she describes as ‘… a hideous town through which flows the
river Thanse, a dark and polluted stream, whose evil odour betrays its evil nature’. Little did she know that 140 years later, the river has again become the centre of our town, but in such a positive way! ‘Hamerton’ is Littleborough and there is a clear description of Holy Trinity Church and local roads. ‘Healey’ itself is not the area
to the north of Rochdale that we know, but an area of coal-pits in Littleborough. A later novel, Probation, also featured ‘Thansthorpe’ and ‘Hamerton’ and gives a lively picture of the hard lives of workers in the area. There are powerful descriptions of ‘the wild and desolate moors’ around Littleborough. With both novels, the reader will inevitably become something of an amateur detective, trying to work out the real location of such thinly disguised names as ‘Blake Street’, ‘Townfield’ and the ‘Blackrigg Moors’. Jessie began writing her third novel, The First Violin, in Düsseldorf in Germany, where she spent 15 months with her sister and two friends. This novel, originally published anonymously, was a great success and swiftly reprinted only two months later. Jessie's success also led to her earlier novels being reissued for readers eager to read more of her writing. Over the next 16 years Jessie wrote no less than thirteen novels. The 1881 census saw the family back in Manchester where Jessie is listed as ‘Writer Of Fiction’. Three years later,
If Haworth has the Bronte sisters and Manchester has Elizabeth Gaskell, perhaps now is the time for Rochdale to take more pride in our own Victorian woman writer. Certainly, Jessie was known to be an admirer of these more celebrated novelists, but her books are important in their own right. The Spectator magazine in 1882 favourably compared Jessie's novel, Kith And Kin, to Jane Eyre. When I read The First Violin myself, the book reminded me of Charlotte Bronte's Vilette; both novels have a foreign setting and intense relationships. There are original copies of some of Jessie's novels in Rochdale Local Studies, which are available to look at on request. Happily, information technology has helped readers to rediscover many of these neglected novels. Print on demand and e-books mean that publishers can reissue such works without the risk of great expense. Leopold Classic Library and Forgotten Books have both recently published many of Jessie's novels. The First Violin is even available for free on Kindle so why are you are waiting? I believe that all that Jessie Fothergill needs is a mention in the media by a famous writer and suddenly she could be back in the public eye. Hopefully, this article will encourage Style readers to search out the novels of Jessie Fothergill, as I have done. It is well worth it. Richard Lysons Thanks to Jenny Driver

FIVE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS (…& HOW TO STICK TO THEM!) Christmas is almost upon us and the end of 2016 rapidly approaching, which leads us to look back and evaluate our choices and achievements – or lack of them – over the year. New Year’s resolutions are the perfect opportunity to remedy any missed opportunities and stimulate the changes we would like to make to improve our lives. A new year brings a fresh start (yes it’s a cliché, but it’s true!) so here at Style we’ve come up with a few suggestions to boost your happiness and make changes that will impact your life positively, changes which hopefully aren’t too difficult to stick to.
1
GET IN SHAPE: Top of the list, this has to be the most commonly made resolution. It doesn’t necessarily mean eating
lettuce for the rest of your life, but adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet and moving around more – even going for a stroll around the park in your lunch hour – will benefit your physical and mental health. Buddy up with a friend, make a pact to start badminton a couple of times a week, or walk the dogs every other day - find ways to make exercise fun as well as good for you. And
you’re eating - if you fancy a chocolate bar, have a

