PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Dear Readers, After 20 years in the style industry, we can confidently say that style is truly timeless. It transcends the fleeting trends of fashion and is rooted in a consistent approach—whatever that approach may be. However, when it comes to personal appearance, a constant recalibration is necessary to avoid being frozen in time. Style evolves, and so must we. From my earliest school days, I have been a magazine enthusiast—captivated by the images and stories within each issue. Over time, this passion grew from simply flipping through pages to producing and assigning my own. Today, I am still driven by the same enthusiasm for the art of magazine-making. Whether a magazine is delivered to your doorstep or your device, printed on glossy stock, or displayed on an iPad or smartphone, one thing remains constant: It is the result of an exceptional team working tirelessly for a discerning audience. Each issue is a beautiful and meaningful package of ideas, words, and images crafted by our group of experts for you, our readers. While technology efficiently delivers news to our desktops, laptops, and phones, magazines offer something more: Context. A piece of Art! They present ideas and images in relation to one another, framed by a larger point of view. Style magazines, in particular, are built on trust and partnership—with our loyal readers and advertising partners alike. So thank you for being with us, and expect even more in the future. Truly Yours,

Sven J. Bode Publisher/Founder P.S. Enjoy this issue of Style, and as we approach election season, take a moment to reflect on the future of our beautiful and prosperous country. Next month is voting time! Choose carefully—with your heart and with your children’s future in mind.

A RECAP OF SEPTEMBER IN CENTRAL FLORIDA: A MONTH OF SUMMERTIME EXCELLENCE!

Fall is upon us and the city is gearing up for the spookiest month of the year, but let’s not forget about all the fun that we just finished experiencing in September! Here are the highlights, just in case you missed it!

got a glimpse into the course’s future, with a sneak peek at exciting projects that will ensure Dubsdread continues to be a beloved community course and venue for years to come.

On September 6th, a new exhibition opened at the Orlando Museum of Art that is sure to leave you feeling ultimate nostalgia! Golden Legacy: Original Art from 80 Years of Golden Books runs through December 1st and invites visitors to experience the nostalgia of Little Golden Books with over sixty masterpieces of original illustrations from the Random House archives. Featured in the exhibition are pieces from beloved picture-book classics like The Poky Little Puppy, Tootle, Home for a Bunny, The Color Kittens, I Can Fly, and many more. The exhibition is organized by The National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, Abilene, Texas.

Orange County Regional History Center celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month on September 14th with their Fourth Annual Celebration of Latin American Arts & Culture. The festivities were highlighted by Central Florida performers representing several Latin American countries and visual artists who will display and sell their artwork. Attendees enjoyed live painting demonstrations, witnessed touching heritage performances, and participated in fun family-friendly crafts and activities.

On September 12th and 25th, a group of Central Florida wine-enthusiasts enjoyed a memorable event with George Miliotes, one of 279 Master Sommeliers in the world and owner of Wine Bar George at Disney Springs. Guests of his 90 minute event ‘Learn to Taste Wine Like a Master Sommelier’ experienced a "blind" tasting of six different wines and learned to taste wine like a professional. Throughout the evening they heard firsthand from George in a relaxed setting about his journey through the wine world and what it takes to become a Master Sommelier. For a century, Dubsdread Golf Course has been a beloved community gem to the City Beautiful. On September 12th, the City of Orlando invited residents to join their Dubsdread 100th Anniversary Celebration. Presented by AdventHealth, the event was a centennial celebration like no other with food, drinks, music, games and prizes, to benefit youth golf and help raise the next generation of golfers. Attendees were encouraged to sport golf-inspired attire as they looked back over the decades of Dubsdread's rich legacy and

Punk In The Park Orlando took over the Central Florida Fairgrounds on September 14th. This marked the second stop for Punk In The Park – American Road Trip, originally known as Southern California’s favorite punk rock and craft beer tasting festival, following May's Road Trip debut at The Cow Palace in San Francisco. The lineup included punk rock legends Alkaline Trio, The Vandals, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, T.S.O.L., Down By Law, Swingin’ Utters, Dwarves, and others. The festival featured band performances on two stages, with no overlapping set times for the maximum enjoyment of those in attendance. In addition to a day full of music, festival attendees could enjoy tastings of delicious craft beers and other craft beverages, including award-winning local and regional favorites with the added tasting pass ticket. On September 15th, RockPit Brewing hosted a heartwarming event, "Bunnies Hops and Brews," presented by Orlando Rabbits Care and Adoptions. The special fundraiser offered a unique opportunity to cuddle, play with, and even adopt adorable bunnies while enjoying a pint of your favorite brew. Those who donated $10.00 even received a free core beer. Whether they were bunny lovers or just looking for a

