Holiday Memories Like No Other

CITY NEWS

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT STY L E E VE NTS, NE WS & G OSSIP FR OM A R OUND OR L A ND O By Riesa Pascal

Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad and Happy Holidays! Congratulations Orlando, you’ve made it through another year in the City Beautiful. In 2024 we shared festivals, fundraisers, galas, grand openings, marathons and so much more together. Now the countdown to 2025 is just days away and it’s time to start looking ahead to the future. As we jingle all the way into the new year, let’s take a moment to recap some of the most recent events that took place first. Here are all the highlights, just in case you missed it! What do you get when you combine history and a hands-on education? A fun day for all the family! Osceola History presented the 32nd Annual Pioneer Day festival on November 2nd as a celebration of Osceola County’s history and heritage. It was free entry and free parking for everyone as visitors discovered how the Florida Seminoles and early pioneers survived, learned how to milk a cow or make butter at the Kids Zone, and much more all while being entertained with live music. There were also plenty of unique arts and crafts for sale and local food vendors along with historical demonstrations of pioneer living, early American trades and Seminole life. ‘Tis the season to be jolly and I think it’s safe to say Orlando was full of joy—and beer—this November! What better way to kick off an entire month of fabulous events than with the 8th Annual Orlando Beer Festival? On November 2nd, thousands of beer lovers came together to experience unlimited tastings of hundreds of varieties of beer, ciders, seltzers, spirits and cocktails from dozens of local, regional and national breweries and companies. Located in Festival Park, attendees of

the festival also enjoyed tasty eats from the Food Truck Zone and live music to keep the party going all afternoon! The Orlando Beer Festival also featured a giant interactive game zone with carnival games, giant beer pong, college football games shown on the big screen, and many more surprises. VIP ticket-holders enjoyed a wide range of added benefits including early entry to beer tastings, 2024 commemorative souvenirs, exclusive tastings and much more. Outdoor fun and family activities drew thousands of Central Floridians to Lake Eola from November 2-3 for Fiesta in the Park! Now in its 53rd year of existence, Fiesta in the Park is the largest arts & crafts festival event series in Orlando. While live entertainment on the East Lawn was a highlight of the free festival, the real stars of the show were the hundreds of amazing artists and crafters that came from all over the United States to display and sell their original work. In addition to mouth-watering food options and a dedicated Kidszone, the pet-friendly fiesta was also the perfect opportunity to obtain one‑of‑a‑kind gifts for the holidays. On November 9th, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and his Veterans Advisory Council honored the courageous men and women of the armed forces at the 25th annual City of Orlando Veterans Day Parade in downtown Orlando. The Veterans Day Parade is one of Mayor Dyer's signature events and Central Florida’s largest Veterans Day Parade. This year's theme was "A Legacy of Loyalty and Service" featuring marching bands, ROTC units, active duty military, decorative floats and veterans groups from all military branches representing a wide variety of conflicts. Following last year’s unforgettable event, Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) returned to Tinker Field in Downtown Orlando with the best in electronic dance music,

full-size carnival rides, performers, and unforgettable art. From November 8-10, EDC featured scores of the world’s top dance-music artists alongside plenty of funfilled festivities on stages that represented a distinct union of technology and nature. From the stage decor and sound to the pyrotechnics and performers, many unique elements went into bringing the world of EDC to life. Festival attendees were invited to wander, explore, interact, and connect through all aspects of the event. Cows & Cabs was a culinary treat for foodie aficionados across the City Beautiful! On November 9th, the annual charity event brought together renowned chefs from top local restaurants in Orlando. The Western themed event featured live entertainment, a live auction and raffle, craft beer tasting and, of course, awesome food. Attendees grabbed their boots and cowboy hats for a wonderful evening celebrating the local community and helping others. Cows 'n Cabs featured mini-dish tastings from 35+ gourmet Orlando restaurants paired with over 200 wines, cocktails, and craft beers. The 12th Cows 'n Cabs benefitted charities supporting children in Central Florida including After-School All Stars Orlando, 4 Roots, and Winter Park Day Nursery. The Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic returned from November 15-16 with outdoor food stations lining the hotel causeway. Food booths offered delicious eats from award winning restaurants and lounges in the hotel, plus additional popups during the festival. As well as over 20 delicious eats, there were samples of 150 wines, beers and beverages from all over the globe. Guests enjoyed themed locations like the Bubble Lounge, Beer Garden, Chinatown, plus expert-led seminars, including pasta making, wine blending, craft cocktails and more. Now in its 38th year, The Festival of Trees transformed the Orlando Museum of