3
MEET NEW PEOPLE: When we get stuck in a rut, we usually end up staying at home most of the time, missing out on a lot of interesting
opportunities for networking and having fun. Meeting new people can be beneficial to your mental well-being and help your career, so don’t be afraid to get out there. Enrol for a college course, learn a language, join a book club, take up a sport, volunteer – all offer an easy way to encounter new people outside your usual social circle and allow you to overcome any shyness you might feel. Equally, it’s just as important to maintain and nurture the relationships you already have, so set aside a night each month for Date Night, or Girls/Boys Night, and schedule family time a couple of times a week by eating tea at the table. This is definitely the most fun resolution, which should mean it is the easiest one to keep!
4
TRAVEL MORE: Write a list of all the places you want to go, some home, some abroad, and promise yourself you’ll visit at least one this year, and one next year, and so on, until you’ve visited them all. The
saying goes that travel broadens the mind, and your list will make sure you save up and plan for your trip to your dream destination instead of blowing your money on yet another pair of boots, so you can feel doubly virtuous while making your memories in an exciting, exotic location.
5
GET MORE QUALITY SLEEP: Baudrillard called it a ‘delirium of communication’, which in layman’s terms means that we are constantly connected to
something, be it our 50-inch TV, car radio, computers, smartphones, tablets or any other kind of gadgets with glowing lights and beeping alerts. New Year!
New You! Upgrading your beauty routine is easy and achievable… I promise! Here are a few simple, everyday changes you can make, which will help you to look and feel your best, all year through. PUT YOUR HANDBAG TO GOOD USE!
We carry our handbags around daily, but are they really filled with the items we need? Why not include a few essential items that really come to your rescue and serve a purpose… My first handbag essential is the brand new mineral nail file by Micro Cell - a particularly high quality precision file for shortening, smoothing and sealing. This file is indestructible and can even file nails with gel polish without damaging them. It even comes in a pretty diamante studded case and is super slim and sleek to slide into a handbag of any size. So stop picking at your nails and catch a small nick in the nail before it progresses into a split – resulting in beautiful nails day in, day out. We are all guilty of getting a spot or blemish and picking it! We know we should leave them but we don’t. Having a blemish stick to hand in your handbag would stop you from picking the spot or blemish, potentially spreading the bacteria and causing a further breakout. With the use of a handy blemish stick, you can half the life cycle of your blemishes, reduce redness and swelling, and kill bacteria – what more could we ask for? I would recommend ‘Austrailian Bodycares Blemish Stick with Tea Tree and Witch Hazel’ - this gives a double action with these two spot fighting ingredients and it retails at a very affordable £5.99. My all time favourite handbag essential is SOS Anytime balm - it comes everywhere with me! Use it for all ailments and skin conditions such as cuts, bruises, dry cracked skin, eczema or psoriasis or as a hand & nail cream. It's great for all
the family, even on toddlers and children aged over 1. This super versatile product retails at just £13.50.
WEAR SUN PROTECTION… Sunscreen isn’t just for for trips to the beach or exotic getaways. The sun and its harmful rays are in the air every day, during any season of the year, even when it’s cloudy. The only way to protect our skin from harmful rays and prevent skin damage, premature ageing, dark spots, excess pigment and cancer is to wear an SPF 30, or even better, SPF 50 sunscreen. I recently discovered Soliel Plasir by Darphin, an exquisitely silken cream which helps prevent skin damage, lines, wrinkles and dark spots, while the precise blending of precious Karanja oil, and skin texturizing Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin E leave skin smooth and youthfully glowing. It is, unlike many standard sunscreen products, an absolute pleasure to wear, and feels and smells like a beautiful indulgent face cream. Retails at £29.00 - available for face or body.
START A PROPER SKIN ROUTINE… Having a glowing healthy complexion makes us feel great, inside and out. It gives us confidence to perform better in our day-to-day lives and using beautiful products means applying skincare isn’t a chore - it becomes a relaxing and indulgent time for us to take time out for a couple of minutes, in the morning and evening. Great skincare can restore and rebalance, not only your skin, but your wellbeing on the whole. A skin analysis with a qualified beauty therapist can give you all the information and recommendations you need to start your skincare routine with the correct products for your skin type. The professionals at The Retreat would like to offer a complimentary skin analysis for every reader – just mention ‘Style Magazine’ when booking and immerse yourself in the delectable world of Darphin.

WALKING WITH THE PIONEERS A CRISP, AUTUMNAL DAY PROVIDED THE PERFECT AFTERNOON FOR THE PIONEER GRAVE WALK. Located in Rochdale Cemetery on Bury Road are the seventeen graves of the men who founded the Co-operative Movement. With an informative booklet obtained from Touchstones we set about locating these graves. It could not have been easier. All the graves are marked by a plaque located on the ground to guide you in the right direction of each of the graves and so, along with the booklet, we were able to locate and learn about each of the Pioneers. Should you prefer, guided tours are available. From a vacant shop, on Toad Lane, these Pioneers proposed to make food affordable

John Hill borrowed the wheelbarrow and William Cooper worked to abolish slavery, refusing a wage until the society was able to afford it. All have fascinating stories. Clare Hirst and her team at the Toad Lane museum kindly provided information about the Pioneer Grave Walk. It was the late Dorothy Greaves, a Co-op historian, who compiled a list of graves and the history of each occupant. This forms the content of the booklet which was funded and printed by Rochdale Council. In 1993, Co-operative Funeralcare cleaned and tidied the graves, and again in 2012, when the marker plaques were added. The