fun way to spend their afternoon, all who were in attendance loved supporting a great cause and some even found a furry friend to take home! From beginning to end, it was a perfect blend of hops, hops, and hops—hops in your glass, hops in the air, and hops in your heart. It was a fun and educational, 1940's themed evening of whiskey tasting and entertainment at Ivanhoe 1915 on September 16th! Guests of the Whiskey and Food Tasting event could sample one of America's favorite whiskeys, Jack Daniels, and finish with a tasting of the limited edition Jack Daniels Sinatra. From seasoned whiskey connoisseurs to those just starting to appreciate this fine spirit, the event was truly perfect for anyone looking to expand their palate and knowledge with attendees learning about the unique flavors and distilling processes as they sipped and savored one of America's Favorite whiskey brands. Jazz trumpet sensation Arturo Sandoval returned to Casselberry to perform at the free Latin Jazz & Art Festival. Sponsored by the City of Casselberry and WUCF, this concert event enticed all jazz lovers to come and enjoy a spectacular evening highlighted by the award-winning trumpeter. Prior to the concert, some of the area’s greatest Latin visual artists were proud to showcase their works in the Artista Siempre art exhibit. Everything from paintings and sculptures to mixed media masterpieces were on display in Casselberry City Hall, Art House, Art Center and Sculpture House.

IN ADDITION TO A DAY FULL OF MUSIC, FESTIVAL ATTENDEES COULD ENJOY TASTINGS OF DELICIOUS CRAFT BEERS AND OTHER CRAFT BEVERAGES

THE IMPORTANCE OF RESPECT AND UNDERSTANDING IN BUILDING POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS By Natalie Smith

In a world of diverse perspectives, cultures, and personalities, respect and understanding serve as cornerstones for creating harmonious and productive relationships. Whether in our personal or professional lives, embracing these values enables us to build trust, avoid conflicts, and foster a sense of unity among individuals. At its core, respect involves acknowledging the intrinsic worth of every person, while understanding involves taking the time to empathize with their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. RESPECT AS THE FOUNDATION OF RELATIONSHIPS Respect is not merely a formality but a fundamental attitude that recognizes the dignity and value of every individual. It allows us to accept others as they are, without trying to impose our beliefs or judgments on them. When we show respect, we demonstrate that we honor a person’s individuality, regardless of their background, opinions, or behavior. This fosters an environment of mutual trust, where individuals feel safe to express themselves freely without fear of being ridiculed or belittled. In personal relationships, respect is critical for maintaining open communication and emotional intimacy. A lack of respect often leads to misunderstandings and resentment, driving people apart. Conversely, when we treat others with respect, we build a strong foundation of mutual appreciation and support. In professional settings, respect is equally vital. It creates a culture of collaboration, where individuals feel valued and motivated to contribute their best efforts. 18 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

UNDERSTANDING AS A PATH TO EMPATHY While respect is the starting point, understanding deepens the connection between individuals. To truly understand someone requires empathy—the ability to put oneself in another person’s shoes and appreciate their perspective. This does not mean agreeing with everything another person says or does, but rather recognizing that their feelings and experiences are valid. Understanding others involves active listening, being open to new ideas, and suspending judgment. In a world where we often encounter people with different backgrounds, cultures, or ideologies, practicing understanding can help bridge divides. When we make an effort to understand others, we reduce the likelihood of conflict and increase the potential for cooperation and mutual growth. THE BENEFITS OF RESPECT AND UNDERSTANDING Fostering respect and understanding enriches our lives in numerous ways. It helps us navigate differences without falling into anger or frustration, promotes inclusivity, and allows for deeper connections. In turn, these positive relationships contribute to our overall well-being and success in life. By embracing respect and understanding, we pave the way for a more peaceful, compassionate, and cooperative world, one where everyone feels valued and heard.

Maha Chaudhry Fashion for a cause in Orlando is something we love to see, as our beautiful city continues to grow, so do the events, the charities, and of course, the inspiring individuals who bring it all together.

20 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

The Hope for More Foundation hosted its highly anticipated Fashion & Hope event at Fields Motorcars – Bentley Orlando, blending high fashion with a powerful cause. The evening marked the 13th edition of this unique fashion show, which has grown from humble beginnings into one of Orlando’s most impactful charity events.

Founded by Jessica Haines, Hope for More is known for its innovative approach to fundraising, most famously through its Anti-Gala—an event that encourages guests to ditch extravagant black-tie norms and attend as they are, saving their money for charity instead. Fashion & Hope follows this same philosophy, with a fresh twist on the traditional fashion show. This year’s event did not disappoint. Over 14 local boutiques and 75+ models took to the runway, showcasing stunning designs and the latest trends from the Orlando fashion scene. What started as

a small promo event has blossomed into a major production, solidifying its place as a highlight of the Orlando social calendar. In addition to the glamorous displays, the true heart of the night was its mission: raising awareness and support for The Faine House, one of the many local causes championed by the Hope for More Foundation. Every aspect of the event, from ticket sales to community involvement, was geared toward making a meaningful difference for those in need. The night brought together local designers, models, celebrities, and special guests, creating an atmosphere of excitement and

purpose. Guests were treated not only to cutting-edge fashion but also to heartfelt moments that underscored the impact of the foundation’s work. The energy in the room was electric, as the audience cheered for both the stunning outfits and the cause behind them. Fashion & Hope 2024 was more than just a fashion show—it was a celebration of community, generosity, and the power of coming together for a common goal. As the runway lights dimmed, the message was clear: fashion can truly be a force for good, as evident by JR Tanghal, Vice President of Hope for More, who confirmed this year’s

event exceeded expectations and raised $150,000 - a 50% growth from the year prior. The Hope for More Foundation continues to support its key pillars of enhancing child health, empowering domestic violence survivors, supporting veterans and their families, and fostering opportunities for underprivileged youth. With each year, the foundation’s reach and impact grow, making Fashion & Hope a shining example of how style and substance can come together to create real change.

