ummer is finally here, which means everything feels lighter and brighter. There is a distinct feeling of positivity in the air and, after the incredible Jubilee celebrations, along with the iconic Diana Ross belting her classic hits out at our very own Cardiff Castle, it’s safe to say this summer season is setting off to be a good one. This got me thinking about the power of positivity and gratitude. Our capital city is so diverse and rich with culture. The beautiful Victorian arcades, Cardiff Bay’s fantastic sea views, Bute Park with its lush green features, I could go on; it’s the summer season especially which makes me feel a real sense of gratitude about the beauty around us. We welcome you then to our summer issue with the incredible current Miss Wales title holder, Darcey Corria (P11), gracing our front cover. Darcey shares all on her journey so far, along with her passion to push diversity in pageantry. We have filled this issue with all the things you love, including our sought-after fashion section (P17) where we talk all things sustainable fashion, and fabulous fashion spreads to get you beach-ready. Fancy a staycation this summer? Our popular ‘City Stays’ section (P37) showcases some amazing hotels, from Bath to London. Our ‘Hair & Beauty’ section (P27) to get your tresses feeling amazing this summer, and if you’re looking for a new career in beauty, Alida Academy has the perfect course for you. We get familiar with female entrepreneur and founder of KEW Planning, Kathryn Williams (P50). Here she shares with Style of the city Magazine how her planning consultancy company is truly paving the way (quite literally). Plus lots more in this edition to give you the best summer read. We are also excited to unveil our Summer Brunch event happening on the 6th of August at Lo Lounge Cardiff Bay. We promise an afternoon of truly fabulous fun, with special entertainment guest MC DT, the best DJs and so much more. All the details (P45).
S
We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Wishing everyone the best summer yet. Thanks for picking us up x

Laings Family Collection an education in diamonds There is a certain twinkle in the eyes of Richard Laing as he describes the proposal stories he has been a part of over the years.
estled in the luxurious Laings showroom he laughs conspiratorially as he recounts the romantic and occasionally humorous tales. Richard’s role in all of them have been the same, he has found ‘the one’ – the diamond ring that marks forever. Growing up in a luxury family jeweller meant that an appreciation for diamonds was unavoidable. However, it was on Richard’s trips to the diamond capital, Antwerp, where he really fell for the world’s most famous gemstone. Historically the largest diamond district in the world, the streets of the Belgian city have an enchanting atmosphere. Since as far back as the 15th century the city has been the focus of diamond trade and at one point 84% of the world’s rough diamonds passed through. It is a place filled with promise, unimaginable riches and mystery, with the sought-after-stones reigning supreme. With 380 workshops lining the Diamond Quarter, hours and days can be spent choosing from thousands of gemstones. There is an air of excitement to the district dubbed as the ‘Diamond Square Mile’. Everyone here is in the business of romance, creating something to perfectly tell a love story that they are not even privy to yet.
N
“I loved the Antwerp trips. There’s so much to learn from each company, all with different strengths. Some are good for fancy cuts, others are better for uncertified diamonds, or certified, you get to know them and build relationships depending on what you’re looking for.” Honing his skills in Antwerp meant that Richard developed a keen eye for the very best diamonds available. In 2017 alone, roughly 234 million carats of diamonds were traded. This shows the substantial quantities that both the dealers and buyers work with, and Richard used
his expertise to select only diamonds with incomparable fire and brilliance. “I used to visit Antwerp with my dad and when I went to dealers on my own, they would often think this is going to be easy, almost taking me for a bit of a ride. Instead, I examined every detail and selected the very best. It got to the point where they wouldn’t let me see the rest of the diamonds as they knew I was only going to pick superior stones.” When Richard talks about diamonds it is easy to see that, for him, it is all in the details. With the knowledge he gained in Antwerp, he fully understands what makes them so renowned. As he examines the rings cushioned in Laings navy-blue boxes, he sees individual characteristics, invisible to most, that come together to create a unique personality for each stone that can then be admired by all. “Buying diamonds from Antwerp is always an amazing experience. After going for so many years, I gained such an appreciation of what was involved. When buying loose diamonds direct from dealers, you have to make sure you are selecting the best ones.” Richard uses this expertise to add his own personal seal of approval to Laings exclusive jewellery range – The Family Collection. From the very beginning and continuing now, every diamond within the collection is blessed with the diamond custodian’s seal of approval. Visit Laings showroom or shop online at laingsuk.com. Nerys Jenkins – Director of After-Sales
Tell me about your first car? “My first car was a Talbot Horizon, 5 door in red. It was probably about 10 years old when I bought it. Looking back, it was probably not the greatest or trendiest of cars but I had bought it myself and I loved it, it gave me a lot of freedom when I was 17 and passed my driving test.” What is your dream car and why? “My first car was a Talbot Horizon, 5 door in red. It was probably about 10 years old when I bought it. Looking back, it was probably not the greatest or trendiest of cars but I had bought it myself and I loved it, it gave me a lot of freedom when I was 17 and passed my driving test.”
Molly-Ann Hopkin – Marketing Assistant
Tell me about your first car? “My first car was a hand-me-down 2003 Corsa which ran me around for a few years! She was 18 years old when I bought her for £150 with only one wheel trim left attached by a cable tie! Cindy the Corsa was completely falling apart but she had so much character!” What is your dream car and why? “My dream car is a Mercedes G Wagon! I have dreamt of having a Mercedes G Wagon for a while. I would love the ocean blue colour - it looks so classy! I'm not too sure why exactly this is my dream car; I simply love how they look.”
Paul Griffiths – Sales Manager Tell me about your first car? “I had my first car when I was 15. It was a 1969 VW beetle. My father bought it for me to keep me out of trouble! However, I had always wanted a convertible, so one day I decided to take the roof off with a chisel and a hammer. My father wasn’t best pleased, but it didn’t stop him from buying me a 1985 Vauxhall Nova when I was officially allowed to drive.”
What is your dream car and why? “My dream car, without question, is a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California SWB. The exact same car from the film, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The car is a complete work of art! The last one of these cars sold for in excess of 5 million pound, which is a little out of my price range, so I’ll stick with my Ford Ranger.”
Emily O’Neill – Marketing Manager
Tell me about your first car? “My first car was a Citroen C3. It was a hand me down and was old by the time I was driving it. I love it because it afforded me freedom… although I did get locked inside it once. I had the keys on me but the electrics were a bit dodgy, and it used to make an awful high-pitched noise when I drove over 40mph.” What is your dream car and why? “My dream car is ANY car that I do not have to drive. The dream is actually to be chauffeur driven everywhere!”