Art into a radiant, glowing wonderland filled with sparkling trees and stunning décor for visitors of all ages to kick off the Christmas season. From November 16-24, general admission ticket holders enjoyed enchanting décor, more than 30 designer-decorated trees, exceptional gingerbread houses and breath-takingly beautiful wreaths. Each piece was available for purchase with all proceeds benefiting the Orlando Museum of Art. Made possible by Council of 101 and designed to the theme “Let the Joy of the Season Shine,” visitors were also invited to participate in the crowd favorite Entertaining and Design tablescapes raffle, Silent Auction, photo ops with Santa and more. In addition, there was even a fun holiday shopping experience in their Toyland pop-up boutique as well as live entertainment throughout the familyfriendly event. Taking place Thanksgiving weekend and inviting attendees to discover the world around them, FusionFest is one of Downtown Orlando’s most unique cultural celebrations. The 501(c)3 nonprofit organization’s mission is to celebrate the people and the many different cultures that make Central Florida awesome by showcasing talents, sharing stories, driving innovation and building community based on respect and understanding. In addition to a cornucopia of dishes from around the world, the two-day event featured interactive experiences and contests celebrating fashion, music, dance, short films and more, all designed to honor each person’s heritage while exploring how we influence each other and create our own unique identity. FusionFest 2024 took place at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and was free to attend with food, beverages and merchandise all available for purchase as attendees celebrated diversity, inclusion and collaboration in Central Florida.

A Dreamy World Awaits at Wardrobe Boutique... By Josie NeJame This November, the Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort welcomed guests into a world of charm and romance as the beloved brand LoveShackFancy took over the Wardrobe boutique. Known for its vintage-inspired, feminine allure, LoveShackFancy brought a curated collection of clothing, home decor, perfume, and children’s apparel to Orlando. Each piece in this collection was infused with the brand’s signature whimsy and timeless elegance, inviting guests to immerse themselves in a world that feels like a fairytale come to life. Upon entering, guests were greeted by a beautifully adorned tablescape with pink floral linens, delicate gold candlesticks, and roses in soft hues—a scene straight out of a dream. A separate table set up for young girls to craft friendship bracelets added a playful touch, evoking the kind of joy and community often seen at Taylor Swift concerts. Secretly, I hoped my own teenager might make one that said, “I love my mom,” but she was too captivated by the Fall 2024 Holiday Collection, and she bolted with excitement towards the red bowed holiday dress. The entire boutique was meticulously styled to evoke a magical escape, where Midsummer Night’s Dream meets a “girls just wanna have fun” adventure. The boutique was decorated with enchanting Disney meets floral details like a lovely LSF Minnie Mouse painting, crafted by Disney Fine artist Dom Corona for the event, and a large freestanding mirror adorned with an oversized bow in LoveShackFancy’s classic floral print, perfect for selfies.

The Wardrobe boutique’s transformation officially launched on November 8th, with racks filled with delicate pastels, intricate floral prints, and playful details from LoveShackFancy’s Fall 2024 and Resort 2025 collections. Founder Rebecca Hessel Cohen made a special appearance, sharing her excitement about bringing the brand to “The Most Magical Place on Earth.” “As someone who lives to make dreams come true, there's nowhere else I'd rather be than at Walt Disney World with my family,” she remarked. This mother-daughter trip to Orlando marked a first for Rebecca and her daughters, Stella, and Scarlett. Together, they embraced the tourist spirit, creating fun Instagram reels around the park in their LSF dresses paired with Disney tees. A major highlight of the event was interacting with Rebecca herself. Her energy was infectious, as she connected effortlessly with guests, discussing the design of each piece, offering styling tips, and taking countless selfies with fans. Her signature fun pose, hand raised high in the air, became a hallmark of the event. For Rebecca, LoveShackFancy isn’t just a brand—it’s a world where women of all ages can express their femininity, joy, and unique spirit. Rebecca’s ability to connect with her customers is one of the reasons LoveShackFancy has such a loyal following. She doesn’t just sell dresses—she invites women into a whimsical world where fashion tells a story, creating memories and celebrating life’s beautiful moments. She can describe each ruffle, bow, and floral print with a joyful enthusiasm that makes you feel like part of the LoveShackFancy family.

dream, e

Remarkably, Rebecca’s journey began humbly in 2010 when she designed bridesmaid dresses for her own wedding, not knowing it would inspire a fashion empire. Cofounded with her husband Todd in 2013, LoveShackFancy now has a cult following that adores all things floral, feminine, and frilled.

The LoveShackFancy takeover at Wardrobe offered more than just popular designs—it also included exclusive pieces usually reserved for the brand’s own boutiques. Shoppers found signature styles like tweed jackets with bow details, classic plaids reimagined with lace and ruffles, and soft knits in pastel hues. The Resort 2025 collection introduced rich holiday colors—deep greens, festive reds, shimmering blacks, and sparkling sequins for a bold seasonal statement. A standout piece was the reimagined Rialto dress in shimmering black chiffon and crystal bows, combining ballet-inspired charm with a touch of The Nutcracker fantasy.