Stepping into the exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, I was immediately enveloped by the history and grandeur of Naomi Campbell’s remarkable career. “NAOMI: In Fashion” is a vivid exploration of a woman who, for over 40 years, has defined not only fashion but culture itself. Campbell is more than a supermodel—she’s a pioneer, a symbol of resilience, and a champion of diversity showcasing her iconic collaborations and her contributions beyond the runway.

The exhibit draws from Campbell’s extensive wardrobe, featuring haute couture and ready-to-wear ensembles from pivotal moments in her career, along with loans from designer archives and pieces from the V&A’s collections. As I explored the exhibit, I was captivated by how it encapsulates Campbell’s journey from a teenage discovery at the age of 15 in Covent Garden to a global fashion icon.

The first section, ‘Becoming Naomi,’ explores Campbell’s childhood and her early dance training, which laid the groundwork for her later success. Born in 1970 in South London, Campbell initially aimed for a career on stage, appearing in music videos for Bob Marley and Culture Club. Her life took a dramatic turn when, at 15, she was scouted by model agent Beth Boldt. By 17, Campbell had moved to New York, where she shared an apartment with fellow model Christy Turlington and quickly immersed herself in the city’s vibrant fashion scene, forming lasting friendships with designers like Marc Jacobs and Anna Sui. By the early 1990s, Campbell was at the forefront of a fashion revolution, becoming one of the first supermodels—a term that came to define her and a select few peers. Celebrated by leading designers such as Gianni Versace, Karl Lagerfeld, and Yves

Saint Laurent, Campbell’s presence was a defining element of the era. The exhibition opens with high-impact clips showcasing Campbell’s legendary ‘walk,’ setting the stage for the journey that follows.

“Her ‘walk’— hypnotic, legendary, commanding.” 26 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Some of Naomi’s most iconic moments include staring in George Michael’s Freedom! ‘90 music video with her fellow Supermodels, her memorable fall at Vivienne Westwood’s 1993 “Anglomania” show wearing nineinch platforms, her early collaborations with Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, and Jean Paul Gaultier. Let’s not forget her silvered sequined Dolce and Gabbana gown worn on her last day of community service, or her iconic covid era airplane outfit with her Burberry cape over a hazmat suit. A powerful selection of photographs added to the beautiful storytelling of her career in fashion. It was curated by her dear friend Edward Enninful, Vogue magazine’s global creative and cultural advisor. One of the most poignant sections of the exhibition focuses on Campbell’s close personal and professional relationship with the legendary designer Azzedine Alaïa. Meeting him during her early days in Paris,

Campbell affectionately referred to Alaïa as ‘Papa.’ His admiration for her sculptural physique, which he described as ‘a perfect body,’ inspired some of his most celebrated designs. Their collaborations created runway magic and set new standards in fashion. Her journey leads her beyond fashion and into activism. Naomi reached a historic achievement in 1988 as the first Black model to grace the cover of Vogue France. Her dedication to advocating for diversity continued with her involvement in the 1989 Black Girls Coalition, alongside Bethann Hardison and Iman. In 2007, Naomi fronted the ‘A Black Issue’ of Vogue Italia, which highlighted the need for greater representation in the industry. Toward the end of the exhibit, there’s a focus on Naomi’s personal life, with one of the most touching displays featuring her British Vogue cover, where she’s photographed holding her daughter. It’s a testament to the woman she’s become—still as powerful and influential as ever, but now embracing a new chapter in her life.

Learn How t Walk Like a Supermode Learn How to Walk Like a Supermodel

A standout feature of the exhibition is the Walk Like a Supermodel interactive. Visitors are given a unique opportunity to learn from Naomi Campbell herself, as she virtually guides them through the key steps to master the runway.

The experience captures the essence of Campbell’s legendary walk, and she shares the following takeaways:

Posture: Keep your shoulders back, chest lifted, chin up, and head straight, with your eyes level at all times. Move with the music: Feel the rhythm and synchronize your steps with the tempo for a fluid, hypnotic stride. Subtle sway: Add a gentle sway of the hips, and let your arms swing naturally as you move with confidence. Command the runway: As you approach the end of the runway, pause, subtly focus your gaze into the camera, and strike your signature pose.

Walk don’t run to view this exhibit. Very demure. Very mindful. Naomi: In Fashion is at the V&A from June 22, 2024, until April 6, 2025

STREET STLE TRENDS: NYFW

Maxi Dresses, Bold Florals, and Vibrant Footwear As Fall 2024 unfolds, New York Fashion Week (NYFW) has illuminated vibrant street style trends for women that are sure to inspire wardrobes worldwide. This season, a blend of comfort, creativity, and eclectic influences showcases the personalities and individuality of fashion-forward women navigating the urban landscape. One standout trend is the return of the maxi dress, reimagined for the cooler months. Designers have embraced bold floral prints that add a whimsical touch to the fall palette. These dresses feature flowing silhouettes, making them perfect for layering. Pairing a floral maxi with a fitted turtleneck adds warmth while creating a chic, bohemian vibe.

