STYLEZINE MAGAZINE : AUGUST 2010

Is it just me, or does it seem lately over the past two years that every young wannabe shoemaker worth 3-cents is throwing their hat into the sneaker market. It seems every time I hit up a sneaker-site there is a preview of some new brand of sneaker that just appeared. And God forbid you aren't able to get your hands on a pair of said brands new "Only available in "Some-place-you-will-never-visit-in-yourlife" or on the internet in "exclusive numbers". THEN you run the risk of not being "cool" and for some people they would rather die than not be cool. I myself must admit I became a "NewBrand" whore for the better parts of '08 and '09. However in '10, I have to agree with my boy Muffy who said "All that new-brand stuff is finished...".

I'll buy them right off your feet! That’s what a hot pair of Classics can do.

In my talks with other sneaker heads, S m i t t y, M u f f y a n d Stefan Davis of Airbrush Junkies I have found that we all are on the same page. STICK TO THE CLASSICS THIS SUMMER SEASON! And by classics I mean the classic brands. Come on now let's be REAL. I've never walked through any mall in the latest Supras, Creative Recs, Clae's or any other new trendy brand and had a dude give my footwear that "Oh [CENSORED] Those are so Fresh!" look. Now when I rock a pair of retro Nike's or Adidas... Dude's will literally stop dead in their tracks jaws will drop open and you almost always hear "Bey where you get them from?! THEY SOOOOO FRESH!!!! Bey I'll buy them right off your feet!!" That’s what a hot pair of Classics can do. What are the Classic Brands you ask? They are the brands you know and love. The Juggernaut that is Nike (and yes the Jumpman brand falls under this so let's not go down that road), along with Adidas, Reebok, and Converse. Yes there are some other staple brands out there but any hot sneakers from these four brands and you’re "in like Flynn"! They all have everything you need to compliment any look from the young and fresh to the grown and sexy. They are The Classic Brands people. Fall

What are the classic

in Love with them all over again. Quit "sweet hearting" with all these lil' young brands coming left, right and center and stick to the tried and true. Retro Nikes are going to be the rage this summer. Many styles are available at The Sports Centre and Hoffer and Sons. If you’re a vintage head like me pull out them pairs you got in hibernation and let em' shine. If you’re like Muff, pounce on the latest retro releases, via online shopping and make sure you ‘flyer’ than the rest of them. Most importantly make SURE you have a crisp white pair of sneakers in your collection.

Nike Cortez

Nike Air Force One

These can be Adidas Stan Smith's Nike Air Force 1's (for the diehards who won't let it die) or Converse All Star's. If you’re on Baller Status like Smitty and Stefan, you

can pull out a pair of Gucci sneakers and make em' real jealous (yeah Gucci a classic high-end brand). However you chose to get your fly on, you can't go wrong with the Classic Brands this summer.

Quit sweetheartin’ with all these lil’ young brands…stick to the tried and true.

In today’s society, we often ignore those men who are positive role models, the men who play multiple roles and are able to excel at all of them. Freddie Lightbourne, 28, is just one of those men and more. The father, athlete, model, law enforcer and personal trainer is the modern day superman, a universal soldier who does more than the average person would imagine. FREDDIE LIGHTBOURNE AS THE

UNIVERSAL SOLDIER

Government Name: Freddie Alexander Lightbourne Jr. Age: 29 Birth City: Nassau, The Bahamas Notable Events: Mr. Caribbean Bahamas/Intl Currently working on: Everything Celebrity comparisons: T.I, Will Smith, Incredible Hulk Meaning behind the nickname "Slugger?” “My dad gave me that nickname as a child and it just stuck. He’s been calling me that since before I could remember. He told me that it came from a TV show about this lil' dude just running around causing mayhem. They called him ‘Little Slugger’. Now most people know me as ‘Slugger’.” At what age did you start exploring professional physical fitness and coming into your own? “Well, about 3 years ago that I could actually make a name for myself and potentially profit from it. People in the bodybuilding and fitness world started to notice me and really pushed me to take it seriously. Since then, I’ve competed in and won the Mr. Caribbean Bahamas/ Intl titles for 09/10 and that further boosted my confidence in being able to take this fitness thing to another level.” How many staff members are there in Team Slugger and is it only for the celebrities and famous at heart? “Team Slugger has almost 20 members, and right now I'm talking to a few people that are interested in joining”, he says with a smile. “I’m real proud of it man. I get joy from having a great time with my crew and just putting in work in the gym. There is absolutely nothing better than seeing people that came to you for help with a goal, actually