DARCEY CORRIA
A conversation with Miss Wales
DARCEY CORRIA Darcey Corria is the current Miss Wales and is on a mission to highlight diversity. Having entered the competition in 2019, finishing as runner-up, Darcey was undeterred by her loss and last year put all her effort into making her comeback and winning the title. Darcey, from Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, struggled with the lack of representation of people of colour within pageantry and worked closely with charity ‘Race Equality Wales’, along with becoming actively involved in shaping anti-racism legislation in Wales. Darcey shares her journey so far with Style of the city Magazine
Photography: Yolanda Kingdon
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE PAGEANTRY WORLD? My mum first applied for me when I was 17 years old. At first I was really apprehensive. I wasn’t very keen and didn’t understand what it was. I didn’t think it was something I would ever be keen on doing. This was until I met Paula Abbandonato (Director of Miss Wales), who explained to everyone applying what was involved with Miss Wales. I instantly, at that point, fell in love with pageantry. Paula explained that Bethany Harris (past Miss Wales) was ‘an ordinary girl who did an extraordinary thing’. The journey began and I met the other finalists, absolutely loved the process, especially the final weekend. They say you get the ‘pageant bug’, which was true for me. Although I came runner-up in the 2019 competition, I was determined to come back and try again, which I did! Looking back, being 18 and pursuing A Levels, I couldn’t give it my full attention, but I learnt so much the first time around. Style of the city 13
INTERVIEW Cape Verde and Yemenis, then they had my father. We’re from a huge family, always big family parties happening, I always have the best time.
HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR MISS WALES? When I applied the second time around, I had just got out of a toxic relationship and wanted I to do something for myself, to find myself again. I knew I wanted to push equality and highlight diversity in Wales. I got involved with the charity ‘Race Equality First’ and organised a fitness class once a week in Barry for Black and ethnic minorities. For Muslim women in particular, the health statistics are very poor compared to Caucasian females. I wanted to start one in Barry and thought bringing women of colour together under one roof, women that they might not have known, a place to make friendships and share fitness goals. I wanted to give back to the community. My strategy was to say yes to everything, get involved in what I can, raise money and keep active on social media, to share my journey, going through the competition, with my followers.
WHAT WAS THE NEXT STAGE AFTER BECOMING A MISS WALES FINALIST?
WHO INSPIRED YOU GROWING UP? I would say my role model for many years is Princess Diana, all the charitable work she did, especially for people living with HIV. She broke barriers and stigmas; I’m really inspired to be somebody like her.
HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED RACISM AND HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME ANY OBSTACLES? I’ve experienced racism, mostly in secondary school where there would be lots of jokes people would say about me, passing comments. I came to realise they weren’t really joking, just passive aggression. I remember on one occasion going to a friend’s funeral, somebody made the ‘joke’ ‘Jesus doesn’t like black 14 Style of the city
people, why are you here?’ It really stuck with me for a long time after. I would always try and laugh things off but inside I felt totally deflated. I would go home and speak with my mum. I didn’t want to tell anyone else what was going on; it was just really hard. With ex partners I have experienced racism also. They would say after that they didn’t mean it but, again, words stick. I’m good at brushing comments off. Looking back I feel I should have dealt with these issues more; there are comments I still think about now.
TELL ME ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND My grandad was from Jamaica and settled in Cardiff ’s Tiger Bay during the Windrush generation. He then met my nan, who is of mixed heritage from
I had an email to say they wanted to interview me via Zoom. I had the interview with Paula, it went really well. I knew at that point I just wanted to dedicate everything into becoming Miss Wales. I thought if I give this everything, even if I don’t win, I would gain so much from it.
HOW DID YOU KEEP YOURSELF MOTIVATED THROUGHOUT THE COMPETITION? Friends and family helped tremendously and were my biggest cheerleaders. My mum’s side of the family are spread across England and Wales so, during our family group chats, they constantly kept checking in and kept me motivated. There were times where I thought I wasn’t sure if I could keep the momentum up, but I never lost my passion, and different opportunities kept coming my way. I planned out
DARCEY CORRIA meticulously how I would work month-to-month via fundraising and social media, along with working closely with Race Equality First.
vibration within yourself to try and bring somebody else down. I made a promise to myself that I would stop looking at the comments and just focus on the positives.
TELL US ABOUT THE WORK YOU ARE DOING WITH RACE EQUALITY FIRST I’m running a fitness class in Barry for Black, Asian and ethnic minorities in Cwm Talwg, Barry. This is free of charge and funded by Race Equality First. I’m also extremely active pushing diversity and have recently set up my campaign ‘Darcey for Diversity’. This is where I will be tackling racism issues throughout Wales. I’m very excited to be supporting the first Afro-Caribbean hair apprenticeship, it’s the first Afro hair apprenticeship scheme in Wales.
HOW WAS THE DAY OF THE FINAL? It’s funny reflecting on it now because I don’t think I have enough due to being so busy. I was really nervous, lacking in the sleep department. I had a lift to the venue with one of the other girls and was fine on the way in. Almost immediately, I felt that feeling of nerves overwhelm me as I prepared for the interview stage of the competition. I wanted to get it right and cried beforehand. I was so overwhelmed, it just meant so much to me. I wanted the judges to see who Darcey was, so I was overthinking everything. I ended the interview with a really powerful statement that hadn’t been rehearsed and has stuck with me ever since: ‘If I am to win Miss Wales, I want to tackle racism in Wales and the UK and I believe that myself and the Miss Wales brand will be a force to be reckoned with.’
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO PEOPLE THAT ARE JUDGEMENTAL ABOUT THE PAGEANTRY SYSTEM IN TODAY’S SOCIETY? I would say pageantry is extremely relevant in today’s society. If you look at the Miss Wales ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ campaign, which has raised millions of pounds for good causes, this wouldn’t have been possible without the competition. I would say the world
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE BEING MISS WALES?
I’M ALSO EXTREMELY ACTIVE PUSHING DIVERSITY AND HAVE RECENTLY SET UP MY CAMPAIGN ‘DARCEY FOR DIVERSITY.’ would be a less bright place without pageantry because of the work that goes on behind the scenes. I think women benefit from pageantry, especially in Wales, seeing the journey of women who enter and how it helps with confidence. I would not have had the confidence to do half of the things I have been able to do, without pageantry.
DO YOU FEEL WOMEN ARE UNDER TOO MUCH PRESSURE FOR PERFECTION? I think women put a lot of pressure on themselves. I think social media has a lot to answer for in terms of beauty standards. I personally vow to post my true and natural self, and I want girls to know I don’t edit my Instagram photos.
HOW HAVE YOU DEALT PERSONALLY WITH THE NEGATIVE SIDE OF SOCIAL MEDIA? I never experienced trolling until winning Miss Wales. I felt sorry for those writing negative comments about me. I think you must be on such a low
I would like to take every opportunity that comes my way, although daunting, I do want to say yes to everything; the more I give, the more I shine a light on different causes which will ultimately benefit so many others. I’m also focusing on Miss World and getting into the top five. Ultimately, I want to be a role model to young women of mixed ethnicity in Wales. I’m supporting the Sun Poverty Campaign for young children. The Sun Poverty Campaign aims to educate children on the importance of preventing skin damage. 80% of sun damage happens before the age of 18. Growing up with my skin being darker to most of my friends, I always had the opinion that I didn’t need skincare. I want to help educate younger children on the importance of applying sun cream. I will be going into schools to push this message.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE FUTURE? I would like to be on the same level as Maya Jama: TV presenting, radio. I’ve always seen myself in TV. I’m really inspired by Maya Jama. I think her personality shines through and how true and genuine she is.
QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS What are you currently listening to? Michael Jackson ‘rock with you’.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING? Good Vibes, Good Life by Vex King.
BIGGEST SPLURGE? Zara I spend hundreds in that store lol.
BEST ADVICE YOU WERE GIVEN? Stay true to yourself.