Colorful shoes have made a striking impact this season. While autumn traditionally leans toward earthy tones, fashionistas are opting for vibrant hues to inject energy into their outfits. Brightly colored boots or statement sneakers in shades of red, blue, or neon can transform a simple ensemble into a captivating look. This playful approach to footwear complements the floral maxi dresses beautifully.

Blazers and jeans remain a classic combination, yet this fall, the style is being redefined with oversized silhouettes. The oversized blazer has become a wardrobe staple, providing an effortless layering piece that exudes sophistication. Paired with highwaisted, straight-leg jeans, this look balances structured and casual elements perfectly. The addition of a graphic tee or lightweight knit underneath can further personalize this ensemble. Accessories play a pivotal role in Fall 2024 street style, with oversized bags and statement jewelry taking center stage. Chunky necklaces or bold earrings can elevate any look, creating a striking visual appeal. In summary, the street style trends observed at NYFW Fall 2024 reflect a dynamic interplay of comfort and flair. With maxi dresses featuring floral prints, colorful shoes, and the timeless pairing of blazers and jeans, women are embracing their individuality while staying chic and cozy as the season changes.

FALL FASHION

By Omayra Bella

40 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

As summer lingers, the signs of fall are undeniable—cooler evenings and shorter days. Soon, it will be time for a wardrobe update, and I want to help you refresh your closet with some new trends and old favorites. So, let’s dive into the Fall 2024 fashion trends!

FASHION

“Wide leg silhouettes continue to dominate the denim departments... they elongate and flatter most women.” I know it’s still warm outside, and if you’re like me, you’re trying to enjoy every last bit of summer. But there’s no denying that fall is approaching—the evenings are becoming cooler, and it is getting darker much earlier. One day you’ll realize suddenly that it’s time for a seasonal wardrobe overhaul, so I’m trying to make sure that when it comes to evaluating what you currently have, you may give some old favorites a fresh new look. Now let’s examine the Fall 2024 fashion trends: So, what’s new? Wide Leg Jeans: Wide leg silhouettes continue to dominate the denim departments at my favorite retailers, and I’m slowly starting to see more everyday women embracing them. Additionally, I’m delighted to see more full-length versions making an appearance for fall, since I find them much easier to wear with closed-toe shoes and boots. Furthermore, they elongate and flatter most women. Cropped Jackets: No fall wardrobe would be complete without outfit-completing jackets, and this year cropped jackets are making a resurgence, presumably because they look great with high-rise and widelegged denim types. They also look good with straight-leg jeans and flares, in my opinion. I’m seeing a wide range of materials, including denim and blends of wool and twill. Skirts: Skirts are making a comeback as a key component of the autumn 2024 wardrobe after being neglected for a while. Denim skirts come in a variety of lengths, but the long, straight designs are especially

popular. Pleated skirts are becoming more popular, and satiny bias-cut skirts are still in style. Also in style forever are miniskirts. Skirts can be worn for both fancy and casual occasions, paired with anything from sneakers to knee boots and pointed-toe slingbacks to squared-off Mary Janes. Vests: For spring, vests were very popular, but they were a little difficult to find and the better ones went quickly. They are all over the stores this fall. Suit vests are popular right now, and sweater vests are still in style as well. This fall, you can layer your vests over a tank or tee or wear them as standalone items. Regarding what to wear with them, vests and denim skirts seem to be a popular combination. They also go well with jeans. If you want a more formal appearance for work or other occasions, you may wear them with matching or non-matching pants. Pop of Red Color: All the trending Fall fashion lists are dominated by red. Although there are many red dresses and shirts available, I think it’s more appropriate to add a red item as a splash of color. Consider wearing a red ball cap, red Mary Janes, red sling bags, red belts, or even red sneakers. Trousers: This season, relaxed pants are still very popular. For a stylish contrast, wearing them with shoes is the most fashionable look, but there’s good news for those who need work attire as well. Right now, there are a ton of excellent non-denim choices available. In addition to the relaxed silhouettes, there are straight and flared

versions to choose from. Brown Footwear: This fall, brown hues—especially deep, chocolatey tones—are dominating the shoe industry. This is something I became aware of last year, but it’s really taking off for autumn of 2024, and I’m all for it. Having worn a lot of taupe and light beige for years, I think these warmer, darker tones are enjoyable and refreshing. They also go well with the returning darker denim washes for this season. Leopard Print: Yes, the leopard has returned after being absent for a mere minute. I am unable to ignore it. I’ve seen it on almost every list of 2024 Fall trends, and leopard prints are available in various forms at all the bigbox stores. This time around, I think the leopard prints are more refined, elegant, and abstract. These are only a few of the more wellknown fall fashion trends for 2024. Remember that fashion trends are just that—trends. Some stay longer than others, and they come and go. Simply ignore it if it doesn’t fit your style. Uncertain? before you buy a more expensive item, try it out with something cheaper. However, you might want to focus on embracing any of these trends a little more over the next few months if they seem like your style. I personally recommend checking out the big box stores such as Macys, Bloomingdale, Neiman Marcus at The Mall at Millenia Mall for these fashion trends. Web. www.omayralabella.net IG @omayralabella