Wardrobe, the boutique nestled in the lobby of Four Seasons Orlando, is known for its curated selection of luxurious, on-trend pieces from designers like Missoni, Cartier, and Anya Hindmarch. With popular “Sip & Shop” events and carefully chosen selections, Wardrobe is a beloved shopping destination for guests, residents, and locals alike. Michelle Perales, Wardrobe’s manager of retail buying, shared her excitement: “Our guests, residents, and locals adore LoveShackFancy, and I can’t wait for them to experience the beauty and magic of this delightful, unique in-store pop-up. English Countryside Meets Southern Charm Where Timeless Southern Charm Meets Modern Luxury in the Heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains By Dana Damato There’s a warmth and comfort in a destination that feels like home every time you visit. From the familiar music you hear filling the space in a grandiose lobby, to the hospitality of the staff who feel like family, to the traditional Southern cuisine at each restaurant. Barnsley Resort, situated on 3,000 acres in Adairsville, GA, is just that – your own storybook destination that feels like home. Barnsley Resort is where nature, history, outdoor adventure and hospitality meet to create memorable experiences in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. As the summertime wanes and the fall season arrives, Barnsley Resort bursts into a vibrant palette of reds, oranges, and golds. The expansive grounds, once the estate of Godfrey Barnsley, who began construction on his Italianate villa in the 1840s, transforms into an awe-inspiring canvas as trees shed their summer attire. Guests can wander the manicured gardens and wooded trails, where every turn reveals breathtaking sceneries, and the crisp air is tinged with the earthy aroma of the fallen leaves. The sight of sunlight filtering through the colorful canopy creates a magical atmosphere that feels like you’re stepping into a beautiful fall painting. This is the Barnsley Resort that I know and the experience I have each time I visit. However, a myriad of renovations and upgrades have debuted and are underway at one of the South’s most acclaimed destinations. Barnsley Resort is familiar like an old friend who has grown up and found a much more sophisticated and luxurious wardrobe. Just as lovely as you remember her to be with all her charm and beauty but has debuted with an elevated persona. One of the most notable features that encompasses the Barnsley Resort experience is their 39 free-standing cottages available to guests which can transport you to a quaint English countryside village. While these cottages have always embodied a cozy

charm that makes you want to curl up in a blanket next to the soothing crackle of a stone fireplace, the newly renovated cottages have given the property a fresh appeal while maintaining its Southern charm and hospitality. The fresh but charming design is inspired by a heritage color palette and the classic flora and fauna that is both luxurious and nostalgic of the Southern region. Accessories such as artwork influenced by the resort’s offerings, rattan sconces, vintage-inspired lanterns and other mixed-metal finishes blend seamlessly to feel as if they have been collected over time. To establish a harmonious aesthetic across the Village Green, cottage facades also received a new color palette that embrace nature-inspired colors, including shades of Dried Thyme, Sage, Roycroft Bronze Green, Alabaster, Shell White, Toque White, and Charwood-stained patios and doors. A beautiful new look isn’t the only upgrade coming to Barnsley Resort. Complementing the newly renovated cottages, additional enhancements include a traditional German Biergarten expected for a late November completion. Located in the center of the resort village, Biergarten will have a two-sided stacked stone fireplace and a covered pavilion, providing guests with endless experiences, such as watching football and lawn games in an al fresco setting. spin unpredictably, challenging their speed and reflexes. These additions complement the resort's extensive sporting portfolio, which includes seasonal quail and pheasant wing shooting, the Swarovski 1,000-yard challenge, and exhilarating UTV rides, all now conveniently available at one location. If hunting and shooting aren’t in the cards for you, then put your chaps on for a guided horseback ride through the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains. For younger children who are still getting used to barnyard animals, the Animal Canvasing activity offers a fun fingerpainting experience with smaller barnyard friends.

L-shape bar will serve an evolving menu of regional, German and European brews, paired with an all-day menu of biergarten classics, including pretzels and bratwurst, plus barbecue favorites slow-smoked by the resident Pitmaster, wings, salads and sandwiches. One of the most unique experiences offered at Barnsley Resort is located at The Beretta Shooting Grounds by High Adventure Company, an1,800-acre hunting preserve located less than five miles from the resort with quail hunting available seasonally. When adventure calls, there’s plenty waiting for you upon your arrival. The shooting grounds have enhanced its offerings for sporting clays with the addition of a new five-stand station, perfect for group activities and beginners. Two new 15-station clay courses have also been designed and installed next to the clubhouse, which has been upgraded with a spacious new deck for outdoor events. Additionally, a new field for Helice has been introduced, broadening the range of shooting experiences available. In Helice, participants aim at uniquely designed targets, called "Helices," that are launched into the air and