space for everything feminine, and have fun while doing it. Anyone can be daring, yet we keep using a word- ballsythat only applies to 50% of the population. So, let’s be titsy! And let’s ditch the B's and the D's, after all, we all have tits. It is more universal and more inclusive. Let's change our language, and carry on "Big Tits Energy" instead, as an expression of courage and boldness. Melin Edomwonyi is a multi-hyphenate: a graphic designer; a UX designer; a creative director; a mentor; a problem solver. Melin is currently working as a creative director for a Bcorp agency based in Cardiff- Yellow Sub Creative- cooking up some good things for the people and the planet. She has a passion for playing with words, typography, and calligraphy. Melin has been “different” all her life; being born in Turkey and growing up there as a black mixed girl, she always stood out, and never fit in. Even when she moved to the UK, her unique, and some may say bold, weird, and colourful, approach to life and work, made her stand out even more. She went through a lot to get to where she was and Lil Titsy became her way of “sticking it” to the world. She embraced being shamelessly different, choosing joy instead of chasing happiness, owning her imperfections, having bold weird energy, and empowering others along the way. Lil Titsy, like everything great that stands the test of time, was finally brought to life after a life-changing event. Melin had been making t-shirts for friends to make them feel better and empowered during hard times. Melin, herself, had to leave her home as a result of a terrible break-up and live out of a suitcase for months in friends' houses. This is when she recognised that what she had been giving to her friends was something she needed: an encouragement to keep on going, and a simple garment that can be worn in different ways for various occasions. Her then favourite t-shirt from CreativeMornings : “we believe in giving a
damn”, became her go-to t-shirt for the days she needed a bit of a push. The slogan was great but it wasn't how she felt every day. She needed a way of expressing her complex and varied emotions. During those endless nights, being awake in friends’ spare rooms, what kept her going was practicing brush lettering to stay creative, and writing fun and motivational quotes from her favourite shows, like Bob’s Burger; she realised she was writing things she needed to hear or wished she could put on a t-shirt… So the idea of Lil Titsy was born. She was going to create t-shirts to embrace different moods, for different days that we as humans go through. Questioning being a woman, femininity, and feminism was the key to the brand's purpose. Now Lil Titsy is here to embrace the weird, the different, and the feminine in any form. Lil Titsy is here to resist with joy, laughter, and self-love. The joy of being unapologetically different is protest enough in this world. Lil Titsy is here to learn and explore self-love in a world where we are not encouraged to do so. BOHO BUFFALO
The Bohemian Welsh Brand Inspired by Dallas
If you love a flowing bohemian vibe, feathers galore or some fun fringing then Boho Buffalo is most definitely the brand for you! oho Buffalo is a unique online boutique specialising in luxury ‘Boho-Chic’ clothing and accessories for authentic, high vibe women. This unique welsh brand blurs the lines between bohemian and western styles in an aesthetic that feels personal with a heightened sense of individuality.
B
THE STORY This small independent brand, was created by Cardiff based designer Emma-Jayne Lloyd. Her semi precious jewellery and stand out accessories are mainly designed and made in house or outsourced to ethical artisan projects around the globe. The collections are inspired by free spirited fashion from destinations such as Bali, Texas and Ibiza! EJ: I get asked a lot…'How does a Welsh valleys girl end up selling cowgirl boots and Ibiza style fashion?' After years growing up watching Dallas, I was always a little obsessed with cowgirl couture, Texas accents and turquoise jewellery (and the inevitable crush on Bobby Ewing!) I discovered a deeper love of 24 Style of the city
southwestern style and a passion for country music on subsequent travels in the US. Shopping boho boutiques Ibiza, Bali and Mallorca inspired me to bring more luxury bohemian fashion to Wales. After 15 years as a secondary school teacher, I became chronically ill with Fibromyalgia and ME. It was an extremely challenging time but it gave me time to get clear on my dreams and passions. I started to sketch jewellery every day in bed (it was all I could do at that time) and then researched how to set up a business. I also discovered reiki and crystal healing, which added another dimension to my jewellery designs which incorporate high quality crystals. Boho Buffalo is now an all singing all dancing boutique selling boots, bags and clothing as well as my jewellery. I wanted to create a brand of really wearable and affordable yet glamorous Boho-Western fashion that encourages women to get playful with their wardrobe! There's nothing more powerful than a fully expressed, confident woman. I want every person who wears my pieces to feel
that they are making a statement to the world about who they are and find joy in the process. BB is also all about comfort, fluidity and intricate detailing that adds that extra bit of wow factor!
COLLABS Boho Buffalo is the go to stylist for prominent UK country music artists, collaborating on jewellery collections and styling projects. The most recent project ‘Boho Buffalo Collective’ showcased how women of all shapes or sizes can rock the boho western look and encourage them to step out of your comfort zone. The clothing sizes go from XS right up to a 3XL so no one is excluded from feeling like a goddess!

An Attitude of Gratitude keeping with this month’s theme our favourite mantras “always have an attitude of gratitude”.
o in keeping with this month’s theme we wanted to start our column with one of our favourite mantras “always have an attitude of gratitude”. We’re glass half full kinda gals and always try to have a positive outlook on life, even in the toughest times (like when you’re entire warehouse burns to the ground and you lose everything overnight – yup that happened) and part of that attitude is being grateful for everything we’ve achieved. We’re huge believers in the power of positive thinking and whenever something good happens to us we always take a moment to “thank the Universe” – something our mum always encourages us to do. Giving thanks means being observant of all the good in your life and it also means being open to receiving more abundance. Some of our favourite books on the power of positive thinking are “The Secret” and “Good Vibes, Good Life” we promise they’ll give you a new perspective. Another great way of expressing gratitude is by goal setting and journaling to reflect on the present and plan for the future. Start by simply writing down three things each day that you’re grateful for and three things you’d like to achieve, then look back on them and have them in your sights until you hit that goal. It's important to remember that 'goals'
S
and 'achievements' don't always have to be big. Something as simple as going for a walk and making time to get a coffee with friends is something we aspire to a lot of the time particularly when we're really busy, it makes us remember it's the little things in life that bring us the most joy. We recently launched a new collection that is quite literally makeup brushes in sunshine form and just looking at them fills us with positivity and also gratitude that we’re fortunate enough to work with Disney. The Winnie the Pooh Collection went completely viral for us on social media and we have a feeling it’s down to the pure joy and feelings of nostalgia that come from the characters. As well as being super cute, Piglet is also a big advocate of gratitude so we’ll be taking more inspiration from him for our own daily routines - “he noticed that even though he had a very small heart, it could hold a rather large amount of gratitude”. So we’ll leave you with Piglet’s wise words and encourage you to take a moment for yourself each day to reflect and say a little “thank you”. www.spectrumcollections.com @spectrumcollections Style of the city 29

TONI & GUY CARDIFF
Hair Excellence New Owner Leaon Williams is Continuing 25 Years of Hair Excellence at One of Cardiff’s Favourite Hair Salons his year Toni & Guy have celebrated 25 years in Cardiff. Launched in 1997 under John and Sue Sullivan the salon has had a few changes over the years. It started off in its original location of Saint Mary Street alongside sister salon Essentials on Saint John Square to its recent location on Churchill Way. Churchill Way itself is undergoing a major revamp as is Toni & Guy Cardiff. Under new ownership by long running Salon Colourist Leaon. Leaon from Trealaw in Rhondda started hairdressing in Tonypandy in 2000. “I remember flicking through the hairdressing magazines at the time and always been drawn to these bold graphic haircuts and colours. I would look at the glossary to see who created them and it was always Toni & Guy. I thought to myself I have to work for this company!” One of my friends had started to work for the company and she got me an interview and in 2003 I started my journey in Toni & Guy. In my almost 20 years with the company, I have
T

had the opportunity to develop my skills as a hairdresser and manager. The support and on-going training are limitless. I have also had the opportunity to work in some of the international branches, I have spent a year in Bahrain in the middle east and Lausanne in Switzerland where I took part in photoshoots and onstage presentation work alongside helping to establish a strong clientele. Since returning to Cardiff I have regained all my loyal clientele, some of which I have been colouring since I first started in 2003. In 2019 John and Sue had approached me with an idea, explaining that they would like to retire soon. I was thrilled and honoured to be given the opportunity to take my next steps in my hairdressing career and become the salon owner. I have been enrolled in management and leadership courses through Toni & Guy and Business Wales who have been fantastic with guiding me through the buyout, assisting me with my business plan and advising me on finance options. I cannot thank them enough. Then the pandemic hit, all plans were put on hold and contracts suspended. After the numerous lockdowns and thanks to the
patience and support of John and Sue, I completed the Salon buyout in October 2021. The hard work now begins, but with the support of the fantastic team (some of whom have been with the salon 25 years) it has been a dream come true. Toni & Guy is constantly evolving, recently we have introduced our booking office where clients can phone at times even outside of our usual opening hours from 7am – 8pm 7 days a week. This runs alongside our new website and our booking app; clients can book in just 2 clicks 24 hours a day. This year we are also revamping our product line Label-M to include more sustainable ingredients and packaging with improved user experience, by scanning our packaging you’ll have access to digital content and how-to videos to use and create our signature looks using these products. We are also updating our service menu and our service offerings. In our new signature service menu, we will be moving towards a more inclusive approach by removing the labels “ladies” and “gents” from our services. We currently offer a wide range of services in addition to the signature cut and blow dry. These include the
HAIR &BEAUTY
very popular keratin smoothing treatment where clients can achieve silky smooth hair for up to 5 months and the Wellaplex bonding treatment which is fantastic for repairing broken damaged hair from the overuse of bleach or heat styling. Our product house Label-M also offers four fantastic snapshot treatments which you can add onto your cut or colour appointment. These include volume boost, colour revive, damage control and scalp soothing lotion. This year we are also looking to introduce a hair extension service and potentially a nail bar. There is a lot of work going on Churchill way at the moment with the development of the Canal Quarter, new bars, sandwich places, hotels planned nearby and the redevelopment Capital Centre. All of this along with the new re-vamps in our Salon and our Label-M line make for a very exciting few months ahead and we look forward to taking you all along the journey with us.

