“At the Lantern Clinic, we focus on discovering the root of the problem and treating the cause of the disease. Functional Medicine is a remarkable practice and gaining in popularity as it’s patient-centred and involves understanding the origins of illness and the prevention and treatment of complex symptoms.”

Five Ways to Improve your health:
Functional medicine determines how and why disease occurs and restores health by addressing the root causes of disease for each individual. Gaining small but consistent improvements in key lifestyle areas can have transformative effects.
1) Sleep:
Gain awareness of your current state of sleep. Don’t accept suffering from insomnia or waking up non-refreshed. This could have negative long-term effects on your health. Aim to go to bed early, reduce exposure to blue light from electronic devices and seek advice if these simple steps don’t help.
2) Exercise:
Daily exercise has a range of demonstrated health benefits. Aim for 30 min of brisk walking at least five times a week. If you prefer to run or go to the gym, this could be in addition to daily walking. The key is to keep your body moving to combat long hours of sitting down. If you work from home, consider a standing desk.
3) Nutrition:
No single factor has more impact on health and disease than what we eat. In functional medicine treatment, we often start addressing chronic disease with a targeted nutritional plan. Remember to ‘eat the rainbow’ and challenge yourself to eat a range of brightly-coloured plant-based foods every day such as fruit, vegetables, nuts/seeds, whole grains, beans, herbs and spices. Some of the most potent benefits of food come from phytochemicals (naturally occurring plant chemicals responsible for the taste, colour and smell of the food).
4) Stress:
Chronic stress impacts health in a myriad of ways. Stress management is a powerful way to improve physical and mental health. Try to take 24 hours every week, completely disconnected from work. This includes work-related emails, chats or messages! It’s tricky but the effect on your productivity and overall energy is going to be amazing. I call them free days!
5) Relationships:
It’s scientifically proven that social isolation can increase the risk of several chronic diseases. Having a robust network of healthy, dependable relationships improves health outcomes for all ages. Start the year by writing down the 5-10 most important people in your life (family, friends, colleagues, partners). Against each name write what action you could take to improve, reconnect and grow your relationship. Be specific, set a timeframe and set an intention to focus on these relationships.