ROCHDALE RSPCA NEWS & EVENTS
RSPCA Rochdale & District Branch Registered Charity no. 232257
Where would we be without the RSPCA? The facts are fascinating. Last year alone, the society received over 1.4million calls reporting cruelty or seeking advice, 128,269 animals were rescued from cruelty, 16,616 wildlife casualties were cared for and released, 179,613 animals were treated, more than 87,000 animals were neutered and a further 55,000 were microchipped. The RSPCA prosecuted over 1,400 people for serious cruelty and issued more than 80,000 improvement notices, acting on behalf of all those good people who believe animals deserve compassion and respect. Rochdale Animal Centre is one of 41 branch centres which support the work of the RSPCA in their local area. May 2016 saw the 10th anniversary of the reopening of the Rochdale Animal Centre. Since that day in May 2006, they have rescued and rehomed nearly 4,000 animals. This is an impressive figure by any measure, but it is also a sad figure, as most of these animals will have been rescued from terrible conditions, or been abused or abandoned. Rochdale RSPCA have also micro-chipped 5,000 animals in that time. The RSPCA encourage every pet owner to have their pet microchipped - it has proved invaluable in uniting lost pets with their owners. Pop into the animal centre during opening hours, no appointment is necessary.

HOW YOU CAN HELP SUPPORT RSPCA ROCHDALE The work of the animal centre will carry on as long as they have the support of the good people of Rochdale & District. They receive no government funding and the money raised comes either through donations, from sales in the charity shops or legacies.
WHAT’S IN STORE FOR 2017?
Check out the Facebook pages for more information, they are ‘RSPCA Rochdale Animal Centre’ and the new ‘RSPCA Rochdale Shops and Ebay’ which is a separate page advertising items for sale and where you can keep up to date with news and events.
For 2017, RSPCA Rochdale have exciting plans to increase their ability to help dogs, with more dogs available for adoption. With the support of Rochdale Council, they will provide a secure grassed exercise area and offer dog training and agility classes to help owners enjoy their dogs in a responsible way. They will also improve car parking on the land adjacent to the animal centre and will shortly be moving forward with plans to build six high quality kennels within the existing building.
If you love animals, why not volunteer at the animal centre, in one of the charity shops or run your own fundraising event. The ladies of the ‘Just For Fun Line Dancers’ in Norden recently raised over £300 at their social evening in November.
The Trustees and staff from RSPCA Rochdale would like to thank all their members, Friends, volunteers and others who have supported their work during 2016 and wish you all a Merry Christmas.

THEATRE REVIEW: The Vicar of Dibley 19th Oct – 22nd Oct 2016
Bringing a TV show to the stage has its problems, yet The Mad Theatre Company managed to pull it off with some strong performances, taking on characters we all know so well. The production included three staged mini episodes of the sitcom which were familiar to the audience making it an even tougher challenge for the cast. Wearing my critics hat, I found the many scene changes slowed the production down which is one of the problems that occurs when bringing a television sitcom to the stage.
There were strong performances from everyone in each of the episodes, who managed to portray, not just the characters, but also the relationships between them. Standing out for me, with a very polished performance and characterisation, was Amy Louise Gilmore taking on the role of dipsy Alice Tinker. She was strongly supported by Lynda Kent as Vicar Geraldine Granger and the very strong cast included four children from Moorhouse Primary School contributing to a a great evening’s entertainment. THEATRE REVIEW: Out of Order 1st Nov - 4th Nov 2016
This marked a debut for young Elizabeth Gratton as the secretary which she portrayed with great confidence. The pair then find a dead body in their posh London hotel suite, and Willey calls on his ingenuity and his hapless parliamentary private secretary, George Pigden, to avoid a political scandal. Dave Stopford captured the character of George with great timing and vulnerability when forced into many a corner. With the hotel’s supercilious manager played by Tim Keiley, and a money grabbing waiter played by Clive Hartley, they helped keep up the pace in this production.
St Ann’s Players productions very rarely disappoint, and their latest

