Upon meeting Lilli Frey on a cool winter’s morning on the cusp of our cover shoot, one thing is abundantly clear – she has a passion for jewellery that runs deep in her veins.
The owner and creative director of Freya Fine Jewellery is as effervescent and vibrant as the jewels and gems in her collection. As she lays the various rings, necklaces, and earrings out across the table, our team collectively oohs and aahs at the delicate morsels – a mixture of diamond, gold, pearl, and coloured stones mixed with Venetian glass. The reality is, jewellery design really has always been in Lilli’s makeup. Both her mother and father are talented goldsmiths and designers, and after bouncing around in the creative industries, Lilli eventually followed the footsteps of her parents and made her venture into fine jewellery. “Fine jewellery has always been a part of my story. One of my earliest memories is of a goldsmithing lecture I attended with my mother as a toddler – I fell into the lecture theatre’s rubbish bin, much to the amusement of the professor!” she recounts. But it wasn’t until her thirties after a decade-long career in the creative industries that she really turned her focus to her own jewellery designs. “I started sketching rings in the evening once my children were asleep. I took technical jewellery drawing classes and learnt to paint gemstones in water colour,” she says. “Designing in this way was a pivotal experience for me – bringing the jewels to life on paper with pencils and paint opened my eyes to the power of colour.”