MIDDLE EIGHT
Now open in the heart of LONDON’S COVENT GARDEN A harmonious blend of beautiful design and timeless luxury
iddle Eight is a new lifestyle luxury hotel in Covent Garden designed for those who want to live the city, not just stay in it. This gorgeous property takes its name from the term “middle eight,” a type of musical interlude or bridge that differs in character from a song’s melody and is used to inject variety. Middle Eight works in a similar way, its luxurious offering enhancing the area while still holding strong to local heritage and character. The building itself dates back to 1912. Originally a Methodist church called Kingsway Hall, its legendary acoustics saw it become one of the world’s leading studios for the recording of classical and film music. Although completely rebuilt, Middle Eight continues that rich history of live music and performances through its dining and entertainment venues. The latter are spearheaded by QT, a decadent underground speakeasy that hosts a thrice weekly residency, QT Presents Leo Green, starring the legendary musician and broadcaster. First impressions at Middle Eight set a tone that continues throughout, with the double-height entrance, contemporary design and natural hues of the lobby, complete with its stunning hand-crafted, reclaimed oak reception desk, creating a lively and warm ambiance.

AND SO TO BED The interiors of Middle Eight’s 168 rooms and 12 suites are similarly inspired by nature. This is brought to life through a soft, tonal colour palette and the use of materials such as stone and wood. Even the room keys are fashioned from walnut. All five room categories - Standard - Deluxe and Superior - Executive - Junior Suites, Suites and Luxury Suites - feature bespoke furniture which ensures that Middle Eight’s signature style runs throughout, that space is maximised and that comfort is paramount. Nothing has been overlooked in a quest to create the ultimate in luxury that is still in keeping with the hotel’s core ethos, whether it’s the sumptuous bedding, the high thread count Egyptian cotton, the sustainable toiletries or the bathrobes made using recycled plastic. Every room also features
Nespresso coffee machines, 42” flatscreen TVs, soundbars with Chromecast and high-speed complimentary Wi-Fi. Named after pieces of music with a middle eight bridge, Middle Eight’s suites meanwhile set new standards for hotel living. Enormous beds and even more-spacious seating areas make these spaces the perfect place to unwind and relax, while the signature feature in several of the suites is an enclosed indoor garden flooded with natural light. Two other suites enjoy secluded outdoor terraces, perfect for al fresco dining and entertaining.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT Central to the hotel’s ability to draw in local life is its food & beverage offering. With an atmosphere that reflects the lively Covent Garden neighbourhood, Sycamore Vino Cucina is a contemporary bar and
restaurant inspired by the desire to deliver an authentic Italian experience. For those seeking a little more seclusion, The Balcony, situated on the Mezzanine floor and overlooking Sycamore Vino Cucina, serves a globally inspired menu throughout the day in a more tranquil setting. Beyond these more social options, Middle Eight’s lower floor houses a state-of-the-art gym that is exclusive to guests; personal training is also available. The emphasis at Middle Eight is rightly on giving guests a bespoke, unique experience. At the same time, the hotel is one that has a conscience; both people and the environment are integral to the decisions it makes. Rates are from £310 and £800 per suite per night. THE PARKGATE HOTEL
Sharing Never Felt Better at THE PARKGATE HOTEL Summer just got better with sharing platters, on the terrace at the Parkgate Hotel. hatever the occasion these delicious delicacies are truly something special. Here at Style of the city we decided to try them out for size and find out what all the fuss was about. It’s a Friday evening and after a long week what better way to catch up with your friends than with a glass of bubbly and some nibbles right? The sharing platters offer that laid back feel of evening food against the luxurious backdrop of the Parkgate. On summer days and warm evenings the Cwrt Terrace is the perfect spot to lounge, relax and indulge in delicious sharing platters, best enjoyed with chilled drinks. The service was fantastic as was the presentation. Two-tier platters felt kind of fitting for the season, given there’s a Jubilee, we felt like ‘queens.’ The presentation of wooden platters with carefully placed food items laid out, gave it a real warmth feel.

The best part of course was the tasting and each platter offered something different. The Garden Platter, for those wanting a plant based or vegetarian option. Curried cauliflower and mouth-watering haloumi tasted divine. The Field Platter, crispy porked belly and lamb crumpets along with lots more. The Sea Platter, with its hot smoked salmon and grilled tiger prawns. Our favourite being the Welsh platter, Welsh coastal fishcakes, Glamorgan sausages and Monmouthshire air dried ham, truly delicious. These gorgeous creations coupled with a bottle of fresh white wine was the perfect start to the weekend. It was wonderful to catch up with friends breaking bread together (quite literally) and in these post covid times, sharing and getting together still seems such a luxury to be cherished. THE WICKED ELK
Handmade candles, but not as you know them
Bonvilston based candle company The Wicked Elk is situated in the historic & lively Royal Arcade in Cardiff city centre. he Wicked Elk hand-make luxury scented candles with a difference. Liquid resin, hand poured into every lid, turns each one into a unique piece of art. These beautiful lids transform into jewellery trays or coasters, making them special keepsakes long after the candles burn. It all began back in 2018 when owner Steve Elks found himself needing an avenue to focus his mind while suffering with his mental health. It started with resin art initially and Steve found that creativity was a tonic for the mind. He began to combine the two medias, resin art and candle making, and so the business idea was born. Business partner Nicky Thomas soon joined Steve in the new venture as they had always shared a passion for candles during their time working together for one of the world‘s largest home furnishing retailers. Nicky and Steve set up their online platform initially, before launching an incredibly successful first stall at the Cardiff Christmas market last December.

The pair design everything themselves, from the packaging to the website, and recently also the layout and look of their newly opened shop in the Royal Arcade. The company offers 15 luxurious candle fragrances, which are also available as reed diffusers, room scents and wax melts. The candles are all vegan and cruelty free, and are created using a blend of soy, vegetable, and paraffin wax to give the strongest, richest scent throw. Steve and Nicky would like to expand the business further in the future, and plan to offer home hosting candle parties as well as candle-making workshops. They also have their sights set on the wedding market, from offering personalised wedding scents to favours, wedding party gifts and table centrepieces.

Enjoy outside entertaining When planning your space ensure you include the right elements.
Eating and drinking arrangements are top of the list, followed by practicalities such as heating, lighting, shade and shelter. Then all you have to think about is styling up the different spaces you’ve created to add comfort. ZONING Zoning and dividing garden spaces is a useful technique. The best entertaining gardens are enticing because they zone the available space to include a seating area with sofas for comfort, a covered dining space for alfresco eating and a focal point such as an outdoor fireplace or firepit to gather around for relaxing evenings. Even the smallest gardens can be zoned and divided into meaningful spaces. This can make your garden feel bigger and create space, allowing areas for your garden to explore.
OUTDOOR ROOM The divisions between inside and outside have been blurring for years; amplified by the shift towards a more flexible approach to where we work, rest and play. These outside spaces are now seen as an integral part of our home. I frequently link in a look that works both inside and out when I design homes for clients. My advice – look for products that are comfortable and chic in equal measure. Use a large mirror; it will throw light around and make a small space look bigger as well as creating a party ambience with shimmering reflections at dusk. LIGHTING To get as much use as possible of your outdoor area ensure you have adequate and sufficient lighting to be functional. So that you have flexibility consider using candles in lanterns and mix with hurricane
lamps; grouped together they create a wonderful ambient glow and instant atmosphere. Battery operated lighting can avoid the fuss of lighting with matches and can be operated with timers to turn on as soon as your guests arrive. TABLE DRESSING Table dressing has become the latest trend. Instagram ‘table scaping’ to find an abundance of ideas. When you entertain outside it doesn’t mean plastic plates anymore; the key thing is to live again. Enjoy the outdoors and your outside home space. You only get out of life what you put in. FAMILY & EDUCATION
Summer baby number 2! 'm having another baby! and the first response from most people is... 'WOW, you don't hang about, do ya?'.. well, we waited a couple of years... Indy will be 2 and half when the new baby comes along, but that's lockdown and covid life for you. Time stood still for a lot of people. Indy was born two weeks before we locked down the very time in March 2020. Life with a new-born then had its challenges but overall, when I look back, I feel we just cracked on with it because that's all we knew. We just had each other for months and it was a really lovely time for us personally, that bonding time was so precious. I think now that's my biggest worry having baby number. 2 in relatively normal times. I'm expecting it to be the same in my head. My world stopped back then and so did everyone else's. After the initial anxious and uncertain times there was calm in my body and peace in my mind. That won't be the case this time. I'll have visitors, I'll have play dates, I'll have work to go back to a lot sooner. I'll have a TODDLER

