PUBLISHER’S NOTE

new and amazing developments in the medicine and beauty industries, and our special “Body & Soul” issue of Tampa Style will remind you to take a break, relax, and enjoy the lovely things of each day. Forget your worries for an hour or two and stop and smell the roses! Life is short, and those who take the time to allow their mind to linger on the sunny side seem to make this life better and perhaps, longer. It is so important for us to take care of our health, so we can increase our time on earth with those we love. This month, remember to take the opportunity to see your doctor, hit the gym, visit the spa, splurge on an afternoon at the salon or socialize with friends and family at your favorite restaurant and really enjoy and “taste” life. Our April issue of Tampa Style features our popular profiles on some of the most extraordinary and successful business personalities in the area, along with the always fantastic fashion trends and fascinating photo shoots that inspire you, our stylish readers, every month. It is always so rewarding to see the fruits of our labor in our finish product, thanks to the hard work and dedication of our writers, photographers, and graphic mavens, and we hope you enjoy this issue as much as we did putting it together!

DEAR READERS, As the month of April begins, I find myself thinking of that old saying that we’ve heard time and time again. There are some things you just can’t avoid: taxes and getting older. Well, hopefully our taxes will be taken care of by April 15th, but getting older? Now that’s another story.

For our calendar-conscious crowd, April 1 begins our annual “Got Style” campaign to build our subscriber base. All new and renewal clientele are eligible to win our $500 prize* offered at: www.TampaStyleMagazine.com/Subscribe On a fun note, our publication is the first national magazine to create the new and highly technological printing process called “Lirpa Loof,” which injects flavors into the paper. We invite each of you to taste a blank square on a page and attempt to guess the flavor. (Warning: It may contain peanuts!) Did you discover some of the flavors? Send us your feedback at info@styletome.com. Until next month, have some springtime fun in the sun!

No matter how hard we try, we just can’t seem to avoid the effects that time has on us. Although, after watching the movie “Lucy,” I got a bit more hope, as the storyline insinuates that cells don’t really die. Perhaps, it just lives on our offspring and/or is it something else, like energy that floats through the universe…Well, whether that’s true or false, the idea is definitely worth pondering We might not ever understand all of the mysteries of life, but it’s comforting to know that as long as we’re here on earth, we will always continue to develop new and beneficial ways to keep ourselves youthful and in good health. This month, take a moment to ponder all of the wonderful aspects of life, and perhaps you’ll even feel more youthful in the process. It is definitely great to know that there are

CITY NEWS

Motown the Musical

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT Style Events, News & Gossip From Around the City By Katerina Maurtua Every Saturday and Sunday in the month of March was devoted to Busch Garden’s Food and Wine festival. The park was filled with beautiful and rustic arrangements, festival games, wildlife exhibitions and live performances by Gavin Degraw, Fifth Harmony, Kool & The Gang & many more. If there’s one thing missed for those of you who didn’t get the chance to attend (and those who did would agree), it

The month of March welcomed spring to the Tampa Bay area with a hint of bikini ready weather and a handful of performances, musicals, and festivals to get us all in the mood for beachwear and getaways, spring salads, and sun-filled fests.

the whole family or a group of friends, especially for those music enthusiasts. A few of us at Tampa Style enjoyed a night listening to the performance of the legendary, John Legend. The fest has ranked in the top 40 and this year’s incredible food, contests, livestock and retailing has proved that to be true! Make sure to stop by next year if you get the chance. GASPARILLA MUSIC FEST What could be a better way to welcome the spring with fun, sun and music? Gasparilla, for the 5th year in a row, set up their musical festival in downtown tampa on March 7 and 8. The twoday special event brought us musical performances from Modest Mouse, Trampled by Turtles, Dynasty and even a lineup adequate for the little ones to enjoy. Not only was the lineup even more amazing than last year, but the culinary experience was just as remarkable. On March 8 Santana performed sensationally at the Mahaffey Theater. Since the 1960’s Santana has hypnotized us and brought us back to reality with his lyrics and guitar solos. His performance brought us and the rest of the theater into a reminiscent of past musical decades and a nostalgic state of mind from his earlier work.

was the assortment of food, beer, and oh so much wine. The plates varied from Venison Chili to Scallop Ceviche and was stocked with over 50 different beers and wine. For all you beer, wine and food lovers, the festival will be ongoing until April so there is still a chance to experience the fun. The Florida Strawberry Festival was a definite hit for the Tampa Bay area the first week of March, bringing us from fine arts to agriculture and performances from critically acclaimed entertainment. The festival was a perfect outing for

MOTOWN THE MUSICAL The Straz Center brought Tampa Bay’s broadway fanatics, Motown the musical. The record-breaking musical tells the true story of Motown’s founder Berry Gordy who was responsible for launching the careers of Smokey Robinson, the late Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross & many others. The story was wholeheartedly touching, the production was spectacular and the performance given by the cast was both beautiful and unforgettable. On March 20, The Florida Orchestra left a magnificent impression on everyone in the audience, including us! The music director, Michael Francis, wonderfully and intimately conducted the works from R. Strauss, Barber and ended the evening with Mahler, which featured a lovely soprano finale. Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? Do Tell!

