Protecting the waters around Cowes

Cowes provides easy access to both The Solent and Medina Estuary. These beautiful and very different environments harbour a wide variety of wildlife, and it’s our responsibility to make as little impact on their waters and surrounding shores as possible.

Since 2005, The Green Blue, a joint environmental programme between the Royal Yachting Association and British Marine, has helped boat users, boating businesses, clubs and training centres to reduce their impact on coastal and inland waters, wildlife and habitats. At thegreenblue.org.uk you can find easy to follow advice to make boating in the UK as sustainable as possible.

‘How Degrading!’ shows just how long some items take to break down in the water.

We all love the water, and can all make sure we dispose of any waste responsibly on shore, aiming to reduce, reuse or recycle it where possible.

How Degrading!

Whether you are enjoying the estuary from the water or land, it’s easy to help conserve the area’s valuable habitats by carrying out your activities responsibly. Observing simple rules such as not disturbing the wildlife, making yourself aware of the estuary’s sensitive areas, respecting no landing signs and reducing speed to limit your wash will ensure we can all enjoy the special birds and other creatures that thrive in the Medina Estuary for many years to come.