to look after as well! SOS! I'm excited but I'm trying to remind myself daily there will be a stark difference in the first 4 months when Indy came along. We are having a boy and he arrives in the Summer time! Despite today’s culture about gender neutrality, I mean there are obviously some physical differences in having a baby boy vs a baby girl. A lot of boy mums have pointed out to me that nappy changing is a whole world different to girls. That little fire hoses can go off whenever... and talking of which... 'remember to point the willy down in the nappy when you change them' that's another piece of advice boy mums love to tell me, oh and that they LOVE to grab IT! Great! Apart from the penis talk,I've heard that having a boy is amazing. A boys first love is their Mama. And even though little boys tend to be very physical with very high energy I've also heard they can be very cuddly and cwtchy. I've been told boys are more sensitive and girls are sassy!
It must be the Oedipus complex, but no one can deny that baby boys have an extra-special love for their Mums. I can't wait to enjoy that unconditional adoration while it lasts. It didn't last a long time with Indy. Indy by name and nature. 2 going on 13. She is in the dress-up and make-up stage at the moment, that's the only time I get her attention when I'm doing my make-up and I give her a bit of glitter eye shadow. She loves it! I think what I'm most looking forward to is her having a little brother and a best friend. She loves kids and playing. She is a right little character. I can't wait for her face when she finally meets her new brother. Also, my partner who is the best girl dad ever is stoked for a little boy, but Indy is Leighton's spit and they love hanging out together. They are the real besties here. I think we'll have a little Mummy's boy on our hands for sure. And I can't wait to meet my boy!

CALON CYMRU FOSTERING
Could you be a Foster Carer?
Fostering Hope with Calon Cymru Fostering.
G
areth had worked in managerial roles after being in the military for nine years. After years of hard work, working away from home and averaging 7-8 hours on the road each week, Gareth thought it was time for a change “I wanted to make a positive difference to someone’s life, I had spent too long working for other people, working in companies with cultural issues and no positive change”. He and his wife, Zena thought long and hard about fostering, weighing up the balance of whether it could work for them as a family, looking at the financials and creating a better work-home life balance. In 2019, after a lot of research into fostering services, Gareth finally made a call to Calon Cymru and has never looked back. “The agency you decide to foster with has got to be right for you and with Calon Cymru you just feel like part of the family straight away. The recruitment team were really engaging, they support you all the way and are very open and honest, I can’t give the agency enough praise”. There are no qualifications or childcare experience needed to become a foster carer. Initial
assessments of new foster carers will be based on how well we believe you could care for a child and that you are able to provide a young person with a safe and loving home. There are lots of transferrable skills that you will have gained through life experiences, and this will all be considered. “Resilience, conflict management, commitment, communication, and enthusiasm are all transferrable skills that I have needed whilst being a foster carer”. Once approved you have access to lots of training to equip you for the role. Gareth and Zena are now on their second therapeutically led placement (TLP) and this young person will remain with the couple until he reaches adulthood. Children in TLP placements have been through trauma and abuse and can display challenging behaviours, Calon Cymru offers a programme tailored to meet the needs of the child, young person, and the fostering family so you are fully supported throughout the journey. You have access to your own supervising social worker and direct support from a Therapist to support you in managing behaviour and your child will have their own individual worker. On top of this, Calon Cymru
offer an enhanced fostering allowance and increased respite. Gareth, along with many of our other experienced carers conduct a buddying scheme and are always open to speaking to potential foster carers to tell them the ins and outs of fostering. “You go through a lot of experiences in life, if you are in a position to help someone and be able to provide someone with security and stability you could foster, role modelling is so important to give that young person a better future.” Our Therapeutically Led Placements can achieve incredible results for children, and a long lasting, positive impact on you. Could you help a child improve their future? Call Calon Cymru today on 02920 811173 or visit our website www.caloncymrufostering.co.uk to learn more about the different types of fostering we offer.

ROBERTSONS SOLICITORS
Why a Lasting Powers of Attorney has become an essential part of later life planning. We talk to Probate and Lasting Powers of Attorney specialist Rhian Rees from Robertsons Solicitors about these most important but often overlooked documents. What is a Lasting Power of Attorney? noun: capacity: a person's legal competence. When you lose capacity, that is to say, the ability to make decisions for yourself, it is important that someone you trust and who knows you, is appointed to make decisions on your behalf. This is done by a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). What does a Lasting Power of Attorney cover? There are broadly two kinds of LPA. The first is a property and financial LPA which allows a nominated individual to make decisions relating to your finances and physical assets including your home. This means that your money and your home are both protected and maintained. The person appointed will be able to pay your bills, make deposits into your bank accounts and manage any income and expenditure. Could that still leave me potentially open to financial abuse? Not really. When you appoint an Attorney over your financial affairs, you choose which kinds of financial transactions they may enact. They are not allowed to make transfers to themselves or spend your money without specific authorisation.
including ‘life sustaining’ medical treatment. If you don’t have a health and wellness LPA in place, then the Local Authority may be appointed to make decisions on your behalf, or an individual not of your choice may be given attorney powers for you. As our population ages and the health and care sector is increasingly stressed, it’s crucial that you nominate someone with your own interests at heart, rather than choices being made for economical or geographical purposes.
Creating LPAs sounds complicated and expensive. Are they? That’s a common perception – but not at all! A straightforward LPA starts at £375 or £500 for two. A couple may create all four for around £750. So it’s not as expensive as you may think. For more information or advice, contact the Probate, Wills and Trusts team at Robertsons via law@robsols.co.uk www.robsols.co.uk, 029 2023 7777
What is the second type of Lasting Power of Attorney? A health and wellbeing LPA gives an appointed person the power to make decisions about your health and wellbeing. This may include your care routine and medical care Style of the city 61

HEALTH & WELLBEING
Ear, Nose and Throat Conditions Affecting the Family
Nuffield Health Cardiff and Vale Hospitals treats both children and adults for a range of ear, nose and throat (ENT) problems.
E
asily treatable, if the conditions described below happen over a long period of time, or recur, your child may be referred for specialist treatment. To help to prevent against infections in the home, wash your hands frequently, don’t smoke around your child, and make sure they get the correct vaccinations. Recurrent tonsillitis is very common in children and it can often feel like a bad cold or flu for the sufferer. Tonsillitis is usually caused by a viral infection but can be bacterial, and it can display various symptoms including headache, cough, earache, problems swallowing, hoarseness, a high temperature and feeling nauseous. A daycase tonsillectomy procedure can improve quality of life and allow a return to normal school attendance. Glue ear is another very common condition found in otherwise healthy children, particularly in ages 2-5, where the middle ear gets filled with fluid, rather than air. This can lead to hearing loss, either in one or both ears, which can sound rather like what you hear when you cover your ears with your hands. If your child has symptoms of glue ear which have lasted over three months, treatment may be necessary, usually in the form of a minor surgical procedure. In children, sleep disordered breathing is usually caused by a relaxation in the throat while sleeping, allowing the tonsils or adenoids to obstruct it. Children who have sleep apnoea may snore, breathe through their 64 Style of the city
mouth and experience pauses in breath while sleeping, feel tired or sleepy during the day, have problems concentrating at school, and some display behavioural issues. In children, the commonest cause of sleep apnoea is enlarged tonsils or adenoids. Many cases are treated through surgical removal of the tonsil/adenoid tissue. Finally ear pinning, or pinnaplasty, for prominent ears is a procedure to improve the appearance of your child’s ears. It involves surgically changing the shape of the cartilage so the ear lies closer to your head. Nuffield Health Consultant ENT Surgeon Mr Ali Al Hussaini comments, ‘Pinnaplasty surgery usually achieves excellent results and has a profound effect in improving self-confidence’. In adults, three of the main treatable ENT conditions are septal deviation, chronic sinusitis/ nasal polyps, snoring and we are sometimes required to perform nasal reshaping, called rhinoplasty. Treatment for a deviated septum is surgery called a septoplasty. If you have breathing problems, frequent sinus infections or other bothersome symptoms, a septoplasty may be an option for you. If over the counter or GP treatments do not work for sinusitis, surgery to treat chronic sinusitis called functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) may be required. The ENT surgeon can widen your sinus openings by either removing some of the blocked tissue or inflating

