Cape Town is usually the scene of many international film crews and A-list celebrities, but Johannesburg is catching up. Recently the crew and actors of a new movie, The Bang Bang Club, arrived in the city to start filming. Some of the Hollywood stars from the movie, Ryan Phillippe, Malin Akerman and South African born actor Frank Rauthenbach all partied at FTV Sandton in April. There are certain people who just have it. Be it the fashion designer who confidently inhabits his or her design ethos without any deviation, or the thrifty shopper who effortlessly throws together an outfit from a seemingly incompatible mix of garments. Kate Moss has it, Coco Chanel had it, and the Olsen twins seem to be continually fashion-forward too.

StyleScoop contributor Kate Gerke sat down and chatted to Rozanne Immerman about her clothes, her style and her passion for fashion.

KG: What do you communicate through your designs? RI: Individualism, colour, life, collage, fun and confidence. Have fun! Enjoy getting dressed in the morning! Most South African women’s style is emotionless. Take chances and enjoy your clothes because what you wear can change your day.

KG: Your clothes flirt with quirkiness and off-beat individuality, how do you keep the designs fresh and when do you know to stop and not go over board with the embellishments?

KG: What would you like your fans to feel when wearing one of the garments from Rozanne and Pushkin?

RI: Ha-ha, perhaps some think I do go overboard, but I do think I’m learning. I keep my ideas fresh by not being stubborn, but rather by listening to my clients and seeing what they want to wear.

RI: I want them to feel happy, special and improve their day with a new sense of excitement.

KG: What sets the Rozanne and Pushkin label apart from other South African brands?

KG: Where do you find your inspiration?

RI: I’m very ambitious and love, love, love what I do. With regards to my age, perhaps my energy levels are higher and I’m not set in my ways.

RI: From anything and everything. It can be from a piece of vintage lace, to a song, to a period in history. I have to be aware of current trends, but I always try to put my own personal twist on things. KG: Where do you see South African fashion going? RI: I see South Africans in the future learning how to style their own outfits and having fun with getting dressed in the mornings. KG: What is your design philosophy? RI: Provide clothes for real people who want something to make them happy and brighten up their day. KG: What do your shops mean to you? RI: My shops are what drive me and have taught me more than any varsity course could have. I love Rozanne & Pushkin and my clients, that’s what gets me out of bed in the morning. KG: Who are you as a businesswoman? RI: I am no longer just designing, I am also a buyer, importing from Greece, London, Thailand, Australia, France and Italy. So I design, buy, do my own book-keeping and own the 2 stores, working in Johannesburg.

I realise that I have lots of mistakes to make and I’m willing to adapt in order to improve my business. I also think that some designers who work in studios get carried away and design for themselves, instead of the person wearing the garment. Spending so much time in the shop, I have become very aware of what people want and unflattering silhouettes, even if modern, is not one of them. KG: What makes you tingle with excitement as far as life and/ or your designs go? RI: Before it was designing a range and then seeing it on the runway. Now its having repeat customers coming into the store wearing Rozanne & Pushkin garments, and walking out happy and excited to wear their new outfits. It’s the best! And it’s happening more often than ever; I have even seen people in Cape Town wearing garments from the shop. KG: What to you is the definition of style? RI: Style is individual and is owned by someone who takes pride in her appearance, knows how to layer her outfits and feels comfortable and confident. Life is way too short to wear a boring outfit.

on’t you just hate it when you go to a club in your favourite, sky-high, killer heels only to end up walking barefoot because your feet just cant handle more than an hour of dancing? While many of you will say “stuff it” and walk barefoot on the dirty dance floor; that by the way is probably covered in beer and cigarette ash, I consider myself to be a bit of a snob in that department. Personally I’d rather suffer with blistering feet than walk around barefoot at a party - unless of course, its a pool party we’re talking about - Not even I’m that bad! So, I’m sure you can imagine my excitement and approval when I was sent a pair of Cherry FUPS to try. FUPS, which stands for Fold-Ups are cleverly designed ballet flats that, as the name implies, fold up, allowing you store them, even in your evening purse. They come in two shades (black and champagne) and are made from a satin fabric that makes them very comfortable - Trust me ladies, I put these on to review and forgot I was wearing them. The soles have been specially designed with two separate pieces, to allow them to fold up, and the elasticated trim ensures even your throbbing feet will be comfy. So you can stay on the dance floor and still look stylish and in-tact. So you’re thinking - genius, but now what do you do with your heels? A ten year high school reunion and a birthday all rolled into one weekend creates a perfect opportunity to look back, reminiscent and take stock of life learns EVEGENIA POPLETT

currently live in Johannesburg, but I went to an all-girls boarding school in Natal. A reunion and a birthday were a perfect excuse for my husband and I to go away (without the kids), for a few days to the coast. I think my darling “Banker” saw this as an opportunity to distract me from the annual depression which descends upon me around my birthday. This year I made a conscious decision not to get depressed, or rather not to get too depressed on my birthday. I was not turning 30 yet, but entering a rather dangerously close territory of late 20’s. Attending a reunion was used as a destruction mechanism. Oddly enough, it worked as it kept me far more focused on meeting my old friends and firmly ignoring the thoughts of an impending birthday.