At Barnsley Resort, luxury meals surpass mere dining to become an unforgettable experience, and one that will surely awaken your palette. Imagine savoring exquisitely crafted dishes that blend the region’s vibrant flavors with gourmet techniques, all set within Barnsley Resort’s finest restaurants. Thanks to its close ties with local farmers and producers, Barnsley Resort offers some of the finest "Garden-ToTable" cuisine in Georgia. With three on-site restaurants showcasing the freshest seasonal flavors, your biggest challenge will be choosing a dish and the ideal cocktail to pair with it. Dining at Woodlands Grill features a refreshed English hunting lodge ambiance and scenic views of the golf course, making it a perfect spot to savor comforting Southern dishes. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, it serves delicious Southern fare at any hour, along with an extensive selection of wine, craft beer, and spirits. At the other end of the main road lies Rice House, a charming 19th-century farmhouse that offers a taste of history. Originally the home of the Rice Family from Rome, Georgia, this building has been carefully relocated to Barnsley Resort. As a cornerstone of the resort's 'Garden-toTable' initiative, Rice House features a menu that changes every few weeks, highlighting ingredients grown in the on-site garden and other seasonal local produce sourced from within a 150-mile radius.

The stunning ruins of the original manor, built by Godfrey Barnsley for his wife, Julia, are a must-see, standing majestically above the resort’s renowned gardens. With authentic, locally sourced cuisine, an extensive selection of wine and bourbon, a boutique spa, an 18hole Jim Fazio-designed course, recognized as some of the fastest greens in the Southeast, and 140 guest rooms spread across the Inn and enchanting cottages, Barnsley Resort offers a blissful retreat perfect for a complete mind and body rejuvenation. Once again, my experience at Barnsley Resort was nothing short of extraordinary. From the stunning natural landscapes to the exceptional amenities, every moment was memorable and awe-inspiring. Whether exploring the serene gardens, indulging in gourmet dining, or enjoying exhilarating outdoor activities, the resort seamlessly combines relaxation and adventure. The warm hospitality and attention to detail made me feel truly welcomed, creating memories that I will treasure long after my visit. Barnsley Resort is a perfect escape, offering an unforgettable experience that leaves you not wanting to leave and eager to return. HEALTH

why you must Love Yourself First Embracing Self-Love: The Foundation for Confidence, Resilience, and Healthy Relationships By Natalie Smith

30 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

HEALTH

“When you learn to value and love yourself, you open up a world of opportunities and set a standard for how others should treat you.” Loving yourself first is one of the most important steps toward building a happy, fulfilling life. Selflove is often misunderstood as selfishness, but in reality, it’s the foundation upon which healthy relationships, resilience, and personal growth are built. When you learn to value and love yourself, you open up a world of opportunities and set a standard for how others should treat you. Here’s why self-love is essential and how it influences every aspect of life. Self-Love Cultivates Confidence When you love yourself, you develop a sense of confidence that isn’t dependent on others’ opinions. You start to see your worth through your own eyes rather than through external validation. This confidence helps you pursue dreams, take risks, and move forward without needing constant approval. When you rely on yourself for affirmation, you become more resilient in the face of failure because you understand that setbacks don’t define you. Healthy Relationships Start with Self-Love When you love yourself, you’re able to form healthier, more balanced relationships. Self-love teaches you to set boundaries and communicate your needs openly. In contrast, when people don’t practice self-love, they may seek validation or acceptance from others, which can lead to codependency or unhealthy attachments. By loving yourself, you attract people who respect you, value your boundaries, and understand the importance of mutual growth. Self-Love Builds Emotional Resilience Life can be challenging, and self-love helps build the resilience needed to navigate tough times.

When you value yourself, you become less likely to engage in self-criticism or spiral into negative thinking during hardships. Instead, you show compassion to yourself, forgiving your mistakes and learning from them. This self-compassion fosters a mindset that helps you bounce back from life’s setbacks more quickly, viewing them as learning experiences rather than failures. Personal Growth and Self-Love are Interconnected Loving yourself means being patient with yourself, allowing you to pursue personal growth without judgment or fear of failure. Self-love enables you to see your potential and work toward it because you know you’re worth the effort. When you care for yourself, you prioritize your mental, physical, and emotional well-being, which fuels your growth journey. Setting a Standard for Others When you demonstrate self-love, you establish a standard for how others should treat you. People will recognize your self-respect and are more likely to reciprocate it. Conversely, when you lack self-love, you might unintentionally allow others to undervalue you. By valuing yourself, you attract people who treat you with the respect you deserve. In essence, self-love isn’t just about feeling good; it’s about building a stable foundation for a healthy, fulfilling life. By learning to love yourself, you set the stage for confidence, resilience, and genuine relationships. The journey to self-love may take time, but it’s worth every step.