(16.8%) acids. It is this unusual composition that offer these health and beauty benefits. Some may argue that saturated fats are harmful to one’s health, but let’s take a closer look: coconut oil contains so-called medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) – which are fatty acids of a medium length. These said triglycerides go straight to the liver from the digestive tract, where they are used as a quick source energy or turned into so-called ketone bodies. These ketone bodies can have therapeutic effects on brain disorders like epilepsy and Alzheimer’s. The key composition of lauric acid in coconut oil kills bacteria, acid, and other fungi. The scientific study is being practiced around the country for dental patients to better their oral health. This is known as Oil Pulling. The patients use coconut oil as mouth wash which is proven to whiten teeth, freshen breath, kill bacteria in the mouth and promote overall better oral health.

“Coconut oil can be used to better hair, skin, and even act as a sunscreen.”

I’M IN LOVE WITH

THE COCO The Wonders of Coconut Oil By Christina Nicholson

There always seems to be a new trend going around in health, fitness, and dieting. We’ve all experienced the fat-free, gluten free, and juicing phases. But one new discovery may stick around: the miracles of coconut oil! The coconut oil trend stands out among the others due to the dozens of multi use benefits. What can this miraculous coconut oil actually do? It is known to aid in fat loss and better brain function, improve oral health, and act as an all in one beauty enhancer just to name a few.

If that isn’t believable enough, consider the populations that consume coconut for most of their caloric intake, such as the Tokelauans in the South Pacific. The Tokelauans are known to have outstanding health and no documented evidence of heart disease! Coconut is considered one of the world’s “superfoods.” A superfood is defined as a nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being, which the Tokelauans already discovered. Coconut oil can also be used topically as an overall cosmetic and beauty product in addition to all of the internal health benefits. Coconut oil is used to improve hair and skin, and even acts as a sunscreen. Shine and restoration can be added to the hair with a pea size drop of coconut oil applied to freshly washed wet hair. We have all witnessed the health, fitness and beauty fads that come and go. With the research and science to back up the multi purposes of coconut oil, it’s no wonder why the popularity of coconut oil is continuing to grow!

Coconut oil is the most known to man saturated fat consisting of 90% fatty acids. Like all fats, coconut oil is a blend of fatty acids. Coconut oil contains an unusual blend of short and medium chain fatty acids, primarily lauric (44%) and myristic

DRINK YOUR WAY TO

A HEALTHIER

YOU

The Benefits of Tea By Christina Nicholson

Aside from water, tea has been the world’s most consumed beverage for the past 5,000 years. Nearly 6 billion pounds of tea are harvested each year. Whether you prefer having your cold tea during the summer months, or the hot tea to warm you up during those winter months, the benefits are all still bountiful with either choice.

Out of thousands of different types of tea, they can all be broken down into these four groups. The four major tea groups: white tea, green tea, oolong tea, and black tea. No matter what type of tea you choose, there are the benefits that other beverages just cannot compare. Here are some specific benefits: Tea contains antioxidants which protects your body from aging and the harmful effects of pollution. Tea also contains less caffeine than a cup of coffee. An 8 oz cup of coffee can have 135 mg of caffeine while tea contains 30 to 40 mg per cup, and avoids giving you the jitters, headaches, and does not interfere with sleep. Not to mention the 0 calories! One soft drink of soda or coffee can have up to 250 calories per serving. Once switching from coffee to tea you will notice you feel no crash as an aftereffect. Tea also protests against heart attack and stroke. Drinking tea keeps your arteries smooth and clog-free. In addition to protecting against

disease, it also strengthens your bones. Another major benefit, tea can actually speed up your metabolism! It can speed up your metabolic rate and have the ability to make you lose weight and burn calories faster.

“A 5.6-year study from the Netherlands found a 70 percent lower risk of fatal heart attack in people who drank at least two to three cups of black tea daily compared to non-tea drinkers.” - Now that’s “tea” for thought! Which tea is right for you? Let’s take a closer look at the four main types of tea: Oolong tea activates enzymes, meaning it breaks down fat (triglycerides) stored in the 30 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

blood. In addition to being a fat burner this type of tea also contains niacin which acts as a detox and can prevent tooth decay. Black tea is the most highly caffeinated tea. This type of teac consists of thearubigins and theaflavins, two antioxidants that are linked to lowering cholesterol levels! Green tea is the most popular tea. This tea contains catechins, yet another antioxidant. This compound has been researched to prevent cancer and heart disease. White tea is similar to green tea, it contains catechins the same antioxidant to help fight cancer and cardiovascular disease. No matter which cup of tea you prefer, we can all agree that tea is a healthier alternative than the popular soft drinks, sugar filled juices, and coffee filled with cream.

UPSIDE

DOWN The Upsides & Downsides of Inversion Therapy By Lauren Holiday

Ready to see the world a little differently? Try the view from upside-down on an inversion table. Many people are buckling in their feet and taking the plunge to not only get a new perspective on life (literally), but to also reduce lower back pain, stimulate circulation and lymphatic fluids, ease stress, improve joint health and increase flexibility. Used as part of a holistic approach to natural healing, inversion therapy could be your next wellness trend obsession. You’ve probably heard about the benefits of inverted poses in your last yoga class, but maybe it turned out doing handstands isn’t as easy as your instructor previously claimed. Enter the inversion table. A gentler way to angle your heart above your head, inversion tables are an easy-to-use tool for stress-relieving decompression therapy. Ever wonder why you feel shorter at night than in the morning? Because you actually are! Throughout the day gravity and weight bearing activities compress your spinal discs, causing them to release moisture and decrease flexibility. This causes the average person to lose half-an-inch to three-fourths-of-an-inch of height over the course of a day. Not only does this shorten your body, it also pinches the spinal nerves causing lower back pain. Inversion therapy slowly releases the pressure on your spinal discs (called applying traction), allowing them to rehydrate to full size, thus reversing the effects of gravity on your height. This also opens up the exit passageway for the nerves to the spinal column, releasing those pesky pinched nerves. With hydrated discs comes nourished cartilage, enhancing the natural shock absorption in your joints. Additionally, going upside-down stretches your back, increasing flexibility and ligament strength. Adding movement to the gentle inversions can also stimulate the lymphatic system, known for its defense function in the immune system. Lymphatic fluids filter waste products from the blood but

