I keep a bottle of Bio Oil in my shower and when I’ ve f inished shower ing, I appl y it onto my wet skin and drenc h my body in t he Bio Oil! There I was on Saturday afternoon, minding my own business when my eyes were diverted away from my yummy Pollo Pizza at Spigas, by my friend subtely poking me in the ribs and gesticulately wildly under the table at this young lass (she was literally about 1/2 my age – not something I often have the privelege of saying, given my tender 26 years of life). We simply had to take a picture. You know – it’s a matter of right place, right time. In this outfit’s case, wrong place, wrong time. Great for a bender on a Friday night, but lunch on a Saturday afternoon? Seriously? Really? Dress Code and appropriate dressing is my final lesson students.

Class adjourned.

I helped a friend of mine out at her recent Spring/ Summer launch for her boutique in Joburg. This was one of the ladies who came to the launch. She had a stunning pair of strappy heels from Edgars on, but paired it with what looked like her pj’s. Ill be the first to wax lyrical on the benefits (both mental and spiritual) of wearing one’s pj’s, but not to a launch at an exclusive boutique!

I’m dumbfounded when it comes to this particular “style“ of jeans.

Why do people go for the acid-wash, unnaturally distressed denim? It is wholly unflattering and looks cheap. If you are a devout follower of this style, repent, throw them away. The style this season (and forever really) is gently ripped with a neatly worn-in effect. Not chemically treated to within an inch of its life.

ied. One day it can be very feminine, another it’s very girly and cute. I am a skirt and dress addict and I hardly wear any trousers!

Shift dresses and cute little retro dresses are definitely my staples, no matter the season of the year.

I love the nautical theme, which is an epitome of a summer outfit for me. Another big part of my style is rock chick, which is probably influenced by the music I listen to…

It’s in a way expressing my music taste and I really enjoy heavy accessories and rock girl garments.

I first met “Honeybunny” on Chictopia, which led me to her really stunning blog. Her style is very different to a lot of the girls I have featured in the past. She loves skirts and dresses more than trousers, but mixes in a lot of rock-chick style. Meet the lovely, fabulously unique Natalia.

Whose style do you admire? I love Alexa Chung, Fearne Cotton and Kate Moss’ style. I’ve got to admit they’re my style icons.

What made you want to start a fashion blog? I’ve been watching other people’s style-blogs for some time and I have been very inspired by them.

And with that said, I believe that a DT piece is everlasting and eternal. It’s not about compromising my designs, fabrications or quality to produce a range that is “more affordable. It’s a matter of a more intimate and personal shopping, that gives you the eye for your own sense of style that will be everlasting. Buying a piece of clothing is a fashion investment!

Reinvent the way you look at things: An A-line, long skirt and high waisted harem pants can be pulled up to create a boob tube and belted in (to create) an all in one jumpsuit.

Borrow your boyfriend’s jeans and belt them with a great vintage find. Weave ribbons around straps on heels to create a whole new look. Have your clothes re-tailored by an inexpensive tailor to reshape old styles i.e; Have shoulder pads put into an old jacket to create this season’s Belmain jacket shape look. Have a clothes swap with friends.

Have you found that the global recession has influenced the way you design? Every collection consists of classic pieces, wearable pieces and avant garde pieces. My belief is that good design is sustainable and in a recession, people may be even more willing to spend on an item which is well designed and can carry them through year after year.

What advice can you give South African women on how to be a fabulous and chic Recessionista? Red lipstick makes any outfit look great. Buy cheap vintage scarves to accessorize handbags, worn around the neck or tied in a bow.

A few pieces go towards creating a wardrobe that offers you the ability to transform yourself to suit an occasion. Once you get to this stage, I do not think that your wardrobe should be without a timeless and well made black dress.

What advice can you give South African women on how to be a fabulous and chic Recessionista? Rather then shopping for many cheaper items cut back and spend only on items that are of great quality. These items will outlast a recession and you would have shopped wisely. If you are unable to afford the retail price, then bide your time and wait for sale time or shop around for an alternative. Women who have a wardrobe of great basics only need to add or accentuate their look by adding accessories or a colour to their wardrobe, which is part of the trend for the season. Do not buy items of clothing which do not compliment your figure, or if you have many doubts about wearing it. Impulsive shopping during recession sales is also not a wise thing to do.

My garments fall into a luxury goods sector and most people come to me because they appreciate the workmanship, quality and fine fabrics I use - Neither of these elements get any cheaper during a recession. My clients want things which have longevity and more importantly having something made, is far more emotionally engaging. Our ready-to-wear line is always timeless and classic and it has been like that since we started doing it. My clients get great wear out of their collections from us and I think this has held them in good stead in times of recession, as they are all well equipped to rely on their existing wardrobe from us to carry them through a recession. I do not compromise during a recession - its not good business practice, as there is life after tough economic times and our consumers have a certain level of expectation from us.

I think the shift is away from mass consumerism and spending frivolously on trends that change so quickly these days. If you buy garments that are beautifully made from natural fabrics and invest in designer pieces that convey your own personality as opposed to buying trends, the chances are you will get more wear from it over a longer period of time.

TWO’s winter collection had every model in one soft long sleeve tee and a pair of long tapered leggings, with one or two pieces over - Iin other words, add a voluminous tee, or a boyfriend cardi, a paper bag skirt etc. This concept was inspired by the recession and the idea that you don’t have to own millions of clothes to achieve a well put together look.

Have you found that the global recession has influenced the way you design? My collections have always focused on more classic items with a strong emphasis on quality, so a “budget” collection is never an option for us. We prefer to add value rather than cut costs. The recession has been good for consumer education - we have been and still are to some degree very wasteful consumers, all in the name of convenience, and I think it is time we all became more aware. The recession has proved valuable in forcing people to research and think more about their purchases.

I really love wearing layers and this looks really chic with beautiful accessories which can make any old outfit look great.

We made beautiful pleated scarves for this coming season and wearing one will make any outfit look new.

Have you found that the global recession TERRENCE BRAY has influenced the way you design? Gina: The best thing about the way we design is that it is based on the things we wear and the way we wear them. And the recession has definitely affected the way we make purchases. Rather than making a budget range - which would have to require us spending less on the garments and therefore letting the quality drop - we have put more attention into the detailing of the cut and versatility of the garments.

Caren: Our prices have always been very reasonable for designer clothing. As Gina says, the detailing of the cut and the versatility of the garments has become a real focus for us while still keeping our garments affordable to everyone.

Johannesburg Fashion Week. Tell us a bit about the collection that earned you that award.

The inspiration behind that collection was a celebration of the African woman.

Over the years we have done men and women’s collections, but in light of the first ever Arise African Fashion Week, I thought it would be great to celebrate the African Diva in all aspects.
