Paul Wyeth, Marine Photographer

Marine photographer Paul Wyeth has a talent for being in the right place at the right time, and his stunning sailing images have graced the covers of Yachting World and Motor Boat & Yachting magazines, along with many others in the UK and overseas.

He started sailing at an early age in Island waters with his family, before studying design at University, teaching sailing and working for the RYA. He says, “I fell into photography after watching the photographers at sailing events, and thinking ‘I can do that’.” With no formal training, but the ability to capture the action, he began taking pictures from his dad’s RIB. “By 2003 I was getting more commercial work and it grew organically from there. I’ve travelled to Europe, the Caribbean, Oman, but my most unusual job was shooting commercial oil survey vessels in Kazakhstan.”

In 2019 Paul captured 40 yachting events in Cowes alone, and says, “The Round the Island Race is a spectacle you really can’t miss. It’s always amazing to shoot, although the sheer number of boats can be overwhelming. Cowes Week is equally impressive, with so much going on. It makes you appreciate the depth of talent and experience needed to sail here. It’s so competitive, and the tides and conditions keep things interesting. Shooting around Cowes always reminds me what a great place it is to sail.”

Paul also takes commissions from private yacht owners, families, and has recently diversified to outdoor sports, architectural images and drone work. He says striving for the perfect shot is what keeps his passion for photography alive. “The shot is always in your head – a yacht bursting through a wave, or crew grinding a winch when the light is perfect. It rarely all comes together, but every time you go out you’re always searching for that perfect moment.”