“WITH HYDRATED DISCS COMES NOURISHED CARTILAGE, ENHANCING THE NATURAL SHOCK ABSORPTION IN YOUR JOINTS. have no built-in pump for doing so. Adding oscillations to your inversion therapy routine creates a pumping action around the spinal discs forcing waste out and drawing new fluid in. What this means for your body is better recovery from training and other stressful actions your body endures. Knowing the benefits of inversion therapy is just the first step. Now you must begin a routine by strapping into an inversion table and angling yourself horizontal for one minute, or until your blood flow is able to adapt to the change. Push back no lower

than 45 degrees for the first week, breathing deeply for one to two minutes. You can also raise your hands above your head to create deeper spinal traction. Raise back up to a 25 degree angle until you can rest there for five minutes. Doing this twice a day will help your body quickly grow accustomed to the new perspective. After the first week, increase your angle by 10 to 20 degrees per week until you are comfortable with an angle between 60 and 90 degrees for one to five minutes. Always remember to use gentle movement when lowering down or pulling up.

Easing into seeing the world upside down will help you to avoid the downsides and just experience the upsides of inversion therapy. Like most things in life, inversion therapy is not universally beneficial to everyone. Because your heartbeat slows and blood pressure increases while inverted, it is not recommended for people with heart disease, high blood pressure, glaucoma, or acid reflux. You should always consult a doctor before beginning an inversion therapy routine.

questionnaires measured variables from four different psychological theories: the fear-avoidance model, the common sense model, expectancy theory, and social-cognitive theory.

“The majority of physical diseases are caused by internal emotional factors”

The results suggest that positive patients are more likely to feel in control of their symptoms and therefore tend to experience less back-related disability during their acupuncture treatment. From the study, two thirds of the variance in disability was due to the measured psychological variables. So, how can you be a “Positive Patient?” Try these steps below: 1. Believe in the benefits of your program. Try to leave skepticism at the door and approach your treatment as a positive opportunity that will follow through with the expected benefits. With minimal risks involved, acupuncture therapy can only help your situation.

2. Trust your acupuncture therapist. As a trained professional, your therapist understands your problems and knows the best treatment for optimum results. Establishing a relationship with your therapist over the course of your program increases the positive vibes associated with going to get treatment. 3. Understand your pain. Knowing your body and its pain responses is important to feeling in control of pain management. Try to be less emotional about your pain; cope with your disability and actively find solutions to your underlying problems. This will put rational control into your own hands and allow you to shape your treatment to meet your needs. 4. Educate yourself. To understand the expected benefits of your acupuncture treatment, do plenty of research on the topic. Talk with your therapist so you know what to expect. Based on the results from this research, new studies are exploring whether integrating acupuncture with psychological interventions targeting illness and self-perceptions can improve patient outcomes. Talk with your therapist to see what new research can be incorporated into your treatment program. Introducing psychotherapy to your routine expands the benefits of acupuncture to include stress, anxiety, and depression reduction. Plus, the benefits will last longer and you will eventually find faster optimal relief.

If anything, this study proves positive thinking aids healing because of the strong link between the physical body and psychological functions. CNN recently suggested different ways to think yourself well, which included catching and reframing your thoughts and getting rid of fear. Simple steps like these, paired with a physical component (acupuncture, exercise, inversion therapy), can be the missing piece in your wellness regimen.

A new study found that patient’s psychological factors affect the benefits gained from acupuncture programs used to treat lower back pain. Published in The Journal of Clinical Pain, the study involved 485 people receiving acupuncture for lower back pain, who completed a total of four questionnaires before, during, and after treatment. RAJIA ACKLEY Luxury and Investment Realtor

As an entrepreneur, successful business owner, international business ambassador and philanthropist, longtime Central Florida real estate professional Rajia Ackley wears many hats . . . and wears them all well. The hat she’s worn the longest – and perhaps the one that fits best – is that as the founder and CEO of one of Metro Orlando’s oldest full-service real estate companies, Coldwell Banker Ackley Realty, in business since 1984. Her longevity in an industry having as many peaks and valleys as the Himalayas speaks volumes about her business acumen and ability to adapt to a constantly morphing marketplace and delivering the same high-level professional services her clients deserve. Change, she says, is the one constant in luxury real estate. Marketing has shifted from a local to a global focus. More affluent consumers are relying on technology and social media to make their purchase decisions. As a global leader in luxury homes, Rajia, as a Coldwell Banker Previews International Specialist, closely monitors these changes and what she sees is a “future that is open for expansion.” Yes, it’s hard work, but Rajia is used to hard work. She built her two companies (Coldwell Banker Ackley Realty and Ackley Florida Property Management) and professional reputation from the ground up, doing so as a single mother raising two children, Nathan and Kristen. She currently has close to 100 agents and staff. Over the years she has established herself as a global market leader and expert at the highest levels and at every part of the industry spectrum both nationally and internationally– from Previews luxury real estate, new home sales, commercial real estate, and property management/investments. She is also a real estate investor and developer, currently working on an assisted living project of up to 450 units. Rajia is highly regarded for her philanthropy with the Rajia Ackley Family Foundation and her involvement in the Boys and Girls Clubs and Heavenly Hooves – home of the McCormick Research Institute.