GOOD FOOD GUIDE REVIEW: ‘TRUE TASTE OF INDIA’ TANDOORI RESTAURANT
How often do you decide to go out for an Indian meal and then always order your favourite dish? I am a little bit guilty of this myself, so choosing to dine for the first time at The Taste Of India in Norden, Rochdale, both my partner and I decided to be adventurous and try something new.
We consulted the waiter and he recommended two excellent dishes. After our usual favourite of Papadums and pickles we shared a mixed starter of Chicken Kebab, Sheek Kebab, Chicken Tikka and Lamb Tikka and a Vegetarian Mixed Starter of Samosa, Onion Bhajis and Aloo Pakora. They were both substantial, leaving us wondering if we were going to have room for our recommended main courses. I went for King Prawn Rangila which was really tasty without too much spice and consisted of large king prawns marinated in a tikka sauce cooked in a tandoori oven, lightly buttered and served with garlic rice and orange butter sauce. My partner decided on Sylhet
fish – delicious boneless fish, pan fried and cooked with potatoes - a popular dish in the Sylet district of Bangladesh. There was a great choice of desserts but we found it was time for the bill as we had done the usual thing of eating too much! If you are a lover of Indian food then I would recommend you put this intimate restaurant in Norden on your wish list. We had passed it many times and never ventured through the door, but Golam and his team made us feel very welcome. 673 Edenfield Road, Norden, Rochdale, OL11 5XE. TEL: 01706 522141
GOOD FOOD GUIDE REVIEW: THE CLOCK TOWER RESTAURANT
The ritual of afternoon tea owes its origins to Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford. As a young woman in the early 1800s, she lived during a time when it was common to eat only two main meals a day, with breakfast scheduled early in the morning and dinner occurring late in the evening. Routinely weakened and irritated by hunger pangs, she decided to schedule time to take tea and snack each afternoon. Nowadays tearooms throughout the country 52

offer permutations of this centuries-old tradition. There are no better surroundings in Rochdale to savour this experience than in the sumptuous ground floor dining room of the The Clock Tower in Rochdale Town Hall. With comfortable seating, stunning décor and majestic high ceilings, complete with incredible chandeliers, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in a five star hotel. The presentation of your sandwiches and cakes is very refreshing with a great selection of
teas and coffees to help you digest their mouthwatering delights. The restaurant is only open Monday to Friday but if you’re anything like us, you can always find a good excuse to go for a mid-week treat in the magnificence of Rochdale Town Hall. At only £9.90 per person it’s proving very popular so it might be advisable to book in advance. Rochdale Town Hall, The Esplanade, OL15 8NL Tel: 01706 924772

CHEF COMPETITION
CROWNS A NEW WINNER KRISS STAR WAS RECENTLY DECLARED THE WINNER OF THE DECKERS HOSPITALITY GROUP’S CHEF COMPETITION FOR THE FIRST TIME. ALTHOUGH PREVIOUSLY A FINALIST, KRISS, FROM PENNINE MANOR, HAD NEVER BEFORE WON THE ANNUAL EVENT, WHICH TAKES PLACE WITHIN THE ROCHDALE BASED GROUP’S RESTAURANTS. The announcement was made at a celebratory dinner held in the Peacock Room where sponsors, and guests were treated to some of the standout dishes from the contest this year. This event allows the chefs to step out of their usual busy kitchens into the intense arena of competition cooking. Tested on their ingredient knowledge, technical ability, and creativity, the standard this year was exceptional. Group Head Chef, Rob Walker said, “I’m proud to say we had a record number of entries this year. It’s great to see the creativity and level of ability we, as a group, have within our kitchen teams. I can’t thank our sponsors enough. We
couldn’t give our chefs this opportunity without them. It was a very close final, with Dale Bowker (The Peacock Room), Callum Lynch (Cenetta), Jack Fletcher (The Peacock Room) and Ashley Lutz (Pennine Manor) the other worthy finalists.” Deckers Managing Director Max Brierley said, “I’m very pleased for Kriss, he is a very worthy winner, and the first from Pennine Manor. He works very hard and has a great eye for detail. This is the 10th Anniversary of Cuisine Supreme, our chef’s competition. It’s a wonderful to showcase the talent in our kitchens. We receive a great deal of support for this event from our sponsors and the Deckers board are looking forward to the next 10 years.”
nkd Mey! E,Dri Jo Burnett is passionate about wine, having worked in the industry for the last 10 years. She has spent quite some time slurping, and hopes to put some of this passion to good use, offering Style readers a few excellent wine tips in every edition. Christmas is fast approaching, and what to drink on Christmas day? Well, we covered that last year, in fact when this column started, and I’d still stick by the same, Viognier for white, and Pinot Noir for red. However, how about something a bit special, for a change for everyday drinking in the festive season? If you like your warming reds, which I really do, and you haven’t tried a Carmenere, do so! The best Carmenere comes from Chile. If you can find it, Casillero is a great example, but any Chilean Carmenere priced around £7-9 will be great value for money. Carmenere has rich, plummy fruits and herbaceous tones. It also has a cocoa powder note, making this particular grape variety a really tasty treat. An alternative to the norm, on a warming red – look out for reds from Navarra. This region produces beautiful
54