achieve them. As far as who can join the team…ALL are welcomed. All you need is commitment.” Have you hand picked protégé that you plan to pass your vast knowledge of the industry to? Nah, not yet. There are a few of the team members that are a few steps ahead of the others but I’m not sure if they’re interested in taking it as far as I have. But I’m not like some people that wanna keep the knowledge for themselves in fear that the student will someday overtake the teacher. If u have a question just ask, and I will answer. As soon as I find someone that wants the knowledge I will give it.” Was Freddie once someone else’s protégé and if so, who got you into weight lifting and fitness? “Well to be completely honest the reason I started working out was because of one of my boys Jason who we called ‘Wasp’. He was ripped and ALL of the women liked him because of it. So I figured I needed to get a body myself. Don’t judge me”, he said playfully, pausing briefly. “But the person that really told me how to get it all together and how to get to the level I wanted to be at is Stephen Robinson”, he continued. He knows all of the tricks to the trade. So I just soaked it all up and progressed.”

It seems like you materialized out of thin air before the Mr. Caribbean competition, so what was Freddie before all that? “Well, before Mr. Caribbean you’d probably find me on a basketball court. That's my 1st love. Everybody on the basketball scene in the

UNIVERSAL SOLDIER

Bahamas knew who I was but the Mr. Caribbean Titles just blew me out of the water. I now have access to a lot more people, some of whom I may not have been able to reach through ball.” Where do you get your motivation from and how do you continue to evolve with each passing month? “My motivation is remaining on top. Remaining the best. The titles I’ve won put me on the map. My motivation is now staying on the map and creating my own space on it. I've already given up the local title to Donovan Ingraham and the Intl title will be handed over in Oct so I’m motivated by trying to remain relevant. Also I have to stay on point for my team. I can’t push them to do something if I can’t do it myself. I’m a bit of a show off. So wherever I am I have to have the best body. All of that motivates me to stay at it. There are days I want to take off, but I’m allergic to falling off.”

As a police officer, are there things that you see that we as the general public don't see? “So many things man! Most people only read, or hear the news. I live it. I see murders first hand. Some days are really crazy. Watching some guy your own age die in the streets really makes you appreciate your friends and family.” People always bashing the police for not doing their jobs, you want to

Everyone can’t help but comment on your near perfect physique, was that achieved all natural or are you a supplement freak? “Supplements are involved in my diet. I don’t know anyone that has a body like mine naturally. I know people do it, I just don't know any. But supplements alone will NOT get it done. Hard work is the only way to look like I do. The reason I’m cocky at times is because I’ve worked so hard for the body I have. If supplements alone would get people to look like me everyone would do it.”

STYLEZINE MAGAZINE : AUGUST 2010

address that…right here, right now? “People always try to define what our jobs are. That’s the first problem. Some people come to the police because a neighbor threw trash into their can! Can you believe that! But the public needs to realize that resources are limited. There are about four thousand officers to police the entire 700 islands and cays; so they need to bear with us. Now I will admit that there is a lot of areas we can improve in but I trust that Comm.