She takes great satisfaction in her accomplishments but admits there’s more to be done as the company builds its legacy, including expanding her niche as a luxury home specialist. Joining her in that effort is daughter Kristen, a soon-to-be University of Florida graduate majoring in International Business. And who better to mentor a budding entrepreneur than one who has walked the walk? “Entrepreneurs are motivated to lead rather than follow,” says Rajia. “We are confident that we can turn visions into realities.” “We are passionate which has been the key to my success,” she adds.” I have the same drive and passion today about my business as when I started; “The people I work with know they can trust me to give them extraordinary results!” In the end, passion may be the hat that fits Rajia best.

SAM SMITH The New Classic By Courtney Caggiano

After the world fell in love with his somber single, “Stay with Me,” Sam Smith found himself transformed from a singer of jazzy tunes to a self-possessed hitmaker. Now, after winning four top Grammy awards including “Song of the Year,” Smith is assuring the world that he is music’s new classic.

For the past few years, the vocal pop charts seemed to have been dominated by the ladies of the UK—from the incomparable Amy Winehouse to the groundbreaking Adele, England has had no shortage of female music icons. However, with his velvety vocals and legend-inthe-making status, Smith has turned the tables on critics and fans alike, proving that pop music is not just a ladies’ game.

With his second single, “Money on My Mind,” Smith confirmed that he is well-versed in pop music of the present, eager to please fans with current music that would fit in flawlessly with today’s contemporary hits, but there was still something about Smith’s repertoire that separated him from the rest of the singers with albums on the charts. Smith’s songs hearken back to the simplicity that once defined pop music years ago; when it comes to the instrumentation of his hit singles, less is most definitely more. His tracks feature limited musicality, which allows the focus of his music to be right where it should be: on the song.

Smith first gained attention in 2012 when he was featured on the Disclosure song, “Latch,” and soon after released his own single, “Lay Me Down,” in early 2013. His vocals immediately captured the interest of UK listeners, and his debut studio album, In the Lonely Hour, was released in May 2014 to high praise and critical acclaim internationally.

Lonely Hour, a feature that is evocative of pop standards from artists such as Frank Sinatra and even Patsy Cline–combined with Smith’s contemporary taste, of course. For Smith, however, classic pop songs gain their strength from universal emotion as well as a striking vocal performance. The young singer hopes to bring a sense of honest reflection to his music, aiming to sing songs for his audience, not just to his audience. The immediate success of In the Lonely Hour was due in part to Smith’s haunting—and hauntingly true—stories of unrequited love, perhaps equal in part to his debonair vocal styling rare in a man of 22 years. With a voice strengthened by a broken heart, Smith has topped the charts with the hits from In the Lonely Hour, which was one of only two albums from 2014 to go platinum. However, it was his single, “Stay with Me” that confidently threw Smith into the running for award after award, as well as into the limelight of worldwide fame. The song remained on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart for 43 weeks, taking Smith’s album to sales of 1.2 million copies.

This emphasis on the essence of the song adds a classic element to Smith’s soon-to-be iconic style. Surrounded by strong melodies and musical minimalism, Smith’s vocals become spotlighted in each track on In the

At the 57th Grammy Awards, Smith took home four awards, adding his name to the list of winners for the coveted Best New Artist category. He also received the honors of Song of the Year and Record of the Year for “Stay with Me,” and Best Pop Vocal Album for In the Lonely Hour. Smith was definitely the main event of the night, and “Stay with Me” received attention from old and new fans, to accompany the critical praise it achieved throughout the year. Midway through the award ceremony, Smith performed the song of the night with Mary J. Blige, complete with strings and a choir.

Songs such as “Stay with Me” are just the beginning of Smith’s classic status; the artist finds his style and appearance to have similar importance in defining his career. A fan of clean-cut looks of the mid-century culture, Smith styles himself in timeless pieces that could remain iconic for decades, rather than changing trends that ride the endless waves of fashion. One of the more interesting aspects of Smith that could perhaps be seen as paradoxical to his somewhat traditional style is his determined effort to remain himself, without concern for how well he will be received. When speaking of his debut album after his Grammy wins, Smith told the audience, “Before I made this record I was doing everything to try and get my music heard… I tried to lose weight and I was making awful music. It was only until I started to be myself that the music started to flow and people started to listen.” Smith is unabashedly himself, and with more chart-toppers like “Stay with Me” upon his horizon, he is sure to remain an instant classic, even if he may be a twist on the word.

"THIS EMPHASIS ON THE ESSENCE OF THE SONG ADDS A CLASSIC ELEMENT TO SMITH'S SOONTO-BE ICONIC STYLE."