wines, but is overshadowed in recognition by its neighbour Rioja. Growing the same grapes as Rioja, predominately, Garnacha and Tempranillo, this region produces wines similar to Rioja, at great value. For white wine, something different to the usual Pinot Grigio, how about a Fiano, which is typically Italian, but with a little more texture than everyday Pino. Widely available in supermarkets, this wine really made inroads into the UK as the price of Pinot Grigio rose due to demand outstripping supply. For a special white wine, why not go back to an old faithful, still there, still great, still making the new world envy their style and heritage; Sancerre. The original Sauvignon Blanc, French grown and produced. Sancerre really was the benchmark for the rest of the world until New Zealand came along and introduced us to great Sauvignon Blancs from Marlborough. I would like to see us revisit the classic this festive season. However, don’t buy an old Sancerre. 2-3 years old is perfect. Enjoy! Jo Burnett Style’s Wine Expert

SUPREME OF CHICKEN WITH CHRISTMAS DINNER FRITTER A great twist on your classic Christmas dinner that doesn’t take hours to cook.
All the tastes and flavours of a traditional Christmas dinner are combined in an amazing spring roll style dish (spring roll pastry is available from most Chinese supermarkets, if you can’t get hold of it use a few sheets of phyllo pastry instead).
As an additional side dish shred up some more baby sprouts and sauté them briefly for 2-3 minutes in a pan with some ginger, garlic, chillies and fresh coriander - it’s a taste explosion!
SERVES 4 4 supreme of corn-fed chicken, skin on, each 170g Few leaves of fresh basil Salt, and freshly ground pepper Dashes of olive oil FOR THE CHICKEN DINNER FRITTERS 1 tbsp olive oil 2 rashers of smoked bacon, chopped 2 onions finely chopped 1 chicken supreme, thinly diced 1 garlic clove, chopped 10 sprouts, finely shredded 1 cooked sausage, diced 2 spring onion, chopped 1 tbsp chives, chopped 1 potato, cooked and mashed 4 sheets of spring roll pastry 1 egg, beaten Vegetable oil, for deep-frying FOR THE SAUCE 1 tbsp olive oil 2 shallots, chopped fine 2 tbsp brandy 300ml port 600ml beef stock Few fresh sage leaves Salt, and freshly ground pepper 56
www.rochdalestyle.com
METHOD 1. To make the Christmas dinner fritter, heat the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the bacon until golden. Add the onion, diced chicken and garlic and fry, stirring, until cooked through. 2. Stir in the sprouts, sausage, spring onion, chives and mashed potato and leave to cool. Season to taste.
7. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fat fryer and deep-fry the fritters for 4 minutes until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper, then keep warm. 8. To make the sauce, heat the olive oil in a saucepan. Add in the shallot and fry gently until softened. 9. Add in the brandy and carefully flambé it, burning off the alcohol. Add the port and reduce by half.
3. Pull back the skin of the 4 chicken supreme, press a few basil leaves onto the flesh of each supreme and cover with the skin again. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper.
10. Add the stock and continue to reduce. When it reaches a sauce consistency pass through a sieve and season.
4. Heat an ovenproof frying pan and add in the olive oil. Add in the chicken supreme and sear on both sides. Place in a hot oven 180°c for 6-8 minutes until cooked though.
11. When ready to serve, place a fritter and a portion of chicken each on four warm serving plates. Spoon around the sauce and serve with your choice of vegetables.
5. Meanwhile, make the fritters. Lay out the spring roll pastry sheets and place a few tablespoons of the Christmas dinner fritter mixture running along the bottom edge.
A FEAST FIT FOR A KING!
6. Brush the pastry edges with the beaten egg and roll into a fritter shape, pressing firmly to seal the edges. Repeat the process making 4 in all.