a tiny balloon in the blocked sinuses and then removing it. Enquire about a referral to an ENT surgeon if snoring is affecting aspects of your life, such as causing excessive tiredness and poor concentration, or relationship problems with your partner. Excessive daytime sleepiness should be taken seriously, because it increases the risk of a road traffic accident - one in five road traffic accidents are caused by excessive sleepiness. ENT specialist Mr Ali Al-Hussaini explains, “Sleep apnoea is a condition that interrupts your breathing when you are asleep and the cessation of breathing automatically forces you to wake up in order to start breathing again. This interferes with your sleep and quality of life. To treat this there are a number of surgical options to improve the nasal airway or to improve the upper airway.” Nasal reconstruction or rhinoplasty, is surgery that changes the shape of the nose. This can be to improve appearance, breathing or both. Mr Al-Hussaini says ‘In contrast to filler injections that allow temporary contouring, rhinoplasty surgery achieves a permanent improvement in appearance including the removal of hump, reduction of size and tip enhanced rotation’. HEALTH & WELLBEING My name is Lauren, I am the founder of EMPOWERED WOMEN FITNESS. I am a mother, a qualified personal trainer, and fitness instructor. My passion is fitness and my mission is to help as many women as I possibly can to gain strength and confidence through the power of fitness. www.empoweredwomenfitness.co.uk
How fitness taught me gratitude Our Health & Fitness columnist, Lauren Green, is here to guide you through!
ratitude has always been a big part of my life, growing up I was always taught to appreciate what I did have instead of worrying about what I didn’t. But it was only until I started my fitness journey that I began to understand the true meaning of gratitude and how important being grateful truly is. When I started my fitness journey I didn’t appreciate my own body, I had no self confidence and no sense of self worth so I decided to take action. I starting exercising, the more I exercised the better I felt, the better I felt the more confident I became, the more confident I became the more I learnt my own self worth. When you start to look after your body through fitness, you begin to learn how amazing your body truly is. The more you look after your body through the form of fitness, the more your body can look after you. You set yourself goals, you work hard to reach those goals and when you do, you learn to appreciate your body and be grateful for everything your body can do.

SHIFT YOUR INTENSIONS FROM NEGATIVE TO POSITIVE- USE MOVEMENT AS A TOOL FOR SELF GROWTH/ SELF IMPROVEMENT & SELF LOVE & WATCH THE MAGIC HAPPEN!
HOW GRATITUDE MAGNIFIES FITNESS When women start their fitness journey with me, I encourage them to make a note of their “why”. 1. PLAN & PREPARE Have your week planned out, commit to your online classes, plan where and when you will get your steps in, get your weekly food shop done so your meals are ready. Consistency is key, and consistency is a lot more achievable with a plan prepared and in place.
HOW GRATITUDE MAGNIFIES FITNESS When women start their fitness journey with me, I encourage them to make a note of their “why”. Check your intensions The motive for your movement should come from a place of self love and gratitude to your body, exercise will enhance your health and your fitness physically and mentally. What is your motive for movement? I MOVE/ workout/ exercise because I love and appreciate my body. I am grateful for my good health and I express that gratitude through the form of movement. Before your next workout, check your intentions. If your intensions are to burn more calories because of something you eat or because you hate the way you look, the chances are you will begin to resent exercise. Exercise should be a celebration of what our bodys are capable of not a punishment for what we have eaten.
2. SET GOALS Set yourself daily mini goals to achieve. This could be upping your weights, your step count, improving your run time, trying a new workout. By setting yourself new mini goals and working to achieving them, every day will become and exciting challenge. 3. COMMUNITY/ TEAM By joining an online fitness community you are more likely to stay on track, your weekly schedule is planned out for you, you have your team to help motivate you and to discuss plans, goals, and tips, and of course it’s so much fun. By signing up and joining our online fitness community you will be held accountable for your actions, your fitness journey will become a lot more enjoyable, therefore your goals will become a lot more achievable. MEN ZEN at St. David's Spa The Spa at voco St. David’s, Cardiff has launched a new and bespoke range of organic male spa treatments – the perfect treat for men who enjoy some self-care, and who are looking to relax and unwind.
ents can choose from a choice of three treatments which are sure to detoxify, nourish, firm and hydrate skin – an ‘ishga’ Hot Stone Massage, ishga Deep Tissue Massage, or ishga Facial, with prices starting from just £85. All therapies, as their names suggest, use ishga organic skincare which has been developed in the Outer Hebrides using the purest Scottish seaweed combined with natural spring water from the Isle of Lewis. For centuries seaweed has been used for its natural healing and therapeutic properties. With plenty of vitamins, minerals and powerful natural antioxidants which are considered essential for maintaining glowing skin, the mineral-rich seaweed extract (known to preserve the skin’s collagen) is blended with cucumber extract, macadamia, jojoba, aloe vera and lemon peel. For chaps who take a particular interest in their grooming routine and who enjoy a little pampering at home, Ishga products are now also available to purchase at The Spa. Men's Marine Cream (£60) daily moisturiser, Men's Exfoliating Face Wash (£28) refreshing cleanser and Men’s Beard & Shave Oil (£49) help skin recover from the rigours of everyday life. Products are cruelty free, suitable for all skin types and make an ideal gift! Speaking of the dedicated male therapies, Phil Bailey, Spa Manager, The Spa at Voco St. David’s, Cardiff says: “There is no doubt, relaxing is good for the soul – and the skin. All too often spa treatments are considered more feminine, so our new therapies and products specifically
G
68 Style of the city
for our male guests offer the perfect pamper for chaps who enjoy a little self-care, as well as those who want some peace away from the pressures of their everyday lives. The invigorating massage using heated basalt stones allows the treatment to work deeper, easing tension and ensuring total relaxation. Stones are placed on chakra energy points to uplift and create a sense of wellbeing. For men with tension, aches, pains and sports injury, the deep tissue massage therapy focuses on realigning the inner, deeper layers of muscles by applying long, slow and firmer strokes on specific areas. Finally, men often suffer as a result of shaving, so a facial to help hydrate and revitalise a complexion offers some much needed TLC.” Those indulging in some spa self-care may wish to extend their ‘me time’ and treat themselves to something off the restaurant menu too, such as the mouth-watering Celtic Pride beef burger, with tomato jam, Welsh cured bacon, Welsh rarebit, served in a brioche bun with fries; with a Peroni beer for just £23! The Spa’s new male grooming offering is perfect for Father’s Day (Sunday 19th June 2022 – you can thank us for the reminder!), so why not think of spa for Pa when deciding what to get the special man in your life. Whether it’s the father figure you’ve always looked up to, a Daddyto-be, first-time Dad or even Grandad! TURN'D UP FITNESS
Time to get Turn’d Up!
Shekira Johnson introduces us to the dance fitness phenomenon taking the world by storm - online or at a gym near you. y name is Shekira Johnson and I am the Founder and Director of Turn'd Up Fitness. We run classes all over South Wales, and an On Demand platform so people can get their Turn'd Up fix at home. Why Turn'd Up? Firstly, it’s fun. Imagine a night out minus the hangover. It’s about energy, empowerment and community. And what’s more, it's an amazing all-over workout - you can burn up to 900 calories in a class! And we do it to the best tunes - R&B, dancehall and chart music. If you’ve heard it in a club, or on the radio, you’ll be dancing to it in Turn’d Up. A bit of background for you: I’m a Cardiff born-andbred drama graduate with a huge interest in health and fitness - I’m qualified in 22 different fitness programmes. Back in 2017 I was teaching my class in Penarth Leisure Centre and the queue for it was out of the door! I had a 'lightbulb moment' when I realised there was a gap in the market for a workout combining dance, fitness and drama. And so Turn'd Up was born! I now have over XXX instructors teaching it in the South Wales area and the Turn'd Up movement (my ‘Girl Gang’) is growing - classes are popping up all over the UK, and even as far as Australia! When I talk about Turn’d Up (and I do. A lot!), people say to me 'But I can't dance. I've got two left feet!' Believe me, it doesn't matter. You don’t have to have dance experience. The routines are broken down so everyone, no matter what their ability, can learn them and feel like they’re in their own music video. There's no judgement or competition in our classes. I train my instructors to make everyone feel
M
welcome and at ease. Add to this the lights are off and the disco lights are on and you can set your inner J.Lo or Beyoncé free. You "know" she’s in there somewhere! What’s more, if you want to try out Turn’d Up in your living room first, brush up on your skills, or simply prefer to exercise in the privacy of your own home, you can subscribe to our Turn'd Up On Demand platform. On Demand has our amazing dance routines and tutorials, but it's so much more than that. My vision was to make it a holistic experience – so you can access yoga, meditations, nutrition plans and selfimprovement reading lists, all on one platform. I launched On Demand during Covid-19 - like all entrepreneurs, I had to pivot to meet members' changing needs, and my gang were missing their classes! Even as we started venturing out and about again, there was clearly still a need for an online community. Since Covid, everyone is more aware of the power of technology, not to mention the importance of physical and mental wellbeing and of taking time for yourself. Turn'd Up On Demand meets all those needs. Feeling pressured for time? (Who isn’t!) On Demand can fit in around you. I'm so proud of my community, on and offline, and I can't wait to see my Girl Gang grow even more. What are you waiting for – we can’t wait to dance with you!