The weatherman is reporting endless sun and you’re excitedly packing your entire collection of designer sunglasses, sandals and hats. Stop! You don’t have enough time or space and you’re definitely not going to wear six hats, twelve pairs of sunglasses and thirty-two pairs of shoes. Limit yourself to two of each, keeping in mind where you’re going, how far you’ll be walking and how often you’ll be outside. When it comes to your shoes, pick one practical pair of heels or wedges if you can’t live without the height, and make your second pick a practical, cute pair of walking shoes, whether it’s a simple trainer or a sleek sandal.

Both can be worn over your favorite swimsuit for a walk to the beach and paired later with the heels you brought for a quick bite to eat. The last thing you need to think about when you’re running from the beach to shopping to happy hour is keeping track of a clutch or a handheld tote. A crossbody also frees your hands up for a snack or drink on the go, and souvenirs and selfies for your Instagram update later on. You don’t need to pack much to look stylish while you’re away. IRVIN

MAYFIELD

Find out what the beloved jazz trumpeter had to share with Tampa Style Magazine on music and life in New Orleans! By Riesa Pascal

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

New Orleans isn’t just

the birthplace of jazz. It’s a culture and a lifestyle. It’s a magical city filled with creativity, beauty, soul and life. At least that’s what Irvin Mayfield would tell you if you asked him and this New Orleans-born and raised jazz artist definitely has the credentials to say so. For anyone who hasn’t had the pleasure of being introduced to the genius talent that is Irvin Mayfield, please allow me to help. With over a dozen albums to his credit, Mayfield is a Grammy award and Billboard Award winning trumpeter, bandleader, composer, arranger and recording artist. If Buddy Bolden is the founding father of Jazz, Irvin Mayfield is one of his brilliant, accomplished grandsons carrying on his tremendous legacy today. In a world so saturated with heavily produced, negative and oftentimes unoriginal music, Mayfield and his band are bringing something fresh and unique back to life on the airwaves. You don’t have to be a jazz enthusiast to appreciate Mayfield’s immense musical talent and fervent effort to remain true to this genre birthed straight out of the Big Easy over 100 years ago. “The magic of New Orleans is that it’s the only city in the world with its own unique culture, speech, dialect, dance and music. To be from there, to have that history and lineage is very interesting. From Louis Armstrong to Wynton Marsalis, think about all these folks being from this one little small place. There must be something pretty significant going on there for a place to birth that many different types of people and to continue to do it today.” - Irvin Mayfield On December 23rd of 1977, that city birthed a child that would soon become one of this generation’s most impressive, rapidly rising young jazz artist. From studying his first trumpet at the age of 9 and leading his first brass band at the age of 12 to recording his first album at the tender age of 20. Mayfield is a man who’s always on the go. His career is on the fast track to all-embracing success and if you blink then you’ll surely miss it. Mayfield is currently a professor at the University of New Orleans where he also serves as director of the New Orleans Jazz Institute. After being nominated to the National Council on the Arts by President George W. Bush, Mayfield was subsequently appointed to the post by President Barack Obama. As if that wasn’t enough to make your head spin, Mayfield also serves as the artistic director for the Minnesota Orchestra and is the founding director of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, affectionately referred to as the NOJO. The NOJO has headlined all of America’s major performing arts venues and clubs and this February, Mayfield and the NOJO hit the road

yet again for their Spring East Coast Tour. The 19-piece orchestra brought the spirit of jazz out of New Orleans and spread their contagious vibes all around 12 cities spanning from Miami to Fairfield, Connecticut. It was during their tour stop in Tampa that I finally had the immeasurable joy of experiencing the talent, fun and craziness that is Irvin Mayfield and the NOJO for myself. On the evening of the concert, I took my seat at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts and prepared for what I was sure would be a great evening of quality music by Irvin Mayfield and the NOJO. What I wasn’t prepared for, however, was to have my whole world flipped upside down as I suddenly fell in love with jazz in a way I’d never experienced before. From first note to the last, you couldn’t help but to forget all the worries, cares and stresses of life as what happened on the stage before you commanded your attention. Not only is Mayfield a brilliant performer, he’s also an ingenious entertainer. In between serenading the crowd with powerful ballads and original

“THE MAGIC OF NEW ORLEANS IS THAT IT’S THE ONLY CITY IN THE WORLD WITH ITS OWN UNIQUE CULTURE, SPEECH, DIALECT, DANCE AND MUSIC.” tunes, hilarity would ensue as Mayfield would then turn right back around and have the entire theater in stitches with his storytelling and jokes. Despite him poking fun at every band member, it was undeniably clear that there was a special chemistry going on across that stage. There was a bond and presence of family there as tangible and strong as the deep, passionate love they share for the music they were creating. “Jazz is part of the everyday fabric here. If someone turns up to a birthday party with a tuba in New Orleans, that’s cool. That means that’s going to be a party. Even when you don’t play jazz, it’s ingrained in what you do and what you believe.” - Irvin Mayfield 67 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