It is finally here! A new cafe has opened at Touchstones and Style magazine was keen to sample it. It has given an immediate ‘lift’ to the Visitor Information area. The Art Cafe is run by the Corporation Coffee Company and

I had a spinach and feta cheese quiche which was light and
flavoursome and probably the best that I have ever tasted. It was accompanied by a homemade potato salad and a lovely
side salad which included far more than the simple garnish one
is led to expect in most places. The cafe also sells sandwiches,

there is a daily special. Free Wi-Fi is also available.
All the bakes and cakes at the cafe are made on-site using

They are locally sourced if possible. Debra's own mother is in

Debra has exciting plans for the cafe - she wants to make the
Art Cafe a community hub where both Rochdale residents and visitors can come and enjoy good food, coffee and maybe a

There is a ready-made patio area which will be a nice addition to the exterior of this historic building.
Inside the cafe there is now a Victorian ‘parlour’ theme with

ROCHDALE News & Events The last six months have been packed full of fundraising events, from fashion shows to fairs and walks to awards. Here are just a few of the many annual events that help to raise money for Springhill Hospice. This year’s Dog Show and Traditional Country Fete in June had hundreds of wagging tails and panting puppies enjoying the sunshine at Rochdale Riding Club. Families were entertained with Punch & Judy, fairground, donkey rides, birds of prey, farm animals, crafts and stalls. Roll on June 2017 when it’s going to be bigger and better! Watch this space.
JOIN THE FESTIVE FUN! Put your best festive fundraising foot forward by putting on a santa suit and taking part in this year’s Santa Dash or Dawdle on Sunday 11th December. Join hundreds of Santas, young and old, two legged or four, for what has become an amazing spectacle around Hollingworth Lake.
In July, the Moonlit Sprint or Stroll once again saw supporters galore donning Springy the Frog onesies to hop, skip or jump the 10km route starting from Rochdale’s Rugby Union Club. The efforts of this green brigade of invertebrates totalled a bouncing £6000! On one balmy evening in July, the Hospice grounds were transformed to host the annual Summer Serenade. Picnickers and patients alike were entertained by host Dudley Doolittle, local choirs, bands and soloists, all doing their bit, free of charge, to raise a song-tastic £2000.
TEAM TOM!
The one thing Springhill Hospice fundraisers have in common is the desire to give something back. In the case of Chantelle Thornton, and her family and friends, they not only wanted to say ‘thank you’ but also wanted to help ensure that Springhill’s doctors and nurses could continue their care for others. Last year, the hospice cared for Chantelle’s husband, Tom Thornton, who tragically lost his life to cancer just weeks after the birth of their son Maxwell. One year on and Chantelle, along with ‘Team Tom’, have pledged their support to
This will be the 11th Santa Dash or Dawdle for Springhill Hospice. Last year saw 616 Santas donning red and white, so why not join the fun... it's a fantastic experience not to be missed. Registration for the Santa Dash costs £12 per adult, and £8 per child for which you'll receive your very own santa suit, a commemorative mug
Springhill Hospice. Team Tom, a group made up of over 30 supporters, chose to run Manchester’s 10k, raising both money and awareness for the Hospice, wearing specially made t-shirts bearing the smiling face of Rochdale Rugby Union player, Tom. Speaking about their fundraising efforts Chantelle said, “Team Tom has collectively raised £3,431 so far and our total is still rising. It is really important to us all to know that someone else will receive the same extra special care that Tom was able to receive.”
to use all year round, a specially designed medal, a bottle of water, disposable rain mac (if needed!), a banana and a sponsor form. Last year this event raised a staggering £18,500 for Springhill Hospice and it is hoped this year’s will raise even more!

DIPPY IS COMING TO ROCHDALE
The revealing the Roch project has already scooped a number of awards
Rochdale’s river re-opening project has picked up another award, with the scheme scooping a Constructing Excellence Award for Heritage at the National Constructing Excellence Awards. The £5m project to reveal the River Roch and historic bridge in Rochdale town centre has already won five other awards, including a national planning award for heritage and environment, since its completion in the summer. The judges were particularly impressed with the sympathetic use of heritage materials and methods used during the work, with traditional stonemasons being brought in to ensure bridge repairs were carried out using traditional techniques to match the original stone. Councillor Richard Farnell, Leader of Rochdale Borough Council, said: “The river re-opening and restoration of our medieval 64

It’s great to see this project getting more national attention and I’m sure the river and its bridge will be a stand out feature in our ever changing town centre for years to come.” The judges were also impressed that the project involved more than 8,000 local people, with many getting involved in knitting workshops, archaeology and art, creative writing, and heritage skills sessions. The project was led by Rochdale Borough Council with support from the Environment Agency and Heritage Lottery Fund.