Going back to school after ten years was truly surreal. Attending the chapel service and singing a school hymn was an experience in itself. At least we were allowed to use hymn books this time and no one was handing out detention slips for poor singing. I watched the Matric girls (not even sure they are called that anymore) with fascination in their full Matric regalia and I was amazed how young they looked! Surely ten years ago we didn’t look so little? Did we?

We had high tea in the quad area outside the library, eating the scones that I admired so much during my school years - always trying to hatch a plan of getting my hands on those sumptuous treats. The school tour followed. The Drama Room still had our hand prints on the wall...

yes the Legends of ’99! Some of the teachers that taught us remembered our class as being the naughtiest – what a great reputation! Old loyalties came to life as we walked past the Sport House notice boards. It was fascinating to see how much the school has changed, yet at the same time remained exactly the same. The highlight of the tour for me, was visiting the boarding house. I was amazed at the size of the rooms - surely they have shrunk? Reading the rules of the house, I was relieved that these rules no longer applied to me. The flood of memories and nostalgia, coupled with an amazing sense of belonging made me rather emotional. What is ten years after all? Sometimes it feels like it was only yesterday when I was locked away from the world in this convent. We had lunch in the dining hall, sitting with the class of ’89, ’79, ’69, and ’59. A framed photograph of our class in Matric was placed on the table. Oh dear, we did in fact look very little. We also looked awkward, naive and immature. Gladly, we have changed. We now look more refined, more composed, more sophisticated and just more comfortable with ourselves. I also remembered how ten years ago my mom picked me up from school after my art exam and we went out for dinner to celebrate my 18th birthday. This memory brought tears to

my eyes, since my mother passed away a few years back after a long and torturous fight with cancer. A ten year flash back: university, graduation, marriage, kids, laughter and tears; I made friends and I lost friends. I faced fears and acknowledged failures. I had successes and regrets and only relatively recently found my passion. So yes, a lot can happen in ten years. All in all, I had the most amazing birthday and I am glad I went to the reunion. It somehow helped to soften the blow of turning a year older. It is ironic, but I felt so good about my life. I am relieved I am no longer a child. People are finally starting to take me seriously. Now is the time to get noticed and make a difference in the world. I simply must add that I look a lot better now than I did at 18. I am healthy and full of energy - what’s not to celebrate? S

few weeks ago I had a puncture. I was heading up Fields Hill and suddenly noticed a strange noise coming from the right passenger side. I immediately knew I had a flat tyre. Now, for those of you who don’t know Fields Hill – It is a steep and extremely twisty pass that takes you from Pinetown up into Kloof. If you are familiar with the hill, you will know that there is no safe pull-over space and it’s packed with trucks and other traffic. Stopping to change the flat on the hill is a definite no-no. So I slowed to a crawl and made my way to the top in search of a safe spot for my pit stop. Fortunately at the top of Fields Hill there is an ideal pull over section not too far from the shops and petrol stations. I got the flat tyre off in a time that Lewis Hamilton’s pit crew would be proud of, and dug around in the boot for the spare. I drive a Ford Focus Diesel and I’ve only had the car for about four months. And like most complacent motorists I haven’t both-

ered to check the spare or the contents of the changing kit. Thankfully everything was there, including the spare wheel, which in my Ford’s case is an embarrassingly skinny “space saving” type. A biscuit wheel in every sense, emblazoned with “WARNING-DO NOT EXCEED 80KM P/HOUR”. Nowadays more and more of the cars on our roads are European Spec. In other words they come with all the kit that people in Europe would get on their cars. Same radio and CD player, same climate control features, rain sensing wipers, light sensitive headlights etc. The trend in car design these days, is to fit massive wheel and tyre combinations, which generously fill the wheel arches and give it that sporty look. Nice if you’re on the race-track-smooth roads of Europe, not so much on our pot holed atrocities we call roads. However, I’ll be the first to say that it does look good; big, shiny alloy wheels to me, can make even the ugliest car look a lot more attractive. But there is literally a huge price to pay when it comes to replacing the tyres. After phoning half a dozen tyre retailers, demanding the best

price for my tyre replacement, I settled on a whopping price of R1689, fitted and balanced. Some of the competition even quoted me nearly R2000.00. Good thing I was sitting down when they told me the price, otherwise I would have been out for the count. You must understand that the wheel and tyre combination on my car is nothing fancy; it is the standard rim and tyre that came fitted on the car. It also turns out that the tyre on my Focus is a very rare size and is used on very few vehicles.