HEALTH & WELLBEING
How much is too much? ''He had a brain the size of a planet when we met. Now he has alcoholic dementia and has forgotten he is dying. So long as he can get the drink he doesn’t seem to mind.'' – Anonymous. HISTORY OF ALCOHOL An addictive poison that would certainly be banned if it were discovered now, alcohol has been fermented from fruits and plants for 6,000 years – four thousand years before Julius Caesar invaded Britain. Like other mind-altering drugs, it was originally used in magic rituals and religious festivals, rites of passage or moments of cultural crisis, with strict codes of behaviour and penalties for abuse. In some societies, alcohol is indeed banned. In others, community values help keep its use within safe limits. But in many societies, those values 74 Style of the city
have lost their grip as many people turn to the airbrushed world of the internet rather than to family and friends and drink alone without even the rules of the street or the pub to guide them. Unless you have religious or personal restrictions, a beer with friends or a glass of wine with dinner is generally not an issue. The problem starts when you become dependent on alcohol to cope with your life. To deal with the harm this brings, the individual needs to be treated within their own community so they can find a new niche for the new them, hopefully with support from existing family and social networks.

CLOSING THE PUBS IS NOT THE ANSWER In 2020, money was short, everything was closed and people were forced by Covid to stay at home. Yet in England and Wales alcohol caused more deaths than in any of the previous 20 years - and 20% more than in 2019. According to the World Health Organisation, more than 200 diseases and disorders, and a massive 25% of deaths in the 20 to 39 age group in Europe, are caused by alcohol. In the UK, 33,000 people die every year from alcohol-related incidents or health conditions, and 10% have
STEPHEN TRUELOVE
LOW RISK LIMIT: 14 units of alcohol = 6 large glasses of wine or 6 pints of beer per week spread over at least 3 days There is No Safe Limit
an alcohol use disorder (AUD). In Wales, 45% of men and 34% of women admit to exceeding the guidelines for low risk drinking and 14% of adults have been exposed to alcohol misuse during childhood. In Wales and worldwide, the resulting damage is greatest in the most deprived areas, with men at least twice as likely to die as women.
ALCOHOL MISUSE, ESPECIALLY BINGE DRINKING From falls, fights and road accidents to liver disease, stroke, dementia and death, the damage to health and life is huge. The idea that a little bit of alcohol is good for you has been debunked: there is no safe limit and even low level drinking increases the risk of breast cancer and other conditions. Unborn children miscarried or damaged for life, domestic violence and neglect, divorce, homelessness, unemployment, suicide – the cost to the individual and those around them is unending. SO WHY DO PEOPLE DO IT? Alcohol is actually a depressant and a poison, but a small amount can help you relax, feel more sociable and less shy with other people, especially potential partners. But if you can’t stop there, relationships may be damaged rather than improved and damage starts to build up.
IT’S HOW PEOPLE GET THROUGH LIFE, WHAT THEY DO TO COPE. Many first begin drinking in their mid-teens, often under pressure from other youngsters with the idea that it is somehow grown-up and fun. From drinking to feel less shy and more like
you belong, it gradually becomes a crutch for personal inadequacies and the go-to solution for emotional crisis and rejection. As drink becomes the knee-jerk reaction to life’s challenges, frequency and quantity increases. Children of alcoholic parents are four times more likely to become alcohol dependent as adults. Whether or not there is any genetic component, it’s likely the only coping mechanism they know – and many will have experienced serious trauma in early life. Many people are in denial about their alcohol problem. It’s like a secret friend who helps them cope. They may drink alone and try to hide the evidence by stashing bottles in unlikely places. To successfully beat dependency on alcohol or any other drug, we need to understand why we drink, what we’re trying to avoid and why we turned to alcohol to help. Only then can we get off the hook and find new coping mechanisms to deal with life’s challenges.
HOW CAN YOU RECOGNISE AN ALCOHOLIC? You can’t. The stereotyped shabby, shambling figure with a bottle of cheap wine in their pocket is the tip of the iceberg. There are plenty of “functioning alcoholics” with good jobs, big houses, posh cars, who will survive much longer than their less affluent counterparts, but without help it will get them in the end. HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED HELP? Try the assessment tool at auditscreen.org
Do you regularly drink more than 14 units in a week? Do you ever feel you actually need a drink? Is it hard to stop once you start? Have you ever got into trouble because of drinking? Are other people concerned about your drinking? Do you drink more than you can afford? Do you feel
guilty about how much you drink? Do you need a drink first thing after a heavy night’s drinking? Do you ever not remember what happened the night before? Yes to more than a couple of those questions and you probably do need help. Realising you have a problem is the first step to getting help. The next is to get it. Try your GP or a qualified counsellor. Be open and honest - we are here to help, not to judge.
TIPS FOR CUTTING DOWN If you are not yet dependent on alcohol, simple steps may be enough
• Set a limit on how much you will drink • Take a fixed amount of money and don’t borrow • Drink more slowly • Avoid kitty systems or buying rounds • Alternate with water or non alcoholic drinks •Go for smaller, lower strength drinks • Ask family and friends to help you • Cut back a bit each day • Cut out every other day, so you never drink on two consecutive days • Always keep to the low risk limit of 14 units a week spread over 3 days.
A NEW LIFE FOR THE NEW YOU Getting off the drink, fitting back into society with all its challenges is another. Find some healthy and interesting activities that keep you busy and away from old haunts and temptations. Ask friends and family who don’t drink for help. You will soon be on your way to a new, fulfilling life. © Stephen Truelove 2022 Love Life Love You. Steve is available to work online and at various locations. Diverse Talents
Located on the historic area of Cardiff Bay. Blackwater Gallery is the palce for emerging Welsh artits. verlooking Cardiff Barrage and the Marina, Blackwater Gallery boasts a stunning view of Cardiff Bays ever-changing landscape. An historically industrial area, Blackwater Gallery’s architecture pays homage to the mining and shipping history of Cardiff Bay and the Welsh Valleys. With exposed beams and concrete pillars left raw, the gallery stands as a visual nod to the coal blackened landscape of Cardiff ‘Tiger’ Bay docks at the turn of the century. Their underlying aim to draw influence from the enterprising and industrious sprit of the welsh people at the time. The end result is a unique and powerful backdrop to the bold contemporary artwork that Blackwater Gallery offers. It’s this enterprising spirit that Blackwater harnesses that sits at the centre of its vision. Their aim is to bring bold and emerging talent to the forefront in Cardiff and Wales by showcasing expressive original artwork in a spectrum of mediums.
O