I’m always thrilled to cover such strong fashion presentations, and Lafayette 148’s Spring 2025 collection certainly delivered. Presented during NYFW at the newly completed 50 Ninth building in New York’s Meatpacking District, this showcase was a remarkable fusion of art and fashion. Creative Director Emily Smith invited us into the intimate world of an artist’s studio for Spring 2025. “Spring is synonymous with new beginnings, and drawing is essentially the foundation of all creative endeavors,” Smith noted during the presentation in a chic Manhattan loft. This season, the collection was deeply inspired by the art of figure drawing, with charcoal playing a pivotal role in shaping the collection’s elements.Smith expanded on the creative vision behind the collection, stating, “Here was our starting point for Lafayette 148’s Spring 2025 collection: translating the pared-back gestures and

squares in shades of beige, white, blue, orange, and yellow. The subdued color palette included tones like pale chalk yellow and a deep blue inspired by charcoal paper. A standout piece was a long jacquard dress in pencil gray and chalk yellow, which beautifully captured the tactile appeal of charcoal dust.

The Spring 2025 presentation at 50 Ninth was a testament to Lafayette 148’s ability to fuse art with fashion. Guests were welcomed into a studio-like environment, where large-format projectors displayed hand-drawn sketches and the sound of charcoal on paper—central to the season’s theme—created a multisensory experience. The collection’s artistic presentation made a lasting impression, showcasing Lafayette 148’s innovative approach to modern fashion. Additionally, Lafayette 148’s Fall 2024 collection, “The Collector’s House,” has also caught my eye. Drawing inspiration from the lesser-known modernist NYC landmark, the Rockefeller Guest House, and the legendary art collector Blanchette Rockefeller, this collection marries art, architecture, and nature in a sophisticated manner that reflects Rockefeller’s discreet elegance.

From contoured lines to smudged charcoal prints and pastel dust textures, the collection explores both the craftsmanship and beauty that comes from capturing the human body in its purest form.”

Currently, I’m particularly enamored with a skirt from Lafayette 148’s Fall 2024 collection, featuring reflective sequin paillettes that channel the chrome accents of mid-century modern furnishings—an unexpected standout for the new season’s occasions. And as I look ahead to Spring 2025, I’m eagerly eyeing the new seasonal yellow chalk shade in the collection, which promises to be a vibrant and refreshing addition to the season’s palette.

This vision aligns seamlessly with Lafayette 148’s foundational ethos. As conveyed on their website, “We are born and raised in the spirit of NYC.” Named after the SoHo address where the brand was founded, Lafayette 148 is a global lifestyle brand led by women, for women. Established in 1996, the brand’s journey reflects a commitment to creating beautiful clothing tailored to women’s unique needs—our wardrobes, our rich and fluid lives. The sense of purpose behind the Spring 2025 collection was apparent in every detail. The fluid lines of charcoal sketches were reimagined as fringe details along the bodice of a long-sleeve maxi dress. The dust from a charcoal pencil inspired a subtle curvilinear jacquard pattern, while the smudges created by a hand brushing against a drawing were transformed into a striking print on a suit and trench coat. Notably, the print’s placement was designed to flow seamlessly across the garment, uninterrupted by side seams to preserve the swooping lines. Inspiration also came from the organized chaos of a working studio. The half-finished drawings and mood images tacked to the walls led to the creation of a cream knit sweater with hand-knitted flaps and an A-line dress adorned with a mosaic of small fabric

NYFW 2024: FALL ELEGANCE

Layering luxe and style for Florida’s fall weather The streets of New York City during Fashion Week are always alive with style inspiration, and 2024’s Fall/Winter collection was no exception. This year’s trends revolve around sleek tailoring mixed with bold, eye-catching accessories. Think oversized outerwear, earthy-toned turtlenecks, and a strong emphasis on leather detailing—from shoes to bags. A key takeaway is the mix of luxury with streetwear, giving rise to a functional yet effortlessly stylish aesthetic. Cropped trousers, layering with chunky knits, and statement pieces like patterned scarves and bold bags

were front and center, blending practicality with high fashion. The runway influences were clear as well— elevated basics combined with unique textures like wool, leather, and knits created a polished look that can transition from day to night. Designers played with silhouettes, using tailored blazers paired with relaxed, wide-leg trousers and structured duffle bags. In this year’s street style, versatility reigns supreme, with layers taking the forefront, making outfits adaptable for any fall occasion.

ACTORS WHO REFUSED TO SAY A

LINE

46 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Although an actor should never overstep the role of a project’s creator, director or producer, sometimes a situation can arise where they don’t fully love the script they’re giving and feel inclined to say so. Depending on how famous and detrimental to the project they are, some Hollywood stars are able to successfully push back against the script, suggest changes, or even go completely off-script in an impromptu moment of wanting to make their lines better. Take the following eight celebrities for example.