Now for most people tyres are just there for the sole purpose of attaching the car to the road – essentially that’s exactly what they do. For the better part of their life they go ignored until someone eventually points out that they’re knackered and in need of replacement. So what do you do when your tyres need a new life? Without going into too much technical detail, let’s look at passenger car

Allow me to simplify; “205” refers to the width of the tyre, not the diameter, but rather the width of the tyre if you are looking at the tread pattern. So 205 actually means 205mm or 20.5cm.

“50” refers to the tyre profile and in car-talk you can have either a low profile or a high profile tyre. Generally, a passenger car has low profiles while off-road vehicles have higher profile tyres - and for good reason too. A passenger car will spend most of its time on the road, whereas a 4x4 won’t. If you take your sporty Mini Cooper off-road, the chances of getting a puncture are high because the tyre fitted is not suited for off-road driving. The tyre profile is the space between the rim and the edge of the tyre. Got it? Some cars are fitted with ultra low profile tyres

for example 225/35. These are usually fitted on very fast cars, or cars that demand excellent grip and road holding, but are increasingly found on more and more Citi Golf’s around SA, especially in Durban. The “17” refers to 17 inches. This represents the size of the rim that the tyre can be fitted to. Your car might have 14 inch rims or if you have a Range Rover Sport, you’ve probably got 20 inches. “93” refers to the load index and “W” refers to the tyre’s speed rating. Another marking on your tyre to look out for is the tread ware indicator. This is sometimes marked by a “TW”, somewhere on the tyre or by an arrow, but sometimes it’s not marked at all. The tread ware indicator is usually found in the deepest section of the tread and will look like a raised section in the tread groove. It usually runs the width of the tyre. The purpose of these markings is to indicate the wear of the tread of your tyre. Once the surrounding rubber has worn to the level of these markings; it’s time to look for replacements. It’s a good idea to check with your insurance as to the lowest acceptable tread permissible on your tyres. In case of an accident this is important because if it’s too low most insurers will not cover you. Tyre manufacturers will also print the maximum possible pressure the tyres can be inflated to; this doesn’t mean you should do this. Rather refer to your cars’ handbook or the sticker on the inside driver’s door. This is a good place to start and they usually give you the pressures for laden and unladen.

out sooner rather than later - you will save yourself time and money in the end. When it comes to buying a new car don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask the salesman if the rim and tyre combination on the car is the standard size, or if it’s the more expensive option. Check whether the car comes with a full size spare, a “space saver”, or none in the case of BMW, who prefer to fit Run Flat tyres. Run Flat tyres can be safely driven up to a certain speed even if they are punctured; however they cannot be repaired and are hugely expensive - upwards of R2000.00 per tyre. Make sure you are familiar with how to change a tyre. Get your husband or boyfriend to show you and practice it one day so you are confident you can do it yourself. Or you can just show some cleavage and a bit of leg to the first male motorist who passes you on the freeway and get him to do it for you instead.

If you fit new rims and tyres to your car, check with the salesman to get the correct tyre pressures. Also buy yourself a good quality tyre pressure gauge and check your tyre pressures often, once a month at least. Asking the petrol pump attendant is all good and well, but fore court gauges are often inaccurate. Check the pressure when you set off in the morning, when your tyres are cold, not when you get to the service station after a long journey. The heat in tyres will give a different pressure reading to when they are cold. Over or under inflated tyres can lead to uneven pressure which, in the long run just costs you more as you will have to replace them quicker. Balancing and alignment is crucial and should be done every 10/15 000km. So if you car pulls hard to one side of the road, or there is a bad shudder from the steering wheel, get it checked

When you do have a puncture, take the tyre to a reputable dealer and ask them to check it. Most of them will tell you that you need a new tyre straight away. Ask them to show you where the puncture is. Generally if the hole is in the shoulder or sidewall it can’t be fixed, as it can be dangerous. But, if it’s in the tread section of the tyre, it could probably be plugged. So double check before your replace.

A good rule of thumb if you have to replace a single tyre is to replace it with the original brand that was on the car. Replacing one tyre with a different brand and tread pattern could upset your cars alignment and/or handling. If you are replacing two or even four tyres then phone around for a better price or even a different brand and don’t be scared to haggle for a good price. Like with the cars, stay away from dodgy Indian and Chinese brands that you have never heard of. Stick with the mainstream suppliers and well known brands. Looking after the tyres on your car is relatively easy and simple and can save you a lot of money at the end of the day. I hope this article gives you a bit more information and a bit more confidence when buying a new tyre for your car. And when that weird dude with the dodgy cap in the street says, “Ahhh Lanie, dig your jammie, those big rims and low profile rubber looks schweet man!” you’ll know exactly what he’s on about. S