RECAP

EDC 2024

RECAP

By Maha Chaudhry

RECAP

If you are one of many fans of EDM,

then you probably look forward to the month of November every year! EDC (Electric Daisy Carnival) is a three-day music festival to remember. And every year in November, tens of thousands of fans flock to Tinker Field near Camping World Stadium for the immersive experience. The festival features worldclass EDM artists and headliners, elaborate stage designs that never fail to amaze you, immersive art installations, and interactive activities for everyone to enjoy. There is something to be said about the energy that fills the air and brings about its own kind of high. And if you’ve ever attended EDC, then you know exactly what I am talking about. This makes sense considering the EDC community embraces the PLUR culture, which stands for Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect. With that said, the days and nights are full of positive vibes, inclusivity, selfexpression and bright creative outfits to add to the already whimsical atmosphere. Every year you have the option to explore four of the larger stages: KineticField, CircuitGROUNDS, neonGARDEN, and stereoBLOOM, which feature a variety of sets from DJs around the world. Having options is amazing, especially when all of them are good, however, your only problem being, what if you want to see multiple DJs performing at the same time? I definitely felt that this year as I was so pleased with the lineup that ranged from the OG of EDM, to modern-day house. Here are some of my headliner top picks from this year, which I must say was hard to do because everyone was memorable. HEADLINER PICKS

FISHER: Friday night ended with a bang because FISHER headlined as one of the closing sets for day one. Paul Fisher is an Australian DJ and producer known for his infectionscrowd-pleasing tech-house tracks and larger-than-life personality, and it was indicative on the kinetic stage. Even though his home lies in music scenes including EDC, Tomorrowland, and Ibiza, his outrageous persona is getting him more noticed in mainstream. FISHER is definitely in the limelight and we love to see it.

Dimitri Vegas and Steve Aoki: This collaboration made day two truly unforgettable. The set was on fire, literally! (thank you, amazing stage designers and engineers). Dimitri Vegas is part of the Belgian DJ duo Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike. The two together are high-energy, and theatrical live performances. And when you combine that with Steve Aoki, what you get is nothing short of show stopping. Steve Aoki, known for his high-octane performances and cake-throwing antics, knows how to captivate his audience. This makes him one of the most recognizable figures in EDM. His music covers electro-house, in which he often collaborates with mainstream artists across genres. This set had you dancing harder, singing harder, and just enjoying every minute. Gareth Emery: Known as an original when it comes to electronic dance music, Emery knows how to put on an unforgettable set. He’s recognized for his melodic trance and progressive house sound. And when Emery is on stage, you just know because of the awe-inspiring laserfocused shows, which combine advanced laser visuals with his music. And on EDC day three in stereoBLOOM fashion, he took us on a mesmerizing journey of modern combined with nostalgic dance beats. John Summit: And last but not least, you have Summit closing out the last and final day three of EDC. And what an ending to a weekend it was. No stranger to EDC Orlando, Summit has been consistently showing up with undeniable talent and high-energy tracks. I am a firm believer that most people who stayed or joined for Sunday, did so because Summit would be in attendance. He might be a newer face in the mainstream EDC scene, but he is blowing it up with tracks that topped the charts and playlists worldwide. There was not a single person who didn’t look like they were living their best life while Summit was on set of CircuitGROUNDS. Thank you for brining EDC to a memorable end, as always.

With a sprinkle of toasted coconut flakes and a fresh mint garnish, it’s both beautiful and delicious, evoking a taste of the islands right in your own home. Ingredients: 2 oz of coconut cream 1 oz of rum (optional for a spirited version) 1 oz of simple syrup Club soda or sparkling water Ice cubes Toasted coconut flakes for garnish Fresh mint sprig for garnish Instructions: Begin by chilling your glass in the freezer for a frosty effect that keeps the drink refreshingly cool from the first sip to the last. Once the glass is chilled, fill it with ice cubes. Pour in the coconut cream, rum (if you’re choosing to add it), and simple syrup. Stir gently to mix the flavors without diluting the drink too much. Top off the mixture with club soda or sparkling water to add a touch of effervescence, bringing a light and refreshing fizz that balances the creaminess of the coconut.

A Refined Fusion of Seasonal Elegance and Crisp, Artisanal Flavor.

To garnish, coat the rim of the glass with toasted coconut flakes, creating a visually striking edge that adds an extra layer of flavor with every sip. Finish it off with a fresh mint sprig, which adds a pop of color and a hint of freshness that complements the coconut beautifully. Serve immediately and enjoy your Toasted Coconut Winter Fizz! This cocktail offers a luxurious blend of creamy and crisp flavors, with the toasted coconut adding a festive flair, perfect for any December or January gathering. Each sip is a delightful reminder of warmer places and holiday cheer. Cheers to the season!