HERE ARE EIGHT CELEBRITIES WHO DIDN’T STICK TO THEIR SCRIPT, BUT DID IT ACTUALLY MAKE THE PROJECT BETTER? YOU BE THE JUDGE! By Riesa Pascal

CELEBRITY SOUP

ROBERT DOWNEY JR. In the original scripted ending for The Avengers, Tony Stark was supposed to say, “What’s next?” after suddenly waking up from unconsciousness, but this final line didn’t work for Robert Downey Jr. The Iron Man star pushed back and requested that they make his final lines “snappier.” Multiple new ideas were formed and the crew ultimately decided on Stark opening up with “please tell me nobody tried to kiss me” before he went on to ask if they could all go out for shawarma. Say what you will, but producers were clearly big fans of the change as a now-iconic scene was later added to the film’s end credits which showcased this memorable moment of an Avengers team meal of shawarma. IAN WRIGHT Any diehard sports fan knows that there are some very simple, unspoken rules when it comes to supporting your team and one of those is that you do not praise your rival. For former footballer Ian Wright, this rule was put to the test when he made an appearance on Ted Lasso. Producers wrote a line for Wright that required him to say “You know, it’s gonna be a tough game for Richmond because Tottenham are a great side.” As innocent as the line was, it still involved praise of Tottenham who is a rival of Wright’s team Arsenal. Needless to say, the line was a big no-no. Wright apologized to producers, but let them know that he was not going to say that line and even joked that he would never be able to return to north London if he did so the line was ultimately scrapped. JANE FONDA Sometimes pushback over a line doesn’t have to do with ego, but more so personal convictions. This was the case for Jane Fonda in one episode of the hit show Grace and Frankie. In an interview about the show, co-creator Marta Kauffman spoke about a script that required Fonda’s character Grace to say “Jesus Christ.” As someone of Christian faith, Fonda let creators know that she drew a line at taking the Lord’s name in vain so Kauffman agreed to remove the line in question. She explained her reasoning for the easy resolution saying, “These four actors are the most professional, glorious people I’ve ever

worked with. I love them. So when they have an issue, it’s not that they’re being divas. It’s not that they’re being selfimportant. They have a real issue.” PATRICK WARBURTON In a similar bout of personal convictions, Family Guy’s Patrick Warburton once shared that he refused to participate in an episode with a line he deemed to be too offensive—and it wasn’t even a line that his character says! Warburton, who voices Joe Swanson on the show, shared that the episode was so offensive, he wouldn’t even repeat the line out loud. All he would say is that it had to do with Christ on the cross but “there was no humor in it and it was just so, so horribly offensive.” He said that this was the only time he was so offended by a joke that he wouldn’t record it, which says a lot considering Family Guy is a show that is intentionally filled with raunchy and offensive jokes. Warburton explained to producers that he knew he signed up for a really offensive show and didn’t want to get in the way of production, but that he personally didn’t want anything to do with the episode if the line remained. The producers ultimately agreed with him and the joke was pulled. HARRISON FORD Ask any Star Wars fan what the most memorable lines are from the franchise and you’re bound to hear “I know” included somewhere in their list. In Empire Strikes Back, just before he is frozen in carbonite, Han Solo was supposed to say “I love you too” in response to the heartfelt “I love you” said by Princess Leia. However, Harrison Ford didn’t believe the sappy line fit the gruff, cocky personality of his character so Ford opted for an impromptu change. The franchise star actually improvised Solo’s now iconic “I know” right on the spot. Not exactly the most romantic response to ‘I love you,’ but certainly the most memorable one when it comes to Star Wars. CRISPIN GLOVER If there was a prize for the most lines contested and removed by an actor, that would have to go to Crispin Glover. The Charlie’s Angels actor originally turned down the role of the Thin Man because he believed the villain’s dialogue

was so terrible. Instead of a character who’s dialogue was all expositional and unnecessary, Glover’s suggestion for improvement was that the villain should be a mute instead. Surprisingly, the director agreed with him and rewrote Thin Man’s character as a mute. Glover accepted the part and played the memorable role phenomenally all without having to say a single word. ROBERT REED I have a lot of respect for an actor who refuses to give false information on screen, especially when it’s a detail as insignificant as the one opposed you’re about to read about! Robert Reed, who played Mike Brady on The Brady Bunch, was known to often fact-check his scripts to ensure all of his character’s lines were accurate and free from false information. In the episode in question, Carol Brady and Alice are cooking with strawberry preserves. Mike was supposed to enter the room and state that the house “smelled like strawberry heaven.” Reed did a little research of his own and learned that strawberries don’t smell like anything while being cooked. As a result, he said he didn’t feel comfortable saying the “incorrect” line. After a bit of back and forth arguing, it was clear that Reed wasn’t going to budge so the line was slightly altered to “I do believe I’ve died and gone to strawberry heaven.” FRANCES BAVIER Younger readers may not recall or know The Andy Griffith Show, but the beloved sitcom centered around a widowed sheriff who lives with his son and Aunt Bee in a small, North Carolina town. Fraces Bavier played Aunt Bee and was notoriously difficult when it came to pushback of lines that bothered her. One of the more amusing examples was revealed in the book Andy and Don: The Making of a Friendship and a Classic American TV Show by Daniel de Visé. Apparently Bavier didn’t want to say her character’s line “always wear clean underwear” in Return To Mayberry, a TV movie sequel to the classic sitcom. The author recalled Bavier saying, “I will not say underwear. I have never said underwear, and I will not say underwear now.” Fortunately the other actors and crew weren’t too bothered by the odd request and the line was removed. ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM | 47