“Well she will be 4 on Aug 14 so most of my advice is about schoolwork. I want her to have every opportunity in life and I try to let her know now that getting a good education is the most important in her life. Every gift she gets is accompanied with something educational. And she knows that

We know that you are a father, so at times, do you feel the responsibility to protect your daughter from the outside world? “Yes I do. That’s one of the things that I struggle with the most right now. How much do I let her see and when do I take her in, even as simple as her playing with other kids. I listen to them talk and the minute I hear something I’m not cool with it's time for her to come inside. Or if the playing gets a bit rough I try to decide if I’m going to let her get through it on her own or if I’m going to step in” he says thoughtfully. “9 times out of 10 I step in” he laughs to himself. “I’m extremely protective of Peyton.” As a single father, are you concerned about the thing’s your daughter is exposed to as far as her mother’s relationship(s) with other men are concerned? “Well I trust her mom's judgment. She's more protective of Peyton than I am. Honestly it wouldn’t be fair for me to expect her not to be around other men. Her mom is an attractive woman and I know that she will date. So I just trust her mom to do what’s best for her. As she knows that I will.”

once she does well in school anything she wants is hers. As she gets older the advice will change. When she gets to the age where boys come into play...well that’s another story” he says with a sigh.

So when you talk to your daughter, what sort of advice do you give to her? STYLEZINE MAGAZINE : AUGUST 2010

UNIVERSAL SOLDIER

Greenslade, his Dep Mr. Dames and the executive team are taking the force in the right direction. Most of the people bashing the police are complaining about things they have no clue about. The majority of the country I think would agree that we are doing a relatively good job.”

“The most successful event is easily Peyton's birth. She's my greatest gift from God and the thing I’m most proud of. Aside from her it would have to be the Intl title I won last year. Anytime you can go somewhere representing your country and win I think is a huge deal. I like to look at it as me doing my small part to keeping The Bahamas on the world's mind. Like we’re here.” There’s a lot of “extra” attention that comes along with “fame” anywhere in the world. How do you handle the fame on the island, primarily the attention from the ladies? “The ‘fame’ ain’t really nothing to me. I’ve been ‘cool’ for a minute” he chuckles. “But with every success come fakes. So the one thing I had to do was watch out for the people, men AND women that want to be around because of what you've accomplished. That’s an easy fix though, I keep my circle small. As far as the ladies go…I just smile say hi, maybe give them a hug and pose for a picture if they want one. That’s all I’m prepared to say at this time. Haha!” Side note, can the ladies expect a “Slugger Calendar” sometime soon? “Yeah man definitely. I’m actually trying to get it together as we speak. So ladies are on the look out for that!”

If you could choose any profession to be involved in right now besides your current job, what would it be? “Any pro-sport. It must be a great feeling to be playing a sport that you love as your job and getting paid very well to do it.” With every success story there is a history of rivalry. Who or what would you say is your greatest rival? “Rival! Me? I can't say that I have one really. I’m sure there are dudes that don’t like me just because of my success, but no one has ever let me know that.” What’s it like being in law enforcement? Have you ever been shot? “Shot? Haha, no. Shot at? A couple times. As far as the job goes...just like any other there are good days and bad days. It does make you kind of cold though. Seeing so much death and the bad side of human nature makes you real cold, but you have to be to make it home alive and that’s what’s most important. What’s in your survival pack when you have long days at police headquarters? “Usually all I need is my blackberry and charger and I’m good to go. If there's a hurricane warning, where I’m at work for a few days, I throw my iPod into the mix.” What’s next on the agenda for Freddie? Where do you see yourself and your brand in the next 10 years?

Love life...Trey Songz "neighbors know my name". Career...as far as everything I do including the modeling and stuff I’d say Usher’s and T.I.’s "My life your entertainment". FASHION INSPIRATION ON FACEBOOK?

It’s 1 a.m. and I’m here trying to put together my men’s fashion article. Like most people, instead of focusing on my writing though, I’m getting caught up on some exhilarating facebook drama. Ironically, in the middle of commenting on a friend’s status, I looked up at his profile picture and thought, “Dude…these profile pictures are starting to look like clothing ads!”

Now, I'd also advise to get him some sick headphones too. The only ones I’d recommend are the Beats by Dr. Dre brand. At $299, they are pricey but so worth it and the sound quality is amazing, plus they are noise reducing so they are perfect for travel.