O-Ku

This rare and exceptional restaurant opened its doors on Oct. 2024. It is nestled in the heart of Alys Beach’s Town Center overlooking the lawn of the Amphitheater on scenic 30-A.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be opening O-Ku in Alys Beach,” says Steve Palmer, Founder of The Indigo Road Hospitality Group. “Alys is such a special place and is a location that we have been scouting for more than five years. Alongside our O-Ku operating partner Kimball Brienza and culinary director Masa Hamaya, we can’t wait to welcome guests and be a part of the vibrant 30A restaurant community.” Sven and I couldn’t have agreed more. Japanese cuisine is one of our favorites, and, we really needed an upscale Japanese restaurant in this area! Alys Beach is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Expanding on Bermuda’s architectural language with the occasional Grecian trellis, Moorish arch, and Dutch gable bring awe-inspiring flourishes to Alys Beach’s architectural white canvas. It’s truly magnificent. All up & down scenic 30-A from Rosemary Beach, to Seaside, to Watercolor, where every home has a name — it’s beautiful up here.

We’ve been coming here since our first presstrip in 2010 when Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) offered nonstop flights from ECP to MCO. 50-minutes later, we were in paradise. Wow! Time does fly! O-Ku is designed by David Thompson, Studio. It is beautiful, bright and airy. I would describe it as Japandi style which is all the craze right now. Combining the best of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian simplicity, Japandi offers a harmonious blend of elegance, functionality, and natural warmth. Born & raised in Japan, Chef Masatomo “Masa” Hamaya, leads the culinary program with the local Alys Beach team with emphasis on tradition, showcasing an authentic approach to Japanese cuisine with the freshest, seasonal ingredients possible. O-Ku Alys Beach is the second location to open in the Sunshine State, following the opening of the successful Jacksonville Beach location in 2022. And, exciting news for Tampa residents — there’s an O-Ku opening in 2025! I must say the freshness of the food and the awe-inspiring presentation is second to none. There wasn’t a dish that I didn’t like. It’s that good. My absolute favorites: Chef Specialty: A5 WAGYU “SANDO” Japanese a5 ribeye, Kaluga

• Design: The Miami-based planning and architecture firm DPZ CoDesign was brought in to create the vision for Alys Beach. The town was designed to further develop the principles of New Urbanism and was styled after the architecture of Bermuda and Antigua. • Groundbreaking: The first 16 houses were built in 2004. Fast forward to 2024 — the average cost of homes in Alys Beach, FL were selling for a median price of $3,949,500 in October 2024. Median $/Sqft $1,342.

Fun Fact The 1998 comedy-drama film, The Truman Show, was filmed in Seaside, FL also on 30-A just 7.6 miles west of Alys Beach. Founded in 1981 by Robert Davis, Andrés Duany, and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk. The idea for Seaside began in 1946 when Davis’ grandfather purchased land for a family summer retreat. The town was the main filming location for The Truman Show and it put this area on the map!

HOLIDAY FASHION TRENDS

"FASHION IS ALWAYS A MEANS OF SELF-EXPRESSION—KEEP IT COZY, STYLISH, AND UNIQUELY YOU THIS HOLIDAY SEASON." The contrast between Florida’s warmth and the cold of winter is striking, isn’t it? But don’t let that stop you from having fun with fashion during this Holiday Season. You’re not limited to bulky coats or wool scarves here. Adopt the styles of the season that are appropriate for Florida’s distinct “winter.” Given that most of Florida experiences a tropical climate year-round, it can be challenging to dress for cold weather in the Sunshine State. Mornings usually bring an icy hint of winter, but afternoons will return to summer humidity until yet another perfectly cold evening arrives. Because of this, when dressing for winter in Florida, it’s important to strike the correct balance between warmth, practicality, and style.

Light Layering

Gaining proficiency in light layering is essential for your wardrobe, let’s discuss how to maintain comfort without compromising flair. First, cardigans with a beach theme are your best friend. They give a subtle layer of warmth and a dash of maritime charm, making them ideal for those windy coastal evenings. You can wear one over a dress for a laid-back supper or wrap one over yourself while walking along the beach. The next must-have item is lightweight denim. It goes nicely with practically anything and is quite adaptable. Your ensemble can benefit from the cool, relaxed sophistication that a thin denim jacket brings. Also, remember to wear sheer sweaters—they are light and airy, making them ideal for situations where a little warmth is needed. They’re a fantastic addition to your winter wardrobe when paired with a gorgeous tank. Thin leather jackets can also give your outfit a bit of edge and sophistication. Despite being lightweight, they are plenty warm for Florida’s winters. Finally, your best weapon—and my personal favorite—is a multipurpose scarf. For a splash of color, tie them to your bag, wrap them around your neck, or use them as a shawl. They’re stylish, versatile, and the ideal weight for layering.