The world of high-performance vehicles has just been redefined with the debut of the Lamborghini Temerario, a revolutionary super sports car that blends breathtaking performance with next-level comfort. Unveiled at Monterey Car Week 2024, the Temerario sets a new standard for luxury sports cars, showcasing Lamborghini’s commitment to innovation and electrification. Equipped with a 920 CV twin-turbo V8 hybrid powertrain, this cutting-edge vehicle offers an unparalleled driving experience that is both thrilling and environmentally conscious. Automobili Lamborghini has long been synonymous with performance and style, and the Temerario, its latest creation, is no exception. As the second model in the Lamborghini High Performance Electrified Vehicle (HPEV) range, following the highly successful Revuelto, the Temerario marks the full hybridization of Lamborghini’s line-up. With the market release of the Urus SE, the luxury brand now offers an entirely hybridized range, aligning with Lamborghini’s ambitious Direzione Cor Tauri strategy—a plan aimed at reducing emissions while maintaining the exhilarating performance that the marque is known for.

At the heart of the Temerario is its remarkable twin-turbo V8 engine, designed and developed from scratch at Lamborghini’s headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese. This engineering marvel, combined with three electric motors, generates a staggering total power output of 920 CV. What truly sets the engine apart, however, is its ability to reach an astonishing 10,000 rpm, making it the only production super sports car engine capable of such speeds. The performance figures are equally impressive: the Temerario can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in just 2.7 seconds and boasts a top speed exceeding 340 km/h (210+ mph). According to Stephan Winkelmann, Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, the Temerario is “a genuine ‘fuoriclasse’,” a car in a class of its own. Winkelmann emphasizes that every new Lamborghini must not only surpass its predecessors in terms of performance but also be more sustainable. The introduction of the hybrid powertrain in the Temerario is a testament to Lamborghini’s commitment to reducing emissions while continuing to deliver vehicles that thrill the senses. From a design standpoint, the Temerario is as innovative as its powertrain. Sleek lines, aggressive contours, and signature

Lamborghini styling make it a visual masterpiece, while the advanced hybrid technology ensures that it is not only fast but also eco-friendly. With the Temerario, Lamborghini has achieved the perfect fusion of form and function, delivering a vehicle that looks stunning and performs at the highest level. FAHRA DAWOOD, DDS Pediatric Dental Group My dedication to working with children began during my time providing dental services at the Special Olympics in New York. That experience ignited a passion for helping children of all ages and needs, which has since become the most rewarding aspect of my career as a dentist. The opportunity to alleviate their fear of dental visits, address and resolve dental pain or discomfort, and set them on a path to lifelong oral health is profoundly fulfilling. The highlight of my day is witnessing a child’s relieved smile at the end of treatment, especially when they admit that their visit was not as frightening as they anticipated. Originally from Mombasa, Kenya, I pursued my dental education in India, where I met and married my soulmate. Shortly after our marriage, we relocated to the United States.

training I received strengthened my resolve to specialize in pediatric dentistry. This experience enabled me to further my passion at Nova Southeastern University, where I deepened my expertise in caring for young patients and successfully graduated to become a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist. Outside of my professional life, I cherish spending time with my husband and son. We moved to Orlando to enjoy the vibrant theme parks and the pleasant Florida climate. Our family time often involves exploring new restaurants, visiting theme parks, and socializing with friends. Personally, I have a range of interests including baking, reading, swimming, and taking long walks. These activities provide a balance to my professional life and contribute to my overall well-being.

DR. CAROLYN NGUYEN Sage Dental of Alafaya Dr. Carolyn Nguyen, a distinguished dentist based in Orlando, Florida, has been committed to her profession since her graduation from Temple University School of Dentistry in 1999. Her path to dentistry was shaped by an early exposure to the field during her involvement in a Buddhist youth group. It was here that one of her leaders, then a dental student, ignited her curiosity and interest in dentistry. This pivotal moment inspired Dr. Nguyen to start volunteering at a dental office, where she discovered a passion that has remained at the heart of her career.

Outside of her professional life, Dr. Nguyen is a proud single mother of two grown children, who she describes as the greatest joys of her life. She balances her career with her personal passions, which include practicing Buddhist meditation—a discipline that helps her maintain mindfulness and compassion in her daily interactions. Dr. Nguyen also loves traveling, particularly with her daughter, exploring new cultures and cuisines. In her downtime, she enjoys the escapism of K-drama and Chinese dramas, and she’s an avid poker player, finding excitement in the strategic nature of the game.

With over two decades of experience, Dr. Nguyen is known for her warm and compassionate approach to patient care. She finds immense joy in making people laugh and smile, a philosophy that she integrates into her dental practice. For Dr. Nguyen, dentistry is not just about treating teeth; it’s about enhancing the quality of life for her patients. Her dedication to her craft is evident in the way she treats each patient with personalized care, ensuring that they feel comfortable and valued.