In an art world that is often difficult to navigate by newcomers, they believe that art should be celebrated, enjoyed, and most importantly accessible to everyone. Their latest exhibition, UNDOD saw the gallery present a body of work from five UK based emerging artists. The exhibition saw the gallery showcase work covered by a diverse range of visual disciplines. Each artist being selected for their unique aesthetic style and individuality. Although the exhibition has now ended, all artists represented now hold a body of available work in Blackwater’s online gallery space. A key element of Blackwater’s vision is to provide a spotlight for emerging Welsh talent, launching and developing the careers of Welsh artists to a global audience. Exhibited at UNDOD, artist Ian Mackenzie is the latest Welsh painter to join the Gallery. Based in South Wales, Mackenzie works predominately in oils on canvas, his focus is detail and producing a
photorealistic style. For UNDOD his subject matter focussed on themes and historical elements associated with the Welsh community, history, and heritage. With his original collection receiving critical acclaim, several of the exhibited pieces have now been sold to collectors in the UK and Internationally. Following on from his success at UNDOD, the gallery will soon be bringing the ‘Heritage’ collection to the forefront for Mackenzie at Blackwater. This signed limited edition collection will see a selection of Makenzie’s work
made available as giclee canvas prints. This release arrives shortly after Blackwater has recently been awarded membership to the Arts Council of Wales ‘Collectorplan’ programme, an initiative sponsored by the Welsh Government, Collectorplan offers support in the form of interest free credit to those looking to purchase contemporary arts in Wales. Another recent addition to Blackwater is Welsh artist Makenzy Beard. Beard is a young Welsh portrait artist who received both national and international recognition since her now instantly recognisable portrait ‘John Tucker’ was exhibited as part of the Royal Academy Young Artist’s Summer Show in London. Beginning her career at just 14, Blackwater Gallery has been committed to guiding and supporting the young painter while providing a platform for her to share her work with collectors on a global scale. With a passion to connect and encourage conversation at their events, it’s not just stereotypical exhibitions that take place at
BLACKWATER GALLERY
Blackwater. The gallery is actively invested in building a community by engaging and collaborating with locally led creative projects. As part of their latest event, the gallery worked with Well Wagon. A community based mobile art space, Well Wagon work to provide on site workshops and creative opportunities for participants to explore their internal responses to the external events around them. Throughout the rest of the year the Blackwater has a wealth of events expanding their vision to create a community driven gallery. With open call exhibitions for UK artists, and an exciting collaboration with ‘Her Mark’ a programme that looks to support and empower women and those who identify as women, forming part of the events schedule in the forthcoming months. In addition to their values around community and emerging art, Blackwater has sought to expand on the availability of original contemporary expressionist artwork in the UK. The gallery has housed expressionist works from artists both recognised and collected globally. In 2021 the Gallery undertook sole UK representation of Trinidadborn artist Miles Regis based
in Los Angeles, a prolific multidisciplined creative. This summer the Gallery will host an exhibition of neo-expressionist painter Frank Schroeder. A powerful creative, Schroeders work is likened to that of Basquiat and Schnabel. The exhibition will cover a large body of Schroeders work, as well as a capsule collection of his clothing line, the exhibition will incorporate musical, interactive, and community driven elements, making the exhibition an experience not to be missed.

M
y name is Sameer Gangoli and I have been taking pictures on my phone of random things here and there, for as far as I can remember. During lockdown I decided to take on the hobby seriously, like many others I needed to focus on something I enjoyed which has always been photography. Buying myself a professional camera, I created a separate photography Instagram account called ‘Grandsnap’. Since then, I have specialised in Landscapes, streets photography and currently I have been doing some portrait shoots as well. My most noticeable achievement to date is one of my photos being published on the front cover of a 82 Style of the city
local Cardiff Magazine. I am a hotelier by profession and photography, even though my secondary job and, hobby has helped me express my emotions through visuals, and has served as a stress buster to cope with some unwanted emotions. My goal as any aspiring photographer is to create images that make people happy, and more importantly create a visual story telling experience for my audience.

I have been building up my stock to ensure I can supply large numbers of items such as glass charger plates, cutlery, candles, glassware, napkins, table runners and centrepieces in many different colours and styles. I have to say that my tablescapes
are the most requested job to come in. I absolutely love designing and planning how the tables will be displayed for the wedding breakfast. I ask clients to contact me via my Instagram @kbeventstyling or email me on info@kb-eventstyling.co.uk to arrange a complimentary consultation, where I can get as much information as possible before putting a quote together. Once all is finalised, I will then do a mock set up and take photographs for you to see how everything will look on the big day. Most venues will supply packages but it's my job to really bring the room to life by adding in a colour theme and add the personal touches. Styling with only the best, beautiful, classic pieces. Items which are minimal but make a huge impact. Weddings for me should be elegant and timeless. I want my clients to look back
on their photos and see items which haven't aged or gone out of fashion. Rooms to look understated and enduring. Tables to be at their finest to compliment the surroundings and feel of the venue. Lastly, the most important part, the styling must reflect the bride & groom and have a sense of their personalities in everything. I want their guests to feel them in the room before they have even arrived. Event styling is something I thrive on and have enjoyed doing for many years. I have had the pleasure to be part of dressing many weddings in venues all over South Wales & West. Hey Guys, My name is Shelma Dei, my love for food stems from my childhood and also being rather fussy when it comes to food. I am very passionate about food and love to create dishes that spring into mind. I love to experiment with different ingredients, often things you wouldn’t expect to put together. COOKING ByDei Shelma Dei shares her ‘butter pecans’ recipe I am not the typical baker so I thought I would be a little adventurous and try my luck with baking some homemade cookies. I thought of my childhood and what favourite biscuits I loved and devoured during my youth. The top three that came to mind were: Maryland cookies, Jammy Dodgers and Boasters. Boasters were my absolute favourite rather generous cookie made up of chunks of hazelnuts. I decided to try and make a similar cookie. I thought of what I could add to a cookie, first choice was walnuts but then I decided on pecan nuts due to their pretty autumn brown colouring. I must say the process of making cookies is fascinating to me; might I add, the large amounts of butter used to make cookies, I had no idea! Happy cooking ! INGREDIENTS
• 1 1/2 cups (185g) chopped pecans • 1 1/2 tablespoons (21g) butter FOR THE BUTTER PECAN COOKIES:
• 1 cup (227g) unsalted butter • 2 cups plus 2 tablespoons (287g all-purpose flour (dip and sweep method) • 2 tablespoons (14g) cornstarch • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 cup (99g) granulated sugar • 1 cup (198g) packed dark or light brown sugar • 2 large eggs at room temperature • 2 teaspoons vanilla T O D E C O R AT E (optional):

METHOD Sauté the chopped pecans and butter in a skillet over medium heat until fragrant and toasted, about 3-4 minutes. Stir frequently and keep an eye on the small crumbs, they will brown quicker than the bigger pieces. Set aside to cool. FOR THE BUTTER PECAN COOKIES:
Brown the butter: Heat the butter in a light colored skillet over medium-high heat. It will come to a boil. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until the solid particles at the bottom turn golden brown. Keep an eye on it carefully towards the end, it can burn quickly. Immediately pour into a large mixing bowl to stop the browning. Let cool slightly, about 10 minutes. Whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking soda, and salt in a bowl. Whisk sugars into cooled browned butter. Whisk in vanilla and eggs until thoroughly combined. Pour dry ingredients into bowl and stir until no streaks of flour remain. Stir in buttered pecans. Cover with plastic wrap, pressing the plastic down on the surface of the dough. Chill for at least 3 hours and up to 3 days. If you chill longer than 3 hours, let dough sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes so the dough is easier to scoop. TO BAKE THE COOKIES:
Preheat the oven to 350° F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll dough into balls, about 3 tablespoons each (60g). Place 2 inches apart on baking sheet. For optional decoration see notes. Bake on the middle rack until the edges are set and just beginning to turn golden brown, about 9-12 minutes. The tops of the cookies should still be quite soft when you remove them from the oven, and may even appear slightly underbaked in center. They will firm up while cooling.