During my own interview with Mayfield, I would often times suddenly find myself at the receiving end of all the question asking without even realizing it. In just a short conversation with this young man, his interest in people and love for life becomes immediately apparent. This transpires directly into his music and manifest itself even further in the way Mayfield leads his band. They may be called Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, but this group is clearly a team that doesn’t believe in “I.” The level of talent on that stage was remarkable, but even more remarkable was the lack of ego—a void only replaced by the all-encompassing love for their craft, which resonated throughout the group. From Michael Watson’s impassioned rendition of “What A Wonderful World” to Ricardo “Sugarbush” Pascal’s impressive and expressive interpretation of Stevie Wonder’s “The Secret Life of Plants” on the tenor saxophone. From original music and spectacular kazoo playing by Leon “Chocolate” Brown to an upbeat, swinging remix of Annie’s “Tomorrow” by James Williams. From the raw power that emanated from Ed “Sweetbread” Petersen’s tenor saxophone to all the other stunning solos that left the crowd in awe and applause. The entire evening was a true roller coaster of emotions from the high-energy of “Sweetbread on the Levees” to the moving original ballad “May His Soul Rest In Piece,” a touching tribute to Mayfield’s late father whom he lost in Hurricane Katrina. Having grown up in a musical family, I’ve always been surrounded by the tremendous versatility of music’s various forms and genres; however, what Mayfield brought to his performance was something beyond anything I had ever experienced in jazz. I had no idea I was in store for such a dynamic show with immeasurable laughs and an insatiable need to tap my foot along to each and every beat. From managing his New Orleans jazz club, Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse, to recently releasing his second coffee table book, “Irvin Mayfield’s New Orleans Jazz Playhouse Handbook”—there is no shortage of activities keeping Mayfield busy today, yet there is still so much on the horizon for this rising star. Much like the Mayfield-led human train that danced through the Straz Center auditorium as the crowd jumped in and the NOJO performed their final song, “When the Saints Go Marching In,” Mayfield’s career has also been one long party train with a beautiful mix of all ages and races that have come together for the joint purpose of celebrating the magic and beauty of jazz.

In order to better serve our clients and our community, distinguished Attorney, Robert A. Green Jr., will be joining our firm, and our firm’s new name will be Kemp, Ruge & Green Law Group. Attorney Green has been a pillar in the Tampa Bay area ever since he graduated from the University of Florida in 1987. He started his commitment to this community in 1987 with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department where he served as a Detective. After almost a decade of service helping bring criminals to justice, Attorney Green decided he wanted to serve in a different way. He applied to the distinguished Thomas M. Cooley Law School graduating in 1997. While at Cooley, he was the recipient of numerous distinguished student awards for his academic prowess. Rob also was the vice president of the student body and had the honor of delivering the Valedictory Speech in front of his graduating class and the former Michigan Governor John Engler, also a Cooley alumni.

After graduation, Attorney Green returned to Florida to distinguish himself in his new career. For the last 17 years, he has passionately fought for his clients and is an honored member of the “Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum” (admission to this forum is only offered to attorneys who have won multi-million dollar awards and/or settlements). Recently, Attorney Green began looking for a firm to partner with that shared his track record of success and his unwavering commitment to the Tampa Bay Area…naturally, he turned to us.

In just the past year alone, we have received several incredible honors. Inc. magazine named us as one of the top 5,000 fastest growing privately held businesses in the nation, and the number one fastest growing law firm. We were also named to the Tampa Bay Business Journal’s Fast 50 for fastest growing privately held businesses in the Tampa Bay area for the 3rd year in a row and Florida Business Journals’ Fast 100 for fastest growing privately held businesses in Florida. Most recently, the Bright House Regional Business Awards named us as a top 10 Finalist for Small Business of the Year: the only law firm to earn that distinction. However, the accolades mean little if not paired with greater philanthropic efforts in our community. In the past year, we have added over twenty five new causes to support in addition to our current work with local schools, charities and nonprofits. Furthermore, we continue to serve as the Presenting Sponsor for the annual Chasco Fiesta; a nine day festival honoring Pasco County’s heritage and culture. The proceeds from the festival benefit over thirty different local non-profits, as well. Kemp, Ruge & Green is overjoyed to have Attorney Green as our newest partner as we look forward to 2015 being our most successful year to date.

INSPIRATION By Ro Martinez

If you are stuck in a style rut, seek inspiration and bring out those forgotten pieces hanging in the back of your closet. Inspiration will help you discover a fresh approach and combine those pieces in ways you had not imagined. Stylish people take items from their closet and from others to put together unique outfits that are worthy of imitation. Try combining your favorite black leggings, your boyfriend’s white tank, a cropped military jacket, grandmother’s strand of pearls, and vintage lace-up boots to create a one-of-a-kind look. Not feeling creative? Look to family for inspiration the way Jessica Rios, the designer who dressed our model, does. Her special occasion dresses are elegant in feel, dramatic in

essence, and surprisingly affordable. She shared; “Family is important to me and my inspiration. Who I am is a big part of how I was raised. I was taught to love deeply, give openly, and laugh loudly by my mother. She is my true inspiration. I grew up learning from her and her family values and the value of having a trade. Seeing various fabrics around was always enjoyable to me, I love colors and textures.” Changing your wardrobe may inspire you to act, sing, dance, and dream. Can that oversized sweatshirt and jogging pants make you look fat? Yes, in fact, it can. Designer duds or not, illfitting clothing make you look sloppy and adds 72 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

bulk, doing nothing for your self-esteem. Look to the following for inspiration:

COLOR - Allow your favorite color to

influence your style choices; shades of blue can be paired with gauzy white or khaki for a relaxed nautical look worn on weekends.