Dr. Nguyen’s infectious laughter and vibrant personality are often noted by those who know her, traits she credits to her family’s genes. Fluent in both Vietnamese and English, Dr. Nguyen is able to connect with a diverse patient base, offering exceptional care tailored to each individual’s needs. Currently, she practices at Sage Dental of East Orlando, where she continues to make a positive impact on her patients and the community.

HEALTH

BREAST CANCER Awareness

T H E P O W E R O F E A R LY D E T E C T I O N & C O M M U N I T Y S U P P O R T October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, supporting survivors, and encouraging early detection. As one of the most common cancers affecting women, breast cancer touches millions of lives each year. In the U.S., 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. However, early detection, advancements in treatment, and strong community support have dramatically improved survival rates. Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in 1985 and has since grown into a global movement. The goal is not only to spread awareness but to inspire action—whether it’s funding research, supporting patients, or educating others about the importance of regular screenings.

Breast Cancer

The Importance of Early Detection

Early detection saves lives. According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate for localized breast cancer is 99%. Mammograms, recommended annually for women aged 40 and older, are vital for catching the disease early. Self-exams and awareness of warning signs—like lumps, changes in breast shape, and unexplained pain—are equally important.

Awareness Month

This October, take action by scheduling a mammogram, joining a fundraising event, or donating to a breast cancer charity. 66 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Supporting Survivors and Fighters In addition to raising awareness about prevention, October is a time to honor those who have fought or are fighting breast cancer. It’s an opportunity to celebrate survivors and offer support to those currently undergoing treatment, with communities coming together for fundraising and awareness events. Research and Progress

Fundraising efforts over the years have led to major breakthroughs in breast cancer treatment. From more targeted therapies to less invasive surgeries, these advancements offer hope for better outcomes. While there is still work to be done, progress in immunotherapy and personalized medicine is on the horizon, offering new options for patients. How You Can Get Involved

This October, take action by scheduling a mammogram, joining a fundraising event, or donating to a breast cancer charity. Spread awareness through social media, wear pink, and talk to your loved ones about the importance of early detection. As Orlando Style Magazine joins in the fight against breast cancer, we encourage our readers to stay informed, support those affected, and take proactive steps to protect their health. Together, we can make a difference.

LIVING ‘N HARMONY

TAKE A HOLD OF YOUR

FEAR By Maha Chaudhry

68 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

LIVING ‘N HARMONY

“BY TURNING FEARFUL THOUGHTS INTO POWERFUL ACTION, YOU SHIFT FROM BEING CONTROLLED BY FEAR TO BEING EMPOWERED BY IT.”

Fear can be your worst enemy, but it can also be your protective friend, it all depends on how you choose to perceive it. When it comes to our thoughts, fear can be a scary place. It takes form in negative thinking and self-limiting beliefs, often leading us to craft worse-case scenarios in our mind. We have all been down the rabbit hole of fearful thinking - leading from one negative thought to another. However, we have the power to change these fearful thoughts into a more productive way of thinking. Turning fearful thoughts into powerful action involves transforming anxiety into motivation, and using fear as a catalyst for growth rather than a paralyzing force. Here are five practical steps to help you do that: 1. Acknowledge the Fear

Start by recognizing and accepting your fear. Ignoring or denying it only strenghtens its power. Fear is a natural human response, and acknowledging it allows you to take control. By accepting it, you move from being a passive victim of fear to someone who can actively respond to it. Example: Instead of saying, “I’m scared,” reframe it as, “I feel fear, but I can take action despite it.”

2. Understand the Root of the Fear

Fear often stems from uncertainty, past failures, or fear of the unknown. By identifying what you’re truly afraid of, you can better address it. Ask yourself, “What’s the worst that can happen?” and “Why does this scare me?” Example: Write down your fears, analyze them, and break them down into manageable pieces. Once you see them clearly, they’ll seem less overwhelming. 3. Convert Fear into a Challenge

Fear is often a sign that something important is at stake. Instead of viewing fear as a threat, view it as a challenge. Fear can be a motivator to push you out of your comfort zone and help you grow. Reframe it as a challenge to overcome rather than a signal to retreat. Example: Treat fear like a signal that you are entering a new growth zone. Instead of avoiding it, say, “This is an opportunity for me to rise to the occasion.” 4. Set Small, Actionable Goals

Example: If the fear is about a big project or a life decision, identify the first small step you can take today. Momentum will build as you accomplish each small task. 5. Take Immediate Action

Fear often thrives on inaction and overthinking. Once you’ve broken your fear into smaller steps, take immediate action on the first one. Even a small action signals to your brain that you are in control, not the fear. Example: Use the “5-second rule” (from Mel Robbins)—count down from five and then immediately take action. This prevents your brain from talking you out of it. By turning fearful thoughts into powerful action, you shift from being controlled by fear to being empowered by it. Recognize fear as a motivator, break it down, and take immediate steps toward your goals. Each action you take chips away at fear’s power and builds your confidence. Remember, courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s taking action despite it.

Fear can make the task ahead seem too large to handle. Break down your goal into smaller, achievable steps. This reduces the overwhelm and builds confidence. Every small step taken towards your goal is an action that diminishes the power of fear.