Tropical Toned Winter Outfits

Tropical-inspired ensembles should be your go-to fashion statement if you want to stand out this holiday season. Florida’s sunny mood should be reflected in your winter clothing, which should be a colorful celebration of designs and hues. Women’s long sleeve dresses composed of breathable and light materials are a good choice for tropical winter attire. These dresses provide comfort in the mild Florida winters while adding a little extra warmth for chilly evenings. Even during the cooler months, floral designs and vivid hues can preserve that tropical atmosphere. Crinkle-cut jackets can be a great option for a fashionable layering look. These textured, light jackets provide some warmth without becoming bulky. They provide a stylish touch to your winter wardrobe and are simple to wear over a long-sleeved dress while going for an evening stroll or out dining. To maintain that tropical

atmosphere, choose pastel colors or eyecatching designs.

including bodysuits, t-shirts, and formal blouses.

Breathable Yet Festive Fabrics

Blazer with Structure

Let’s start by talking about holiday seasonal linens. These are ideal for creating a festive appearance without compromising comfort. Even under the winter sun, their lightweight and breezy nature will keep you feeling cool and refreshed. Breathable wool comes next. There are lightweight wool blends that are surprisingly breathable, despite the common belief that wool is too warm. They will make you feel like it’s winter without making you feel hot. Another excellent choice is winter silks. They may elevate any outfit and are both opulent and lightweight. Just keep in mind that they may need a little more attention than other fabrics. And lastly, seasonal rayon. Because of its reputation for imitating other textiles, this cloth is ideal for creating a winter ensemble that is nevertheless appropriate for Florida’s warm environment. So, when you’re organizing your Christmas attire, keep these possibilities in mind.

The Slip Dress

Because you can simply dress it up or down and change the accessories depending on the weather, a basic slip dress is a wardrobe essential during any warm holiday season. The slip dress has made a significant resurgence, having previously been confined to undergarments and 90s-inspired ensembles. It’s adaptable, stylish, and chic.

Wearing a structured jacket over a simple band shirt or camisole can instantly elevate your entire outfit. The blazer is a stylish substitute for a bulkier cold-weather jacket that is ideal for Florida winters. It can be worn with jeans, leggings, skirts, and it can be worn from the office out to happy hour. I really adore an enormous leather blazer, which instantly turns any ensemble from day to night! There you have it; these top trends will help you rock Florida’s winter during the holiday season. Remember 70% of people report feeling way more confident when they are happy with their outfits. Therefore, you’re likely to draw attention whether you’re using light layers, tropical hues, breezy materials, or florals. This winter, keep it fashionable, cozy, and distinctively you. Fashion is always a means of self-expression! - Omayra La Bella™ - www.omayralabella.net - IG: @omayralabella

The best thing about the slip dress is that you may choose a bright design to create a statement or a simple neutral color to match different shirts and blazers.

Satin Midi Skirt

This year, especially in the hot Florida weather, the satin midi/mini/maxi skirt is the perfect piece to wear as you transition from fall to winter. My favorite skirt this year is the midi skirt, whether it’s patterned, monochrome, side slit, or no slit! I adore this skirt style because it falls naturally over the body, creating a silhouette that flatters people of all shapes and sizes. Additionally, it’s a fantastic neutral bottom that goes well with a variety of tops,

CELEBRITY SOUP

A YEAR IN REVIEW A LOOK BACK AT THE BIGGEST CELEBRITY NEWS STORIES OF 2024 By Riesa Pascal

64 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

CELEBRITY SOUP

As with every year, 2024 has been one for the books in the world of celebrity news. With this past year being full of shocking celebrity scandals, tragic deaths, unexpected breakups and more, it only makes sense for us to do a little reflection on the year we’re leaving behind and the various stars who took over the headlines in 2024. CELEBRITY DEATHS As the sun sets on another year, the world is once again paying their respects to the numerous entertainers, celebrities, and other public figures who we lost in 2024. From known illnesses to stars entering their Twilight years, not all celebrity deaths come as a total surprise, but one star we lost this year was the youngest on our list by over 20 years. Former One Direction member Liam Payne tragically died after falling from a building in Buenos Aires on October 16th. While his death is still under investigation, several people have been charged in connection to the horror incident which left fans around the globe devastated and reeling. Payne was just 31 years old when he passed and now leaves behind a seven-year-old son, Bear, whom he shares with his ex-partner Chery Cole. Below are just a few additional stars we said a sad goodbye to in 2024: Chita Rivera - January 30, 2024 (age 91 years) Carl Weathers - February 2, 2024 (age 76 years) Toby Keith - February 5, 2024 (age 62 years) Shelley Duvall - July 11, 2024 (age 75 years) Shannen Doherty - July 13, 2024 (age 53 years) Richard Simmons - July 13, 2024 (age 76 years) Dame Maggie Smith - September 27, 2024 (age 89 years) Quincy Jones - November 3, 2024 (age 91 years) CELEBRITY BREAKUPS While love and romance were in the air for many celebrities this year, we also saw plenty of Hollywood duos calling it quits on short and even long-term relationships. Take Linda Mathis for example who shocked the world on August 22nd when she filed for divorce from her husband of 39 years, award-winning TV-court personality Judge Greg Mathis. However, in a surprising twist-