FABRIC - Textures and patterns can break up a neutral palette; colorful silk pajama bottoms paired with a tailored black blazer and lacy camisole worn with sandals for a night on the town.

Open your mind to possibilities and become aware of the endless opportunities to be inspired. Erin Rossit, publisher of M & V Magazine, said it best. “... We should not be asking ourselves, ‘Am I creative?’ but rather ‘What inspires me to create?’ Because aren’t we all born with an ability to be creative?” Listen to your inner voice of creativity. Do not squelch it because your mother told you bold colors bring attention to yourself. Tastefully add color to your wardrobe and pick up your mood instantly. The little black dress has a place in everyone’s wardrobe, but throw on a red dress like our model and trained dancer, Keanna, and you will feel energized. You are a product of your environment. The music you listen to, the foods you savor, the art you enjoy, and your roots have a profound influence on you and help shape your future. When designers are stimulated by their surroundings, they allow creativity to flow, becoming artists who see the human form as a blank canvas in need of self-expression. It is easy to meet Francia Fusik, the founder of All in One Decorating Solutions. Just looking at the company’s logo, it says it all. Right above the company name is the universal symbol for OM, which is a sacred syllable uttered in many mantras of the Hindu religion. Although FRANCIA FUSIK is not of the Hindu Religion, when she launched All in One in 2006, she wanted the business to focus on unity and symmetryideals of which she feels the Om reflects . PIER 60 SUGAR SAND FESTIVAL By Alexis Minieri the Master Sand Sculpting Competition, which will allow visitors a chance to watch the masters at work.

Looking for something out of the ordinary to do this April while still being able to enjoy the usual summer fun activities that the Sunshine State has to offer, like frolicking in the ocean waves and gazing at a beachside sunset? Well, your friends at Tampa Style Magazine have done the searching for you.

The ten day sculpting festival includes a variety of free activities including sand sculpting clinics, speed sand demonstrations, a children’s play area, extended Sunsets at Pier 60 hours, fireworks and entertainment. Last year’s festival drew 30,000 visitors and is expected to attract even more guests this year.

The Sugar Sand Walk Exhibit at the 3rd Annual Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival will grace Clearwater Beach with its presence on April 17 through 26. The theme of this year’s festival is “Sugar Sand Tales.” One thousand tons of Clearwater sand will transform into an enchanted storyland, featuring classic fairy tales and modern day literary adventures, where reality and fantasy are brought to life.

Are you a fan of sandcastles? Well, Team Sandtastic loves them and they’re about to blow your minds by putting their skills to the test at this year’s Sugar Sand Festival in Clearwater Beach. Team Sandtastic is a professional sand sculpting company based out of Sarasota that has built displays all over the world. They have been a part of the Sugar Sand Festival since its conception in 2013. Their offerings are vast, ranging from small table-top pieces to 50-foot tall displays.

The Sugar Sand Festival has something for everyone to enjoy. A 21,000 square-foot tent will be filled with sand-sculpted art crafted by world-class sculptors using Clearwater’s internationally-famous sugar sand. Team Sandtastic will return for a third year to sculpt the exhibit and compete in 82

OUT & ABOUT

A labyrinth is not a maze as one may think. A maze is a puzzle with twists and turns that requires logic, using the left side of the brain to focus. A labyrinth, on the other hand, has only one path: unicursal. Labyrinths trigger creativity, intuition, and imagery by using the right side of the brain. There is nothing to figure out, you go in and you go out. The path will always lead you to the center and then out when you are ready.

WALK TO YOUR CENTER,

FREE YOUR MIND Labyrinth Meditation By Christina Nicholson

Meditation in a labyrinth is exactly as it sounds. The process consists of walking a single path quietly and without distraction through the labyrinth. The practice of this meditation can free your mind from discomfort, clarify your path in life, help you find the answers needed and sort through troubled emotions.

With packed schedules, traffic, appointments, work loads, and relationships, it’s easy for the chaos and commotion of life to overwhelm us. If you are tired of life controlling you, a practice of meditation may be your solution. By taking a spiritual walk and meditating in a labyrinth, you can center yourself and turn stress into peace. With over 4000 years of practice of “Circling to the Center,” the symbolism of walking in a labyrinth relates to wholeness.

The proper steps to meditation in a labyrinth: Step 1 - To begin a proper meditate in the labyrinth, one must stand at the front entrance and clearly state what the intention of the meditation session will be.

84 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Step 2 - After accomplishing step 1, it is time to center yourself by taking a few deep breaths. This step is vital because now the subconscious mind is working to pay attention and find a way to solve the problem. Step 3 - Before beginning your meditation session start with a short prayer, depending on what religion you practice. Then, decide if you want to walk barefoot or wear shoes. Step 4 - Begin your meditation walk. You may walk quickly or slowly. There is no right or wrong way to walk; everyone has their own way of meditation. Focus on the rhythm of your steps with one foot in front of the other, and don’t forget to breathe regularly and gently. Feel free to pause, to sit, or to lay, depending on when you feel you will reach your center. Step 5 - Once you are centered, you are ready to walk out. Remember to give thanks for what you have learned from within, and the reflection and insight that is to come. Feeling grateful for your meditation session will help with the final resolutions. Meditation is not just for the average working person. Many celebrities practice meditation to remain centered through their busy careers. Here are a few familiar names that advocate meditation: Oprah Winfrey began practicing meditation daily since 2011. “That way of being ‘still’ with ourselves, coming back to the center and recognizing that something is more important than you—it’s more important than the work you are doing, brings a kind of energy, an intention that we have never had before.” -Oprah Winfrey

Paul McCartney began meditation in 1967. The Beatles great album, “The White Album” was inspired by the band’s travel to Rishikesh, India to learn from a guru. Tina Turner started her practice in meditation in the 1960s. She stated, “I felt that where body and subconscious are joined, both are strengthened at the same time. My success is my proof.”