of-fate, news recently broke that Mathis and his wife have amazingly reconciled and are back together! Unfortunately, not all celebrity breakups had such a happy ending this year and perhaps none shocked us (or for some of us… didn’t shock us) more than Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck. After just two years of marriage, Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck on the anniversary of their wedding in Georgia. Clarification… the anniversary of their SECOND wedding in Georgia. That’s right, these lovebirds were so head-over-heels for each other that they held not one, but two star-studded weddings to celebrate their nuptials and “life-long” commitment to one another. The news came after months of speculation that the couple affectionately dubbed “Bennifer” were secretly leading separate lives. Incredibly, this marriage was actually their second shot at love after originally being engaged back in 2002 before calling it off. Here are additional celebrity couples who called it quits this year: Channing Tatum and Zoe Kravitz Cardi B and Offset Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher Billy Ray Cyrus and Firerose Chad “Ocho Cinco” Johnson and Sharelle Rosado Andrew Garfield and Dr. Kate Tomas Halle Bailey and DDG Joey Lawrence and Samantha Cope Harry Styles and Taylor Russell Chance the Rapper and Kirsten Corley Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied AJ McLean and Rochelle McLean CELEBRITY CONTROVERSIES Okay, let’s be real… Some years, there’s one celebrity story that just absolutely dominates the headlines no matter what other shocking news took place. Last year, I think we can all agree that it was Taylor Swift’s budding romance with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Even now, the press around the couple hasn’t entirely died down, but one bigger celebrity story—and controversy—has definitely taken the reins of 2024. Unless you’ve been hiding out under a rock this year, everyone

reading this should know that I’m talking about the astonishing downfall of Sean “P. Diddy” Combs’ and the devastating blow suffered to his billion-dollar empire. Fresh on the heels of a settled lawsuit with his ex-partner Cassie who accused Combs of being physically and sexually abusive throughout their relationship, more than 20 other people stepped forward to sue Combs, accusing him of abusive behavior ranging from sexual harassment and rape to nonconsensual pornography and sex trafficking. Federal agents raided Combs’s properties in March which eventually led to Combs’ shock arrest in September. Combs was charged with racketeering and sex trafficking, to which he pleaded not guilty. If convicted on his racketeering charges, Combs could be facing up to life in prison and an additional 15 years for his sex trafficking charges. Combs is currently being held without bail until trial, which is set to start on May 5, 2025. Although much more mild in comparison, here are some other celebrities who were a part of their own controversial headlines this year: Jennifer Lopez’s documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told sparks controversy and backlash after clips featuring Lopez talking about her upbringing in the Bronx went viral. Blake Lively’s past controversies resurface following recent public backlash over her media tour for It Ends With Us Katy Perry’s comeback attempt falls flat as her new album is plagued by controversy and failed singles Kate Middleton issues an apology after admitting she edited a Mother’s Day portrait that was pulled from multiple news agencies over manipulation accusations.

RICHARD BRINKER Restorative Dentist and Surgeon

As an original Disney cast member, I hope to see a return to the family-centered creativity that the brand was once known for. A proud graduate of the University of Florida and former resident advisor in Murphree Hall, my Gator pride is unwavering, especially on Saturdays in The Swamp!

After a fulfilling career as a dentist in the U.S. Navy, with deployments as far as Antarctica, and over 40 years in private practice across Denver, Pennsylvania, and Upstate New York, I now enjoy an active retirement. Volunteering downtown allows me to stay connected to my profession and my community. I’m inspired by the new generation of Central Floridians who have access to world-class entertainment at Steinmetz Hall, the charm of Lake Eola, and theme parks that draw visitors from around the globe. For me, though, it’s the abundance of unspoiled nature that truly makes this place home. brinkerrlar@aol.com

It’s a joy to be back in The City Beautiful, reconnecting with the Central Florida that shaped my life. Growing up here before Disney transformed the landscape, I remember Lake Howell as a quiet, natural retreat with Lake Drive as a simple dirt road. Central Florida’s beauty—Paynes Prairie, the crystal waters of the Ichetucknee Springs, the surf of New Smyrna Beach, and the timeless charm of Old Key West—is still one of my greatest inspirations.