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT By Kourtney Destefano

It’s a known fact that one of

the most important components of skin health is a well balanced diet. As beauty and health “solutions” become increasingly more high-tech and expensive, the best cures for your complexion are still the most natural ones. According to experts, what you put on your plate is more important than what you put on your face. Eat your way to a clear complexion with these skin superfoods.

CARROTS

TOMATOES

NUTS

Tomatoes are rich in vitamin C, which helps keep the skin firm by aiding collagen production. They also contain lycopene, the red pigment that gives them their bright red color. Lycopene stimulates skin circulation, giving your skin a youthful and fresh feel.

Bad skin can be linked to a deficiency in minerals like zinc and selenium, and nuts (specifically pumpkin seeds and Brazil nuts) are a good source of both. Selenium helps increase the number of infection-fighting white blood cells, while magnesium, potassium, and iron are essential to skin health. Walnuts contain omega-3 fatty acids

They’re not just good for your eyes. Carrots also help clear breakouts due to their high levels of vitamin A. Vitamin A helps prevent the overproduction of cells in the skin’s outer layer, the layer where dead cells combine to clog pores, and reduces the development of skin cancer cells.

which improve the skin’s elasticity as well as copper which boosts collagen production.

CHOCOLATE Chocolate lovers, rejoice! Cocoa hydrates your skin, making it firmer and more supple. Dark chocolate contains high levels of flavanol, which is a potent antioxidant. Flavanols reduce skin roughness and protect the skin against sun damage. For maximum flavanol, it’s best to consume chocolate that is at least 70 percent cacao. When applied topically, the caffeine in chocolate may temporarily reduce skin puffiness.

YOGURT The protein in dairy helps with skin firmness, making it more resistant to wrinkle lines.

Greek yogurt is even more beneficial, as the protein content in Greek yogurt is usually double what it is in regular yogurt.

which can help control the side effects of allergic reactions.

ARTICHOKE

One of the cheapest and most accurate methods of achieving clear skin is to flush toxins out of your body by drinking lots of water. Without a sufficient amount of water, the lack of hydration will reveal itself by making the skin appear dry and flaky. Dry skin has less resilience and is more prone to wrinkling. Since cells are made up of water, replenishing the water in your cells helps keep your brain fully functional, thus eliminating stress that causes breakouts. For proper hydration, it is best to drink the recommended 8 glasses of water a day.

Regular consumption has been linked to healthier skin and improved skin luminosity. Artichoke is also frequently used as an herbal remedy in creams and cosmetics because of its high antioxidant potency. When eaten, it is known to ease digestion and lower cholesterol.

Dogs were born to live active lives. To keep your dog healthy and happy, you’ll need to find ways to exercise both his body and mind. One of the most popular ways to do so is by going to a dog park. Rather than simply taking your pup for a stroll around the block, dog parks provide a place for dogs to run freely off-leash and socialize. It’s also a great way to explore your city and connect with fellow local dog owners. Here are some of the top rated dog parks in Orlando that are perfect for active (non-aggressive) dogs and humans alike!

Fort De Soto Paw Playground and Beach 3500 Pinellas Bayway S. Saint Petersburg, FL Fort De Soto is the ideal spot for your water-loving pup. Dogs are allowed anywhere in the park on a six-foot leash except the beach. The Paw Playground is the exception: they’re allowed off leash in the Paw Playground and the corresponding beach area to splash around in the water. The pooch-friendly amenities such as the doggie showers

and drinking fountains for pets and owners are perfect for a hot day. The park also has plenty for two-legged visitors to enjoy: gorgeous parks, picnic areas and an old Spanish fort to explore.

Sand Key Dog Park 1060 Gulf Blvd. Clearwater, FL Sand Key Dog Park is located near the beach, and has separate play areas for large and small dogs, as well as a watering station for both. The park is best known for being clean and uncrowded. It also has two picnic shelters with grills, a playground and even a salt marsh with viewing benches to check out some of Florida’s wildlife.

West Park Dog Park 6402 North Occident St. Tampa, FL Hillsborough County’s first dog park, this park is 5 acres of doggie play heaven. There are two separate play spaces, one for small dogs and one for large dogs, as well as a 6-foot fence to keep your four-legged friends safe. There are water fountains for dogs and owners to refresh themselves, picnic tables, shade trees, a hitching post, and doggie mitt receptacles. The park is also home to a children’s playground and baseball fields, making it a great place for the whole family to enjoy the day outside with their favorite pup.

North Shore Dog Park 7th Ave and N Shore Dr NE. Saint Petersburg, FL Both dogs and owners are known for being well-behaved and friendly at this fenced, off-leash park near the waterfront. The dog park features hydrants, crawl tunnels, benches and picnic tables. There is even a timeout area for the overly excited pooch that needs a few minutes to relax. The park includes other amenities such as a pool, playground, lighted softball field and lighted tennis courts. Woof !
